Graffiti artist Shawn Sharpe has created some iconic art in Preston city centre including his now famous murals ‘Mother’ and ‘Rose in the Yellow Dress’.

Alma Stewart chats to Shawn about his work, his latest mural and future plans

T

here can’t be many Prestonians who haven’t seen the stunning mural ‘Mother’ on the side of Howgarths on Church Street. Featuring a young woman holding the lamb of St Wilfred, Preston’s patron saint, it took Shawn five days, battling all types of weather and a maze of scaffolding to complete his first public artwork.

The reaction to the mural, which sits next to Preston Minster, was an explosion of positivity. Featuring the ‘PP’ Prince of Peace crest, often referred to as meaning Proud Preston, the mural evoked such a sense of pride that Shawn was inundated with positive messages, public comments and media attention. He said: “I didn’t expect the response it got. The owners of Howgarths, Amber Taverns, gave me a free rein to create anything.

I wanted it to be Preston related but nothing that would jar against the beautiful church.

It seemed fitting to include the Lamb of God and I wanted to create Preston’s crest as a focal point but in a creative way. Mother is a strong woman who guards the lamb and the city. I wanted to create a piece for the people of Preston, something that they can all take ownership of and feel proud of when talking about our city, Proud Preston.”

The dad of two from Brookfield, didn’t envisage a career as an artist: “Art wasn’t my favourite subject at school. I preferred sport,” he said. Shawn expected to follow in his dad’s footsteps by joining the RAF: “I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do so I enrolled at Preston College at the Park School to study a foundation degree in art,” he added.

Shawn’s friends got him interested in graffiti. Shawn was taken under the wing of some of the artists and after three years of creating on disused walls and buildings, Shawn got really hooked, creating his Reasm tag. Shawn studied a degree in Illustration at Preston’s University of Central Lancashire but was still unclear on his career: “I painted kids’ bedrooms and washed pots in pubs all over Preston. Eventually, I became a graphic designer but then one offer of work came in which changed everything.”

Shawn was approached by the owners of Valiants Barn in Out Rawcliffe. He was commissioned to paint the barn however he chose and took two weeks to complete it. At one time, music festivals were held on this site and Shawn learned more techniques ‘on the job’ as he created his art to match this event space. This led to commissioned work from the Corona beer company and Revolution bars commissioning Shawn to paint inside their venues across the UK. But it is Preston where Shawn’s heart lies. He has created a number of murals around the city centre which includes art on Cannon Street, in the Detroit bar, and at Slingers Ironmongers.

I’M TRYING TO BRING A GALLERY OF ART TO THE STREETS OF PRESTON, SUPPORTING MORE LOCAL ARTISTS Only a couple of months ago, Shawn created his take on Preston’s Harris Museum’s most famous painting, Pauline in the Yellow Dress by Sir James Gunn, this time renaming Pauline as ‘Rose’. This was commissioned by Amber Taverns on the side of The Northern Way on Friargate. Shawn said: “After the massive reaction to Mother, I asked the locals in a Preston Past and Present Facebook group what they would like to see in the mural that was quintessentially Preston. Based on their 271 comments, I encompassed the Invincibles (the Preston North End team in the 1800s, completing the season unbeaten in both the league and the FA Cup, therefore becoming the first team ever to achieve the ‘Double’); the Preston Guild (a celebration held every 20 years that began in 1179) and Halewood & Sons bookshop which has traded in Friargate since 1867.”

Again, Shawn also encompassed the lamb sitting on Rose’s knee in the 12 metre mural instead of the white dog in the original painting. Shawn creates the images with his iPad then scales it up to the size of the wall in grids. “My ability to draw portraits is all self-taught,” said Shawn, “I’ve just improved each time I have created one.”

His most recent work for Amber Taverns is on the side of the Wheatsheaf pub, not far from Preston Docks. This time Shawn has nodded to Preston’s history of the cotton mills.

‘Betsy Leigh’ the mill worker was created to show both sides of this industry and features Ashton’s Tulketh Mill. Shawn said: “I wanted to celebrate our textile industry, I have my own story for this piece and what it means but I want the public to create their own stories. Mine shows the light and dark side of the industry. I’m sure many people have parents and grandparents that worked in the mills, it’s been 50 years since they shut.

In another 50 years, we won’t have anyone around to tell of their experience of working in them so keeping the history alive is important. Thanks to SWAT Access for helping me with the equipment to complete the job. I couldn’t have done it without them.”

With all of his recent exposure, Shawn hopes to create more of an art’s scene in the city. He explained: “Preston has undergone some recent regeneration and it’s a good opportunity to create more culture in the city. So many students come to study art here but take their talents elsewhere. There has been peak and troughs with the arts scene in the city but with the closure of the skate shop Scene, a hub for many creatives, many left to create in Manchester. But it would only take a few people to bring back the art culture to Preston. I’m trying to bring a gallery of art to the streets of Preston, supporting more local artists. It has the

potential to bring artists from all over the UK and set Preston as a cultural centre.”

Shawn has recently worked with primary school children in an art workshop. And would love to extend this to community-based projects: “It’s a way of getting younger people and those of the edges of society to come together and create something. I’d love to be able to create jobs around these types of projects,” he added.

I WANTED TO CELEBRATE OUR TEXTILE INDUSTRY, I HAVE MY OWN STORY FOR THIS PIECE AND WHAT IT MEANS BUT I WANT THE PUBLIC TO CREATE THEIR OWN STORIES As for future murals, Shawn is keeping tight-lipped as he is currently in negotiations with something huge somewhere in Preston.

And although he has created some fantastic work, there is one building he would love to work on: “The Unicentre on Lord’s Walk would be amazing to paint. Each side is so huge I could create all sorts!”

So watch this space for Shawn’s next big project. He didn’t want to end the interview without expressing his gratitude to all the people of Preston: “I am amazed at the support have had from businesses and Prestonians of all ages. I know of people that never venture into the city centre but have made a special trip just to see my work. I love creating Preston-related work so a massive thank you to everyone who has shown me such overwhelming support.” n

They are generally younger plants, which are grown for a few years and then lifted from the ground with the roots remaining exposed. Once planted in a new area, bare root plants will take time to grow and develop.

Bannister Hall Nurseries, based in Higher Walton Preston, specialises in the growing and sourcing of trees and hedging plants in root ball and bare root form. Unlike pot-grown trees and hedging plants, root ball and bare root plants are grown naturally in a field and

then lifted in a dormant phase at certain times of the year. This offers numerous benefits for the consumer and a highly cost-effective solution for planting a hedge or tree line, especially when covering a larger area.

