Once a guide always a guide DID you used to say Friday night was ‘Guide Night’?

Did you put on your uniform and join the 48th Liverpool Girl Guide Company at the old wooden hut, behind the British Legion building on Rose Lane, or since 1975, at ‘Clearview’ the purpose built Scout and Guide HQ? If you remember those days, you will be sorry to hear of the death of Mrs Clare Harrison in July this year, aged 95. Clare – or Captain, was leader from 1954 until 1975.

As guides we enjoyed all things outdoors, have fond memories of summer meetings held in the grounds of Carnatic Hall and of course travelling to camp!

Clare was a leader ‘ahead of her time’, meetings provided challenge, fun, encouragement and responsibility; joint events with the scouts meant activities like canoeing or abseiling could be sampled and this was long before the uniformed organisations discussed joint

meetings.

We give thanks to Clare for moulding the formative years of many young people in Mossley Hill.

Those who gathered for her funeral service spoke with gratitude at the vision she had of influencing our future and revelled in looking back through old photographs!

If you, or someone in your family had any connection with the 48th Liverpool Guide Company, remember Mo Payne or Elaine Pye? You may be interested to know that the unit will be celebrating its centenary in 2021.

Many past members will be unable to join us but we would like to hear from anyone who was a member and would ask if they still have contact with friends to spread the word so we can build up a list of contacts in anticipation of a ‘celebratory do’.

Fundraiser Michelle Sticking with safety needs your help MICHELLE Beaver (from Woolton) is off on another fundraising adventure and needs your help!

These adventures all started when her auntie and mum both needed help from Marie Curie Hospice at the end of their lives.

The care and attention they and the family received was excellent.

Michelle wanted to give back and has now completed numerous treks around the world, all to raise funds for the charity.

After completing treks across the Great Wall of China, through the jungles and mountains of Sri Lanka, and up and down the Grand Canyon in America, Michelle is embarking on her biggest challenge yet.

In June 2019 she will be climbing up Mount Kilimanjaro in aid of Marie Curie UK. This is classed as the top of Africa, standing at 5,895 metres above sea level, 19341 feet up!

Passengers are being targeted in the awareness campaign that sends the simple message: No booking, No insurance, No journey.

It’s a magnetic sign that is clearly visible on the side of private hire cars urging the public to always pre-book their journeys.

Plying for hire refers to the practice of private hire drivers picking up passengers on the street without the journey being booked in advance, and is illegal.

Melly Drinking Fountains

MANY of Liverpool’s leading citizens crowded into the Town Hall council chamber for the presentation to a man whose generosity had met a simple need: free, clean drinking water.

Wealthy merchant Charles Melly paid for high-quality granite drinking fountains to be installed around the town – the first in Britain.

He was inspired by similar fountains in Geneva, where his family originated.

Charles, who was presented with a beautiful silver table centrepiece, told the gathering in November 1861: “About nine years ago I was passing along the docks, when German emigration to Australia and the United States was very rife.

Nissan Qashqai is the one to beat...

MOST manufacturers offer an SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle) – in fact even the likes of Maserati have even followed suit. But Nissan has been at this game for a lot longer than some and as a consequence its latest Qashqai is the one to beat.

It’s a very competent package, attractive lines coupled with good levels of equipment and comfort.

There’s little to criticise.

On the road this type of vehicle sits between the height of a standard car and that of a larger 4x4 and it’s an extremely practical offering for a young family such as mine.

The rear seats offer enough space for my three little rascals in their cumbersome car seats and the interior is a hardwearing black leather and plastic. It needs to be hardwearing as throughout the course of the test the little darlings’ feet find their way to the hard plastic back of the front seats where they can reach them with their shoes; Henry finding this particular amusing. And then he

throws his new shoes off. What else do you do to break up the monotony of a long journey?

The panoramic glass roof helps to distract their attention from this little game and Henry (2) enjoys spotting birds and planes.

The cover for this roof is easily removed by the press of a button.

We take the Qashqai for a jaunt to Peterborough. The boot is generally large enough for all the luggage once the parcel shelf is removed.

The ideal driving position is easily achieved thanks to the electrically adjusted driver’s seat.

It’s a comfortable seat but over long journeys there is a lack of lumbar support for me.

Initially I find that my foot doesn’t have to lift the clutch very far at all for a gear change, which takes a little getting used to because my own car is the exact opposite.

Once I have overcome this the ride is smooth and the diesel unit is barely audible.

