Highest civic honours for fire service, hospitals and Bishop THE Auxiliary Bishop of Liverpool, the Right Reverend Tom Williams, is to receive Freedom of the City of Liverpool, the highest civic honour.

Born off Scotland Road, Bishop Tom Williams was ordained priest in the city’s Metropolitan Cathedral in 1972 and has continued to serve in the city for almost half a century.

Bishop Tom Williams said,:“I am very surprised and humbled at this great honour. Five generations of my family have been part of this city and it has been a privilege to serve here for 48 years.

“I will always be grateful for the support which I have received.”

The Mersey Fire and Rescue Service as well as Aintree, Broadgreen and Royal Liverpool Hospitals and the Liverpool University Dental Hospital were also nominated for admission to the Freedom Roll of Associations and Institutions.

Strange Tale

He had tried all the homely remedies but none of them worked. The pain persisted, a dull pulsating constantly disturbing his rest and peace of mind.

Village counsellor Mona Moon recommended he visit Old Mother Peers who was celebrated for her traditional herbal remedies.

Seamus trudged up to the thatched cottage, his weary steps plodding the footpath strewn with mud and cowpats.

Old Mother Peers had just finished her milking and was settling in front of a roaring fire with her clay pipe and mug of tea.

She kept an open house and Seamus sat down opposite her on an ancient settle.

The herbalist poured him a mug of the tea and a rambling consultation followed – Seamus doing most of the talking while Old Mother Peers stared into the fire.

“I am going to transfer the pain into your big toe,” she said suddenly.

She reached into the old cupboard, quickly locating a packet of powder: “Take a teaspoon of this with milk morning, noon and night.”

Seamus did as he was instructed. Two days later he woke up without toothache for the first time in weeks.

He was euphoric and laughed out aloud, flinging off the bedclothes and leaping out of bed.

When his feet touched the cold linoleum, it felt like an electric shock flashed and sizzled from his left big toe. It was agony.

He wrapped his foot is a damp bandage, ate a hasty breakfast and painfully set off for Old Mother Peers’ cottage.

“I did tell you I was transferring the pain to your big toe,” she said firmly.

Seamus stood shaking on the cold stone flags: “I have never experienced pain worse than this,” he moaned.

“Oh yes you have!” screeched Old Mother Peers bringing her boot crashing down on to his toe.

On the buses FAMILIAR throughout the world, the bus – formerly omnibus – had its origins in France long before it became commonplace in the 19th century.

An edict by Louis XIV established the first bus service in Paris in 1662. The occasion was marked by a grand fete: the new conveyances were originally intended for the poor and infirm.

The horse-drawn vehicles had to run at fixed hours from place to place whether full or empty – just like today.

At the time this was a novelty and fired the public imagination.

The new transport became in vogue and for a time the beau monde (fashionable society) monopolised the services.

However, wealthy people eventually tired of the innovation.

When the buses were also shunned by people originally meant to use them, the services gradually disappeared.

Paris revived buses in 1827, carrying up to 18 passengers inside.

A Mr Shillibeer introduced them to London in 1829 – they were dubbed shillibeers.

Amsterdam followed 10 years later. By 1874 they were said to be in “all large cities and towns in the civilised world”.

Horse-drawn buses were later supplemented by tram services in some districts.

Electric trams began appearing around 1900 and these operated successfully, mostly in urban areas, for decades alongside buses.

Running smoothly on lines or tracks set in the road, they were able to carry passengers on two decks.

At about this time, the introduction of motor buses helped to transform long and short journeys both in towns and across country.

Liverpool Corporation operated distinctive green buses largely within the city boundaries.

Areas outside the city were served by bus companies such as Ribble, Lancashire United and Crosville.

Crosville operated local services over a vast area from south Lancashire to south Wales, including Wirral and Cheshire.

The company was started in Chester in 1906 by George Crosland Taylor who had a French business associate called Georges Ville, hence Crosville.

Among motor bus pioneers when roads were still largely dominated by horses, Crosville’s first bus service was between Chester and Ellesmere Port Until about 30 years ago the Liverpool’s Pier Head had a large bus terminus, last stop for many city suburban services. n Learn more about the history of Liverpool at the Museum of Liverpool, Pier Head, open 10am to 5pm every day. Wizards Thatch for a romantic stay

JUST imagine falling into a Harry Potter novel – that’s exactly how I felt when I had the chance to stay at Wizards Thatch.

