Worthy causes win in Woolton CAN you make a difference to life in Woolton?

That’s the big question being posed to community and voluntary groups in the Liverpool suburb as part of an annual local grant funding scheme.

Each year, The Woolton Educational and Recreational Charity calls for applications from local groups that are working to improve education and recreation in the community.

The charity uses the interest from the sale of the Woolton Village Club in 2000 to provide the funding.

This year it is anticipated that the charity will have £13,000 available to support local causes.

Amongst the groups who benefited from last year’s awards were the Woolton Youth Centre, which received £1,055 for sport and gardening equipment; St James Pre-school picked up £431 to buy new play equipment; Woolton Wanderers Women’s

Institute received £821 to boost its digital technology kit and MSB Woolton Football Club got £1,700 to fund football coaching courses.

Chair of The Woolton Educational and Recreational Charity, Councillor Malcolm Kelly, said: “Over the years we have been able to support some fantastic local groups who really do amazing work to improve the quality of life for everyone within our community.

“We are hoping 2019 will be no exception which is why we are calling for applications for grant funding. Liverpool commits to beating HIV

LIVERPOOL has joined a network of cities around the world committed to beating HIV by promoting early diagnosis.

The city is to become part of the ‘Fast-Track Cities’ network, joining London, Manchester and Brighton in the UK, and 250 others around the world, aiming to eradicate AIDS as a public health threat by 2030.

There are currently 650 people in the city with HIV – a level comparable with other big core cities. However, it is estimated there are up to 115 people that are infected but unaware – and over half of people in Liverpool are diagnosed late, meaning they don’t start treatment as early as they could, which can lead to them becoming unnecessarily ill.

General Elphinstone was a veteran of several colonial wars spread across the globe as he served Queen Victoria’s colours trying to resolve conflicts in strange lands.

The grizzled old warrior hung up his uniform and married 23-year-old Lady Elspeth Mainwaring in a simple ceremony at the village church.

Harriet arrived within a year and four years later Hermione was screaming her head off in the old family cradle.

“She has very healthy lungs,” said Mrs Craddock, the nanny at Lubbock House who helped raise Elspeth and now her daughters.

“This one will certainly make her presence felt, mark my words.”

took on a reality which excluded their parents.

However, their 19-year-old governess Eliza Penny was welcomed into the secret world – the trio had an air of conspiracy about them.

The sisters wrote peculiar stories enriched by Eliza’s ideas.

All inhabited a world occupied by elves, gnomes and fairies in fern-covered glades by bubbling streams.

Harriet was 16 when she discovered her talent as a sculptress. It was one of the coldest winters on record, when everything froze and the eaves of Lubbock House were festooned with long shimmering icicles.

Hermione and Eliza were astonished when they looked out over the snow-covered lawn one morning.

Harriet stood leaning proudly on a huge spade beside two lifesized icy figures.

“These are the Lubbock Lovers,” she announced.

The quality of the effigies created out of pure snow and

ice was remarkable. They wore white fur hats, boots, coats, huge mittens and comforting scarves.

The man reached out to the woman, as if to embrace her in his icy arms.

“They haven’t even kissed,” Harriet said confidingly as she accompanied Hemione and Eliza through the snow back to the house.

That night there was a full moon and Hermione could not sleep. She crept to the window and breathed on the glass to melt the jack frost.

The Lubbock Lovers were clearly visible in the moonlight.

Hermione gasped – the icy couple were in a passionate embrace, lips pressed together and steam rising in the night air.

“I can’t explain it,” said Jethro the gardener the following morning.

Advice on waiting times at A&E If you are unfortunate enough to attend A&E, does the receptionist have a responsibility to provide you with accurate information regarding waiting times? That was the question before the Supreme Court in the recent case of Darnley v Croydon Health Services NHS Trust.

The facts of the case were relatively simple. Mr Darnley who was then aged 26 was assaulted and suffered a head injury. A friend brought him to A&E at Mayday Hospital in Croydon.

