How to shop local and support local businesses this Christmas Christmas shopping is one of the festive season’s most timehonoured traditions. And, this year in particular, we’re being urged to think a little harder about the gifts we buy and where we buy them. Because while it’s considerably easier to shop with big companies, the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic means that we’re all being encouraged to shop locally.

Remember that if everyone in their local community spent just £5 extra per week with small businesses, it would help them to stay open in the long term.

Always leave a review

So we’ve pulled together some ideas for creative and meaningful ways you can support local businesses in the run-up to Christmas.

Shopping locally is much nicer than battling the Christmas crowds at a large shopping centre. So why not commit to using some of your Christmas spending power locally this year? There’s a small business owner near you that will (a) notice and (b) celebrate your support.

Spread it around

Before purchasing from a small business or visiting a restaurant, many of us turn to online reviews to see what others had to say about their experience. Leaving a positive review - even if it’s been a while since you visited or purchased - can help persuade others to become customers and could also help give staff and business owners a little morale boost at the same time.

When you’re out and about, try and prioritise local businesses over large brands where possible. For example, picking up your fruit and veg from a greengrocer instead of the supermarket will make a big difference to local sellers and suppliers.

Give vouchers and gift cards To help support some of your favourite local restaurants and watering holes, see if they’re offering gift vouchers and give friends and family a date night on you this Christmas.

Rather than giving Christmas hampers or fancy wines and cheese, give a gift card that gives people the opportunity to go and choose a selection of goodies for themselves from a local supplier. You could also be creating a new customer for life.

Whilst our team assist clients all over the country, we are proud to be based at our Allerton Office in South Liverpool. Over that time we have recovered millions of pounds in compensation for our clients, many of whom have been unable to continue working and required external support and adaptations to their homes as a consequence of failures in their medical care.

As well as failures within the sector we do also come across excellent medical care. In fact, very often when approached by clients who have concerns about medical treatment at private or NHS hospitals our initial advice is that they utilise the hospital’s own internal complaints procedure. Our experience is that it is often only a lack of communication which has led them to believe there has been a failure in their care resulting in a poor or unexpected outcome. Once they have raised their concerns and they have been properly answered, many clients are often reassured and can move on with their lives.

Sadly, we are however required to represent clients in cases where there is not a simple explanation or the explanation provided to them by the treatment provider is not acceptable.

Client X’s story One such case concerned a lady who underwent knee replacement surgery in order to improve her mobility. The treatment was funded by NHS but had been referred out to a private treatment centre. The surgery failed, as did restorative treatment and rather than improving her mobility, she was left wheelchair bound. Her family raised complaints with the surgeon and complained in writing but were reassured that the poor outcome was just one of those things and a risk of any surgery. We investigated and obtained independent expert evidence from an orthopaedic surgeon and discovered that a basic surgical mistake had been made in regards to the primary surgery. Had the correct technique been used the outcome would have been good and her mobility restored.

Instead the damage caused to the knee was irreversible and she had been left permanently wheelchair bound and totally reliant on the support of others. We put formal allegations to the Defendant Hospital and liability was quickly admitted in full. A settlement was negotiated including funds to allow our client to adapt her home and receive assistance from carers for the rest of her life.

Client Y’s story Another case concerned a young woman who developed cervical cancer. There had been some early signs and she had attended her GP and was referred for screening tests which were performed. She was reassured that these were all clear.

Cancer was later diagnosed by which time it was advanced and she had a 5cm tumour of the uterine cervix and required radiotherapy and chemotherapy and the treatment resulted in the premature onset of the menopause and consequent infertility. Owing to physical and psychological problems she was unable to return to work on a full-time basis. She complained about a delay in diagnosis but was reassured that the appropriate tests had been conducted. She was reassured that nothing more could have been done. We were instructed and investigated the case and as part of that investigation obtained evidence from an independent histopathologist. This evidence indicated that the early cervical smears had in fact been reported incorrectly by the Defendant Trust which was completely unacceptable. Had they been reported correctly as showing early signs of cancer, as they should have been, a simple procedure could have been performed avoiding all of the long-term consequences. We obtained admissions of liability and a substantial damages award which included compensation for her injuries, her loss of earnings and perhaps most importantly funds to allow her to pay for the future lifelong medical treatment that she would now require.

Making your heating system more efficient Rising energy prices, providers going bust, climate agreements at COP26 - the world’s energy consumption has been making headlines in a big way this year. There’s no doubt that it has got many of us thinking about how we can make our own individual changes that will not only make an impact on our environmental footprint but also our purse strings.

Our homes may be heated by a variety of different heating systems, powered by a range of fuel sources, but there are a number of common steps we can take to improve their efficiency.

