Welcome to our summer issue of Live Preston & Fylde. As the days are longer, the region comes alive with colour and we’ve packed this edition full of inspiration – from fashion, flowers and picnics to plants, perfect days out, summer style, the great outdoors and so much more.

Our cover story shines a spotlight on a remarkable local success story. We meet Craig and Maria Marcella, the husband-and-wife team behind Marcella’s Limoncello, who have transformed a treasured family recipe, nearly a century in the making, into an award-winning Lancashire craft spirit. Combining Italian heritage, sunripened Amalfi lemons and a distillery based in Lytham St Annes, their story is one of passion, tradition and entrepreneurial spirit.

Summer also means one thing for gardening enthusiasts across the region – the return of the Chorley Flower Show. What began as a horticultural showcase has blossomed into one of the North West’s flagship summer events, bringing together stunning floral displays, expert advice, entertainment, shopping and family-friendly attractions in the beautiful surroundings of Astley Park. Ahead of this year’s event, we chat to television gardener David Domoney, who shares his thoughts on gardening, wellbeing and what visitors can look forward to during the show.

In our latest Business Hour, we sit down with Emma Booth, Chief Brand Officer at Booths. As a business firmly rooted in heritage yet focused on the future, Booths remains one of the North’s most beloved family grocers. Emma discusses leadership, legacy and how the company continues to evolve while staying true to the values that have made it a household name for generations.

Alongside these features, you’ll find all the regular content you’ve come to enjoy, showcasing the people, places, events and businesses that make Preston, Fylde and the surrounding area such a vibrant place to live, work and visit.

Wherever you’re spending this summer, we hope this issue offers plenty of inspiration, a few new discoveries and a reminder of just how much there is to enjoy on our doorstep.

Enjoy the issue.

The Dales

ITALIAN ROOTS, LANCASHIRE SPIRIT

Italian heritage meets Lancashire craft in Marcella’s Limoncello –a family recipe nearly a century in the making, writes Ali Gudgeon

Italian heritage. Amalfi lemons. A Lancashire distillery. For Craig and Maria Marcella, these aren’t just ingredients or marketing lines – they’re the threads of a story that stretches back almost 100 years.

Marcella’s Limoncello is a modern business built on a deeply personal past. Its origins lie in the early 1930s, when Craig Marcella’s grandparents left the town of Cervaro in Italy’s Lazio region. Like many families of the time, they arrived in England with little – but among the possessions that mattered most was a handwritten limoncello recipe.

“That recipe was always part of the family,” Craig explains. “It wasn’t written in a book or anything fancy – it was just a piece of paper that had been passed down. But it meant everything to us.”

Craig’s father, Alan Louie Marcella and grandfather Angelo were raised near Naples, a region where limoncello is woven into daily life. Served ice-cold after meals, it’s a drink tied to hospitality, warmth and celebration. For decades, the Marcella recipe remained something private – made at home, shared with family and never commercialised.

That began to change years later in Lancashire, when Craig started making small batches for his wife Maria.

THAT RECIPE WAS ALWAYS PART OF THE FAMILY… IT MEANT EVERYTHING TO US

“I just made it for Maria at first,” he says. “It was something nice for us to enjoy at home, a bit of a nod to our heritage. But when friends tried it, they kept asking for more. That’s when we started thinking – maybe there’s something in this.”

What followed was a leap from kitchen tradition to business venture.

Today, Marcella’s Limoncello is produced in Lytham St Annes, combining that original family recipe with a commitment to artisan methods. The ingredients are simple and uncompromising – lemons sourced directly from Italy’s Amalfi Coast, water, sugar, alcohol

and lemon peel infusion – without any artificial colours, flavours or preservatives.

“You can’t fake this kind of flavour,” Craig says. “It comes from the lemons, from the process and from taking your time with it.”

That process is deliberately slow. Lemons are left to infuse for up to five weeks, allowing their oils to develop fully. The still runs overnight. It’s a rhythm that demands patience but rewards it with a smoother, more balanced drink – bright with citrus, but without the sharp edge of many massproduced alternatives.

“People sometimes don’t realise how long it takes,” Craig adds. “But that’s where the quality comes from. You can’t rush something like this.”

Traditionally, the limoncello is served straight from the freezer – ice-cold and velvety – but it has also found popularity in cocktails, particularly a refreshing limoncello spritz.

Behind the production process lies a story of steady growth. What began with a small still in the family kitchen has evolved into a fully equipped unit, complete with machinery representing a significant investment.

“It’s been a big jump,” Craig admits. “Going from the kitchen to a proper unit – it’s a different world. But we’ve taken it step by step and stayed true to what we started with.”

Craig also has his own window cleaning

company and Maria works in local government. The dream for them both would be running Marcella’s full-time – but it’s still early days.

Their authenticity has struck a chord locally. Marcella’s Limoncello is now sold online, appears regularly at markets and food festivals such as the Blackpool Makers Market and Fairhaven Lake events, and

WE’RE NOT JUST SELLING A DRINK - WE’RE SHARING SOMETHING THAT’S BEEN PART OF OUR LIVES FOR GENERATIONS

is stocked by businesses across the Fylde Coast and beyond. From Honeywell’s Farm Shop to restaurants like the Beach House Bistro in Blackpool, Lime Bar in Penwortham and Saucier in Preston, its footprint is growing fast.

Alongside its signature bottles, the business also offers smaller formats and gift sets – making it as suited to special occasions as it is to everyday indulgence.

For Craig, though, the focus remains firmly on the story behind the product.

“At the end of the day, it’s about family,” he says. “We’re not just selling a drink –we’re sharing something that’s been part of our lives for generations.” The labelling on the limoncello bottles is testament to that, proudly featuring the face of Craig’s father, Alan Louie Marcella.

The Marcellas have also launched their own vodka to the market this summer. A classic vodka, triple distilled and filtered for smoothness, it’s 40 per cent ABV and comes in a 70cl bottle.

Nearly a century after that handwritten recipe first made its journey from Italy to England, Marcella’s Limoncello is writing a new chapter – one bottle at a time, rooted in heritage and shaped by ambition. n

FROM CONCEPT

TO COMPLETION

Modern landscaping is no longer simply horticulture. It is design, structure, architecture and atmosphere – creating spaces to entertain, relax and add long-term value to the home

For years, homeowners have invested heavily in their interiors while often overlooking the potential of the space beyond their back door. That attitude is changing. At Bannister Hall Landscaping Supplies & Plant Nurseries in Higher Walton, there has been a noticeable shift in the way people view their gardens, with increasing numbers treating them as fully integrated living spaces rather than seasonal outdoor areas.

As Jon Carlyle Hollywood LLB (Hons), CEO of Bannister Hall Ltd, explains: “An increasing number of homeowners are now viewing their gardens as fully designed living environments. With a growing appetite for outdoor kitchens, structured seating zones and dedicated entertaining areas, gardens are no longer seen as seasonal spaces – they have become an extension of our lifestyles. Homeowners have stopped asking, ‘What

should we plant?’ and started asking, ‘How do we want to live?’”

One of the most significant developments in recent years has been the rise of 3D CGI garden

AND EMOTIONALLY

design. Much like interior architecture, outdoor spaces can now be digitally visualised before a single slab is laid.

Clients can explore porcelain terraces, pergolas, planting schemes and lighting effects in realistic detail long before installation begins, helping them make informed decisions with complete confidence.

“A garden should be designed with the same intent as a kitchen or living space,” says Jon. “Bannister Hall offers a true one-stop shop –from 3D CGI design through to paving, decking and plant selection – allowing clients to visualise the complete journey before we even break ground.”

Director Alan Lovell adds: “We’ve mirrored the concept of a high-end kitchen showroom and adapted it for landscaping projects.

Homeowners can work with their own dedicated 3D garden designer and project manager who oversees every stage of the development while helping them choose each element of their new garden from our extensive product ranges and plant nurseries.”

The result is fewer compromises, betterinformed decisions and outdoor spaces that feel thoughtfully curated rather than simply assembled.

Over the past 25 years, Bannister Hall has evolved from a specialist landscaping supplier into one of the North West’s most comprehensive landscaping destinations. Today, its established Landscaping & Design

Hub allows customers to gain inspiration, explore products, receive expert advice and source everything required for their project from one location.

“We recognised that customers wanted more than products,” explains Jon. “They wanted guidance, confidence and a clear vision of how their finished garden would look before work even started. Every successful landscaping project begins not with paving or plants, but with conversation and creativity.”

While recent years have seen a trend towards open-plan garden design, today’s homeowners are increasingly seeking structure and privacy. Mature screening trees and instant hedging are proving particularly popular, providing immediate impact without years of waiting for plants to establish.

With more than 40,000 trees, hedges and shrubs across three nurseries, Bannister Hall holds one of the largest private plant collections in Lancashire. Customers can walk among mature specimens and personally select the exact shapes and sizes that best suit their projects rather than ordering unseen. Mediterranean-inspired planting continues to grow in popularity. Mature olive trees, prized for their characterful trunks and architectural form, are increasingly being incorporated into contemporary Lancashire gardens. When combined with porcelain paving, ornamental grasses and carefully considered planting schemes, they bring a timeless elegance and sense of permanence to outdoor spaces.

Columnar Italian Cypress and structured evergreen topiary remain equally sought after, adding year-round structure, height and visual drama. The appeal lies in the contrast – distinctive Mediterranean forms set against the backdrop of the Lancashire countryside.

ALL LANDSCAPING PROJECTS BEGIN NOT WITH PAVING OR PLANTS, BUT WITH CONVERSATION AND CREATIVITY

Porcelain paving continues to dominate high-end landscaping schemes thanks to its durability, low maintenance requirements

and refined appearance. Large-format slabs in warm neutral tones create clean sightlines and help gardens feel larger and more cohesive. Meanwhile, composite decking, aluminium pergolas and integrated LED lighting are increasingly being incorporated into projects from the outset rather than added later as upgrades. Homeowners are thinking more holistically about how their outdoor spaces will function throughout the year.

Gardens are no longer an afterthought. They have become an extension of the home’s value – both financially and emotionally.

Whether the ambition is a contemporary entertaining space, a traditional family garden or a complete outdoor transformation, Bannister Hall offers the expertise, resources and inspiration to bring those ideas to life.

Because exceptional gardens do not happen by accident. They are carefully planned, expertly designed and thoughtfully delivered. And increasingly, that journey begins at Bannister Hall. n

BEES ARE BU ZZ ING…

July is the month of high summer and the garden comes alive during hot lazy afternoons to the sound of bees buzzing and the sight of fluttering butterflies, gathering pollen from plants

Butterflies, moths and bees feed on plant nectar which is why the best flowers for attracting them are often described as nectar or pollinator plants. One of the most popular is buddleja, also known as the Butterfly Bush, a hardy and reliable shrub whose flowers act like magnets for butterflies. Many strong-growing varieties are available, including one with variegated foliage called Harlequin, but they can be kept under control by some prudent pruning each spring. Several dwarf and compact varieties of buddleja are now available that are perfect for pots or tiny spaces, with flowers in colours from pink and white to magenta and deep purple. Other pollinator plants for summer include lavender, which bees love and foxgloves that are a favourite with bumblebees. Cosmos, scabious, bee balm and catmint are also ideal along with herbs such as thyme, oregano and chives. You can also add night-scented plants like phlox and night scented stocks to support moths and other night-time pollinators and if you plant them near seating areas you can enjoy their evening perfume as well. It’s important to mix open

and tubular flowers, early and late bloomers and bright colours to support as many species as possible. Bees are particularly drawn to purple, blue and violet flowers because they can see ultraviolet patterns on the petals that guide them to the nectar.

BEES ARE DRAWN TO PURPLE, BLUE AND VIOLET FLOWERS WHICH GUIDE THEM TO THE NECTAR

Apart from taking care of your pollinator plants, if there is one job to be done this month it’s to take lavender cuttings. Choose a strong, healthy non-flowering shoot, feel down the stem and cut at least 1cm below

where the stem gets more rigid. Trim the cutting at the base below a leaf so it’s about 10cm long. Then remove the lower leaves and the soft tip. Fill a terracotta pot with peat-free compost, inset cuttings around the edge, firm in and water well. Keep your cuttings in a cold frame or a sheltered spot outdoors, only watering occasionally if the compost dries out.

For fruit and veg growers, now is the time to sow more salad crops, like chicory, lettuce, rocket and radishes for a supply that will take you into autumn. Beetroot can still be sown up until the middle of the month, as can some carrot and turnip varieties. Sow brassicas and leeks directly outdoors, along with some potatoes, ready to enjoy during the winter. There will also be plenty to harvest – aubergines, beans, beetroot, carrots, courgettes, cucumbers, lettuce, onions, potatoes and tomatoes along with blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, rhubarb and strawberries. n

JULY TO-DO LIST

Some of the other garden jobs for July suggested by the RHS are:

• Deadhead, feed and water for a long-lasting show of flowers

• Clear algae, blanket weed and debris from ponds and keep topped up

• Don’t worry if the lawn goes brown, it will bounce back once it rains

• Water tubs and new plants if dry, but be water-wise

• Care for houseplants while on holiday

• Check for pests – especially aphids

• Pick courgettes before they become marrows

• Start picking tomatoes as they ripen and continue to feed and water

• Plant out leeks and brassicas for a winter harvest

• Give regular liquid feed to fruit or veg growing in containers

Introducing the next generation of robot mower

• AONavi Positioning & Navigation System

• Vision AI smart obstacle avoidance

• Advanced wire-free mapping

• All-Wheel Drive (X5 & X7) for slopes

• Tender to turf – no scuff marks on lawn

• Coverage – from 1,200m2 to 6,000m2

FLOWER POWER

Set against the backdrop of Astley Park, the Chorley Flower Show has grown into a flagship summer event, blending horticultural excellence with lifestyle, entertainment and community spirit

Returning from Friday 31st July to Sunday 2nd August, this year’s show promises a packed programme of activities, special guests and family-friendly attractions.

Among the headline names is TV gardener David Domoney, who will appear on Sunday 2nd August, bringing his signature blend of expert knowledge, enthusiasm and storytelling to the popular event.

For Domoney, the heart of Chorley Flower Show lies not just in its displays, but in its connection to the people behind them.

“The essence of a good flower show is the nurseries and local growers,” he explains.

“People underestimate the value of being able to speak directly to the people who grow the plants – that’s where you get the best advice.”

He says this direct interaction is what gives shows like Chorley their authenticity, allowing visitors to learn from experienced growers in a way that simply can’t be replicated elsewhere.

Alongside the horticulture, Domoney highlights the wider appeal: “There’s food, there’s drink, there’s entertainment – but

gardening shows are much more than events in fields. They’re a hub for the community, bringing people together through a shared love of nature.”

Although no stranger to Chorley, Domoney says it is particularly special to be back after several years focused on television projects such as Love Your Garden, which saw him transform outdoor spaces across the UK –including in the local area.

PEOPLE UNDERESTIMATE THE VALUE OF BEING ABLE TO SPEAK DIRECTLY TO THE PEOPLE WHO GROW THE PLANTS – THAT’S WHERE YOU GET THE BEST ADVICE

A familiar face on screens for over two decades as the resident gardening expert on This Morning, Domoney continues to reach new audiences through collaborations with chefs like James Martin, appearances on Love Your Weekend and his popular YouTube gardening channel, which now attracts over half a million UK viewers to his Step-by-Step Gardening Shows.

At this year’s show, Domoney will take to the stage with an engaging talk inspired by his book Plants with Superpowers, designed to captivate gardeners and non-gardeners alike.

“I’ll be talking about plants that can do extraordinary things – from plants that can count, to exploding flowers and species that change the shape of their leaves,” he says.

Describing himself as a “plant profiler”, Domoney blends science with storytelling to create a lively, accessible experience. Visitors can also look forward to book signings, Q&A sessions and meet-and-greet opportunities. Domoney will be joined by an impressive line-up of well-known gardening personalities across the weekend.

THEY’RE A HUB FOR THE COMMUNITY, BRINGING PEOPLE TOGETHER THROUGH A SHARED LOVE OF NATURE

On Saturday 1st August, Charlie Dimmock –best known for Ground Force and a host of BBC gardening programmes – will deliver inspirational talks and meet visitors.

The show will also welcome Rita Millat, finalist on BBC’s Interior Design Masters series 6. An interior designer, artist and retail expert, Rita’s work centres on storytelling and emotional connection, exploring our relationship with the spaces we share. At the show, she will bring this to life with a striking summer installation inside Astley Hall.

Throughout the three days, returning favourites Jonathan Moseley, Martin Fish and Jill Fish will share practical advice and demonstrations at The Potting Shed Garden Theatre.

The show opens on Friday 31st July, where BBC Radio Lancashire presenter Sharon Hartley will broadcast her show live from the event, speaking to visitors and exhibitors and bringing her trademark warmth and humour to the proceedings.

Beyond its expert talks and plant displays, Chorley Flower Show offers something for everyone. Visitors can expect spectacular show gardens, floral competitions, workshops, horticultural and lifestyle stalls, alongside a wide variety of food, drink and entertainment.

Now in its eleventh year, the show continues to grow in popularity, with tickets including entry to the Grade I listed Astley Hall, providing a striking historic backdrop.

Domoney is also keen to use his appearance to encourage more sustainable gardening habits, highlighting simple steps that anyone can take.

His top tips include:

• Composting at home to improve soil health

• Collecting rainwater, which is better suited to plant growth than treated tap water

• Growing your own food, even at a small scale

He also encourages gardeners to support wildlife, from bird-friendly spaces to simple bug habitats. “Sustainability doesn’t have to be complicated,” he says. “Often it’s simple changes that save money and make a big difference.”

Ultimately, Domoney believes the enduring appeal of flower shows lies in their ability to connect people – across generations and experience levels.

“Gardening is a great equaliser. Whether you’re experienced or just starting, it’s the same appreciation of plants that brings people together.”

And his final piece of advice for visitors this summer? “Take a minute at the end of the day, sit down with your favourite drink and just enjoy your garden.” n

Tickets can be purchased at: chorleyflowershow.com or from the Astley Hall Gift Shop, Ebb & Flo Bookshop (St Thomas’s Road in Chorley town centre) and Chorley Theatre – for opening hours of each ticket outlet, please see: chorleyflowershow.com/tickets

FLOWER SHOW SUCCESS

From Chelsea to Gardeners’ World Live, Preston and Fylde’s gardening expertise is flourishing. Local achievements have put local horticulture firmly in the spotlight, earning recognition at some of the UK’s most prestigious gardening events

A DOUBLE DOSE OF GOLD

Greg Anderton and his team at Lytham Hall’s Garden Hub (pictured top middle) scooped an RHS Chelsea Flower Show Gold for their display in the Great Pavilion. One of the most prestigious awards in the horticultural world, the result was a testament to their plant quality, display flair and quality of finish. Greg and the team would like to thank their sponsor and wonderful grower supporter, Golden Valley plants, for their help in growing beautiful plants for them.

Greg said: “I never expected to achieve a Gold Medal on my first time exhibiting at the Chelsea Flower Show and it certainly made all the hard work worth it. The story of the garden was very personal to me telling the story about how I started gardening with my grandparents while playing with my trains amongst the cottage garden flowers. Winning a gold for this display was especially meaningful.”

Following on from Greg and Matt’s Chelsea win, the team also attended the Gardeners’ World Live show at the NEC in Birmingham. Together with their sponsor, Golden Valley plants, they won another gold medal!

Their winning display featured a lot of delphiniums and foxgloves, two of Greg’s favourite cottage garden flowers. Delphiniums are ideal for raised beds in a sunny spot, benefitting from a free root run. Foxgloves are an ideal plane for shade and provide spires of colour during summertime.

CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW WINS

This year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show saw Blue Diamond Garden Centre win a Gold Medal for its ambitious new garden, constructed by Peter Dowle and his team at

The garden showcased the breadth, quality and relevance of plants grown directly in Blue Diamond’s nurseries, while addressing some of the most pressing challenges facing today’s gardeners, including drought-tolerant planting, growing food in small spaces and sustainable gardening practices.

It was the only fully immersive, walk-through garden in the Great Pavilion. It was also one of the largest gardens in the Great Pavilion, spanning 240 square metres and featuring over 35 metres of walk-through pathways for visitors to explore.

