E-scooters have become a familiar sight in many cities across the UK, however private e-scooters can only be used on private land and not public roads, cycle lanes or pavements, so it is only those you can rent as part of the government backed trials that we should see. The Government have heralded the trials as a success as they often result in faster journey times than cars, can be used for deliveries in place of mopeds and help people from poorer backgrounds avoid the cost of getting a driving licence. The Transport Secretary, Grant Shapps included legislation concerning e-scooters in the Queens Speech on 10th May However there is still considerable concern regarding their use. The emergency services attended 713 accidents involving the use of e-scooters in 2021, compared to 392 in 2020 Data shows a 40% rise in e-scooter riders being taken to A&E over the same period. A teenage girl became the latest person to die in the UK whilst riding an e-scooter after a crash with a van in March 2022.
In December, Transport for London banned e-scooters from its network after a number of fires were caused by the devices, some resulting in injury. There are around 18,000 rental scooters but there are still believed to be about 750,000 private scooters in use across the U.K. With legalisation, we could be set to see a significant increase in accidents and injuries. Woolton ‘Open Gardens’ Fundraiser for Woolton in Bloom 3rd July 12 noon to 5pm
Entry by Programme £5.00 (accompanied children Free) On Sunday 3rd July, Woolton Village will throw open its beautiful gardens to all garden lovers in a bid to raise money for the fantastic Woolton in Bloom society, who work tirelessly to keep Woolton Village fabulously floral. In an event not to be missed, 11 intrepid garden owners across Woolton Village open their, usually private, garden gates to the public and play hosts to curious visitors. Green fingers or not - everyone is welcome! Woolton has a great variety of homes and gardens, ranging from a hidden garden in Quarry Street, a walled garden in the park and the splendid Bishop’s Lodge. Also including those in detached and semi-detached homes, each garden has its own unique character and will put on a show for the day. Every garden will hold an activity to raise funds, from plant sales to soft drinks, raffles or games. Refreshments are being provided by Woolton’s Women’s Institute at the Bishop’s Lodge in Woolton Park. This year, visitors will be entertained by a local group, ‘The Waltones’, and a ukulele group, ‘Florrie and the Ukes’.
All proceeds will go to Woolton in Bloom to help finance its work keeping Woolton a Blooming village. The programme gives access to all the gardens and will be on sale at Woolton’s Farmers’ Market (2nd Saturday of every month), WOW WI, the Woolton Society, Brown’s newsagents or the gardens on the day. My neighbours and I will be having our own street party, which will also be a lovely excuse to catch up and spend time together. A big thank you from Marie Curie to the people of Liverpool The end-of-life charity Marie Curie had its annual Great Daffodil Appeal boosted thanks to the tremendous support of people across Liverpool last month. To mark the launch of this year’s appeal, Marie Curie created a daffodil artwork made of 4,129 LED tea lights (see pictured) – representing the number of people Marie Curie looked after across its nine hospices and in private homes per month last year. Collections held at Morrisons Belle Vale & Speke across the first 3 weekends in March raised over £8210 and collections
in ASDA Hunts Cross on 25th/26th March raised over £1375 with all funds going towards enabling Marie Curie to care for more people living with a terminal illness, and their families. local history Stone Age Mysteries Many theories surround the origins of Liverpool’s oldest relics - the ancient Calderstones and Robin Hood’s Stone, part of the landscape for thousands of years. The Calderstones have been an attraction at the park for generations but Robin Hood’s Stone in Booker Avenue is less well-known. The Calderstones are pictured at their original location after the mound originally covering them was removed for roadworks. Robin Hood’s Stone (inset) bears a striking resemblance and many believe it was originally also part of the Neolithic tomb, from an era stretching from about 4000 to 2400 BC.