Its six speed manual gearbox is also smooth and easy to use while on long motorway journeys the basic cruise control is simple to engage. It’s not a complicated system by any means such as

those radar operated systems fitted to more expensive vehicles that measure the distance away from the car in front and automatically brake and accelerate accordingly. But I don’t mind this because so often these days it can feel like the driver is becoming redundant.

The Nissan needs the driver to think. The electric parking brake doesn’t cause any issues either while a reversing camera makes life easier, too.

At the rear are perhaps the smallest windows I have seen on a vehicle, all part of the design.

Death Bed Gifts are alive and well!

It is not uncommon for a terminally ill person (the Donor) to gift assets to a loved one in contemplation of their anticipated demise. Such “Death Bed” gifting, whilst not exactly a “lifetime gift”, is neither a “testamentary gift” (reserved for Wills).

How does the law view such situations and can an aggrieved beneficiary under a Will challenge the gift if the effect is to have severely reduced the value of any remaining property passing under a Will?

The concept is known legally as a Donatio Mortis Causa (or DMC for short!). The test requires the recipient of the gift to establish 3 facts: Firstly – the gift must be made in contemplation of death. The Donor must actually believe he is going to die. This may be because they are already seriously ill or they are approaching major medical treatment.

Secondly – the gift must be conditional on death. Therefore the gift only takes effect upon the death of the Donor. If they survive, the gift fails!

Thirdly – The Donor must part with what is legally described as “dominion” over the property to be gifted. This concept is often difficult to define, but like an “elephant”, you know one when you see one! A couple of examples may demonstrate the point: • Physically handing over the item, eg jewellery or the passbook to a building society account may be sufficient.

Similarly, handing over a key to a safe deposit box which contains unregistered title deeds to land may successfully gift the land to the Donor (a gift which carries, in today’s market, a considerable monetary value).

• However, the use of technology and the internet makes gifting some assets more problematic. How do you deal with a building society account that no longer has a passbook and is transacted solely “on-line”. How can you successfully pass dominion of Registered Land which in fact is both computerised and is not even evidenced by the ownership of a Land Certificate? These are questions that may well need to be debated before the Court.

The Courts will always be vigilant in scrutinising evidence advanced to support of a DMC. Whilst there is clearly scope for the unscrupulous to cheat and lie their way to a gift, it must be pointed out that the DMC can be established solely upon the evidence of the recipient if their evidence is deemed trustworthy.

Finally, when taking advice upon defending or challenging a DMC, careful consideration of the Donors mental capacity and the question of undue influence must be undertaken.

Capacity has an effective “sliding scale”. A modest gift, requires only a modest degree of understanding by the Donor. If however the gift is substantial, making any Will effectively worthless, the level of capacity will be the same that would be required to make a will as laid down in the leading case of Banks v Goodfellow [1870]. More problematic is the burden of proof required if an allegation of undue influence is raised. Straight forward lifetime gifts can see the Courts raising a presumption of undue influence depending upon the relationship between Donor and recipient (requiring the recipient to prove that they had not unduly influenced the Donor).

However, in the case of Wills, the burden is reversed. A disappointed beneficiary must prove that there was undue influence – the recipient has to prove nothing. The “million dollar“ question remains however as to whether the DMC is counted as a lifetime transaction (i.e lifetime gift) or a testamentary act (i.e. effectively a Will gift)?

Conclusion Whilst this doctrine continues to present on a regular basis to Lawyers, it cannot be emphasised that for the protection of both the recipient of the intended gift and for the general financial wellbeing of the remainder of the Estate, the uncertainty of these gifts could be removed completely by the writing and or updating of an individual’s Will. In this way, it is clear that the gift is to be made, the extent and context of the gift can be established and the effect of the gift upon the overall financial position of he Donor can be accurately assessed. To proceed in any other way, will only cause unnecessary heartache, uncertainty and costs!

Light up the Night – Let’s Glow Sponsored Walk WOODLANDS Hospice ‘Light up the Night’ – Let’s Glow is a new evening walk in the hospice fundraising calendar.

It’s a chance to get together with family and friends and have fun, whilst raising money to care for our patients and their families.

The walk takes place on Saturday 13th October and begins at Crosby Lakeside Adventure Centre, heading along the coastline before taking you around the leafy streets of Crosby and Waterloo.

The walk finishes back at the Lakeside Centre where there will be hot food and refreshments waiting, along with a medal and big thank you from us all.

