Going into 2023 it could be said it’s not the brightest of starts with soaring inflation, an energy crisis and strikes looming. But there are many positives – times like these often bring communities together and we see the very best in people who are willing to help others.

In this issue of Live Ribble Valley, we speak to the outgoing manager of Ribble Valley Food Bank. For the past year, Pete Simm has been co-ordinating the food bank with an army of willing volunteers, who supply provisions for those in need. While the Ribble Valley is renowned as being one of the most affluent areas in the region, there are still people who desperately need help, through no fault of their own. If you are able, please show your support by donating items of food – this is a vital lifeline for many.

Also in this issue, we welcome the leader of Ribble Valley Borough Council, Stephen Atkinson, who is determined to fight constituency boundary changes, proposed by the Boundary Commission for England. He also looks to the future and outlines how the Ribble Valley is set to benefit from huge investment.

In our Sports section David Fearnhead meets inspirational boxer Mickey Ellison and in our Food and Drink pages, we look to the past to re-discover a healthy super-food – bone broth. Ian and Emma at Gazegill Organics share their recipe and reveal that a leading Manchester City footballer is among their many customers, who are discovering the nutritional benefits of broth! Also delving into the past is Andrew Stachulski, who discovers the work of Edmundson Buck, who brought the Forest of Bowland to life through his historic photographs.

The Perfect Kitchen & Living Area

When a family from Bolton decided to extend their home and create a large open plan kitchen and living area, they turned to David Walthall at Stuart Frazer to create the perfect space.

They’d been aware of Stuart Frazer for years, seeing their kitchens in glossy magazines and when they came to extend their home they visited two high-end kitchen retailers but chose Stuart Frazer based on the SieMatic product which they believed to be superior and the ideas designer David Walthall presented.

They were immediately impressed with David’s design skills and his painstaking attention to detail. Nothing was too much trouble for him and they were delighted when he also advised on other key elements of the extension, especially the feature windows which he turned from standard Velux windows to a striking column design.

These windows perfectly mirror the twin island design of the kitchen. With symmetry being key throughout, the couple who are keen cooks, chose Gaggenau appliances for their aesthetics and cooking capabilities. Clean line design was important and David delivered this whilst adding family friendly features such as the casual dining option with the breakfast bar.

For interior design and the living room furniture the family turned to Gail Marsden interior design.

A key part of the living area was a fabulous feature media wall which the couple saw in Stuart Frazer’s Manchester showroom. David designed this to incorporate a TV sound system and fire.

The end result is a stunning space that the family are delighted with, “we can’t recommend David or Stuart Frazer highly enough. They were absolutely fantastic. The finished space is incredible.”

INVESTING IN THE FUTURE

The purpose of the boundary review is to distribute Parliamentary constituencies and the number of electors, more evenly across the UK.

But the proposals have sparked fierce debate and met with strong criticism, not least from Ribble Valley Borough Council (RVBC) leader Stephen Atkinson, who revealed that Ribble Valley Council has submitted alternative proposals.

The current proposals would see wards such as Whalley and Painter Wood, Wiswell and Barrow, Salthill, St Mary’s, Sabden, Primrose, Littlemoor, Chatburn, East Whalley, Read and Simonstone and Edisford and Low Moor move into a new ‘Pendle and Clitheroe’ constituency while Preston Rural East and North, Samlesbury and Walton, Walton-le-Dale East and West and Bamber Bridge East and West would move into the Ribble Valley constituency.

Parliamentary constituency boundary changes that will see numerous Ribble Valley wards, including those in Clitheroe and Whalley, move into Pendle, are set to be implemented by the Boundary Commission for England.

“All through this we have fought to keep the Ribble Valley together,” he said. “The Chief Executive, with input from myself and the leader of the opposition have written to the Boundary Commission to express our concerns. We are losing half the Ribble

East back to South Ribble. We are confident that they will consider this, although we are now at the second and final stage.

“Having said that, the Boundary Commission’s original proposal kept Clitheroe with Barrow and Wiswell in the Ribble Valley and we have asked them to reconsider this option.”

Cllr Atkinson said it was important for people to remember that the Parliamentary constituency boundaries were not associated with Ribble Valley Borough Council boundaries, and that the council offices would remain in Clitheroe and day to day services would remain unaffected.

The final boundary recommendations will be announced in July 2023. If the current proposal goes ahead, Ribble Valley and Pendle and Clitheroe constituencies will be represented by two MPs: “Clitheroe will be in the new Pendle and Clitheroe constituency – but the irony is there is almost a mountain (Pendle Hill) in between. It’s ridiculous!”

“Traditionally the Ribble Valley within the

current system has been too small for two MPs – having just one really helps. Voting turnout tends to be much higher because voters feel much more connected with their representative so it’s much better – that’s how democracy works.”

He said the Boundary Commission proposals had created a certain amount of nervousness within the borough as it appeared the

Government was keen to adopt a one-tier local government system to create large unitary councils encompassing up to half a million people – something that has already been seen in North Yorkshire: “The area spans from Scarborough to Skipton – there’s no local democracy.

“We know that unitary councils work in cities but when you get into rural areas –and 80 per cent of Lancashire is rural –there’s no one to fight for the local community as unitary councils represent huge areas.

“While the proposal is not on the cards at the moment it’s our job to keep it off the table. Indeed, the last time it was proposed over 10,000 people signed a petition to keep the Ribble Valley independent and I made our position clear to Rishi Sunak who, at the time, was Local Government Minister.

“In the Ribble Valley we have shown that the two-tier model most definitely works in small rural communities. During the pandemic RVBC established community hubs and helped with the vaccination programme.

We distributed over £30m to help local businesses and households and we continue to help with Household Support Grants.”

As leader of RVBC, he said there was much optimism going into 2023: “I am extremely positive and I think we have done a great job in Ribble Valley.

“We have the lowest Council Tax in the north of England, we don’t charge for green bins – so the average Band D household in the Ribble Valley is £800 better off over the last four years. With the cost-of-living crisis households are finding it really hard, so we are conscious that that money must go to them not the council.

“At the same time, we deliver the best refuse service in Lancashire, we are the only council delivering weekly collections and we have a vibrant economy where in other boroughs, we see serious deprivation.”

He revealed that RVBC had recently paid off all debts and also had significant reserves: “From an economic point of view, we are the most prosperous area in Lancashire and we are now talking about a major programme of investment.”

He said RVBC should receive £1.97m from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) over a period of three years. The UKSPF distributes monies to areas that identify needs at local level. Another £400,000 has also been allocated for rural areas within the borough.

“Improving our public spaces improves the experience of our visitors and residents so we are looking at a number of schemes.

“We have had local consultations with

businesses and community organisations within the Ribble Valley and many have put ideas forward. The council will then have to decide what will happen, but we are not at that stage yet.”

Having come under criticism about the number of new homes built in the Ribble Valley, he said the Government had given councils a five-year housing target with an ultimatum that if the target wasn’t achieved, the council could lose control over its Local Housing Plan: “The reason so many houses have been built is to get some level of control. I can understand some people being upset but there is an upside and downside to this.

He said among the suggestions were the improvement of Clitheroe Market and the creation of an outdoor event space in Longridge. He also added that the council was mindful that Clitheroe’s swimming pool at Roefield faced challenges, having been built in 1974 and would eventually need to be replaced at a cost of many millions.

“It will come to the end of its life and at that stage we will look at alternative options as to whether to repair or build on the current location or otherwise.”

Speaking about the need to improve some of the footpaths in and around Clitheroe, he said he understood residents’ concerns: “They want investment, but they generally don’t care where the money comes from. The County Council may spend some money on improving footpaths – it is their asset and responsibility. But we will help where we can.”

“The upside is that house building has been one of the main drivers of the local economy. Alongside the expensive, four and five-bedroom properties built we have also seen the number of affordable properties increase by 500 in the last four years, which is incredible.

“People want to live in the Ribble Valley and they bring their disposable income here which is good, but it is also to the detriment of other towns, which is the downside. The Government really needs to think where this development needs to happen.”

Reflecting on 2022 and moving into the new year he concluded: “We are not perfect and we may not get everything right. We are a traditional Conservative council and we have done our best and the private sector has also delivered – for example Holmes Mill in Clitheroe, which is wonderful.

“The Ribble Valley is a great place to be and people know that, they are proud to live here.” n

A contemporary kitchen for a newly built farmhouse

Andrew and Amelia had the chance to build the perfect house and have their dream kitchen when they bought a house in Grimsargh, knocked it down and built a farmhouse in it’s place.

They visited Kitchen Design Centre in Blackburn after seeing one of their kitchens in a glossy magazine. They were immediately impressed with Showroom Manager Will Hustler and after showing him their architect’s plans, knew he could create the perfect space for them. He understood their vision and the contemporary look they were after.

Having replaced old conservatories with new structures, two delighted homeowners explain why they chose Whalley Home Improvements to carry out the work

Aretired Ribble Valley couple living in Wilpshire are thrilled with their newly built conservatory that has transformed the way they live.

Mike and Dot Millward moved into their 1930s detached bungalow eight years ago but were unhappy with the conservatory that had been built as an add-on between the garage and the house.