Just over the border in Cheshire, Wizards Thatch is five star boutique accommodation in the celebrity hotspot of Alderley Edge. We stayed in The Wizardry in the oldest part of the building reputedly going back over 400 years.

On entering you step back in time and are dazzled by all the memorabilia that surrounds it walls which are painted in dark Arabian Red. This is an historian’s sweetshop - everywhere you look there is something of interest that takes your eye. The lounge is big with a low beamed oak ceiling and sumptuous settees.

Eat like a local on your next Italian holiday

AMAZING wines, fascinating history and vistas to die for, Italy has been top of the destination charts for decades.

And with Liverpool John Lennon Airport now offering flights to no less than six destinations, there’s no better time to go.

Regardless of what takes you there, there is always that one thing that pulls people in from all over the world – the food.

Now, I know most of us probably think that it’s as simple as pizza and pasta, and you’re not wrong.

But Italian cuisine offers so much more and, if you get it right, every mealtime is pure joy.

Here are my tips for experiencing the very best of Italy... n Do NOT ask for Spaghetti

Bolognese!

A classic dish found on most menus is Ragù alla Bolognese – not to be confused with Spaghetti Bolognese. Never ask for spaghetti Bolognese in Italy – it’s not an authentic dish! The ‘real’ Bolognese is a meat based sauce served over fresh tagliatelle pasta, topped with a generous spoonful of Parmigiano Reggiano cheese.

Yum! n Embrace the veggie life Italy is close to paradise for veggies. There are plenty of delicious dishes that cater for both vegetarian and pescatarian diets plus a growing vegan scene.

Aubergine is the star of many veggie dishes and I recommend Parmigiana di melanzane, fried aubergine, smothered in layers of cheese and tomato sauce, and Pasta alla Norma. I’m not sure who Norma is but this pasta dish is sublime and usually served with

smoked ricotta cheese on top. n Fast food, Sicilian style Perfect for casual lunches or a quick (but hardly light!) snack, I give you ‘Arancini’! Deep fried stuffed rice balls straight out of Sicily, they are a real crowd pleaser all over the country. They come with a variety of fillings like ragù (meat sauce), fungi (mushroom), cheese and much more. BEWARE – they really are as good as they sound. n Go for ‘slow food’ The Slow Food movement started in Italy in the 80’s and promotes local food and traditional cooking. Each region of Italy has their own regional speciality meat, cheese, dish or wine. Find out what they are by asking the locals and join the slow food revolution!

n Gelato like a pro Yes, it really is different there and yes, it really is delicious. Each town has a gelateria that is ‘the only place to go’, find out where it is and hot-foot it over there.

Avoid places where the ice cream is piled high - looks tempting but it’s very much style over substance. n Breakfast the Italian way Pick a nearby cafe and order a cappuccino and a brioche/ cornetto (that’s a croissant to me and you). I recommend the alla crema filling but only for those with a sweet tooth! For seasoned coffee drinkers, order an espresso or macchiato but make sure you drink it standing up at the bar, just like the locals.

Filming in Liverpool continues to break records LIVERPOOL Film Office is not only celebrating its 30th anniversary but also a ‘reel-y’ top performance in 2019, breaking all records for the fourth consecutive year.

Latest figures show that the Liverpool City Region enjoyed a bumper year for filming, with 324 different film and TV projects filming here.

Over the years, the city has welcomed high-end TV dramas such as The Crown, Years and Years, War of the Worlds and Sky Atlantic’s Tin Star.

Executive producer for Tin Star, Alison Jackson said: “Filming in Liverpool has been a

fantastic experience. Liverpool City Region provided us with a wealth of cinematic locations, and the support we received from Liverpool Film Office and the people of this city has been instrumental in creating our explosive third series.”

This is great news for the local economy which saw a £17.6m boost in as a result – an increase of £1.5m on 2018.

Deputy Mayor, Councillor Wendy Simon, said: “We can safely say Liverpool is maintaining its crown as one of the most filmed cities outside of London.”

