More than 4 years after the Grenfell Tower tragedy, a new system has been proposed to allow leaseholders a way to escape the cladding crisis. It is estimated that over 1million people are financially affected by the crisis which includes some 600,000 leaseholders across the country. The issue over the safety of cladding has been an ongoing concern of the property industry and the Government has now set out a new plan for the protection of leaseholders against the potential significant cost involved in resolving the issue. The plan includes making wealthy developers and companies pay to fix the crisis themselves, meaning that no leaseholder living within a building between 11 and 18 meters high, will have to pay anything towards fixing any unsafe cladding. Whilst the government has currently given the industry two months to agree to a financial contribution scheme voluntarily; should it be met with resistance, they have indicated they will impose a solution in law. The plan also includes additional measures for the protection of leaseholders such as the installation of fire alarms in high-risk buildings and amendments to the Building Safety Bill. This will replace the prior, controversial scheme which involved the government covering the cost for buildings taller than 18 metres, while owners in smaller buildings were instructed to take out loans to finance the works themselves. However, this does not change the current restriction for those living in a building above 18 meters, who must wait for the works to be done before they are allowed to sell their flats. It remains to be seen what will happen. Many have already pointed out that the proposed twomonth time limit is an ambitious one, and given how long

it has taken for this point to be reached, we are perhaps unlikely to see the full impact of this new plan in this short time. However, this step to protect some leaseholders is a welcomed one. We are currently acting in a number of transactions involving properties affected by cladding issues and whilst the proposals above may go some way to alleviating the concern of current owners and the potential costs involved, there is still little progress to report for those looking to sell properties. Problems still exist owing to the shortage of surveyors able to provide the elusive “EWS1” form, which confirms whether a property is affected by cladding issues – we therefore hope that the Government will also turn its attention to this vital issue. local history Giants on the move The two colossal statues guarded the entrance to Brown’s Building next to Liverpool Town Hall, symbols of the port’s Victorian prosperity. Designed by eminent architect and local historian Sir James Picton and opened in 1863, the enormous office complex was made from the finest materials. A contemporary writer enthused: “Its extent and costliness are indications of the increased wealth of the mercantile community and of the vast amount of business transacted on the Liverpool Exchange, which the structure adjoins.” Commissioned by and named after banker Sir William Brown, the structure on Exchange Street West cost an eye-watering £60,100. Built largely from sandstone and granite, there were four floors of offices as well as attic and basement accommodation. The area had seen spectacular change over the previous century: “Down to the year 1786, when the improvements were effected to the west side of Castle Street, the Town Hall was encumbered with mean hovels which approached very closely to its walls”. Brown’s Buildings also featured elaborate decorations the two 13ft high Titans on either side of the main entrance were complemented by four statues representing the seasons standing high above (see picture and insets).

There were also Corinthian columns, a sculptured balustrade and other fine decorative features. Brown’s Buildings lasted just 65 years before being pulled down to make way for the equally-impressive Martin’s Bank Buildings, one of Britain’s greatest Art Deco masterpieces. Countless people had admired the two mighty stone Titans which looked as if they might spring into life at any time. Depicting Greek gods born of the sky and earth, mythical giants inspiring awe and wonder, their admirers made sure they stayed in the city. When Brown’s Buildings was demolished in 1928, the Titans and Four Seasons - all carved by architectural sculptor Edwin Stirling - were saved. They were taken to Allerton to decorate the new entrance to Harthill Gardens. When they were moved to Harthill there was still a mansion in the grounds, built by Stanley Perceval, member of a wellknown Liverpool family. He was a relative of Spencer Perceval, the Prime Minister murdered in the House of Commons in 1812 by a failed Liverpool businessman. Harthill House and its estate had been acquired by Liverpool City Council in 1913. The house was a police HQ before being pulled down in 1937. Back garden birdwatching Over the past year (and then some!), we have spent a lot of our time in our homes and gardens and so, by now, we may also be familiar with the regular wild visitors. Chances are you’ve been taking pleasure in putting seed onto a bird table and watching the different birds arriving through the day. Perhaps it has piqued your interest to know more about the familiar and unusual birds that you might have seen. If that’s the case, why not contribute to an ongoing survey on garden birds? Each week, all year round, for the past 25 years, ‘citizen scientists’ have recorded the birds and other wildlife visiting their gardens, enabling researchers at the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) to answer important questions about garden wildlife. you to access to the online recording system, a regular e-newsletter with information on recording and identifying garden wildlife, as well as access to the BTO’s team of wildlife experts, to answer your questions. The organisation say: “The more we know about how wildlife uses our gardens, the more we can make our cities, towns, villages and individual gardens better for nature.” The survey involves simply keeping a list of the birds you see visiting your garden over the course of a week, and then entering this into the BTO’s online recording system. You can also record other garden wildlife, such as butterflies and mammals.

