STAMP DUTY HOLIDAY It is not often that the Chancellor of the Exchequer brings us good news in the way of taxation but he certainly did on the 7th July by announcing what is effectively a Stamp Duty holiday on residential properties.

In simple terms those who are buying their first home or moving from one residence to another will pay no stamp duty provided the purchase price does not exceed £500,000.00 This is a great bonus as many people especially those who are trading up will have had to pay Stamp Duty if there purchase price exceeded £125,000.00 First Time Buyers were a little better off as the free rate for them was £300,000.00 but the real winners here will be the second and subsequent Buyers moving home.

If someone, other than a first time buyer, completed a purchase before the 8th July 2020 they would if the purchase price exceeded £125,000.00, have had to have paid stamp duty. For example a person moving home and Buying for £200,000 would have paid 2% between the £125k and the £200k, namely £1500.00.

I gets better! At £300k a Buyer

will save £5000.00 and at £400k £10,000.00 The rate bands continue to increase with a maximum saving of £15000.00.

Even for those buying a second property there are savings to be made. There is still a levy of 3% on the first £500,000 but previously this would have been an additional payment to the former rates.

It should be remembered that these savings are in relation to the residential market and not the commercial market which has its own rate bands.

All holidays come to an end at some point and this new relief is no different. The new relief applies for completions of properties from the 8th July up to and including 31st March 2021. No doubt there will be a massive rush to complete within those time periods so hopefully it will do what it is meant to do, namely stimulate the housing market.

Thank you to a local star From Moira Hesketh, editor of The LINK LINK STAR

IT GOES without saying that the last few months have been the most unprecedented times for all us.

But what we have seen during this time is local stars standing up and making their mark on the wellbeing of our communities.

They could be volunteers who have been and are helping vulnerable people during lockdown, they might be careworkers working tirelessly throughout, or they could be people like George, who has been

working hard keeping your area tidy.

Woolton Village has been in the local news recently, being reported as a ‘problem area’ due to large gatherings in the centre of the village.

Unfortunately, these gatherings resulted in excessive littering in

the streets and public areas of Woolton.

Many of our readers have contacted The LINK in recent weeks to sing the praises of George Gregory, who is responsible for keeping Woolton Village tidy.

I stopped by and had a chat

with George recently to say thank you for all his hard work.

George, from Netherley, has been working for Liverpool City Council’s Cleansing Department for 16 years.

George loves his job as it gives him the chance to be out in the fresh air and keeps him active outdoors.

“I meet lots of nice people too and I take pride in keeping the village clean and tidy.”

Lark Lane’s outdoor makeover FOLLOWING Bold Street’s outdoor transformation, which saw the recent installation of outdoor eating areas, Lark Lane was named the next area to be transformed as part of the groundbreaking “Liverpool Without Walls” programme.

The first phase of “Liverpool Without Walls” involved the part pedestrianisation of Bold Street and Castle Street, which led to a number of eateries successfully opening up their outdoor areas on July 4.

To prepare for the change, Lark Lane became a one-way road from July 20 to enable restaurants on the iconic street to use areas outside their businesses to increase the number of people they can serve under social distancing guidelines.

The pilot scheme will also ensure eateries on Lark Lane are primed to capitalise on the new “eat out to help out” voucher which the government announced in July.

It is estimated that these street dining schemes, which will be

reviewed in consultation with business and residents, will add up to 1,000 hospitality covers a day across the city.

The new one-way system on Lark Lane, which allows vehicles to only enter from the Aigburth Road end, includes a series of new traffic measures to ensure the

safe movement of residents and visitors throughout the day.

These safety measures include: n Existing parking bays between Lark Way and Linnet Lane altered using signage and cones to provide footway for pedestrians. n Existing Keep Clear traffic order for Auckland College is not

affected. n Provision for loading bays, disabled parking bays and “open” parking bays throughout the north of the street between Lark Way to Lucerne Street and Pelham Grove to Linnet Lane. n Waverley Road and Little Parkfield Road are also one-way.

SADLY, a few weeks, ago my clinic in Hunts Cross was broken into.