A support group with a difference 5k Your Way is a communitybased initiative to encourage those living with and beyond cancer, families, friends and those working in cancer services to walk, jog, run, cheer or volunteer at a 5k Your Way parkrun event on the last Saturday of every month.

Each of our 5k Your Way, Move Against Cancer parkruns has two of our wonderful ambassadors there on the last Saturday of every month to meet and great you at a designated meeting spot.

Our Ambassadors are your ‘go to’ for each event and will run/ walk with some of you if they can.

After the walk/run, the ambassadors will gather you together for socializsng over a much needed drink and cake.

This initiative was founded

by Lucy Gossage, Oncologist at Nottingham City Hospital, a 12 times Ironman Champion and Gemma Hillier-Moses, International Runner and Founder

of MOVE charity who was diagnosed with cancer herself at the age of 24 in 2012.

Lucy and Gemma are both hugely passionate about supporting people living with and beyond cancer through the power of movement, also supporting the wider cancer community including friends, family members, doctors, nurses and health professionals.

Our Liverpool 5k Your Way takes place at Prince’s park run on the last Saturday of every month.

MY thoughts are that it is always a good idea to have a range of drinks available, when guests, family or friends, come to visit.

Looking for something to please prior to a meal if dining and to pair with starters – leaving main course wines to everyone’s own choice – and making suggestions for dessert accompaniments, I located the following.

Many people like to be greeted with a sherry. Dry, pale, cream or sweet – each to their own.

Also, something sparkling is always a good ‘intro’ and sparkling wines are regularly served at events and occasions. Asti Martini ticks this box, admirably.

This Italian production is aromatic and sweet, using Moscato Bianco grapes to great advantage.

Fruits are very pleasantly evident on the mouthfeel, for this popular sparkler.

Truth is, it has always been a regular choice for a lot of connoisseurs.

Raspberry & Rose Gin Liqueur is produced using raspberry and rose flavours.

Busy modelling at one of my favourite places HEY guys and welcome to March / April issue of Life ‘n’ Style!

I have been really busy these past few weeks with photo shoots for Matalan, Pretty Little Thing, Missguided and MissPap at The Shankly Hotel in Liverpool City Centre. Definitely one of my fav places to work…

I get asked all the time why I love working at this venue and the reason is, unlike the majority of hotels where the rooms are all the same, the rooms here offer something totally different.

Each room tells a story with a different theme, colours and décor, even down to the baths or Jacuzzi in the bathrooms.

This is ideal for me when I’m promoting outfits or underwear as I always choose a room and colour scheme to compliment that look.

For this reason, it’s become really popular with groups of young girls as it has the best backgrounds and backdrops for the perfect selfie!

Also, keep your eyes peeled as the programme I was filming a few months back at The Shankly is going to be on TV in the next few weeks.

I really liked this Pink Faux Leather Plunge Puff Sleeve Dress (£35 – Missguided) – the material is so soft and feels really expensive. It has a really nice fit too. I wore the size 10 and it fitted me perfectly.

It’s a proper ‘Barbie’ dress but really flattering on the waist and bum.

The size 10 fitted me like an actual glove!

Allergies in dogs ALLERGIES are extremely common in our canine companions. Just like Hay Fever in people, once our furry friends develop these allergies they are here for life.

The allergens cause itching behaviours such as scratching, rubbing, chewing or excessive grooming of the skin as well as scooting and/or head shaking.

Itching leads to multiple skin lesions, i.e. reddening, alopecia and skin trauma.

This leads to infection. Dogs can have these allergic flare-ups seasonally or throughout the entire year.

We can do specific blood tests to see what an individual dog’s allergic trigger is but most the time this is not possible.

Therefore we need to control these flare ups by breaking the itch cycle with oral medication and topical skin products and try to minimise flare ups with ongoing management, i.e. diet, longterm medications, parasite control, shampoos and creams.

You should seek veterinary care with any skin condition as constant itching and sore skin can lead to chronic skin issues as well as behavioural problems such as restlessness and depression.

Cats of the month – Archie and Athena ARCHIE is seven months old and would like a home with his mum Athena (two years old).

He was born outside and it’s taken a while for our us to gain their trust.

They are still a little shy but in a quiet, patient home they will come on really quickly.

Dog of the month – Tia TIA is a delightful 10-year-old Staffy cross who just adores being around people, even though she spends a great deal of time asleep!