The root ball and bare root season runs from October to around March the following year. During the winter months, trees and shrubs enter a dormant period, which makes it an ideal time to lift them from the ground and to move them to a new area. Lifting and transporting trees in the winter season gives the plants time to settle into their new area, after which, they are ready to wake up and sprout again in the spring.

Indeed, root ball refers to the bio-degradable hessian sack that encapsulates the ball of earth containing the root system of the plant when it has been lifted from the ground.

When transported to its new location the plant and the sack containing its roots are planted as one, directly into the ground. The process is quick and fairly straight forward, and the success rates are usually high.

There are multiple benefits to planting hedging and trees in root balls, one of which is that they are already strong, healthy and mature plants with an established root system. This gives the plant a much better chance of survival whilst creating an ‘instant hedge’ at the size and species desired. This takes away the waiting for plants to develop and ‘knit’ into the desired density you require, and you literally have a fully grown hedge within a day of taking delivery.

Natuzzi. An ever evolving story of Italian passion Natuzzi’s history is a 65-year journey that has come all the way from southern Italy. It all started in 1959 when Pasquale Natuzzi opened his first workshop in his homeland, Puglia. PERFECT SHADES… Automated shade company Lutron recently opened a new, international office in central London. Andrew Dickinson of Lutron-partner Bernard Dickinson, was among the honoured guests to be invited

utron, the global leader in lighting control and automated shades, has opened a new office for its UK, continental Europe and Africa headquarters. The company has chosen a 7,770 square foot premises at 51 Lime Street in the heart of the city of London.

After recently being awarded Platinum Dealer Status, Karen and I were invited along with a handful of Lutron businesses, to attend a cocktail party at the new office to meet Ed Blair the President of Lutron.

The space had to match the company’s technology by providing a comfortable and bright aesthetic. Lutron’s new office includes

enhanced amenities, including greenery and art installations, private phone booths, a relaxation area and the perfect lighting with Lutron’s lighting control and blind automation solutions.

FOR 30 YEARS WE, AT BERNARD DICKINSON, HAVE PARTNERED IN THE SALES AND INSTALLATION OF LUTRON On the decision to move, Ed Blair said: “Lutron’s new London office represents a significant investment in the region and

reflects the growing importance of the UK market for Lutron internationally. Following on from the UK, we’re also investing in international expands with new facilities to be open before the end of this year in India and the Middle East.”

For 30 years we, at Bernard Dickinson, have partnered in the sales and installation of Lutron. It started with a novel looking switch panel that dimmed any lights and lamps that we connected to it. It had a few

buttons and a catchy looking display. It sold well – most are still in daily use to this day.

Without realising what we had started, my business gradually began to steer a different course on another journey.

Controlling light helped to control how we felt in a living space, it made nice things look nicer.

We look at light in layers, not just hanging from the ceiling. It highlights features within a living space, making the space cosy, functional or dramatic. This worked perfectly well in the evening or at night when darkness fell.

It was always more of a challenge to do this in daylight hours. That is, unless you start to look at window treatments.

LIKE A DIMMER FOR THE SUN – WHISPER-QUIET PRIVACY, UV PROTECTION AND A CHOICE BETWEEN HUNDREDS OF PREMIUM TEXTILES Lutron’s founder, Joel Spira asked a question, ‘If we were to become the number one lighting control company in the world, how could we do that if we could not control the number one light source in the world, the sun?’

This started another journey – the automation of window dressings. Simply blinds, or shades, as Lutron call them.

It was a privilege to meet Ed and Javier at the opening. Ed told me that he started his career as an engineer in the development of the shades we use today. He was keen to

question me about our commitment and success in becoming one of the country’s top Lutron providers.

I detailed our demonstration facilities at Beech Drive which showcases several shading solutions, backed up with imagery of installations within customers’ homes, I explained our prowess in taking the project from early day desires to the finished article and all fulfilled by a highly qualified, professional installation team, in-house.

We discussed how every other manufacturer of automated blinds are blind companies who try to add technology to an existing product, whereas Lutron are a technology company who pursued perfection in automated shades. Such is their confidence,

they provide the longest warranty in the industry, for fabric and drives.

I supported the statement that there is an expectation that the blinds should go up and down together at the same time during operation, Lutron are the only manufacturer who can guarantee perfect alignment in this way for the life of the shade.

ince studying together at university, Ben and Arron remained friends and in 2022 established BCAE Architects after an influx of exciting projects into what was originally Ben Craven Architects.

Since then, the practice has gone from strength to strength with both Ben and Arron bringing complementary skillsets to the table.

Based in Euxton, near Preston, BCAE Architects specialise in bespoke, high-end residential architecture at varying scales and project costs across the North West, working with

new and existing buildings, as well as projects for innovative commercial developments.

“Our projects cover a wide range – from brand new homes to charming old ones, from giving interiors a fresh look to adding transformative extensions. ecently renovated, Burning Desires of Preston have an extensive showroom which now has more variety and a wide range of live displays over their two floors than ever before: “We’ve completely updated and re-designed our showroom,” explains owner Paddy Umpleby. “We showcase an extensive range of gas, electric and wood burner fires and fireplaces, along with providing a unique and personal service to all our customers.”

he demands we are placing on how we want our bathrooms to make us feel are growing,” says Sophie Schofield, head of design at Ribble Valley Bathrooms. “As such, they are becoming one of the most design-led rooms in our homes.

“As we head into 2024 we are going to see people becoming even more creative with the use of this space – pushing design boundaries and using the bathroom to create a wow factor in the home.”

• Prepare vegetable seed beds and sow some vegetables under cover.

Knowing which vegetables to sow where, when and how means you can maintain constant supplies throughout the season.

• Chit potato tubers. It’s important with earlies, and a good idea with maincrops, to ‘chit’ the seed potatoes before planting. This means allowing them to start sprouting shoots.

• Protect blossom on apricots, nectarines and peaches. Most top fruit and soft fruit are very hardy but once they start growing in spring, flowers and buds are especially vulnerable to frost and may need protection to crop well.

PREPARING FOR SPRING February can be one of the coldest months of the year, even though it is full of the promise of spring with bulb shoots pushing through and song birds being heard

here is still plenty to do in the garden now in preparations for the months ahead – winter maintenance continues and there is gentle pruning and cutting back of shrubs and hedges to do.

Make sure when cutting back that you don’t disturb wildlife that will still be hibernating.

If you want to know what to do with your prunings then one simple solution is to create a ‘twiggery’ – a twiggy habitat tucked away in a quiet spot at the end of the garden or allotment or under a hedge. Cut prunings into lengths of one to two metres and make

MAKE SURE WHEN CUTTING BACK THAT YOU DON’T DISTURB WILDLIFE a low pile in a shady place. Small mammals will use this and hedgehogs may even nest there. Birds that don’t mind nesting close to the ground such as blackbirds and dunnocks may also use it as a nest site.