The space unfolded across a series of thoughtfully curated zones including ‘Thrive Not Just Survive’ drought-tolerant planting in the Dry Garden, leading into a Plant House showcasing greenwalls of Tropical Houseplants, then into the Exotic Shade-Loving plants, Vertical Edible Walls and our Tapestry Garden, a contemporary take on a Cottage Garden style of planting. The garden showcased an extensive and diverse plant range, including new and exclusive plant introductions, and three new roses bred by Rosen Tantau, one launched on behalf of the charity Hospice UK.

Enhancing the sense of theatre and drama, a striking water feature served as a showstopping centrepiece, delivering a truly immersive and memorable sensory experience. n

The ethos is simple – treat an outdoor shower as you would any interior scheme. Tiles bring structure, colour and depth, transforming what could be purely functional into something far more defined.

Grazzie Wilson, Head of Creative at Ca’ Pietra, explains: “An outdoor shower should feel like an extension of the home rather than something temporary or improvised. Tiles allow you to give it presence, so it becomes part of the overall design of the garden rather than just a utility.”

Used vertically, tiles introduce height against rendered walls or timber structures, while smaller formats bring a gentle shift in tone that changes with the light throughout the day.

There is also a natural relationship between tile and the wider garden palette. The softness of planting, the texture of stone, the warmth of aged timber all sit comfortably alongside tiles that carry variation in glaze and surface, allowing the shower to feel anchored within its surroundings rather than separate from them.

Colour plays a central role in shaping that balance. Earth-led neutrals bring cohesion, particularly when paired with gravel or stone underfoot, while greens and blues draw from planting, water and sky.

Natural stone brings a different quality, one that feels inherently connected to the

SUMMER SHOWERS

Outdoor showers are no longer just practical add-ons for post-swim rinses or muddy boots. They are becoming one of the most design-led features in the garden while elevating the space around them

garden. Limestone, sandstone and travertine introduce softness and variation, sitting effortlessly within planting schemes and weathering gently over time. When finished appropriately, stone works particularly well underfoot, offering grip alongside a more relaxed, organic feel.

Alongside aesthetics, performance is key. Outdoor showers are exposed to fluctuating

temperatures, moisture and wear, making material choice essential.

Slip resistance should always be considered underfoot, especially in areas that will be regularly wet. As a guide, an R11 slip rating is recommended for outdoor tiles in these settings, helping to ensure grip without compromising on design. Textured porcelain or a suitably finished natural stone provides reassurance while maintaining a cohesive look, ensuring practicality does not interrupt the overall scheme.

“Function should sit comfortably alongside design, especially outdoors. When the materials are right, you do not have to compromise. An outdoor shower should still feel like it belongs in winter. When you choose materials that age well, it becomes part of the landscape rather than something that only comes into its own for a short time,” adds Grazzie.

Installation and detailing play an important role in how the space performs over time. Proper drainage ensures water is directed away effectively, while frost-resistant adhesives and grouts help protect against seasonal changes. These are the quieter decisions within a project, but they are what allow the design to hold its integrity as the garden evolves. n

SUMMER TRENDS

From breezy coastal inspiration to sun-soaked textures and vibrant bursts of colour, this summer’s interior trends reflect a shift towards more expressive, feel-good spaces

As we spend more time shaping our homes around how we want to live and feel, walls are taking on a more central role, adding depth, energy and personality to everyday life.

A BREEZY STATE OF MIND

The coastal aesthetic is having a strong moment this summer. Rooted in ease and familiarity, it brings together sun-washed tones, natural materials and an effortless way of living, creating spaces that feel light, inviting, and timeless.

“The coastal trend is about more than aesthetics – it’s about creating a feeling of ease. Right now, we see people gravitating towards interiors that feel familiar, light and comforting,” says Katarina Matsson, Design Advisor at Photowall.

Start with a base of soft whites and light blues to create a fresh, airy foundation. Layer in linen, jute and washed cotton alongside weathered wood for a relaxed, grounded feel. Finish with rattan details, hydrangeas, shells and ocean-inspired details.

SUMMER ENERGY

This summer, bold and vibrant colours take centre stage. After seasons of muted tones, we see a renewed appetite for playful, expressive interiors, where colour is used to energise spaces and reflect a more optimistic mood.

“We’re seeing a real shift towards more expressive interiors. Colour has become a way to bring energy and optimism into the home, something many people are looking for right now,” adds Katarina.

Start with a bold statement wall, mural or artwork and let it set the tone. Pair with neutral furniture for balance, or layer complementary colours for a more playful look. Add glossy or reflective materials to create a dynamic, uplifting space.

MEDITERRANEAN SLOW LIVING

Inspired by sun-drenched villas and a slower pace of life, the Mediterranean trend is all about texture and depth. This season, we see a growing desire for interiors that feel grounded and authentic, with surfaces shaped by sun, sea and time.

Choose wallpapers and murals inspired by limestone, plaster or marble to create a warm, natural base. Combine with materials like terracotta, stone, wood, linen and wool for a layered look. Add open shelves, handmade ceramics and vintage pieces to complete the space. n photowall.com

In this summer property, interiors and refurbishment features section, we celebrate a season that consistently sparks activity across every corner of the housing market.

From first-time buyers and growing families searching for more space, to homeowners unlocking the potential of their current property, summer often provides the motivation – and momentum – to take the next step.

At the same time, refurbishment and renovation projects are booming. Rather than moving, many homeowners are choosing to reimagine the homes they already love. Extensions, loft conversions, open-plan redesigns and energy-efficient upgrades are helping people create homes that better suit modern family life. Summer offers ideal conditions for construction and refurbishment work, making it a natural time for homeowners to begin projects that may have been months – or even years – in the planning.

The region is also seeing continued interest in new-build developments, with buyers drawn to the benefits of contemporary design, energy efficiency and low-maintenance living. Across Preston and the Fylde Coast, developers are responding to demand with exciting new communities that provide both style and practicality. For buyers seeking a fresh start, these developments offer the chance to move into homes designed around the way people live today.

HOMES FOR GOOD

Prospect Homes has commenced work on Weaver’s Rise, its latest Lancashire development, bringing 121 new homes to the Ribble Valley village of Mellor Brook

Located on Myerscough Smithy Road, the scheme reflects Prospect Homes’ wider ethos of creating ‘Homes for Good.’ As part of the Riverside Groupa not-for-profit organisation with more than 90 years’ experience - the housebuilder reinvests profits into initiatives that tackle homelessness and support communities.

“We want to create places where people genuinely want to live,” explains Nia O’Sullivan, Head of Sales. “It’s about more than building homes - it’s about building communities in handpicked locations.”

Weaver’s Rise has been carefully designed to meet local housing need, offering a mix of 78 three and four-bedroom homes alongside 43 affordable properties. These will include discounted market homes, shared ownership and rental options, helping a wider range of buyers take their first or next step on the property ladder.

“It’s tough out there for buyers at the moment,” says O’Sullivan. “Schemes like our discounted homes have been really successful because they help people get on the market when saving for a deposit can feel overwhelming.”

Location is a major draw. Mellor Brook offers a desirable blend of village charm and connectivity, appealing to those looking to balance work and lifestyle. “It’s got fantastic transport links, while still having that village feel,” O’Sullivan says.

“What we’ve seen from similar developments is that people can reduce their commute during the week, but then really enjoy the area in their downtime.”

The development also caters to buyers at every stage of life. From bungalows to larger fourbedroom family homes, the range has been designed with flexibility in mind.

“There really is something for everybody,” she adds. “We’ve thought about first-time buyers, growing families and also downsizersbecause downsizing can be just as challenging, and people don’t want to compromise.”

Homes at Weaver’s Rise will be built to a high specification, with a strong focus on sustainability and energy efficiency. Features include air source heat pumps and fully electric systems, going beyond current regulations.

“We’ve chosen to move ahead of legislation so buyers can benefit straight away,” says O’Sullivan. “Not only are the homes ready to move into, but they’re also more efficient, which helps with running costs.”

For many purchasers, the appeal of a new build lies in its simplicity. “You’re not having to renovate, which can be so costly,” she notes. “It’s a blank canvas so you can move in, furnish it and make it your own.”

IT’S ABOUT MORE THAN BUILDING HOMES - IT’S ABOUT BUILDING COMMUNITIES IN HANDPICKED LOCATIONS

Sales for Weaver’s Rise are expected to launch soon, with show homes opening later this year. Interest is already building. “We’ve had people registering before we’ve even officially marketed the development,” O’Sullivan says. “There’s clearly a real appetite for homes like these in this area.”

Combining quality, sustainability and a strong social purpose, Weaver’s Rise looks set to become a valuable addition to Mellor Brookand a place many will be proud to call home. n

landscape and context. Great projects start with a clear strategy.

“They don’t have the time to become planning experts, manage consultants or navigate complex regulations.”

Working with the client and local authority, BCAE developed a planning and design strategy tailored to the site. Instead of treating planning as a hurdle, the team focused on identifying opportunities, engaging early with stakeholders and shaping proposals that responded positively to both the site and its landscape setting.

The outcome is a consented scheme for three bespoke luxury homes of 7,500–9,500 square feet. Rather than beginning with a preconceived idea of what the homes should look like, the design process started with the people who will live there. Their routines, aspirations and lifestyle have shaped every decision, resulting in homes that feel entirely personal whilst sitting comfortably within the landscape.

FROM GREEN BELT CHALLENGE

TO EXCEPTIONAL HOMES

Known for creating exceptional homes across the North West, BCAE Architects partnered with a local business owner to unlock the potential of a challenging Green Belt site, writes Sarah Ulyatt

Some of the most exciting opportunities are often hidden behind complex planning constraints, Newgate Farm represented exactly that.

Having owned the land for years, BCAE’s client recognised its potential long before plans were ever drawn. Situated within the Green Belt, the site was challenging but offered a rare opportunity to create three exceptional homes in a location he knew and cared about.

Like many of BCAE’s clients, he was a busy business owner with strong ties to the local community. He was looking beyond simply securing planning permission, wanting

to create homes that felt rooted in their surroundings, delivered exceptional living spaces and created lasting value. Having worked with architects professionally, he understood the importance of choosing the right team. For this project, he needed a practice capable of navigating a complex planning process whilst delivering architecture of genuine quality, shaped by generous spaces, carefully considered layouts and a strong connection to the landscape.

OFTEN, THE OPPORTUNITY IS THERE, IT SIMPLY REQUIRES A CLEAR UNDERSTANDING OF PLANNING POLICY, LANDSCAPE AND CONTEXT

“Many clients come to us with sites that present genuine challenges,” says Ben Craven Co-Director of BCAE Architects. “Often, the opportunity is there, it simply requires a clear understanding of planning policy,

For BCAE, exceptional homes don’t begin with architecture. They begin with understanding how people want to live.

Planning permission was secured at the first attempt in just seven weeks, ahead of the standard determination period, with pre - commencement matters resolved early so work could begin immediately.

For the client, the approval provides certainty and a clear route forward. For BCAE, the project reinforces a belief that has shaped the practice from the very beginning: some of the most exciting opportunities are often found on the sites others overlook. With the right strategy, design and collaborative approach, even the most challenging sites can become exceptional places to live. n

A CENTURY OF STYLE

Standing proudly in the heart of Lytham, Stringers department store is far more than a place to shop – it is a cornerstone of the town’s identity

Generations of local families and visitors alike have passed through its doors, drawn not only by its carefully curated collections but by the sense of history, continuity and personal service that define this much-loved independent business.

Stringers has long been woven into the fabric of Lytham life. Founded in 1852 as a modest drapery, the store has grown steadily into a respected destination for fashion, home and lifestyle. Over the decades, it has evolved alongside the town itself, expanding its offering while retaining the values that first made it successful. Since 1957, the Clarke family has guided the business, ensuring that it remains both forward-thinking and firmly rooted in tradition.

Its position on Lytham’s high street has been central to its enduring appeal. Surrounded by independent shops, cafés and heritage buildings, Stringers sits at the heart of a thriving retail community that has resisted the decline seen in many other British town centres. The store is widely regarded as one of the anchors of the high street – part of what makes Lytham such a distinctive and attractive place to live and visit. For many, it provides a sense of familiarity and trust in an ever-changing retail landscape.

FOUNDED IN 1852 AS A MODEST DRAPERY, THE STORE HAS GROWN STEADILY INTO A RESPECTED DESTINATION FOR FASHION, HOME AND LIFESTYLE

Today, Stringers remains committed to delivering a contemporary shopping experience. Its collections are thoughtfully selected for their quality, originality and style, offering customers something beyond the standard high street chain. From

fashion to homeware, the store is known for combining timeless elegance with modern design – an approach that reflects both its heritage and its willingness to embrace change.

Behind that enduring reputation lies a legacy of strong family leadership, and at its heart is Lois Clarke, who this year celebrated her remarkable 100th birthday. Lois has been an integral part of Stringers for nearly seven decades and played a significant role in shaping the store’s character. When her husband Ralph became Managing Director in 1957, she stepped into a role that would quietly influence the business for generations.

As fashion buyer, Lois developed a

keen eye for trends and quality, selecting collections that captured both classic style and contemporary appeal. Her influence helped define the look and feel of Stringers, ensuring it stayed relevant while remaining true to its identity. At the same time, she balanced family life with her work at the store, raising four children while contributing to the day-to-day running of the business.

That blend of family and business became one of Stringers’ defining strengths. Lois helped to cultivate the warm, personal atmosphere that customers still associate with the store today. As she has often said: “It’s all about the people and the connections you make in life.” Her memories of colleagues

and loyal customers highlight just how much the human element has always been at the heart of Stringers’ success.

In later years, Lois took on senior roles as Director and Chairman, offering guidance as the business adapted to new challenges and opportunities. Her outlook was always forward-thinking – supporting new ideas and change when needed. “We can’t stand still, we must move forwards,” she would say, a philosophy that continues to guide the store’s evolution today.

WE CAN’T STAND STILL, WE MUST MOVE FORWARDS

What Stringers is best known for is this unique combination of heritage and adaptability. It is a store where traditional values – quality, service and community –meet a modern retail experience. Knowledgeable staff, carefully chosen products and a welcoming environment all contribute to its enduring popularity.

As Lytham celebrates one of its treasured local figures reaching a century, Lois Clarke’s story stands as a testament to family, resilience and a lifelong passion for retail. At the same time, Stringers itself remains a symbol of what the high street can be at its very best: personal, independent and deeply connected to the community it serves. n

include is protein. Nobody wants a salad that leaves them hungry an hour later. Chicken, salmon, eggs, chickpeas, lentils or tofu can all help make your salad feel like a proper meal rather than a side dish pretending to be lunch.

One of my favourite ways to make a salad more interesting is by adding texture. A salad with no crunch is missing something. I love adding crispy chickpeas baked in the oven with extra virgin olive oil, paprika and cumin until they’re golden and crunchy. They’re packed with fibre, add loads of flavour and make every mouthful that little bit more interesting.

EVERY VEGETABLE, HERB, BEAN, NUT AND SEED ADDS TO YOUR WEEKLY PLANT DIVERSITY

Another ingredient I love adding is healthy fats. Avocado, seeds, nuts and a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil can take a salad from

NUTRITION WITH KELI

Expert Keli Thompson explains how to pack a punch with nutritious summer salads that are full of flavour and goodness

One of the most common things I hear from clients during the summer months is that they’ve had a salad for lunch, but they are hungry an hour later. Most of the time, it’s not the salad that’s the problem – it’s what hasn’t made it into the bowl.

If you’ve ever eaten a salad for lunch and found yourself eyeing up the biscuit tin

by 3pm, chances are your salad needed a little more love.

The thing is salads don’t have to be boring. In fact, when they’re packed with colour, flavour and texture, they can be hands down one of the most delicious and nourishing meals.

A SALAD WITH NO CRUNCH IS MISSING SOMETHING. I LOVE ADDING CRISPY CHICKPEAS BAKED IN THE OVEN WITH EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL, PAPRIKA AND CUMIN

One thing I always encourage my clients to do is stop thinking about what they need to take away from a meal and start thinking about what they can add in. This way of thinking can completely change how you approach healthy eating.

When I’m building a salad, colour is always my starting point. The more colour, the better. Peppers, beetroot, tomatoes, carrots, radishes, red cabbage, sweetcorn –if it’s full of colour and sitting in the fridge, it’s probably going in. Not only does it make your salad look far more appealing, but you’re also getting a much wider range of nutrients and plant foods.

Another thing I always make sure to

average to delicious while helping keep you feeling fuller for longer.

I also like adding a source of carbohydrate to my salads, whether that’s quinoa, lentils, legumes, rice or sweet potato. These ingredients help turn a side salad into a balanced meal that keeps you feeling satisfied and energised for longer.

As many of you know, gut health is a huge passion of mine and salads are one of the easiest ways to support it. Every vegetable, herb, bean, nut and seed adds to your weekly plant diversity, which is great news for your gut microbes. I like to think of every salad as an effortless way to sneak a few more plant points into the week.

This summer, have a little more fun with your salads and don’t be afraid to get creative with them. Try a new ingredient, add a bit more colour to your bowl or experiment with different textures. Most importantly, make them something you genuinely look forward to eating.

Because healthy eating should never feel like a punishment and a really good salad should be anything but boring. n

At EMA Skin Aesthetics, founder Emma Pearce continues to lead the way in advanced non-invasive skin technology and transformational anti-ageing treatments including Plasma Pen™ and Dual Focus Fusion.

With years of experience and a reputation for exceptional results, Emma has helped thousands of clients restore confidence while maintaining a natural, refreshed appearance.

With thousands of happy clients, proving it’s never too late to achieve a more youthful skin, it’s time to book in with Emma.

A complimentary consultation is recommended to start your journey in defying age.

PLASMA PEN™ –REGENERATE, TIGHTEN AND REFRESH

As we age, collagen and elastin production naturally decline, leading to skin laxity, wrinkles and loss of firmness. Plasma Pen™ works by creating controlled micro-traumas on the skin’s surface, stimulating the body’s natural healing response and encouraging new collagen and elastin production.

This treatment effectively reduces fine lines and wrinkles, tightens loose skin around the eyes, mouth and neck and improves overall skin texture. Unlike traditional cosmetic procedures, Plasma Pen™ works with the skin’s own regenerative processes, with results continuing to improve over several months and lasting up to three years.

DUAL FOCUS FUSION –THE NEXT GENERATION OF NON-SURGICAL LIFTING

For those seeking a more comprehensive approach to facial rejuvenation, EMA’s exclusive Dual Focus Fusion combines HIFU, Radio Frequency and

EMS muscle stimulation. This advanced treatment works beneath the skin’s surface to stimulate collagen production, tighten tissue and strengthen facial muscles, creating a noticeable lift, improved definition and enhanced skin quality without surgery or lengthy recovery times.

Delivered in two phases, the first focuses on deep lifting and muscle sculpting using HIFU and EMS technology. The second refines and

tightens the skin through Radio Frequency and EMS stimulation to improve tone, texture and facial contours.

Whether choosing Plasma Pen™ or Dual Focus Fusion, clients can expect natural-looking improvements, enhanced radiance and renewed confidence. Emma’s philosophy is simple: every treatment should be tailored to the individual, combining advanced technology with

AGEING WELL

The mouth is not separate from the body. It is the gateway to it. We now understand that oral health can influence inflammation, sleep quality, metabolic health and long-term wellbeing. If your goal is not simply to live longer, but to live healthier for longer, oral

THE MOST IMPORTANT PRINCIPLE OF LONGEVITY IS SIMPLE – PREVENTION IS ALWAYS MORE POWERFUL THAN INTERVENTION

health deserves a place alongside nutrition, exercise, sleep and stress management.

INFLAMMATION CONNECTION

One of the most important concepts in longevity medicine is inflammation. While inflammation is a normal and essential part of the body’s defence system, chronic low-grade inflammation is associated with many conditions we commonly see as we age, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cognitive decline and autoimmune disorders. What many people don’t realise is that the mouth can be a significant source of this inflammatory burden. Gum disease, oral infections and imbalances within the oral microbiome can create a

Your oral health could determine how well you age, advises Dr Usman Riaz,

at Renovo Dental

Everyone is searching for the next anti-ageing treatment. We invest in skincare, supplements, fitness programmes, recovery therapies and wearable technology, all in the pursuit of living longer and feeling better. Yet one of the most important factors influencing long-term health is often overlooked –your mouth.

constant inflammatory challenge. In some cases, harmful bacteria and inflammatory mediators can enter the bloodstream through inflamed gum tissues and influence systems far beyond the mouth itself. The consequences are often invisible. This is why prevention is so important. By identifying and addressing oral inflammation early, we are supporting whole-body health.