She’ll have a mad five minutes where all the toys come out of the box and are thrown about, then she’ll settle down for another nap.

She is still active and enjoys her walks, and she can live with children aged eight and over.

Tia would rather be the only dog at home and she is perfectly house-trained.

W4s start the new year with a bang A NEW year has definitely signalled a new start for one Liverpool Sefton team, who have well and truly found their rhythm since 2019 rolled into 2020.

In five matches, they have managed four wins, 17 goals for and one clean sheet.

The string of results has launched them into third place in the league, a steady ascent up from ninth place back in November.

Their climb up the league has been replicated by the W3s who are also in third place in their league.

Despite the new challenge this season of different opposition and some long distance away games, the team has fought week in week out to stake their place in the top half of the league.

The players are relishing the challenge, even a defeat away to Carlisle couldn’t dampen the spirits on the W3s “party bus”.

The M1s have steadied the ship and settled into the middle of the table in their league.

They’ve looked steady in sixth since the first week back after Christmas but with only three points separating sixth and 10th position, the league is tight with everything still to play for.

Outside of league action, the #juniorSTIX sessions are going from strength to strength and we’re delighted to see both

South’s Mason Nevitt in action. He has recorded three hattricks among his 23 goals this season.

Can Woolton hold on at the top of the Premier Division?

AT THIS crucial stage of the season all eyes are on MSB Woolton as they are at the top of the Premier Division in the Liverpool Premier League and they are looking to win the title for the first time in their history.

At this moment in time they are nine points clear at the top but nearest rivals Liverpool Nalgo have two games in hand, with BRNESC and East Villa a further three points behind but also with games in hand.

At the bottom of the league it looks as though it could be a battle to avoid relegation for Alumni and Waterloo GSOB who

are both starting to be cut adrift.

In Division One The Empress currently lead with 36 points but Quarry Bank are hot on their heels with 31 points and four games in hand.

At the foot of the table things are looking bleak for Liverpool Hibernia who are currently pointless.

In the Youth Division the weather has played havoc with the fixtures but Warbreck are currently top with 30 points from 11 games.

Their nearest rivals are Litherland REMYCA who have 18 points with four games in hand.

SOUTH Liverpool FC remain on course to achieve a top-five position in the West Cheshire League first division after 14 games which is just over halfway through the league season.

The top-five position is the minimum position required if the club are to qualify for promotion to the next level of the football pyramid, the North West Counties League.

Of course the club need to satisfy certain ground grading criteria and the improvements need to be done by the end of March.

The club is waiting for the go-ahead for funding from the Football Stadia Improvement Fund and then the requisite work can be done.

South’s first team remain unbeaten in the league after 14 games with 11 wins including recent wins against Ellesmere Port Town by 3-2 with a hat-trick for leading scorer, Mason Nevitt, and a 2-1 away win at Redgate Rovers with goals from Cameron Dalton and Brad Williams.

The team has also made progress in the league cup with a 5-0 win over the current league champions, Newton, with two goals from Dalton and one each for Williams, Peter McShane and Stuart Cornfoot.

South’s reserve team have reached two semi-finals which will be played next month.

The team defeated Valley Old Boys by 5-1 with two goals for Sharif Yusuf and one each for Kalif Koura, Michael Speed and Ciaran Fitzsimons in the Liverpool County FA Junior Cup and Maghull Reserves by 3-2 with two goals for Curtis Cummins and one for Neil Roach in the West Cheshire League second division cup.

The club’s under 21s have also reached a semi-final by defeating St Helens Town under 21s in the Liverpool County FA Sunday Intermediate Cup by 3-1 with two goals from Curtis Elias and one for Lewis Scott.

The club’s Sunday veterans first team have also reached a semifinal having defeated Hindsford on penalties in the Cheshire Veterans League cup. The team had been 4-0 up with three goals from Curtis Cummins and one for Mark Ellison but were clawed back to 4-4 with minutes to go.

The team kept their nerve in the shoot-out and triumphed by 4-3.They remain on course to win the Premier Division title and gave themselves a major boost with a 12-0 thrashing of Moore United with eight goals for Curtis Cummins and three for Mark Ellison and one for Neil Roach.