There is a 5k and 10k option and, as there are prizes for brightest dressed, we are encouraging you to dress up as brightly as possible. Every participant gets a free Light up the Night t-shirt to wear for the walk and accessories will be available

to buy on the night. Fundraising is essential to keep Woodlands Hospice services running.

To continue to provide our services free of charge we need to raise more than £3,500 every day and we can only do this with your help.

LOCAL author David Stanley from West Derby has just had his first book (‘The Bag’) published.

The book revolves around an incident which takes place in West Derby and hopefully it will capture the thoughts and imagination of West Derby residents.

COLEMANS Removal Company was established in 1875 in Park Road, Toxteth, moving the household goods and furniture of the local gentry into the many new houses being built in the area.

In1900 the new depository which we see here was built to offer high security for the furniture and household goods of families who were moving out of the area for a period of time.

The depository was built to give the greatest security against any form of action be it fire or burglary and these measures were well tried in the 1981 Toxteth riots when, despite attempts to burn the building as well as breaking in, it remained secure although some damage was sustained to the access doors.

The last member of the

Coleman family was in charge of the business up to his retirement when it was sold to another operator.

The Depository building has now been put to a new use being converted into attractive apartments.

Reg Coleman F.R.P.S. was for many years a prominent member of the South Liverpool Photographic Society.

I’ll make you a star...

KIRSTY and Janice enjoyed shopping – from traipsing around big department stores and exploring small shops to visiting out-of-town supermarkets.

These were good places to spot talent, an integral part of their jobs. Kirsty produced low budget horror films, directed by Janice, screened at independent cinemas in small country towns before being released on DVD. They had met on a media studies course at university and filmmaking quickly become an obsession. The lead roles were usually played by professional actors but other parts were taken by anyone suitable who could be enticed with a small fee. Like other film makers and photographers, Kirsty and Janice talent spotted wherever they happened to be. It was in remote lane near Cockermouth where they encountered Bram Satterthwaite wielding a chainsaw among the hedgerows.

The two women, who were in

the area scouring vintage clothes shops for props and personal use, were entranced. “He’s a natural,” whispered Kirsty.

“Yes,” muttered Janice. “Look at the way he moves.”

“Chainsaws have been done to death,” said Kirsty. “It will have to be something different.”

“An axe massacre?”

“Possibly. He’s got the hands for it.”

Bram was a man of few words.

He listened intently as the two told him about their work. “I prefer chopping hedges,” he responded. The film was being made entirely on location. Bram

was persuaded to devote two days portraying a murderer silently stalking his victims through the Cumbrian landscape.

Janice found him difficult to direct but the finished footage was impressive. She wanted to encourage him: “I’ll make you a star,” she said soothingly as they drank coffee from polystyrene cups. He glowered at her, grabbing her hands as she looked away in embarrassment. Then Bram burst out laughing. His weatherbeaten face was transformed momentarily, becoming almost angelic. Janice was transfixed. She suddenly saw a startlingly different future for Bram Satterthwaite – for a start that name had to go.

Under her guidance he became Beaky Boggle, children’s entertainer.

They travelled the country, occasionally with a circus but mostly with lucrative bookings at country house parties.

Bram / Beaky would swing down from the rafters to terrify audiences before he burst into

loud, uncontrollable laughter.

He did become a star although it took extensive training by Janice: by this time Kirsty had taken over managerial duties, based in a London office. Beaky’s big break came when he was offered a CBBC show, a popular success.

His on-screen antics drew thousands of fans. Soon Beaky began to change. He smiled more often. Then he started to lock himself in a workshop he had acquired. Neighbours were mystified by the unmistakable sound of a chainsaw hacking away at wood. This was followed by delicate chipping sounds. Beaky announced that he wanted to be called Bram again. People marvelled at the wooden puppets he had created.

“Introducing Satterthwaite’s Marionettes,” he announced with a flourish.

“I think we’ve been chopped,” Janice told Kirsty philosophically. n Read my next Strange Tale – The Alchemist – in the November Link.

Stop smoking – 10 top tips IF YOU want to stop smoking, you can make small changes to your lifestyle that may help you resist the temptation to light up.

Think positive You might have tried to quit smoking before and not managed it, but don’t let that put you off. Look back at the things your experience has taught you and think about how you’re really going to do it this time.

Make a plan Make a promise, set a date and stick to it. Sticking to the “not a drag” rule can really help.

