A Tribute to Peter Hesketh It is with great sorrow that we bring you the news that Moira’s husband and The LINK’s resident Quizmaster, Peter Hesketh, sadly passed away suddenly in February. Since Moira started The LINK over 15 years ago, as well as his busy job as an insurance broker, Pete was the magazine’s biggest fan and a huge pillar of support for Moira. Not only would you find Pete out and about delivering new issues to local shops and businesses, but he also took great joy in hand-delivering it to their neighbours. But a lot of you will know that his work didn’t stop there. Pete often helped Moira with the content and stories, both editing and writing many articles. However, it is his wonderful work and commitment to his role as Quizmaster that most of you will remember him for. Pete was a huge music fan and a fountain of knowledge, and during the lockdown, as well as writing quizzes for The LINK, he was also hosting family quiz nights on Zoom. Born and raised in Woolton, Pete would spend all his life living and working in South Liverpool. Growing up, he attended Woolton Primary School and The Bluecoat Boys School, where he made many great friends who remain friends to this day. As well as music, Pete’s other passion was sport and he had a lifelong passion for cricket, football and LFC. As children,

as an alternative to Anfield, Pete’s father started taking his children to watch South Liverpool FC. After attending their first game in the late 1960’s they became frequent spectators and lifelong friends were made along the way. Pete was associated with the club for well over 50 years and would become instrumental in keeping the club alive against the odds. After being promoted to the main Board of Director’s in 1977, in 1979, Pete became the youngest semi-professional Club Chairman at the age of 24. His drive in keeping the club alive ensured that their name lives on today. Moira would like to express her sincere thanks to all their relatives and friends for the kindness and sympathy received - over 200 cards and so many beautiful flowers. It is overwhelming! A huge thank you to those who also made donations in memory of Pete to The Ocular Oncology Unit at St Paul’s, Royal Liverpool Hospital and other Cancer charities of their choice. A special thanks goes out to Moira’s wonderful neighbours who have provided her with support and sympathy at this difficult time.

A ‘thank you’ from Beechley Stables A huge thank you to everyone who has supported us and the horses during the past 12 months. Your donations have helped us greatly in getting through this pandemic. Now, as spring approaches and restrictions ease, we look forward to opening our gates and catching up with all our friends, riders and supporters. We are also in the process of contacting riders and volunteers who have been shielding about returning to Beechley. The horses have been increasing their daily exercise plan to increase their fitness in preparation for our riders getting back in the saddles. This includes some dietary restrictions - just like us as we emerge from our winter woollies. As the weather improves, the ponies will be back out in the Orchard where you can see them grazing or at play when visiting Calderstones Park. You are very welcome to watch but PLEASE just do not feed them! Like every business, we have a plan and must take things slowly, remaining Covid aware. This will enable us to build up our riders’ confidence and skills as it’s a year since most have seen a horse or been in the saddle. As we progress, we hope to arrange several fund-raising events, so everyone can get to meet the horses and the people who make up Team Beechley. Finally, to everyone who bought vouchers for ‘Put a pony to bed’ or adopted a horse, your vouchers are valid until

December but we will let you know via our Facebook and Twitter pages when we start taking bookings for this. Thanks once again from Team Beechley :-)

Liverpool makes landmark pledge to protect its parks Liverpool City Council has announced that all of the city’s parks are to be protected forever. The city’s Acting Mayor, Councillor Wendy Simon, made the plans official at Cabinet on 19 March which will see the protection of 100 much-loved parks and green spaces, totalling 1,039 hectares. In a unique partnership with the charity Fields in Trust, Liverpool City Council is set to become the first local authority to adopt this vision, ensuring that the outdoor areas will not be built on or sold off, safeguarding them and ensuring a tangible legacy for local communities. The landmark decision outlines the ambition that every resident will live no more than a ten-minute walk from a high-quality green space – this could be a beautiful park, a smaller neighbourhood green space, football pitches or play area. Any location that enables people to exercise, play or simply relax and unwind. The announcement forms part of The Great Outdoors pledge - one of ten promises made by the city council to build a better, brighter future for all.

Through partnership work, it will secure the future of dozens of much-loved parks and green spaces across the city in a phased approach which aims to be completed by the end of 2023. Councillor Wendy Simon said: “Liverpool is blessed to have so many stunning green spaces, and this new initiative means we can ensure everyone has access to free, local outdoor spaces for sport, play and recreation, forever. “The health, wellbeing and community benefits these locations deliver are priceless, demonstrated so clearly during this pandemic where they have become such a central and important part of our lives. “And the benefits aren’t just health-related. Access to green spaces improves our neighbourhoods, tackles climate change, supports education and economic growth and they frequently become the stage on which we host many of our hugely popular cultural celebrations.”