MOUTH-GUT CONNECTION

Every day we swallow thousands of times, continuously introducing bacteria, enzymes and immune signals into the gut. A healthy oral microbiome helps support this process, while an unhealthy one may contribute to wider imbalances throughout the digestive system. Increasingly, research is highlighting the close relationship between oral health, gut health and systemic wellbeing. What is already clear is that oral health should no longer be viewed in isolation.

NEW APPROACH TO DENTISTRY

Traditional dentistry has often been reactive. A patient attends a check-up, a cavity is identified, a filling is placed and treatment continues. Longevity-focused dentistry takes a different approach. Rather than simply treating disease once it appears, the goal is to identify risk factors early and create personalised strategies that support long-term health. At Renovo Dental, we don’t guess – we test. Using advanced noninvasive saliva testing, the team identifies specific bacterial burdens causing hidden inflammation, with a focus on restoring full body health through oral health optimisation.

We focus on uncovering the root causes of disease and many of those causes begin in the mouth, impacting the entire body and immune system. At Renovo Dental, our approach combines advanced diagnostics with a deeper understanding of the relationship between oral and systemic health. Modern imaging allows us to assess not only teeth and gums but also bone levels, airway structures and other factors. In some patients, dental assessments can help identify airway concerns or structural issues that may be contributing to poor sleep quality and when sleep is compromised, recovery, hormonal balance, immune function and overall wellbeing can all suffer.

AT RENOVO DENTAL, WE DON’T GUESS – WE TEST. USING ADVANCED NON-INVASIVE SALIVA TESTING, THE TEAM IDENTIFIES SPECIFIC BACTERIAL BURDENS CAUSING HIDDEN INFLAMMATION

OLD DENTAL WORK MATTERS

Beyond gum disease, outdated dental restorations can silently fuel inflammation. Fillings, crowns and implants degrade over time, leaking metals and toxins into gums and bone, triggering immune reactions and systemic inflammation. This process often occurs without discomfort or warning signs. Updating compromised dental work is not simply about aesthetics. It is about

restoring function, improving biological compatibility and reducing potential sources of chronic inflammation before they become larger problems.

INVESTING IN YOUR FUTURE HEALTH

The most important principle of longevity is simple – prevention is always more powerful than intervention. The decisions we make today influence how we will feel in five, 10 and 20 years from now. For me, dental longevity is about understanding the individual as a whole, identifying risks early and creating

a personalised strategy that supports lifelong health. This philosophy has been at the heart of Renovo Dental since the day we opened five years ago. We recognised early that the future of dentistry would extend beyond teeth and move towards a more integrated understanding of health, function and wellbeing. Five years later, the science is increasingly validating what we believed from the beginning. So, when was your last dental health assessment? It may be one of the most important investments you make in your future health. n

RESTORING MOVEMENT, RECLAIMING LIVES

For those with chronic joint pain, daily life can be tough but new orthopaedic treatments are transforming outcomes, writes Ali Gudgeon. Photography: Michael Porter

Advances in orthopaedic care are transforming lives - something Mr Merzesh Magra, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Spire Fylde Coast Hospital, sees first-hand every day. Mr Magra specialises in hip and knee replacement surgery, a field he was drawn to early in his training. “What fascinated me was the remarkable improvement patients experience in a relatively short space of time,” he explains. “These are people who come in with significant pain and limited mobility, and after surgery, they’re often among the happiest and most grateful patients in the hospital.” That transformation is what makes his work so rewarding. Patients frequently return to share milestones - whether it’s completing a long walk, enjoying a round of golf, or even climbing a mountain. “It really feels like you’re giving them their life back,” he says. “Not just physically, but mentally as well.”

Orthopaedic surgery has evolved dramatically in recent years, with faster recovery times and improved outcomes. One of the most significant developments is Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS), which combines modern anaesthetic techniques, improved pain

management and early mobilisation. “Patients are now often walking on the same day as their operation and going home the following day,” says Mr Magra. “Years ago, they might have stayed in hospital for up to six days.”

Advances in materials have also played a key role. Highly durable, cross-linked polyethylene components reduce wear in artificial joints, helping to preserve bone and extend implant lifespan. Meanwhile, cutting-edge technology is pushing surgical precision even further.

“Robotic arm-assisted surgery has been a major step forward,” Mr Magra explains. Using pre-operative CT scans to build a 3D model of a patient’s joint, the technology allows surgeons to plan procedures with exceptional accuracy.

During the operation, the consultant maintains full control throughout, with robotic guidance enhancing precision in implant placement and reducing disruption to surrounding tissue.

“The result is better joint function, less pain and quicker recovery,” he says. “We’re able to preserve more bone, improve biomechanics and ultimately achieve better long-term outcomes.”

IT REALLY FEELS LIKE YOU’RE GIVING THEM THEIR LIFE BACK. NOT JUST PHYSICALLY, BUT MENTALLY AS WELL.

Recovery itself has become far more patientfriendly. Improved pain control techniques mean less reliance on strong opioid medications, reducing side effects such as nausea and drowsiness. Patients are encouraged to start moving as soon as possible, building strength and confidence at their own pace. Most are back to driving after six weeks.

Looking ahead, Mr Magra is excited about the potential of “smart implants” - devices embedded with sensors that could monitor how a joint is functioning in real time. “They could help us detect early signs of problems and better understand how patients use their joints,” he says.

For now, his message to patients is reassuringly clear: “Modern joint replacement surgery is very safe and highly s uccessful. With today’s technology and techniques, our focus is on helping people return to an active, pain-free lifestyle - faster than ever before.” n

KEEPING MOVING

Tucked away in Fulwood, Sole and Beauty has quietly built a reputation as far more than a traditional podiatry clinic, writes Ali Gudgeon

Under the leadership of owner and podiatrist Alex Austin, it has become what she describes as a “mini satellite health centre” – a place where patients can access everything from wound care and orthotics to physiotherapy, massage and aesthetics, all under one roof.

“At our core, we’re trying to keep people moving,” Alex explains. “We’ve been vital in this area for years and we have clients coming from across Cumbria and Yorkshire because we really care about helping people get back on their feet.”

That ethos goes beyond treatment. Sole and Beauty works closely with local GPs and a nearby pharmacist, offering services such as neurological and vascular testing that can help speed up diagnoses. Alex adds: “We help connect people to the right care and often reduce the long waiting times they’d face elsewhere.”

A key area of expertise is pre- and postsurgery rehabilitation, especially for joint replacements. Alex is passionate about educating patients on what happens beyond the operating theatre. “A joint replacement isn’t the end of the journey,” she says.

“You’ve got to strengthen muscles, relearn movement and sometimes even address

issues like nail care and foot health that people haven’t considered. If we can prepare you beforehand and support you afterwards, recovery is so much smoother.”

The clinic’s broad approach reflects Alex’s belief that podiatry is often misunderstood. “We don’t just trim toenails,” she says. “We deal with biomechanics, dermatology, wound care, sports injuries and orthotics to realign the back, hips and knees. I wish more people understood the breadth of what we do.”

WE DEAL WITH BIOMECHANICS, DERMATOLOGY, WOUND CARE, SPORTS INJURIES AND ORTHOTICS TO REALIGN THE BACK, HIPS AND KNEES

Sole and Beauty also serves an ageing population, treating everything from routine foot care to complex, non-healing wounds. “Not everyone fits neatly into NHS pathways,” Alex notes. “We see many people who just want to stay independent. If we can keep someone walking, confident and out of hospital, that’s everything.”

Alongside patient care, Alex is equally driven to support the next generation of practitioners. She has created a nurturing environment for professionals who may lack the confidence or client base to go it alone.

“This is a place where we can nurture practitioners,” she says. “If they’ve got the skills but need that in-between step, I’ll show them how to build their confidence, attract clients and run their own practice within a busy hub.”

With demand growing and waiting lists lengthening, Alex is keen to expand the team. “We’ve got space, and we have a very large case load,” she adds. “I’d love more podiatrists, physiotherapists, acupuncturists – anyone who wants a welcoming, supportive place to work.”

Ultimately, Sole and Beauty is built around a simple message. “It’s not a luxury to look after your feet,” Alex says. “It’s essential. Because if you can keep walking, you can keep your independence – and that’s one of the most important things for your health.” n

MAKING A DIFFERENCE…

Founded in 2020 by David Lyons, award-winning Tackling Minds has become a powerful force for positive change, using fishing as a way to support mental health

What began as one man’s personal struggle, Tackling Minds has developed into an organisation making a real difference in communities across the region promoting mental wellbeing and rebuilding confidence.

Recently honoured with the King’s Award for Voluntary Service, the highest accolade a voluntary organisation can receive, founder David Lyons was recently invited to Buckingham Palace as he explains: “The recognition is for all our incredible volunteers who give up their own time to support people who may be struggling with mental health, addiction, isolation and other life challenges.”

It was David’s second visit to the palace –back in 2023 he was named a Coronation Champion from over 5,000 nominees in recognition of Tackling Minds’ work around mental health and addiction recovery and

also getting fishing recognised by the NHS. David’s inspiration for launching Tackling Minds came from his own experiences with mental health challenges and the healing role fishing has played in his life.

He explains: “I founded Tackling Minds as I had my own mental health problems which took me down a dark path. The love of fishing had never left me so it was somewhat of a light bulb moment. I knew how much fishing helped me and how much it could help others in terms of support.”

Through organised fishing sessions, peer support and volunteering opportunities, the charity provides safe and welcoming environments where people can talk openly and learn new skills.

The organisation has recently expanded its work into Lancashire with two new projects. One of these is at Turbary House Fishery where volunteers deliver fishing sessions supporting prisoners from HMP

Kirkham, helping with rehabilitation, social inclusion and introducing people to fishing as a positive outlet to support mental health and wellbeing once back in the community. What makes the project especially meaningful is that some volunteers have walked that same path themselves. Having rebuilt their own lives, they are now supporting others.

The second Lancashire initiative is taking place at Byers Farm in collaboration with Spring North and Cancer Alliance. The project encourages conversations about cancer awareness while volunteers provide information about cancer screening during fishing sessions, which helps break down stigma surrounding men’s health and encouraging people to seek support.

As David says: “You only have to listen to the passion in volunteers’ voices to understand what it’s all about.” n

Anyone interested in getting involved, whether by learning to fish or volunteering, is encouraged to contact the charity at fishing@tacklingminds.org or visit the Tackling Minds website for more information.

A NEW CHAPTER IN AESTHETIC EXCELLENCE

Based in Fulwood, Contour has grown into one of Preston’s most trusted aesthetics clinics, driven by passion, innovation and a personalised approach to every client.

Photography: Michael Porter

Founder Liv Hindmoor launched the business in 2017 at Barton Grange Hotel, aged just 20. What began as a small venture has evolved into a thriving clinic, now celebrating five years in its Fulwood premises and approaching a decade in business.

“When I first started, I would never have thought we’d get here this quickly,” says Liv. “But we’ve grown by listening to our clients.”

That client-led philosophy continues to shape everything Contour does, from treatment choices to investment in new technology.

This summer, the clinic is unveiling a complete rebrand, including a new website, logo and visual identity, alongside the launch of a cutting-edge treatment device.

“It feels like an evolution,” Liv explains. “Everything is coming together and upgrading

at the same time and it’s really exciting.” Today, Contour focuses on three specialist areas: anti-ageing and advanced facials, body contouring and laser hair removal. Every treatment is designed to support long-term skin health, confidence and natural-looking results for both women and men.

At the heart of the clinic’s approach is consultation. Every client journey begins with an in-depth one-to-one discussion, allowing the team to understand individual goals, concerns and lifestyle factors before recommending a treatment plan.

THE CONSULTATION

ISN’T A BOX TO TICK –IT’S WHERE THE REAL TREATMENT BEGINS

“The consultation isn’t a box to tick – it’s where the real treatment begins,” Liv says. “When you truly understand someone’s goals and expectations, you can create results that look natural, last longer and genuinely make a difference.”

This emphasis on education and transparency has become increasingly important as clients become more informed about aesthetics. Contour sees its role not only as a treatment provider but as a trusted guide,

helping clients make confident, informed decisions about their skin and wellbeing.

The clinic treats a wide range of concerns, including fine lines, loss of elasticity, breakouts and uneven skin tone, with treatments tailored to suit all skin types and tones. The focus is on effective results without the extended downtime often associated with more invasive procedures.

One of the clinic’s most exciting additions is 3D Dermaforce, a treatment that combines microneedling and radio frequency technology to stimulate collagen production, improve skin texture and tighten the skin. Suitable for both face and body, it reflects Contour’s commitment to investing in advanced, results-driven technology.

While anti-ageing and advanced facial treatments form a major part of the business today, body contouring remains at the heart of Contour’s identity. In fact, it is where Liv’s journey into aesthetics began.

“The whole reason I opened the clinic is because of my own experience,” she says. “I had struggled with my weight and it made me realise how important it is to look at health holistically – nutrition, lifestyle and treatments working together.”

Contour offers a comprehensive nonsurgical approach to body shaping, using advanced technology to address concerns such as stubborn fat deposits, loss of skin firmness and post-pregnancy body changes. Treatments are tailored to each client, regardless of age, shape or starting point.

“Our machine does pretty much everything you’d want from body contouring in one,” Liv explains. “So, whatever your size, shape or starting point, we can help.”

A key advantage of body contouring is

the ability to focus on specific areas that may not respond to diet and exercise alone.

“It allows us to target particular areas, like the stomach, and work alongside your lifestyle,” says Liv.

WE WANT PEOPLE TO FEEL COMFORTABLE, BUT ALSO CONFIDENT THAT WE KNOW EXACTLY WHAT WE’RE DOING

The clinic also offers laser hair removal, one of the fastest-growing treatments in aesthetics. Using advanced triple-wavelength technology, Contour can safely and effectively treat all skin types, offering clients a convenient alternative to shaving and waxing.

“Laser hair appointments can be as quick as 10 minutes, so people often come on their

lunch break,” says Liv. “Even a full-body session is manageable, and there’s little to no downtime.”

As the business has expanded, maintaining a welcoming atmosphere has remained a priority. “One of my biggest aims is to always balance being friendly with being professional,” Liv says. “We want people to feel comfortable, but also confident that we know exactly what we’re doing.”

That confidence is underpinned by ongoing training, experience and a commitment to staying at the forefront of an ever-evolving industry.

As Contour continues to grow and introduce new treatments, one thing remains unchanged: its dedication to personalised client care. “No matter who walks through the door, we’ll be able to help,” Liv says.

“That’s how I started and that’s how it will always be.”

In a fast-moving industry often driven by trends, Contour stands out for its client-first approach, combining expertise, advanced technology and genuine care to help people look and feel their best. n

This accessibility has fuelled a boom in AI mental health apps. Some offer guided meditation or stress reduction, others provide mood tracking or journaling. Increasingly, they aim to create genuine emotional companionship.

And that is where complexity arises. Supporters argue these tools could help solve a real crisis. If AI can calm someone during a panic attack or help process emotions it offers meaningful benefit. Critics, however, warn society may be drifting into emotionally risky territory.

MIND MATTERS

Therapeutic coach Lynn Scholes looks at the rise of AI therapy –and asks can a chatbot really care?

For me, it seems no time at all since I first heard the term AI. Yet it is already used by millions every day, infiltrating psychology and counselling in ways many would have thought impossible. It has advantages and limitations, so let’s take a closer look.

A few years ago, the idea of opening up emotionally to a chatbot would have sounded strange, maybe even dystopian. Today, millions of people do exactly that. Whether venting about a stressful day, managing anxiety, tracking moods, or seeking reassurance, AI therapy apps and support bots are becoming part of everyday life.

So, what exactly are they? AI therapy tools are digital systems designed to simulate aspects of emotional support or counselling. Some use recognised therapeutic methods, such as cognitive behavioural therapy, guiding users through exercises to challenge

anxious thoughts or negative patterns. Others are more conversational, acting like supportive companions that listen, respond and remember past interactions.

Emotional support bots differ slightly. They focus less on formal therapy and more on companionship, encouragement and check-ins. Think of them as part diary, part coach and part endlessly patient friend.

What sets these tools apart from older self-help apps is the conversation. Instead of clicking through generic advice pages, users can interact naturally, asking questions, sharing worries, or describing how they feel in real time. AI responds instantly, often in a calm, empathetic and reassuring tone. For many, that experience feels surprisingly real.

Part of the reason these systems are growing is simple practicality. Mental health services are under enormous pressure. Therapy can be expensive, waiting lists long and many people still feel uncomfortable discussing mental health. AI, by comparison, is available immediately, 24 hours a day, without appointments, awkward introductions or fear of judgement.

For younger generations, chatting with AI can feel natural. Many spend large parts of their lives communicating through screens, whether texting friends, using social media or working online.

Privacy also plays a role. Some users admit fears or insecurities to a machine more easily than a person. A chatbot will not interrupt, judge or make someone feel ashamed.

AI can imitate empathy but does not truly understand human emotion. It generates responses through algorithms, not compassion. That distinction matters.

Some psychologists fear users could become dependent on AI, replacing messy human relationships with predictable digital ones. Human connections involve disagreement, compromise and emotional risk. AI companions are endlessly supportive, lacking real-world challenges. Stories already exist of users forming deep attachments to bots, treating them as partners or close friends but critics worry it may encourage withdrawal from real relationships.

Safety is another concern. Mental health is complex and AI can misunderstand context, give poor advice, or respond inappropriately. Questions of accountability remain – if AI offers harmful guidance, who is responsible?

Privacy also matters. Conversations often include deeply personal details. Users may not realise how sensitive data could be stored, analysed or used commercially.

Despite concerns, AI therapy continues to advance. Developers increasingly see AI not just as a mental health tool, but as a long-term emotional wellness companion.

AI therapy is neither a miracle nor a nightmare. It reflects modern life. These tools exist because people want comfort, reassurance and someone – or something – to listen, but the line between technology and emotion is thinning every day. n

SUMMER, SUN AND SHARED PARENTING

Emma Procter, Family Law Partner at Farleys, explains what separated parents should consider when planning summer holidays in the UK or abroad

As the summer holidays approach, many families are busy making plans for time away with their children. Whether it’s a fortnight in Spain, a caravan trip to Cornwall or days out closer to home, holidays are an important opportunity to make memories and spend quality time together. However, for separated families, travel arrangements

can sometimes create uncertainty or disagreement if expectations have not been discussed in advance.

From a family law perspective, communication and planning are key.

AGREEING PLANS EARLY

If you share parental responsibility for your child, major decisions relating to them should ideally be agreed between both parents. While UK staycations are usually more straightforward, it is still sensible to confirm holiday arrangements early, particularly where they may affect existing contact schedules, childcare arrangements or special occasions.

TRAVELLING ABROAD

Travelling abroad can involve additional legal considerations. In most cases, a parent cannot take a child out of England and Wales without the consent of everyone else who has parental responsibility, unless there is already a court order allowing them to do so.

Where permission is needed, this should be obtained well in advance of travel dates to avoid unnecessary stress or disappointment. It is always advisable to provide the other parent with clear details of the trip, including flight times, accommodation information, emergency contact details and dates of travel. Sharing itineraries can help build trust and reassurance, especially where co-parenting relationships are still developing following separation.

PROVIDE CLEAR DETAILS OF THE TRIP, INCLUDING FLIGHT TIMES, ACCOMMODATION INFORMATION, EMERGENCY CONTACT DETAILS AND DATES OF TRAVEL

WHEN PARENTS DISAGREE

Disagreements can sometimes arise if one parent is concerned about the destination, travel safety, or the possibility of a child not being returned to the UK. In these situations, seeking legal advice early is important. Often, concerns can be resolved through constructive discussion or mediation, avoiding the need for court proceedings. If an agreement cannot be reached, the court can step in to determine what arrangements are in the child’s best interests.

