Childwall joins National Heritage Weekend scheme All Saints Childwall is participating in the National Heritage Weekend scheme again this year and will be open to visitors on Saturday 17th (10.00am-4pm) and Sunday 18th (2pm-4pm) September. While there will be no guided tours of the church this year, visitors will have access to a rolling video presentation and stewards will be on duty throughout the weekend. Learn all about the church’s fascinating historic features and enjoy organ recitals on the Wills Organ on both Saturday and Sunday. The tower will also be open and, subject to weather conditions, it will be possible to access the open parapet. Disabled access to the church can be found through the Priest’s Door located to the east of the main entrance. Unfortunately, there is no disabled access to the tower and the churchyard should only be accessed with care due to uneven paths. Business Breakfast Meetup Looking to grow your business? Want to meet like-minded business owners? Or maybe you work from home and fancy adding some face-to-face networking to your schedule. A new monthly meetup in Liverpool city centre hopes to achieve just that. Created by local business owner, Bob Coyne, his vegan business breakfasts have been getting together for a few months now to swap contacts and exchange ideas. We caught up with Bob to find out more. What is the idea behind the vegan business meetup? I attended a well-known breakfast meeting a few years back and I wanted to create the opposite of that. The idea here is to have somewhere that is free, informal, more relaxed and doesn’t serve the traditional English fry-up. How does the meeting work? We turn up, we chat and we eat. There’s no pressure to pass work between each other. We exchange business cards, tell each other what we do and just get the word out
No, not at all, everyone is welcome. Obviously, you’ll be eating vegan food but give it a try, you might like it. Where and when do you meet? Vibe Cafe on Paradise Street. I’m a Graphic Designer/Web Developer and we’ve had Psychologists, Photographers, Furniture Removers, and more. Word of mouth is a great way to grow your business. Where do I sign up? Strange Tales Grandma and Grandpa were devoted to their only grandchild Phil, an orphan since his parents died in a shipwreck when he was just five years old. They all lived in a pretty cottage overlooking the Mersey estuary, the views out to sea giving a sense of comfort for their loss. Phil loved to wander along the beach looking at the ships. “I want to go to sea,” he would tell his loving grandparents on many occasions as he grew up. “I want to see strange lands and unusual places.” “We hope you do,” said Grandma, “but that you will always come back here. We love you very much and would hate to lose you.” “There is nowhere more strange and unusual than Liverpool,” joked Grandpa. In time Phil trained in the merchant navy and set off on his travels. He joined a wellknown shipping line, first on sailing ships then moving on to steamers. Grandma and Grandpa were delighted and comforted by his letters home, envelopes bearing unusual stamps and postmarks from far-off lands. Phil’s visits home were few and far between - he was sometimes away for up to two years. His photograph was taken at a studio in Bold Street, then framed. The old couple hung it proudly on the wall of their snug parlour. Suddenly the letters stopped. “We’re worried,” Grandma told Mrs Jeffries over the garden wall. “It’s been nearly a year now since we heard anything.” The shipowners confirmed that Phil had signed off from his last berth on the Southern Star after reaching Fiji. A shipmate told them that Phil had decided to go exploring the islands.

Three more months went by. Grandma and Grandpa stared at Phil’s photo on the wall, willing and wishing he would return. Then the letter arrived. Grandpa handed the smudged and creased envelope to Grandma, who put down her knitting and carefully opened its contents. She scanned the neat handwriting then broke into a broad smile: “He’s coming home at last!” They went to meet him off the ship. “You look so well,” said Grandma. “And prosperous,” said Grandpa. Phil’s eyes danced with joy as he described his travels. The couple were transported to the tropical delights of Fiji with its sun-kissed shores and beautiful vistas. “I’ve found the perfect place sunshine all the year, wonderful food and happy neighbours.” Phil described the thatched house he had built and his role in the growing tourist industry. His grandparents nodded in agreement then Grandma asked nervously: “Are you going to settle there?” “Yes,” enthused Phil then paused for effect before adding: “I want you to leave this place and move out there with me you’ll be so happy. It’s a totally different world.” His grandparents’ faces dropped, thinking about the miles of ocean, the isolation and the strange food. Phil frowned then broke into his familiar smile: “Only joking!” He added softly: “Home is best.” Read my next Strange Tale in the Link: Restoration Comedy.