You can also think about giving a bird a home during National Nest Box Week, which runs for a week from 14th February, by simply

putting up a bird nest box in your garden.

As our gardens and parklands become tidier, natural nest sites are rapidly disappearing.

Caring for our feathered friends by feeding, providing water and putting up nest boxes, to give them a safe space to raise chicks, has never been more important. You can find out where to put up a nest box and which kind to put up at nestboxweek.com.

Attracting insects into your garden for birds and to pollinate plants is also important.

A good pollinator plant for February flowering is Pussy Willow (Salix caprea). This native deciduous tree prefers deep soils that don’t dry out and has broader leaves than most willows.

In late winter, it produces furry catkins that not only contain nectar but also accessible pollen that turns the male catkins from silvery-grey to bright yellow and attracts big queen bumblebees and several species of solitary bees. n

This month there are signs of the approaching spring, with bulbs appearing and wildlife waking up as light levels and temperatures increase. There’s plenty to do indoors this month to prepare for the season ahead. Outdoors, as the garden comes to life again, it’s time to prune shrubs and climbers, such as Wisteria as well as evergreen hedges.

RHS The shortest month of the year, February marks the final month of the winter season and heralds the dawning of spring. It can also start to feel noticeably lighter each day which is always a boost after shorter daylight hours. This extra light makes heading for walks to spot wildlife such as beautiful waxwing birds or common spawning frogs a little easier, as nature stirs after its winter hibernation.

egistered, Chartered Clinical Psychologist, Dr Kim Whitaker, has over 24 years post qualification experience and is skilled in the assessment of children, young people and adults: “After qualifying, I worked in the NHS for 10 years in both Adult Community Mental Health and Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services,” she explains. “Since moving into private practice, the majority of my referrals come through solicitors.”

Dr Whitaker has devoted her last 15 years to completing medico-legal assessments for the civil courts and her expertise is also regularly called upon to provide opinion in Family Law matters.

Alongside this, Dr Whitaker and her team have expanded the scope of their work to provide evidence-based reports in the field of Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and related conditions such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), providing an assessment, diagnosis and recommendation service across the age range.

Dr Whitaker explains: “Advancements in neurodiversity research and psychometric measures mean we are now able to identify and diagnose earlier, to ensure that children get the right guidance to support them with their needs, helping them achieve their potential in education and beyond.”

Dr Whitaker notes: “We do not prescribe medication, rather we formulate and develop methods and strategies to support and celebrate neurodiverse children and people, and to ensure that those around them know how to work together to support them.”

Much of Dr Whitaker’s work is conducted in the Lancashire area (Preston, Burnley and the Ribble Valley) though she also holds regular clinics in Dublin, Liverpool and Manchester.

5 Sourdough bread slices Pesto (preferably homemade or raw) 2 Large plum tomatoes, sliced 1 Large mozzarella, sliced Extra virgin olive oil 6 Basil leaves, chopped Natural salt

Directions

1. Begin by preheating your oven to 200˚C. Proceed to slice your sourdough bread and arrange the slices on a baking tray.

2. Apply an even layer of pesto onto the sourdough slices. Follow by evenly arranging slices of tomato and mozzarella on each piece of bread.

3. Transfer the baking tray to the oven and bake for approximately 10-15 minutes, or until the mozzarella develops a slight golden brown hue.

4. After cooking sprinkle with basil leaves and salt on top. Finish by drizzling a bit of olive oil. Ready to savour!

As we start 2024, Preston based cardiac charity Heartbeat is calling for us all to pay attention to our heart health. February is officially Heart Awareness Month and so it is the perfect time to reflect on how your lifestyle affects your heart.

In the UK there are 7.6 million people living with heart and circulatory disease. In Preston alone there are 15,000 people living with the disease and someone dies from it every 26 hours. For this reason, the charity Heartbeat exists to offer cardiac prevention and rehabilitation exercise programmes for people in Preston and the local areas.

Every week the charity, which receives no government or NHS funding and relies on the goodwill of the public to fund its work, supports nearly 1,000 local people affected with heart, vascular and lung conditions.

Heartbeat helps them live longer and healthier lives with the people they love.

Heartbeat’s chief executive, Louise Bache, explains why February is a good time to look at your heart health: “A new year is always a time of reflection and a time to start new healthy habits. Heartbeat is Lancashire’s leading heart charity, we want people to live the healthiest lives they can and minimise the risk of poor health. Small changes to diet, exercise and lifestyle and being aware of your blood pressure can make a big difference.”

DIET

Following a healthy, balanced diet helps make sure that our bodies get all the nutrients needed and can also reduce the risk of diseases like heart disease.

Include a range of fruit and vegetables – at least five a day.

Include plenty of fibre rich foods, especially wholegrains including a range of protein sources.

Choose mainly unsaturated fats and oils and minimise foods and drinks that are high in fat, salt and sugars.

EXERCISE

Walk a little further, climb the stairs, enjoy the sunshine because aerobic exercise reduces the risk of many conditions including heart disease.

Exercise strengthens the heart helping it to pump blood more efficiently through the body, lowering blood pressure and helping to keep your arteries clear. It also improves your mental health and can reduce anxiety and depression. Getting out and about can also reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation.

If a couple is unmarried and share children, and one of the parents passes away without a will, their estate will pass to the children and the surviving partner may need to make a claim under the 1975 Act in order to receive a share of the estate.

MAKING A CLAIM UNDER THE INHERITANCE (PROVISION FOR FAMILY AND DEPENDANTS) ACT 1975

If you’ve been left out of a will completely, not been left as much as you expected, or have received nothing due to the deceased having no will, you may have grounds to make a claim for reasonable financial provision from the estate under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975 (‘the 1975 Act’).

Claims under the 1975 Act are particularly common due to the rise of second families.

When a parent has remarried without making specific provision in a will for any children from their first marriage or relationship, any

The grounds for contesting a will are broadly as follows:

Contesting a will on the grounds of mental capacity can be difficult. Medical evidence showing that the testator lacked capacity at the time they made the will is required to support the claim.

Challenging a will based on allegations of forgery often involve the instruction of a handwriting expert to determine whether the testator’s signature is genuine. You may also need evidence from other witnesses regarding the preparation and execution of the will.

While there is no time limit for challenging the validity of a will, in order to make a claim under the 1975 Act, you will need to issue your claim within six months of the date of the grant of probate. We would always advise you speak to a solicitor at the earliest opportunity in order to understand your legal position and what options are available to you. n

We look at how spaces interact with each other, the journey within the building, how the proposal will look and explore materials and design. We then present options during a face-to-face meeting, work on a near final design, meet again, then submit to planning.

