Bricks and mortar ... By Stephen Guy, West Derby Society
BUILDINGS and structures come and go over the years, some surviving for centuries while others rise and fall in just a few decades. They are often much more than bricks and mortar, stone and cement or glass and concrete – they are bound up in our collective history and memory. A surprising number of buildings pass into history without being photographed or recorded by other visual means. Some were known to large numbers of people who, in the days before smartphones, rarely carried a camera and then usually only on holiday. An example is the Plaza cinema
in West Derby Village visited by many thousands of people when it operated between 1927 and 1960. I took the only known surviving picture of the building before it was converted into a supermarket. It was among several local cinemas I recorded with my Kodak 127 camera in 1962, when the building was empty. Photographs of long-forgotten buildings turn up from time to time, enhancing our understanding of the modern environment. A house (pictured) once stood on what is now the car park of the Halton Castle pub, at the corner of Crosby Green and Mill Lane. This was one of numerous properties built in the 19th

century as this part of West Derby was developed. Originally 44 Mill Lane, it later became number 90 as more and more premises were built along the road. Street directories reveal that it was occupied by surgeon Thomas Judson in 1900. Papers from a deceased estate indicate that in 1963 the house was let to tenants at an annual rent of £149 16s 8d (£149.84) including rates. The West Derby Society has an ongoing project to collect images of lost buildings and structures. It also records properties before they vanish forever. Two recent examples include Holly Lodge house and the former St
James’s Vicarage. People also kindly donate images for our archive while others turn up on old postcards and from other sources. Family snaps sometimes have unexpected bonuses for the historian. The original intention may have been to capture a happy occasion, posed in front of a building for example. However, when the location alters or vanishes these pictures are frequently the only surviving visual record to add to our knowledge. n Join the West Derby Society at its next meeting 7.30 pm on Wednesday April 17 at Lowlands, 13 Haymans Green, Liverpool L12 7JG.