Whenever you find yourself in difficulty say to yourself, “I will not have even a single drag” and stick with this until the cravings pass.

Think ahead to times where it might be difficult, a party for instance, and plan your actions and escape routes in advance.

Consider your diet Is your after-dinner cigarette your favourite? A US study revealed that some foods, including meat, make cigarettes more satisfying.

Others, including cheese, fruit and vegetables, make cigarettes taste terrible.

So swap your usual steak or burger for a veggie pizza instead.

Change your drink The same study as above also looked at drinks. Fizzy drinks, alcohol, cola, tea and coffee all make cigarettes taste better. So when you’re out, drink more water and juice.

Identify when you crave cigarettes A craving can last five minutes. Before you give up, make a list of five-minute strategies. For example, you could leave the party for a minute, dance or go to the

bar. And think about this: the combination of smoking and drinking raises your risk of mouth cancer by 38 times.

Get some stop smoking support If friends or family members want to give up too, suggest to them that you give up together.

There is also support available from your local stop smoking service. Did you know that you’re up to four times more likely to quit successfully with their expert help and advice?

‘Banishing Bingo Wings’

I GET so many messages these days from women wanting to know about weight training and how to get rid of their ‘bingo wings’ so I thought I would put together a quick workout for this month.

To begin with, I suggest you use light weights and do between 15 -25 reps, 45 seconds rest in between the sets, three sets on each exercise Don’t worry about your arms ripping out your sleeves, Women don’t have enough testosterone to make big muscles.

Instead, your arms can become a lot more toned, and will help a sleeveless dress look even better.

Bicep Exercises: the bicep area is at the front of your upper arm. Do this first 1. Straight arm Barbell curls: Providing you don’t let your shoulders drop, or swing your back, or even move your upper arms, this can be a great and easy exercise.

Using a light bar or barbell, grab the bar with a undergrasp grip. The bar will probably be across the front of your thighs. Curl the bar up towards your chest, hold for a split second, and then slowly lower it back to

your chin, hold for a second, and slowly lower it back towards the starting position.

2. Preacher curls: Use a bicep curling machine for this exercise.

The movement of your arms will be restricted on this machine, therefore, you won’t need to use a heavy weight to create stress on the area.

Also, because the movement of your arms is restricted, you should immediately start to feel the area working. You will be seated in the machine, upper arms on the pad, and you will curl the handle towards

Tricep Exercises: The ‘Bingo Wings’ area.

1. Tricep dips. Just use a chair for this. Put your hands over the edge of the chair (tips of fingers almost pointing down towards the floor so the heel of your hands is on the chair). Step away from the chair. Now, you want to create a 90 degree angle at your elbow joint, and also a 90 degree angle at your knee joint. Lower your bottom towards the floor, so your arms are bending at the elbow joint and you are achieving a 90 degree angle at the elbow joint. Then push yourself up.

To begin with, maybe just go down half way, and build from there. You have to be careful with this exercise, as it can put stress on the shoulders so take it easy.

2. Triceps Pushdown. You will need a cable machine. My suggestion is to attach a straight bar to the cable. Grab hold of the bar with an overhand grip, and take the strain of the weight. For the starting position, the bar will be in front of your

chest, elbows tucked in to the sides, with the bar away from your chest.

The body will be upright and your forearms will be pointing upwards.

On the execution of the exercise, push the bar down towards your thighs, hold for a second, and then return it to the starting position.

3. For this exercise, you are going to use dumbbells. Lie on a bench or the floor, and grab a dumbbell in each hand. Extend the arms so the dumbbells are above your chest. Bend the arms and bring the dumbbells down either side of your head. Create a 90-degree angle at the elbow joint and then push the dumbbells back up. Hold for a second and then do it again.

Celebrity article – Samantha Fox

By Tim Saunders SAMANTHA Fox is probably best known for her chest but she is also a singer and an actress.

Busty blonde Sam was discovered by The Sunday People newspaper and went on to sign a four-year modelling contract with The Sun. At the same time as being a Page 3 stunner she started singing and signed a deal with Jive Records. In 1986, her major hit Touch Me made her an international star.

She found herself touring the world and partying alongside major celebrities, from Brian May and Freddie Mercury to Bon Jovi and the Pet Shop Boys. She has gone on to sell more than 30m records.