How to get involved The Garden BirdWatch is normally run as a membership, with an annual fee of £17 but is free for the first year right now, that entitles you to a helpful book and regular magazines. The generous financial support of participants is what allows BTO to carry out its work monitoring garden wildlife and its scientific research. Membership also entitles

A growing membership and up to 60,000 volunteer birdwatchers contribute to the organisation’s surveys, collecting information that underpins conservation action in the UK. The BTO’s work is funded by supporters, government trusts, industry and conservation organisations. Strange Tales

Speaking Volumes Elspeth loved books not only for their contents but their appearance, smell and texture: she enjoyed their touch before discovering their secrets. Harrington House had a large library, assembled by Elspeth’s family over generations. Shelves groaning with volumes ran along every wall, filling the air with a strange but pleasant mustiness. Elspeth could only reach the lower shelves so to access the higher ones she stood on piles of books. She dusted the books, a chore she relished – some had not been opened for years. Father said: “There were many eccentrics in the family - that speaks volumes. One even kept a private zoo with animals shipped into Liverpool.” There were some dusty old tomes in a corner which made Elspeth shiver. They were is the gloomiest part of the library, well away from the oriel window draped in heavy velvet curtains. She found herself looking again and again at these particular books, bound in red and green leather, worn smooth with age. Holding the books, she had a strange sense of wrinkly old hands also caressing the volumes. One, dated on the title page MDCXXXIV, had peculiar plans on many of the thick, dusty pages. “What were these for in 1634?” pondered Elspeth, having worked out the Roman numerals. Most seemed to be designs for boxes of various sizes, or were they rooms? Then she remembered the library was one of the oldest parts of Harrington House, built in the 17th century about the time of the mysterious books.

One dark, rainy winter’s day it was far too bad to go out so Elspeth retreated to her books. An eerie light seemed to emanate from the gloomy corner. She took down the 1634 volume. A hoarse, wheezy voice seemed to come from inside the row of books in front of her: “Open it, little one,” the voice cajoled. The book fell open at one of the curious box plans, this one with breathing holes as if to house an animal. Suddenly, the library went pitch black. Elspeth could see nothing until her eyes became accustomed to the gloom. The library, books … everything had vanished: she was in the box in the book illustration. The space was larger than she had imagined. She stood up. Smooth wooden walls matched the plain floor. High above, the air holes let in a strange green light. There was a smell she could not place - was it dog, cow or horse? It was similar to the reek of cages in circuses and menageries she had visited. A menacing growl came from behind her. Elspeth was about to turn around when … She was back in the library, the book at her feet. Years later she supervised renovations at Harrington House. Everyone but Elspeth was baffled when a lion’s skeleton was discovered in one of the cellars. It had an old man’s mummified head – his face frozen in terror - gripped in its jaws. 5 Ways to Save Money When Moving House There are a surprising number of costs involved in moving home, from estate agents to surveyors and removal companies. Which? has calculated that the total average cost of moving home in Britain is now more than £12,000. Though as the largest expenses tend to be those charged as a proportion of your property value, such as estate agent fees and stamp duty, this can vary widely across the country.

Buttermilk Pancakes Start your morning right with this tasty breakfast treat. And if you have kids, why not get them involved for some weekend fun? Makes 12 pancakes Preparation time: 25 minutes plus standing time Cooking time: 15-20 minutes

Ingredients ■■ 175g plain flour ■■ ¾ tbsp caster sugar ■■ ½ tsp salt

Sift the flour, sugar, and bicarbonate of soda into a mixing bowl. Beat the egg lightly into the buttermilk and vegetable oil in a large jug. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and beat to a smooth creamy batter. Leave to stand for at least 30 minutes Brush a non-stick frying pan with oil and place over a medium heat. Pour enough batter to make 10cm round pancakes. Cook for 1½ – 2 minutes per side. Set aside on a warmed plate covered with a linen cloth until all pancakes are cooked.

