Dear Ian, My mother is approaching her 85th birthday. Whilst she is of sound mind and mentally capable I have noticed that she is becoming increasingly frail and this has made me worry about her. We don’t know what the future will hold and I have seen several of my friends’ parents succumbing to dementia and sadly they were not able to plan ahead whilst they had the chance. I think it is time to set up a Lasting Power of Attorney, although I am rather anxious about bringing up the subject. I am looking for some guidance on this. How do you work out which child or sibling would become the attorney? Is it worth using a solicitor? Should we do it ourselves? It seems like a complicated area and I would appreciate some expert advice. LJ, Woolton, Liverpool
Dear LJ, You are correct. This can be a complicated area and one that is very difficult to discuss with family members. The growing awareness of dementia has seen an increasing understanding by the general public of the need for a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) allowing you to appoint one or more attorneys to make important decisions on your behalf if and when capacity is lost. There are two types of LPA - a Financial LPA – giving the attorney power to deal with your property and financial affairs and a Health LPA – giving the attorney powers in respect of your current and future welfare and medical treatment. The forms are standardised and cannot be deviated from. It is also designed with ‘tick’ boxes. However, despite their apparent ‘simplicity’ a number of drafting errors can result in unlawful additions you have made being struck out by the Court upon registration of the LPA or even worse, the LPA being completely rejected by the Court. Part 3 of the LPA form is creating constant problems – this allows you to choose from 3 options in the event that you have appointed 2 or more attorneys. The attorneys must act either Jointly or they can act independently of each other (Jointly and Severally) or a mix of the two with them acting Jointly for some decisions and Jointly and Severally for other decisions.
Practical day to day problems can arise with a Joint appointment. If an attorney is away on holiday, the remaining attorney cannot act. If an attorney dies, the remaining attorney(s) cannot continue to act – i.e the Power ends unless replacement attorneys have been appointed. Likewise, choosing jointly for some matters and jointly and severally for others has both the aforementioned problems, but also the added difficulty of deciding which decisions fall within which of the options. Moreover, the Court is receiving a growing quantity of powers that attempt to allow one attorney to act in all matters independently with the remaining attorneys acting Jointly at all times. The Court is adamant that only 1 of the 3 specific options listed above under the ‘tick box’ regime can be chosen from Part 3 and any attempt to deviate from these or any modification to them will be rejected outright. In the vast majority of cases, Gregory Abrams Davidson Solicitors would recommend “Jointly and Severally” as the appropriate choice for a donor (the second of the three options discussed above). As ever, an apparent saving of legal fees by not having used a solicitor will have turned out to have been a false economy. Furthermore, instructing a law firm who are experienced in these matters will give you assurance that someone outside of the family knows who you have appointed as your attorney and can also avoid disputes that you were of sound mind at the time of doing so. We would caution you from being beguiled into thinking that the simplicity of a ‘tick-box’ means that the decision is simple and straight forward. Far from it!

local history Victorian Historian Sir James Picton was a leading 19th century architect and arguably the greatest historian to chronicle the history of Liverpool. He researched and wrote in great depth about the port and its neighbouring communities such as Wavertree where he lived and left his mark. Picton designed and built Sandyknowe, in Mill Lane, as his residence in 1848. He chose the highest point – 215 feet above sea level - on Olive Mount. The bewhiskered author is pictured with a photo of Sandyknowe taken in 1972 shortly before it was refurbished.

One of the attractions of Memorials of Liverpool is its detail and wry humour, contrasting with history books that can be short on facts and insights. Picton knew his subject and was not afraid to express robust opinions. Two examples from the 1875 edition: “We have now arrived at Wavertree Road, at present a somewhat unsightly entrance into Liverpool from the east, flanked with shops and dwellings of an inferior class. “Down to 1830 this road was a beautiful avenue lined with tall trees on each side, whose umbrageous foliage meeting overhead imparted a grand and solemn character to the vista. “The construction of the railway crossing the road at first on the level and the subsequent construction of the bridge with its long approaches made the first inroad. “The gradual appropriation of the land for building has done the rest.” And: “Wavertree Park, which has proved an inestimable boon as a recreation ground for the people, owes its existence almost to an accident.
It was here that Picton wrote his best-seller Memorials of Liverpool. The book sold out in a few months, resulting in a second edition running to more than 1,100 pages. It remains his greatest legacy along with Picton Library named after him. Picton’s most famous surviving structure is the clock tower still dominating Wavertree Village. He designed it as a memorial to his wife Sarah Pooley who died in 1879 after 50 years of happy marriage.

