Gregory Abrams Davidson is to expand its real estate department after advising on property development transactions in excess of £105 million since Mark Alexander joined the firm 18 months ago.

The firm, which has a turnover of £4million and has offices in Liverpool and London, is now looking to add property experts in its commercial and residential departments.

Demand for services has been fuelled mainly in the Liverpool City Region, where the firm’s real estate team is advising social housing and private sector property development clients on residential developments that will see 956 units being brought to the market.

The team is also witnessing a marked increase in clients looking to occupy retail and leisure units. The most recent is On the Green, which is a 4,700 sq ft golf simulation concept at Grosvenor’s Liverpool One retail complex.

Mark Alexander, head of commercial real estate, commented on the division’s growth. He said: “For a brief period, the pandemic put a pause on activity in the marketplace, but Liverpool’s property market is certainly very buoyant, and we have a very active pipeline that stretches well into 2022.”

“Alongside Peel’s £5 billion Liverpool Waters development, Everton’s plans for its new £500 million stadium is not something we can lose, and it’ll help stimulate the recovery of Liverpool’s fantastic hospitality offering.

Both regeneration projects will help the City position itself internationally as providing attractive investment opportunities especially with Manchester possibly reaching saturation level.”

He concluded: “More recently, we have seen a marked increase in demand for clients looking to secure retail or leisure units. It’s pleasing to see, and it shows confidence is growing among retail and leisure operators now that we are seeing a gradual return of consumers back on the high street and in hospitality venues.”

Project Linus bringing smiles and comfort Project Linus is a wonderful group of volunteers that donate handmade quilts and knitted blankets to children (aged 0-18) locally who are having a difficult time. Among the places Project Linus visit are Alder Hey Hospital, Ronald McDonald House, the Homeless Families Unit and the neo-natal unit at the Liverpool Women’s Hospital. The items are all made by volunteers and provide the child with a hug they can keep.

I do hope you are all able to have a well-earned holiday this year - whether that be abroad or the now infamous “staycation”! I have to say that it is great to see so many people exploring the UK, we really do take for granted what we have on offer here. Stunning scenery, historic castles, and stately homes, not to mention indoor and outdoor attractions such as theme parks, museums and our beautiful coastline & seaside resorts.

Top Tips to a Healthy and Happy Retirement Retirement isn’t always something that people look forward to. It may be forced upon them through ill health or it may be because it isn’t everything it promised it would be. Many people feel that they have lost their identity.

Retired people are twice as likely to report feeling symptoms of depression than those who are still working. Research from the London-based Institute of Economic Affairs found that the likelihood that someone will suffer from clinical depression actually goes up by about 40% after retiring.

So how, when you stop your career, the one with goals, deadlines and motivation, can you make the most of the time you now have?

Take it slowly!

You don’t need to retire in one big bang! You could try retiring in stages by easing off over several years. Why not start by going part-time?

If your job didn’t involve travel - then now’s the time to fix that! There are plenty of opportunities to visit somewhere that you’ve always wanted to visit; painting holidays, walking, wine tasting, camping, city breaks.

Grandparents who can give and receive support from grandchildren are less likely to be depressed. If you have grandchildren, spending active playtime with them can help you stay healthier and it’s important for the children’s wellbeing as well.

There are proven emotional benefits bestowed by their unconditional love of us, and one study even found that dog owners need fewer doctor visits. Another study from Australia found that pet owners had lower cholesterol, lower blood pressure and a lower heart attack risk than people without pets; that could also be because it ensures that we get a walk every day too!

Summer healthcare for cats & dogs Should we be blessed with the sun this summer, you’ll want to keep your pet happy and itch-free by following these tips.

PESKY PARASITES Flea and tick prevention is important all year round, but during the summer these parasites undergo something of a population explosion. There are many products that help prevent tick or flea infestation but prevention is better than cure! It is vital that you keep up-to-date with your pet’s treatments so ask your vet to recommend the best product for your individual pet.

Ticks lurk in long grass and may be picked up by both dogs and cats (as well as humans!). They attach themselves firmly to your pet’s skin and look like black beads. It’s important to ensure that the insect is fully removed, so take your pet along to the veterinary surgery where a vet nurse can do this for you.