What if you don’t have buttermilk?

■■ 1 egg

Buttermilk lends a beautiful flavour to this recipe but its not an ingredient many of us have lying around. But don’t worry, it’s incredibly easy to make.

■■ 375ml buttermilk ■■ 3tbsp vegetable oil

Serving suggestions Choose from whipping cream, bananas, berries, maple syrup and smoked bacon.

Method

Mix 240ml whole milk with 1 tbsp white vinegar or lemon juice. Let it sit for five minutes until it’s thickened and curdled slightly. Use it one for one in recipes requiring buttermilk. So, for this recipe use 360ml milk with 1½ tbsp vinegar or lemon juice.

City centre connectivity scheme solution proposed Buses could be given the green light to travel in both directions on Lime Street, if a recent proposal is approved by city councillors at the next Environment and Climate Change Committee (due to take place at 25 January at time of writing). The alteration will also include enhanced pedestrian crossings, improved cycle facilities, secure cycle parking, a bus stop outside Lime Street

station, disabled parking facilities and the introduction of a 20 mph zone together with access-only restrictions on Lime Street, between Queens Square Bus Station and London Road. The road has already been narrowed from Lime Street Station up to the Adelphi Hotel, and no further changes are planned here.

Have your say and help transform the health of city residents Are you a regular gym-goer, or do you love to get active in the beautiful surroundings of your local green space? Perhaps you struggle to fit exercise in, or just don’t feel motivated to be part of a physical activity. Whatever your situation, your help is needed. A brand new city-wide consultation has launched with the aim of creating a thriving leisure offer that all Liverpool residents can benefit from. Residents are being asked to fill in a short online survey which will give the city council an insight into how

people in the city currently stay active, what sports and activities they want in their community and what service improvements they would like made. The responses will help shape a new approach over the coming years which will focus on transforming the health and wellbeing of residents. The physical activity survey will take around ten minutes to complete and can be found at www.liverpool.gov.uk/ consultations. The survey will close at midnight Sunday 20 February and the findings of the study will be released in April 2022.

Hey guys, welcome to my February/March issue of Life ‘n’ Style I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas. Mine was so nice to be surrounded by family and friends but, unfortunately, I ended up with Covid for New Year (Omicron variant this time round) but to be honest it was nowhere near as bad as it was first time around. I was just grateful that I was better in time to celebrate my birthday! I had such a fabulous time. I think I have been the talk of social media with the photograph I posted of my cake. Everyone knows I’m a huge fan of the designer Valentino (I think I actually have an addiction to buying their bags!). So what a gorgeous surprise it was when my friend, Meg, got me a copy of a Valentino bag done as a birthday cake. Not only did it look amazing, it tasted absolutely divine! For my birthday, I wore a little two piece from PrettyLittleThing. I love how versatile co-ord sets are. It comes in two different colours. I wore the black version

for an event just before Christmas so went for the white version this time. It’s only £41.00 for the set so you aren’t breaking the bank. I teamed mine with my new Silver Valentino Rock Stud bag. Not sure about you guys but I have started 2022 off feeling very positive. Every year, I write down my goals and plans and make them happen. I am fully in the gym zone. I don’t think there’s anything better than getting into the gym or a class first thing - getting all them endorphins going just sets you up for a fantastic day ahead! I’m now a member of Athelis in Warrington and David Lloyd in Kirkby as the Studio At The Suites hotel has sadly closed. If you’re looking to refresh your loungewear/comfy day outfits, I’m loving the ‘Roma’ pattern lounge sets from Glamify Fashion. They are reduced to £65 for the set, and come in the range of colours: taupe, blue, pink, cream, black, green and orange. I love them so much that I have one in every colour! For me, the show stopping colours are green, blue and pink. I have been stopped so many times by people asking where I got them. Veganism – It’s Not Just for January Every year, hundreds of thousands of people sign up for the Veganuary campaign. According to the Guardian, in 2021 a record 500,000 people worldwide took the Veganuary pledge to embrace plant-based diets for the month of January. This figure was up by 100,000 on 2020 and double the number of people who signed up for Veganuary in 2019. There is no doubt that veganism is on the rise. Recent research from TNS Kantar consumer panels shows that vegan meals now account for 1 in 8 meals we prepare at home, which equates to an additional 350 million plates of food that are now vegan-friendly. It’s not just with home cooking where veganism is starting to take hold. By the end of 2020 every one of the UK’s top supermarkets officially had their own vegan range. Tesco revealed a 300% rise in vegan meat sales, and committed to introducing more plant-based sausages, burgers and products designed to emulate meat.