It is also worth remembering that holidays can be emotional for children adjusting to family separation. Parents should try to avoid placing children in the middle of disagreements or asking them to pass messages between adults. Keeping arrangements child-focused and cooperative wherever possible can make the experience more positive for everyone involved.

At Farleys Solicitors, we regularly advise separated parents on child arrangements, parental responsibility and holiday disputes. With early advice and open communication, most families can navigate summer holiday planning smoothly, allowing parents and children alike to enjoy a well-earned break. n

FROM NEONATAL UNIT TO MARATHON FINISH LINE

The team at Blue Skies Hospitals Fund is celebrating a remarkable achievement as local runner James Schofield crossed the finish line of the London Marathon, inspired by a cause very close to his heart

James completed the 26.2-mile course in an impressive time of 04:23:35. While the physical challenge was significant, it’s the story behind his run that makes the achievement truly special. In June last year, James and his family welcomed his daughter Indie into the world at Blackpool Victoria Hospital. Arriving 10 weeks early, Indie required specialist care in the Neonatal Unit.

“We knew the months ahead would be

tough, and Indie had a fight on her hands,” James shared.

During those early days, James also received long-awaited news, after 10 years of trying, he had secured a place in the London Marathon.

“The timing was perfect,” he said. “I knew I had to do it for the ward and of course for Indie.”

After 43 days of care, Indie was able to go home. Determined to give back, James turned his marathon place into a fundraising mission, raising an incredible £3,000 for the Neonatal Unit.

Funds raised through challenges like James’ help provide enhancements beyond standard NHS provision. One recent example is a Cerebral Function Monitor (CFM), funded by Blue Skies thanks to supporter generosity. This £25,689 piece of equipment allows staff to monitor a baby’s brain activity on-site, avoiding the need for transfer and keeping families together during those critical early days.

“James is a total inspiration to us all,” said Kila Redfearn, Head of Charity for Blue Skies.

James’ story is a powerful reminder of how personal experiences can inspire extraordinary generosity. If you’d like to support patients like Indie and help shape the future of neonatal care across Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre, we’d love to hear from you. n

HOPE 52 WALK RAISES FUNDS FOR CANCER RESEARCH UK

Preston College’s Hope 52 charity challenge has raised more than £17,000 for Cancer Research UK, bringing together staff, students, friends, families and supporters in a powerful show of solidarity against cancer.

Created in response to the profound impact cancer has had across the college community, Hope 52 was designed to honour colleagues, loved ones and friends affected by the disease, while raising vital funds for life-saving research.

At the heart of the initiative was an ambitious 52.2-mile walk, which began at Haigh Hall in Wigan, passed through Clitheroe and concluded at Preston College. To ensure the event was accessible to as many people as possible, a range of shorter routes were also available, including 26-mile, 10-mile and 5-mile challenges, as well as the final College Mile. This enabled supporters of all ages and abilities to get involved and contribute to the cause.

CEO RUNS LONDON MARATHON

Booths Chief Executive Nigel Murray has raised £14,500 for Cure Leukaemia after completing the London Marathon alongside his son Jack, as part of wider fundraising efforts by colleagues, suppliers and partners across the business.

The father-and-son duo took on the 26.2-mile challenge just days after celebrating their shared birthday, with Jack running the marathon shortly after turning 18. Together, they combined a personal milestone with a powerful fundraising effort in support of Cure Leukaemia – a charity Booths has supported for more than five years.

Their achievement forms part of a broader programme of fundraising by Team Booths, which has raised more half a million pounds for the charity to date. This includes funding a dedicated blood cancer clinical trials nurse at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, helping connect local patients with access to pioneering treatments.

SUPPORTING LIVES AFTER BRAIN INJURY

Headway Central Lancashire is a charity founded in 2010 by Liz Bamber after recognising the need for specialist support for people affected by brain injury and trauma. Inspired by her son’s experience, the organisation aims to ensure that individuals and families do not face these life - changing challenges alone.

The charity supports people with acquired brain injuries caused by accidents, strokes, tumours and other neurological conditions. Its main aim is to reduce worries so patients and families can focus on recovery and rehabilitation. Headway provides emotional support, guidance on welfare benefits and finances, help with employment issues and access to legal information. It also assists with navigating rehabilitation and offers continued support after hospital discharge. Through community activities, the charity helps individuals rebuild confidence, reduce isolation and connect with others, providing reassurance that ongoing support is always available.

This fabulous event gets bigger and better every year. The emphasis is very much on ‘having a go’ whether you are a newcomer to country sports or a seasoned professional. The event features fly fishing, clay pigeon shooting, horse shows, carriage driving, gundog scurries and dog shows.

The Food Theatre, compered by the everentertaining Peter Gott of Sillfield Farm, features demonstrations by celebrity chefs including ‘This Morning’s’ Phil Vickery, game specialist Tim Maddams and wild food guru, Lancashire-based Dominique’s Kitchen. There is artisan produce to sample and buy, as well as crafts and lots of fantastic top-brand fashions.

Clay shooting and fly fishing are both increasingly popular sports and, if you have never had a go (but would like to), we have fantastic experts at the Festival that can help you with expert tuition and tips.

Blackpool Sporting Clays have been serving the clay shooting community since 2000 and, as well as organising fun competitions for experienced shots with great prizes over the weekend, they’re on hand to help beginners and new starters with all the equipment you’ll need to have a go – no matter your age or ability.

Or you could get hooked on fly fishing? With the site’s own dedicated pond – developed with both local wildlife and fly fishers in mind – instructors from GAIA (the Game Angling Instructors Association) are on hand to teach some of the basics, as well as advanced techniques, to aspiring fisherfolk of the future.

FOOD THEATRE HIGHLIGHTS

ITV This Morning’s Phil Vickery is a wellknown Michelin-starred chef and popular TV personality. But did you know he’s also a farmer with roots in the North and a writer and author who really knows his game? In all senses.

We’re delighted to welcome this multi-talented chef back to this year’s event, where he’ll be demonstrating some of the fabulous recipes from his book: ‘Game: A Modern Approach to Preparing, Cooking and Curing’. He will be joined by a host of butchers, experts and chefs including game specialist Tim Maddams and local foraging queen Dominique Ashford from food theatre sponsors Esse who produce British range cookers.

ALL THINGS EQUINE

Horse shows and equitation have their own dedicated part of the event for enthusiasts and on Saturday the Working Hunter Classes, sponsored by Shorefields Supplies, take centre stage. Sunday sees the heavy horses, ridden and in-hand classes with Championships and Supreme Champion awarded on both days.

There’ll also be Carriage Driving competitions organised by the Northern Carriage Driving Display Team, who will also be putting in regular appearances in the Main Arena.

NEW ERA…

Beeston Manor unveils a stunning new extension, blending heritage and luxury, marking an exciting new chapter for this historic venue

The iconic Beeston Manor, nestled in the heart of rolling green countryside, is entering a vibrant new era. The family-owned venue has recently completed a spectacular two-year project –the creation of The Meadows, a beautiful extension that brings five new luxuriously appointed suites, all with their own unique style and theme, to the estate. It is a bold step forward for Beeston, blending timeless country charm with contemporary luxury and marks a significant chapter in the history of the venue, complementing the original

Grade II listed barn conversion, while setting the stage for an ambitious future.

THE MEADOWS HAS BEEN THOUGHTFULLY DESIGNED TO BLEND THE HERITAGE AND LEGACY OF BEESTON MANOR WITH THE NEEDS OF MODERN COUPLES

Owner and Director John Bickerstaffe, who refurbished the original manor two decades

ago, has overseen the design and construction of the new extension, ensuring that the Bickerstaffe vision continues to shine. Stone sourced from the family quarry was used in the build, adding a timeless touch to this contemporary space. The result is a stylish, private retreat that perfectly balances country charm with luxurious extravagance.

The new suites in The Meadows feature three rooms for the bride, her friends and family. Elevating the bridal experience to a new level, the suites have been designed for comfort combining style with elegance, each decorated in soft shades of beige and cream. All feature outdoor hot tubs and terraces, offering sweeping views of the surrounding fields and countryside, with each suite named after local birds that can be spotted nearby, reflecting the serene, natural surroundings.

Also in the new extension is The Nest featuring a dedicated hair and make-up space

and a lounge with an impressive dining area where the bridal party can enjoy drinks and dine the evening before the wedding day.

A separate suite for the bride is a haven of luxury, featuring fabulous lighting, mirrors, and hanging rails to ensure preparation runs smoothly.

For the groom, the Den in the main venue, offers an ultra-masculine retreat with a private bathroom, air hockey table and ample hanging space for suits. Interestingly, The Den and The Nest are located at opposite ends of the venue, providing both parties with privacy while a long, glazed walk-way connecting the new extension to the original manor house, creates a stunning extended aisle, allowing the bride to make a dramatic, unforgettable entrance with wide open views of the countryside beyond.

WE HAVE A VERY CHILLED COUNTRY VIBE –WEDDINGS ARE NOW A TWO-DAY EXPERIENCE

A new open plan bridal suite features soft neutral shades and lighting, a luxurious free-standing roll top bath, walk-in shower, decorative mirrors and stunning chandeliers.

On the terrace is a private hot tub – it is a calm, relaxing space that really has the wow factor.

The manor house itself continues to offer its celebrated wedding ceremony space for up to 125 guests, or couples can choose to hold their ceremony outside in the stunning grounds, overlooking the rolling Lancashire countryside. Beeston Manor has long been a sought-after wedding venue and bookings are already being taken for 2028 and 2029, testament to its enduring popularity and reputation for excellence.

Owner Janet Bickerstaffe explains the philosophy behind the new extension: “It’s all about blending legacy with what today’s brides want. We have a very chilled country vibe – weddings are now a two-day experience.”

Every detail has been considered to create a seamless and enjoyable experience for both couples and their guests. Director Amy Scarr adds: “We know everything has to be perfect and as Beeston’s wedding planner, I totally understand that the guest experience is paramount. Whether it’s cocktails on the terrace or a specially arranged pre-wedding dinner, we can organise anything to make the stay unforgettable.”

While the opening of The Meadows represents a new chapter for Beeston Manor, it is far from the final one. Future plans are already underway for the main rooms and bedrooms in the original building. With each enhancement, Beeston Manor continues to evolve while preserving the charm and character that has made it a hidden gem for weddings in Lancashire. “We frequently get couples commenting on Beeston saying they love the atmosphere here – the feeling and warmth that the manor has,” says Amy, highlighting the transformation that this extension has brought to the venue.

With The Meadows now complete, Beeston Manor offers an unmatched combination of luxury, flexibility and timeless beauty. From the breathtaking suites and the dedicated bride and groom’s spaces to the charming outdoor areas, every element has been designed to make celebrations of any kind unforgettable. For guests seeking a venue that combines tradition with luxurious, contemporary style, Beeston Manor’s next chapter promises to be even more exciting. n

BUILT FOR GENERATIONS

The story of The Horns Dam is one of resilience, family and reinvention, where generations of farming heritage continue shaping Lancashire’s rural future

Set in the Lancashire countryside on the edge of Goosnargh, The Horns Dam is far more than a peaceful fishing lake and holiday destination. At its heart, it is the story of a local family who adapted with the times while staying deeply connected to the land around them.

For more than a century, six generations of the Fletcher family have farmed nearby Harrisons Farm, building a life shaped by hard work, resilience and rural tradition. Like many farming families across Lancashire, their connection to the countryside runs through their heritage, with farming forming both a livelihood and a way of life.

Then came the challenges that changed British farming forever.

The late 1990s and early 2000s brought enormous uncertainty through BSE and the Foot and Mouth crisis. Farms across the country faced financial pressure and difficult decisions and many family businesses were forced to rethink their future entirely.

Rather than standing still, the Fletcher family decided to look forward.

When The Horns Dam came onto the market in 1999, sitting alongside their grazing land, they saw an opportunity to

create something new while preserving the rural setting they knew so well.

What followed was not a dramatic reinvention overnight, but a gradual and thoughtful evolution.

DIVERSIFICATION IS OFTEN SPOKEN ABOUT IN PRACTICAL TERMS, BUT HERE IT FEELS FAR MORE NATURAL. THE TRANSITION HAS HAPPENED STEADILY, WITH GENUINE CARE FOR THE LANDSCAPE

The site itself already carried centuries of history. Records suggest The Horns Dam dates back to at least 1273, while archaeological discoveries nearby point to human activity in the area stretching back thousands of years. There is a sense that people have always been

drawn to this landscape and particularly to the water itself.

Over the past two decades, the family have carefully developed the site into a much-loved rural retreat, while protecting the peaceful atmosphere that makes it so special. Today, The Horns Dam is home to three fishing lakes, touring pitches, seasonal caravan stays and it is an adult-only Caravan & Motorhome Club certified location.

Yet despite its growth, the site has never lost its character.

Visitors return because it still feels personal. Mornings begin quietly beside the lakes, with mist rising from the water and anglers setting up for the day. Even though the site sits only a short drive from the M6, it feels completely removed from the pace of modern life.

That balance between accessibility and tranquillity has become part of its appeal.

The Horns Dam also reflects a wider story taking place across Lancashire, where farming families continue finding new ways to protect both their businesses and the countryside around them. Diversification is often spoken about in practical terms, but here it feels far more natural. The transition has happened steadily and with genuine care for the landscape.

The Fletcher family are also keenly aware of the role businesses like theirs now play within the wider rural economy, supporting local pubs, shops, restaurants and surrounding communities across Goosnargh, Longridge and the Ribble Valley area.

The next chapter is already beginning.

In 2023, the family introduced a luxury static holiday home development designed to sit comfortably within the countryside setting rather than dominate it. It is another measured step forward and one that reflects changing lifestyles, with more people seeking slower escapes and stronger connections to nature.

MORNINGS BEGIN

QUIETLY BESIDE THE LAKES, WITH MIST RISING FROM THE WATER AND ANGLERS SETTING UP FOR THE DAYIT FEELS COMPLETELY REMOVED FROM THE PACE OF MODERN LIFE

Importantly, the vision for The Horns Dam remains rooted in the same values that shaped it from the beginning. Growth has never come at the expense of atmosphere. The aim has always been to create somewhere people genuinely enjoy returning to.

For those looking for a more permanent base in the Lancashire countryside, a limited number of static holiday homes remain available, offering owners the opportunity to enjoy this setting throughout the seasons.

In many ways, the story of The Horns Dam is ultimately one of quiet resilience. At a time when many traditional family farms have disappeared altogether, the Fletcher family found a way to evolve while holding onto the character and community spirit that mattered most.

Today, The Horns Dam feels less like a business success story and more like something increasingly rare – a place built patiently over generations, shaped by family, countryside and a genuine sense of care. n

MAKING LANCASHIRE PROUD

People, groups and organisations making a real difference across Lancashire are set to be recognised through the new Pride in Lancashire Awards

Launched by Lancashire County Council, the awards will celebrate residents, volunteers, businesses and organisations that go above and beyond to support their communities. From bringing people together and leading local activities to caring for others and improving neighbourhoods, the awards aim to highlight the many ways people help Lancashire thrive.

The awards will be hosted by Lancashire’s own Gregg Stevenson, a Paralympic gold medallist and Armed Forces veteran, who will help honour those making a positive impact across the county.

Nominations are now open, with residents encouraged to put forward inspiring individuals, groups, businesses and organisations whose dedication, kindness and community spirit deserve recognition.

Gregg Stevenson said: “As a Paralympic gold medallist and Armed Forces veteran, I know the value of hard work, resilience and supporting others. I’m really proud to be hosting this year’s Pride in Lancashire Awards.

“We’re looking for people who go above and beyond and who deserve recognition for the difference they make. There are so many

people across Lancashire quietly doing incredible things in their communities and this is our chance to recognise them and say thank you.”

WE’RE LOOKING FOR PEOPLE WHO GO ABOVE AND BEYOND AND WHO DESERVE RECOGNITION FOR THE DIFFERENCE THEY MAKE

The awards form part of Lancashire County Council’s Civic Pride action plan, which focuses on practical action and community participation. The initiative recognises that small, everyday improvements can make a big difference to how people feel about their local area, while celebrating the people and communities that make Lancashire special.

Winners will be celebrated at a special awards ceremony on Lancashire Day,

27th November. Each category winner will receive a Pride in Lancashire Award, with an overall winner also announced.

County Councillor Ella Worthington, cabinet member for Civic Pride, said: “The Pride in Lancashire Awards are a chance to celebrate the people who make our county such a special place. Across Lancashire, there are residents, volunteers, community groups, organisations and businesses who give their time, energy and care to help others and strengthen the places they call home.”

Nominating someone is simple and open to everyone. Residents can complete a nomination form explaining who they are nominating, why they deserve recognition and the positive impact they have made in their community.

Entries will be reviewed by an independent judging panel made up of people with strong links to Lancashire and a shared commitment to celebrating community achievement. n

AFTER SEPARATION: NAVIGATING PARENTAL RESPONSIBILITY

Forbes’ family solicitor Lucy Whittaker explains about parental responsibility when parents separate

When parents separate, parental responsibility can be misunderstood. It means the legal duties and authority a person has in relation to a child’s welfare. Knowing who has parental responsibility can help parents make informed decisions and reduce conflict.

What is Parental Responsibility?

Parental Responsibility, often called “PR”, is defined by section 3(1) of the Children Act 1989 as:

“All the rights, duties, powers, responsibilities and authority which by law a parent of a child has in relation to the child and his property.”

In practice, PR gives a person legal authority to be involved in important decisions about

a child’s upbringing, with the child’s best interests at the centre.

These decisions can include:

• education and choice of school

• medical treatment and access to records

• a child’s name, religion, passport or travel abroad

• decisions about a child’s property or finances

Where more than one person has parental responsibility, they generally have equal status unless a court order says otherwise.

The law also recognises that a child’s welfare is usually supported by both parents being involved, unless that would be unsafe or inappropriate.

Who Has Parental Responsibility?

A child’s mother automatically has parental responsibility from birth. Fathers usually have it if they were married to the mother when the child was born, or if they are named on the birth certificate for births registered in England and Wales on or after 1st December 2003.

A second female parent may also have parental responsibility if she was married to, or in a civil partnership with, the child’s biological mother at the time of conception. Step-parents, grandparents, wider family members and carers do not automatically have parental responsibility but may acquire it by agreement or court order.

Obtaining Parental Responsibility

An unmarried father who does not already have parental responsibility can obtain it by jointly registering the birth, entering into a Parental Responsibility Agreement, or applying to the court for a Parental Responsibility Order.

Step-parents can also acquire parental responsibility by agreement with those who already have it, or by court order.

What

Happens if People with Parental Responsibility Disagree?

People with parental responsibility may still disagree on major decisions, such as schooling, medical treatment, religion, foreign travel or where a child should live. Where possible, parents are encouraged to resolve disputes through discussion or family mediation before involving the court.

If agreement cannot be reached, the Family Court can decide specific issues affecting the child’s upbringing, with the child’s welfare as its overriding consideration.

Why Understanding Parental Responsibility Matters

Parental responsibility helps ensure key decisions about a child’s welfare, education and future are made in their best interests.

For separated parents, understanding it can reduce misunderstandings and support constructive decision-making. If disputes arise, early legal advice can help clarify rights, responsibilities and available options.

How Forbes Solicitors Can Help

WHY BUSINESSES ARE CHOOSING WYRE

Businesses rarely choose a location based on one factor alone. They look for opportunity, connectivity, quality of life, access to customers and a supportive environment in which to grow

Increasingly, Wyre is offering exactly that. Known for its modern coastline, bustling market towns and vibrant visitor economy, Wyre has long been a destination for residents and visitors alike. Today, however, it is also becoming a destination for entrepreneurs, growing businesses and inward investment.

Our hospitality, tourism and wellness sectors continue to attract customers from across Lancashire and beyond, supporting independent retailers, cafés, restaurants, accommodation providers and local attractions. The benefits extend far beyond the visitor economy itself, creating opportunities for suppliers, professional services, tradespeople, creative businesses and local manufacturers.

At the heart of this is a strong sense of place. Through Discover Wyre, we continue to promote everything our borough has

to offer, encouraging more people to visit, spend locally and support our town centres and high streets. Businesses can also access our free We Are Wyre Toolkit, helping them showcase their connection to the area and become part of a collective story that celebrates Wyre as a great place to live, work, collaborate, visit and invest.