Have the boiler serviced annually

Upgrade the controls Controls allow you to heat your home when it is occupied and only the parts of your house that are in use. New ‘smart’ controls enable you to adjust it via a mobile app. These systems can also actively monitor your home for movement, going into a lower temperature ‘sleep’ mode if it considers the property to be empty, or that the occupants are asleep in bed. Many also gain information from outside temperatures and weather forecasts, adjusting the heating accordingly.

Insulate your home

Regular maintenance ensures boilers work at their peak efficiency and should ensure they run effectively and safely for the year to come. It also helps extend the boiler’s life, reducing the risk of an expensive breakdown.

Adequately insulating your attic is essential, otherwise, your home will lose around a quarter of its heat through the roof space. Blocking up gaps around windows, doors and chimneys will also help save on energy bills and keep your home warm.

Replace an old boiler

Heat wisely

Although initially costly, if your boiler is reaching the end of its working life, replacing it with a more efficient model can save money on your heating bills in the long term. Modern boilers are highly efficient, and with the introduction of Boiler Plus building regulation, are becoming even more so.

It makes sense to turn the radiators down in rooms you are not using to save energy. If you want to heat only a couple of rooms in your home, it is far cheaper and safer to invest in thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) and use your central heating system.

A Remarkable Room He was one of many prosperous Victorian merchants who settled in substantial villas around Sefton Park.

Richard Lockett moved into a newly-built house called Enmore, Alexandra Drive, in 1878. He made a fortune in the South American nitrate trade.

Richard increasingly felt that his residence needed more to reflect his family roots going back to the 17th century.

In 1895, he built a remarkable, ornate dining room in an extension. Featuring wood panelling, an oriel window and stunning decorative plasterwork ceiling, it resembled part of an Elizabethan manor house.

This artist’s impression (with a view of the building’s exterior today) shows the room as it was when first built.

Coats of arms and elaborate carvings around the fireplace and portrait indicate Richard’s family pride. These features were removed at some later date and replaced by plain fixtures.

Enmore became Josephine Butler House in 1947.

The pioneering college honoured the leading Victorian social reformer.

However, its work was gradually overtaken by the development of social studies at universities and colleges.

When it closed in 1974, Josephine Butler House was the only institution of its kind in England.

Archdeacon Eric Corbett, chairman of the college’s executive committee, said at the time of closure: “The college has sent trained people all over the world … our emphasis will now be on the theological side.”

The building was sold and the proceeds used to provide religious training for social workers wishing to work within the church.

The unlisted building became a nursing home for many years before closing in 2016.

It built on the work of Liverpool-based Josephine (1828 - 1906) who promoted women’s education, opposed trafficking and worked tirelessly for the welfare and rehabilitation of prostitutes.

Now part of the Lark Lane Conservation Area, there are controversial plans to demolish the building and replace it with 72 flats in two new buildings.

Josephine Butler House, previously at Princes Avenue and Abercromby Square, was run by the Church of England.

Originally founded in 1920, the college trained church social workers helping with the problems of unmarried mothers, prostitution, adoption and family casework.

It is not known whether there are plans to incorporate the 1895 room into the new structure, destroy it or sell the contents as architectural salvage - the fate of many fine old buildings in the past.

Festive markets return to Liverpool From Friday 12 November to Thursday 23 December, around 40 stalls, festive rides and twinkly lights will transform St John’s Gardens, William Brown Street and the area around the North Entrance of St George’s Hall – in a slight change of location this year.

The market will be packed with a delicious range of food and drink, gift stalls and kids (big and small) can

enjoy Santa’s Village with its variety of festive rides including a big wheel and a giant Bavarian snow slide.

Opening times are Sunday to Wednesday 11am to 9pm and Thursday to Saturday 11am to 10pm. The markets will be accessible from lower and upper William Brown Street and via St Johns Lane.

Huge cultural cash injection for Liverpool’s waterfront Investments include £2 million to fund the initial development stage for The Pool, a transformative waterfront project, and £20 million Levelling Up funding for Tate Liverpool and National Museums Liverpool.

Plans for a new global visitor attraction, the redevelopment of two of Liverpool’s leading cultural institutions and a new public realm have been given a £22 million budget boost.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced two separate financial investments for the city which will inject a new lease of life in and around the city’s docks, and cement Liverpool’s ambition

to put culture at the heart of major regeneration projects.

As a result of the funding, improvements will be made to the public realm which will have a positive impact on health and wellbeing.

River of Light success shines bright Were you one of the thousands of people who visited River of Light?

Post-event figures show around a

whopping 150,000 people enjoyed the free, outdoor trail over 17 nights which boosted the local economy.

