Delayed Care in Covid 19 Pandemic Treatment has been delayed for millions of patients while the NHS has focused on managing the pandemic. GPs in many areas are still unable to refer as normal and it has been reported that even urgent referrals are being delayed. The NHS Confederation has warned that 10m people could be on NHS waiting lists by Christmas.

Cancer Research UK warned in May that 2.4m patients were waiting longer for scans or treatment because of disruption to services during the pandemic. The Medical Protection Society has urged the government to commit adequate resource and support to clear the backlog of referrals and delayed follow-ups.

Delays in treatment cover a wide range of issues and it could be that a patient does not receive prescribed medication, a laboratory test is ordered but not reported on, the patient is lost to follow up or a surgical operation is cancelled (perhaps on multiple occasions) and does not take place within a recommended timeframe.

Thankfully in the vast majority of situations a delay, whilst an inconvenience, will not result in any significant injury. Unfortunately in some situations time is however a critical factor because often the earlier a diagnosis is made and treatment commenced, the better the chances of a patient making a good recovery. If treatment is delayed, this can lead to permanent complications and health issues which could have been avoided. It is therefore

imperative that delays are minimised and treatment and investigations categorised as urgent are prioritised, even in these challenging times.

By way of an example, you shouldn’t have to wait more than 2 weeks to see a specialist if your GP suspects you have cancer and urgently refers you. In cases where cancer has been confirmed, you shouldn’t have to wait more than 31 days from the decision to treat to the start of treatment.

This is because early and accurate diagnosis and treatment can be critical.

A delay in diagnosis and treatment of orthopedic injuries such as fractures can also have devastating consequences. It is critical that certain fractures, such as to the wrist or ankle are diagnosed without delay in order that they can be immobilised and surgery considered. Delay can affect how the bones heal and cause a permanent loss of function impacting upon all aspects of life including employment.

“But it has become so much more than we ever thought it could be.

“We have met more of our neighbours and become a real community.

“We have started growing herbs, plants and vegetables; we’ve even started a communal compost bin as well as reusing and recycling.”

The Berrington Community Gardens have rightly attracted attention from far and wide,

receiving visits from local councillors, MPs and have featured in The Guardian and The Echo.

Not to mention several radio and TV appearances.

The gardens have their own Instagram page (@ berringtoncommunitygardens – give them a follow) and have inspired many other communities to come together and do the same in Liverpool, Stockport and Didsbury.

Well done to everyone

Community Hubs OLD MAPS graphically illustrate how communities change as the built environment expands to accommodate growing populations.

Edwardian south Liverpool was like a patchwork quilt of contrasting areas, dotted with growing villages about to be enveloped by the tentacles of the expanding city.

The coming of the railways saw clusters of new houses growing around stations as early commuters enjoyed their ideal of living in the country while working in the town.

This was a concept virtually unknown before the early 1800s when rich and poor often lived side by side. In Liverpool, merchants lived “over the shop” – their grand houses in Duke Street with offices and warehouses behind.

As the roads improved and the railways expanded after 1830, the suburbs grew. Hunt’s Cross

was transformed from a sleepy backwater with the arrival of a Cheshire Lines station in 1874.

Soon there was a row of semi-detached villas among other developments. Railways also attracted visitors – Hunt’s Cross was a popular starting point for picnic parties heading for local beauty spots.

The growth of Gateacre was also closely linked to the railway where the station – also on the Cheshire Lines – opened in 1879.

already established as an attractive residential area for Liverpool’s wealthy merchants.

Large houses such as Gateacre Grange, The Priory and Belle Vale Hall were dotted around the semi-rural area. By 1907, Gateacre was a large community with many different properties, private estates and farmland.

Garston was still a picturesque village when the first dock opened in 1846. As well as being a fishing community, there was some industry – salt had been

produced since the end of the 18th century.

Unlike Liverpool, Garston’s docks were owned by railway companies and were linked to the train network. Maps reveal a complex system of lines running up to the quaysides alongside ships.

Woolton is among the oldest community hubs, one of the first settlements in modern-day Liverpool going back to at least the Iron Age. A group of young and old men are seen enjoying the sunshine on an Edwardian postcard of Woolton Village.

