Long and winding roads By Stephen Guy
ROADS and lanes have been part of people’s lives for hundreds of years but the landscapes they pass through gradually change. Modern highways started appearing about 300 years ago when smooth road surfaces were perfected. The innovation enabled coaches to link towns and cities, following timetables and stopping at wayside inns for refreshments and fresh horses. It may have been slow by modern standards but journeys were faster than previously when it was often quicker to travel by sea than negotiate tracks passing for roads. Old maps provide a fascinating insight into our changing environment. They reveal a world that is familiar yet often starkly different. The view of West Derby’s Mill Lane – Eaton Road junction in 1907 (pictured) is very different from today.
Barclay’s Bank now stands on the left where a sandstone wall originally surrounded a nursery with acres of glasshouses growing flowers, fruit and vegetables. A postman and some children look towards the camera while a horse-drawn cart loaded with fresh produce stands at the kerb. There were several daily postal collections and deliveries. In the distance a carriage approaches from Knotty Ash under a canopy of huge trees.

The buildings on the right survive today much altered. Almonds Green led from West Derby Village to Norris Green Farm standing opposite an entrance lodge for Norris Green house. Both the farm and lodge were demolished when Muirhead Avenue was built. Norris Green house was cleared and its grounds opened as a public park. Larkhill Lane meandered through the meadows – one
stretch was later incorporated into Queens Drive. Parts of Lisburn Farm remain opposite Larkhill Park. In Edwardian times Clubmoor was a hamlet clustered around the Farmers’ Arms and a smithy. East Prescot Road opened up the countryside for much-needed housing development in the 1930s. Thomas Lane, leading south from Knotty Ash to Broad Green, was a rural byway where Liverpool’s oldest lamppost stands on the corner of Thingwall Lane. Dating from 1776, it guided visitors to the home of Liverpool mayor James Clemens in the pitch dark of a country night. Little more than a century ago Derby Lane was semi-rural with housing and a large borax mineral works on the Liverpool side but open country on the other. n Join the West Derby Society at its next meeting 7.30 pm on Wednesday 19 December at Lowlands, 13 Haymans Green, Liverpool L12 7JG.

Win a copy of this beautiful book...
LITTLE did teacher Bob Thurlow and architect and photographer David Wrightson realise when, in 1974, they finished their book on Liverpool city-centre pubs of the 60’s and 70’s that it would take 44 years for it to be published. The manuscript and photographs had been almost forgotten in a drawer in Bob’s house during all that time. But this year, with the help of the Bluecoat Press, the finished product saw the light of day. Over 170 public houses are described - and, yes, Bob had to visit them all! - and over 50 are illustrated; sadly many of these are now either closed or demolished. In the 60’s and 70’s Liverpool was starting to undergo a period of change and redevelopment and this book gives an insight into not only some of the things which were lost, but also into
some of the glories which have been retained. The Vines, the Philharmonic and the Crown are all still there to be visited and enjoyed in all their decorative splendour, but there are also many pubs of lesser fame which are worthy of investigation – this book can give you some tips. And there are some intriguing stories and bits of gossip to be told about some of these pubs too! READERS FREE PRIZE DRAW There’s a copy up for grabs. To be in with a chance of winning this beautiful book please send your name, address and Tel. No. to:- INN LIVERPOOL BOOK, Liverpool LINK, P.O. Box 170, Liverpool, L25 7WX or email your name, address and Tel. No. to complink@ yahoo.com and insert INN LIVERPOOL in he subject box please. To reach us by 4th December 2018.