Flognarde aux Poires
This delightful dessert is an authentic french recipe, straight from a local’s kitchen (Marie’s to be exact!). you are probably wondering what it is as it’s not one of the more common french desserts. or maybe you have - if so, très bien! flognarde aux poires is like a clafoutis but made with pears instead of cherries. A clafoutis is a french dessert - a mixture made up of fruit, traditionally cherries, and a thick flan-like batter arranged in a buttered dish and baked. But don’t let these hard to pronounce words fool you. This dessert is easypeasy and an absolute joy to eat!
Ingredients
Directions
■ 100g flour
Mix flour, sugar, eggs then the milk till mixture is smooth.
■ 70g sugar
Once the mixture is smooth, add the pears.
■ 5 or 6 eggs (according to size) ■ 300ml of milk
Pour everything into a buttered dish (it’s very important to do this!). Dot with knobs of butter and sprinkle some vanilla flavoured sugar.
■ 1 tablespoon of oil
Cook for 50-60 minutes at 200C (Gas 7).
■ 6 ripe peeled pears cut up thickly (or tinned at a push, especially if out of season)
Serving suggestion Serve warm (but also delicious when cooled) with a generous ball of vanilla ice cream.

Travel Trends for 2021 As 2020 draws to a close, many of us will be looking back and thinking about holidays that never were. Some might even be thinking about the way we travel and how that will now fit in with the world around us. There’s no doubt that in 2021, travel is going to look very different. Trends are starting to emerge that show how we may want to be travelling in the coming months and years. Things like travelling more off the beaten track – away from large crowds. Spending time and making memories with our loved ones in more private settings. And showing more support to independent businesses and local communities. As the light slowly starts to emerge at the end of that tunnel, let’s have a look at the future of travel.

Travel restrictions for more exotic destinations still have a huge question mark hanging over them and when they will start to ease, only time will tell. Until then, we may see national restrictions easing so travellers will probably go with the safer option of travelling closer to home, rather than a gamble on a trip abroad.

While the idea of booking a trip and digging out your suitcase might seem a little out of reach at the moment, the travel industry feel that we should start to see the world move again in the late spring. *fingers & toes crossed* And when it does, there is hope and optimism that we will all carry with us respect, consideration and a whole lot of appreciation not just for each other but most of all for the wonderful world we live in.
And lots to be excited about - fantastic national parks like the Lakes and Peak District, city breaks to vibrant cities like Newcastle (loved it - highly recommend) and Bristol (on the list), quirky accommodation off the beaten track in the form of yurts and treehouses. Hi guys and welcome to my first issue of Life ‘N’ Style 2021! I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and I would like to wish you all the very best for the New Year. Since I wrote my last piece our little family has grown! We decided to add to ‘The Ainsy’ household and get a friend for our little Dolly. So we welcomed another long-haired Chunhui that we have called Fendi. She is nothing at all like Dolly, who’s a nervous wreck and scared of literally everything. Fendi is fearless and FULL of personality. I’d forgotten what it was like to have a puppy. I feel like I have a newborn baby again - I sit for hours just watching her! It’s been really nice and we have been making some gorgeous memories together. I definitely have a dog obsession though. I have been thinking that maybe one day I’d like to breed them. I might put it out to the universe... My problem would be that I would never be able to part with them so would end up with a house full of little chi-chis!

They have the most unreal faux fur coats you can imagine and in so many gorgeous colours. I went for the Naomi Five Ring in beige and every time I wear it I get soooooo many compliments. As a little treat before Christmas, a lovely friend of mine, Megan, took me to London. We tried a few new restaurants but my favourite was Amazonico in Mayfair, which was lovely. Guessing Games Lana liked to tease with her mischievous sense of humour filling all aspects of her life which family and friends accepted and enjoyed. There was nothing malicious in her pranks and games. All – or nearly all – saw it as part of her charm, even Ollie. Oliver Bradstock was her long-suffering husband. They met at university and set up an advertising company in a small rented office. It soon expanded into a successful operation employing a dozen people producing all types of promotional material. Lana’s teasing, often odd, sense of humour helped with the business. She was good at slogans – rodent controllers Scamper & Hyde got a lot of business with We Smell a Rat! Not everyone shared her sense of humour. For example, undertakers Rigg & Mortis rejected We Beat All Stiff Competition. Lana’s office often fizzed with laughter as the ideas flew around. She organised sessions called Guessing Games. Clients were asked to submit artworks from company files. Lana held these up at random for the team to shout out ideas – it quickly produced results. One day in late summer Ollie was alone in the office. Several staff were on holiday while others were on the road on various projects. The large office overlooked a rather untidy yard. Ollie was staring into space when, without warning, two soft hands covered his eyes. “Guess who?” said a teasing, vaguely familiar, voice. The hands withdraw and he looked around. “I’m Madge and I think we could go places honey,” she said in a broad American accent.