DANCE, SING, SHINE! Turning his passion into a successful business, dancer Barry Kinder has created full body dance fitness classes to iconic soundtracks of stage and screen for participants to step into the spotlight.

I

t was a passion that has been at the forefront of Barry’s career for the past 20 years. Having enjoyed dancing as a youngster, Barry, originally from Warrington, started his professional dancing career after choreographer Clive from top TV show The Hitman and Her recognised Barry’s dancing talent in Mr Smith’s nightclub at the tender age of 18. Barry went on to train with Clive’s dance group for roadshows, continuing after the show was axed.

Barry said: “I had studied a degree in business and marketing but I loved dance.

After completing my degree, I decided to audition for a few colleges to see whether it was possible to train in become a professional dancer and was accepted into the iconic Phil Winstons Theatreworks in Blackpool for a three-year dance and musical theatre programme. Because I had no formal dance training, I had to catch up with all the other students at a Grade 5 level.”

Following his studies, Barry went on to audition for a number of shows and gained contracts at Disneyland Paris and on various cruise ships. In London, he joined the cast of Spirit of the Dance where he completed an intensive seven-week programme to learn

the Irish dance show. This led to working all over the world for Spirit Productions in shows such as the Spirit of Broadway and the Spirit of Christmas. After five years of performing multiple shows a week, Barry wanted to explore other opportunities and his next job was as a cruise company manager for the cruise ship, Ocean Village.

WITHIN A YEAR, BARRY WAS NOMINATED FOR A RADIO WAVE LIFESTYLE AND CULTURE AWARD WHICH HE WENT ON TO WIN FOR FOUR YEARS On a trip to stay with friends in Blackpool, Barry met his partner and eventually wanted to settle down. Somebody suggested he start to teach Zumba as a way to continue dancing professionally and he took the plunge and started with four classes a week. Barry explained: “It was a case of do or die. I had no idea if I would be able to fill my classes or not.

Some classes would only have two people and some 15 but within six weeks, I had to create extra classes because of the demand.”

Barry went onto training to qualify in

Zumba Gold, Zumba Toning, Zumba Kids plus Clubbericse, SOSA Dance Fitness, PoundFIT and Powerbands which he runs under his Barry Kinder Fitness banner.

And it’s not just about the dancing. Barry puts a lot of personality into his instructing and creates a community where all the participants end up as friends even throwing a Christmas party for all the groups. Within a year, Barry was nominated for a Radio Wave Lifestyle and Culture award which he went on to win for four years.

He also started to visit fitness conventions and it was at one of these that Barry was approached to enter a presenter competition where the prize was to have the fitness class brand endorsed and a slot to showcase it at the International Fitness Showcase (IFS).

Out of hundreds of entrants, Barry made it through to the finals and had to deliver a five-minute session to four judges. He said: “I wanted to go back to my musical theatre roots and had enough material and choreography and of course flamboyant music tracks to create Panache Dance Fitness. There weren’t many of these stage and screen classes and most of the instructors were female. There are so many dancers that no longer perform so I wanted to create a way for them to still earn an income from dance.” Although he didn’t win the competition he was still asked to become a presenter giving him his platform and determination to get the brand, trademarked, perfected and endorsed.

Barry is registered with EMDUK, the national governing body for group exercise and created a training programme to teach new instructors to run their own classes under the Panache Fitness banner. Current instructors include current West End performers and former professional dancers.

Being a Panache instructor comes with business and marketing support from Barry along with a full training programme. You can now find classes in Blackpool, Poulton, Preston, Lancaster, Bolton and St Annes and in Delta Hotels.

A WALK IN LYTHAM and pass over the railway bridge.

Turn right into Witch Wood which is maintained by volunteers from Lytham St Annes Civic Society. The Civic Society is developing a Heritage Trail between St Annes, Ansdell and Lytham and Witch Wood will form part of this trail. Continue to the end. Turn left to visit Lytham Hall (www.lythamhall.org.uk).

Turn right to return to the railway station. If you are interested in history, the Station Pub and Grill has an impressive display of photos of Lytham Past. These were provided by David Hoyle and the Lytham Heritage Group.

On every day except Sunday, you can make this a circuit including Lytham Hall by following these instructions: Go over the railway bridge onto Ringwood Drive, over to Maplewood Close and straight on to cross Forest Drive to the rear entrance of Lytham Hall. n

The impressive cenotaph, unveiled in 1922, commemorates the 190 Lytham service personnel who have lost their lives in both World Wars and subsequent conflicts.

Turn back and cross the zebra crossing into Clifton Square.

On the right, at the junction with Henry Street is the Lytham Heritage Centre which is housed in the former Manchester and County Bank. The Heritage Centre hosts exhibitions and also sells a range of inexpensive booklets on local history. Bear diagonally left to pass the front of The Shambles café.

Cross the zebra crossing and walk to the promenade. Turn right and continue until you are opposite Lowther Gardens. Turn right to cross the zebra crossing. Turn right and immediately sharp left to walks diagonally left through Lowther Gardens.

Lowther Gardens were formed from rough meadow land and provided in 1872 by Squire Clifton for the benefit of the residents of Lytham. The Lowther Pavilion Theatre

THE CIVIC SOCIETY IS DEVELOPING A HERITAGE TRAIL BETWEEN ST ANNES, ANSDELL AND LYTHAM AND WITCH WOOD a memorial to the 27 local lifeboatmen who lost their lives in the 1886 Mexico disaster.

RELOCATION AFTER SEPARATION: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW Sarah Robson from Forbes Solicitors outlines some legal advice about relocating with a child following separation, to help understand the approach taken by the Family Court That means one parent will inevitably spend a considerably smaller amount of time with their child.

W

hat happens if one parent wishes to relocate with a child, either within the UK or abroad, following separation? How can you stop them? How can you persuade the court it is right for the child to be allowed to relocate? What approach does the court take?

Cases where a parent is seeking to relocate with a child are said by judges to be amongst the most difficult for the family courts to decide. The court has to determine what is in the best interests of that child, focusing on the principles set out in section 1 of the Children Act 1989. The reason these cases are so difficult is because the child may well have their needs fully met in both locations, but the loss to the parent who doesn’t succeed can be devastating.

In many cases now when parents separate, they adopt a form of shared care, where the child/ren spend time with both parents. If one seeks to relocate, even within the UK, those arrangements can very rarely be maintained.

If you want to relocate with a child to another part of the country, or abroad, you need to apply to court for permission unless the other parent agrees. Similarly, if you seek to prevent a move you can apply for a prohibited steps order to prevent the move taking place.

Sometimes these applications need to be conducted urgently if a parent is moving in spite of your objection.