Field on Greenhill Farm about 1833, some years after the mound was removed. The apparent reason for laboriously carting the huge monolith more than a mile was to provide a rubbing stone for cattle. This sounds implausible and does not explain the grooves. Others cite a boundary dispute record from 1568 indicating that a stone from the Calderstones was removed around 1550. This could support the stone being used by archers. Calder is derived from the Anglo-Saxon word gualder meaning a wizard or enchanter, indicating they were revered before Norman times. Only the tops of the stones were visible sticking out of the sandy mound. They were first disturbed between 1760 and 1790 - investigators found urns and human bones.
Local historian Charles Hand, writing in 1912, said: “We are taken back to a period, ages before Roman or Saxon, Dane or Norman, set foot on these shores.
The stones were defaced by vandals who cut their initials and outlines of boots and feet on the stones.
“Far back to a time when the British Islands were peopled wholly by tribes of one race, imbued with one common thought, to which they gave expression by the same symbols.” Many have tried to interpret the symbols on the stones. Some speculated that the grooves on Robin Hood’s Stone were drainage channels for bloody sacrifices rather than the result of countless arrows being sharpened.
The stones were moved into the circular enclosure at the entrance of Calderstones Park by Joseph Need Walker who lived there between 1825 and 1875. They were a popular outdoor feature until 1954 when they were moved under cover and can now be seen at the mansion house. Andy’s Man Club is a free-to-attend talking group for men that offers a free brew and a non-judgemental, safe space to get things off their chest, to help you through life’s storms and challenge the stigmas around Male Mental Health. Andy’s Man Club (AMC) is a men’s Mental Health national charity which has recently hit 100 clubs all across the UK. The Liverpool club has been going since November 2021, but Andy’s Man Club originated in Halifax in 2016. That first night 9 men turned up and talked. There was a magic in that room that everyone knew had to be shared. Who is Andy? Andy Roberts was a loving and doting father, son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin and friend. He was an all-round top guy, one of the truly nicest people. Sadly and tragically,
without any warning, Andrew, at 23 years of age, was taken away from all his family and friends by suicide. On average one man in the UK takes his life every two hours. It’s often said a factor is that men don’t talk. That is why AMC was born - to honour Andy’s memory and break down these stigmas, support men struggling with Mental Health issues and lend a hand to suicide prevention. 5 easy strategies to get back in the habit As summer approaches it can sometimes feel like we’re coming out of hibernation as we peel off the layers of woollies and emerge blinking into the sunlight. Don’t change too quickly And don’t try to do too much too soon, you may just be setting yourself up for failure. Focus on the psychological benefits too Concentrate on how you feel rather than how you look. This might mean being less out of breath when you climb stairs, sleeping better, or being more alert. Find something you love doing Consistency is key if you want to get fit. This means you need to find activities you love doing so you return to them again and again. If you love socialising with others, think about trying a team sport or doing a group fitness class like Zumba. Move every day You have more than 600 muscles in your body that need to be worked on a regular basis to stay functional. By moving, you are strengthening your muscles, which improves stability, balance, and coordination. That doesn’t mean a 5k run every day or bench-pressing your own bodyweight.

Success for Liverpool wine company at prestigious awards Liverpool based wine company, ThinK Wine Group, won a Silver award at the highly prestigious People’s Choice Wine Awards on Monday night. The awards offer consumer-friendly categories and ThinK won Silver in the ‘Big Night In’ category. Katherine Jones, from Aigburth and CEO of ThinK Wine Group, commented ‘We are absolutely delighted to have won a Silver award in

Pupils from HeyGreen Primary get creative to learn impact of food waste Pupils at Heygreen Primary School in Wavertree took part in an extracurricular, interactive workshop to learn about the issues and impact of food waste on the environment, and how to reduce waste by getting inventive on a smoothie bike using commonly wasted fruits and vegetables. Coinciding with Stop Food Waste Day on 27th April, pupils were taught how best to minimise waste by appreciating

their plate, cooking smarter and learning to recycle, reduce and reuse. During the workshop, the pupils got the chance to make smoothies using commonly wasted fruit and vegetables, inspiring them to love their leftovers, get their thinking caps on and be creative on the smoothie bike. Recipe cards were also distributed for the children to take home to get their families excited and engaged with
the campaign with the hope to ignite change for the future.
Liverpool wins big at BAFTA TV awards TV dramas Time and Help bagged two gongs each at the BAFTA TV awards, marking the first prizes for projects supported by the Liverpool City Region production fund, managed by Liverpool City Council’s Film Office. The fund was launched to increase the number, range and scale of feature films and scripted TV made in our area, and is supported by £3 million from the

Come Together for Pride After two years without in-person Pride celebrations in the city region, LCR Pride Foundation has revealed its new annual theme for 2022/23 – Come Together. The annual theme celebrates the return of the charity’s flagship event Pride in Liverpool (30th July) and the annual March with Pride on the same date. In keeping with the theme’s ethos of togetherness and collaboration, LCR Pride Foundation is also supporting events in other parts of the region, including St Helens Pride (2nd July) and Pride at the Seaside (27th August), a brand new event in New Brighton, Wirral.
The new campaign year will see LCR Pride Foundation continue to work with partners from across the region
to progress its aim of making the Liverpool City Region the most LGBT+ friendly in the UK.
Liverpool to welcome the Birmingham 2022 Queen’s Baton Relay Liverpool will be giving the Birmingham 2022 Queen’s Baton Relay a warm welcome when it arrives in the city on Monday 18 July.
It is set to travel the length and breadth of England for a total of 29 days, before culminating at the Opening Ceremony for Birmingham 2022 on 28 July 2022.
Birmingham 2022 is hosting the 16th official Queen’s Baton Relay – a journey which brings together and celebrates communities across the Commonwealth during the build-up to the Games.
The Liverpool route, the Batonbearers and the series of activities is still due to be announced at the time of print. Members of the public will be encouraged to get involved with the celebrations during the visit.