ALONGSIDE OUR VISITOR ECONOMY, WYRE IS ALSO HOME TO ONE OF LANCASHIRE’S MOST SIGNIFICANT EMPLOYMENT AND INVESTMENT LOCATIONS

Alongside our visitor economy, Wyre is also home to one of Lancashire’s most significant employment and investment locations. Hillhouse Enterprise Zone

in Thornton-Cleveleys forms part of the Lancashire Advanced Manufacturing and Energy Cluster and is attracting investment in advanced manufacturing, polymers, chemicals, engineering and emerging clean energy technologies. Invest in Wyre is our business facing website covering start up and growth support, sector support and much more.

Supporting business growth remains a key priority. Our continued support programme focuses on areas that businesses tell us matter most: AI and emerging technologies, customer insight and digital marketing, leadership and sustainability. This support is designed to help businesses become more productive, resilient and competitive.

When our businesses grow, the benefits are felt well beyond the shopfront, office or factory floor. They bring people into our towns, create local opportunities, strengthen supply chains and help keep money moving through the area. Over time, that confidence supports the wider life of our communities too, from busy high streets and local events to the places and spaces people value every day. n

For anyone looking to start, grow, invest or simply be part of Wyre’s business story, the support is here. Email: regeneration@wyre.gov.uk and the Business Engagement Team will be in touch. investinwyre.co.uk

SUMMER MOMENTUM

New residents, beautiful lakeside lodges and a flourishing community are helping Goosnargh Lodge Park enjoy its most exciting summer yet, writes

Tedd Walmsley

Some conversations are best had away from the office. On a warm summer morning, I found myself sitting with Sales Manager Stephen O’Hanlon overlooking one of the retained greens from the original golf course at Goosnargh Lodge Park. Coffee in hand and birdsong all around us, it felt the perfect setting to catch up on what has been a remarkable few months.

Having bought here myself, I have watched the park evolve at close quarters. Liz and I spend part of our time at Goosnargh and every return seems to reveal something new. The landscaping becomes more refined, another lodge appears in position and the sense of community grows stronger.

Stephen agrees that momentum has gathered pace: “The open weekend in May exceeded expectations,” he told me. “We welcomed visitors from across the region and the response was incredibly positive.”

WE’VE ALWAYS BELIEVED IN WHAT WE’RE CREATING HERE. THE EXCITING THING NOW IS SEEING PEOPLE EXPERIENCE IT FOR THEMSELVES

That enthusiasm has translated into sales. More than half of Phase One has now been sold and several further purchasers are progressing through the process with

decisions expected over the coming weeks.

Walking around the park today, it is easy to understand the appeal. The vision that first attracted buyers is now becoming reality.

The community is beginning to establish itself naturally. Owners stop for conversations, friendships are forming and there is a genuine sense of people enjoying a shared lifestyle while retaining the privacy that drew many of them here in the first place.

The park itself continues to mature. The grounds team have added greater definition throughout the site and the attention to detail is increasingly apparent. The community garden is taking shape, while the forthcoming sauna, steam room and gym will add another dimension to daily life for residents.

One of the most exciting developments is around the main lake where a collection of impressive new show lodges is arriving.

These homes demonstrate the breadth of choice available to prospective purchasers

and highlight the quality of manufacturers now represented on the park. With lodge prices ranging from £149,950 to £389,995, buyers can choose from a broad range of styles, locations and specifications.

Among them is the Foresters Lodge from Prestige Homeseeker. Contemporary, spacious and beautifully finished, it combines elegant design with practical living spaces and offers a wonderful example of modern lodge living.

Joining it is the Lakewood from Victory Leisure Homes, a lodge that has earned a strong reputation for its stylish interior, open-plan layout and welcoming atmosphere.

There is also continued demand for the ever-popular Kos from Your Retreats. Built locally in Lancashire, it has become a favourite with buyers seeking contemporary styling, quality craftsmanship and a layout suited equally to weekends away or longer stays.

Several lodges around the main lake have already been sold and occupied, creating what is becoming one of the most desirable areas of the park. The lake views, generous spacing and sense of tranquillity combine to create something genuinely special.

For those wanting to enjoy the lifestyle immediately, a small number of front-line show homes remain available for purchase. With summer now in full swing, they offer a rare opportunity to move straight into an established setting without waiting for a bespoke lodge to be delivered and commissioned.

Of course, much of the attraction lies beyond the lodges themselves.

As Stephen and I sit overlooking the green, the soundtrack is constant. Birdsong drifts across the park while wildlife moves quietly through the landscape. The dawn chorus here is something to behold and each visit seems to reveal another species or sighting.

The lakes, many of which are original features of the site, are being carefully restored and brought back to life. Over time they will become a haven for wildlife while enhancing the beauty and biodiversity of the park itself. The original golf holes are also being rediscovered and sympathetically

redefined, reconnecting the landscape with an important part of its history.

Only recently, Liz and I hosted friends for a barbecue on our deck overlooking the park. What started as a relaxed summer evening quickly turned into a wildlife watch. Binoculars were passed around as guests competed to spot buzzards overhead, woodpeckers in nearby trees and hares moving across the grassland. As the sun began to set, the conversation turned to how rare it is to find somewhere that feels so peaceful while remaining so accessible.

That accessibility is another of Goosnargh’s strengths. The surrounding countryside offers some of Lancashire’s finest walking and outdoor pursuits.

Longridge and Garstang provide excellent shopping, cafés and everyday conveniences. The coast can be reached in under half-anhour and the motorway network places the wider North West within easy reach.

An important factor for many owners is the park’s 12-month holiday licence, allowing them to enjoy their lodge throughout the year. Whether visiting for extended breaks, seasonal escapes or spontaneous weekends away, residents appreciate the flexibility that year-round access provides.

As our coffee comes to an end and another group of prospective buyers arrives for a tour, Stephen reflects on what lies ahead.

“We’ve always believed in what we’re creating here,” he says. “The exciting thing now is seeing people experience it for themselves.”

Looking around, it is hard to disagree. The community is growing. The landscape is maturing. New lodges are arriving and the lakes are coming back to life.

Most importantly, Goosnargh Lodge Park is developing a character all of its own.

For Liz and me, every visit strengthens the belief that we made the right decision. What began as an attractive proposition has become a place where people can enjoy space, nature, friendship and a gentler pace of life.

Judging by the summer ahead, the story is only just beginning. n

LANCASHIRE SHINES AT GRADUATE FASHION WEEK

The University of Lancashire has firmly placed itself on the fashion map this summer, emerging as one of the standout institutions at Graduate Fashion Week (GFW) 2026

With a remarkable haul of award wins, industry competition victories and finalist placements, this year marks the university’s most successful performance in the event’s history – an achievement that signals both creative excellence and a powerful connection to the evolving demands of the fashion industry.

Graduate Fashion Week, held annually in London, is widely regarded as a launchpad for the next generation of fashion talent. Bringing together students, industry leaders and global brands, it offers a rare opportunity for emerging designers and marketers to showcase their work on a national – and often international – stage. For the University of Lancashire’s final-year students, this year’s event proved to be nothing short of transformative.

Among the headline successes was Abbie Jarvis, who was awarded the prestigious GFW Zandra Rhodes Fashion Printed Textile Award, recognising exceptional innovation in print design. Drawing inspiration from the eclectic tastes of her family and upbringing,

Abbie’s collection offered a deeply personal yet strikingly contemporary perspective on textile design.

Reflecting on her win, she said: “My project was inspired by the eclectic and eccentric tastes of my family and home. I feel this collection really speaks to who I am as a person and designer, so to win an award for

this is a massive confidence boost and feels very special.”

Competing alongside some of the UK’s most established fashion schools, Abbie’s success highlights the growing reputation of Lancashire’s creative programmes.

Sustainability – a defining issue in modern fashion – was also front and centre.

Liliana Rochado was named winner of the GFW Hilary Alexander Sustainable Trailblazer Award, celebrating forwardthinking approaches to environmentally conscious design. Her work demonstrated not only creativity but a commitment to addressing fashion’s environmental impact, a theme increasingly valued across the global industry.

AS PART OF MY PRIZE, I’M RECEIVING ONE-TO-ONE CAREER MENTORING TO HELP DEVELOP MY PROJECT INTO A BUSINESS PLAN AND HOPEFULLY SET UP MY OWN BRAND

Another standout performance came from Amy Brown, who achieved a rare double victory in industry-led competitions, winning both the Maxxam Textiles x GFW and Liberty x GFW briefs. Amy’s work impressed judges with its ability to balance

commercial awareness with bold artistic vision. Her Maxxam project, The Swim Club: Volume 1, drew on vintage swimwear and sportswear influences, while her Liberty submission was inspired by the surreal, dreamlike worlds of Salvador Dalí.

Amy’s success didn’t end there – her menswear collection was also selected as Best in Show for the final Gala Catwalk, a coveted accolade that placed her firmly in the spotlight as one of the UK’s most promising emerging designers.

Innovation in sustainability and business thinking was further demonstrated by Naomi Robinson, who won the Zalando x GFW Circularity Competition. Turning her attention to the bridalwear sector, Naomi developed a concept centred on rental models and adjustable-fit garments, designed to significantly reduce waste in an industry often associated with single-use fashion.

“It feels fantastic to win and have four years of hard work recognised,” Naomi said. “As part of my prize, I’m receiving one-to-one career mentoring to help develop my project

into a business plan and hopefully set up my own brand.” Her work exemplifies the next generation of designers – those who are as commercially minded as they are creatively driven.

But it wasn’t just design students who excelled. The University of Lancashire’s strength in fashion communication and marketing was equally evident. Niamh Frith was crowned winner of the GFW Fashion Marketing Award, recognising her innovative and strategic thinking.

THIS YEAR’S SUCCESS DEMONSTRATES THE INNOVATION AND DEDICATION OF OUR STUDENTS

Her project, Selfridges Re-Claimed, imagined a six-month immersive jewellery pop-up centred on pre-loved, reworked and bespoke pieces, complete with a trade-in system for metals. Combining sustainability with experiential retail, the concept tapped into key market trends and demonstrated a level of industry readiness that impressed judges.

“Winning the award was a genuine pinchme moment,” Niamh said. “The feedback I received has really boosted my confidence and confirmed that I can deliver in this industry.” Her work also drew praise from judge Josef Barrowclift of Purple Mountain Observatory, who described the concept as “genuinely ready for market” – high praise from an industry professional.

Behind these individual successes lies a broader story of academic excellence and

industry alignment. Course leader Eve Astle highlighted how the university’s fashion promotion and marketing programmes are designed with employability in mind: “Our course is aligned closely with industry, ensuring students graduate with both creative flair and the commercial awareness employers are looking for.”

Similarly, fashion design senior lecturer Christopher Creighton-Molloy emphasised the importance of keeping pace with a rapidly evolving sector: “We work hard to keep the curriculum current, reflecting the fast-paced changes within the fashion industry. This year’s success demonstrates the innovation and dedication of our students.”

Taken together, the University of Lancashire’s achievements at Graduate Fashion Week 2026 represent more than a collection of awards – they reflect a thriving creative community, a forwardthinking approach to education and a new generation of talent ready to shape the future of fashion.

For Lancashire, it’s a moment of pride. For the students, it’s just the beginning. n

When William Doherty arrived at Stonyhurst earlier this year, he found himself captivated not only by the beauty and history of the school but, more importantly, by the people who bring it to life: “It is a stunning environment in which to work, but my strongest first impressions were of the people,” he says. “It’s easy to get absorbed in the history and the grandeur of the place but for me it is the people and in particular the pupils, who make Stonyhurst so special. They are happy, joyful, courteous and polite.”

As the new Head of Stonyhurst, William joins one of the most historic educational institutions in the world. Founded in 1593, Stonyhurst is the oldest continuously operating Jesuit school globally and occupies a spectacular 1,000-acre estate in the Ribble Valley. Yet despite its rich heritage, William believes its enduring success lies in its ability to remain relevant.

GLOBAL VISION

Drawing on decades of leadership in Jesuit schools around the world, Stonyhurst’s new Head, William Doherty, is guiding pupils to thrive through reflection, service and a sense of purpose

Born and educated in Brisbane, Australia, William spent his final two years at school as a boarder before beginning his teaching career at St Ignatius’ College Riverview, a leading Jesuit day and boarding school in Sydney. More than three decades later, following senior leadership roles across Australia and Singapore, he has brought his extensive experience of Jesuit education to Lancashire.

For William, the philosophy underpinning a Jesuit education has never been more important: “I think a Jesuit education is more relevant than ever in the 21st century,” he explains. “A Jesuit education is not one

dimensional – too often schools are focused on academic achievement, but a Jesuit education focuses on the whole person.

“It is about putting fundamental traits such as morality, spirituality, wellbeing, decision-making, reflection and service at the core of the entire person. In Jesuit schools you see the person, not the product.”

A JESUIT EDUCATION ENCOURAGES DISCERNMENT AND

GRATITUDE: RECOGNISING WHAT BRINGS YOU JOY, AND LEARNING TO APPRECIATE IT

That commitment to educating the whole person is central to Stonyhurst’s mission. Alongside academic excellence, the school places equal emphasis on character formation, leadership, service and wellbeing, guided by the Jesuit principle of cura personalis – care for the whole person.

William believes that one of the most valuable qualities schools can nurture today is the ability to reflect.

“I think we have lost the power of reflection,” he says. “We are preparing young people to take action and make decisions, but what matters most is the ethics that guide their choices. We encourage pupils to pause, reflect and consider the impact of their decisions before they act.”

It is an approach that prepares young people not only for examinations and university but also for the complexities of modern life.

“We live in a global, complex world and we are aware of the challenges of our time,” William says. “We want to give our pupils the confidence to go into different frontiers. They need to engage with others both virtually and physically. We give pupils many and varied opportunities, so they experience a lot about the world around them. We think it is important to produce citizens that impact the world.”

That blend of tradition and innovation remains a defining characteristic of Stonyhurst. While the school proudly celebrates more than four centuries of history, William is equally focused on ensuring pupils are equipped for the future.

“Stonyhurst has more than 430 years of tradition and innovation, and it is important that a school with such a rich history continues to look forward as well as draw on the wisdom of the past,” he says. “The Jesuit philosophy is: don’t get so attached to the past that you can’t detach and look ahead.”

For pupils, this includes embracing emerging technologies thoughtfully and responsibly.

“AI has come along so let’s embrace the best of it in an ethical and discerning way. It’s a fine balance.”

Recent recognition from the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) reinforces the strength of Stonyhurst’s approach. The school met all Independent School Standards and was awarded the rare distinction of a Significant Strength for its Co-curricular provision.

“Again, this is about educating the whole person,” William explains. “Pupils grow and develop because of the

Co-curricular Programme – it makes an impact on their formation.”

The inspection also highlighted the school’s welcoming community, strong pastoral care, commitment to wellbeing and the respect pupils show towards different cultures and perspectives.

OUR AIM IS TO CULTIVATE OUTSTANDING TEAM PLAYERS WHO HAVE A GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE

William sees the combination of day and boarding pupils as another of Stonyhurst’s great strengths: “We have a fantastic blend of boarding and day pupils,” he says. “From a boarding point of view, we recognise that it often represents a great sacrifice on behalf of parents as it is all about letting go –preparing your children to fly from the nest with confidence.”

Looking ahead, William’s ambitions are clear: “Our aim is to cultivate outstanding team players who have a global perspective. Academic formation is important along with the development of good intellectual habits by way of clear thinking and knowing when to act.

“A Jesuit education encourages discernment and gratitude: recognising what brings you joy, and learning to appreciate it,” adds William. With his wife, Terina, William is equally enthusiastic about their new home in the Lancashire countryside: “I love it here in the Ribble Valley – it is so beautiful!”

It is a fitting sentiment for a Head whose vision combines appreciation for tradition with a determination to prepare young people for a changing world. At Stonyhurst, he believes education is about much more than academic success. It is about helping every pupil discover their purpose, develop their character and make a positive difference wherever life takes them. n

The power of a 3-18 education on one special campus

Imagine a School where your child’s journey is seamless, supported and full of opportunity from their very first day to their final exam.

At Westholme, a 3–18 education offers children the unique advantage of growing within one connected School, from Pre-Prep through to the INSPIRED Sixth Form. Every stage of your child’s journey is carefully designed to build confidence, character and academic success, whilst ensuring each child feels valued.

We believe children flourish when they feel secure. At Westholme the ability to remain within one School setting provides consistency in values, routines, expectations and pastoral

care, helping pupils move confidently between key stages without the disruption of changing schools.

The transition from Pre-Prep to Prep, Prep to Seniors and Seniors to Sixth Form is not a leap into the unknown, but the next natural step in a familiar and nurturing journey.

Westholme’s 21st Century Essential Skills Curriculum ensures that learning builds naturally year after year. In Prep, independence is encouraged from an early stage, confidence is

developed and nutured through performance, sport, leadership and creative opportunities, and by Year 6, pupils take centre stage in their own School production in the professional 550 seat Croston Theatre.

As pupils progress through Seniors and into Sixth Form, they continue to develop the vital life skills and selfawareness needed to thrive in tomorrow’s world.

Westholme students leave at 18 with world-wide opportunities at their feet.

In an increasingly global environment, young people need more than qualifications alone.

“They need communication, collaboration, creativity, critical thinking and the confidence to adapt to a dynamic, international future. That is what Westholme provides”.

The 3–18 setting creates a genuine family atmosphere pupils feel part of something bigger. Older students are encouraged to support younger pupils at every stage, whether through coaching sports teams, tutoring in Maths, reading with Prep pupils or acting as role models across School life.

Most recently, our Prep buddy system was celebrated during Mental Health Awareness Week, highlighting the important relationships built between older and younger children.

Principal, Mr Paul Taylor, said: “From their very first School day to their final exam, pupils are part of one nurturing community. A 3–18 education allows us to know every child as an individual, supporting their academic progress, personal development and wellbeing at every stage.”

One shared educational environment also means Westholme’s youngest pupils benefit from specialist facilities, expert teaching and broader opportunities giving them experiences that are typically reserved for older pupils.

From the moment children join Westholme in Pre-Prep, they have access to the 20-metre swimming pool for weekly lessons, the professional Croston Theatre for performances and showcases and expansive sports facilities supported by expert coaches and teachers.

Prep pupils also benefit from their own dedicated woodland, music facilities and specialised music teachers providing opportunities to take part in the Prep Orchestra. Year 6 pupils regularly visit the Seniors building, helping them feel confident, familiar and prepared for the next stage of their educational journey when they reach Year 7.

With entry points throughout the 3–18 journey, many pupils join Westholme at the stage that is right for them, whether in Pre-Prep, Prep, Senior School or Sixth Form. Each year, the Year 7 cohort is welcomed from more than 30 different primary schools across Lancashire and beyond, bringing together pupils from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences who quickly feel part of the Westholme community.

Pastoral care sits at the heart of Westholme. Our teachers know each child and work closely with families to ensure pupils are emotionally supported as well as academically challenged. Through our Wellbeing Strategy 2030, pupils are encouraged to understand themselves, build resilience,

develop healthy relationships and grow into confident, compassionate young people.

For parents, a 3–18 education also brings reassurance. One School, one ethos and one clear set of values: Work Hard and Be Kind. It means consistency, continuity and confidence that your child is part of a community that understands who they are and who they can become.

As one Westholme parent shared: “As a Westholme parent, I feel reassured that my child’s transition through each stage of School will be a smooth and positive experience. I am confident that by the time they leave at 18, they will have the skills, confidence and character needed for their next step. Westholme focuses not only on academic success, but on who each child is as an individual.”

Visit Westholme and discover the power of a 3–18 education.

BUSINESS OWNERS AT PENSION RISK

The experts at Raymond James, Ribble Valley take a look at pensions and how business owners could improve their future financial security

In a shocking report on 19 May 2026 the Pensions Commission reported that just four per cent (one in 25) of wholly self-employed workers are saving for retirement.

An estimated 15 million Britons are currently under-saving for their retirement, with business owners identified as an at-risk group.