Time for a game of golf? A socially distanced sport in the fresh air, boasting numerous benefits, golf is more popular than ever. We find out why… The governing body for the game, England Golf, say the activity associated with playing a round of golf can help mental wellbeing by raising mood and lowering anxiety. So, it’s perhaps not surprising that last year golf saw a big upswing in those taking up the hobby. As a sociable outdoor activity, it has got a lot going for it. According to England Golf, walking and playing 18 holes will take around 15,000 steps and burn around 1,200 calories. They also say golf has been proven to extend life expectancy – on average golfers live five years longer than non-golfers! We are lucky to have some really attractive golf courses in our area and now that spring is here and the lifting of Covid-19 restrictions is on the horizon, what better time to take up golf?
Give it a Go It is recommended that you learn under the guidance of a professional coach. Group lessons are a great way to meet other beginners, make new friends and have a laugh! And, with a bit of practice, you’ll soon be hitting the ball into holes with ease and really enjoying the game. Anyone can do it, children included.
Women Get Involved There’s more to golf than you might think – and it certainly does not live up to the tired old stereotypes. It’s an inclusive sport, and there’s a drive to attract more women to the game. England Golf say currently only 15% of club members are female, meaning our country is lagging far behind many European countries. Where it all began Lewis Samuel Cohen, director of Lewis’s Limited and regarded as one of the country’s greatest shopkeepers, purchased Doe Park (the grounds on which the Golf Club sits), the beautiful club house and 45.428 acres of lucious green woodland, in 1899 with the intention of creating a golf course. It was ready for play towards the end of 1900 and Woolton Golf club was born with nine holes and later extended to eighteen holes in 1906. local history Frozen History Ice was once stored away in the winter for use throughout the year but this luxury was largely the preserve of the rich. The ancient Greeks and Romans kept snow closely packed in deep underground cellars. Emperor Nero built ice houses in Rome supplied by traders who brought snow from the summits of distant mountains.

After setbacks, the trade grew over the years. Ice was sent in the insulated holds of vessels to India, Hong Kong and elsewhere. By 1860 the Wenham Lake Ice Company was sending ice to Britain from Boston, the main centre of ice exports. However, competitors entered the market and by 1872 most ice came to the UK from Norway - 139,421 tons in that year alone.
Archaeologists have discovered ice pits in China dating from at least the 7th century BC.
Typical 30 ft by 100 ft commercial ice houses could store 2,700 tons ready for transporting.
In Britain, ice houses were built to store ice collected from ponds and lakes in winter. This was a laborious process dependent on the amount of ice available.
By this time, refrigerators were being developed which would eventually make the ice trade redundant.
Carefully packed with insulating materials – usually straw or sawdust – the ice could last for many months.
In 1874 a steam-powered refrigerator in Lambeth could produce 10 tons of ice a day. A similar machine was producing ice in Peru where ice had never been seen before. Others operated in South Africa and India, for use by troops and hospitals.
The first British ice houses were built about 1660 after the monarchy was restored following the civil war. It is thought travellers brought the idea from Italy where local people stored ice in caves.
Early refrigerators used various methods including gas and compressed air, for example, before electric fridges eventually became the norm.
The ice was mainly used for preserving and storage of food such as fish and other perishables. It was also used for ice cream or sorbets available only on the wealthiest tables.

The export of ice from America began about 1820 when supplies were shipped from Boston to the West Indies.

Hi guys and welcome to my Summer issue of ‘Life ‘n’ Style‘! I have just got back from the most amazing holiday in Bodrum, Turkey. I booked with a fab independent travel agent I came across on Instagram (@escape_savvy), she literally sorted everything from start to finish with a huge saving of over £600. I originally booked the day after my daughter Jazz finished her GCSEs as a bit of a celebration but after we checked into Liverpool Airport, our flight was delayed for 3 hours! Then we received a text whilst at the check-in gate to basically say go home as our flight had been cancelled but our travel agent sorted the holiday for the following week. She made everything really easy for us with chauffer-driven transport to and from the hotel. I would thoroughly recommend her. If you’re looking at any deals it’s definitely worth contacting her and seeing if she can beat your quote. We stayed at the Titanic Deluxe which is a huge hotel, probably the biggest I’ve ever stayed in - it was like an island! It’s a luxury 5* all-inclusive hotel with the most amazing facilities. If you follow me on Instagram, take a look at my highlight so you can see the private beaches, the cabanas, hotel room and restaurants. It really is one of the nicest places I have ever stayed and just pure luxury. You are given your own driver and buggy for when you are travelling around the hotel and a WhatsApp contact who is accessible 24/7 for anything you would like, such as drinks, food,

restaurant bookings, etc. Everything was just so easy and relaxing. I actually cannot wait to return next year. Liverpool seeks red card on foul play Liverpool City Council is looking to rein in dog owners who let their pets foul in public places – and then don’t bin it. The council has launched a monthlong consultation on a plan to introduce a city-wide Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) that will see
owners fined for failing to bag and dispose of dog mess. The draft proposal comes in response to the council receiving 1,865 complaints regarding dog fouling between January 2020 to January 2022.
Any person falling foul of the proposed new order would be committing an offence punishable by an on-the-spot £80 fine - which could rise to £1,000 if the offence went to court.
Kind donation for Armed Forces Weekend Huyton with Roby & Liverpool Branch of the Royal Air Forces Association were pleased to receive a donation of £80.00 from a local community group, called “The Keep Smiling Gang”. The Monkswell Community Group, Liverpool L7, meet each month for the usual activities of Bingo, live music, tea & sandwiches. As the July meeting was also “Armed Forces Weekend”, they decided to give whatever they raised that day to a Veterans charity.
However, a member of the Huyton with Roby & Liverpool RAFA Club was in attendance, and he suggested the Huyton branch would benefit from their Annual “Wings Appeal”.
Surprisingly, there are very few Military Veterans Clubs left in Liverpool.