With a polycarbonate roof, it was not ideal as former Blackburn Museum curator Mike explains: “We put up with it for a while –in summer it was over 55 degrees and in winter it would get down to -10! So eventually we made the decision to replace it.”

Another very happy customer, who lives in a 1930s three-bedroom, semi-detached house in Great Harwood, has been similarly delighted with her new conservatory.

The house, built of Accrington brick, previously had a conservatory extension off the kitchen and, like Mike and Dot’s original conservatory, it had a polycarbonate roof and was poorly insulated.

The homeowner wanted the conservatory to feel more like a ‘proper room’: “The conservatory was long and quite narrow,” she explains. “I have a lovely terrace at the back and wanted to be able to look out over that.”

Her first step was to discuss her aims with Emma: “I had a good idea of what I wanted to achieve. Emma was really efficient and came up with a great design. She is really knowledgeable about each and every product.”

The old conservatory was replaced with a well-insulated, new solid roof system, new windows and French doors were created so that the householder could walk out onto the terrace in the south-west facing garden that has fencing with lots of greenery: “I can now enjoy the afternoon sunshine in my new conservatory, which really is lovely.

TIME TO PLAN YOUR GARDEN

January is a great time to get organised in the garden and make plans for the year ahead

With the new year, you can start planning what plants you might like to add or seeds you might like to grow in spring and what materials you need to do this, plus what kind of budget you have.

Gardens can cost, so try to keep things simple and where possible reuse, recycle or come up with money saving ideas that can help you create the garden of your dreams regardless of resources or space.

So, thrifty tip for the month is to get your tools sorted before the gardening season gets into full swing. You don’t need masses of tools just a few good ones – the best you can afford –or keep an eye out for bargains in second hand shops making sure that the metal parts are in good shape. You will need a good spade (preferably with a wooden handle that comes up to your hip in height), a fork and a hoe. Plus, a pair of secateurs is essential, as is a watering can. If you have space a wheelbarrow is also handy. If you are container gardening then a hand trowel and fork are a must. The rest you can improvise – pencils for dibbers, yoghurt pots and plastic food trays for seeds

and cuttings, large plastic bottles for cloches. You can also make tools last longer by wiping them with a rag dabbed with oil after use. Being snow-aware in the garden can not only help with the longevity of equipment, it can also stop extensive plant damage which means you don’t have to spend money on repairs or replacements. Advice from the Royal Horticultural Society is to shake or brush heavy snow from conifers, shrubs and hedges to prevent branches breaking. When it comes to turf and borders a covering of snow provides insulation from the cold so it’s best left in place. You should avoid walking on frozen and snow-covered lawns as this damages the grass.

Vicky Brown tells Meena McDonald how well-designed and expertly chosen flooring can totally transform our living and work spaces

Astrong passion for the flooring sector combined with a powerful sense of integrity is at the heart of what drives Vicky Brown at Gainsborough Flooring. From the tender age of 11 she’s been an integral part of the family business, absorbing and learning from the sidelines. Top of her list

has always been the customer and delivering flooring that delights and excites them.

Vicky says: “It is all about honesty and giving the customer what they want. My role is to inspire and stimulate each customer with the eclectic range of products we have. We listen very carefully to customers’ ideas and consider the creative design features

and style they are wanting to create, along with where the space is and the practicalities of how it is used.”

Providing choices and suggesting alternatives is key to selecting the perfect flooring. One of Vicky’s favourite things is to throw in curve ball choices, often totally wacky ones. But with her intuitiveness, knowledge and creativity she suggests products she genuinely believes could work, and what’s always amazed her is the number of customers who go with the curve ball choice!

Working closely with interior designers and having a keen eye on social media platforms such as Instagram means Vicky is always on trend. Social media plays a major role in influencing customers who want to create the amazing styles they see, adding their own unique and personal touches to it.

The trend currently is more towards the practical Luxury Vinyl Tiles (LVTs) throughout most of the downstairs with a touch of luxury carpet in the lounge. For the stairs and landing customers are generally opting for a hard-wearing carpet for durability, then invariably they want comfort underfoot, especially in the

bedrooms where they most like to feel their feet sink into a deep pile carpet.

Once customers have selected their choices, they’re encouraged to take them home and see how they look in situ, as varying lighting and different times of the day can have a huge impact on colours.

Customers are regularly amazed that what they liked in the showroom doesn’t create the desired look in their home.

The most rewarding commission Vicky had was a gentleman living with his elderly mum who openly admitted he had little idea, other than some colour preferences of berry colours and a hatred of flowers. Vicky was entrusted to choose the flooring for each room as long as it flowed throughout

the house. He absolutely loved the end result, even the daring tartan she laid in his main lounge!

The family business has been established over 50 years working across the country with the majority of customers based in the North West and Manchester. One road in Lytham has over 20 customers which is true testament to Gainsborough Flooring’s service. The team work very closely with interior designers, kitchen, bathroom and fireplace companies and new home builders to ensure a seamless installation between all trades to meet customers’ deadlines.

The team also take on a considerable number of commercial projects working with educational institutions, NHS services, the hospitality and retail sectors. One of the most obscure commercial commissions was to floor a play pirate ship for a local nursery. A rustic wood look was used for the ship’s decking then a bright blue in the shape of puddles to resemble water. The end result was fantastic! n

For the stairs and landing Brockway Rare Breeds Loop, made from pure, undyed wool provided a luxurious look whilst providing a durable surface.

Liaising with other contractors was critical to the smooth running of the project.

Gordon was extremely impressed with the professionalism, flexibility and consideration shown by the Gainsborough team, fitting in with the family’s timescales rather than their own, as well as keeping them informed and involved.

CREATING THE

WOW FACTOR

Gordon and Liz Warnock recently completed major renovations to the home they’ve lived in for nearly 25 years.

With a sizeable kitchen extension, a striking new summer room, opening up the entrance hallway to their home, plus a new staircase, there was considerable scope for some truly exciting flooring choices.

Following some online research and discovering a feature on Gainsborough Flooring in a local glossy lifestyle magazine, they called into their showroom.

Both Gordon and Liz were astounded with what they were presented with. The back of the house was extended to create a magnificent sociable space in their spacious

Gordon and Liz were also extremely keen to create a feature by expanding their entrance hallway and the natural light and impressive space made Karndean Kaleidoscope KAL13 the perfect choice to create the amazing wow factor they were looking for.

Karndean Kaleidoscope explores a new world of unique patterns and shapes to create three-dimensional effects. Initially it confused the couple’s five-year old grandson, who thought he was stepping on an uneven floor!

The newly renovated summer room created a wonderfully peaceful space which was fully utilised during the summer and autumn. As Gordon commented: “It’s just so lovely and relaxing watching nature and chatting, rather than sitting in front of the television!”

To complement the walls and the natural light

Gordon concluded: “It has completely changed the way we live and we are absolutely delighted with what we’ve achieved. The family spends much more time together. The wow factor created by the hallway tops it off completely with friends unbelievably impressed with what we have created.”

So, what’s next on the list? Another sitting room and all the bedrooms which will need to be updated in the near future. There’s nothing holding back the creativity of Gordon and Liz! n

A recent project Timberlook manufactured for was for a Tudor-style property in Wrea Green. Part of a mock Tudor housing development – the house hadn’t had its windows replaced since the 90s.

The current homeowners were determined to breathe life into the house and began a year-long restoration to create the picture postcard property that sits there today. Before the renovation, the house featured dark, heavy and unmaintained wooden windows. These were replaced

It’s exciting planning a home renovation project but it can also feel daunting when faced with a plethora of products.

The beautifully illustrated labels for these St Eval candles were designed by a talented third-year BA (Hons) Illustration student. The designs embody the nature-connected essence of St Eval candles and symbolise the important social messages in their themes.

St Eval are delighted that, through support from their customers and network of stockists, they were able to donate an incredible £6,251 to anti-slavery charity Unseen at the end of 2022. Furthermore, as this donation was sent during the ‘Big

Give’ campaign, this was then match funded to £12,502. This significant donation will support Unseen and help them continue their life-changing work.

temporal lobe) in the brain, they go into our memory banks where they are there to be recalled if we wish. However, for cer tain memories this doesn’t happen in the same way. The emotional brain is hard wired to keep us safe and the fight or flight response is a classic example of how it tries to do this.

The ability to move on can be really challenging and create daily stress and anxiety, challenges with sleep and even depression. The inability to leave the past in the past, coupled with the associated strong emotions, can be exhausting. It can affect your everyday life and hold you back from moving towards a happier and more positive future.

There are many instances when we cannot even remember the original incident that instilled the fear around a situation. Especially things that happened in childhood, when the emotional brain is less sophisticated and less able to rationalise situations.

What can you do?

The good news is that with the right support you can work through emotions that are linked to past events. Every week of the year, thousands of young people with a passion for their sport are transported around the country by their parents for training or competitions. Apart from their own dedication and hard work, it is the sacrifice of an army of willing volunteers and coaches supporting them that is vital to propel them to future success in their chosen sport.