Fight the flu FLU is an unpredictable virus that can cause mild illness in most people. It can cause severe illness and even death among vulnerable groups including older people, pregnant women and people with an underlying health condition. Certain people are more likely to develop potentially serious complications of flu, such as bronchitis and pneumonia. These people are advised to have a flu vaccine each year. For otherwise healthy people flu can be very unpleasant, however most people will recover from flu within a week or two and shouldn’t need to see their GP. Flu symptoms come on very quickly and can include: n A sudden fever – a temperature of 38C or above. n Aching body. n Feeling tired or exhausted. n Dry, chesty cough. n Sore throat. n Headache. n Difficulty sleeping. n Loss of appetite. n Diarrhoea or tummy pain. n Nausea and being sick. The symptoms are similar for children, but they can also get pain in their ear and appear less active. To help you get better more quickly: n Rest and sleep. n Keep warm. n Take paracetamol or ibuprofen to lower your temperature and treat aches and pains. n Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration. A pharmacist can give treatment advice and recommend flu remedies. Be careful not to use flu remedies if you’re taking
Scout and Guide Christmas float THE Scouts and Guides have, over the years, collected over £110,000 for charities including the Marie Curie Centre and Alder Hey Children’s Kidney Fund. This year they will be collecting in the Mossley Hill, Grassendale, Allerton and Aigburth areas on December 20, 21, 22 and 23 and look forward to your support once again.
paracetamol and ibuprofen tablets as it’s easy to take more than the recommended dose. Speak to a pharmacist before giving medicines to children. How to avoid spreading the flu Flu is very infectious and easily spread to other people. You’re more likely to give it to others in the first five days. Flu is spread by germs from coughs and sneezes, which can live on hands and surfaces for 24 hours. How to prevent flu The flu vaccine reduces the risk of catching flu, as well as spreading it to others. It’s more effective to get the vaccine before the start of the flu season (December to March). People who should have a flu vaccine The injected flu vaccine is offered free of charge on the NHS to people who are at risk. This is to help protect them against catching flu and developing serious complications. You should have the flu vaccine if you: n Are 65 years of age or over. n Are pregnant. n Have certain medical conditions. n Are living in a long-stay residential care home or other long-stay care facility. n Receive a carer’s allowance, or you are the main carer for an elderly or disabled person whose welfare may be at risk if you fall ill. Frontline health and social care workers are also eligible to receive the flu vaccine. It is your employer’s responsibility to arrange and pay for this vaccine. CREDIT: NHS

Granny Christmas HAZELNUT Hall was ancient with a heart and soul, its uneven stone walls and huge timbers resembling the innards of a sleeping giant. The house creaked at night like the bones of an old man trying to sleep. The place conjured up images of bygone times, lost loves and distant dreams. Like many old homes in the middle of winter, some areas were impossible to heat properly. The Mathers installed central heating when they bought the 16th century mansion but this had little impact on the cold that seemed to penetrate everywhere. It was their first Christmas at the hall and they made every effort to make things comfortable. The children, Ben and Poppy, were excited at the prospect of hanging stockings on the huge chimneypiece nestling in a snug inglenook. When James Mather bought the property he agreed that Jack

It was just after the war when I was little. “We don’t exactly know what happened but ever since Father Christmas has sent his granny instead while he waits on the roof.” Mr and Mrs Mather smiled indulgently when the children told the story.. Stockings were hung and sherry, mince pie and a carrot left out for the visitors. Poppy crept down in the early hours. Hidden behind a bookcase, Poppy shivered when an old lady emerged from the chimney. She wore a mop cap and shawl decorated with holly and ivy. Granny Christmas took one sip of sherry, grimaced and spluttered “I’d prefer something stronger” before leaving the presents, filling the stockings and climbing back up the chimney. n Read my next Strange Tale – The Snow People – in the January Link.