Just as we were heading out of lockdown and trying to get back to work, someone broke in and of all things took my podiatry chair.

It’s been stressful to say the least, as I have not been able to work since March, due to Covid-19.

Being self employed, this has been a difficult time, particularly as I do not qualify for any of the government schemes.

Despite it being such a difficult time, it has also been very heartwarming.

All the lovely messages of support, patience and offers of help from the friends, strangers and the many people who are desperate to get their feet treated - you have kept me going, so a big thank you to all.

THE last few months have been a difficult time for a lot of us and with most of our day to day life put on hold, some economies have been hit much harder than others.

Unfortunately, it’s our local independent businesses that are suffering the most. Precovid, they were already facing stiff competition from big chains and supermarkets, but now many are struggling to survive.

As we start to return to this ‘new normal’, our local communities and businesses need us more than ever.

If we really want to see our local area and businesses survive and flourish, it’s time for us to step up and go the extra mile – or more accurately, stay close to home – to shop there.

Our independents need our support so they too can start looking to the future but why

shop local? What’s in it for us?

Four benefits of keeping it local 1. Pay it forward – Did you know that just £10 spent locally means £50 back into the local economy?

Imagine the difference we could make to our local area if we were each able to spend £5 a week in local businesses instead of big supermarkets and chains.

2. Embrace face to face – We all felt the effects of lockdown and many of us emerged craving human interaction after months at home.

So now’s the time to ditch that certain online retail giant and help the people in your area.

Get to know your local business owners and meet the faces behind the shop fronts.

3. A knock-on effect – While any business will employ local people to work there, they will often be using their own central HQ to help with services like accountants, suppliers, delivery, etc.

On the other hand, you’ll find that most local businesses will help each other out by using services in their area.

Now that’s what we call keeping it local!

4. Quality not quantity – An argument often used against shopping locally is that it can be more expensive.

While this is itself not entirely true, let’s think for a minute about what that means if you are able to spend that little bit extra.

Let’s look at a humble cup of coffee, you have two choices – one from a big wellknown chain or one from an

independent cafe.

Choose independent and you are probably going to get a better quality brew made with care.

It’s probably more sustainable as the products are brought in from local suppliers so don’t travel big distances.

They know where their products have come from and the suppliers themselves.

So next time you find yourself heading out for some groceries, a birthday card, clothes alterations, a sweeping brush or a bottle of wine, stop and think about where you want your money going to.

That small purchase could instead help invest in your area’s future.

Celebrating 40 years of practice at Gregory Abrams Davidson Solicitors THIS summer Gregory Abrams Davidson Solicitors celebrates its 40th anniversary.

Gregory Abrams opened the practice in June 1980 in Victoria Street Liverpool, followed by offices in Penny Lane in 1984 and Speke Road, Garston in 1989.

In 1987 the city office relocated to 20 Mathew Street.

“30 years later all three offices are as busy as ever,” quips director Harry Friend, now head of property in Liverpool.

In 2003 Davidsons Solicitors, a niche Commercial Firm, was incorporated to offer a comprehensive range of legal services.

Commercial and Residential Property and Business law complemented Private Client Probate services, Personal injury and Medical Negligence, and the Firm traded as Gregory Abrams Davidson.

The 2009 acquisition of London-based commercial and property firm, RJR Law, enabled the Law Firm to expand its services nationally beyond its North West profile.

Gregory Abrams, CEO, added: “It is quite amazing to look back

at the enormous changes over the past 40 years and our clients whom we have been proud to serve, delivering high quality legal services and also colleagues with whom I have been privileged to work.

“The biggest change has been in technology which has revolutionised the profession and our communications. At GAD,

Understanding their clients’ needs, giving sound advice and quality service over four decades have been the hallmark of the reputation earned by GAD. On a personal level Gregory looks back proudly to the large

number of graduates and trainees who, with the Practice’s support, developed their skills at GAD and have progressed within the Firm or developed their careers to be highly regarded as successful and prominent lawyers in their fields of expertise.

GAD has been involved in many notable landmark cases over the years and in streamlining the process for Housing Disrepair litigation in the 90’s, which changed the city’s landscape by forcing the replacement of many of the tower blocks in disrepair.