For many entrepreneurs, the default retirement plan is simple – build the business, sell it and use the proceeds to fund later life.

But that approach carries significant risk. Business valuations can fluctuate, markets change and exit timing is not always within your control. Without a complementary strategy in place, there is a danger of reaching retirement without the level of financial security expected.

For business owners, pensions offer a combination of benefits that are difficult to replicate elsewhere:

1. Tax-efficient profit extraction

Pension contributions made through a limited company can be treated as an allowable business expense, helping to reduce corporation tax while moving funds into a personal environment.

WITHOUT A STRATEGY IN PLACE, THERE IS A DANGER OF REACHING RETIREMENT WITHOUT THE LEVEL OF FINANCIAL SECURITY EXPECTED

2. Tax-free growth

Investments within a pension grow largely free from income tax and capital gains tax –allowing long-term compounding to work far more efficiently.

3. Long-term retirement planning and flexibility

Unlike relying solely on a future business sale, pensions provide a separate and secure

pool of assets, reducing dependence on a single exit event. Current pension rules allow for flexible access to the fund from retirement age.

4. Unused pension allowances

One of the most effective – and often underused – opportunities available to owner-managed businesses is the ability to carry forward unused pension allowances. Each tax year, individuals can contribute up to £60,000 into a pension (2026/27).

However, what many business owners don’t realise is that unused allowances from the previous three tax years can also be carried forward.

A business owner with sufficient profits and available cash could contribute to a pension up to £240,000 in one tax year, combining the current allowance with carried forward allowances. For husband-and-wife businesses this can effectively double, allowing nearly £500,000 to be moved into pensions in a highly tax-efficient manner. While allowances and rules can change over time and professional tax advice should always be taken, the fundamental advantages of pensions remain firmly in place. The key point is timing.

The team at Raymond James, Ribble Valley has extensive experience working with business owners and their accountants to ensure that planning for exit and retirement is woven into the everyday thinking of entrepreneurs. This ensures that when the time comes to step away from the business, there is clarity and confidence around how retirement will be funded.

If you are considering whether you have planned your retirement properly and don’t want to be one of the Pensions Commission’s 15 million, please don’t hesitate to book a free initial consultation with the Longridgebased team.

A warm and professional welcome awaits. n

With a business firmly rooted in heritage yet firmly focused on the future, we sit down with Booths’ Chief Brand Officer Emma Booth to explore leadership, legacy and the evolving face of one of the north’s most loved family grocers

Can you tell us about your career journey and what brought you into the family business?

I began my career outside the family business, working across logistics, marketing and retail which gave me a strong grounding in operations, customer experience and the commercial side of the industry. Growing up around Booths, I understood its values, but it wasn’t until I’d built that external experience that I felt I could bring something meaningful back. Joining the business felt like a natural next step, combining what I’d learned with a genuine connection to the brand – it’s about not just continuing what’s been built, but helping to evolve it for the future.

Who have been your biggest influences?

My dad. Watching him lead with integrity, humility and respect for colleagues and customers has completely shaped how I approach leadership. Beyond that, I’ve learned a great deal from people across the business – our colleagues and suppliers all bring such valuable perspectives.

What does your role involve day to day?

As Chief Brand Officer, I spend a lot of time in stores, focusing on product displays, signage and the overall customer experience. I also work closely with teams on campaigns, launches and how we communicate the Booths story. What excites me most is shaping how people experience the brand day to day, from the presentation details to the feeling customers have when they walk through the door.

How would you describe your leadership style?

It’s values-led and people-focused. Creating an environment where colleagues feel trusted and supported is essential, because everything starts with our people. Earlier in my career, I was more hands-on, but over time I’ve learned the importance of stepping back and empowering others.

Booths is known for its culture – how do you nurture that?

Our people are at the heart of everything we do. As a business and brand, Booths is built on respect, trust and a strong sense of community and it’s important we hold onto that as we evolve. Our strapline, ‘The Family Grocers’, reflects not just family ownership, but the wider family of colleagues. Staying close to our teams, listening and ensuring people feel valued is key.

How do you balance heritage with progress? It starts with respecting our regional roots –relationships with local suppliers and commitment to quality are fundamental. At the same time, we have to keep moving forward, which means evolving in a way that stays true to those foundations – whether that’s modernising how we communicate or introducing new products which meet changing customer needs.

THE BOOTHS BRAND REDESIGN IS A STANDOUT MOMENT

What are you most proud of?

The Booths brand redesign is a standout moment. It’s been an opportunity to bring together our heritage and quality in a way which feels fresh and contemporary. It hasn’t been about changing who we are, but expressing it more clearly and consistently across everything, from in-store experience to packaging and communications. What makes Booths unique?

It’s the combination of quality, provenance and a genuinely personal approach. We focus on exceptional food and drink, champion local suppliers and create an offer that feels distinctive. Alongside that is our ‘warm northern welcome’ – that friendliness and

authenticity customers feel as soon as they walk in is what sets us apart.

What challenges have you faced?

Balancing the expectations of a family business whilst carving out my own path has been key. It’s been about respecting the past whilst bringing my own perspective. Navigating change is another – whether evolving the brand or introducing new ideas, the key is bringing people with you.

How are changing customer habits influencing strategy?

There’s a growing focus on health and wellbeing, with customers seeking fresh, natural products. We’ve leaned into our strengths in fresh food and curated ranges to make healthier choices more accessible. The key is evolving with customers whilst keeping quality and trust at the centre of everything we do.

What does sustainability mean to you?

It’s about making responsible, long-term choices which benefit customers, communities and the environment without compromising on quality. One initiative I’m particularly passionate about is increasing loose fruit and veg, reducing plastic and giving customers more flexibility. Small changes can make a big difference at scale. What excites you about the future?

Building on a strong foundation whilst continuing to shape the brand is incredibly exciting. There’s real momentum, from the brand redesign to improving the customer experience in-store and online. It’s driven by the passion of our teams and that combination of great people and clear direction makes the future very positive.

Where are the biggest opportunities for growth?

There’s real potential to take the Booths brand beyond our stores, particularly through growing our business-to-business offer. We’re also focused on enhancing our online experience, making it easier for customers to shop with us whichever way they choose.

What advice would you give your younger self?

Trust your instincts sooner and don’t feel the need to have everything mapped out – that clarity comes with experience. I like the idea that your hero is yourself in 10 years’ time –you’re always working towards that version. Stay curious, back yourself and don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. n

personal, responsive approach to financing.”

Kingsley Asset Finance was originally founded in 1995 by father and son team Fred and Jonathan Smith. Jonathan, who now serves as Chairman, has been pivotal to

WE ARE A FAMILY-OWNED FINANCE PROVIDER WHO AIM TO SUPPORT BUSINESSES AND THEIR OWNERS WITH STRAIGHTFORWARD, RELATIONSHIP-BASED FUNDING SOLUTIONS

Kingsley’s growth since the business was formed: “Jonathan has run the business since its inception,” explains Ben. “He has worked across every area of the company as it has grown and developed, with particular expertise in building strong

customer and intermediary relationships. He is well known in the finance sector and importantly, well liked!”

Originally a chartered accountant, Ben joined the family business in May after a 20-year career in finance working largely in Manchester and London, with more than half of that time spent as a lender: “The last five years of my career were spent advising

high-profile businesses on their financing, but I felt a strong pull to Kingsley which has grown significantly over recent years,” he says. “Three years ago, I moved back to the Ribble Valley and have now joined Kingsley alongside my brother to help lead the next stage of its evolution. For us, this is a real statement of intent – a commitment to our heritage and to remaining an independent business during the next phase of our development, without answering to outside investors. That independence allows us to take a long-term, sustainable approach to supporting the region’s businesses and entrepreneurs as we move forward.”

Kingsley prides itself on being commercial, pragmatic and highly accessible to its customers and valued intermediary partners – aiming to provide swift decisions while retaining the flexibility that comes from genuinely understanding businesses and their ambitions: “We get to know our clients from the moment they apply to us

for financial support. We make sure we really understand their needs and aspirations –being straightforward, transparent and relationship-focused is what we pride ourselves on. We know we live in economically challenging times and we understand business owners need answers quickly. By truly understanding our market, we can be flexible in our thinking and say ‘yes’ where others may say ‘no’,” explains Ben. Customers can be assured they are in safe hands with Kingsley, which has an experienced and highly skilled team that takes a genuine interest in every case. The team’s expertise and specialist risk knowledge give the company a distinct, competitive edge and make them a first port of call for their clients and local professional partners alike.

Kingsley Asset Finance supports businesses across a broad range of sectors including transport, manufacturing and engineering but is also passionate about its work within the agricultural community:

BY TRULY UNDERSTANDING OUR CUSTOMERS, WE ARE ABLE TO BE FLEXIBLE IN OUR THINKING AND SAY ‘YES’ WHERE OTHERS MAY SAY ‘NO’

“Farming is deeply embedded in our family’s own background and we have developed innovative funding solutions specifically designed to support farmers and rural enterprises – an area we believe remains

vital to the long-term prosperity of the area,” Ben says.

Credit experts at Kingsley have experience underwriting livestock funding, as well as providing financing solutions for a wide range of agricultural equipment.

Jonathan adds: “For more than 30 years, our positive approach and open-minded attitude have helped support hundreds of local businesses – regardless of whether they are a new enterprise or well-established. It’s great to now have Ben on board and we look forward to the future, with renewed ambition and continued growth.” n

DRIVEN BY DESIGN

Packed with creativity and character, the MINI Paul Smith Edition is unlike anything else on the road. Photography: Peter Austin

In a world where many vehicles seem increasingly similar, the MINI Paul Smith Edition is a refreshing reminder that cars can still have personality.

This latest collaboration brings together two great British icons. On one side, MINI – a brand that has spent more than six decades proving that small cars can deliver huge character. On the other, Sir Paul Smith –one of Britain’s most celebrated designers, renowned for his distinctive use of colour, playful details and creative approach to design.

The result is a MINI that feels unlike anything else on the road.

Of course, the Paul Smith Edition remains unmistakably MINI. The iconic proportions are all there, along with the trademark gokart handling and modern technology that have helped the latest generation become the most advanced MINI ever built.

But this special edition adds an extra layer of creativity.

Available in a choice of Inspired White, Statement Grey or Midnight Black II, each

colour has been carefully selected to reflect Paul Smith’s unique design philosophy. Sophisticated at first glance, yet full of character when you take a closer look.

The exterior styling features exclusive accents, unique detailing and the option of a contrasting Nottingham Green roof or a striking interpretation of Paul Smith’s famous signature stripes.

EXCLUSIVE UPHOLSTERY, DISTINCTIVE MATERIAL COMBINATIONS AND UNIQUE COLOUR TREATMENTS INSTANTLY SETS IT APART FROM A STANDARD MINI

As with many of the designer’s creations, the real magic lies in the details.

Look carefully and you’ll discover thoughtful touches that reveal themselves over time, rewarding those who appreciate craftsmanship and individuality.

Open the door and the story continues.

The cabin has been transformed through exclusive upholstery, distinctive material combinations and unique colour treatments that instantly sets it apart from a standard MINI.

The dashboard features its own special finish, while signature stripes and bespoke detailing appear throughout the interior. Even the steering wheel receives its own colourful stitching treatment, adding another layer of personality to every journey.

And while the design naturally takes centre stage, the MINI Paul Smith Edition is much more than a fashion statement.

The latest MINI family continues to showcase some of the most advanced technology the brand has ever offered.

At the heart of the cabin sits the stunning circular digital display, a feature that remains completely unique within the automotive world. Acting as both instrument display and infotainment hub, it controls everything from navigation and media to vehicle settings and personalisation features.

The system is beautifully intuitive and can be customised to suit individual preferences, creating an experience that feels as personal as the car itself.

The MINI Experience Modes allow drivers to tailor the atmosphere within the cabin, adjusting displays, lighting and sounds to create different moods depending on the journey ahead.

Whether you’re navigating city streets, heading out on a weekend adventure or simply tackling the daily commute, there is a setting to match the occasion.

The Paul Smith Edition is available across a number of MINI models, giving customers the freedom to choose the MINI that best suits their lifestyle.

The All-Electric MINI Cooper takes MINI’s electric future and adds a colourful dose. Whilst the MINI Cooper Petrol offers the classic three-door experience that has made MINI a household name around the world.

THE MINI PAUL SMITH EDITIONS ARE NOT ABOUT BLENDING IN. THEY’RE ABOUT CELEBRATING INDIVIDUALITY, CREATIVITY AND OPTIMISM

For those requiring a little extra space, the MINI Cooper 5-Door adds practicality without losing any of the charm. And for drivers who believe every journey is better with the roof down, the MINI Cooper Convertible delivers open-air motoring with an added touch of British creativity.

Whichever model you choose, the message remains the same. This is a car designed for people who enjoy doing things differently.

The MINI Paul Smith Editions are not about blending in. They’re about celebrating individuality, creativity and optimism. It proves that a practical everyday car can still be exciting, expressive and full of character.

In many ways, it perfectly captures everything both brands represent – and perhaps most importantly, a reminder that driving should always be fun. n

DREAM COME TRUE

Giving you endless possibilities and choice, a consultation in the Porsche ‘Specification Lounge’ might just blow your mind, writes Paul Agnew. Photography: Peter Austin

Sonderwunsch. Comprehend?

No Googling please, but if you’re slightly confused or not fluent in German, no worries – an explanation will come to those who wait a paragraph or two.

First and foremost, this feature is about explaining why owning a new Porsche is not only special (we all probably know that anyway) but something that can be special beyond our wildest expectations.

Porsche offers those who wish to hook up to one of the world’s most iconic motoring brands, an amazing opportunity to drive around in a vehicle that reflects their personal tastes.

PORSCHE HAS FINE-TUNED A CAR CONFIGURATION JOURNEY WHICH DEMONSTRATES HOW CUSTOMERS CAN CREATE A CAR AROUND THEIR LIFESTYLE AND INDIVIDUALITY

And this, dear car enthusiast, means ‘personalisation’ on a level never seen before.

At this juncture, perhaps I should translate – sonderwunsch translates to ‘special wish’.

Essentially the chance to turn your dream

Porsche into a car based entirely around your individual wishes.

From exterior paint colour, interior finishes, state-of-the-art graphics, wheels and fabrics, right through to the look and feel or your matching key fob.

The possibilities and choices are as amazing and as they are endless.

If you want to see (and feel) just what is possible then book yourself in for a consultation in the ‘Specification Lounge’ at Porsche Preston.

But, be warned, it might just blow your mind.

Porsche has fine-tuned a car configuration journey which demonstrates precisely how

customers can create a car around their preferences, lifestyle and individuality. The only proviso is that you must first choose a model from the Porsche range. But when the options are a 911, Taycan, Macan, Panamera or Cayenne, then that shouldn’t present too much of a problem!

So, selection made, what next?

First up, exterior colours. There is a range of standard, metallic and specials, often referencing historic Porsche models and including the iconic Guards Red, Gentian Blue, Chalk and Carmine Red.

Paint to Sample (PTS) gives customers access to a huge catalogue of colours with the appeal of owning a Porsche that is less likely to be replicated by another customer. PTS+ means you can submit any colour for

assessment – something inspired by a family heirloom, a piece of jewellery or company branding for example.

THE POSSIBILITIES AND CHOICES ARE AS AMAZING AND AS

THEY ARE ENDLESS

For wheels and exterior styling, you can again choose from multiple designs, contrasting colours and various finishes. Interiors can be tailored using leather, Club Leather, Race-Tex and premium material combinations and you can have single-colour or two-tone interiors. Contrast stitching can be specified throughout the cabin to complement

exterior paintwork or interior trim, seat belts are available in multiple colours, the Porsche crests embossed into headrests, illuminated door sill guards, keys painted to match the exterior colour or key pouches finished in matching leather.

But don’t be overwhelmed, you don’t have to make wholesale changes – a few tweaks here and there are absolutely fine. You are very much in the driving seat, controlling both the cherrypicker and the cost.

Time spent in the Specification Lounge is both eye-opening and jaw-dropping (maybe not a good look on most folk) and ultimately a unique chance to create your dream car.

You can explore all the options available using the Porsche Configurator with the in-centre team on hand to help you navigate thousands of possible combinations.

Sonderwunsch is Porsche’s highest level of customisation whereby customers work directly with Porsche specialists to create one-off vehicles. Every request is individually assessed by Porsche with all Sonderwunsch vehicles becoming unique creations.

It is the pinnacle of Porsche ownership and individuality.

For any motorist with an eye for style, a craving for sport and an appreciation of excellence, a Porsche has always been about as good as it gets.

Until now.

Sonderwunsch takes things a lap further – an opportunity to own a Porsche designed and built to your specific brief – when all your ‘special wishes’ really can come true. n

SMART FAMILY MOTORING

A few days with the Chery TIGGO 8 Super Hybrid Summit proves family cars can still deliver space, tech and value without the high cost, writes Tedd Walmsley. Photography: Peter Austin

I’ve spent the last few days driving the new Chery TIGGO 8 Summit and, if I’m honest, it wasn’t a vehicle I knew a great deal about before collecting the keys.

That changed rather quickly.

Many of my readers know Bowker Motor Group through its long association with Porsche, BMW and MINI. Over the years, the group has built a reputation for representing quality brands and delivering excellent customer service. Their decision to bring Chery to Lancashire therefore caught my attention.

After a few days behind the wheel, I can see exactly why they’ve taken on the franchise.

The TIGGO 8 Summit is a large seven-seat plug-in hybrid SUV that makes a strong first impression. It has real road presence without looking oversized. The styling is smart and contemporary, with clean lines, distinctive lighting and enough detail to make it stand out in a crowded market.

What surprised me most was what I found once inside.

The cabin feels far more premium than the price point might suggest. The materials are impressive, the seats are comfortable and the overall design has a quality feel throughout. Everything is logically positioned and easy to use. There is no sense of clutter or unnecessary complication.

The large digital displays are crisp and responsive, while the infotainment system quickly becomes second nature. Smartphone connectivity is seamless and there is plenty of technology on board,

but it never feels overwhelming.

Of course, family SUVs have to perform in the real world, not just in a showroom. Over the course of my test drive, I spent time with my grandchildren and that provided the perfect opportunity to see how the TIGGO 8 works as a genuine family vehicle.

IT HAS REAL ROAD PRESENCE WITHOUT LOOKING OVERSIZED

Getting children in and out was straightforward thanks to the generous door openings and higher seating position. There was plenty of room in the rear seats and, importantly, plenty of room for all the things that seem to accompany children wherever they go.

Bags, coats, drinks, toys and the inevitable collection of items that appear during a family day out were swallowed up with ease.

The seven-seat layout adds another layer of versatility. Whether it’s transporting grandchildren, friends, visiting relatives or simply needing extra space for a weekend away, the TIGGO 8 adapts without fuss. It feels like a vehicle that understands family life.

On the road, the TIGGO 8 Summit is equally impressive.

The plug-in hybrid powertrain delivers the best of both worlds, with the Chery Super Hybrid System delivering a combined range of over 745 miles. Around town there is the smoothness and quietness associated with electric driving (up to 56 miles), while longer journeys benefit from the reassurance of a petrol engine when required.

IT DELIVERS SPACE, COMFORT, TECHNOLOGY, FLEXIBILITY AND EFFICIENCY IN A PACKAGE THAT FEELS EXCEPTIONALLY WELL ROUNDED

For many buyers, that combination makes a great deal of sense. The transition between power sources is smooth and unobtrusive. The result is a driving experience that feels refined and relaxed. Road noise is well controlled and motorway journeys are particularly comfortable.

I genuinely enjoyed driving it.

This is not a car that constantly reminds you how clever it is. Instead, it quietly gets on with the job. After a few hours behind the wheel, you begin to appreciate how easy it is to live with.

Safety is another area where the TIGGO 8 scores highly.

Families place safety at the top of their priorities and rightly so. Chery has equipped the Summit with an impressive array of driver assistance and safety systems that provide reassurance for both driver and passengers. Many of these features would once have been associated with far more expensive vehicles.

Then there is the question that many buyers are asking more than ever before. Value. This is where the TIGGO 8 Summit becomes particularly compelling.

The specification is extensive. The level of equipment included as standard is impressive and there is very little sense that you need to start adding expensive options to achieve the vehicle you really want.