GRASS SEEDS Barbed seeds from the top of certain types of grasses can easily get caught in long ears, on coats and between toes.

Their sharp tips can easily penetrate soft skin and work their way in, resulting in a painful fissure. Check your dog after a walk and pull out any grass seeds from the coat before they can work their way under the skin.

HOT DOGS Heatstroke is a real risk for dogs. Unlike humans, dogs do not sweat (apart from a tiny amount from their paw pads) and rely on panting as part of their colling process.

Watch out for: ■■ Difficulty breathing/heavy panting ■■ Bright red gums and tongue ■■ Vomiting and/or thick viscous saliva ■■ Heatstroke is an emergency. Take the dog to a vet immediately.

To avoid heatstroke: ■■ Never leave a dog in a stationary car in hot weather.

■■ Avoid exercise during the hottest part of the day.

This is especially important for flat-faced breeds such as Bulldogs or Pugs.

■■ Always provide shade and fresh cool water.

■■ Take a bottle of water and a portable drinking bowl with you on walks.

TOP TIP: Give your dog a refreshing treat on a hot day – an ice cube. You could even put it in a treat toy.

Silver Screen Premiere The refurbished hall brought moving pictures to the community before the word cinema was even known.

In 1906, Aigburth Assembly Picturedrome - later the Rivoli - in Aigburth Road was the first Liverpool building to be converted into a cinema.

This was before Liverpool’s first purpose-built picture house - the Bedford in Walton - opened in 1908.

Aigburth Assembly Picturedrome was the brainchild of a local couple, Mr and Mrs A Scott, who obtained a licence to show animated pictures.

It was just 11 years since the Lumière brothers invented films projected onto screens and seven years before Hollywood started production.

The new medium thrilled audiences, astonished at the realism and special effects of the movies. Early films such as A Trip to the Moon (1902) and The Great Train Robbery (1903) helped create the demand for cinemas.

The cinema was a big hit although the facilities were basic with seating consisting of long, uncomfortable wooden forms.

At first, only the top floor was used, seating about 350 people. Programmes were changed on Mondays and Thursdays and there was a minors’ matinee on Saturday afternoons.

Later the cinema was expanded to include stalls and balcony, housing a total of 600 people.

Many films of varying quality were being made commercially and venues opened to meet the need.

Renamed the Rivoli in 1921, it doubled as a theatre for a time, hosting variety shows and concert parties.

The word cinema was not recorded until 1909 - it did not appear in the Oxford English Dictionary until 1914. A variant of the word is kinema.

Comedians Arthur Askey and Tommy Handley were among those who trod the boards.

The Aigburth Assembly Picturedrome started life as the Sefton Park Assembly Rooms.

Now used as a church, the building (pictured) bears a date stone for 1889 (inset) recording when it was opened.

It lasted in its original role for about a decade before the Scotts acquired it for live acts and locals dubbed it Pa Scott’s Opera House.

It was also briefly the home of a repertory company, staging a new play every week.

The Rivoli became a part of the Gaumont circuit in 1928.

Despite competition from nearby cinemas including the Mayfair, the Rivoli lasted until 1957 when it was among the first cinemas to close.

Final Public Consultation Launches on Local Plan Liverpool launched a six-week public consultation on 9th July to invite people and businesses to have their final say on the city’s 15-year Local Plan.

Liverpool’s Local Plan sets out how the city would meet the challenges of a predicted population rise of 47,000 people, by creating 35,000 new homes and developing 370 acres of land for 38,000 new jobs.

After delays due to Covid, an inspector conducted their hearings in October 2020, to test the “soundness” of the plan, at which a series of proposed Main Modifications were identified.

The public are now being asked for their final feedback on these proposed changes. People can read or download the Combined Schedule of Main Modifications and provide feedback

Covid-19 testing pilot cut virus cases & spread by academics has found it led to a reduction of more than a fifth in Covid-19 cases.

Last November, the city became the first in the world to have a voluntary mass testing programme for people without coronavirus symptoms.