THE KEY TO SUCCESSFUL APPLICATIONS TO RELOCATE WITH A CHILD IS TO RECOGNISE THE IMPACT ON THE OTHER PARENT The key to successful applications to relocate with a child is to recognise the impact on the other parent. It is important to factor in what arrangements you will make for the child to spend time with the other parent, will you provide financial assistance for this? The reason for the relocation is very important, as is thorough research of the area you are moving to.

You need to research schools, accommodation, local facilities, family support, time and cost of travel to see the other parent.

If you seek to prevent a move, you need to focus on the current arrangements and persuade a court that moving is not in the child’s best interests. Again, focus on family relationships, how settled the child is.

If relevant, demonstrate that the move is motivated for the wrong reasons, or the planned move has not been properly considered. What is the detriment to the child if the move goes ahead?

The wishes and feelings of the child are relevant although not always determinative.

The court also needs to consider the needs of the child, and the effect of any change of circumstances.

In either application there is no benefit in denigrating the other parent. The court won’t be interested in the other parent’s past failings unless absolutely relevant. The key to successful applications, either way, is solid research and a well balanced and considered application, giving the court all the relevant information in a child-focused manner. n

SAYING “I DO” IN LANCASHIRE Getting married or forming your civil partnership is one of the most special and treasured occasions of your life. The Lancashire Registration service understand that choosing the right location for a ceremony is an important decision

ou can get married or form your civil partnership in Lancashire no matter where you live. Lancashire has everything to create the perfect setting for your ceremony from historic buildings, stone-built villages, coastal contrasts, rural retreats to beautiful scenery and riverside settings. We have more than one hundred premier venues that have been legally approved for ceremonies. Some of the venues have outside spaces in their grounds that have also been approved.

It is the union of two people who are aged 18 or over and free to marry or form a civil partnership i.e., not in a marriage or civil partnership already.

2. The next step is to book the ceremony with one of our experienced Ceremonies

3. The main legal task that a lot of couples don’t realise they need to do is giving what is called their individual ‘notice of intention’ in the council office where each person lives. You can’t attend to give notice of intention and have a ceremony straight away. There needs to be at least twenty-nine days before your ceremony date (up to seventy-one days if either party is subject to immigration control) to gain legal clearance for your ceremony to proceed. And ‘notices’ are only valid for twelve months so couples can’t do this task legally more than a year before the date of their ceremony.

What is marriage and civil partnership in England and Wales legally?

What are the important steps that couples need to take to plan their perfect day?

1. Decide on a venue, ensure it is legally approved and available.

Officers, who will reserve the registrars for your special day. In England and Wales for a ceremony to be legal, you need two registrars to attend your ceremony. In Lancashire, ceremonies can be booked three years in advance. You will be required to pay the full fee at the time of booking.

The symbolism of the white wedding dress as a representation of purity and virtue became deeply ingrained in Western culture.

The trend spread beyond royalty and soon brides of all backgrounds were choosing white or shades of white for their wedding attire. The white wedding dress became a symbol of new beginnings, hope and the promise of a lifelong commitment.

THE SYMBOLISM OF THE WHITE WEDDING DRESS AS A REPRESENTATION OF PURITY AND VIRTUE BECAME DEEPLY INGRAINED IN WESTERN CULTURE In the early 20th century, bridal fashions followed the fashionable styles and silhouettes of the period. The Harris has a lovely wedding dress that was worn by Flora Sefton on her wedding day on the 26th December 1914. Made from satin and lace, the dress is designed in the fashionable style of the period. The veil that was worn with this dress is decorated with orange blossoms which were the traditional symbol of virtue and fertility.

Flora was one of 400,000 women who married a soldier during World War I.

In this latest fashion column, fashion historian Scott William Schiavone takes a look at the history of the white wedding dress

The tradition of brides wearing special attire dates back to ancient times. In ancient Rome, brides wore bright colours like yellow or red, symbolising fertility and joy. However, it wasn’t until the mid-19th century that the white wedding dress gained widespread popularity.

The young Queen Victoria played a pivotal role in popularising the white wedding dress.

In 1840, when she married Prince Albert, instead of following royal protocol and wearing her state robes, she decided to wear

The 1920s brought the flapper era, with dropped waistlines and shorter hemlines.

The 1930s and 1940s saw wedding dresses reflecting the economic constraints of the time, often made from practical fabrics and featuring simple designs. The post-World War II era witnessed a return to opulence and romance and the 1960s and 1970s brought a departure from the traditional with shorter hemlines, bold patterns, and a more relaxed approach to bridal fashion.

Of course, one of the most iconic wedding dresses in modern times is that of Princess Diana. Designed by David and Elizabeth Emanuel, the gown was a breathtaking masterpiece that captivated the world when Diana married Prince Charles on 29th July 1981. The dress featured a lavish 25-foot train adorned with lace, sequins, and 10,000 pearls.

The silk taffeta gown itself boasted a romantic, fairy tale silhouette, with puffed sleeves, a fitted bodice and a voluminous skirt. During the 1980s, Diana’s dress was one of the most copied styles for blushing brides.

In recent years, bridal fashion has become more diverse than ever. Contemporary designers are not afraid to experiment with colours, textures, and unconventional silhouettes which allows brides to express their individuality.

After a short break following the birth of her two daughters, Lisa Marie, who has forged a reputation for extravagant cakes, is once again working with some of the region’s most sought-after venues and of course, couples who want a real ‘wow-factor’ wedding cake.

Now working from a dedicated studio, Lisa Marie started her cake-making from a small shop in Longridge. With a degree in the arts and having been a baking star from a young age, Lisa Marie combined her skills and began to make celebrations cakes: “My nana and mother taught me traditional baking skills,” she recalls. “After having a family, I realised I wanted to concentrate solely on wedding cakes as I absolutely adore the wedding industry!”

Lisa Marie’s success lies not only in her minute attention to detail in the decoration – it is her skill at developing cake flavours to create something totally delicious!

TASTE IS EVERYTHING! MY BUTTERSCOTCH AND COOKIE CRUMBLE CAKE FILLED WITH A BISCOFF CENTRE IS REALLY POPULAR AT THE MOMENT “Taste is everything!” she says. “I source most of my ingredients fresh from local farms and suppliers,” says Lisa Marie, who says the current on-trend flavour is her totally indulgent butterscotch and cookie crumble cake filled with a Biscoff centre.

“I will chat to couples and can create anything to reflect their style. I am never

surprised by any suggestions they may have.”

While current cake decoration trends remain largely rustic, Lisa has noticed a return to ‘retro’ formal-style decoration using royal icing and detailed piping: “I love this style as I can really show off my skills!”