Mr Darnley was booked in at reception and explained that he had suffered a head injury, was feeling very unwell and felt he needed urgent attention.

The receptionist informed him that he would have to go and sit down and wait up to four to five hours before somebody looked at him. Mr Darnley told the receptionist that he could not wait that long as he felt he was about to collapse. He was told that if he did collapse he would be treated as an emergency. Mr Darnley sat down and waited for 19 minutes but then decided to leave because he felt too unwell and wanted to go home to take some paracetamol. Unfortunately within an hour he collapsed and was rushed back to hospital by ambulance where he underwent surgery but tragically suffered permanent brain damage. Mr Darnley brought a claim against the hospital principally alleging that his injuries would have been avoided if he had received accurate advice.

At the original Trial the specific receptionist who spoke to Mr Darnley could not be identified but the two receptionists on duty that day explained that their normal procedure would have been to state that a triage nurse would see him within 30 minutes or as soon as

possible. The Court concluded that had Mr Darnley been given this information he would have waited and his later collapse would have occurred within a hospital setting. Crucially in those circumstances he would have undergone immediate surgery and made a very near full recovery.

Mr Darnley however lost his case because the Court concluded that whilst the receptionist gave inaccurate or incomplete information, it would not be reasonable to impose liability on the hospital for the failure of a receptionist to provide advice regarding waiting times.

Mr Darnley appealed to the Court of Appeal but was unsuccessful with the Court principally concluding that the hospital did not owe a duty to advise on waiting times and to do so would impose a new layer of responsibility on clerical staff.

Finally, Mr Darnley appealed to the Supreme Court which is the final Court of Appeal in the UK for civil cases.

The Supreme Court Judges were unanimous in allowing the Appeal concluding that the Hospital had a duty to provide reasonable care not to provide misleading information which foreseeably might result in an injury.

Equally importantly, it was confirmed that it was not appropriate to distinguish between medical and non-medical staff.

This does not mean that a receptionist is now expected to give medical advice, but instead they must act with the degree of skill reasonably expected of a person in their position. In the case of Mr. Darnley this simply meant telling him he would be assessed in triage at an early stage rather giving misleading information that he would have to wait 4-5 hours before being seen.

Whether this judgement will have any real impact on the advice given by frontline staff in hospitals, GP surgeries or dentists remains to be seen. In A&E I would for example not be surprised

Music has the power not only to entertain but inspire and create lasting memories which a catchy melody or lilting refrain can conjure up.

A good tune may always be popular but, like everything else, music is subject to fashion and changing tastes.

Popular music is created and interpreted by each generation. Music from the 1960s, although half a century old, is still enjoyed and many musicians from that era still perform.

It is interesting to reflect that in the 1960s popular hits from 50 years earlier were relegated to The Good Old Days on TV and Old Time Variety shows in theatres.

Most music we listen to today is recorded but before the invention of the gramophone most music was listened to live.

People produced their own music not only at home but often in the workplace. Crews on sailing ships sang while performing tasks such as raising anchors or hauling ropes.

What shall we do with the drunken sailor? is perhaps the best-known sea shanty from the days of sail.

Whistling was also once a common sound on our streets and open spaces as people went about their daily tasks.

Many homes had pianos in the parlour. I

remember one in my grandparents’ house in Whitrman Street, Wavertree, although no-one ever played it.

As in many homes, it had been made redundant with the arrival of wind-up gramophones, wireless and television.

Sheet music was sold in large quantities.

Prospective purchasers could ask for the latest offerings to be played on the piano before buying.

The first records were made in boxed wax cylinders.

Holocaust poetry competition launched at Liverpool Schools’ Parliament PEOPLE are being invited to write poems which will be read out at Liverpool’s Holocaust Memorial Day service in January.

The theme for this year’s Holocaust Memorial Day is ‘Torn from Home’, to mark the 25th anniversary of the start of the genocide in Rwanda, in 1994.