An evaluation of Liverpool’s pioneering SMART community testing pilot

Now, a study by the University of Liverpool and the DHSC has concluded

that community testing led to an 18% increase in case detection and a 21% reduction in cases compared with other areas up to mid-December, after which the Kent variant surge made it difficult to compare areas.

During the evaluation period (6 November 2020 to 30 April 2021), 283,338 (57%) Liverpool residents took a test using a lateral flow device (LFT).

KJT brings new festival to Wavertree Katarina Johnson-Thompson, or KJT as she is more fondly known, in partnership with Summus Sports Group and Project 30, has launched Festathlon, a new, innovative and all female athletics festival taking place at her home track on Saturday September 11th, 2021.

As well as bringing KJT back to Liverpool to compete for the first time since 2014, the event aims to help

reignite athletics and inspire the next generation of female athletes.

The festival will be a combination of KJT’s favourite things; athletics, music, and the City of Liverpool. Athletics will be brought to life in a new way through an innovative heptathlon team format that will celebrate the traditions of the sport whilst offering up something new for lifelong fans and first-time watchers alike.

One Stop Shop service books place in nine city libraries Nine Liverpool’s libraries are set to deliver a new-look One Stop Shop service. As part of the council’s budget proposals for 2021/22, major cuts

had been planned, leaving just 18 staff working from four pop-up venues rather than eight fixed sites.

Now, following public consultation and discussions with trade unions, councillors and staff, a revised scheme has been approved which more than doubles the number of locations where face-to-face council services are available and maintains staffing numbers and secures jobs.

Two sites will operate full time (Toxteth and Spellow), and the other seven open either two or three days per week (Central, Old Swan, Kensington, Norris Green, Lee Valley, Speke, Garston).

The opening of the sites will be phased and will start later this summer, dependent on government advice on the lifting of Covid restrictions.

Strange Tales

Up, Up and Away For some people, it was cars, for others boats but for Michael, it was planes - built with his own hands to his own specifications.

To be precise it was one plane - or flying machine as older people called it - and it was constructed at home.

Veronica was sceptical at first. After all, it was only 10 years since the Wright brothers made the first powered flight.

The couple had recently become engaged. On the day Michael bought a beautiful engagement ring, he had shown Veronica the plans.

They studied the blueprints in the conservatory of his parents’ Allerton home.

“Surely this is too tiny and fragile to fly?” queried Veronica.

“That’s a plus,” replied Michael.

“It is light enough to manoeuvre into place for the best take off. Most aeroplanes need a long run to get airborne this will need the minimum of ground.”

The machine was soon taking shape in the workshop next to the conservatory. The basic fuselage was soon joined by the wings.

Michael was proud of the engine he had built to high specifications. “It needs a powerful thrust to take off,” he explained.

The propellor was the last to be fitted and he was ready for a test run. The flight lasted about five minutes, circling the church before landing in Calderstones Park.

A noisy crowd gathered so he took off and returned home, landing in the spacious garden.

More flights followed, described by Michael with relish.

Once he swooped over Speke Hall, startling Miss Watt as she took her constitutional.

He crossed the Mersey and landed at Bebington. He was among the pioneers, free from regulations and restrictions.

It was a beautiful sunny day, not a cloud in the sky or a breath of wind.

“Let’s go to Southport,” said Michael.

Veronica was nervous. She had only flown once, on one of the test flights, and it left her feeling queasy.

Soon they were cruising above the rooftops. They could see people far below looking and pointing.

Veronica clung to Michael’s waist.

Soon they were in open country, following the railway line. Elegant Lord Street, with its crowds of visitors, came into view.

Michael swooped and rose over familiar landmarks such as the town hall and art gallery.

They headed for the beach, making a perfect landing by the fairground.

The plane attracted a crowd including a group of boys.

Michael and Veronica were talking to a couple they knew when the plane’s engine roared.

Off it went along the sands with two boys on board. It bounced about but failed to take off before stuttering to a halt after 300 yards.

“I’m not paying half a crown - we didn’t take off,” said one of the boys and walked off in a huff.

Michael was indulgent. “You’ll make a pilot one day,” he told the other boy.

Michael and Veronica laughed all the way home.

