Befriending Service needs your support Do you have a spare hour or two to visit people who are lonely and isolated?

Would you like to support our charity and your community by being a Volunteer Befriender?

Volunteer Befrienders needed in Woolton, Gateacre and Hunts Cross Areas

WOOLTON Community Life provides a voluntary befriending service to the local community.

The charity was set up

by Dr George Kuruvilla of Woolton House Medical Centre as he became increasingly aware of a high level of elderly, lonely and socially isolated patients within the community, and how this is affecting their health and wellbeing. ese findin s are also supported by a wide breadth of associated

health professionals w o find low mood and ‘feeling depressed’ as a very common problem amongst the elderly patients who live alone.

The elderly in our community are particularly vulnerable to social isolation and loneliness due to loss of friends, family, mobility or income.

Social isolation adversely impacts not only on the individual quality of life and wellbeing but also on physical health.

Our charity utilises targeted intervention of befriending for the socially isolated in our community, using the Asset Based Community Development Model.

This model is supported by four General Practices within our local community who identify elderly patients who are lonely or socially isolated.

otential beneficiaries are evaluated by Dr George Kuruvilla using the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale, which includes physical assessment e.g. blood pressure recordings and current medications. All patients are re-evaluated ‘post intervention’ to measure the changes made by the befriending service.

Befriending Service Our volunteer befrienders undertake regular weekly visits to beneficiaries in their homes.

Befrienders provide a listening ear and friendship.

They offer encouragement and support to beneficiaries to become involved in community activities.

Having a befriender

also enables the beneficiary to attend our planned social events, go out shopping, walks to the local park, trips to garden centres and escorted visits to church.

Our charity continues to develop with the generosity of all our volunteers, donators, supporters and partners, all have given their valuable time and commitment to Woolton Community Life.

Our project is still in its infancy – but our early success mean that the demand for volunteer befrienders is growing.

We want to support more of our lonely and isolated people and need volunteer befrienders from our community.

Marjorie celebrates 100th birthday SOUTH Liverpool resident Mrs Marjorie Mallinson celebrated her 100th birthday recently.

Marjorie, who received the traditional special birthday wishes from The Queen, had a lovely day and is pictured celebrating with her family and the staff at Woolton Grange.

Marjorie was brought up in the Dingle area and went to school in Dingle Lane.

She moved to Aigburth after marrying her husband Tom who we understand was in the Royal Air Force.

Marjorie and Tom never had children but had a long and happy marriage until Tom passed away prior to Marjorie coming to Woolton Grange Care Home (High Street, Woolton Village) where she has been a resident since February 2012.

I’m sure that all South Liverpool LINK readers will join us in offering Marjorie our heartiest congratulations and best wishes.

Dog of the month – John

LOVELY John, a Staffordshire Bull Terrier arrived at Dogs Trust Merseyside, and carer Kim promptly fell head over heels in love with him!

She describes him as “a gentleman” who walks beautifully on his lead and is no bother to care for. He’s a very cuddly boy with a slight cheeky side that likes to run off with toys so that he can swap them for a titbit!

John, who is around nine years old, was found as a stray so the team don’t have any background information on him, but they are confident t at e as lived in a home. e would fit well into a

home with children aged 12 and over so he can be a full part of family life.

If you think John could be the four-legged friend you are looking for, you can visit Dogs Trust Merseyside on Whiston Lane, Huyton, Liverpool, L36 6HP.

Cat of the month – Garston Ebony and four new-born kittens THIS little girl was discovered taking shelter in an alley in Garston. She’d been there for months.

When we picked her up we got her checked over by the vet who said that she was about to give birth.

And so she did - within a couple of days.

Just got on with it, no fuss, nothing. I think she was just glad of a warm bed and regular meals to sustain her.

We’ve called her Garston Ebony.

She is such a friendly gentle cat. How she would have coped with tiny kittens living off scraps in an alley we have no idea.

So, we’re looking for homes for Mum Ebony and her kittens.

We’re not interested in your possessions, we just want to check that any animal we have rescued is going to a safe environment.

Kidsfest 2017 needs you WOULD you like to be part of something BIG and join The James Bulger Memorial Trust in making KidsFest 2017 the best family festival ever?

The James Bulger Memorial Trust (JBMT) invites community groups and volunteers to help them stage an amazing festival for families in Liverpool.

So, whether you’re a member of a dance school, sports club or community group, JBMT welcomes you to join them at the festival’s new home in Stanley Park.

KidsFest 2017 will take place in Stanley Park at the end of the summer holidays on Sunday 20th August and aims to give kids and families one last big adventure before school starts again in September.

The festival provides a great platform for organisations to showcase their services and talents.

Participating organisations are invited to come along and provide demonstrations and deliver workshops at the festival which has attracted

12,000 families to date.

Individuals are also welcome to come and get involved as there will be plenty of volunteering opportunities on the day.

The festival is organised

by JBMT in partnership with Orb Events. The Trust was set up in memory of James Bulger who was cruelly murdered in 1993 at the age of two. Its mission is to organise holidays and respite breaks for deserving children and their families.