One such local group hoping to compete internationally is the Fylde Coast Rhythmic Gymnastics Junior Group comprising 14-year-old Evie Bayes, Tallulah Crabtree, 13, Lucy Taylor, 13, Chloe Magee, 13, Alex Marshall, 13 and Lottie Cahill, 13. Four of the gymnasts, Lucy, Evie, Chloe and Tallulah, earned English and British Championship titles earlier this year. As a team, they are a formidable force.

As with many other sports, rhythmic gymnastics does not receive any funding. It’s one of those chicken and egg situations –without success and medals, there are no grants, but it costs money to achieve success. These girls train together at least four times a week for up to 20 hours. To chase their dream, they jump on trains and have long

car journeys straight from school but never complain. It’s a story that’s played out all over the country by thousands of young people devoted to their sports.

THE LEGACY OF EDMUNDSON BUCK

A cooper who became a renowned photographer, Edmundson Buck brought the Ribble Valley and Forest of Bowland to life through his images. Andrew Stachulski delves into the past to find out more

We all have cause to muse, from time to time, on what would have happened if, ‘the road we did not take,’ as the poet Robert Frost put it. Yet in some cases, we only know of someone because he or she did decide on a dramatic change of direction. That is certainly true of Edmundson Buck, who rose from obscure origins to become

a great photographer and chronicler of our district, especially the Ribble and Hodder valleys. His final output was indeed prolific –a collection of 800 slides, formerly held at Clitheroe Library but now deposited in Lancashire Archives in Preston. Apart from the slides there were very many picture postcards, which I suspect a number of the older generation still possess today.

His dates are generally given as 1859-1941, though his exact date of birth is apparently uncertain. Very little is known about his father, although he was indeed mentioned on Edmundson’s marriage certificate of 1880.

He grew up with his mother at Roughlee in Pendle, and by the time of his marriage he was working as a cooper and living at Foulridge. The dramatic change came when the family,

now including two sons, moved to Clitheroe in the 1890s, and from 1901 Edmundson was living in Waddington Street where he remained for the rest of his life. Though he was still a cooper at first, by 1905 he was listed as a self-employed photographer. What led to this change is unknown. It must have become a true passion in those days, when there were none of the modern cameras and photographic techniques available today. Undoubtedly the proximity and beauty of the Ribble Valley and Forest of Bowland impressed him deeply.

Edmundson did not simply assimilate the slides as his own collection, he used them actively to promote knowledge and appreciation of our area throughout East Lancashire through many visits and illustrated talks. He truly appreciated the beauty which we often take for granted.

‘The Beautiful River Hodder from End to End’ was one title – thoroughly merited. His interests were wide-ranging, not only scenic. He captured snapshots of social history and interesting people and places too. There is for example a fine ‘take’ of the old ferry crossing on the Ribble at Dinckley, and interior shots of Bolton Hall, demolished in 1959, including the dining room and the room where King Henry VI was said to have sojourned. Another shot records the 250th anniversary of the independent chapel at Wymondhouses,

on the lower slopes of Pendle. Buck also lived through the construction of Stocks Reservoir and the flooding of Dalehead, and a number of his photos of the abandoned village, church and outlying farms now have considerable poignancy.

the quality of his work in the Lancashire. Evening Telegraph. Barry was planning a biography of Buck, but unfortunately died before he could complete this worthy project. His article bore fruit in another way, however, as it was spotted by Buck’s Canadian descendants, who had lost touch with that branch of the family. When they later visited Clitheroe, John Barry was able to give them a show based on Edmundson’s slides and they paid their respects at his grave. One hopes that another enthusiast may arise to take up what would be a most worthy biographic subject.

A perusal of Buck’s original notes, many of which are held in an excellent archive in Clitheroe Library, reveals a remarkable eye for detail and the depth of his research. His absorption with his subject matter was truly scholarly, yet always presented with a light, entertaining touch as people and places come alive as we read. Sometimes, indeed, he appears to query accepted opinion, as for instance in his notes about the origin of the River Ribble. He considers the source to lie on Wold Fell, whereas Malcolm Greenhalgh in his book on the Ribble states definitively that a spring on Gayle Moor, lying further east, is the true source.

It’s always a fair question – what would we like to be remembered for? In Edmundson Buck’s case, there is no doubt. He left a photographic legacy which brings the Ribble Valley and Forest of Bowland alive to the viewer better than any geography or history lesson could, for which we should be truly grateful. n

As the world changes, so do family structures. The most traditional set-up is a husband and wife having children together, sharing matrimonial assets and having joint parental responsibility for the children. In the event of a relationship breakdown, they would file for divorce, relying upon the Matrimonial Causes Act to divide their assets and to share the child arrangements. If an agreement could not be reached to share child arrangements, either parent would be able to make an application to court and neither would need permission to make such application.

However, we are now seeing an increase of blended families where two separated families come together and form a new blended family with step-parents and step-children. Stepparents take on the role wholeheartedly, but often do so without formal parental responsibility. In day-to-day life this may

not be an obstacle, however when it comes to providing consent in either a school or medical arena, this can often lead to obstacles requiring only the biological parent or parent with parental responsibility being able to provide that level of consent. Step-parents can often become very emotionally attached to children, quite often raising children for many years as their own and if those relationships were to break down, the legal implication is somewhat different. It is not always possible to make an application to court for arrangements for the children – the parent without parental responsibility will need to seek permission to pursue that application.

WORKING TOWARDS AN AGREEMENT WITH YOUR FORMER PARTNER AND HAVING A FIRM COMMITMENT TO AVOID LITIGATION CAN SAVE YOU BOTH COSTS

There is also an increase in same sex couples conceiving children through fertility clinics. The advantage to using a clinic is that this is done following protocols and also providing advice on how the parents can have their names on the birth certificate, thereby providing them with parental responsibility. Where fertility clinics are not used, families are created

but not necessarily providing equal parental responsibility to both individuals who believe themselves to be parents. Whilst those couples may have found a route around a hurdle to become parents, it does not necessarily provide them with the legal standpoint, leaving one parent without any parental responsibility or rights, should the relationship break down.

Finally, for many couples that decide not to get married at all and choose a cohabiting relationship, there has always been a myth of the common-law spouse, but that myth is just that. Cohabiting couples do not have the benefit of the Matrimonial Causes Act and unless the name of the father is placed on the birth certificate, then he does not automatically have parental responsibility. This also leads to difficulties where parties share houses together and perhaps contribute unequally to the upkeep and the mortgage. Sadly, this means that the law that protects them is not family friendly and is the more commercial route under the Trusts of Land and Appointment of Trustees Act. n

IN THE SADDLE

As hot chocolate was made and Christmas lights twinkled, Chipping Pony Club members, parents and instructors have been keeping busy, writes Megan Conlan

Chipping Pony Club had a fab team in the Winter League Show Jumping which came fifth out of 21 teams! The Winter League consists of a series of competitions in disciplines such as show jumping and dressage, where members of all ages and abilities compete to qualify for the National Spring Festival. These competitions allow members to continue putting their training to good use in the colder months, as well as keeping up the horses’ fitness and the members’ competitive spirit!

Members also had the opportunity to gain important skills from trained UKCC Level 3 British dressage judge Barbara Ainsworth, in

a Dressage Test Preparation Workshop. This was a great opportunity for members to learn what dressage judges look for and how to gain points, in time for the upcoming dressage Winter League competitions.

Training Clinic with Blackburn and District Branch of the Pony Club. A great time was had by all and by the end members were able to demonstrate their real knack for the fast-paced technique which this discipline requires.

Chipping held their annual wreath-making workshop fundraiser last month. Guided by PC mum and committee member, Sarah Fishwick, people who attended were given all the materials they needed and got to work. Every person had a lovely time creating their own wreaths and adding their own personal touches, as well as having a good natter!

Members braved the weather for a cross country training session at Somerford Park, Cheshire, where members could revitalise what they learnt over summer at the annual camp and other cross-country lessons. Under the watchful eye of David Llewellyn, members made excellent progress using the incredible facilities that Somerford has to offer, with a huge variety of fences to work with.

To add another discipline to the list, members also had a Mounted Games

Next on the calendar is Chipping Pony Club’s annual Awards Evening, where members are rewarded for all their hard work over the year, with trophies for each discipline as well as ones for tack and turnout (all the boot shining is worth it) and improvement over the year. The Christmas rally ended events for 2022. With a rather sparkly twist, members dressed up themselves and their horses (if they’ll allow) in the most fabulous, Christmassy outfits they could muster! Looking to the future, 2023 will bring lots more training, fun and competitions and not forgetting the club’s classic bingo fundraiser night at Chipping Village Hall which is always so much fun –I even came back from university especially for it last year! n

We all saw the way Qatar were keen to impress the world in their hosting of the football World Cup. Well, the same can be said for the recent growth of horse racing in the Gulf States during winter.

Over the last few years Racing Festivals have become big business in Dubai, Qatar and now Bahrain. We have a group of local owners who own a horse called Digital and he is in training with Roger Fell at Nawton near York. We have decided to send Digital out to Bahrain for the winter and expect him to run in five races there during December, January and February.

they are very keen to encourage UK-based owners and horses to run in Bahrain during our winter. So much so that there are financial incentives to go (£12,500 contribution to hotels and flights for owners) and they cover

HELP IN TIMES OF CRISIS…

As we head into the New Year, volunteers at Ribble Valley Food Bank are bracing themselves for an upsurge of people in need of help

In the last year

Ribble Valley Food Bank has given out more than 1550 food parcels which equates to helping more than 145 individuals and families in need –and going into the New Year it is anticipated demand will be much higher due to the rising cost of living combined with the fuel crisis.