Why are we switching to plant-based cuisine? Here are some of the main reasons we’ve found: for some, it’s about maintaining a longer and healthier life. For others, it’s about preserving the global food supply chain.

Whether a wholly or partial vegan (or “flexitarian”) lifestyle is for you or not, it’s clear that by opting to choose more plantbased products, we can reduce overall carbon emissions, produce more food to feed those in third world countries, and give more land back to our planet through reduced animal agriculture.

Vegan diets focus primarily on fruits, vegetables, nuts and whole grains that include fibre, antioxidants and essential nutrients, the health benefits are obvious. Easing your dog’s separation anxiety Your dog was probably thrilled to have your company during lockdown, but now normal(ish) life has resumed, he could be missing you more than you realise. For a dog that doesn’t have the coping skills to deal with being ‘home alone’, life can be anything from an occasional misery to a constant state of anxiety and stress. This isn’t them being disobedient or punishing you for leaving them. It is like a human panic attack – involuntary and highly distressing. Whether you have a puppy or an older dog, spend as much time working on this as you do on your exercise, training and interactive enrichment to ensure your dog is as happy as he can be. 7 Ways to teach your dog home alone skills 1. The aim of teaching your dog that being on his own is ‘safe’ and even enjoyable, is to ensure that when you leave them, they have something tasty or fun to do. 2. Use stair gates in doorways so you can prevent your dog constantly following you around. 3. While he’s eating his dinner, leave the room for a minute (use a stair gate so he can’t follow you.) It’ll help him learn that good things can happen while you are not there. Gradually build up the time you are away. 4. If you have a secure garden, scatter-feed your dog’s kibble in the grass for him to hunt out. Once he understands this new feeding game, you can scatter it a bit wider - and leave him for a few minutes while he hunts it out.

Spin is always curious when out and about and likes to stop to say hello to people, or investigate anything that smells interesting. She enjoys a game of fetch and is an active girl who would suit a lively family. Spindle is rather under socialised and lacks confidence when it comes to meeting other dogs but, if introduced slowly and properly, is happy to walk with them. Any children living in or visiting the home will need to be 12 or over, as we don’t know if she has any experience of being around young kids. She would like a home where someone is around for most of the day, but the time she spends alone can be built up gradually. South in Dogfight South Liverpool FC are experiencing the realities of semi-professional football as the team are struggling to avoid the bottom three of the North West Counties League first division north. Despite some good performances, the team have been unable to translate this into wins recently. A 2-2 draw at in-form Garstang would have been considered a good point but losing an early two goal lead after having a man sent off seemed more

like a defeat. A 2-1 loss at high-flying AFC Blackpool should have been a win but for two goals ruled out for offside and a very late home winner. The attendance record at the new Jericho Lane complex was broken with the visit of champions-elect Bury AFC and although South put in a good performance Bury ran out 2-0 winners, the first goal being worthy of winning any game.

The next four league games against Darwen, Ashton Town, St Helens Town and Atherton LR are crucial to decide where the team will finish. The only home game within this run is against St Helens Town which has been switched to Friday night on 4th February. The club are hopeful that there will be an increased attendance at the first match, kicking off at 7.30pm at the new Jericho Lane sports complex Otterspool Drive Liverpool, L17 5AL. Special mention to the club’s Under 16s who are competing in the prestigious Junior Premier League this season and after a difficult start are now currently on an 8 match unbeaten run which has included a 5-1 win at Warrington Rylands, 2-1 win at Rochdale and a 2-1 win at Tranmere Rovers.