Two years ago, they launched KidsFest – a free children’s festival – which was attended by 5,000 people in t e first year w ic rose to over 8,000 visitors last year. So, the organisers have lots of exciting plans up their sleeves to ensure it is even bigger and better for summer 2017, meaning more local families and children will be able to fun in the sun whilst supporting the James Bulger Memorial Trust.

The festival will be packed with entertainment, activities, workshops and attractions to create a

fantastic family-friendly event in the heart of North Liverpool. With fairground rides, bouncy castles, balloon sculptures, a zip wire, soft play area and full main stage programme of entertainment it simply doesn’t stop there!

James’ mother and patron of the charity, Denise Fergus, said: “I am immensely proud of the way that the people of Liverpool have taken this event to heart, we are so thankful to all the friends, supporters and organisations that have helped us to make it one of the largest free family focused events in the region.”

My First Dates appearance attracts a lot of attention ...

HI guys and welcome to June’s edition of Life’n’Style with Ainsy……so my episode of First Dates was shown on Tuesday 9 May and all I can say is OMG!!!

The amount of stories and press going around talking about my criteria list is CRAZY!!!! So if you haven’t seen the show and fancy an hour of humour check it out on Channel 4 catch-up!

I seem to have created a lot of attention for putting together this 22-point criteria list that the whole world seems to be talking about.

I made headlines in Spain, France, Italy, Germany and the USA – that’s as well as the national press and OK mag!! Hasn’t everybody got one of these lists??!!

Right, ok yes I get it - mine is a bit longer than most people but I have had quite a bit of time to put it together!!! It has been 4 years!!!

Don’t get me wrong I’m not complaining as my social media is smokin’ at the min with date requests! A Liverpool radio station are actually running a competition

to see if anyone fits my criteria and setting up a date for me so I’ll keep you posted on that next month!!

And they’re off...to Chester Races!

A GROUP of ‘girls’ from Bezzy Buddies recently had a great day out at Chester Races.

Lynne, founder of ‘Bezzies’, organised yet another smashing event for us.

Our starting point was The Old Stables (rather apt for a day at the races!), at Allerton Manor Golf Club, where we kicked off with a delicious breakfast and a lass of fi .

A quick photo outside in the sunshine and then we were off!

We then travelled by coach to Chester races where we had a great day and by golly the weather was with us. Needless to say there was plenty of cork-popping but after a couple I went on the G & T’s.

You can’t beat a nice gin and tonic on a gloriously sunny day in my view. Oh, and I had to pace myself for the long day ahead of

course!

A great day was had by all and we even managed to win a few bob……..and it really was just a few bob! Now although I have been to the races many times since I was a teenager I have never really had much interest in gambling and have always gone for the social side of it.

I decided to put one bet on the seven races (an accumulator, I think).

Anyway, I went to collect my meagre winnings and the bookie said ‘oh you’ve got six winners out of seven races.

You would have won a lot of money if you had chosen no. 4 instead of no. 5 in the sixth race’.

As I looked down, his till was bursting to the seams with £20 notes and he casually remarked ‘well, I certainly wouldn’t have been able to pay you out from this till’!

I asked him how much it might have been and he replied ‘well into 5 fi ures So that would have been at least £10k – pipped at the post but, never mind, as the old saying goes: ‘a miss is as good as a mile’!

And who needs to win a bet when you are in great company and having a great day in great weather?!

Before we knew it our coach was back to pick us up and return us to The Old Stables where we had a scrumptious three-course meal which was washed down with a nice bottle of wine.

So it’s a big thank you from all of us to Lynne at Bezzy Buddies – a really good day was had by us all!

THIS gourmet wild mushroom risotto recipe comes straight from the professional kitchen Freya and Chef Maynard at their gourmet cookery school in the heart of the Loire Valley which you can find at o earn o.com.

Risotto works as a nice starter but it is quite ric so keep t e portion small.

It can also be served as a main course, perhaps accompanied by a green salad to cut t rou t e ric ness.

What you’ll need (serves two): n onion – finely diced n cloves arlic – crus ed. n tbsp parmesan c eese – rated. n rborio rice. n 150g mixed wild mushrooms (or any variety you can et your ands on . n mascarpone c eese. n ml c icken stock. n tbsp butter. n salt and pepper to taste. n tsp olive oil.

Heat the butter and olive oil in a medium saucepan and gently sauté the onion and garlic until they are translucent

but not coloured.

Add the Arborio risotto rice and stir until the rice is coated with the oil & butter.

Carefully add the chicken stock using a ladle and stirring constantly with a wooden spoon.

As the rice absorbs the stock, keep adding more stock until the rice is just cooked and the risotto is nice and moist.

Test this by putting it on a plate – it should spread out nicely Meanwhile clean the mushrooms (avoid using water, just lightly brush to remove any dirt) and sauté in a frying pan with a little butter until just cooked.

Add the cooked mushrooms, Parmesan cheese and mascarpone and gently stir into the risotto.

Serve in a bowl garnished with Parmesan shavings and a light drizzle of olive oil.