Rob smashes fundraising target on 24-hour challenge Rob Eagles from Mossley Hill, along with his friend Stephen Miller, ran an incredible 101 miles during a 24-hour running challenge on Good Friday (2nd of April). All while raising an incredible amount for charity. The challenge involved running/walking the 2.2-mile perimeter of Sefton Park on a continuous basis for 24 hours from 9am on Friday until 9am Saturday morning.

Rob took part in the challenge in order to raise funds for a fantastic charity called Molly Olly’s Wishes, which is a small charity that supports children with life-threatening or life-limiting illnesses and their families to help with their emotional wellbeing. The charity grants individual wishes such as birthday parties, trips out and other family events so that important

milestones can be celebrated or special memories made. They donate therapeutic toys and books to both children directly and to hospitals throughout the UK. The Straight & Narrow It was not that Maude was inflexible but rather that she just liked to keep to her plans and not be distracted. Claude was very different: he could change his mind at the drop of a hat or the snap of a finger. They were a peculiar couple in many ways - chalk and cheese as Aunt Madge used to say over the flowery teapot and matching cups. “I’ve never seen such an odd pair,” she told her best friend Polly at their regular meeting in Brook Cottage. “When my sister was on her death bed I promised to keep an eye on Claude but he has been a trial. “I blame the newspapers and the talkies. They are such a distraction - putting ideas in people’s heads.” She decided to give Maude another talking to. “You must take him in hand if you are going to have a future together,” she said sternly as she turned the mangle. Maude carefully took the clean washing and put it on the line in the cottage garden. “So you’ve told me on numerous occasions, Mrs Plumtree,” she said pegging a sheet firmly in the breeze. Maude and Claude were sat by the orchard pond. They had been going to the quarry but then Claude changed his mind “Let’s feed the ducks,” he said. “You - we - must keep to the straight and narrow,” said Maude abruptly, her mind made up. She was determined to make a lasting impression on Claude’s brain. A cross country walk was carefully planned. Claude provided the one-inch Ordnance Survey map and Maude thought out the route.

It was going to take in certain features that would support her plan. The couple caught a little steam train to the station by the old castle and started their long walk homeward. Soon they came to a boggy area. “Keep to the straight and narrow,” said Maude as she guided Claude along the narrow path. Further on was a dense thicket. “Keep to the straight and narrow,” intoned Maude, guiding him along the tiny trail under overhanging greenery. They came to a swift-flowing stream. “Keep to the straight and narrow,” commanded Maude, guiding him over the stepping stones to the other side. A steep bank loomed unexpectedly into view when they turned a leafy corner. “I know - keep to the straight and narrow,” said Claude, a touch of sarcasm in his voice. Maude led the way up the precipitous path, swiftly reaching the summit. Catching up, Claude was euphoric and raced down the other side of the hill. “Not the straight and narrow!” shouted Maude, looking at the map. There was a loud splash as Claude landed in a large, smelly pond used by cattle as a watering hole. At least he had dried off by the time they reached home at a safe distance from Maude, on the straight and narrow. Read my next Strange Tale in The LINK: Mac the Giant Killer.

Several, including the chapel, were cleared away to create the wide central area we know today.

Communities, buildings and landscapes change constantly – some very little, such as much-loved ancient structures, while others are cleared away as needs change. This also applies to such things as transport systems and other aspects of local infrastructure from wells to electric cables.

Thankfully some buildings were preserved, including the Tudor courthouse and yeoman’s cottage. New premises were designed to create a fine visual impression, particularly for those coming and going to Croxteth Hall. Our photo shows a horse-drawn tram passing the old Sefton Arms one summer’s day in the late 1890s.

Old maps capture moments in time and can be read like a book, following an absorbing story expressed in symbols and names.

An arch gives access for carriages and a cyclist passes a horse-drawn cart parked at the kerb. Beyond are grounds next to West Derby Orphanage around the corner in Town Row. In the background, in front of St Mary’s Church, is the gleaming new fountain installed in 1894. It was the gift of Richard Meade-King (1850 – 1906) who lived in Sandfield Park. Set insight of three public houses, the Portland stone fountain bears the forthright inscription Water is Best. Designed by architect Arthur P Fry and surmounted by a lantern (restored some years ago), the water basin was decorated with a panel in gold, red and green mosaic.