Trevor Langley’s Guide to Wine & Spirits Wines: A Choice Selection Certainly, there are many retailers, independents, supermarkets and other outlets, that offer numerous wines. A good number of which are of excellent and superb quality. For this quest, I searched for a range of wines, that are widely available and decided to go for the red and white options. VINHO VERDE LOUREIRO (12% vol), from Portugal, is a most acceptable white wine production. I found this wine to be fresh, fruity and, although great on its own, to pair with white fish dishes, plus salads, perfectly. ALBARINO ADELANTE (12.5% vol) is from Spain. This white wine is extremely popular. Grapes are handpicked, from the Galacia region. Fruits, on the nose, are then enticed to the mouth’s pleasures and sensation on the palate. Great with seafood dishes, particularly. For red wines, I chose TOSCANA (13% vol) from Italy. This wine has many ‘devotees’, being handcrafted, in collaboration with one of the oldest and most highlyregarded wine estates, in Tuscany. This very impressive,

aged production, has dark fruit flavours in abundance, which follow from the nasal pleasures. Wonderful to pair with red meats and casseroles. Another ‘famous’ red wine is BAROLO (14% vol). This ‘King of Wines’ and ‘Wine of Kings’ is renowned for its distinctive high-quality, being produced by utilising Nebbiolo grapes, to great advantage. Again, from Italy, this wine, which is also aged, has connoisseurs who regularly enjoy the bouquet, pronounced flavours and long finish. Perfect to accompany steak, beef and red meat dishes. I located these wines at a Morrisons store. The wines described are within the ‘the Best’ range. This range of wines comes from their wine experts, who constantly search for exceptional quality wines, from around the world, which are produced by some of the very best wine producers, globally. South Liverpool review of the season defeat in both league cup competitions in penalty shoot-outs, losing to Ashton Town after a 1-1 draw and to Barnton after a 4-4 draw in which South striker Cameron Dalton scored a 15th-minute hat-trick!
The 2021/22 season saw the football world get somewhat back to normal after the horrors of the pandemic and lockdown. South Liverpool FC had an action-packed season which at the time of writing had still not finished! Having gained promotion into the semi-professional ranks, playing in the first division north of the North West Counties League, South’s first team had a satisfactory first season at the highest level that the club had played at for 30 years. The team ended with
South’s reserves finished a satisfactory ninth in the second division of the West Cheshire League, often achieving better results against the top teams than the rest of the division. South’s third team had an excellent first season in the West Cheshire League third division finishing runners-up. They defeated the runaway champions Sutton Athletic twice including a final day 6-0 win which included a club record hat-trick of penalties for Tom Feeley. The club’s youth team had finished runners-up in both league and cup

the previous season. Having finished runners-up in this season’s cup, they were close to catching the eventual champions Vauxhall Motors before too many matches caught up with the team. The club’s veterans teams have all competed well throughout the season but it was the Saturday first team that acquired the silverware. Entering the I-Zingari Combination Challenge Cup which was open to open-age teams the team defeated Allerton Over 35s in the final by 2-0. The club’s under 16s had an excellent season in their first season in the national Junior Premier League having clinched the divisional title, a win in the league cup final and final against old-rivals Herald on Tuesday 24th May at 7pm at Walton Hall Park.

How to tackle fleas You may have noticed your pet scratching himself more this summer — chances are, it’s because he’s picked up fleas. It is a myth that fleas are a sign of a dirty home, so there is nothing to be ashamed of! Fleas are focused little insects who, once they’ve hitched a ride on your pet and fed on his blood, will lay their eggs and begin to reproduce! Cleaning, including thorough vacuuming, and regularly washing pet bedding, have a vital part to play, but to really get rid of them, you will need extra help.
Most pet owners understand that they need to protect their dog or cat or rabbit against fleas, and there are various types of product that can do this, from spot-ons to tablets, sprays and powders. The key to a successful approach is to have a regime that you stick to throughout the year. It’s best to get advice from your vet to find a quality treatment that suits your individual pet and his lifestyle. For example, an outdoor cat will need a more ‘belt and braces’ approach compared to an indoor cat. And if you find it difficult to administer a flea treatment, a vet nurse will be able to demonstrate, or give the treatment for you.
The Flea Life Cycle The female flea lays her eggs — up to 20 per day — in your pet’s fur. These fall onto the floor, bedding or furniture where they hatch into larvae, which will crawl into cool, dark spaces like carpet or skirting boards. The larvae spin themselves into a cocoon called a pupa. The pupae will only hatch into adult fleas when a food source walks by, be it animal or human.
Home Treatment The flea’s life cycle means the only way to get on top of a flea infestation is to treat your home as well as your pet. Look for household flea treatments which combine insecticides with Insect Growth Regulators (IGRs). Such products have a dual action effect - the insecticide kills the adult fleas and halts the development of eggs and larvae. These spray-format products are long-lasting, some being effective for six months. Use them on carpets, soft furnishings, skirting boards, and of course, your pet’s bedding. NEVER use a flea product intended for a dog on a cat. The concentrated permethrin used in some flea products designed for dogs is highly toxic to cats!
If your pet is scratching more than usual, it is worth getting him checked out to discover the cause since animals can suffer from a range of allergies that can make them itch. If you spot fleas and flea dirts (black specks) in your pet’s coat, don’t panic and give him an ‘extra dose’ of a flea treatment. Doubling up on what are quite powerful chemicals can be harmful. So, if you have already applied a drop-on or a flea product on your cat or dog, do not be tempted to fit a flea collar for good measure!
