Bowl for health ‘BOWL for Health’ is a FREE eight-week programme designed for complete newcomers to bowls, providing an overview of the basics and how to play a match. THE use of some buildings remains unchanged for hundreds of years while others are adapted SZIV XMQI FIJSVI ½REPP] FIMRK demolished. These days we generally appreciate and preserve our important historic buildings but this has not always been the case. Most structures can only survive if well maintained and cherished otherwise they rapidly fall into decay. Notable exceptions include many of our great historic castles surviving as picturesque ruins for hundreds of years. Looking into the history of one building can give an insight into its changing fortunes and reasons for its eventual demise. Beechwood on Mill Bank was an unexceptional early Victorian detached villa. Built about 1840, it is said to have stood on the site of a windmill. Street directories show that by 1895 it was occupied by china
and glass merchant Ephraim Walker and his wife Martha. Walker died about 1910 but his widow stayed on for another 10 years after which the building appears to have been empty for some time. The First World War resulted in many changes in society, perhaps most importantly the roles of women. Huge numbers worked in domestic service in Victorian times. For example, families at
Lowlands in Haymans Green had eight live-in female staff including a governess, housekeeper, nannies and waitresses. Things began to change by Edwardian times with the suffrage movement campaigning for women to have the vote. By this time most men could vote but until a few decades earlier generally only male householders were eligible. The outbreak of war in 1914 WE[ [SQIR ¾SSHMRK MRXS NSFW

Celebrations for Chinese New Year are going to be ‘Pig’! THE city’s Year of the Pig festivities will start on February 8 with a focus on the Chinese arch, which was gifted to the city by Shanghai 20 years ago as a symbol of the twinning relationship. From 7pm on February 8 and 9 there will be lion dancing and 'LMRIWI MR¾YIRGIH WXVIIX XLIEXVI in and around the arch, which will build up to a unique projection and pyrotechnic show at the arch, and on surrounding buildings. Called The Quest for the Arch, the projections follow the journey of a little girl and a pig from Shanghai to Liverpool. The soundtrack will be provided by musician and composer Jah Wobble and will feature a live element to the performance. It will end at around 7.45pm. The Chinese arch street entertainment, the lumiere and pyrotechnic show will also take place on Sunday 10 February from 6pm. Building up to Sunday’s main day of celebrations, from January 28 thousands of Chinese lanterns will adorn city centre streets and Chinatown, and a number of buildings including St Luke’s

Weather no issue for Skoda Karoq By Tim Saunders I DON’T usually pay much attention to the weather but during my test of the Skoda Karoq I cannot help but notice it. I decide to take it on a trek to Hertfordshire and before long spitting rain turns into a torrential and persistent downpour that sees many motorists stranded. But not us and I am grateful because the Karoq, being an SUV, stands taller than those smaller run of the mill cars, like the usual Fiesta I drive. And I thank my lucky stars that I’m in the Karoq as I have to make my way through what seems to be a lake covering a country lane as we head towards Shaw’s Corner, playwright George Bernard Shaw’s retreat. Although the water level’s high it doesn’t pose a problem for the Skoda. Thank goodness. And as this downpour continues for a good hour my new friend has many

Graduation day MARTIN was a confident student, excelling not only in his studies but also several forms of competitive sports. He met Anita when they both joined Ticktock College studying for degrees in time management. The couple immediately discovered they had much in common – in particular highly-developed senses of humour. Martin had only to pull a face and Anita, the daughter of a prosperous undertaker, was in fits of laughter. Both could walk into a room full of strangers and humorously make others feel at ease. Like Anita, Martin’s background was hardly conductive to hilarity: his parents were both coroners. In their second year Anita discovered Martin’s secret. They were sat by willow trees alongside the lake, idly looking at a heron wading in the shallows. “It’s Samantha and Ben’s party next month – it’s themed on passing time,” said Anita. “They want us all to come in fancy dress – what do you say?” “Fine,” said Martin. “As long as you don’t ask me to make the costumes.” Anita was soon busy and produced two outfits representing a grandmother clock and a grandfather clock. Hers was a long shimmering gown in silver while his was like a golden toga.
Anita produced the garments with a flourish – they fitted perfectly. Then she produced the hats – box-like creations with realistic clock faces complete with eye holes. Anita was shocked by Martin’s reaction when he saw the hat. He flung it aside as she tried to put it on him, turning into a shivering, snarling beast. “What is it darling?” asked Anita reassuringly stroking his shoulder. “I knew you would have to find out sooner or later – I’m hat-phobic,” said Martin in a hushed voice. “It started on my first day at St Bertha’s prep school. I had to wear a ridiculous cap

The other boys called me Titchy Bonce because of the huge cap.” The school’s head allowed Martin to go capless. “Things have since been fine,” confided Martin, “but I have been living in dread of a coming event …” “Please tell me – I’m here to help,” said Anita, comfortingly. “The thing I am dreading most is graduation day,” murmured Martin. “I will have to go on stage in front of all those people in a gown and …” - he almost choked saying the word - “hat.” Anita’s eyes misted over sympathetically. Gradually she helped him overcome his phobia, making series of therapeutic hats with care. The first was the size of a thimble attached to a silk thread. Gradually each got bigger until Martin could wear his graduation outfit without turning into a quivering wreck. The graduation ceremony passed without a hitch but sadly Martin suffered a side effect.