Cognitive behaviour psychologist, Dr Doreen Davy releases an eye-opening semi-autobiographical novel. Liverpudlian author and psychologist Doreen Davy’s latest book is titled Between the Immensities. This bizarre story was inspired by true events when the author returned to her hometown of Liverpool to care for her elderly mother. Being a trained psychologist specialising in cognitive behaviour therapy, Doreen prided herself on being rational and objective, always able to find the scientific explanation for anything deemed ‘supernatural’. However, shortly after her mother’s death while still in Liverpool, strange incidents occurred that could not be rationally explained in any way. This resulted in Doreen’s scepticism being strongly challenged, leading to a significant shift in her views of life and death. The title Between the Immensities is derived from an old Celtic expression. Many years ago when people asked each other “how are you doing?”, some would reply that they were “still struggling between the immensities”. The immensities are birth and death and the bit in between is every day of our life. Doreen explains that “for many, especially for people like my mum who lived through the hungry years of the Great Depression only to be followed by the terrors of World War 2 and the Liverpool Blitzes, life was a daily struggle just to survive”. Doreen’s mother was the last remaining survivor of the Bootle Co-op air-raid shelter which received a direct hit during May 1941, killing many of the people sheltering inside. As well as being thought provoking and emotionally uplifting, the book provides plenty of humour and inspiration for the reader. Between the Immensities can be purchased online from The Book Guild or Amazon, and is available from all good bookshops. It’s a story not easily forgotten.
Having spent thirty-six years living in New Zealand, psychologist Dr Katherine Moore finally succumbs to pressure from her sisters to return to Liverpool to care for their elderly mother. Moving into her mother’s council flat in Bootle, Katherine is surprised at how negative her ‘lovely gentle mammy’ has become. Her initial unsuccessful attempts to deal with her mother’s curmudgeonly attitude provide great entertainment for the family. Yearning to connect with her mother in a more meaningful way, Katherine turns to the tools of her trade as a psychologist and gradually the delicate balance of family life is turned upsidedown for everyone in the most unexpected ways. Sprinkled throughout with Liverpudlian humour, between the Immensities is an entertaining and heart-warming story of how a shallow mother/ daughter relationship blossoms into a loving and extraordinary alliance. Dr. Doreen Davy was born and raised in Bootle, Liverpool and now lives in New Zealand where she works as a psychologist specialising in cognitive behaviour therapy “A thoroughly enjoyable read... it is warm, tender, poignant, funny and informative. I really like the Liverpudlian humour.” -Joan Rosier-Jones, author and creative writing tutor

Celebrity article – Bruce Dickinson By Tim Saunders
PAUL Bruce Dickinson who is lead singer of heavy metal band Iron Maiden, has sold over 90m albums and performed over 2,000 shows. An entrepreneur, commercial pilot, media personality, fencing champion and a cancer survivor. “Moving was to become a feature of my life forever but as a family our stock in trade was moving house, mainly to make money he recalls in his autobiography What Does This Button Do? Bruce shared the basement of the Lindrick Hotel in Sheffield with his sister Helena and his father sold used cars at the front. “There was a window the size of an iPad, which opened into a gutter full of dead leaves. There was a refrigerator with an enjoyable electrical fault. I would hang on it with a damp cloth and see how much electricity I could take before my teeth started rattling. We sold up the hotel as he acquired the dealership for Lancia motor cars.
The family then moved back into an unassuming terraced house only a hundred yards up from the hotel they had sold 12 months earlier. Bruce became a pupil at Birkdale Preparatory School in Clarke Drive where comedian Michael Palin had attended a decade earlier. Taking his Common Entrance at 13, Bruce was offered a place at Oundle in Peterborough. “Having left Sheffield, I began a process of disengagement from family and involuntary alienation from the human race, at least for a couple of years. It is hard to say, even in hindsight, whether there was a net gain or loss as a human being. During summer holidays I’d moped around town, hanging around record shops and pressing my nose up against the glass of guitar and amplifier shops, lusting after speaker cabinets and hardware. Back home in Sheffield I still had some friends from prep school. Seeing as we’d all been packed off to boarding school, holidays were the only time we ever met up. Paul Bray was one of them. Paul had a drum kit in his
garage. He was in a band. Expelled from Oundle sixth form, months away from taking English, History and Economics A-levels, he was offered a place at King Edward VII, the comprehensive in Sheffield. “It was friendly. I waited for the hierarchy to become clear, for the punishment beatings, but nothing of that sort went on. I wondered about what might have been, had I not been packed off to boarding school. In his spare time he joined the Territorial Army as a private. “Our unit – D Company, Yorkshire Volunteers – was, in theory, on