Each evening saw thousands of people take in the 12 large-scale, stunning illuminated artworks which spanned a 2km route. The popularity saw a boost in footfall in the city centre, with many restaurants and shops reporting high demand.

Following this year’s success, the Culture Liverpool Team has announced River of Light will return in 2022 for another 17 nights of beautiful, illuminated art from Friday 21 October until Sunday 6 November. The theme is being kept under wraps until next year but it will be a nod to the World Gymnastics Championships Liverpool 2022 which will be taking place in the city at the same time

The newly launched Penguin Parade will see young children go for a waddle of any distance at their nursery or primary school, to raise money and light up the festive season for local families affected by terminal illness. The cute fundraiser is fronted by Penelope the

Penguin, who will make an appearance in plush toy form at nurseries and schools taking part.

Liverpool sees the return of the world-famous Santa Dash Thought to be the UK’s biggest festive 5K fun run, The Appreciate Group Liverpool Santa Dash takes place on Sunday 5 December. It starts at 9.30am from Pier Head Liverpool on the city’s iconic waterfront and takes Santas through the Grade I Listed Royal Albert Dock Liverpool and city centre, before a grandstand finish outside Liverpool Town Hall featuring stilt walking festive characters and ‘real’ snow.

Anticipation and excitement are steadily mounting for the event return after it was staged virtually last year due to Covid-19 guidelines. More than 3,000 people have already registered to take part in 2021.

Dashing Santas are being encouraged to walk, jog or run to raise funds for Alder Hey Children’s Charity – the event’s official charity partner for 2021.

Five ways to keep your kids entertained at Christmas… that don’t involve a screen!

If you’re like most parents, you probably already worry that your kids have more ‘screen time’ than outdoor play, especially during the winter months. So as the festive season approaches and school holiday boredom looms, here are five festive-themed ideas for getting your kids outside, with activities that are a little bit educational but that also tap into the excitement and enjoyment of Christmas.

Go for a Christmas lights walk As nighttime draws near, get your little ones bundled up in warm clothing and take a walk around your neighbourhood looking out for all the neighbourhood Christmas lights and decorations. Point out the variety of lights, indoors and out. You can even make it a game of I-Spy by getting them to look out for specific colours or decorations (red lights, snowmen, reindeer, etc).

The Disappointment “I tell you they’re monsters ... real horrors,” said Joe, lifting his tankard for another swig of the local brew.

Jack looked in disbelief at the others in the tavern and shook his head: “That’s a fine way to talk about our mates.

We’ve known them for years.

“Take my word for it - a crowd can turn into a mob at the drop of a hat,” replied Joe. The two friends were well known in the village for their roguish reputations. If you wanted a pheasant or a salmon, they could provide them, no questions asked.

Both sat in silence for a while. “One minute they’re as nice as pie, the next ... well I’ve said it.”

It was a fine summer’s night a few days later. The pair had an order for a couple of rabbits and a pheasant so poaching was the name of the game.

They scanned the wood to see if no one was about. “Careful as you go - there are man-traps hereabouts,” said Jack.

They broke off a couple of small branches then trod carefully through the undergrowth, prodding the ground in front of them.

Joe used a catapult to bring down a pheasant and they set traps to catch the rabbits.

Then they were surprised by two burly gamekeepers who bundled them off to the village lockup.

The following morning, they were taken bleary-eyed to the manor court where the squire’s steward sentenced them to six hours in the stocks.

“I still think you’re wrong,” said his companion.

“Take old Sammy Wells,” Jack added nodding at a fat man in the corner. “I saw him the other day offering to help at the big house.

“Helped to clear out the stables when old Joss put his back out. Wanted nothing in return.”

Joe chuckled: “Only because he was hoping for a fine turkey at Christmas for his pains. They all have their motives.”

Joe warmed to his subject. “If it suits them, folk will turn nasty mark my words. Anyone in here would show their true colours if it came to the crunch.”

“Not us, of course,” said Jack.

“You said it,” came the reply, with more than a hint of irony.

Joe took another sip of beer then looked out through the window. “See the stocks over there? Even if the parson was sat in them, people would pelt him with rotten fruit ... or worse. I rest my case.”

Joe was full of foreboding. “There’ll be a mob from the Rose and Crown waiting for us - we’ll be lucky to escape alive,” he muttered, grim-faced.

Jack said nothing. They were soon in the stocks, sitting uncomfortably on the wooden plank.

They sat and sat and sat.

Some passers-by stopped and stared before going on their way. “I’ll have a salmon next time you’re by the river,” said one, chuckling.

Jack smiled but not Joe. What a disappointment: no one threw anything at them.

He’s an older lad at 10 years, and he’s better suited to living with children who are of high school age, rather than younger ones. Conker is house trained and fine to be left alone for a couple of hours once he has settled in.