When couples make an appointment to see Lisa Marie in her studio, they are able to see her cake creations as well as taste them: “The studio is lovely, it’s white with a wedding environment. Once we have had a chat and I’ve got to know them a little better, I will create a watercolour sketch of the cake and we take it from there.”

The Grammar (Year 10) pupils will now be part of a squad that follows a weekly curriculum designed by the Sale Sharks Academy, with the ultimate aim of progressing into the Academy.

Four people who have dedicated their careers to education, aerospace and law have been recognised with honorary awards from the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan). Honorary Doctorates were bestowed upon UCLan alumnus Lancastrian David Holmes OBE who spent nearly 40 years working at BAE Systems and Professor Helen Marshall OBE who was dedicated to the higher education sector.

Prestonian John Chesworth, Executive Chairman of Harrison Dury, and Alison Robinson, former Chief Executive and Principal of Myerscough College, were recognised with Honorary Fellowships.

Two University of Central Lancashire students have been selected to represent their country at American football for the first time. Kiera Collier, from Leyland, and Erika Patao, from Colchester, have been chosen to play for Great Britain’s Women’s team.

The duo will meet up with the squad at a weekend training camp in Nottingham in early January and hope to impress ahead of the internationals against Spain, in April, and Finland, in August. Nineteen-year-old Kiera, who plays centre, said: “It feels so incredible and I feel so privileged to have been selected for the GB women’s team.

I cannot wait to get started!”

MATHS MASTERS

Stonyhurst College achieved great success in 2023’s International Youth Math Challenge with pupils Sophie and Philipp awarded the Bronze Prize for placing among the top 20 per cent of all participants from more than 80 countries worldwide. November’s final round was a supervised exam of 20 questions that required comprehensive skill in several different mathematical areas to solve.

Having recently undergone its major refurbishment, Hodder House now has a number of large, bright open-plan classrooms and small class sizes. “In education, nothing stands still, and for our younger pupils we find that they enjoy a variety of engaging activities within a broad curriculum,” says Sarah. “They need to learn core skills that are also engaging and fun – children are far more engaged if they think it is their idea!”

Personal and social development are inextricably

linked to academic development – this is very important as part of our child-centred learning.”

Having children start from the age of three, not only gives them an unrivalled education, it also presents the opportunity of a seamless journey that runs through the transition points in the school. s parents, we want the best for our children, and who wouldn’t vote for a school complete with a paddock housing goats, sheep, rabbits and guinea pigs? Driving through Ashbridge’s extensive grounds, I evolve from regret that my daughters missed out on something special, to envy that I didn’t come here myself.

“Our parents are fully involved in school life and share our values,” explains Karen.

GOLD STANDARD FOR SAFETY

Lytham Festival will benefit from larger grounds and more car parking next year, while the organisers plan to trial a park and ride service to help reduce traffic pressure. Fylde Council’s Executive Committee have considered a request from Lytham Festival organisers to increase the footprint of its operational and car parking areas to relieve pressure on the town centre car parks and streets. The request also included a new agreement to grant additional car parking at land adjacent to Fairhaven Road car park for a one-year trial, to determine if park and ride facilities would further help tackle congestion.

Representatives from the business sector and Preston City Council were formally presented with a Purple Flag. It followed the earlier announcement that the city had once again received the coveted accreditation for its nightlife, safety and culture.

Like the Blue Flags scheme for beaches, Purple Flag status is given to town centres that meet or surpass the standards of excellence in managing the evening and night-time economy and is seen as the gold standard. Preston was one of the first destinations in the UK to win the award when it was launched in 2011 and has retained it for more than a decade.

Lancashire businesses have been urged to work together to build a better county by one the UK’s most respected politicians. Speaker of the House of Commons, and Chorley MP, The Right Hon. Sir Lindsay Hoyle, made the passionate speech as he addressed dozens of decision makers and members of the North & Western Lancashire Chamber of Commerce. The keynote speaker was guest of honour at the Chamber’s AGM and President’s Lunch at Heskin Hall, near Chorley. Sir Lindsay urged Lancashire businesses to collaborate more and build a better county by grasping opportunities from recent government legislation.

The latest tourism figures released (2022) have revealed that the Lancashire tourism sector continues to show a strong recovery post-pandemic with 17 million more visitor days and nights in 2022 than 2021. The county’s annual STEAM report, which evaluates the volume and value of visitors to Lancashire, has been released by Marketing Lancashire. The report analyses data from tourism and hospitality businesses gathered for 2022 and shows continued growth as the county recovers steadily from the impact of the Covid pandemic. All areas of Lancashire have shown an increase on total visitor numbers measured in the 2021 figures, but the county as a whole is still not back at pre-covid levels yet.

GROWN WITH LOVE Recent award winners, Wyreside Mushrooms of Garstang, is an amazing micro-business creating the most wonderful mushrooms utilising an intricate and painstaking process to produce organic and delicious varieties

verlooking the impressive fields of Garstang lies a small but mighty hub of mushroom growing excellence.

Owners Hayley Ward and Paul Thornton, who live in St Michael’s on Wyre, grow top quality gourmet mushrooms using low impact methods to minimise environmental impact.

A specially built laboratory houses a mycelium library of 17 species of mushroom, and the fruiting rooms provide specific conditions for the varieties to grow including grey oyster, king oyster and lion’s mane.

It all started with Paul’s grandma, Ruth.

“My grandma was always growing things and experimenting,” said Paul. “I would go to her house from primary school and she would encourage me to try to grow different things. I was fascinated by sowing an acorn

in a plastic cup and watching the seedling grow.

About 20 years ago, I got fascinated by the process of growing mushrooms. My dad is a physicist, so I naturally enjoy working out the strategy of growing the mushrooms and getting it just right.”

And what an intricate process it is. It starts with the collection of spores which are transferred onto agar dishes so mycelium – a root-like structure of the fungus – can form.

The mycelium is then transferred to bags of sterilised oak pellets which is left to colonise with holes cut for the mushrooms to grow.

It is a constant cycle with different areas within the premises to create the perfect growing conditions.

WE ARE REALLY PLEASED WITH HOW QUICKLY THE BUSINESS HAS GROWN SINCE WE SET UP IN 2022 Depending on the seasons, Hayley and Paul currently grow seven different types of mushrooms. Spores for new strains can be found in nature or can be bought from specialist producers. But as their business grows, the couple are concentrating on growing a select few varieties with plans to expand their operation over the next year.

Hayley said: “We are really pleased with how quickly the business has grown since we set up in 2022. We supply independent shops in Manchester and Lancaster and a number of local restaurants and we have

also ran pop up shops which we would like to hold more regularly. We have held several children’s workshops so people can learn more about the process of growing mushrooms and their importance in the eco-system, and plan to roll these out to adults in unique venues next year.”