Striking Volvo XC90 with ample room By Tim Saunders “IT’S the best seven-seater I know” says my dentist, during my routine examination, as we discuss the merits of the Volvo XC90. He owns both an XC90 and a VW Touareg. “And there’s still room for the shopping when all the seats are up”. So I’m expecting great things when I test the XC90. Externally this latest model is more rounded than its predecessor making it more visually striking and
attractive. Head on its headlights and large bold chrome grille are what you’d expect of a premium sports utility vehicle that’s got to compete against rivals from BMW, Porsche and Jaguar Land Rover. The rear is a little less appealing to me. The power boot is a bit boxy and could do with more curves. And while the chrome exhaust pipes help to set off the rear their placement is not safe for little children as Henry (2) proves when his hand brushes against

one of them after a long journey. They are very hot. Fortunately, I rush him to the sink and after lots of cold water there is thankfully no burn. A trip to London to see my wife’s uncle allows us to travel with her parents, which is a rare luxury. Lin and John sit next to Henry in his child seat while Harriett (7) and Heidi (5) sit in the third row of seats in the boot. Usually the third row is awkward to the say the least, when it comes to lifting the seats up and putting them in place. But in the Volvo it is simply a matter of pulling them up and they slot into position. On opening the power boot the rear of the Volvo drops, which is quite a surprise; this self-levelling suspension is like Citroens of old. I’m not quite sure how beneficial it is but perhaps it is aimed at the older driver and passenger, perhaps making getting into the vehicle easier. The seats are comfy too, although Harriett does complain about feeling car sick. It is strange how some new vehicles smell so strongly while others do not. We open the windows and that pacifies her. “I find this very
comfortable,” says Lin. The Volvo cruises on the motorway with no road noise in the luxury cabin. The light brown leather seats are comfortable but I do find that they make me sweat on a hot day. They are supportive and electrically adjustable. The sat nav could be easier to operate. I cannot find a postcode search, only one for a city centre or for specific things like accommodation so this is of no help for us in London. Despite motorway cruising the Volvo returns over 30mpg. Another jaunt sees us travel to Wiltshire where we are able to use the sat nav to find a supermarket and to find the town centre. It works well. The large panoramic glass tilt/ slide roof lets lots of light in and this has to be opened on a sunny day. n Facts at a glance XC90 D5 PowerPulse AWD Momentum Pro (MY18.5) Automatic Price: £64,974.58 Top speed: 137mph 0-60mph: 7.8secs Economy: 30mpg Watch the videos at www. testdrives.biz
Light up a Life Appeal 2018 AT WOODLANDS Hospice we know that Christmas can be a very difficult time if you have lost a loved one, or if you cannot be with someone you love. Our Light up a Life appeal gives you the opportunity to celebrate the life of a loved one by dedicating a light on one of our Christmas trees in December. By dedicating a light to your loved ones, you will not only be celebrating their life, you will be helping us to support our patients and their families at a time they
need it most. You can dedicate a light to anyone you choose. They do not need to have been a patient at the Hospice – they could be someone who cannot be with you at this time of year who you will miss very much. To dedicate a light online visit www.woodlandshospice.org/ lightupalife or alternatively to dedicate over the phone please call Carole Riley on 0151 529 4143 who will be happy to help you.

