I’m sure everyone’s familiar with the favorite refrain realtors use when asked for the top three factors in determining the value of a home – location, location, and location. Similarly, the most quoted line from the classic movie “Wizard of Oz” is just as familiar to everyone – “I don’t think we’re in Kansas anymore.”

I bring these two pop-culture references to your attention to describe what’s happening in Prosper’s economic development efforts. Our Town is situated in what might best be described as the confluence of “right place and right time.” Residents see the fruits of that every day, as the Town’s burgeoning commercial activity is complemented by the carefullyplanned construction of highly-desirable residential development.

We are, for reasons that predate all of us, in the right place, and this is indeed the right time. Location, location and location adequately describes our situation rather well. Resting on the very-desirable Highway 380 on our south end, gives us that economic engine that drives retail and commercial business. Called the next significant economic development corridor of North Texas, the Highway 380 stretch between McKinney and Denton is quickly becoming a shopping, dining and recreational destination. Being at the center of that stretch certainly qualifies as the right location.

To new residents, it’s perhaps one of the deciding reasons for choosing Prosper as their home, but for many of us who have been here for a decade or more, we might say, “I don’t think we’re in Prosper anymore.” Truth be

told, though, the tremendous amount of growth that we’re seeing, both from a residential and commercial perspective, is almost exactly what was envisioned 10, 15, 20 years ago. Prosper has almost always been prominent on the long-range sights of developers and demographers.

We’re definitely still in Prosper, and we want to maintain what makes Prosper special, while at the same time sprouting into our proper place in the larger economic development landscape. The current Council, along with those that came before us, have long known that Prosper would one day mature into something impressive. The careful nurturing of that vision, sometimes disharmoniously but always respectfully, is now beginning to show tangible results. And, that’s a benefit to residents in many ways. Not only is the retail activity a major convenience, but the diversification of our local economy with the addition of more commercial property means that we can shift some of the tax burden more equally.

As you know, we recently added former Frisco Mayor Maher Maso to lead the Town’s economic development efforts, and I think we’ve got the right person for the right job! His experience, his networks, his enthusiasm, and his understanding of our vision all combine to make Maher just right for Prosper. Darcy Schroer, new VP of EDC’s Marketing and Communications, adds yet another dimension to the team with her experience at the Frisco EDC. Right location? Yes, yes and yes!

The parade procession will start at Reynolds Middle School down Church Street to the official starting point at Broadway and Church.

The parade will proceed down Broadway turning right on Coleman towards Prosper High School.

The parade will end at the intersection of Coleman and Talon Way, prior to the front of PHS. Immediately following the parade will be the annual Community Pep Rally held in the PHS Arena.

Prosper Historical Society: Preserving the past while looking to the future

The Town of Prosper is in a time of great growth and developments, but do you also know its history? Do you know our Town’s origins, the development, the importance of the railroad and cotton gin, and how changes in the economy molded our Town? There’s a group of wonderful individuals that work hard to ensure the past is preserved and continues on in Prosper, and those people are members of the Prosper Historical Society.

Jack Dixon, current PHS President says, “My mission for the Prosper Historical Society is to continue and enhance the preservation of the history of the Town of Prosper. We will be having more public events to let more of our residents see and hear what has made Prosper the town that it is today. The building of the Historical Society’s Veteran Memorial at Frontier Park is our number one priority. This memorial will honor all the Prosper men and women who have served in the military to keep the freedoms we have today.”

Prosper Historical Society has many avenues to learn about Prosper’s fascinating history. A valuable and comprehensive history is covered in the two volume book set “Prosper, Texas: Its History and Families” written by the late Bill Hays. A visit to the Historical Museum in the PISD Board Room will captivate and educate all ages of inquiring minds. The society’s monthly meetings are an informative and important way to be involved.

Historical members themselves are each a wealth of information as well.

Last December saw a new activity and fundraiser for Prosper Historical Society in its annual Christmas Ornament sales. Donna Elliot, past president and current member of the annual Christmas Ornament Committee, says, “I love that we have begun to put our Town into a Christmas ornament.