Pete Simm, a former Lancashire police officer for 30 years, is the outgoing manager

of the Ribble Valley Food Bank: “Over the past year I have really had my eyes opened. People think the Ribble Valley would never need a food bank as it is perceived as a very affluent area, but like all areas we have people who have issues and are in need of help, often through no fault of their own.

“And, with all that is going on nationally and globally, this is going to get much worse before it gets better. Don’t think there is a stereotypical person who comes to the food bank. We have professionals who may have lost their job, people who are going through a divorce and find themselves with no money and need a short-term fix. We are not here to judge – just to help. I am not comparing us to Blackburn or Burnley, but there are people here who also have personal crises and need support and guidance.

“What we sometimes find is that some people need support in their moment of need, and we just help them get back on their feet.”

When Pete retired from the police force

18 months ago, he found himself wanting to continue to help others: “I felt I wanted to give something back to the community,” he explains.

“Working at Ribble Valley Food Bank has been a very humbling experience, but it has also been very rewarding too, it is a wonderful charity that is helping often very vulnerable people.”

For the past year Pete headed up a team of 83 willing and enthusiastic volunteers, who give their time so generously, acting as drivers, sorters, packers, welcomers and trained advisers, who can direct people when they need more than food.

“While we are a Christian-led organisation, we have many different roles – we help people with food but we also signpost them to other agencies if the need is there,” says Pete. “It may be they need help from the Citizen’s Advice Bureau or a debt-led agency. We do whatever we can to help.”

Supported by Tesco, Booths and Sainsbury supermarkets, like most official food banks nationwide, the Clitheroe and Longridge branches of the RVFB also rely heavily on food and monetary donations from the general public.

“Each supermarket gives shoppers the opportunity to donate some of their weekly shopping to the food bank, at donation points within the supermarkets,” says Pete,

who points out that the RVFB also has a Clitheroe warehouse.

Volunteer drivers then drop off the items of food at the Clitheroe and Longridge food banks in readiness for the sorters and packers to start work putting together food parcels. Items most needed for the food banks include:

• Tinned ham and any tinned meat products

• Longlife milk

• Tinned custard

• Sponge puddings that can be microwaved

• Sanitary and cleaning products

• Nappies

• Baby milk

Having been with the RVFB for the past year, Pete has seen a gradual increase in the numbers using the facility: “We were expecting an upsurge and particularly in the last eight weeks we have seen a noticeable increase. We are coping with it, but we are still totally reliant on the donations we receive.

“We are extremely lucky here in the Ribble Valley to have people who are very generous donors. It’s quite overwhelming and we would struggle to function without them.”

People in need of help from RVFB, can be referred in a number of ways, including:

• GP

• Job Centre

• Schools

• Social Services

• Children’s wellbeing services

• Churches

Like most UK-wide food banks the RVFB operates under the Trussell Trust which has an online system that enables those referred, to claim a voucher that in turn, enables them to go to their local food bank to claim whatever they need in terms of food and provisions.

“Each parcel is tailor made – it may be for an individual or for a family with four children. If there is a baby, we will take this into account and provide whatever is needed,” adds Pete, who during his time in Clitheroe formed a valuable collaboration with two Clitheroe Market greengrocers, Walkers and Burneys, whereby people eligible to claim a food parcel from the food bank, also receive a voucher in exchange for fresh fruit and vegetables.

“Obviously the food bank can only provide long-life, non-perishables. So, when I first started, this was something I felt very strongly about – giving families the chance to access fresh fruit and vegetables, and it has been a great success.”

The Trussell Trust supports food banks across the country with logistics, administration, equipment and training.

It also sends out weekly online updates as to how national trends and statistics could affect the work the food banks do.

Trussell Trust regional manager Gareth Duffield confirmed that there had been a

recent upturn in the number of people seeking help, saying: “There has been an increase in the Ribble Valley and nationally, one in five people going to food banks are now in work. In the past, food banks were seen as being for people on benefits but now people in work are having to use them and that includes communities within the Ribble Valley.”

He said the team of volunteers at RVFB had risen to the challenge and were doing a fantastic job, but going into 2023, it is predicted that times will get significantly harder: “While we are pleased that the Chancellor is increasing benefits in line with inflation, that isn’t going to happen until April so we are concerned how some people will survive – in the mean time we will be calling for short term support.” n

Alumna Professor Sophie Scott CBE, undertook the o cial ribbon cutting ceremony and spoke about how her love of Science began at Westholme. “My Westholme Principal was Dr Bond, and she used to teach chemistry. It was my favourite lesson. She was an inspirational role model.”

From humble beginnings To stunning successes

spectacular large-scale exhibition has been created to showcase Westholme’s heritage in the foyer of the School’s Croston eatre.

e exhibition takes viewers on a journey through the School’s history from inception at 1923 to key milestones in each decade, right up to current day. Historic artefacts are proudly on display including the original founder’s writing desk (Miss Singleton), war medals from Arthur Rouse, the second Principal, and vintage memorabilia spanning the decades.

e exhibition will be on display for ve years and will become a talking point for many visitors to the School, particularly at a range of celebratory centenary events Westholme have planned for 2023. e rst of such events are a series of Alumni Centenary lunches which Old Westholmians have been invited to, hosted by Mrs Lillian Croston, Westholme’s fourth Principal. 100 years of Westholme will be celebrated by students who will enjoy a Centenary Party day on 19 April 2023 to mark the momentuous anniversary.

In 1923, two young women in Blackburn were unable to nd teaching vacancies. e Local Education Authorities of Blackburn and surrounding towns were so short of funds that as teachers died or retired they were unable to replace them. Miss Emily Singleton and Miss Ivy Richmond viewed their dilemma with stunning logic; if they could not nd a school to employ them, they would have to make their own! And there we began, on 19 April 1923, in the local Wesleyan Chapel. Miss Emily Singleton and Miss Ivy Richmond opened the doors of their school and Westholme was born.

a local charity has just launched an art calendar in order to raise awareness and much-needed funds to support the valuable work it does

Arespected Clitheroe-based charity, which has for many years been supporting the mental health and wellbeing of families across the Ribble Valley, has published a delightful calendar following a Draw Clitheroe initiative earlier this year.

Draw Clitheroe saw artists throughout the town centre creating their own pieces of individual artwork. Fast forward and the Foundation for Ribble Valley Families (FRVF) have used 13 of the entries in a 2023 calendar.

Following the Draw Clitheroe event, the

foundation’s Business Development Manager, Dilys Day, saw the opportunity to make more of the artwork: “It seemed like an ideal opportunity to take something that had been such a mindful, family-friendly initiative and turn it into a fund-raiser.”

The Draw Clitheroe event, which is to be repeated in 2023, was the idea of Katherine Rogers of the Platform Gallery and Charlotte Eccles who has lifestyle and gift store Raffia in Clitheroe and who is also a member of the Chamber of Commerce. They were both approached by the foundation with a request to make the calendar.

Helping young people and families cope with mental health issues,

Helen Durrant, from the FRVF, adds: “They both thought it was a superb idea and a great way to acknowledge the popularity of the event.”

The foundation then chose 12 images for each month and one for the cover and approached The Jenny Press in Clitheroe asking them to print the calendar: “They were an obvious choice as we wanted to keep it local as the foundation has a base in Clitheroe, and many of the families we support are from the town.”

“The key to success is early intervention as you can often give anyone suffering from low mood or anxiety the tools to stop those feelings from escalating. People can self-refer into the service via the website or though their GP and we also have a GP on the board of trustees,” adds Helen.

FRVF aims to take pressure off GPs in the area by acting early when people approach them for help: “There has definitely been an upturn in the number of referrals particularly in young people,” explains Helen.

“During the pandemic support was limited to being online. The foundation helps young people aged from 10 to 18, who have been particularly disrupted over that time and that has resulted in more anxiety issues.

“Older family members also seem to have suffered in that some of them are

I was born and Corrie was my dad’s favourite programme. Little did I think a few decades on I would be rubbing shoulders with him, but also that he would become such a dear friend.

Another event in the Speaker’s Apartments was Lancashire Day and it was tremendous to see business and civic leaders join together to celebrate everything about this great county. The day started with me being grilled alongside Katherine Fletcher MP, by the BBC’s Graham Liver. I have done so many interviews over 30 years with Radio Lancashire and I pay tribute to its social service in informing the county about local and national issues and giving MPs an opportunity to explain what they are doing in their constituencies.

In Mellor I was delighted to visit a new luxury lodge venture called Everything Retreat, the brainchild of local businesswoman Louise Monk. Her enthusiasm and imagination is evident in each of the detached lodges. We all know how idyllic the Ribble Valley is, but now tourists will have the opportunity to hop from the M6 junction and within 15 minutes be relaxing in the ultimate luxury!