“The first person to play Touch Me on British radio was DJ Simon Bates, who had a show on BBC Radio 1 at the time. After the track finished, he said, ‘I can’t believe this is Samantha Fox.’ And then he immediately played it again. A record signing that sticks in my mind was at the Allders department store in Basildon” she recalls “The entire shop was a throng of men, and two fights broke out in the crowd. All I could hear were voices shouting, ‘Samantha, Samantha, Sammeee, please over here… Whatta a little doll, give us a kiss… Shake my hand… Mine too, please…

Oh Christ, I’ve just touched her…’ followed by a female voice over the tannoy: ‘Calm down,

calm down. Samantha Fox will be here for an hour, and you’ll all get a signed picture’!

“Most things in my life really were hysterical around that point in time. The daily papers

wrote about me practically every day. The craziest story of all, published in The Sun, had to be the one about Chris Tiney, a 25 year old who lived with his wife, and she accepted that he had pictures of me all over the house.

According to the article, he had even taken down two pictures of his wife to replace them with pictures of me.

But when he tried to swap their wedding picture in their bedroom, she finally put her foot down.” In teenage magazines at this time, girls could vote on whether they would rather be Samantha Fox or Madonna. “I won every time,” she recalls.

Sam has had implants this year…….fed up with having to wear glasses since the age of 15, Sam who had amassed a collection of 50 pairs in varying styles, opted to undergo a £6,500 lens exchange operation. This had been prompted by one of her contact lenses breaking during a live performance in Finland, which saw her dramatically rushed to hospital.

Sam admits always struggling with contact lenses and she felt that glasses never provided the look she was after. Her operation has replaced her own natural lenses with new ones that now provide crystal clear vision, she says.

The restaurateur, who is a long standing supporter of The Clatterbridge Cancer Charity, placed a LEGO brick monkey figure on the giant structure, to represent the monkey logo of the Mowgli Street Food brand.

Mowgli have raised more than £88,000 for The Clatterbridge Cancer Charity through a scheme where customers at their Bold Street restaurant in Liverpool are given the opportunity to add a discretionary £1 to their bill as a donation.

Nisha said: “Charity is very much part of our ethos, and together with our customers we are very proud of the money raised for The Clatterbridge Cancer Charity and we are delighted to be part of this

project.

Katrina Bury, head of The Clatterbridge Cancer Charity, said: “Nisha and all the team at Mowgli Street Food in Bold Street, together with their customers, have raised an incredible amount of money to help transform cancer care for people in the region.

“What better way to celebrate this wonderful achievement than by having a permanent reminder of that support on our model for years to come.”

When complete, The Big LEGO Brick Hospital will be made up of more than half a million bricks and will be a scale replica of the new Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, currently being constructed in Liverpool city centre.

Each brick will cost a £1 donation, and the campaign aim is to raise £500,000 towards the construction of the specialist hospital and improvements to the Wirral site.

Merseycats help boy

An 11-year-old autistic boy, Nathan Lewis, was left extremely distressed when he lost his iPad whilst on holiday in Torquay recently as it helped keep him calm.

He put the iPad down on a seat and forgot to pick it up again.

When his family realised he didn’t have it with him they went back and searched everywhere for it and Nathan kept asking people “Have you seen my iPad?” – unfortunately it had gone.

When they returned home to Aintree they asked around for funding to replace it, even talking on Radio Merseyside and getting it in The Echo. Merseycats, the rock and roll children’s charity who are based at The Oldy Club at the Old Roan in Aintree, heard about it through friends of Nathan’s at The Holy Rosary club and got in touch with Nathan’s mother, Nicola, who told them that Nathan loved his iPad – it wasn’t just a toy to him but was also a very calming thing for him to use and helped him in social situations and with learning.

Nicola told us that her friends had started a crowdfunding page for him but we at Merseycats very quickly decided that we could replace the iPad for him.

Nicola told us the model that Nathan used so we could get him the same one, as Nathan would be happy and think we had got his back for him.

Merseycats bought the iPad and presented it to Nathan at one of their jam nights at The Oldy Club on Thursday 30th August, just one week after hearing about it.

Merseycats are always looking for people like Nathan to donate something to from the money they raise for sick and disadvantaged children in Merseyside so if anyone needs anything for a disadvantaged child on Merseyside, that the authorities can’t give them, then please get in touch with Merseycats at merseycats@ btinternet.com , or at The Oldy Club in Aintree any Thursday night or on Facebook, and if they can help then they will.