Ollie burst out laughing as the woman turned and walked out the office. “That was a brilliant stunt you pulled today,” he told Lana later. “I loved the red hair and heavy makeup – I hardly recognised you.” “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” said Lana, for once not seeing the joke. It resulted in a row. “To think I could do such a thing,” she protested with a scowl. A few weeks later Ollie was on a train heading for London. He was gently nodding off when two soft hands covered his eyes. He turned around: “I’m Madge and I think we could go places honey,” said the now familiar voice. This time she winked theatrically before disappearing. Puzzled, Ollie decided not to tell Lana. He didn’t want another row. He spent a busy day in London, walking between several offices around Westminster and Trafalgar Square. Once he thought he saw a familiar redhead. Ollie caught the last train and spent an uneventful journey home. He couldn’t believe his eyes when he arrived at Lime Street Station. There was a huge poster next to the clock. A red-headed woman in thick makeup was smiling out above the slogan: “I’m Madge and I think we could go places, honey.” A woman rushed down the platform to greet him, pulled off her red wig and hugged him. “Happy anniversary darling – surprise! surprise!” said Lana. read my next Strange Tale in the Link: The Straight and Narrow.

Some Rosey Favourites Rosé wines have always been a very popular choice for drinking during summer months. But, I now find that ‘pink’ wines are a regular choice, for many, throughout the year. Today, these wines are produced by a good number of countries, globally, satisfying wine lovers (and demand), worldwide. The rose colour adds ‘something’ to a dining table, including al fresco dining. Events and numerous occasions are enhanced by these elegant, colourful wines, in varying shades. They also make splendid pre-dining drinks, as well as being perfect accompaniments to a lot of cuisines, such as seafood and pasta dishes. canti extra Dry is a very popular choice for many (Italy, 11% vol). I found this Vino Spumante production to have a good, enticing bouquet of fruits and a fresh mouthfeel, with a very pleasant flavour. The persistent perlage adds to the experience, splendidly. Other popular ‘sparklers’, with a lower and alcohol-free content, include extra Special pink Muscat. Grape juice concentrate is blended with sparkling water to produce this refreshing beverage. freixenet Alcohol-free Sparkling (Spain) is a further production that pleases many, with its light and fruity flavour. extra Special pinot Grigio is a rosé from Italy (12% vol). This wine has a very pale pink colour, which attracts to the elegant experience for the mouth’s pleasures and on to the palate’s enjoyment.
Staying with Italian productions, canti pinot Grigio delle Venezie (12% vol) has many devotees. Again, regularly selected by numerous ‘pink’ lovers, this wine certainly does not disappoint. Over in the France section, two that ‘caught my eye’ were Vin de provence (13% vol) and prophecy (12.5% vol). I found the former, with its delicate pink salmon colour, to be refreshingly dry and elegant and the latter, which also has good flavours of red fruits, to follow the nasal senses, wonderfully. Last, (but not least) rose les estivales (France, 12% vol) is my personal selection. Refreshing with a pleasant floral bouquet, leading to the fruit flavours, right through to the palate’s sensation and enjoyment. I located these wines at an Asda store, where I found great value on their extensive drinks sections, which include award-winning productions. As always, enjoy!