I was joined by a former Clitheroe Mayor in London to witness another

acting legend take to the stage and be interviewed by

Dame Judi Dench was amazing as her personality and experience shone through. Her talent is huge and her bubbly persona was on full display as Kevin and I chatted to her afterwards in her dressing room. She is one of Britain’s truly great actors and it was lovely to tell her how much I enjoyed her portrayal of M!

Finally, I was over the moon to see Clitheroe recognised as one of the top 15 places to shop. It is fantastic that the retailers, the market, coffee bar s, barbers, pubs and restaurants alongside estate agents and shops small and large, are offering such a wonderful service. They have gone through much but have bounced back strong and they deserve our support.

With 2022 behind us and 2023 knocking at the door, I will be spending time with family and friends in the Ribble Valley – the area I call home, and I’ll be raising a glass to my friends whom I love and to the future, which I pray brings happiness and good health to us all.

THE TRUE COST OF A DIY DIVORCE

Since the introduction of the ‘no fault’ divorce law in April 2022, there has been a gradual rise in couples seeking to complete the divorce process without the assistance of legal advisors, in what is commonly referred to as a ‘Do It Yourself Divorce’.

Firstly, whilst the process to apply for a divorce is more straightforward than previously; as with many official documents, it’s easy to make mistakes or miss important parts, which can lead to potential errors and delays in your divorce coming through.

Perhaps, more importantly, omitting to tell the court that there are financial matters to be dealt with could be fatal.

There is also a common misconception that once a DIY divorce is completed, that’s it.

However, financial matters and child arrangements are unfortunately not automatically dealt with within the divorce process. Separate steps are needed to officially finalise these. If financial matters are not dealt with in the form of a financial settlement, it could lead to claims made

against you by your spouse at a later date; impacting significantly on your finances, whether that be in terms of property, business interests, pensions or inheritance.

It’s now just four months since the first guests arrived at Everything Retreat and each have brought with them their own reasons to visit the Ribble Valley. There has been a proposal of marriage, a babymoon, a bridesmaids weekend away, a long distance romance meeting half way and more than a few ‘first night away since…’

The guest book and feedback reviews have been 100 per cent positive with everyone saying they will be back. In fact, the top returner is this very weekend back in another lodge as he and his wife want to try out each one before settling on a favourite – and he travels from Longridge! His feeling is that even though it’s just 20 minutes away from their beautiful home and businesses, they feel like its another world – a brief escape – and chance to connect.

The diary for the past two weeks though has been extreme. Phase two is now complete and open for business! There is a private bar and

room with private kitchen (under construction) that will allow groups who take over the retreat to host their own meetings and events. The kitchen design has Lisa Goodwin Allen from Northcote ticking off her thoughts and desires for this first-class cooking space that will offer chefs the opportunity to cook at your private party.

It really can be whatever you want it to be! From the moment you pick up the phone the concierge service will swing into action and make everything possible – as long as its legal! Flowers sir? Dinner at a local restaurant? Golf at a premier course? Guided walks and tours of the valley? Absolutely.

Ribble Valley Tourism Association met for a tour and talk this week and all again agreed it is a totally new experience to bring even more folk into the glorious Ribble Valley. It’s hard to say exactly why this is the case, perhaps the rising cost of living, but I’m sadly seeing an increasing amount of cases on my desk where coercive and financial control are playing a role in the breakdown of people’s relationships. I also regret to say that my experience as a divorce lawyer informs me that the festive period will have been especially difficult for the victims of this type of abuse.

The festive period can be so special. The decorations, the films, the songs, and the fact that, even for just a few weeks in the year, everyone seems to be just that little bit nicer to each other. It can then be particularly hurtful to think that your partner is constantly putting you down, depriving you of your independence and controlling you and your time when others have been sharing affections beneath the mistletoe. If you find yourself in that position, you’d be justified in considering that you may be a victim of coercive control.

“It’s going to be super cool!” she says. “So, if couples choose to marry at the 200-year-old ‘Lonesome Pine’ within the woodland garden, or at any of the other lovely wedding locations on the estate, drinks can be served there.”

Each year Browsholme Hall, which is the Grade I listed ancestral home of the Parker family, invests in new projects to keep the buildings and the grounds in tip-top shape – future-proofing the historic house for generations to come.

Built in 1507, Browsholme has been well and truly brought into the 21st century by current family members Robert and Amanda Parker, daughter Eleanor and son Roland.

Last year saw the creation of a ‘woodland garden’, which will eventually extend to 10 acres, for which a selection of beautiful trees and shrubs, including rhododendron, magnolia, cherry and acers have been chosen. Fifty-six couples who got married at Browsholme came to the first tree-planting ceremonies in 2022, celebrating their marriage and the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee #greencanopy. In 2023, for the King’s Coronation, this will be repeated to create a hazel and walnut orchard overlooking the lake.

“This is proving to be so popular!” says Eleanor. “We have had couples who got married here 10 years ago contacting us to see if they can plant a tree in the woodland garden.”

The mobile bar will also be used at other events held at Browsholme throughout the year. Coming up are a series of wedding showcases and informal drop-in days, workshops and a two-day gastronomy tour conducted by Bowland and Bay.

Westholme INSPIRED Sixth form Drama students toured nurseries across the North West to perform their Christmas adaptation of The Three Little Pigs, aptly entitled The Christmas Tail! The children discovered that the Big Bad Wolf, called Bob, is not bad at all and simply wants to make friends. The message of being kind to others was brilliantly conveyed by the talented students.

TENNIS STARS

Stonyhurst’s junior tennis team was named the LTA Youth Schools (Division 2) North Regional Tennis Champions after a fiercely contested tournament following their victories in the Lancashire Final. The team, comprising four of Stonyhurst’s talented tennis players, William, Lucas, Alvaro and Jaime, began their journey to victory earlier this year. The LTA North Regional Finals, saw Stonyhurst’s team travel to the John Charles Centre for Sport in Leeds with their coach Director of Tennis, David Shaw, who said after their victory: ‘‘The win is a credit to the dedication of our pupils and coaches and the continued investment in tennis at Stonyhurst. The boys have gained a lot of experience and their attitude to the competition has been exemplary.”

ANNUAL PRIZEGIVING

Pupils, parents and staff celebrated Oakhill’s 44th Annual Prize Giving in the school’s Sports Hall. Marc Pugh, former professional footballer and online health coach, presented the prizes to returning and current pupils, in front of parents past and present and their families, invited guests including the Clitheroe Town Mayor and Mayoress, Deputy Mayor and Mayoress of the Ribble Valley, governors and members of Oakhill’s Baron family. Following the proceedings there was a buffet which provided an excellent opportunity for parents, staff and pupils to meet once more.

DRAGON’S DEN

Burnley College Students wowed three international business entrepreneurs at a Dragon’s Den style event which could see some of them receive real-life investment. The trio, including the pioneer behind the Modern Milkman delivery service, Paul White, and an international serial tech entrepreneur, saw presentations from more than a dozen groups of students. Ideas included everything from artificial intelligence-based online medical diagnosis to an app for college students to find jobs. Paul says it’s about ensuring as an innovator you’re always listening: “There are so many amazing entrepreneurs out there who just don’t get the chance to develop their ideas.”

BUCKINGHAM PALACE TO DUNSOP BRIDGE

Thorneyholme RC Primary School in Dunsop Bridge were honoured to take delivery of one of the 350 trees forming the spectacular Tree of Trees which was such a prominent feature of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations. Staff and pupils joined local dignitaries to plant a rowan tree in the school grounds –a poignant reminder of the late Queen’s connection to the Forest of Bowland – much of which is owned by the monarch via the Duchy of Lancaster’s estate. The tree becomes part of the living legacy in honour of Her Majesty, joining over a million trees already planted across the UK as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy.

ADULT STUDENT NOMINATION

Once stuck in a cycle of drug addiction, Lancashire Adult Learning student Andrea Horrocks has managed to turn her life around, resulting in her nomination for National Adult Student of the Year Award. Andrea’s story is a journey of personal affliction and tragic loss but also remarkable recovery through continued growth and learning at LAL alongside her own grit and determination. Andrea now runs a recovery home in Chorley called WatchUsGrow and is giving back to the community.

BRITISH CITIZEN AWARD

Stonyhurst is proud to announce that Head Boy, Dilip, was recently awarded the British Citizen Youth Award during a medal ceremony at the Palace of Westminster. The British Citizen Youth Award is designed to recognise the individual endeavours of young people who are positively impacting their communities, helping charities, or undertaking exceptional activities in support of others. The event was hosted by Dame Mary Perkins and Kimberly Wyatt who are patrons of the award. Dilip said: “The education we receive at Stonyhurst both inside the classroom and through co-curricular activities, allows us to go into the world and make the most of our talents and skills. I spoke at the ceremony about the importance of being men and women for others and of the Jesuit pupil profile values that are so prevalent throughout a Stonyhurst education.”

At Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall (SMH) Prep School children enjoy an extra two years to extend the adventure of childhood, as they mature and progress to Stonyhurst College at the age of 13 –enabling them to embark on a senior education with a greater sense of wellbeing and personal confidence.

“There has, in the past, been traditional entry points to Stonyhurst including nursery, Year 7, Year 9 and Year 12,” explains Headmaster Fr Christopher Cann, who joined SMH at the start of September.