Maps of West Derby Village, for example, show the pace of change accelerating as the community grew. Before about 1850 it was still largely rural. The ancient chapel stood in the middle of the Village, a feature for many generations. William Molyneux, 4th Earl of Sefton, was largely responsible for the rebuilding of the Village from the 1850s. Until then it had been rather higgledy-piggledy, a confusing hotchpotch of buildings that had developed over many centuries. west derby & croxteth park

The Molyneux family donated the land for St Mary’s Church, replacing the old chapel. Designed by leading architect Sir George Gilbert Scott, the church with its 160 ft high tower was consecrated in 1856. The gates to Croxteth Hall’s main drive are next to the church. An 1851 map marks it as “new road” – it may have been constructed for the visit by young Queen Victoria, husband Prince Albert and growing family in that year. A city named after a fruit We’ve watched Easter come and go yet holidays abroad in 2021 continue to hang in the balance for now. So this issue, let’s travel together from the comfort of your sofa, armchair, or [insert other glamorous location here] to the majestic city of Granada, located in the region of Andalucia in southwest Spain, and the history behind its name. The story behind the city’s name has two possible theories. Some say it derives from its Moorish name, Karnattah (Gharnatah), possibly meaning ‘hill of strangers’. The other theory is that Granada actually takes its name from a fruit. ‘Granada’ in Spanish actually translates to ‘pomegranate’ in English and it is, in fact, the city’s emblem and appears on the coat of arms.

But when it’s time to crack it open, the versatility of the fruit is unrivalled. In Spanish, and international, cuisine pomegranate seeds can be used to liven up salads, stews, juices and desserts. Let me reassure you though that there is so much more to Granada than its fruity name. The city oozes culture, from its Moorish roots, evident in the stunning architecture, to the fiery flamenco scene. It’s also famous for its atmospheric bars which serve up free tapas with your drinks. Granada is very much a Spanish city yet you can’t help but feel you are in an entirely unique and special corner of the world.

Native to Persia, this now fashionable fruit, with its high levels of antioxidants and vitamins B, C & E, is naturally suited to cool winters and hot summers but can thrive pretty much anywhere from Spain to China. Scientists have found eating pomegranate can fight against the hardening of the arteries and diseases such as heart attacks and strokes. In Eastern healing practices, the skin and leaves are used to cure a range of illnesses. Throughout Spain, you can find a variety of fruits trees on farmland, such as red and yellow plums, apricot, red and yellow peaches and figs. However, in winter, fresh fruits can be very scarce. So apart from the fruits and nuts that are dried during August and September, it’s necessary to prepare for the colder months and the pomegranate is the perfect solution.

Recipe Spinach and Pumpkin gratin We have another delicious French recipe for you from Sylviane’s country kitchen. It’s a wonderful veggie dish that can be served as a main or a delightful side. You can use pumpkin or any type of squash for this recipe (butternut, etc) and fresh or frozen spinach. And with squash now available in most frozen food sections, it’s a dish you can prepare year-round. Bon appétit!

Directions Cook the pumpkin/squash either by steaming the chunks, cooking in the oven or frying in a little butter/oil until soft. Mash roughly with a fork.

Ingredients ■■ 500g pumpkin or squash cut into approximately one-inch squares ■■ 500g spinach ■■ 1 egg ■■ 1 or 2 tablespoons of thick fresh cream ■■ A handful of breadcrumbs (use stale bread and blitz in a blender or crush in a freezer bag)

Cook the spinach by steaming or just letting fresh spinach melt in a pan with a little butter. TIP: If using frozen, just let it defrost and don’t bother cooking it as it will cook quickly in the oven. Add garlic and breadcrumbs. The breadcrumbs will absorb the excess moisture you typically get from spinach. Add the beaten egg and cream to the pumpkin mash with a little parmesan. Spread the spinach in an ovenproof dish and cover it with the pumpkin mixture. Sprinkle some parmesan over the top and cook in the oven (180°C or Gas 6) for about 25-30 minutes.

This can be eaten as a vegetarian dish or as an accompaniment to all sorts of meat or fish.

Lymphoma Action offer online support in Merseyside Lymphoma Action, the only charity in the UK dedicated to supporting people affected by lymphoma, is inviting anyone in Merseyside affected by Hodgkin or non-Hodgkin lymphoma or chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) to join their online support meeting. The group has been welcomed by those who have their own experiences of a blood cancer diagnosis. With previous meetings held in person, the

support group was relaunched in an online format shortly after the first lockdown. Anyone in the region who has been affected by lymphoma is welcome to join, including partners and relatives. Liverpool’s new film studios named

Liverpool’s new purpose-built film and TV stages have officially been named

and are to be called The Depot, taking inspiration from the location’s history as a former bus site for Merseyside Transport Limited.