Charity bike ride to mark 25 years of raising money for Marie Curie This year will mark the 25th anniversary of Xaverian’s annual charity bike ride, which raises money for end-of-life charity, Marie Curie. The event, which has been organised by Phil Lundy since it started and is undertaken by local cycling group Xaverian, takes place on the Sunday of the August Bank Holiday each year. The route starts in Ainsdale, Southport and finishes in Woolton, Liverpool, where there is a Marie Curie Hospice. Over the past 24 years, the group have raised an amazing £66,185.81 for the Marie Curie Hospice, Liverpool, which enables the charity to provide support to people who are at the end of their lives and their loved ones.
To celebrate their 25th anniversary Xaverian are asking supporters to help them to reach the incredible milestone of raising £100,000 for Marie Curie.

You said, we did - markets Nearly £1 million is to be invested in Liverpool’s markets following a public consultation to shape the future of the service. As part of Liverpool City Council’s improvement journey to reach out and listen to residents, in October 2021, they shone the spotlight on the city’s markets offer.
Members of the public were asked ‘why they do or don’t visit markets’. Market traders were also consulted to find out what improvements they would suggest for the city’s 10 markets and farmers’ markets. The markets consultation related to several sites across Liverpool, including Garston and Farmers’ markets at
Woolton, Allerton, and Lark Lane. Initiatives will all be delivered over a two-year period.
Results of governance consultation published how Liverpool should be governed from 2023 have been published. The option that received the most votes from residents was the Mayoral model. In March, Liverpool City Council launched a three-month consultation asking residents: “How would you like Liverpool City Council to be run?”. The results of the survey are:

South Liverpool FC gearing up for the new season South Liverpool FC are in preparation for the new season which starts in earnest on Saturday 30th July - an early start which allows for a mid-April finish. The first team’s pre-season schedule started as early as 2nd July and, at the time of writing, has produced four games with two wins, a draw and a defeat. There are two more games before the team host Daisy Hill in
the first North West Counties League game on 30th July at Jericho Lane at 3 pm. The next two fixtures are also at home to Chadderton on Wednesday 10th August at 7.45 pm and to newcomers Euxton Villa on Saturday 13th August at 3 pm. Reserves and third open-age teams start their West Cheshire League campaign on Saturday 6th August with home games so we wish them all the best with the start to their campaign. Our very successful under 16s team have moved into youth football and start their West Cheshire League Youth Division campaign with a home game
against City of Liverpool at our grass pitch on Saturday 13th August at 10.30 am. Our junior section goes from strength to strength and we will field 18 teams for next season. We have reduced our veterans’ teams to three from four, resulting in only one team competing on Sunday in the Cheshire Veterans League while we retain two teams in the two divisions of the I Zingari Combination. The first team on Saturday are under new management with ex-Sunday manager Adriano Rigoglioso taking charge. The second team remain under the management of Jason Webb.

Why We Should Embrace Eating Locally Grown Food The role of the food we eat has come into the spotlight in addressing climate change. More than half of our food now comes from abroad, mainly the EU, South America and SouthEast Asia. The further food travels, the greater the carbon footprint, and the greater the impact on the environment. Local food is now a mainstream trend, with more and more people seeking out local options for fresh produce and other goods. But what qualifies as “local” food? There is no legal definition of “local”, but the Campaign to Protect Rural England defines “local” as within 30 miles of where you live. But why buy local food? Some commentators point to the drawbacks: the limited range of options, it’s often more expensive, and fresh products have a shorter shelf life. But there is an increasing demand from consumers to be told where our food comes from and the practices of the farmers that grow and produce it.
So let’s look at some of the benefits: It’s better for your health Local foods often retain more nutrients because local produce is allowed to ripen naturally, while food that travels long distances is often picked before it’s ripe. Choosing fruits and vegetables grown in season may also be healthier. When researchers compared the vitamin C content of broccoli
grown in season with broccoli imported out of season, they found the latter had only half the vitamin C. It’s better for the environment Food is one of the leading drivers of climate change. Eating more local food reduces CO2 emissions by reducing food miles. The Wildlife Trust estimates that if all our food came from within 20km of where we live, we could save £1.2 billion every year in environmental and congestion costs. Buying locally also means less packaging is used to keep food fresh and saleable. It’s better for the local economy A recent report on the benefits of local food by the New Economics Foundation estimated that for every £1 spent in the local food network Growing Communities in London, a further £3.70 is generated in social, economic and environmental value. When you choose to buy locally grown food you are supporting a diverse food economy as well as creating jobs in farming and food production.