Hey guys! Welcome to my August / September issue of Life ‘n’ Style Well, what an eventful couple of months I have had. If you know me, you will know I am absolutely obsessed with my 2 chihuahuas, Dolly and Fendi. The only problem I have is that Dolly keeps having phantom pregnancies so as you can imagine I have had my vet, Panos, up the wall. He has advised me to either get her spayed or mate her. I’m not really good with any type of operation so I thought I’ll go with the option of growing our little chihuahua family.

Well, I’ll be honest, I didn’t know how difficult it would be.

I just presumed you put a female and male together and the jobs done. Oh no, it’s definitely not an easy task let me tell you! It was Dolly’s 4th birthday and it just so happened to fall on one of the days they are meant to do the business so I thought what better way to celebrate than for her to have a little day with her soon-to-be boyfriend. Dolly decided to be a little diva and didn’t take part one bit so I’m back to square one now!

Talking of celebrations, we celebrated my gorgeous mum’s 60th birthday last week and what a fabulous day it was. We had a DJ on in the back garden, Chinese caterers in and a cocktail waiter with all our family and special friends and what a wonderful day we had. It was just perfect!

On the day, I wore a lovely jumpsuit from Glamify (glamifyfashion.com) called Milan. I teamed it with a headscarf from another outfit on their site called Rivieria. Both outfits are priced under £30 and the quality and fit are always really good. It’s definitely my go-to site at the moment for little fashionable pieces.

I also celebrated one of my close friend Paul Knowles’ birthday. We spent the night at Gino’s and I wore this Nude Snake Print Cross Bust Underwired Flare Jumpsuit from PLT (prettylittlething.com), which has now been reduced to £14.

What an absolute bargain! It also comes in solid colours, white and black.

Transform household & garden waste and save the planet Composting is one of the greenest things you can do for our planet. Some scientists even argue it is more important than recycling!

It is also the most natural thing - nature composts all its own leaves and debris, just look at the floor of any woodland. The leaves break down on the floor under the trees, releasing nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and many trace elements to help plants grow.

So it may help our garden grow but how does that help the planet?

Well, if a ton of vegetable matter is composted, rather than sent to landfill, this will reduce greenhouse gas emissions as much as taking one car off the road for two months.

■■ L ayer the contents like a huge sandwich, alternate moist and dry. Sandwich grass cuttings between plain cardboard, loo roll inners, egg cartons to avoid a soggy pile.

■■ D O NOT add meat, fish, cooked food, coal ash, nappies, cat or dog litter.

■■ D O ADD uncooked fruit and vegetable peelings, grass cuttings, plain cardboard, coffee filters, non-plastic tea bags, soft green prunings, leaves and chopped up smaller branches.

■■ Water heap to keep it moist NOT wet.

■■ Cover with a piece of plastic or an old bit of carpet.

Almost two-thirds of landfill waste is biodegradable.

■■ When crumbly and dark it is ready to use.

If we do not compost and send our waste to landfill, as the vegetable matter decays, it produces methane gas due to the lack of air in that environment. Methane gas is 21 times more potent a greenhouse gas than Carbon Dioxide.

So, composting helps to minimize landfill’s damaging contribution to Climate Change.

Want it faster?

But all the guides on composting look so complicated!

Just remember that Mother Nature manages to compost everything available with absolutely NO fuss, no research, and no complicated guides.

For a simple compost heap, (known as a cold compost): ■■ Find a 3-foot square area, hidden by shrubs if you prefer.

■■ Y ou can enclose it with chicken wire/ similar, but not essential.

■■ F irst lay a couple of inches of twigs or straw to allow air in, place on the bare earth, so the worms can climb up from the soil.

If you want a faster compost, try to turn it often, the more you turn it, the faster it will decompose (more air for the microbes). There are also easy construct wood compost units.

So have a go! You will know you are helping the planet, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, providing excellent feed, more microorganisms and worms to promote growth in your plants and improve the water retention of your soil.

Gandalf will happily walk with other quiet dogs but isn’t interested enough to want to live with one, he’d be happiest as the only dog at home. He is house-trained and can be left alone for a few hours, but prefers company.

Gandalf can live with children of late teenage, as he’s looking for a quiet life at his age.