She loves it when there are puppies at the centre, and she likes to sit and watch them play, fascinated! Roxy is wonderful with people
that she knows, but she would be happiest in a home without children, and with few visitors. Croft pay the penalty in league cup thriller George Mahon Cup Alder 2, Stoneycroft 2 (Alder go through 5-4 on penalties)
By Mick Titherington
Alder FC continue unbeaten start By Peter Harrison
THE team’s great start to the season has continued as the games have come thick and fast, with a mixture of cup and league games taking place. First up was the LCFA Challenge cup game against West Cheshire League opposition South Liverpool, and a 2-2 draw ensured the game was decided on penalties, with South Liverpool 4-2 victorious. Closely followed was a midweek league fixture and a 4-0 victory against Old Xavs with a Timmy Naylor hat-trick and a Connor Hill strike. Two separate 3-1 victories against Alumini and AFC Liverpool Reserves saw regular marksmen Kyle Mulby and Anthony Riddell amongst the goals. The final league fixture saw
a top-of-the-table clash against Waterloo Dock end with honours even and a 2-2 draw. After a disastrous start, the team were 2-0 down after six minutes. However, they showed great character to come back into the game with Danny McNally coolly converting a penalty and, in the last five minutes, Taylor Hill adding the finishing touch from an Alex Gofton flick on. Sandwiched in between was a Zingari Cup game against Stoneycroft, and a great game ended in a 2-2 draw with penalties again. This time the team went through 5-4 in a match that neither team deserved to lose. n Pictured are the team after their game against Alumini. The lads would like to thank, and give special mention to, their sponsor Capital Kitchens and Bathrooms.
Five wins in a row for West Derby’s men’s second team By Mark Williams
THE three teams at West Derby Hockey Club are now seven games into their respective seasons, with the exception of the Men’s 2s who still have a game in hand. Both the Ladies 1s and the Mens 1s sit on six points having endured difficult starts to their campaigns against some quality opposition. Things are certainly on the up however after the return of several members to the club over the last couple of weeks – particularly for the ladies who registered a phenomenal 8-1 win over Formby Ladies 4s at the start of November. The stars of the season so far
have been the Men’s 2s who, after losing their first game, have gone on to record five consecutive wins, scoring 22 goals in the process while conceding only three. New signing Doug LeBrocq has scored eight goals. The winning streak saw an 11-0 home win vs City of Manchester 3s, which ranks as the eighth highest recorded win in the history of the club (albeit the electronic history). For most of the players, however, the highlight was definitely the two consecutive away wins vs Didsbury Northern Men’s 5s and 6s. Didsbury were a thorn in the side of the 2s last season, beating them home and away in comprehensive fashion.
STONEYCROFT travelled the short distance along Queens Drive for this first round George Mahon Cup tie against Premier league opponents Alder. Alder, lying second in the top division, were favourites against the second division leaders Stoneycroft, but any thoughts that this was going to be a walkover for the home side soon dissipated once the game commenced. Both sides were in good form and there were some glittering individual performances. Played at a fast pace and in a competitive but fair spirit, spectators were treated to a highly polished, spectacular display which was a credit to the Liverpool County FA Premier league. Undaunted by the separation in league places, the visitors took the game to their hosts and were rewarded when Jay Penny rounded off a carefully crafted move to put his side in front. It
was end to end stuff and Alder drew level through Kyle Mulby but Croft then went ahead again when the inspirational Tom Stewart slotted home. The tie looked as if it was heading for an upset until Alder’s Alex Golton equalised in the dying minutes to take it to penalties. The penalty shoot -out proved just as exciting as the game itself with the teams level at 4-4 before Alder converted their fifth and Croft failed with their final kick. Liverpool Hibernia 0, Stoneycroft 5 It was business as usual as Croft returned to league duty after their Cup skirmish. James Kennedy hit the goal trail again helping himself to a hat-trick and with Josh Quarless and Matty Lindy adding a goal apiece to the total without reply normal service was resumed as they brushed past a hapless Hibernia. n In the I Zingari Combination Stoneycroft Vets thrashed De La Salle 6-1 with goals from Lam, Burquest, Haymer, Butterworth and Hart to maintain their unbeaten league record.