Dog of the month – Trigger TRIGGER is a dream dog – he is a five year old Lurcher and is lazy, snuggly, laid back and affectionate!

He is rather a sensitive soul and is looking for a quiet home with people who will give him an off lead blast every now and then, so he can have a good “zoomies” session.

He can be a little anxious in new situations but he forms such lovely bonds with people that he finds his reassurance with them.

Trig has spent a little while in a foster home and been absolutely no bother.

He is happy to walk with dogs who don’t want any interaction, and his foster carers said “if you want a low maintenance dog who simply likes being with you, then Trigger is ideal”.

He can live with children aged 10 and above, and he’s happy to be by himself for a couple of hours, as he’s such a couch potato!

If you think Trigger could be the four-legged friend you are looking for, you can visit Dogs Trust Merseyside on Whiston Lane, Huyton, Liverpool, L36 6HP. 2017-18 saw South Liverpool FC become West Cheshire League 1st Division champions for the third season in the last four but South have started the new season in mid-table position after the break-up of the title-winning squad.

Manager Martin Ryman has a rebuilding job on his hands with an influx of new players who have needed time to gel.

Successive defeats to Maghull and Mossley Hill Athletic, both title contenders, were harsh but no goals in either game tells its own story.

Previous successive home victories by 3-1 and 2-0 against Richmond Raith Rovers and Redgate Rovers respectively saw goals from new arrivals John Keatley, Danny Bulayima, James Fraser and Sharif Yusuf and a 3-2 away win at lowly Marshalls saw a hat-trick from new recruit Joel Douglas.

The reserve team has started well in the West Cheshire League 2nd Division; three successive victories by 5-2 against Maghull Reserves, 4-0 against Ashville Reserves and 2-0 against Mossley Hill Reserves saw the team reach the top of the table.

Croft’s mixed start

Stoneycroft 3 Old Xavs 2 STONEYCROFT marked their return to the LCFA Premier League with a win against a young and energetic Old Xavs side. The versatile Ben Williams was the first off the mark when he finished off a classy move with clinical efficiency after 15 minutes.

It was no surprise when Xavs drew level with a header from a corner. Soon after, Alex Kelly slotted home to restore the lead but sloppy defensive work again allowed the visitors to level the scoring just before the break. Two minutes into the second period the excellent Ben Williams was upended in the penalty area and Tom Stewart converted from the spot.

Stoneycroft 2 Botanic 2 MAIDEN Lane was the venue for Croft’s second fixture of the new campaign and they started like a house on fire and had already created a number of chances before going ahead in the eighth minute when skipper Tom Stewart headed home from a Luke Daley cross.

Five minutes into the second period some farcical defending allowed the visitors back into the game when they equalised through Jay Higgs.

Just when it seemed it was not going to be Croft’s day Josh Quarless popped up and headed in from a corner to restore the lead.

It looked like Croft had done enough to secure all three points before a Croft defender committed a needless injury time foul on the edge of the penalty area. Higgs gleefully took the resultant free kick and doubled his tally to earn his side a draw.

Pre-Season hots Up

AS the new season looms ever closer, Liverpool Sefton Hockey Club has been taking part in tournaments to make sure our players are match ready.

The Bill Chambers Tournament was held mid-August and reached a toasty 22°C. It was very well attended by members from all of the clubs’ eight teams.

Players were randomly entered into teams with other club members, so it was an excellent opportunity to do some socialising in-between games. The club is currently calculating the exact amount of profit, but funds raised on the day will go towards coaching equipment for team training sessions.

The start of September saw the W2s enter their usual pre-season tournament in Manchester, which reached 23°C. The team won their first two matches and drew their second two matches, pipping local rivals Prescot to a 3rd/4th playoff by securing a draw in the dying seconds of the final pool game. Facing up against a well organised Wilmslow team proved too much at the end of a long and hot day and we were well beaten for 3rd place.

That same weekend the W1s travelled up to another well-equipped site, as they paid a visit to Fylde who share their facilities with AFC Fylde of the Football National League.

As the mercury hit 24°C the girls played a triangular tournament, facing up against Didsbury Northern and the hosts. The first game against Didsbury took a while to get going and despite conceding in the second half things looked much sharper as the game went on. We headed straight into a game against the hosts and drew 1-1 in a really tough clash.

Despite some typical British protestations whilst playing in the warm weather, we’ll all miss it when we’re borderline hypothermic on a wet, frozen November afternoon!