“However, we are seeing more children coming to Stonyhurst in Year 5 – a move that is advantageous in many ways.

“Years 5 and 6 see pupils finish the primary stage, then Years 7 and 8 at SMH has a ‘middle school’ feel about it. These extra two years at SMH give pupils the chance to fully grow in personal confidence. They are at the top end of the prep school, which gives them time to mature and develop their personal leadership skills before they move up to the college for senior education. Nurtured in our Jesuit ethos and mission, they want to be ‘all they can be’ in a life of purpose, as young men and women for others.”

Parents are finding there are many advantages of entering SMH at Year 5.

Firstly, many parents know that their children are not ready to move to a senior school environment at 11. They are looking for another path to avoid this very stressful transition. Secondly, the prep school provides wrap-around care from 8am to 6pm making it excellent value for busy working parents and homework is done at school.

“The pupils at the top end of SMH in Years 7 and 8 are free to be themselves, to still live their childhood and have confidence in themselves and who they are as young teenagers. This is so important for their wellbeing and as a springboard for young adult life.”

James Dunne is the third generation of the Dunne family at the helm of successful Blackburn company Prestige Beds, writes Gail Bailey

Prestige Beds was founded in 1959 by James Dunne’s grandfather, after whom he was named:

“On leaving the RAF my grandad began working for a furniture company,” explains Operations Director James. “He wanted to begin his own business and noticed a gap in the market for a specialist bed company – and so Prestige Beds was born, the first of its kind in the country.”

The family-owned company has a proud heritage spanning more than six decades, and now has five stores including warehouses in Blackburn, Preston, Burnley and Hyndburn providing the North West with the same high level of service they have done for over half a century. This growth has meant an increase in staff and the company now employs 27 people across all their stores in sales as well as warehousing, deliveries and most recently their in-house marketing team.

After spending four years working as a driver James moved into sales and marketing before he progressed to his current role as Operations Director four years ago: “It has been a huge benefit to have worked ‘hands-on’ in the company from grass roots up and gain experience in all aspects of the business,” he says.

Prestige Beds still has the same ethos at its’ core that has enabled it to grow over the years into the success it is today: “My grandad ensured the business was customer centric. Our reputation is based on our unwavering focus on our customers

“My grandad introduced a free delivery service, which still stands today along with our team assembling beds in the room of choice and taking the old one away which is re-cycled. Consistency is absolutely key and maintaining high standards threads through the whole team – we have a very low turnover of staff and most of the team have been with us a number of years.”

James is obviously kept busy but outside of work has a huge passion for football and is a big fan of his beloved local club Blackburn Rovers: “We are proud to be in Blackburn and have been a long-standing corporate sponsor of the team and this season are happy to be commercial partners,” he says.

Prestige Beds are successful because they don’t stand still and James is always looking to the future: “We are launching our new website, which we’ve been working on for the last 18 months and further expansion is always at the forefront of our minds. We know there is a demand for high quality bed specialists in other towns and hope to further expand.”

In March this year Prestige Beds opened a store on Hyndburn Retail Park: “This was

initially a temporary outlet for us, and our first venture on a retail park. However, it has been so successful that we are now keeping the shop there!” James says.

Very much a family affair, James’ father Joe is Managing Director in the business and his younger brother now works in the sales department too.

PAPERLESS AIM

A Lancashire-based car dealer group is spearheading an environmental drive to make all its processes paperless and has already eliminated all but 95 per cent of its paper transactions and communications. Family-owned Bowker Motor Group’s paperless mission was pioneered by the group’s sales team in their BMW and MINI centres in Blackburn and Preston. The company’s aftersales department has now followed their lead in going completely paperless.

INHERITANCE TAX: PLANNING IS VITAL

HM Treasury have confirmed that Inheritance Tax (IHT) receipts are up 14 per cent year on year in 2021-2022 hitting a record high of £6.1 billion. This surge in IHT payments is attributable to varying factors but particularly the rise in asset values as well as the UK Governments move to freeze the Nil Rate Band (NRB) for IHT to £325,000 until 2026 at the earliest.

If the value of your estate is above the £325,000 threshold, then IHT may be applied at 40 per cent above that amount.

However, 6th April 2017 marked the first time that former Chancellor George Osborne’s 2015 ‘£1 million IHT free’ statement became fact. The Government introduced an additional allowance for deaths after 6th April 2017 known as the Residence Nil Rate Band (RNRB) that can now increase your tax-free threshold by an extra £175,000.

Any assets passing to a spouse or civil partner (CP) when you die are free of IHT. Therefore, your NRB might be increased if you are widowed or are a surviving CP. A surviving spouse or CP’s estate can claim any unused NRB from the first to die’s estate. This can double the amount of NRB available up to £650,000 on second death.

• Had a family home, then downsized on or after 8th July 2015 (passing on assets of equivalent value to ‘direct descendants’ in their will),

RNRB is transferable between spouses/CPs in a similar way to the NRB. This can double the amount of RNRB available to £350,000. Adding these together, would give you a potential allowance of £1million before any IHT is payable.

Happy new year to you all – I’ve had so many mails and texts asking why I didn’t have a November column – note to self for next year!

Let’s start with the positives. I’m delighted to see that the leader of RVBC, Stephen Atkinson, has finally agreed to an interview in this issue. Let’s hope it’s the first of a series of articles. His main subject is the incredulous proposed changes to the constituency boundaries, which have left me flummoxed to say the least. I do understand the principle is to create a more evenly balanced set of UK constituencies but what possible symbiosis is there between Clitheroe and Colne?

There’s also a famous big hill between them, which isn’t just symbolic. I’m also astounded that the Ribble Valley MP Nigel Evans hasn’t mentioned the proposed changes in this month’s, or indeed any previous articles. If this went ahead, we would have to rotate between Nigel and his Pendle counterpart – the new MP for Clitheroe, Whalley, Chatburn and surrounding villages and Nigel wouldn’t even live in his own constituency. The new Ribble Valley would also include parts of South Ribble with literally no connection to all that the Ribble Valley stands for. The longer-term impact and fallout are yet to be seen – is it a done deal and therefore too little, too late? I hope not, but time is against delivering change. With local elections in May and a general election in the next 18 months, the political landscape

could well change. We need to ensure that those elected, represent all our needs and wishes – it’s our job to challenge and lobby if we want to see change. Turnout at local elections is notoriously low so don’t be an armchair critic and apathetic.

The Mumbai streets of Clitheroe are finally making progress, albeit very, very slowly.

Subject to some legals and red tape, I’m reliably told that RVBC has signed off the matched funding with LCC but work might not start until 2024. At least the new chair of LCC Highways is a Ribble Valley resident and I’ve no doubt we will be lobbying Rupert Swarbrick in due course.

I’m also told that the money from Central Government, from the Shared Prosperity Fund, has been approved.

The £1.9m over three years is a welcome boost that needs to be spent both wisely and quickly as any unused funds would have to be returned. From memory, a rather hurried list of projects had been cobbled together by the council to meet deadlines. In my view stakeholders now need to be consulted and a serious plan drawn up of key projects aimed at maximising the use of this money.

As we start the new year, I am naturally worried about the local economy and the increasing number of empty shops on the Ribble Valley high streets, notably in Clitheroe. My clients tell me that things have already slowed down in certain sectors and my friends in hospitality face an even tougher start to 2023. We must all pull together and create compelling arguments and reasons to keep the local economy strong – events to drive tourism and footfall, support from RVBC, active and enthusiastic Chambers of Trade must all play their part alongside an educated group of locals, who can see the value of a strong local economy. Our magazine remains fully committed in supporting these initiatives.

One of my other major fears is the pressure on our local food banks. We’ve also an article in this issue explaining their ‘perfect storm’, huge increases in requests and referrals and a huge downturn in donations. I urge you to try and help by donating time, or a little surplus food, to help your local community.

I’m sure like me, you will be making a host of new year resolutions. Many will be broken as our willpower and resolve are tested, but please add being kind to this year’s list. It doesn’t cost a penny and it’s one resolution to aim to keep for 2023. n

AND STILL THE CHAMPION…

There is something about the drama of testing yourself against an opponent whose goal is to knock you out. To some it’s a metaphor for life, but what often grips us is the why? David Fearnhead speaks to boxer Mickey Ellison to discover his motivation.

If you’d have seen Mickey Ellison after his fight in October you could have assumed he took a beating. His left eye was closed, his right seemingly on its way to a similar destiny. Yet he wore a broad grin. He had just retained his Central Area Light Heavyweight title on his first defence. There to witness it was his wife Jade and his two sons Rocco, six, and Rudy, four.

“I had to win it for them, I couldn’t let them see their dad lose.” In a sentence Mickey Ellison had just answered the question of why?

Ellison had claimed the title by knockout in July. However, two losses prior to that fight saw him cast as the underdog. Surprisingly, those losses are still raw. They still prick like a sharp needle to the skin. He is quick to address them, unprompted, even before talking about his victory.

“I got a first round stoppage. It was just one of those nights. He caught me cold. Then I fought for the English title against a boxer who I’d previously beat, and we tried to box him rather than beat him the

way I could,” he says.

Those aren’t excuses, but context.