IBS Awareness Month IBS is a common condition that affects the digestive system. It causes symptoms like stomach cramps, bloating, diarrhoea and constipation. These tend to come and go over time, and can last for days, weeks or months at a time. It’s usually a lifelong problem. It can be very frustrating to live with and can have a big impact on your everyday life. There’s no cure, but diet changes and medicines can often help control the symptoms. The exact cause is unknown – it’s been linked to things like food passing through your gut too quickly or too slowly, oversensitive nerves in your gut, stress, and a family history of IBS. The main symptoms of IBS are: n Stomach pain or cramps – usually worse after eating and better after doing a poo. n Bloating – your tummy may feel uncomfortably full and swollen. n Diarrhoea – you may have watery poo and sometimes need to poo suddenly. n Constipation – you may strain when pooing and feel like you can’t empty your bowels fully. There may be days when your symptoms are better and days
when they’re worse (flare-ups). They may be triggered by food or drink. There’s no single diet or medicine that works for everyone with IBS. But there are lots of things that can help if you’ve been diagnosed with it. DO n Cook homemade meals using fresh ingredients when you can. n Keep a diary of what you eat and any symptoms you get – try to avoid things that trigger your IBS. n Try to find ways to relax. n Get plenty of exercise. n Try probiotics for a month to see if they help. DON’T n Delay or skip meals. n Eat too quickly. n Eat lots of fatty, spicy or processed foods. n Eat more than three portions of fresh fruit a day (a portion is 80g) n Drink more than three cups of tea or coffee a day. n Drink lots of alcohol or fizzy drinks. Can I help you? Strange Tale – by Anton Valdemart
THE horses thundered around the track, nostrils flared and muscles straining as they headed for the winning post urged on by jockeys and crowd alike. Mary tore up her bookmaker’s docket, sighed and looked ruefully across the course packed with excited racegoers. “I never seem to win,” she told Alice as they made their way back to the strand. “It’s only a bit of fun,” said Alice. “You have hardly lost a fortune, just sixpence.” This was the friends’ second day at the Aintree meeting. A cloud blocked out the sun - it started to drizzle. While Alice fumbled with her umbrella, Mary struggled with her cape. “Can I help you?” said the man as he smoothed the garment over Mary’s shoulders. The stranger then raised his top hat, bowed and vanished into the crowd. The friends headed for the ladies’ refreshments room where Mary daydreamed over her cup of coffee and slice of Battenburg. She could not get a vision out of her head – a nurse carrying a flickering lamp while patrolling a dimly-lit children’s dormitory. There was 10 minutes to go before the next race and Mary scanned the race card. She put a shilling on Lamplight Child which romped home at 50 to 1. Mary was brimming with confidence the following day and used all her ingenuity and insight to back Major’s Romp in the Molyneux Handicap. It came last. “Can I help you?” the soothing voice murmured in Mary’s ear as she climbed into her carriage. A gloved hand took her arm. She looked up from her seat
only to see the same top-hatted stranger again disappearing into the crowd. Her mind suddenly flooded with images of an inferno raging through a mansion. Mary told the coachman to stop and wait while she headed for the nearest bookie. Light My Fire won the Craven Hurdles by a head. Another win. “Can I help you?” said the nowfamiliar voice. A small brown bottle was waved under Mary’s nose as smelling salts quickly revived her. She had fainted with shock. Just as Mary collected her winnings, a policeman said she must return home immediately – one of the nannies dropped a lamp and the house burnt down. As she came around, her mysterious helper once again melted into the crowd. Fortunately, no-one was hurt in the blaze. Mary helped her parents find temporary accommodation for themselves and her younger brothers and sisters. Three years passed and a new mansion rose on the site of the charred ruin. It was time to take a break. Mary was reluctant to go to Epsom after what had happened but Alice persuaded her: “After all, you did have two good wins that day.” The vision of a top-hatted man came into Mary’s mind. Something told her to choose a horse with the strange-sounding name Can I Help You? JAKE is a 12-year-old Jack Russell Terrier. There aren’t enough boxes to tick for this little fella, he’s got the lot! You certainly know when Jake’s around, and he loves to be outside, investigating. He’s a very active terrier, despite his age, and loves to explore. Jake will do his best to get your attention and won’t stop until he’s on your knee! He does get a little vocal when he’s around other dogs, and doesn’t always enjoy it when they get too close.
He’s toy mad, his favourite ones being anything soft or squeaky, and can live with children aged 10 and above. He’s also perfectly house trained, but would prefer a home where someone is around most of the time, as he adores company. Stoneycroft 2, Redgate Rovers 2 (lost 6-7 on pens) STONEYCROFT’S Maiden Lane pitch was deemed unfit to play their Liverpool County FA Junior Cup quarter cup final tie so the game was switched to Redgate’s ground and played on a 3G surface. The switch did not do Croft any favours and they never seemed at their best throughout. Despite this they went ahead twice but both times were pegged back and, having failed to seize opportunities to seal the tie, were dragged into a penalty shoot-out. There is no doubt that this way of settling games provides drama but it’s never satisfactory, particularly for the losing side. In the end Croft only had themselves to blame as they blew three chances to take the tie after Redgate misses but in the end lost out. Old Xavs 1, Stoneycroft 4 Fortunately for the Croft they soon had the opportunity to shed their Junior Cup woes with a visit to Xavs in the John Gregson Cup. This time they made no mistake and a Luke Daley hat-trick plus an Alan Kelly slot with the single
reply from Will Goodison saw them cruise through to the next round. It wasn’t a great performance from the league leaders but it was comfortable enough. ACOL 3, Stoneycroft 7 Returning to league duty this game saw goals galore. This time Jay Kennedy completed his hat-trick supported by goals from Josh Quarless, Tom Stewart and Joe Daley to ram seven past the somewhat unfortunate ACOL who replied with a brace from Ryan Smith and another from Jay Buckley.

ALDER FC will be glad to see the back of February after some mixed results. The month began with a hard fought 1-1 draw in the derby game against Liverpool Nalgo. Watched by a healthy crowd, Alder took the lead through Ben Irwin, but unfortunately an own goal in the second half surrendered the lead. A weakened side suffered a 6-2 league defeat against East Villa. After a disastrous first 20 minutes, they were trailing 5-0, and after some tactical changes managed to net through Taylor Hill and Mick Andrews.
However a sixth goal from the Villa cemented a deserved win. A below par performance then followed with a 4-1 defeat to BRNESC in the quarter final of the cup – Ali Gofton on the score sheet. The final fixture of the month saw a top of the table clash with league leaders Waterloo Dock. For the second time this season honours were even following a 1-1 draw, with Mick Andrews netting his 10th goal of the season. This now leaves the team in third place in the league with the final quarter of the season remaining.