There are three categories: children at primary school, young people at secondary school and adults aged 19+.

One from each category will be chosen to be read out at Liverpool’s Civic Service for Holocaust Memorial Day taking place in Liverpool Town Hall on Friday 25 January.

Lord Mayor, Councillor Christine Banks – who has written her own poem for the event said: “It is vital that on Holocaust Memorial Day we not only remember the millions who died in the Holocaust and subsequent genocides, but also remember

the impact that hate crime and prejudice is still having on people from all walks of life to this day.

“Our young people are talented, articulate and eloquent, and I look forward to reading their powerful and thought-provoking submissions.”

A selection of the poems entered will be included in an anthology thatwill be presented to entrants, schools and libraries in the city.

Liverpool City Council’s lead on Holocaust Memorial Day, Councillor Jeremy Wolfson, a member of the city’s Jewish community, said: “The poetry competition gives our young people an opportunity to reflect on the Holocaust and raise awareness of not only what happened but also to help make sure there is no repeat of it.

“I am sure with the ‘Torn From Home’ theme we will receive some very emotive poems.

“It’s fantastic that we have a new category this year for adults, building on last year’s competition.

“It gives us an opportunity to reflect on the Holocaust and subsequent genocides and raise awareness of not only what happened but to try and ensure that the attitudes which led to them are not repeated.

“So get submitting those poems, please tell your friends and colleagues, and good luck.”

Celebrity article – Robert Webb

COMEDIAN Robert Webb was born in 1972.

A Channel 4 favourite, he stars alongside David Mitchell in Mitchell & Webb, in the Sony award-winning That Mitchell & Webb Sound and the Bafta award-winning That Mitchell & Webb Look. He is Jeremy in Peep Show.

He grew up in Lincolnshire and according to him in his autobiography ‘How Not To Be A Boy’, published by Canongate, Lincolnshire “is a large and largely ignored county on the east coast of England, sufficiently far north to be considered Northern but somehow not Professionally Northern in the manner of, say, Yorkshire or Tyneside”.

From where he grew up, it took about an hour to get to a major road, the A1 – “also known as ‘the Lincolnshire bypass’ – and it’s this sense of isolation that gives the place some of its character and beauty, as well as some of its problems”.

Robert was born, to parents Paul and Pat (she hated Patricia), 10 months after the death of his eldest brother Martin (6) from meningitis and also had two older brothers, Mark and Andrew.

His first home was a house called Slieve Moyne in the village of Woodhall Spa, Lincolnshire.

The house was fitted with double glazing “to

make up for the familiar scream of Tornados” because they lived “next door” to RAF Coningsby.

“In later years I would think of the place as Tatooine, the planet Luke Skywalker imagines to be furthest from the bright centre of the universe. But for now it was the universe and one with which I was perfectly content. There was just one problem. When we first meet Luke on Tatooine, he has an issue with his mysteriously absent father. My father, on the other hand, was all too present. And his name might as well have been Darth Vader.

“When people saw Dad walking down the

street in Woodhall Spa, they did not think: ‘Ah there goes Paul Webb, a walking powderkeg of repressed grief.’ Paul’s public face was beloved by more or less the entire village.

Generous with his time, charismatic, cheeky, cajoling and straightforwardly kind, he didn’t so much live in that village as host it. He would walk into a pub and I would watch the whole room subtly adjust itself in his direction and settle itself in for a treat. They adored him. But then they didn’t have to live with him. Mum did.”

Robert’s mum was “a working class woman who was certainly clever, but not clever enough to avoid getting knocked up before finishing her A-levels”.

He recalls how she always had a part-time job as a school secretary, a hotel secretary or a bar-worker.

Growing up, adults referred to Robert as painfully shy and quiet. His sense of humour gradually developed.