More recently has been its involvement in product liability litigation with the high profile metal on metal hip claims.

The current environment continues to be active especially with Property and Commercial work.

Over the last 40 years the Firm has been challenged by many different economic climates and changes but has been able to adapt and move with the times thanks to its investment in its people, their professionalism and reputation.

Hale’s ancient hall THE Ireland family settled in Hale around 1190 and made their mark in this part of historic Lancashire when Liverpool was a tiny port in the shadow of a towering castle.

The family were a powerful force in what was a remote landscape overlooking the wide Mersey estuary.

Hale Hall, pictured in 1908, was the seat of the Irelands. The fine ivy-covered brick mansion featured stone decorative features.

A huge studded wooden door in an arched entrance guarded a castellated tower. Another door, probably later, was set in a porch.

The Hall was filled with artworks, curiosities and manuscripts – an island of culture and an oasis of calm in a land of uncertainty wracked by civil wars.

Sir Gilbert Ireland, MP for Liverpool, largely rebuilt the Hall around 1674 but its origins were much earlier. Additional parts were built on 1802 from designs by John Nash, the great Regency architect.

By this time the Irelands had married into the Blackburne family whose name was derived from the Lancashire town.

John Blackburne was a powerful politician representing Lancashire in the House of Commons for 46 years, when the county had just two MPs. The ancient family took great pride in colourful genealogical displays – the Hall was festooned with heraldic shields.

A room in the oldest part of the building had shields painted on oak panels.

The Ireland Blackburne Quarterings represented family connections in a breathtaking heraldic display.

Medieval knights once carried shields displaying their crests into battle.

This was a display of family power by descent down the ages.

Some were surmounted by crests such as the Dove and Olive Branch and the Cock and Trumpet.

Books in the Hall’s library echoed the colourful shields. Twelve folios from the 14th and 15th centuries gave accounts of local happenings including shipwrecks, coroner’s

The area around the Hall – now a public park – had been improved in the 1870s with an entrance lodge built by John Ireland Blackburne.

It is an idyllic scene but the following years were not kind to Hale Hall. The Ireland Blackburnes moved out in the 1930s and the house abandoned after the Second World War. The ruins were finally demolished in 1981 but traces of walls can still be seen in the public park.

Liverpool’s black cabs are now contactless ALL Hackney cabs in Liverpool should now take contactless card payments, making travelling across the city safer and more convenient.

In April, the council’s Licensing Committee agreed to accept a proposal to make contactless card payments mandatory in all of the city’s 1,426-strong fleet of Hackney cabs.

The move was to bring Liverpool in-line with other big cities such as London, and it has also helped the black cabs keep pace with the city’s private hire vehicles, many of which already accept card payments.

It means that people travelling around the city, especially at night, do not have to rely on having cash on them to get home safely.

Free workshops for children with neurological conditions INNOVATIVE free dance and craft workshops for children with neurological conditions have opened to youngsters anywhere in Merseyside for the first time.

The Brain Changer Arts Project – launched last year by The Brain Charity thanks to funding from BBC Children in Need – harnesses the power of the arts to help some of the young people across the UK with neurological

conditions or brain injuries.

The fun weekly sessions, which are currently running as online video classes, provide physiotherapy through dance and occupational therapy through art and craft and are open to children of any age.

Sessions take place on Saturdays at 11am.

Wines: Pick and Mix

IN these modern times, there are so many different types of wines to choose from.

Each to their own and, for a range of ‘something for all’, I chose the following...

For white, Domaine de Peyssonnie Muscat Sec (Grapes: Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains) from Languedoc-Roussillon, France.

This is a very popular, dry, white wine, that pleases many. Another often-selected white wine is Garille Viognier – Sauvignon Blanc (Grapes: Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier).

Again, from the LanguedocRoussillon region, this dry, white wine, is also extremely popular.

From the bouquet, on the nose, to the mouthfeel, this is a ‘pleaser’, for so many white wine lovers.

If a rosé is preferred, then Var Les Richoises (Grapes: Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault) from Provence, France, does not disappoint.