Last year, Wyreside Mushrooms were awarded organic status – a rigorous process including inspections to gain the prestigious

certification. More recently, they won Micro Business of the Year in the Wyre Business Awards 2023. Hayley added: “We were shocked to be in the shortlist, but to win was amazing!”

The business has also been recognised as a stop on an artisan food tour by Bowland & Bay and representatives from Simon Rogan’s three Michelin starred L’Enclume have also dropped by.

their most optimum state. In the meantime, customers can order our mushrooms to collect at our base here at Bradley Hill Farm if they call us with a collection time. It has taken a lot of hard work and effort so far but we are ahead in our growth plans and our dedication it is paying off. We are really happy with the quality.”

THE BUSINESS HAS BEEN RECOGNISED AS A STOP ON AN ARTISAN FOOD TOUR

BY BOWLAND & BAY This year promises big things as the couple plan to expand their operation. Currently producing 45-50 kgs of mushrooms a week, they plan to increase this to 90kg a week by installing a new, larger sterilizer, taking on more staff and build online sales to be able to send their fabulous mushrooms to customers further afield.

It has been hard work to start the business with savings being ploughed into the couple’s dream, but the 120 hours a week that they spend in the business between them is paying off with firm plans in place. It is a far cry from Hayley’s former career in housing and homelessness and Paul’s career as a utility surveyor.

Paul said: “We are hoping to commission a courier with refrigerated vans so the mushrooms will be delivered to customers in

T

he Three Millstones Inn at West Bradford has been shortlisted for Lancashire Tourism’s prestigious Innovation and Resilience Award.

There are few better words to describe Matthew Frost’s thriving Ribble Valley business, which has literally risen from the ashes.

As recently as 17th July 2022, 13 fire engines were in attendance at the well-known Grade II listed hostelry as Matthew watched the flames lick 30 feet into the air. Thankfully, the skill of the fire crews contained the inferno to the pizza kitchen: “If the decking hadn’t been top quality, the flames would have engulfed the whole building,” Matthew says.

It is a measure of Matthew’s resilience and determination that within 24 hours

Like all of the Three Millstones’ rooms, the newest has independent access and is dog friendly. Such is its charm, I envision myself at the stylish patio table with a glass of wine in my hand and my dog at my feet.

The cosy new room merges the modern with the rustic in what has become the Three Millstones’ hallmark style. The décor is understated but the fabrics are plush with deep carpets and a soft velvet-covered headboard. The whole suite benefits from underfloor heating and, up three steps, is a surprisingly spacious wet-room. The room is beautifully tiled but the show-stopper is its vast shower, which runs its whole width and has a huge, sleek rainfall shower-head.

Still shaken by the possibilities that had so nearly destroyed his dreams, Matthew came to a bold decision: “There was only one answer. I had to build back better!”

THERE WAS ONLY ONE ANSWER. I HAD TO BUILD BACK BETTER! Barely 15 months from the day that almost rendered Matthew’s life’s work in ruins, he shows me into a bijou luxury suite built on the site of the blaze. “Our eleventh bedroom,” he announces – though bedroom seems a modest word for the charming split-level

Matthew’s adaptability doesn’t stop here.

His seasonal menu of locally sourced produce is currently utilising the Ribble Valley’s game season, and includes pheasant and venison.

Although the Three Millstones currently features on all well-known booking platforms, Matthew urges future guests to contact him directly: “There’s always a deal to be done,” he says. “And the personal touch allows us to be certain we are meeting your needs.” n

iz and I were thrilled to get the call to ‘test drive’ some of the new dishes on the menu at Gilpin Spice – it’s a love affair dating back seven years since the opening of the restaurant when we were lucky enough to be among the first guests to eat this delicious pan-Asian cuisine. We’ve felt part of this culinary journey ever since and this clever concept has created a second dining option at this award-winning, iconic Lake District destination.

First impressions are always around the casual laid back vibe. Relaxed, sophisticated and beautifully decorated, we’d expect nothing less from the Cunliffe family and Spice just gets better and better each time we visit. Greeted at the door by the effervescent Daniel, we chose a quiet corner table so we could take in the whole restaurant – the

open kitchen with the option to sit ‘up close and personal’ and become immersed in the action is also a great option and makes for a true dining experience.

HERDWICK LAMB RUMP BOTI – TENDER AND JUICY MEAT WITH A CORIANDER, YOGHURT, CHUTNEY AND CUMIN GRANOLA, WHICH TOOK THIS DISH TO A WHOLE NEW LEVEL Recently, the incredibly talented Tom ‘Westy’ Westerland has taken over at the helm of Spice and is in the process of curating some stunning new dishes, which were on the menu for us. I asked him about the new menu and the story behind the dishes: “I’m absolutely loving the challenge of combining fantastic Cumbrian and British ingredients with the incredible flavours of Asia. For me flavour is key, and the spices and Asian flair bring a whole new dimension to the food we cook.

We’ve had great fun doing loads of research and development for all the new dishes hitting the menu and we can’t wait for everyone to try them. Come and see us!”

homage to the history of the area. So, what of the dishes – a return to small sharing plates that evoke discussion – believe me when I tell you the dishes were so good. Westy simply gave us a selection to try and suffice to say, they were all divine. My standout plates were probably the Loch Duart salmon chirashi.

The textures of wild rice and salmon, combined with yuzu ponzu was simply sublime.

Closer to home was the Herdwick lamb rump boti – tender and juicy meat with a coriander yoghurt, chutney and cumin granola, which took this dish to a whole new level.

This Michelin listed, two-AA Rosette restaurant is first class and should be on everyone’s list to visit in 2024 – make the effort to drive from the Ribble Valley and find yourself transported into a truly authentic Asian experience. n

with the team chatting about the various cocktails – we really must come back to try their Baby Guinness and Jammy Dodger.

Our next dishes included a classic prawns pil-pil, a generous portion of prawns with just the right ‘hit’ of chilli – which of course had to be mopped up with toasted focaccia bread. No tapas meal for me would be complete without patatas bravas and this steaming dish of potatoes dressed with a spicy tomato sauce and aioli was excellent. Our final dish

iz and I were excited to try some of the tapas style dishes on the menu at the Picked Goose – having undergone a £300k refurbishment it re-opened pre-Christmas to great reviews. Diners were thrilled to see a new menu and the wide range of drinks and cocktails now available, and the pub is proving to be very popular!

We chose an early supper on a Sunday evening and were warmly welcomed by an excellent front of house team – they were courteous, friendly and very knowledgeable too with the menu options having been explained to us.

