FORBIDDEN ITEMS:

‘To Bring, or Not to Bring?’

There are several items that are prohibited by the Duquesne University Office of Residence Life and Lumina Communities. Rest assured that each of these items has been barred from our communities due to real-life events and/or safety concerns.

Approved Alternatives
  • Instead of a ceiling fan, try a box fan or fan tower

  • Live trees are prohibited, but live or faux indoor plants are welcome!

  • Instead of a door lock or alarm, consider a personal, handheld safety alarm

  • Skip the space heater & halogen lamps, and opt for comfy throw blankets

  • Motors, motorized vehicles, and hoverboards are not permitted, but you may bring your bicycle!

  • No paint please! But feel free to practice your artistic side with water colors or other craft paints and supplies.

  • Open flames — like candles — are a “no-go” but plug-in wall fresheners are permitted.

  • Instead of a water bed, opt for a mattress topper or mattress pad.

  • Hanging items from the ceiling is not allowed, but wall hangings are OK. (Nails & removable adhesives only!)

  • Make sure all appliances are UL-approved!

  • Fireworks are not permitted, but projectors are.

Other Prohibited Items:
  • Gasoline, Oil, & Flammable Liquids

  • Smoke & Fog Machines

  • Lofts or Bed Risers (including cinder blocks)

  • Hand-held Laser Pointers