Fundraising for Sophie Music duo are ones to watch WE ARE currently fundraising for a little girl from West Derby called Sophie Gould.

Sophie is four years old and has a life limiting condition called Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 1 which stops the muscles in her body from growing.

Sophie is heavily reliant on her ‘Whizzy Big’ power chair to move around her home freely however due to the size of her home this is not fully possible at the moment.

The main objective of our fundraising is to raise £25k towards the completion of a major adaptation project to her home.

We would like to thank the local businesses in the West Derby area that are all supporting our fundraising efforts so far. They have made a huge difference.

A Level students secure places A BIG congratulations to everyone at St Helens College and Knowsley Community College!

Lau’s 18 brings Cantonese flair to Allerton Road RECENTLY, I tried out a new Chinese takeaway which has opened up in Beijing City’s old spot.

But with new management, the chippy is no more and in its place is Lau’s 18 (or L18 as it is also known) run by Paula, who has 35 years in the restaurant business, and she is joined by her husband and son in the kitchen.

To start, the standard prawn crackers were included in the order but there was nothing standard about the sweet chilli sauce that came with them.

Less sweet and a little more chilli, giving it a nice kick. Lovely stuff.

For our starters I picked the pork Sui Mai and my partner had the Salt and Pepper Squid.

The Sui Mai was lovely, just as you would expect them to be, but the squid was divine.

Cooked to perfection and the salt and pepper seasoning was incredibly moreish.

Then came the mains. I went for Mixed Szechwan with noodles as I was in the mood for something spicy.

It was a lot spicier than I expected (am I losing my edge?)

However, we noticed a great range of vegetarian and vegan options and all the sauces can be adapted for anyone who is gluten-free.

I can honestly say it was the best Chinese I have had in ages.

The food was full of flavour and the portions were so generous.

Paula told us with sincerity that the most important thing for her is that her customers enjoy the food. What more can you ask for?

My partner chose Kung Po Chicken with egg fried rice and while we both enjoyed everything, we decided this one was our favourite – a perfect balance of savoury, spicy and a lovely hint of sweetness.

Mike’s photos go on display STRAWBERRY Field is excited to announce the opening of Mike McCartney’s photographic journey of the Strawberry Field redevelopment, ahead of his book launch later this year.

Known professionally as Mike McGear, Mike is an outstanding performing artist and rock photographer who was a member of the groups The Scaffold and Grimms.

His photographs offer an insight into the new development, the vision and the journey, which have never been seen before.

Mike said:“I was asked by the Salvation Army, well, mainly by Lady Judy Martin OBE actually, to record the demolition of the old Strawberry Field homes and the rebuild of a new facility on the same site.

“The trouble was how do you make the bashing down of old houses and the building of a new bricks and mortar one interesting to the public?! Well, here’s a start!

“I hope this mini-exhibition of images whets your appetite and that you enjoy it.”

A special exhibition featuring some of Mike’s photographs will go on display in the Strawberry Field centre, alongside the visitor exhibition.

The exhibition covers the interwoven stories of the Salvation Army, the children’s home, John Lennon’s childhood and the writing of Strawberry Fields Forever.

The addition of the Mike

McCartney photographs will offer a unique opportunity to visitors, with a never before seen insight into the redevelopment of the current site.

Mike’s book, filled with an inspiring collection of images, will go on sale later this year.

As a special offer to celebrate the re-opening, Strawberry Field’s visitor experience is priced at £7 per person until the end of September and under 16s accompanied by an adult go free.

NHS workers and a guest can also visit free of charge.

All funds generated by the visitor experience go towards funding a Steps to Work programme for young people with learning difficulties and other barriers to employment.

New healthy drinks business makes it easier to live well THE idea for Jacky Lam’s new business, Cactus Drink Well, started back when he was a child, living with his sister who was very ill.

He said: “My earliest lesson was that healthy eating is more than getting your five a day - it’s about drinking, feeling and living ‘well’.”

While juices and smoothies are great ways to get vital nutrients, many shop-bought examples aren’t.

So Jacky had an idea: what if we could buy unadulterated, nutritionally balanced and fresh products ready-made, delivered straight to our doors? So Cactus was born!