He says: “Growing up, I was given the impression that Woodhall was one of the ‘nicer’ villages in the area. Certainly the Conservative Club, the Golf Club, the Tea House in the Woods and the Dower House Hotel – a stately procession of mock-Tudor buildings with horse-brassy fireplaces – lend the place an impregnable air of Tory respectability.”

The bins are back in town LIVERPOOL’S bins have had a major make-over.

More than 100 new larger street litter bins have been placed in the city’s parks along with a further 100 new bins to follow in residential areas in communities across the city.

These new bins are three times the size of their older counterparts and are much sturdier. They include a special

cabinet on the side that allows the various ‘friends groups’ that work in the parks to store bags, litter pickers, gloves and other items.

While on the streets some older litter bins have been refurbished, repainted and re-used or replaced with new ones if they were beyond repair.

So far the council has installed a total of 300 new bins across the city and there’s more to come.

Taking the New Year by storm and working through my life plan HEY guys and welcome to my first Life ‘n’ Style of 2019.

Hope you all had a fabulous Christmas and I hope 2019 brings you all health, wealth and happiness. I have had a lovely few weeks but I am ready to take 2019 by storm and start working through my life plan.

Last week my mum held her annual Christmas BezzyBuddies lunch at the Hilton in Liverpool. It was such a gorgeous day.

There was champagne flowing throughout and an afternoon jam packed with entertainment.

After a few glasses of wine I had my arm twisted to take to the stage to perform the Spice Girls.

At first I wanted the ground to eat me up because even though I probably appear to be really confident I’m actually quite shy but I just told myself it was all for a good cause and anything to do with charity work I’m all in.

If you haven’t yet heard of Bezzybuddies or you are new to reading my column it is an events company that my mum started up five years ago and is focused on bringing together like-minded people who all enjoy socialising, getting together and having a fabulous time.

My mum started off with about 10 Bezzybuddies and now has over 1000 people joined on the website. Each week she puts on an event whether it be a shopping trip, a night

on the town, wine tasting, weekends away or holidays.

You name it there is something for everyone no matter what your age or lifestyle enjoyments.

The programme is based on the fabulous hotel and I was lucky enough to be the first person to stay in the new Jungle Room. This room is different from any other. Can’t wait for you all to see it.

This can highlight some great things that have happened to us or some negative things.

Certainly Christmas and New Year can be an emotional time…..

Whilst my quest for you is to have a positive life and help guide you through your ups and downs, I have put together some points here that I hope will highlight some positive experiences you have had this year, as well as trying to help take you forward.

Use a piece of paper or your phone to help take some notes.

Your accomplishments: What did you do, what did you overcome, what did you achieve? What did you learn? We can all be hit with some tough situations and it’s important for our wellbeing that we try and take some positives from those

How satisfied are you? What’s missing? What didn’t you do this year? What didn’t you achieve? By answering this question, it sets you up for the next part.........

Hyundai i30 surprises at every turn

WHEN the Hyundai i30 is delivered I am pleasantly surprised.

I had been expecting a plain and functional five door hatchback. But instead I am looking at the Fastback, a much more exciting proposition.

Its sleek lines make it a vehicle to admire from the design perspective. The striking front is impressive if similar to a growing number of cars these days. The rear has hints of Mercedes about it… and Aston Martin without the hefty price tags. The i30 Fastback clearly has a talented designer. The result should be a Lexus beating sports saloon that is very pleasing on the eye and really does create a double take especially for those who have previously ignored the virtues of a Hyundai.

This family car surprises at every turn and probably the biggest achievement is the fact that it is powered by a tiddly little one-litre petrol engine, which promises low emissions. Through

turbo charging, the engineers have cleverly squeezed almost 120bhp out of it, giving more oomph than much bigger engined vehicles.

Another great feature is the satellite navigation system which is one of the easiest to operate.

Simply punch in a postcode and it will reliably take you to your destination. Unlike some set-ups it will allow a postcode to be entered without any spaces, which makes life easier.

Build quality seems a little on the flimsy side, though. For instance, when shutting one of the rear doors there is still a fair amount of give after it is closed.