Work begins on city’s first purpose-built film studios In December, work began on Liverpool’s first purpose-built film and high-end TV stages. Contractors for Liverpool City Council broke ground on land adjacent to the famous Littlewoods Building, off Edge Lane, to create two 20,000 sq ft sound studios. The studios, which received planning permission early December, are seen as critical to Liverpool’s strategy to cement its reputation as one of Europe’s premier film and TV production hubs. The city council has appointed contractor Morgan Sindall
Construction to build the facilities, which are ideally located being just a 10-minute drive from the city centre and the M62.
It is expected that the sound stages, which have received funding from the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, will be operational by Spring 2021.
Liverpool continues to make a scene in the film and TV industry In a report looking back at a unique year for Liverpool Film Office, latest figures show that despite effectively being shut down for six months, the city region has still hosted 212 productions, supported 490 jobs and boosted the local economy by nearly £13.5 million. Despite the Covid-19 pandemic bringing the film and TV sector to a standstill, Liverpool still proved a screen hit in 2020.
Productions that did head to the city region - when it was safe to do so were high calibre and high value.
These included The Batman (Warner Bros), The Irregulars (Netflix), Time (BBC), So Awkward (CBBC), Munich 38 (Netflix), Moving On Series 12 (BBC). And the productions are also being hailed as providing an essential lifeline to Liverpool’s hospitality industry with more than £2.1 million invested in the sector as a result of productions booking around 25,000 room nights.
New visitor attraction for Liverpool gem Liverpool’s St George’s Hall has taken a step closer to opening a brand new visitor attraction in 2021 thanks to a £250,000 boost. The funding, part of the government’s Culture Recovery Fund, will be invested in a high-tech digital visitor experience, which will enable people to step back in time and see what life would have
been like in the cells and courts of the 19th and 20th centuries. The ambition is for the educational and informative project to combine 3D, augmented reality, artificial intelligence and virtual reality, in a first for the Grade I-listed building. St George’s Hall was one of 77 organisations to receive a grant which
was allocated by the National Heritage Fund and Historic England on behalf of the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport.

South Hit The Top... Again As local football returned from the November lockdown, South Liverpool FC’s senior teams (all eight of them!) have had successful returns through December although only eleven games have been played as the weather has been particularly unkind to our four veterans teams who all play on grass! In the one week available in January before our third lockdown only three of our teams were able to play. Of course, discussion is now starting about whether the season can be finished and whether it is going to be possible for the first team to get promoted to the North West Counties League. The first team had a very difficult schedule by playing the only two other unbeaten teams in the first division of the West Cheshire League. However, South won them both, 2-0 at Mossley Hill with goals from Stuart Cornfoot and Brad Williams and 2-1 at Mersey Royal with two more goals from Williams. The latter has been in terrific scoring form and notched an amazing seven goals in a 9-1 demolition of Redgate Rovers with two more for centre forward, Cameron Dalton. The 100% record in December has put the team back on the top of the league with a three-point cushion as we fall into lockdown again. The reserves, playing in the second division of the West Cheshire League, had their first win since September with a 4-2 win over lowly Neston Nomads with another hat-trick for veteran striker Curtis Cummins. The win moved the team into mid-table and their excellent 1-0 win over one of the promotion candidates, Heswall, consolidated that position. The goal was scored by substitute Alex Bishop who at 41 years is one of the club’s oldest ever scorers.
Alex plays regularly for our veterans teams but last scored an open-age goal for the club 10 years ago! The third team had a spectacular December, playing two home games and scoring an amazing 17 goals into the bargain. A 6-1 win over lowly Mexoc was trumped by an 11-1 crushing of mid-table Alumni Reserves with five goals for Mike Thomas and three for Joe Ferguson. Since new year the team were narrowly beaten 2-1 by one of their main rivals for the title, Netherley Athletic. The club’s youth team have remained top of the youth division of the West Cheshire League after a 3-3 draw at unbeaten Maghull and a 4-1 home win over lowly Netherley Wood Lane Legion under the Friday evening lights at the Jericho Lane sports complex. Since New Year they have played once, losing 6-4 against one of their main rivals,
Mossley Hill, after holding a 4-2 lead with 10 minutes to go. Two of our veterans teams have not played a game due to a combination of Covid and the bad weather. However, our Saturday first team, who play in the I-Zingari Combination Over 40s first division, have won their only game by 3-0 at lowly Waterloo Grammar School Old Boys. Leading goalscorer Alex Bishop scored another hat-trick to retain the team’s position at the top of the league. Our Sunday veterans first team advanced to the second round of the league cup by crushing Earlestown Athletic 8-1 with another hat-trick for Curtis Cummins. The latest lockdown makes the future of football at local level extremely uncertain but all our players are ready to go when we get the all-clear. by Jim Stanway