When you compare the equipment, space, technology and overall quality with some of the more established competitors, the TIGGO 8 begins to make a very strong case for itself.

The warranty package only strengthens that position further covering 7 Years/ 100,000 miles. Long-term peace of mind remains important for family buyers and Chery’s generous warranty coverage demonstrates real confidence in the product.

By the end of my time with the TIGGO 8 Summit, I found myself reflecting on just how much vehicle is being offered for the money. It delivers space, comfort, technology, flexibility and efficiency in a package that feels exceptionally well rounded.

More importantly, it feels honest.

Bowker’s decision to introduce Chery to Lancashire is a smart move. The brand brings something fresh to the market while offering the qualities most family

buyers are looking for.

After several enjoyable days behind the wheel, I came away impressed.

If you’re searching for a family SUV that combines practicality, technology, safety and value, the Chery TIGGO 8 Summit deserves a place on your shortlist.

My advice is simple. Visit Bowker Preston Chery, take one for a test drive, explore the offers and see whether it surprises you as much as it surprised me. n

KITCHEN IN THE WITH…

Food is never just food. It’s the memories, passion and stories behind the plate. In this series, we sit down with some of the region’s most inspiring chefs – here we talk to Matthew Lowry, Senior Sous Chef at Ribby Hall’s The Orangery

Located within The Spa Hotel at Ribby Hall Village in Wrea Green, The Orangery is an award-winning two AA Rosette fine-dining restaurant, offering a luxurious dining experience with beautiful garden views.

Matthew has been part of The Spa Hotel since the very beginning, joining when the hotel first opened 15 years ago. As Senior Sous Chef, Matthew not only supports the day to day running of the kitchen but is also passionate about mentoring younger team members.

THE JOURNEY

What first drew you into the world of food and how did you know it was going to be more than just a job for you?

Hospitality has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. I spent my childhood learning alongside my grandparents in the kitchen while watching my mum run our family hotel. Seeing the passion, commitment and care that went into every aspect of the business ignited a love of food and hospitality that has stayed with me ever since.

My professional culinary journey began in Perth, Western Australia, where I moved on a student visa to pursue a career in hospitality. I studied at the School of Hotel and Tourism Management, completing Certificates II and III in Kitchen Operations while gaining invaluable experience in some of the city’s leading kitchens.

My first role was at Oceanus on the Beach, Perth’s renowned seafood restaurant, where I discovered the pace, discipline and excitement of professional cooking. From there, I progressed into five-star hospitality with the Sheraton brand, working in both Perth and Brisbane. These formative years exposed me to exceptional standards, refined

techniques and a culture of continuous learning that continues to influence my approach today.

INSPIRATIONS & INFLUENCES

Who or what has been your greatest culinary inspiration, either inside or outside the kitchen?

I was inspired by the energy and enthusiasm of Jamie Oliver. His passion for food made the profession feel exciting and accessible, watching him race around on his scooter, slide down banisters and cook with such enthusiasm. He was one of the first chefs who made me think that a career in the kitchen could be something truly special.

I was equally captivated by Boiling Point, the documentary series that followed Gordon Ramsay as he opened his first restaurant. It was a fascinating and eye-opening look behind the scenes of professional kitchens and the pressures of building a successful restaurant.

SIGNATURE DISH

If you had to choose one dish which truly represents you as a chef, what would it be and why?

I like to think that we are constantly evolving as a restaurant, which makes choosing a signature dish difficult. However, my current favourite on the menu is Crispy Cornish Egg with Wye Valley asparagus, Iberico ham and sauce gribiche. Alongside cooking, I have a particular passion for bread making, especially sourdough. There is something deeply satisfying about the process – from nurturing the starter to pulling a perfectly baked loaf from the oven. Our sourdough focaccia served with chimichurri dressing and whipped feta has become one of my favourite dishes on the menu and a standout part of our bread course.

CULINARY HEROES

Which chef (past or present) would you most love to cook alongside and what would you make together?

I have been fortunate enough to meet both of my culinary heroes: Marcus Wareing and Marco Pierre White.

A few years ago, my wife surprised me with a visit to The Berkeley in Knightsbridge for lunch at Marcus Wareing’s restaurant. What I expected to be a memorable meal became an unforgettable experience when Marcus invited me into the kitchen to meet him and his team. We spent time discussing my career, my ambitions and my aspirations for the future. Despite his remarkable achievements, he was incredibly generous with his time and advice. It remains one of the most inspiring moments of my career.

I later met Marco Pierre White alongside Pierre Koffmann at a supplier festival. Both were exactly as I had hoped – passionate, engaging and true legends of the industry. I was particularly excited to meet Marco, having followed his career for many years. His television series documenting life at Harvey’s had a profound impact on me as a young chef, offering a rare insight into the intensity and dedication required to reach the top of the profession.

KITCHEN WISDOM

What’s one piece of advice you wish someone had given you when you first started cooking professionally?

Great cooking begins with great ingredients, never stop learning, never stop tasting.

Good food creates memories. People may not remember every detail of a meal, but they’ll remember how it made them feel. Listen to those around you, learn from every kitchen you’ve worked in and never be afraid to ask questions.

Anyone can cook a great dish once. The challenge is delivering that same standard every day, for every guest.

Growing up in a family hotel taught me that great hospitality is about making people feel welcome, whether you’re greeting a guest, cooking breakfast, or serving a tasting menu.

GUILTY PLEASURE

When you’re off duty, what’s the dish, snack or drink you secretly love – no matter how simple?

Without a doubt, it has to be cottage pie. It was my favourite meal growing up and remains one of my all-time comfort foods. While I’ve made a few tweaks to my grandma’s recipe over the years, the core ingredients and flavours remain exactly as I remember them. Sometimes the simplest dishes are the most satisfying.

On my days off, you’ll usually find me relaxing in the garden in the evening, weather permitting, with an ice-cold beer and salted nuts. n

RIVERSIDE CAFE

ONE STOP MULTI CUISINE

Craving Pizza one minute and Jerk Chicken the next? Now you can have both. It’s a bold, fresh approach to dining built for people who don’t want to compromise.

The Boathouse by the Ribble is a welcome new addition to Preston’s riverside food and drink scene. Located in Alpha Cottage on Riverside, close to Avenham and Miller Parks and just a short stroll from The Continental, this family-run café offers stunning views of the River Ribble. The venue has quickly become popular with walkers, cyclists and local residents. Serving quality coffee, food and drinks, The Boathouse aims to be a community hub where people can meet, unwind and refresh.

During this time, coffee was seen to be fashionable amongst the upper classes and carrying an air of the exotic. Coffee has long held a place in daily ritual, providing a vehicle for discussion of the politics, art and great debates of the day. So maybe some things do stay the same!

COFFEE CULTURE

Coffee arrived in the UK around the 17th century, but much has changed in Preston since Mrs Jameson served the people of Preston from her coffee house in the Church Street area in 1685, writes Ben Hall. Photography: Anthony P Driver

The growth of independent cafés has reshaped coffee culture. Today’s consumers increasingly seek locally roasted beans, artisan brewing methods and unique café experiences –echoing the role that Preston’s early coffee houses played more than 300 years ago as centres of conversation, community and commerce.

BRUCCIANI’S CAFÉ

91c Fishergate

Brucciani’s brings the depth of history. Serving Preston since 1932, this Fishergate institution has the confidence of a place that knows exactly what it is. JONAH’S COFFEE

8 Hope Street

Jonah’s Coffee is tucked away on Hope Street away from the high street by the University and is small, smart and full of momentum. The sort of spot that understands the modern coffee drinker. Someone who may want a carefully made drink and plenty of choice. The setting gives it a relaxed, independent feel and makes it part of the community.

Around two-thirds of coffee shops are made up of the big four market leaders, leaving around 5,000 independent coffee shops supplying our considerable intake. Preston is no exception, and while you can visit the city and see all the major players and their familiarity, we have sought out some of the spots that might give you the comfort to try something new. n

breakfast, lunch and conversation.

Brucciani’s is slightly more food-led than some of the city’s newer coffee counters, but that is precisely its strength. The 1930s styling gives it warmth without feeling like a museum piece, and its longevity adds an extra flavour to the cup. In a culture often obsessed with what is new, Brucciani’s reminds us that some rituals endure because they still work beautifully.

Here there is choice without fuss, where Espresso-based classics sit alongside the less offered batch filter and V60 options, so it works whether you are after a familiar latte, or something a little more exploratory. Jonah’s is a lively coffee stop rather than somewhere to lose an afternoon. For students on the way to campus, office workers cutting through the centre, or anyone who likes their coffee with a little craft behind it, it offers a bright, reliable start.

LIV CAFFE The Exchange, Pole Street

Liv Caffe brings a sleek, contemporary feel to Preston’s coffee scene. Its stylish interior, attentive service and well-crafted drinks make it a welcoming city-centre retreat. It offers homemade food and an entirely halal menu, appealing to a wider range of customers.

HOLY GROUNDS

13 Ribblesdale Place

Not every good coffee stop needs armchairs, houseplants and a carefully curated playlist. Holy Grounds, near the entrance to Avenham Park, proves the appeal of keeping things simple. Its walk-up counter suits the location next to the park.

And then there are the doughnuts. Freshly made by hand they are definitely not for the

LIFE LATELY 8a Winckley Street

Life Lately is the newest name on this list, but it already sounds like exactly the kind of addition Preston’s coffee scene can make room for. A modern, Scandi-styled interior gives it the feel of a café designed as a social space, for quiet breaks, informal offices and weekend destinations all at once.

A social but quiet working environment, Liv seems built for that middle ground. Students can settle in without feeling they are occupying a restaurant table, while professionals can stop for a coffee that feels more considered than a grab-and-go chain. In a city with a large student population and a busy office core, that kind of flexible space matters.

faint hearted. Make sure the walk is included to fully indulge in one of these sweet treats. And don’t forget about your four-legged friends when visiting, there are treats for them too should you “paws” for a doggy doughnut. Holy Grounds does not need to over-explain itself. It fits neatly into the life around it. For walkers, park-goers and anyone who prefers their coffee with fresh air nearby, it is a small but memorable stop.

Offering new coffees from boutique roasteries each week gives Life Lately a sense of discovery. For anyone curious about tasting beyond the usual house blend, it offers a gentle education: different origins, roast styles and brewing approaches without the need for jargon or intimidation. It is a café for people who already love coffee.

SUMMER TASTE SENSATION

Summer brings fresh flavours, alfresco dining and exciting celebrations to the Rum Fox, where Bob, Kiaja and their talented team continue to flourish

There is something particularly special about the Rum Fox during the summer months. Set in the heart of Grindleton, this muchloved Ribble Valley destination combines the warmth of a traditional village pub with the creativity and attention to detail of a truly memorable restaurant. For those who already know and love it, the warmer season offers plenty of reasons to return.

Chef patron Bob Geldeard and his partner Kiaja Monk continue to lead an exceptional team, all of whom work tirelessly to create the ultimate dining experience. From the welcome at the door to the final flourish on the plate, there is a sense that everyone is genuinely invested in making each visit feel special.

That team spirit is at the heart of the Rum Fox and the recent promotions of Olivia and Oliver to supervisor roles are a perfect example of how talent is encouraged to grow. Both have worked exceptionally hard, demonstrating dedication, professionalism and a genuine passion for hospitality

throughout their time at the restaurant.

They are known for going above and beyond for guests and colleagues alike and their commitment has certainly not gone unnoticed. Their promotions are

thoroughly deserved, marking an exciting next step in their careers. As supervisors, Olivia and Oliver will continue to be fantastic leaders and role models within the team.

It is clear just how proud Bob, Kiaja and their colleagues are of these talented young people. The Rum Fox family is built around mutual support, shared ambition and a desire to deliver the very best. With Olivia and Oliver stepping confidently into their new roles, there is plenty to look forward to.

IT IS ANOTHER IMPRESSIVE ACHIEVEMENT FOR THE RESTAURANT AND A REFLECTION OF THE CREATIVITY, CONSISTENCY AND HARD WORK

The good news does not stop there. Following an already award-winning year, the Rum Fox has been named as a finalist in the Great British Pub Awards, with the winners due to be announced in September. It is another impressive achievement for the Grindleton restaurant and a reflection of the creativity, consistency and hard work taking place behind the scenes.

Guests can also look forward to an exciting collaboration event with the Unruly Pig in

October. Further information will be revealed in the coming months, so keeping an eye on the Rum Fox’s social media channels is highly recommended. Given the reputation of both restaurants, it promises to be a very special occasion.

Before autumn arrives, however, there is a whole summer of relaxed dining to enjoy. The retractable roof allows guests to make the most of sunny days and lighter evenings, creating an inviting alfresco experience without having to rely entirely on the unpredictable Lancashire weather. It is the perfect setting for a leisurely lunch, dinner with friends or a celebratory glass as the evening draws in.

Seasonality has always played an important role at the Rum Fox and the introduction of its own allotment brings a new dimension to the kitchen’s approach. Produce is now being grown on site, allowing Bob and his team to create homegrown specials using ingredients that have travelled only a matter of metres.

There is something wonderfully satisfying

about enjoying a dish prepared with produce grown just outside the kitchen. It brings freshness, flavour and an even stronger connection to the surrounding countryside. The allotment will continue to develop throughout the seasons, inspiring specials according to what is ready to harvest.

THERE IS SOMETHING WONDERFULLY SATISFYING ABOUT ENJOYING A DISH PREPARED WITH PRODUCE GROWN JUST OUTSIDE THE KITCHEN

Across the à la carte menu, set menus and daily specials, dishes are constantly evolving to reflect the changing time of year. This freedom allows Bob and his kitchen team to be creative, introducing new combinations while making the most of ingredients at their very best. Regular visitors can always expect something different alongside the

familiar quality and character that have made the Rum Fox such a favourite.

Sunday lunch remains another excellent reason to visit. It is everything a great Sunday meal should be, generous, comforting and beautifully prepared, with the added polish guests have come to expect. Whether it follows a country walk or forms the main event of a relaxed weekend, it is a Ribble Valley ritual worth booking ahead for.

The Rum Fox is also an ideal venue for celebrations of every size. Intimate private dining can be arranged for smaller gatherings while restaurant takeovers offer an impressive setting for more sizeable occasions. Bespoke menus can be created to suit each event, giving birthdays, anniversaries and family celebrations a personal touch.

With a flourishing team, national recognition, homegrown produce and exciting collaborations ahead, the Rum Fox is enjoying a remarkable year. Yet its appeal remains reassuringly simple. It is a place where good food, warm hospitality and thoughtful details come together, inviting guests to settle in, celebrate and enjoy the very best of the season. n

SMOKY, SWEET & SPICY…

Barbecue expert Doug Imber shares his recipe for Taco al Pastor with Pico de Gallo and Mexican Street Corn Elote – the ultimate backyard taco feast!

When it comes to food that brings people together, tacos sit right at the top of the list. They’re vibrant, messy, packed with flavour and built for sharing around the barbecue with friends and family. Taco Al Pastor is one of Mexico’s most iconic street foods, traditionally made with marinated pork, cooked slowly on a vertical spit until perfectly charred and caramelised.

This backyard BBQ version captures all those incredible flavours with smoky grilled pork, sweet pineapple, fresh pico de gallo salsa and buttery Mexican street corn elote on the side. It’s bold, colourful cooking that feels relaxed yet seriously impressive.

Ingredients:

1.5kg pork shoulder, thinly sliced 3 guajillo chillies, softened

1 Ancho chillie, softened 2 cloves garlic

1 tsp cumin

1 tsp smoked paprika

Juice of 2 limes

1 tbsp brown sugar

Fresh pineapple

Method:

1 tsp Mexican oregano

100ml pineapple juice

2 tbsp white vinegar

Salt and pepper

Corn tortillas

Blend the chillies, garlic, spices, pineapple juice, lime juice, vinegar and sugar into a smooth marinade. Coat the pork thoroughly and leave overnight in the fridge for maximum flavour.

Set the barbecue for medium-high direct heat using charcoal for added smokiness. Grill the pork in batches until slightly charred and caramelised around the edges. Grill the pineapple slices at the same time until golden and lightly blackened.

Roughly chop the pork and pineapple together before loading onto warm corn tortillas.

FRESH PICO DE GALLO SALSA

4 ripe tomatoes, diced 1 small red onion, finely diced 1 jalapeño, finely chopped

Juice of 1 lime

Method:

Handful fresh coriander

Sea salt

Combine all ingredients in a bowl and mix well. Allow the salsa to sit for 10 minutes before serving so the flavours can develop. The freshness of pico de gallo balances the richness of the smoky pork perfectly, adding brightness and texture to every bite.

MEXICAN STREET CORN ELOTE

4 corn cobs

Juice of 1 lime

Crumbled cotija or feta cheese

Method:

3 tbsp mayonnaise

2 garlic clove, crushed

Fresh coriander

Grill the corn directly over the flames until lightly charred on all sides.

Mix together the mayonnaise, lime juice and garlic before brushing generously over the hot corn. Finish with crumbled cheese, and chopped coriander.

BRINGING IT ALL TOGETHER

Pile the smoky Al Pastor onto warm tortillas, spoon over fresh pico de gallo and serve with wedges of lime and charred elote on the side. This is the kind of food designed for long summer evenings around the grill. Every bite delivers layers of smoke, citrus, sweetness, spice and crunch that instantly transports you straight to a busy Mexican street food stand. Simple ingredients, cooked over fire, turning into something unforgettable – that’s what great barbecue food is all about. n

FIELD TO FORK

From heritage vegetables to edible flowers and micro-greens, the organic kitchen garden at the Three Fishes supplies exceptional, flavoursome produce to the chefs who work their magic

At the Three Fishes in Mitton, the journey for the home-grown, seasonal produce is measured not in food miles but in footsteps. Just beyond the kitchens lies a flourishing one-acre organic garden where vegetables, fruit, herbs and edible flowers are carefully nurtured before making their way onto diners’ plates – within hours of being harvested.

The kitchen garden is the living embodiment of chef-patron Nigel Haworth’s celebrated field-to-fork philosophy. Every day begins with a conversation between horticulturalist Sharon Smith and Nigel to discuss what is at its seasonal peak and which crops should be picked for the lunchtime menu.

“Our seasonal menus very much depend on what we have growing in the kitchen garden,” says Nigel, who this year celebrates 50 years in the hospitality industry. “We may have sea bass with shallots, lobster with broad beans or strawberry soufflé – really fresh fruit and vegetables harvested that morning – wonderfully in-season.”

VISITORS CAN EMBARK ON A 90-MINUTE EXPLORATION OF THE GARDENS, LEARNING ABOUT ORGANIC CULTIVATION, HERITAGE VARIETIES AND

THE PRINCIPLES BEHIND NIGEL’S FIELD-TO-FORK ETHOS

The garden’s success owes much to Sharon, a former therapeutic horticulturalist whose passion and expertise have helped transform the growing space. With Nigel, she has been instrumental in developing the garden’s no-dig approach, a technique that prioritises soil health and biodiversity.

“We keep digging to a minimum so as not to disrupt the underground network that has all the nutrients,” explains Sharon. “If too much digging happens it destroys the network and it takes a long time to reinstate.”

The results speak for themselves. The carefully managed beds produce an extraordinary volume of crops, many of them unusual heritage varieties chosen specifically for their flavour. Last year delivered a bumper harvest of heritage tomatoes, while this season the gardens and polytunnel are bursting with hispi cabbages, broad beans, peas, rainbow carrots, chard, spinach and black cherry tomatoes. More unusual varieties include

Blauwchokker purple peas, scarlet kale and sweet white albino beetroot, prized because it does not ‘bleed’ colour onto the plate.

Inside the polytunnel, a treasure trove of specialist crops continues the theme of culinary discovery. Shiso, a fragrant herb with minty-citrus notes, grows alongside striped Tigerella tomatoes and classic Italian San Marzano varieties. Nasturtiums provide peppery edible flowers that brighten dishes while also serving another purpose, as Sharon explains: “Nasturtium attract caterpillars which are drawn away from damaging the other crops.”

As a purely organic garden, no pesticides or chemical deterrents are used. Instead, nature is encouraged to find its own balance and certain varieties of fruit and vegetables are selected specifically because pests naturally avoid them.