The snacks and tapas selections were

Salt and pepper squid, crisp and moreish with a creamy aioli on the side, roasted sweet potatoes with crispy chickpeas with a yoghurt dressing – full of flavour and textures – both were instant hits.

en Blackwell is 42 and lives in Chorley.

Her greatest passion in life is dance.

Jen also has Down’s syndrome but has never let her disability stop her from living life to the full. After she left school, Jen and her mum, Sue, spent 10 years searching for the right dance training opportunities that would allow her to follow her dream to be a dance leader and performer. After all those years of searching, they couldn’t find anything that was accessible for Jen because of her learning disability, so in 2009 they took matters into their own hands and set up their own organisation, Lancashire-based charity DanceSyndrome.

an achievement or contribution of a very ‘hands-on’ service to the community in a local geographical area. This often takes the form of sustained commitment in support of very local charitable and/or voluntary activity or innovative work that has delivered real impact.

Amanda was appointed to the role of Lord-Lieutenant of Lancashire

by King Charles III following the retirement of Lord Shuttleworth after 26 years in the role. She officially took over the role on 2nd August 2023 becoming the first female Lord-Lieutenant of Lancashire in almost 500 years.

DanceSyndrome team have been recognised for their work. The charity has been the recipient of many local and national awards over the last 10 years, most notably receiving the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, the MBE equivalent for volunteer groups, in 2019. This prestigious honour recognises the exceptional contributions made to local communities by groups voluntarily devoting their time for the benefit of others. Jen was thrilled to be invited to Buckingham Palace to celebrate achieving this award.

Jen said: “I’m amazed to receive this honour for what I love doing. I’m proud of who I am and the achievements of DanceSyndrome.

It’s an honour to inspire others to dance and live a life of their choosing. I believe that everybody can dance and do things they love no matter how other people define us.”

I BELIEVE THAT EVERYBODY CAN DANCE AND DO THINGS THEY LOVE NO MATTER HOW OTHER PEOPLE DEFINE US The DanceSyndrome team strives to continue to provide new and exciting opportunities for people who may otherwise be excluded from mainstream dance. They believe that everyone has the right to follow their own interests and passions – whether they have a disability or not. They work with learning-disabled and non-disabled company members, and we provide inclusive dance and leadership opportunities for people who believe disability need not be a barrier to living life to the full.

In 2024, the team will be focusing on delivering their work as an Arts Council National Portfolio Organisation. In March, they are looking forward to an incredible showcase event called EXPRESS ’24 at Blackburn Empire Theatre, which will see all their different community groups from across Lancashire coming together to perform at one big event, with climate and environment as the theme.

They are also planning a tour of ‘SENse’ the performance piece which the company took to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2023 and are currently looking for theatres across the North West who might be interested in booking the show in the early part of 2024 so they can share this beautiful, thought-provoking performance piece.

This will be the first time DanceSyndrome has toured a piece in this way, so it’s a very exciting prospect for the team. Jen said: “We can’t wait to go on tour. My dream is

to get the world dancing so I love to dance for new people. Dance is a vehicle, it’s a driving force and I really believe that.”

The DanceSyndrome Collective performance company has 20 dancers, with and without disabilities. Over the last year, they have had 311 people participating in the co-led community inclusive dance

sessions and have engaged with more than 3,000 people through community outreach work. n

AN EVENING OF ART A new concept that will give dinner guests the opportunity to learn about the work of three critically acclaimed artists is to be held at a renowned Ribble Valley hotel and restaurant

using inspirational art with innovative food is the idea behind a fabulous evening that will see a collaboration between Longridge Gallery and Gibbon Bridge, introducing guests to three nationally acclaimed artists.

On 22nd March 2024 the Art & Dinner experience will feature works by Michael Ashcroft, Andrei Protsouk and John Russell – each at the top of their game but with differing views of the world.

Dinner guests will arrive to a welcome

drink and a carefully curated exhibition featuring the three artists’ work. With each artist demonstrating a different style, guests will have the chance to browse the exhibition before dinner is served.

During the evening, there will be a presentation by Longridge Gallery’s Alistair Sheret, who will speak about the artwork, the artists themselves and their contrasting styles.

Michael Ashcroft grew up in the heart of Lancashire and after leaving school in 1985 he began his career as an engineer,

painting and sketching only in his spare time. In 1998 after he had a major operation to remove a brain tumour, he decided to paint more seriously and returned to college.

Over the years his paintings have evolved from early abstracts in acrylics to using oils in more representational works painted on location. The foundations that underpin his paintings haven’t changed – his fascination with light and dark and his love of the city and the landscape.

He is a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and Manchester Academy of Fine Arts. He has exhibited with the Royal Society of British Artists, the Howard De Walden Exhibition and the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in London.

Art critic David Lee says of Michael: “In his landscapes as well as his views of the city, he willingly lays bare his pleasures and beliefs.”

Andrei Protsouk was born in the industrial city of Donetsk in Ukraine and his work now hangs in private collections of notable figures including George Bush and is considered to have excellent investment potential.

Demonstrating an exceptional gift for art from a young age, on leaving school Protsouk attended the prestigious Lugansk School of Fine Art and the Ilya Repin Leningrad Institute – widely regarded as one of the world’s finest art training programmes.

Protsouk studied under Evsey Moiseenko, a world renowned contemporary of Marc Chagall and Pablo Picasso. Moiseenko adopted

Protsouk as his protegee, recognising the potential of his remarkable talent. Protsouk’s early work reflected the melancholy of Soviet living conditions, using heavy textures and a dark colour palette. In 1994 Protsouk moved with his family to the US, where he quickly established himself as a prominent figure on the contemporary art scene. His paintings became more colourful, his subjects more joyful and much of his work now centres around the universal theme of love, frequently depicting couples in the midst of passionate dances or embraces. His use of constructive line demonstrates his innate understanding of the human form, drawing comparisons to the figurative works of Michaelangelo.

He now works from a studio within his own gallery in Pennsylvania, continuing to experiment with a range of media and subject matter. His talent has resulted in phenomenal commercial success, having completed commissions for Johnnie Walker and Coca Cola.

John Russell is a Scottish artist now living on a farm in northern England. His work depicts British landscapes featuring brooding skies, which are skilfully crafted and stylised – the foreground dramatically lit to great effect often by a bright and striking moon. His work combines a mix of traditional with a contemporary finish that is sometimes enhanced by a resin coating. Interestingly, his palette is often matched to that of paint-maker Farrow & Ball resulting in the block colours he uses, being sympathetic in contemporary interiors. From Yorkshire farms to Highland crofts, Lakeland cottages to Cornish mines, rugged, barren scenes are his favourite subject matter. John’s work, which is highly soughtafter, is enigmatic and thought provoking.