This dry, rosé wine has much appeal – and the price is right!

For a red, my selection goes to Lirac Réserve des Capouliers (Grapes: Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault, Mourvèdre).

This production is from the Rhône and often chosen as a very good red wine, adorning dining tables, regularly.

A powerful wine, exuding a bouquet of ripe and juicy, red fruits. The mouthfeel continues the enjoyment, with a good finish

on the palate.

For sparkling wine lovers Bissinger Premium Champagne (Grapes: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Meunier) captures the mood, perfectly, with the balance and perlage adding to the occasion and enjoyment, superbly.

A wonderful production, that is favoured for many celebrations,

get-togethers and events.

Very capable of being enjoyed by themselves, I located this complete selection amongst the excellent range of wines/drinks at a Lidl store.

Also, I found very good value, plus advice on food pairings for wines and how to present to impress.

Liverpool FC celebrate title after 30 years WHILE The LINK has been away, Liverpool FC secured their 19th title and were crowned Premier League champions.

Key civic buildings across the city, including the Town Hall and St George’s Hall (as pictured), were lit up red for a week to mark the

achievement.

Unfortunately, the current pandemic means there will not be a victory parade in the near future, but we hope fans were able to celebrate sensibly (and socially-distanced of course!) in their own way.

Allerton in August THE next few months are going to be tough for our business people and they will need all the help that we can give them to stay afloat and hopefully thrive.

Imagine our area if most of the shops on Allerton Road, Rose Lane and Penny Lane, Woolton Village, Woolton Road and the Childwall Triangle closed because of lack of local support. The heart would be ripped out of our community.

In the past two months in Childwall, Allerton and Hunts Cross, Woolton and Liverpool 18 Lib Dem councillors have been talking to two sets of people.

1. The business community to ask what help they require. The support we want to give is not just for the hospitality sector but for all businesses who provide a wide range of services to local people, employing local people and spending their profits locally often using other local businesses.

2. The residential community to find out what services they require and what they are prepared to accept in terms of changes to their High Streets.

Local councillors have been working with the Mayor and Council staff on a programme of activity to help our bars, cafes

and restaurants and all businesses reopen but keep their customers safe and socially distancing.

In the city centre that has meant reducing traffic in some areas and extending pavement cafes.

Our job as councillors is to deliver changes is to try and mediate not only between residents and traders but also to mediate within these groups.

Not every trader wants there to be more pavement cafés for example and not every resident wants their provision to be restricted.

So, residents and businesses need to watch this space to find out what is happening.

Warning to Under 35s Public Health Officials are warning of a tick up in cases of coronavirus in S Liverpool in recent weeks. The NHS has had mobile testing stations out and are closely monitoring new cases.

It appears that young people generally are going out more (an who can blame them for that!) but are assuming that they are safe and so ignoring social distancing and other precautions.

Young people are being hospitalised in increasing numbers.

Young people might recover very quickly from the virus or not even notice it but the virus might have damaged their immune systems or have caused changes to their brains, bronchial systems, liver, kidneys and heart.

WE MUST NOT TAKE THE CORONAVIRUS FOR GRANTED. IT HAS NOT DISAPPEARED. IT IS LIKELY TO SURGE IN THE WINTER. YOUNG PEOPLE CAN DIE AS WELL!

The great summer staycation

the Clwydian Range in North Wales.

At 554m (1818ft), it’s ideal for a nice walk to the top with both gentle and more challenging ascents and then cracking views of Wales and Liverpool on clear days. It’s just a one-hour drive from Liverpool but feels like another world.

AS THE country starts moving once again, some of us are feeling the urge to scratch our itchy feet.

While it is important to remember that social distancing is still very much in place and encouraged, travel doesn’t mean that we have to go to some far flung exotic destination.

Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the glorious staycation!

The UK has wonderful places to visit and incredible landscapes that we often take for granted.

And while some might be tempted by the hills of Wales or the beaches of Cornwall, for those who prefer to stay closer to home this summer, it’s time to rediscover the wonders on your very own doorstep.

I’ve put together a list of some of my favourite day trips to do in and around Liverpool.