It is predicted The Depot will create a £24m economic boost for the regional economy, creating 360 new jobs and 760 indirect jobs.

The pop-up studios will offer a temporary facility to capitalise on the current demand for studio space until the nearby Littlewoods studios scheme is complete.

It is expected that the sound stages, which have received funding from the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, will be operational by Summer 2021.

New cafe to offer support for new families After the closing of popular familyfriendly cafe Wigwam on Rose Lane last year, local residents Liz Wilson and Sean Gleeson couldn’t bear to see such a valuable resource for local parents disappear so decided to take the plunge and open their own venue, the Little Peacock Coffee Shop. Under Covid restrictions, they have been open for takeaway but after looking into the guidelines, they realised that it would be possible to

offer face-to-face support groups for some parents. Being mindful of the rules, these groups will be focused on parents of children born since the first lockdown. “Our group has been something of a lifeline for a lot of people. We’re meeting parents who haven’t been out with their children since they were born, and babies that have never seen other babies. It’s been incredibly heartwarming and very gratifying to be part of.”

Liverpool’s clean green bus plan In an aim to clean up emissions from the city’s buses, in March, the council’s cabinet approved to accept a £3.3m fund to convert the engines of 200 buses, as part of a wider programme to improve Liverpool’s air quality. The funding comes from the Department of Transport and the council will now set out a timeline to create a cleaner, greener fleet with Merseytravel, which has also begun decarbonising the region’s buses.

The decision comes just days after the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority announced it was to introduce its first wave of hydrogenpowered buses. Liverpool’s draft Clean Air Plan aims to bring down kerbside Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) levels in the city to below the national target of an annual mean concentration of 40 microgrammes per m3.

South return to action After three months without kicking a ball due to lockdown, South Liverpool FC finally returned to action at the end of March. Some of the club’s teams decided to start matches straightaway but most have had some friendlies and training before competitive football.

South’s first team, looking for promotion to the North West Counties League, started with a hard-won point at Vauxhall Motors Reserves. Taking the lead through a Kevin Cringle goal,

South were pegged back with a late equaliser but the league title is still in their hands after the league decided to continue the league campaign with a truncated programme in order to finish by the end of May. The reserves restarted their league games with a 4-2 home defeat to South Sefton Borough. A late penalty by Gerard Forde was insufficient despite an improved final half-hour. The youth team started their league cup group game with a 3-2 home defeat to Litherland Remyca. An improved second half saw the team earn parity after being two goals down with goals from a Gabriel McGinn penalty and Alfie Cunningham. However, a very late winner was achieved by Remyca after South went down to ten men. The club’s four veterans teams have been far more active. The

Saturday first team won their first two games without conceding a goal, 3-0 to Waterloo GSOB and 2-0 to Shakespeare United. The top of the table clash with St Aloysius was lost by 2-1 and this puts the Allys in pole position for the league title. The Saturday seconds have a 100% record from three games and have consolidated second place behind runaway leaders, Litherland Remyca. The Sunday veterans teams have only played one match each but both achieved 2-1 wins. South’s efforts to gain promotion to the National League System are now dependant on passing the ground inspection, the FA’s decision to allow promotion after this pandemic-affected season and whether the restructuring of the football pyramid will take place. For South, it is a case of keeping the collective fingers crossed!

Football’s back but it’s not a happy return for ‘Croft To the delight of millions, grassroots football returned on 29th March heralding a new dawn as we slowly start to come out of lockdown. For players, officials and spectators (although not quite yet), the opportunity to return to the game they love was received with delight. For the past year, the unprecedented circumstances have seen participation come to a complete stop impacting on physical and mental wellbeing. So it was that the announcement that the season was to resume was greeted with relief and euphoria.

The hopes and dreams usually associated with the beginning of a new season were all in place at the recommencement. For many, those hopes and dreams were quickly put in perspective after an inauspicious start for Stoneycroft. A competitive opening fixture against Garston should have, if chances had been taken, sealed all three points but in the end, Stoneycroft had to settle for one with the game ending all square at 1-1. This was followed by a disappointing 5-0 thrashing by Empress. With key players missing, ‘Croft were seemingly

lacking in every department and were lucky not to have conceded more. On a positive note, it is often said you learn more from a defeat than a win so let’s hope lessons have been learned and they can quickly get back to the standards they were achieving before the disruption. Whatever the results, however, the sheer pleasure of being back on the playing pitch cannot be denied. Welcome back to the agony and ecstasy of the beautiful game. Long may it continue.