The scale of planning behind the garden is impressively meticulous. Sharon and Nigel spend winter months deciding exactly what will be grown, where it will be planted and how it will support menus throughout the year.

“Nigel and I will sit down in winter and thrash out what seeds we grow the following year and in which beds,” says Sharon. “We do a lot of research, as what we grow dictates the menu.”

Outside, numerous planting beds stretching 20 feet long provide growing space for an ever-changing range of produce, including a recently created plot dedicated to Purple Rain and Heidi Red potatoes. Meanwhile, the work never stops. Winter crops are already being started in the polytunnel months ahead of the colder season.

LONG TERM PLANNING IS ESSENTIAL, IT’S NOT EASY BUT IT’S INCREDIBLY REWARDING. THE FLAVOURS YOU GET – YOU JUST CAN’T GET THEM ANY OTHER WAY

“We use succession planting to ensure we have all-year-round fruit and vegetables to match the seasons,” Sharon explains. “Nigel changes the menu monthly, so we have to have specific crops for a full month. We have to sow every three weeks to ensure a constant supply. It’s a lot of planting!”

Around 80 per cent of the garden is dedicated to fruit and vegetables, while the remaining 20 per cent produces cress, shoots and herbs that provide the finishing flourish on every plate.

For Sharon, whose lifelong hobby has always involved growing her own produce,

the role is a dream come true: “I love my job!” she says enthusiastically. “Personally, I have always had an allotment – it’s been a lifelong hobby and to turn your hobby into your work is just wonderful.”

Her enthusiasm is shared by visitors. Guided garden tours launched in June have quickly become hugely popular. Guests begin with coffee before embarking on a 90-minute exploration of the gardens, learning about organic cultivation, heritage varieties and the principles behind Nigel’s field-to-fork ethos. A glass of fizz in the polytunnel and a seed-sowing workshop are followed by lunch at the Three Fishes, creating a memorable and educational experience.

For Nigel, the garden represents something far greater than simply growing ingredients. It is a commitment to seasonality, sustainability and flavour that shapes every menu throughout the year.

He says: “Long term planning is essential it’s not easy but it’s incredibly rewarding. The flavours you get – you just can’t get them any other way.” n

ARTISAN SUPERSTARS

A small community of artisan makers are regularly gathering to showcase what they do in the heart of the rural Ribble Valley.

Photography: Anthony P Driver

Tucked away in the rolling countryside of Goosnargh lies one of the Ribble Valley’s best kept secrets – a quietly flourishing hub of artisan talent centred around Mrs Kirkham’s Farm Shop. What began as a practical response to challenging times has evolved into a vibrant destination,

bringing together some of the region’s most exciting independent producers.

The story starts back in 2020, when the impact of lockdown hit the hospitality industry hard. Like many food producers, the Kirkham family faced sudden disruption to their business. Rather than stand still, they adapted – transforming a former packing room into the charming farm shop visitors enjoy today. That spirit of resilience still defines the place.

THIS IS A SMALL ARTISAN COMMUNITY BUILT ON PASSION, QUALITY AND COLLABORATION

At its heart is the renowned cheese counter, brimming with Mrs Kirkham’s award-winning Lancashire cheeses, alongside a carefully curated selection of guest cheeses, meat, yoghurt, freshlybaked sourdough, pate and pies, all from fellow artisan makers. It’s a celebration of craftsmanship, tradition and quality,

drawing food lovers from far and wide.

More recently in the courtyard outside the farm shop, under the vision of Graham Kirkham, is a growing collective of artisan makers. His ambition is simple yet powerful –to nurture small, independent businesses by offering them an affordable space to trade. With plans to build additional stable-style units, the site is gradually expanding in an organic and thoughtful way.

“These people are the best of the best –the superstars of the artisan world,” he says confidently.

One of the standout additions is Fellside Coffee, offering a warm and welcoming spot nestled by the farm shop, created by Rick Swarbrick. Rick uses locally sourced, premium, freshly roasted coffee from Longridge-based Field & Fire.

Here, expertly brewed speciality coffee is paired with award-winning bakes. But it’s not just coffee – and it’s not just cake. At Fellside Coffee, they serve up proper treats, properly made and outrageously good bakes from award-winning baker Martin Frickel, crowned Britain’s Best Baker for his now-famous sticky toffee blondie. There’s also delicious vegan and gluten-free options, so there’s something for everyone.

With outdoor seating, all-weather cover and views stretching toward Beacon Fell, it’s an idyllic countryside retreat.

Across the courtyard is Bloom & Folk, known for their delightful wild posies and seasonal bouquets, mossy wreaths and softly glowing candles, gifts and decor for the home and garden, each piece chosen to reflect the surroundings, crafted from

natural materials and proudly championing British growers and makers.

Visitors will also find Rosie Goat serving up indulgent and delicious artisan ice cream made with milk from a local herd of goats. Served in the scoop shack, the ice-cream is naturally low in lactose.

THESE PEOPLE ARE THE BEST OF THE BEST

Wander further across the courtyard and you’ll find Paul and Charlotte at Wyresdale Dexters which produces the finest, homereared, grass-fed beef while the Seafood Shack nearby provides the freshest coastal catch every Friday.

Pete’s Pantry, nestling amidst the artisan stables, also has a presence offering a fabulous

array of homemade preserves, chutneys, sauces, curds, oils and chilli products, all made with natural and locally sourced ingredients.

Pete’s Pantry is a Longridgebased small artisan hobby-turned business and was borne out of a passion for cooking and home grown produce.

By creating a space where artisans can thrive without the burden of high street rents, Graham and the team are cultivating something rare – a small artisan community built on quality and collaboration.

What was once a simple farm shop is fast becoming a destination in its own right – proof that even in the most tucked-away corners, something truly special can grow. n

LOCAL ARTIST TAKES JAMES

CLASSIC WORLDWIDE

A Chorley-born singer is finding international success after reimagining one of Manchester’s most iconic songs

Tom Wills, who grew up in Chorley and attended Southlands High School before moving to Manchester to pursue his music career, has been picking up radio support across the globe with his synth-infused dance-pop reimagining of James’ classic hit ‘Laid’.

For Tom, the song’s story started long before he recorded it.

“I first heard Laid as a kid on one of those free CD samplers that came with a Sunday newspaper,” he said. “It had Laid and Sit Down on it and I played them constantly. Then years later I saw James live at Lytham Festival with my dad and brother and completely reconnected with the song.”

Listening back as an adult gave the track a whole new meaning.

THE LYRICS TALK ABOUT BREAKING RULES AND CHALLENGING EXPECTATIONS

“I realised how ahead of its time it was. The lyrics talk about breaking rules and challenging expectations. It felt surprisingly relevant in 2026, so I wanted to introduce the song to a new generation.”

With that vision in mind, Tom approached Preston-based producer Sholz-Y with the idea of giving the track a completely fresh

identity. While Tom reimagined the song through his vocal performance and overall creative direction, Sholz-Y crafted the synth-infused dance-pop production, creating a modern take that stayed true to the emotion of the original.

IT’S AMAZING TO THINK THAT A SONG I FIRST DISCOVERED AS A KID IN CHORLEY IS NOW CONNECTING ME WITH LISTENERS ALL OVER THE WORLD

The release has since picked up radio support across the globe, with the track finding audiences in countries including Germany, France, Sweden, Italy, Greece, South Africa and Australia, as well as charting at #47 on the UK iTunes Dance Chart.

It’s the latest chapter in a growing career. Tom’s previous release, Mid-Night Moves, reached #4 on the UK iTunes Dance Chart, with both records helping establish him as one of the North West’s emerging dancepop artists.

Signed to Swedish label The Dance Division, with global distribution through Sony, Tom has continued building his audience through social media and live performances while connecting with fans through music, Manchester culture, Pride events and everyday life.

Recent appearances include Pride in Trafford and Salford Pride’s Pink Picnic Festival, with further live dates planned throughout the year, including performances in Ibiza.

For Tom, the success of Laid is proof that Lancashire talent can travel far.

“It’s amazing to think that a song I first discovered as a kid in Chorley is now connecting me with listeners all over the world. That’s something I never take for granted.” n

Tom’s next single, I Got the Walk, is due for release later this year. Laid is available now on all major streaming platforms.

Adam likes to think he is doing his grandfather, Robert Worthington, proud. “He was my biggest inspiration as he always believed in me,” he adds. “He always believed that one day my gift would be shared with the world.”

YOU NEVER STOP LEARNING AS AN ARTIST. EVERY PIECE TEACHES YOU SOMETHING NEW

PAINTING WITH PURPOSE

Blackpool artist Adam Salisbury has transformed a lifelong love of art into a powerful career rooted in storytelling, community and creativity, writes Ali Gudgeon

“I’ve loved art for as long as I can remember,” Adam reflects.

“Throughout school and college, I was always drawing, sketching and creating.” His natural talent didn’t go unnoticed. While studying at Blackpool and The Fylde College, tutors often used his work as examples for other students. “That gave me a huge boost in confidence and made me realise I had something worth pursuing.”

But like many young artists, Adam’s path wasn’t linear. After leaving college, life intervened. Responsibilities took over, and for around five years, his artistic practice faded into the background. “Art became something I used to do rather than something I was actively pursuing,” he admits. Everything changed in 2015 with what seemed like a simple project – painting a mural in his eldest son’s bedroom. “The moment I picked up a paintbrush again, something clicked. I remembered how much I loved it; how much I’d missed it.” That one mural proved to be a turning point, igniting a creative resurgence that would shape his career.

From that bedroom wall, opportunities began to flow – commissions, large-scale murals, tattooing, community projects and more. “Looking back, it’s amazing to think such a small project set me back on the path I was always meant to follow,” he says.

While Adam has a foundation in formal training, much of his growth has been self-driven. “A huge amount of what I do has come from experimentation and practice. You never stop learning as an artist. Every piece teaches you something new.” This constant evolution has helped him develop a distinctive style shaped by persistence and a willingness to push creative boundaries. Being from the Fylde Coast has also played a significant role in shaping his work. “Blackpool has influenced a lot of what I create,” he explains. “I’ve worked on projects that celebrate local landmarks, organisations and community spaces.” For Adam, the most rewarding aspect is seeing how people connect with his art. “There’s something special about creating work that resonates with your own community.”

One of his most meaningful collaborations began through a chance moment on social media. After posting a Disney-themed bedroom mural online, a nurse from Blackpool Victoria Hospital reached out.

That initial connection led to Adam’s first hospital commission - and the start of an ongoing relationship.

“Five years on, I’ve painted more than 30 walls across different departments,” he says. These include the Macmillan Cancer Centre, Haematology and children’s wards. “These are spaces where people are facing incredibly difficult situations. Being able to create something that brings colour, positivity and comfort is one of the most rewarding things I’ve done.”

Adam’s artwork has now reached hundreds of millions of people online via social media, which Adam cites as being a big part of his journey in helping his work reach an international audience.

At the heart of Adam’s work is storytelling. Whether he’s working on a mural, portrait or tattoo, every piece begins with meaning. “I always start by researching and understanding the story behind what I’m creating,” he explains. “From there, I sketch ideas and think about how I want people to feel when they see the finished piece.”

His creative process is fluid, often evolving as he works. Some pieces take dozens of hours to complete, each layer building depth

and emotion. “My aim is always to create something that connects with people, not just something that looks good.”

Inspiration comes from many places, but Adam points first to life experiences. “Stories of resilience, family and community drive me more than anything.” Music also fuels his creativity, while artists such as Leonardo da Vinci inspire his approach.

“I’m fascinated by the ideas behind finished work – the sketches, the thought process. That’s where creativity really begins.”

THE HOSPITAL MURALS ARE STILL MY PROUDEST ACHIEVEMENTS. THEY’VE HAD A REAL IMPACT ON PEOPLE’S LIVES

His career has already seen remarkable milestones. A tribute painting of Captain Sir Tom Moore went viral globally and featured on Pride of Britain. His work has caught the attention of celebrities too – Eminem, Logan Paul and Will Smith among them. “Those moments are surreal,” he admits.

Yet despite these high-profile acknowledgements, Adam remains

grounded. “The hospital murals are still my proudest achievements. They’ve had a real impact on people’s lives.”

Another standout collaboration has been his work with Theo, a young man with Down syndrome. “We’ve created content together that promotes kindness, inclusion and positivity,” Adam says. “That’s something I’m incredibly proud of. Our videos together have reached millions of people, with one of them hitting 1.7m views and helped spread awareness.”

Looking ahead, Adam shows no signs of slowing down. He’s currently working on several large-scale projects, including celebrity portraits featuring Chris Gayle and potentially Jake Paul. At the same time, he continues to explore new opportunities within hospitals and the local community.

“My goal is to keep growing, reaching more people internationally and creating work that inspires,” he says. “I want to combine art and storytelling in a way that spreads positivity.” n

THE WOMEN REWRITING THE SCRIPT

Female-led, award-winning and bold, Swipe Right Theatre Company has carved out a distinctive space in the UK theatre scene with its witty, high-energy productions and commitment to championing women’s voices

Founded in 2015 by friends Tashi Granger and Kerrie Thomason, the company has gone from pub-corner rehearsals to Arts Council-backed development – and they’re just getting started. Catching up with the pair, it’s clear that their love of theatre began long before Swipe Right was even an idea. For Kerrie, it all started with a family introduction to the stage. “My mum has always been a huge fan of theatre and took me to see shows from a young age,” she recalls. “I remember the first time I saw Cats – an actor crawled into the audience and rubbed his head on my arm and I thought, ‘That’s it! That’s what I want to be.’ Initially, I wanted to be a cat, but then realised acting might be more realistic.”

Tashi’s beginnings were equally steeped in performance, thanks to her parents running a venue in Brighton. “We had theatre companies from all over the world,” she says. “I loved anything interactive, where the audience could be part of it. My sister and I would create our own versions at home, with homemade props and demos on our Casio keyboard for the soundtrack.”

WE’VE

ALWAYS WANTED TO WRITE SHOWS THAT EMPOWER WOMEN AND TELL THEIR STORIESBUT ALSO LET THEM BE REALLY SILLY

While Kerrie says theatre was always her “number one choice,” Tashi’s decision crystallised when she attended the BRIT School at 16. “Studying theatre every day with like-minded people made it clear – this is what I wanted to do.”

Their paths eventually led them both to Blackpool and The Fylde College, a place they credit with shaping their creative voices.

“I’ll always have a soft spot for Blackpool,” Kerrie says. “They nurtured our individuality –it never felt like we were being moulded.” Tashi agrees, adding that the course’s range prepared them for the realities of the industry. It was during this time – and their later collaborations – that their creative partnership began to flourish. “We realised we had a similar work ethic and made each other laugh a lot,” Tashi explains. That balance still defines their working dynamic today. “I’m exceptional at making a to-do list,” she jokes. “And I’m exceptional at ticking it off,” Kerrie adds. Swipe Right itself was born out of friendship, wine and a mutual love of music.

“In 2014 we went to the Edinburgh Fringe together,” Kerrie says. “We saw a 60s jukebox

musical and thought – why not do this for 90s kids?” The result was their debut show 2 Become 1, a nostalgic, comedic musical set at a 90s speed dating night.

As for the company name?

“Embarrassingly, it’s from Tinder,” Kerrie admits. “We wanted audiences to ‘swipe right’ on us.” “I was actually dating my now husband at the time,” Tashi adds. “I hope he doesn’t read this.”

Starting out wasn’t easy. “Financially, it was tricky,” Tashi says. “We rehearsed in the corner of a pub, pulled in favours, crowdfunded – we didn’t pay ourselves for a long time.” Despite the challenges, they remained committed, working around fulltime hospitality jobs to build their company from the ground up.

THEATRE CAN BRING ESCAPISM, CONNECTION – IT CAN OPEN YOUR WORLD RIGHT UP

Central to Swipe Right’s identity is a clear artistic mission. “We’ve always wanted to write shows that empower women and tell their stories – but also let them be really silly,” Kerrie explains. “There are too many shows where women are the side piece. We wanted to create powerful, ridiculous female characters who get to have fun.”

That ethos continues to evolve as their writing grows more ambitious. “Our first show was just about making something fun,” Tashi says. “Now we’re more confident exploring deeper themes and more complex characters.”

Their latest project, Rochester Knockers, marks a bold step forward. “It’s a deliciously dark new musical about three psychic sisters in the 1800s,” Tashi teases. Supported by Arts Council funding, the show is set to premiere in 2027 and has already enjoyed a successful work-in-progress run. “The response has been fantastic – we’re really proud of how far we’ve come.”

Collaboration has played a key role in that growth, including a recent partnership with composer Matthew Floyd Jones. “We’ve been fans of his for years,” Kerrie says. “To work with him was a dream.”

Beyond their productions, Swipe Right is equally passionate about community engagement. One of their most rewarding experiences came through storytelling workshops at London’s Crossroads Women’s Centre. “The confidence that grew in the participants was incredible,” Kerrie says.

“They went from not knowing what to say to performing their own work – stand-up, plays, book readings.”

For both, local theatre plays a vital role. “It’s where I found my confidence growing

up,” Kerrie reflects.

“And it’s so important for access,” Tashi adds. “Theatre can bring escapism, connection – it can open your world right up.”

Looking ahead, the duo have big ambitions. “We’d love to move into larger-scale productions and touring,” Tashi says. “Just reaching more people with our work.” And for aspiring theatre-makers? Their advice is refreshingly honest: “Find someone you trust,” Tashi says.

“And just start writing,” Kerrie adds. “Even if it’s nonsense – get something on paper. We started by making each other laugh.”

With their blend of humour, heart and fearless storytelling, Swipe Right Theatre Company is proving that bold, female-led theatre isn’t just needed – it’s unstoppable. n

GOOD READ

SUNSHINE, STORIES & SWITCHING OFF

Lazy afternoons, warm evenings and the perfect excuse to slow down. Summer reading has its own rhythm. It’s the paperback tucked into a beach bag, the novel balanced beside a sun lounger and the quiet hour in the garden when the world finally pauses. Whether you’re escaping to the coast, staying close to home or simply making the most of longer evenings, the right book can turn a moment into a memory.

Here are three current reads for him, her and the kids. Perfect companions for summer days and slower living.

FOR HIM: THE TRADING GAME

Gary Stevenson

Sharp, intelligent and impossible to put down. Former City trader Gary Stevenson’s memoir has become one of the year’s most talked-about books. From his East London upbringing to becoming one of the most successful financial traders in the world, Stevenson offers a fascinating insight into ambition, money and modern Britain. What makes this book stand out is its honesty. Beneath the high-stakes trading floors and extraordinary success lies a thoughtful reflection on pressure, inequality and what really matters. It reads like a thriller but carries real emotional depth. Read it with: A strong coffee by the pool or a quiet morning before the house wakes up.

FOR HER: ONE DAY

David Nicholls

Tender, witty and wonderfully immersive. Following the huge resurgence of popularity after the recent Netflix adaptation, One Day has found a whole new audience this summer – and for good reason. David Nicholls tells the story of Emma and Dexter, revisiting them on the same day each year as life, love and friendship evolve around them.

There’s warmth and heartbreak woven into every chapter, alongside sharp observations about growing older and finding your place in the world. It’s deeply human writing that feels perfect for quiet afternoons with nowhere to be.

Read it with: A chilled glass of rosé in the garden while the evening sun lingers.

FOR THE KIDS: IMPOSSIBLE CREATURES

Katherine Rundell

Magical, adventurous and utterly transporting. Katherine Rundell’s latest bestseller is already being hailed as a future classic. Blending mythology, fantasy and fast-paced storytelling, Impossible Creatures follows two children on a thrilling journey through a hidden world filled with dragons, sphinxes and ancient secrets. Rundell writes with extraordinary imagination and energy, creating a story that feels tailor-made for summer adventures and bedtime reading alike. It’s the kind of book children disappear into completely –and adults may quietly borrow afterwards. Read it with: Bare feet on the grass and the sound of sprinklers in the background.

Summer books are different from winter reads. They invite us to drift a little, breathe more deeply and savour time rather than rush through it. Whether you’re poolside abroad, tucked away or simply stealing a peaceful hour at home, these stories offer the perfect seasonal escape. Because sometimes the best journeys begin with turning the first page.