We were lucky enough to try out some of the cold-pressed juices and smoothie kits. The verdicts are in....

Juices Cold pressed juices can seem unappealing at first glance to those who are new to it – but not these juices. I noticed very little separation and all they needed were a quick shake.

They were smooth to drink and definitely no unwelcome ‘bits’ left at the bottom.

Timeless Mary has a lovely deep red colour thanks to the beetroot. I was surprised to read the ingredient list after taking a sip.

It’s a blend of rich vegetables with a dash of lemon and although it has an earthy taste to it, it was

surprisingly sweet and refreshing.

Ginger Ninja was next and a clear favourite! I have never been convinced by green juices in the past but this was a winner. The taste of fresh ginger and lemon shine through, giving me a great boost and an excellent start to the day.

Smoothie Kits As someone who has experimented a lot with a Nutribullet, trying to get the right balance for a perfect smoothie (often with more fails than wins!), I was so excited to see these kits.

The sachets are easily stored in the freezer and give you the base to your smoothie using fruit and/ or vegetables.

Each sachet has instructions on what basic liquids need to be added – stick it all in the blender and you’re done.

Not only did I save time, I actually managed to make a Green Goddess smoothie that didn’t taste like feet. Winning!

by Councillor Richard Kemp and Julie Gornell in its new temporary home of Penny Lane. We all of course understand the significance of this chosen location but as well as the success of the song, John actually lived in the area for five years. The sculpture was created by Laura Lian and will stay at the Penny Lane Neighbourhood Centre for two months before it goes to its new location by St Barnabas Church.

You’re under arrest FREDA loved the freedom of the wild waves, running into the foaming sea and cavorting like a sealion in the tumbling surf.

She worked hard at Ed Waring-Thynne’s wig emporium in Bold Street. It was a demanding job creating convincing hairpieces six days a week.

On her day off she headed for the beach – Formby was her favourite. It was a glorious summer day when she walked towards the sands.

The only sign of life apart from the wheeling seabirds were distant horses and carts trawling for shrimps in the shallows.

She changed into her costume, hid her clothes behind a tree stump and ran across the sands.

Freda felt invigorated and free. The cold water tingled delightfully as she plunged into the briny.

A strong swimmer, she struck out through the waves then floated on her back, enjoying the sun warming her body.

Clouds billowed in the blue sky. A light breeze ruffled the luxuriant grass in the sandhills.

She dived beneath the waves, pirouetting about in the sandy water, twisting and turning energetically.

Freda could hold her breath for several minutes, enjoying swimming along the sandy seabed.

She surfaced and took a deep breath.

Floating on her back once more, a feeling of contentment spread over her.

She closed her eyes. The sun felt very warm.

Looking up, she noticed all the clouds had vanished and the sky was a perfect blue.

“I must have drifted down the coast,” she said to herself, noticing some unfamiliar dunes and banks.

Freda looked again. The shrimpers had gone but there was one solitary figure on the beach.

She swam to the shore, walked out of the water and tried to get her bearings.

“Hey lady!” an authoritarian voice thundered behind her. Freda swivelled round to see a portly figure striding towards her.

Strange Tale

The policeman grabbed her arm and pulled her along. “You’re under arrest,” he announced.

“What for?”

“Indecent exposure honey. We don’t permit those goddam skimpy swimming costumes in California. It’s a breach of the regulations.”

Freda wondered what on earth was happening as the policeman bundled her into a hut half covered in sand.

Puzzled, she sat on the floor for a minute before pushing open the door.

There was no sign of the officer – just the prints of size 10 boots going into the distance.

Freda looked uneasily up and down the beach. Mystified, she managed to find her clothes and headed for the station.

Sat on a platform bench waiting for the train, she struck up a conversation with two local women, telling them what happened.

“That was only Old Bert,” said one nonchalantly, laughing. “He’s harmless.”

“Loves American films,” said the other.

“Thinks he’s a Keystone Cop or an extra in a Charlie Chaplin film. Everyone around here knows him.”

Freda said nothing.

You can be active – whatever your health A NEW campaign is being launched encouraging people with health conditions to be more active.