While I’m on this subject I notice that the paint finish isn’t as sharp as it should be around the boot rubber. My biggest gripe though is the positioning of the three seatbelt points in the rear. Bear in mind that I am the owner of an ageing Ford Fiesta and I regularly travel with three cumbersome car seats in the back without a problem. Therefore, I do not anticipate any problems in fitting the same three car seats in more modern vehicles. The Hyundai is a considerably larger car.

But oh dear oh dear. The positioning of the belt buckle slots means that I must have wasted

over an hour of my time during the course of the test fiddling around fitting the car seats for my two daughters.

Because Henry’s is a slightly wider Cosatto seat it covers both slots for Harriett’s and Heidi car seats. I dread every time we all return to the car because I know that my fingers are really going to hurt as I have to forcibly lift Henry’s seat up to make allow for Harriett and Heidi to be strapped in. I have had some problems with other new cars but never to this extent. This really does need improving.

Liverpol Sefton hockey – mid-season round up

AS THE second batch of league matches approach we’re taking a look at how Liverpool Sefton have started the 18-19 season.

The W1s had a tough few months and are still without a win in the Northern Premier League.

A series of draws have put points on the board but they haven’t found their old form to take three points.

The M1s are sitting comfortably in North Division Two. A change in captaincy hasn’t unbalanced the team with four wins, three draws and four defeats demonstrating steady performances in the build up to Christmas.

The W2s had a strong start to the season but came up against tough opposition and slipped to seventh in North Division Two West. The team has a three-point cushion over local rivals Liverpool Uni. The M2s are struggling to find last year’s form after a series

of personnel changes including another new captain. They sit 10th in NW Division 3 South but look likely to remain in the new league.

The W3s have taken 14 points from eight games and have a healthy goals for tally of 17.

They’re currently in fourth place in Lancashire Division One and only a point behind second placed Mossley Hill.

The M3s have settled into their new league nicely. After two successive promotions the lads have lodged themselves firmly in 6th place with six wins and five losses so far.

The W4s are the second team in the club still waiting to take all three points. There had been a high turnover of players but as things settle the on-pitch performance is improving.

The W5s had a roaring start, winning as many games in the first few weeks as they did all of last season. With a dedicated coach and a healthy squad size the team is looking to push higher in 2019.

Puskas unveiling at South Parkway

A SPECIAL presentation took place at the South Liverpool Parkway bus and railway station recently.

The station was previously the site of South Liverpool FC’s ground at Holly Park.

On a special night in May 1967 over 10,000 football fans packed into the ground to witness one of the greatest footballers of all time, Hungarian international Ferenc Puskas, play a charity match in aid of the local children’s charity Bankfield House.

51 years later the Hungarian community in Liverpool, led by Dr Andrew Zsigmond, arranged for the famous night to be commemorated with a plaque now positioned at the station next to Costa Coffee!

Bearing in mind that Puskas is the most famous Hungarian of all time there was a very significant presence at the unveiling.

The Mayor of Budapest and the Hungarian Ambassador to the UK were both present as well as the Hungarian consul in Liverpool and Granada Reports!! Liverpool FC legend Ian Callaghan was also in attendance, as was well-known local football writer John Keith.

South Liverpool’s first team have struggled of late but have progressed to the quarter final of the Liverpool County FA Challenge Cup which will be played in February.

The reserves have progressed

to the semi-final of the West Cheshire League second division league cup with a great 3-1 win at Heswall with goals from Jordan McGowan, David Mee and Luke Partington.

The youth team have progressed to the semi-final of the Liverpool Premier League youth division cup with a penalty shootout win over Stanley House after Jack Heard scored a last second equaliser in extra time to earn a 4-4 draw.

The veterans had an excellent 3-1 win at main rivals Vauxhall Motors with two goals from Mark Ellison to take a nine-point lead at the top of the Cheshire Veterans League first division.