I can imagine most of you have done them before but when was the last time?

It might just be the time to make some new memories.

The Wirral ‘Over the water’ is a great day out and there really is something for everyone.

Costa del Liverpool Pick an area of Liverpool and imagine you’re on holiday.

Try a new cafe or restaurant, visit a gallery or museum you’ve never been to before, stroll around the local park or green spaces.

You could even check out The LINK’s What’s On section to see if there is a local market happening soon.

It doesn’t have to be town either, there are lots of great neighbourhoods in the city like Allerton Road, West Derby and Croxteth Park and Lark Lane with great things to see and experience.

Sunflower seeds EVERYONE was excited as the festival approached with the children’s costumes being prepared over several months.

Teacher Angela Petal decided to present a sunflower extravaganza. The dance school pupils would help design the complex creations to wear on the big day.

Deirdre and Daphne were particularly thrilled by the prospect. After the announcement, the sisters ran to their mother who worked at Browse & Drool, the High Street jewellers.

“Cleaner school run” to maintain lockdown air quality levels LIVERPOOL City Council is working with schools to encourage more walking and cycling on the school run come September.

The Council has written to every school in the city offering road safety measures to help maintain improved air quality created by the Covid-19 lockdown.

The council had already implemented a pilot project around eight primary schools in north and south Liverpool to promote walking and cycling in a bid to create a cleaner, healthier and quieter school run before the summer term ended.

And with air pollution levels down by a third as a result of the lockdown, the council is aiming to lock in more eco-friendly travel habits and routines when all schools return with full classrooms in September.

The pilot project included temporary one way measures and widened footpaths around schools.

The city council also supported a road safety trial project with walking and cycling charity – Sustrans, which saw road closures in West Derby at the start and end of the school day.

The trials will be analysed with a view to a wider roll out in September when schools return after the summer holidays.

It is anticipated that more than half of the city’s new 65-mile pop-up cycle lane network will also have been implemented by then.

Liverpool’s cycling and walking commissioner, Simon O’Brien, has also written an open letter to parents and guardians urging them to continue walking and cycling with

their children.

“One of the few positives that came from lockdown was the quiet streets on our doorsteps.

“We took to walking and cycling for our daily exercise or just to escape the inside of our homes and enjoy the clean air of our suddenly peaceful neighbourhoods.

“Let’s keep something good going as normality thankfully returns.”

AS FOOTBALL slowly emerges from the lockdown, South Liverpool have to start again in their bid to rejoin the ranks of semi-professional football after a 30-year absence.

Having topped the West Cheshire League 1st Division when football ceased in March, the season was declared null and void with no promotion to the North West Counties League being allowed.

Although South has done much of the development work required at the Jericho Lane Community Hub, including a 100-person covered accommodation and a 72-seater stand, there is still some fencing work to do.

The team will now need to be successful on the field during the new 2020-21 season although at the time of writing

there is no exact date for the recommencement of competitive football though it is hoped that all the required procedures will be in place for a start in September.

Pre-season friendlies can start from August although which grounds will be available is not currently known.

Full-scale training has just been given the green light after many weeks of having to train in small groups with no contact.

South are expecting to field no fewer than 19 teams next season, ranging from under 17s to a seniors team playing walking football, while expanding the partnership with the womens’ club, Liverpool Feds, who share the stadium pitch at Jericho Lane.

Alder Sports Club preparing for the return of football

IN THESE difficult times, at the time of writing the Government has announced that amateur football can recommence with friendlies in August and structured leagues from September onwards.

This has been a difficult time for Alder Sports Club, which is still unable to reopen its function room to generate income.

However the club has made three successful grant applications to the Football Foundation for pitch preparation, and work is under way to get the grass pitches

back to pristine condition.

Without this lifeline of a grant, it would be a real struggle to prepare for the recommencement of the football season.

This year sees an additional ladies’ football team join the fold under the banner of Nalgo Ladies.

This will supplement the current ladies’ team, Alder Ladies, plus the men’s open age teams of Liverpool Nalgo, Home and Bargain, Alder Warrior Christians and Alder Veteran teams.