“They looked at me having had a couple of losses and were thinking it would be a winnable fight for them. A gatekeeper, before he moved on to fight for a British title himself. And they obviously got it wrong.”

Driving the 32-year-old fighter was the importance of setting a positive example to his sons.

“Sometimes life is tough, and you have to show that you can carry on and not quit. Everyone has setbacks in life and you have bigger setbacks in life than losing a boxing match. So, it’s not going to make me turn away from the sport.

“There’s no padding in my record. It’s always been about testing myself. The defeats

gave me more spite to come back and win. I think I’m quite a nice guy really, but when I get my hands wrapped that’s when I know there is no going back. It’s showtime.”

What makes his success all the more remarkable is that whilst his opponents are mostly professionals, he is still holding down a full-time job as a joiner.

“I come home from work and warm up the food that my wife has made me. Get changed and set off to the gym. When I’m in the gym I give it everything because I don’t want to be taking time away from my wife and kids and be playing at it.”

For Mickey, there is the extra incentive to give his boys the start in life that he never had. One such decision was to send them to the private day school Oakhill in Whalley.

“People think I’m loaded because of the boxing, but that’s not true. It’s pretty tight. I’ve been boxing 10 years now and we sacrifice a lot. We don’t really go out for meals, don’t go out drinking. My wife is often on her own looking after the kids, whilst I’m at the gym. We want to give them the best future they can have and if boxing will help do that then I’ll keep fighting as long as I can.”

Mickey says he had one important father figure in his life, his grandfather, Walt, who was taken ill just before Mickey was about to defend his Light Heavyweight Central Area title belt: “Going into that fight I kind of knew. So, there was no way I was going to lose. That win was for him. I managed to go see him in hospital and tell him that I’d won even though I had a big black eye. He knew I was a champion before he died,” he adds poignantly.

Mic key credits his team of Head Coach Alex Matvienko along with Phil Robinson and Tom McNeil for their hard work in preparing him for success and of course, those sponsors who backed him in the early days, such as June Winfield of Winfield’s Outdoor, who are never forgotten.

Now with a title and a successful defence he’s hoping to attract more sponsors. They will be vital if he is to step up and challenge for a national belt. n

BONE BROTH

Packed with nutrients, bone broth is making a significant comeback as a simple, healthy superfood

It’s hard to think of a food that is super-healthy, packed with nutrients, warming and totally delicious. Well, bone broth is becoming increasingly popular in terms of nutrition, ethics and in hard times, it’s economical too.

The broth is made out of animal bones –something consumers and supermarkets have in recent years tended to dismiss, but there’s one place in the Ribble Valley that has been advocating this nose-to-tail consumer philosophy for many years.

Ian O’Reilly and Emma Robinson of Gazegill Organics at Rimington are true believers that all parts of the animal should be used: “We are selling more mixed stock bones, beef, lamb, chicken and marrow bone than ever.

“Our organic bones are in high demand such is their extraordinary quality –an essential for anyone searching for an

abundance of vitamins, minerals and trace elements,” says Ian.

Gazegill has been farmed by the Robinson family for almost 500 years and Ian and Emma have looked to the past to influence how they farm today. Their animals feed on rich hay meadows, which have a direct impact on their produce.

Gazegill Organics now sell a quarter of a ton of bones every week to restaurants and private consumers.

“A lot of our customers are very health conscious,” agree Ian and Emma. “They read up and find out about the benefits of broth –it’s a very nutrient-dense product.”

Bone broth is a rich, nutritious food that contains protein, collagen and minerals such as iron, calcium, magnesium and phosphorus and it is believed to improve our bone and joint health, promote weight loss and improve hair, skin and nails.

“Bone broth is a traditional concept that has returned. It’s uncanny that people are buying chicken feet again – boiling them

“Ox liver has stayed in our ‘top 10’ in terms of sales for a long time – heart too is also popular,” add Ian and Emma, who make their own five per cent fat mincemeat featuring 10 per cent heart, 10 per cent liver and 80 per cent minced beef as well as producing their own beef and offal burgers.

“The mince is delicious and again, packed with nutrients. Used just as you would normal mince, it is perfect for getting children to eat offal – as they don’t even know they are eating it!”

Gazegill has regular customers who buy grass-fed marrow bones: “Our customer base is from a wide demographic – from single parent families to those with lots of disposable income – we have even had orders from a leading Manchester City player!

“The concept of bone broth has animal welfare and ethics at its core,” adds Ian. “When we send out our Gazegill newsletter whenever we talk about nature and animal welfare it tends to engage people.”

Nose-to-tail consumerism has seen a huge resurgence among world renowned chefs as well as home cooks, who are reluctant to waste any part of the animal, especially in hard times: “It is about respecting the animal. It is amazing, from ox cheeks to pig cheeks, we have been advocating this way of eating for many years,” says Emma.

Ian adds: “All the things that some of the best supermarkets don’t seem to want, like ox tail, we can’t get enough of! People are becoming much more aware of what they eat and what they buy.” n

GAZEGILL BROTH RECIPE

Ingredients:

1-2 kg marrow middles

1 chicken carcass (use left over from a Sunday roast – zero waste)

Mixed veg – any combination of these

1 medium onion 1 large carrot 1 leek 1 chives 1 celery Salt and black pepper

1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar Water

Take your marrows and place in a covered roasting tray and roast at 180-200˚C for an hour (you can use a spare shelf in the oven when cooking your roast chicken dinner or air fry them). Roasting the bones gets all the flavour from them.

Don’t forget to deglaze the roasting tray and use this liquid. Store in the fridge until ready to use.

Take the bones, chicken carcass and all the other ingredients and place in a large stock pan or slow cooker and cover with water.

TIP: Use leftover veg water, this has a lot of goodness in it already.

Timings are roughly the same for hob and slow cooker.

Simmer bones (don’t let them boil or reduce too much) for 24 hours. If you do not want to cook overnight, cool and store in the fridge until you put them on the next day.

TIP: If you have, a pressure cooker is ideal and reduces cooking time by three hours.

Pass the cooked broth through a fine mesh sieve and place in jars. You can freeze these and use them as required.

TIP: For a deeper flavor add two tablespoons of soy sauce or coconut aminos, one cup roughly chopped mushrooms and two tablespoons of tomato paste – this creates a richer flavour.

Heat and season to taste – Maggi liquid seasoning is very good for this. Enjoy!

“The Rum Fox will be a mix of traditional and contemporary – on the menu there will be classics and light bites for the locals to pop in for a pie and a pint.

“But there will also be a seasonal menu that changes every month reflecting the local produce to keep things nice and fresh and there will be a taster menu too.”

Anew kid on the block will soon be joining the region’s stellar gastronomic line-up. The Rum Fox at Grindleton is headed up by chef patron Bob Geldeard, who took over

the inn two years ago in order to breathe new life into this small village community and to showcase his outstanding culinary talent to an audience further afield.

The interior of the pub, the former Buck Inn which had been closed for many years, has been totally re-modelled – the traditional ‘pie and a pint’ element designed to captivate the local market, has wood panelling, oak beams, a huge fireplace with log-burner and a feature quartz-topped bar.

Looking to attract a wider audience, there will be a private dining area to seat 10 while the restaurant has a modern open plan kitchen giving it a vibrant, contemporary ambience. Wherever you choose to dine, the seasonal, taster and classic pub menus will be available for you to enjoy!

An outdoor terrace with glass partitions and a roaring fire, will have a louvred roof creating a courtyard effect that will be perfect throughout the seasons: “It has fantastic views over Pendle Hill. It really is very different,” says Bob, who spent a year at the world-renowned Vue de Monde in Melbourne, Australia.

Closer to home he has worked at the Higher Buck Waddington and spent seven years at the Duke of York, Grindleton –just opposite his new Rum Fox venture. Showing their delight at the prospect of the inn re-opening soon, villagers have posted enthusiastic messages on social media.

With bookings being taken from the end of January, it is hoped the pub will open in February. n

Becky wanted to start this month’s article by wishing everyone a ‘Happy New Year’ and to thank them for their support throughout 2022. In many ways it’s been an excellent year for the burgeoning reputation for great food and service at the Black Bull, which has helped cement their position at the very top of the Ribble Valley food scene.

As we move into the new year, a time that is naturally quieter for hospitality, much has been made of the tough times ahead and news of the sad closures of many long-established pubs and restaurants. I was therefore curious to understand how Becky plans to overcome these concerns and drive the business forward.

As many of our regular readers know I have described Becky in many ways – let me add two more to that list – innovative and hard working.

SUPPER CLUB

As the year came to a close, Ribble Valley Singles Supper Club guests enjoyed authentic Italian cuisine at La Locanda in Gisburn with hosts Maurizio and Cinzia Bocchi. Considered by many as the most enjoyable Supper Club to date, one diner commented: “It was the best Supper Club that I’ve attended – and that’s high praise because we’ve had many wonderful evenings!”

The superb feedback from Singles Supper Club was echoed following a December Dinner Club event at the Three Fishes, Mitton. The private dining menu, enjoyed by 16 guests, began with canapes and featured starters that included Hebridean scallops, a choice of main courses including organic Standen Hall chicken with Christmas spices and a dessert of mandarin souffle – each course paired with wines from around the world.