Liverpool City Council’s Public Health and Physical Activity and Sports Development teams are working in partnership with Sport England and NHS Liverpool Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) to provide activities and support targeted at those aged between 40 – 75 years.

It is the latest phase of the Fit for Me physical activity campaign, which has reached more than100,000 people across the city since its launch in 2016.

Fit for Me offers the opportunity to help motivate people to improve their health and wellbeing, quality of life and encourage positive changes to their lifestyles.

It features inspirational stories of local people with health conditions and how becoming active in a way that works for them has helped with their mental and physical health.

Naheed Tahir (pictured), 53 and from Mossley Hill, said. “About four years ago, I had a breakdown and was diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

“For the sake of my family, I knew I needed to sort out my mental health.

“Even now, I find that keeping active is the best way to manage my symptoms and flashbacks. Feeling better always comes back to

physical activity.

“My mental health is directly linked to how I feel in my body. As soon as I’m active, that makes me much better mentally – much, much more positive, even during lockdown.”

What advice would she give to those looking to get active?

“Start small,” she added. “If you’ve got five

minutes to sit down on a chair and just move one part of your body, your arms or legs, that’s great.

“You can build from there. Also think about why you want to do it. What’s your big reason?”

Liverpool Without Walls brings culture back to the streets ALMOST 50 cultural organisations sector. and freelance artists have been awarded money to bring art and performance to Liverpool’s city centre streets.

For the next stage of the ‘Liverpool Without Walls’ project, commissions have been funded for projects ranging from live music, theatrical performance, dance, light installations, murals, photography exhibitions and street animation.

Dog of the month – Aspen

THREE-year-old Akita, Aspen hasn’t seen a great deal of the outside world until recently so he’s full of joy and excitement at all these new things.

He’s a lovely boy who is exceptionally strong, and also typical of his breed, very aloof and independent.

He’s slowly learning how to play so would love to find a family aged over 16 who can show him how to have fun.

Aspen does get along with other dogs but he has a lot to learn about canine etiquette, so

South start with a bang

AFTER the longest break from competitive football since the Second World War, South Liverpool FC commenced the new season with an emphatic 5-1 win over Chester-based Upton AA. All three of South’s main strikers, Cameron Dalton, Mason Nevitt and Alex Woodcock, found the net while centre back Phil Ojapah scored his first goal for the club.

South had experienced a very good pre-season with impressive results against North West Counties League opposition.

A 2-1 win over AFC Liverpool, with goals from Joel Douglas and a Cameron Dalton penalty, was matched by a 2-1 win over Burscough with goals from midfielder Steve Doyle and a great strike by Dalton.

A 1-1 draw with Litherland Remyca, with a goal from Nevitt, completed an impressive trio of results although there were defeats to NW Counties side Warrington Rylands and Cheshire League Eagle Sports and a thumping 5-0 win over West Cheshire League Second Division side South Sefton Borough with two goals for Dalton and one each from Nevitt, Ojapah and Bradley Williams.

The six-month gap in competitive football meant that some of the development work on South’s ground was delayed but all the work was completed by early September.

This involved the construction of a safe, unimpeded walkway

for players and officials from the changing rooms to the pitch and the straightening of the spectator barriers directly behind both goals.

The ground should now pass the ground grading for the next level of the football pyramid, the North West Counties League, but any snags will be easily resolved as the next grading deadline is March 2021.

The club’s expansion has continued with the creation of a third open-age Saturday team, playing in the Liverpool Old Boys League First Division, and a youth team in the West Cheshire League Youth Division.

The club’s record in the latter league is second to none and the early signs are very encouraging for the new team, managed by Steve Snow.

Their first league game saw a 3-0 away win against an older Marshalls team with goals from Chris Rawlinson, a penalty from Charlie Grimshaw and one from Owen Griffiths, the latter returning to football after a year out through injury.

The club’s reserve side started the season with a hard-fought 2-1 win over newly promoted Marine Reserves with goals from Curtis Cummins and Tom Feeley, the latter making his debut and scoring within ten minutes of coming on as a substitute.

The league wins over Upton AA and Marine Reserves saw the first showing of the club’s new kits, part of a two-year sponsorship deal with the energy company Utilita, the four-figure sponsorship being the largest in the club’s recent history.