Last year I qualified as a personal trainer and I’m now more conscious about what I eat and the effects it has on my body. It’s not just about putting on weight, the food we eat can change our lifestyle, both good and bad. If you’re reaching for the sweet, sugary and starchy foods in large quantities, these foods can affect our blood sugar levels. They are only a temporary fix to how we feel and once our energy levels drop again, this can cause mood swings, irritability and tiredness.

“I had pretty much been an urbanite as I had lived in central Manchester. But when I moved to Lancaster, my husband and I were driving through the Forest of Bowland and were blown away by the beautiful countryside.

An academic who delivered design-led lectures throughout the US and Europe discovered the Forest of Bowland and went on to set up a Ribble Valley business that is a resounding international success.

Eco-designer Selina Ellis-Gray, also known as Dr Hellion after naming her award-winning business Hellion Toys, says: “Hellion is an old-fashioned name for a mischievous child or rascal. When I was young, I was always called ‘trouble’ as I was always pushing the boundaries.”

Forest collection: “The rabbit has a key place in folklore,” she says.

Cutting out her characters on band saws and hand painting them, Selina creates simple educational toys that are packaged in recyclable cardboard, each coming with their own backstory.

Since starting Hellion, Selina’s educational toys have been sent all over the UK and exported to Italy, Spain and the Netherlands –helping youngsters understand letters, numbers and colours.

In 2020 Selina and Martin took studio space at Backridge Barn in the countryside surrounding Waddington, enabling them to start diversifying.

Promoting Hellion through social media platforms, Selina films herself making the wooden toys and has developed a significant following on Instagram.

Her eco-credentials are emphasised by her sourcing locally wherever she can: “We source our wood locally from Clitheroe and other parts of Lancashire and our boxes come from Accrington. We like to support other local businesses,” says Selina, whose work has recently been showcased in Manchester Art Gallery as an example of good, sustainable design with a low carbon footprint.

Hellion has also won the Let Toys be Toys Award three years in succession, an

acknowledgement of her gender-neutral and eco-friendly designs.

Working with reclaimed timber and poplar for the toys, Selina adds: “All our materials have to be lab tested so we can produce the end toy. Poplar has a beautiful grain. However, it tends to be quite knotty, so turning it to create the toy can sometimes be quite difficult.”

Contributing to Hellion’s eco-credentials, Martin has also created local signage from restored old slate roof tiles, which were then etched, and he also made Champion Bowland Awards from ash wood.

“We avoid acrylics and plastics at all cost,” says Selina. “The paints I use are as ecofriendly as they can be and are totally safe for children.

“We re-use and recycle as much as possible. Our ethos is that we need to consider how we look at the world and we all need to do our bit.”

Her heritage style designs are simple and as well as her educational toys, Selina has

been asked to design custom-built furniture for nursery children and signage for other local businesses.

She has also worked collaboratively with the Forest of Bowland’s Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) team creating a beautiful illustration for a Pendle Hill Story Map and has created illustrative signage at Whalley’s Spring Wood.

“With the toys I make, I love that the children understand how we interact with nature, the importance of it and the importance of sustainability. We need to be connected to nature and the environment and at Hellion we are totally committed to making things that are functional, practical and informative –as well as being made ethically.” n

It’s with these bold and inventive few lines that Tiffany McDaniel launches us into a coming-of-age story like no other.

Betty Carpenter is born in a bathtub in 1954 to a white mother and a Cherokee father, and unlike her siblings, it’s her father’s skin, eyes and hair that she’s born with. As a result, when the family move to a supposedly cursed house in a small town called Breathed, rooted at the foothills of the Ohio Appalachians, racial slurs are an everyday part of Betty’s life. But in reality, the schoolyard bullies are the least of her worries.

With a mother so smothered by her demons that she seems incapable of bearing their weight any longer, a sister forced to withstand well-concealed abuse within the family home, and a young brother who tortures himself night and day with fictitious illnesses and plagues of the body and mind, Betty’s father becomes her saviour and sanctuary. Holding fast to the Cherokee values and beliefs that run in his blood, Landon Carpenter feeds Betty stories that capture the beauty and magic of nature and it is with this, combined with Betty’s own ability to reclaim her trauma in her writing, that she is sustained.

Other reviewers have claimed to feel consumed by this book and on reflection, there really isn’t any other word for it. As a story that is fuelled by resilience and filled with sentimentality, poetry and a host of brutal truths, Betty is vivid, lucid and a novel that’s sure to stay with you for a long time. It’s a novel that bites and scratches – at times it’s uplifting and inspirational, at others it hits hard and your world will be changed because of it.

In this respect, Betty is a novel built around binaries – happiness and despair, light and dark, youth and old age. Where there is beauty in the natural world, there’s also brutality and in exposing traumas of the past, it raises questions about where the future can realistically lead.

Betty offers both an engaging and a challenging read. It’s a story about the bad cards life can deal and the patterns those hands can form in families. Addressing issues of abuse head-on, it asks, unflinchingly, to what extent our parents’ trauma ultimately becomes our own. Balancing this out is a persistent focus on the power and strength of women. Women as homemakers, as healers, as strength, charisma and descendants of Mother Earth. It’s a story about sisters, daughters, mothers – the complexity of these relationships and the familial bond.

Betty does something that only great writing can – it gently breaks open your heart and exposes the pain and the warmth that resides there. Beyond its plot, themes and messaging, there’s magic to be found in its language. McDaniel’s prose is stunning. There’s beauty and poetry in every line, every expression, every sentiment – so much so that you’ll wish you wrote it. Betty offers a story and main character that linger long in the subconscious. McDaniel’s world is a difficult one to leave behind and Betty is a book I’ll be forcing on all of my friends for the foreseeable. n

The property market in 2023 is hard to predict, but what happens to interest rates will be key to the success of the market. Demand is still high for property with prices achieving all-time highs due to the lack of new homes coming to the market. We are expecting prices and interest rates to stabilise

throughout 2023 and the market to return to pre-Covid activity, thus meaning a buoyant but slightly less erratic approach from purchasers and sellers alike.

The rental sector is still seeing massive increases in demand and rent achieved with a severe shortage of rental properties on the market, we expect to see

rents still increasing throughout 2023 as demand is still at unprecedented levels.

Well, the vultures are certainly circling the housing market –what with mortgage rates rising to 6%, a dramatic rise in yields on government bonds and a general feeling of malaise throughout the country. see the time from the property being under offer to completion reduce in some transactions, which is positive and solicitors are starting to get on top of the backlog post-Covid.

Mortgage rates are now on track to fall back to 4% in the ‘not too distant future’, brokers have said, following successive cuts to fixed rates made by lenders in recent weeks.

Looking forward to 2023 we expect that the market may start the year at a more sedate pace than in recent times. The Bank of England has recently raised interest rates for the eighth consecutive time, as it responds to continued inflation. For the last 13 years interest rates and inflation have been ultra-low and it is likely that mortgage rates of 5% will be the new normal.

Sales are still transacting, with estimated sales volumes for 2022 in the region of 1.2 million, significantly higher than the pre-

pandemic average of just over 900,000 (Dataloft, HMRC, five years 2015-2019).

Demand levels in the market have been unusually high since the end of the pandemic and are in effect returning to more normal levels. As the market has repeatedly seen, people will continue to move, but buyers will no doubt be increasingly focused on what they can afford and the cost of a mortgage. While many forecasters are predicting price corrections in the market, this needs to be considered in the context of

the unsustainable growth since 2020. Correct market pricing by agents is critical as the leeway between marketing price and ‘real’ price becomes more apparent.

Given the substantial price rises seen in the market over the past two years, there is only a low risk of negative equity for the vast majority of purchasers.

Many homeowners are often faced with the dilemma of whether it’s better to renovate, decorate and improve their existing home or take the plunge and move to another property

Your home has everything you like but over time, and often as your family grows the choice to stay and expand or fly to a different nest becomes a decision you need to make, and there are of course advantages and disadvantages to consider for both.

A well thought out renovation is generally kinder to your bank balance than moving to a new home. Improvements can be done one room at a time, allowing you to freely control the project to your available budget.

Of course, if you want to remodel most of your existing home then it probably isn’t worth the investment, and if your ultimate goal is to downsize then a new house is clearly the right way to go.

Planning is key if you decide to renovate as costs can vary dramatically and it’s

important to check that the work you are doing will eventually add value to your property, as you may still want to sell at some point in the future.

Before deciding to renovate or extend you need to know whether your property is even suitable for such a project. There may be planning permission to consider, especially if you want to add an extension

or make external changes. This can be complex, and it is always best to seek professional advice – a property surveyor could help avoid costly mistakes.

Buying a new home usually means that an estate agent will do a lot of the hard work for you – both promoting and selling your house whilst also helping you find your new dream home. And buying a new build often means that everything will be built in from the outset and be in touch with modern design.

Location is another important aspect to consider. Your current home may be in a perfect place and close to family and good schools, but the ideal location isn’t always easy to find. If you can’t find a new property with the same amenities then maybe alterations to your existing home is the best choice for you. Alternatively, if you want to move to a new location then even if renovating would be cheaper, a new house may be a better option.