Some of the history is still standing but there are buildings that will always be engrained in the ones of us that got to experience seeing these wonderful historical spots in Prosper. Let’s remember the history of Prosper every year at Christmas with a special ornament and a reconnection to the history of our Town.”

2016 ornaments are still available for $18 each at Independent Bank, Lynn Gross, CPA, and through Prosper Historical Society members Donna Elliott and Joann Slaven. 2016 and 2017 ornaments will also be sold at the Prosper Christmas Festival at the Historical Society’s booth, along with other PHS goods. Plans are underway for the 2017 ornament, which will showcase the original Prosper High School used from 1923 – 1963.

Although several members of Prosper Historical Society have long family ties and history here in Prosper, you don’t need to be from Prosper or the surrounding area to be involved. Molly Jones, PHS member, says, “We moved here 5 ½ years ago and love Prosper for the qualities we have seen in abundance that make our town one of a kind. I appreciate the mission and achievements of the Prosper Historical Society. Preserving the artifacts, photographs, and stories of founders, veterans, business owners, students, and farmers in Prosper’s past shapes us as a community and reminds us to make a positive and lasting impact here too.”

Want to join this wonderful group of caring people? All community members, regardless of age, are welcome to attend a meeting. Annual membership is as little as $10 for an individual, family membership is $25, and a business may join for $50. The PHS Facebook is also an avenue to become familiar with the group. Consider joining this fantastic group of people that are working hard to keep history alive in Prosper for the good of current and future residents. PHS President Jack Dixon invites all to join, “The Historical Society meets every second Tuesday of the month and I would like to encourage all the residents to join our meetings and participate with keeping the history of Prosper.”

Orange-Cranberry Scones Servings: 6 scones Scones: 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour 1/4 cup granulated sugar 2 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 4 tablespoons cold butter 2 large eggs 1/2 cup TruMoo Orange Scream Milk 1/2 cup dried cranberries 1 tablespoon grated orange peel Orange Glaze: 1/2 cup confectioners’ sugar 1 tablespoon TruMoo Orange Scream Milk

To prepare Scones: Heat oven to 425 F. In large bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. With pastry blender or two knives, cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in eggs, one at a time, then milk, cranberries and orange peel.

Turn dough onto lightly floured surface. Refrigerate 30 minutes, or until firm. Pat dough into 8-inch round, about 3/4-inch thick. Cut into six wedges; carefully separate wedges and place on parchment-lined baking sheet about two inches apart. Bake about 15 minutes until lightly golden and crusty.

To prepare Orange Glaze: In small bowl, combine confectioners’ sugar and milk until well blended. Cool scones slightly. Drizzle scones with glaze.

Orange Custard Bread Pudding Servings: 6 1 loaf (16 ounces) sliced raisin-cinnamon bread 2 cups TruMoo Orange Scream Milk 3 large eggs 1/2 cup granulated sugar 1 tablespoon grated orange peel 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1/4 teaspoon orange extract 1/8 teaspoon salt

confectioners’ sugar Heat oven to 350 F. Cut raisin bread into 1-inch pieces (about 8 cups). In large bowl, whisk together milk, eggs, sugar, orange peel, nutmeg, orange extract and salt. Toss with raisin bread to mix well.

Butter 2-quart casserole or baking dish. Pour bread mixture into dish.

Place in center of deep, ovenproof pan. Pour boiling water into pan until it reaches halfway up sides of dish. Place pan on center rack in oven. Bake until just set, about 40 minutes. Carefully remove from oven.

To serve, sprinkle with confectioners’ sugar. Serve warm.

Kenny Thacker – Faith, Family, and Bluegrass music Lead Pastor at Lighthouse Christian Fellowship Church and 2016 Prosper Person of the Year Nominee, Kenny Thacker’s talents are many and varied.

He’s a family man, religious man, music man, a Bluegrass celebrity, and a bit of a family historian. Originally from Kentucky, Kenny moved his family to Prosper 12 years ago. Married to his wife Lynn for 35 years, he is proud to be a father to a son and a daughter, and his eyes light up when he speaks of his grandchildren. 13 year old Madeline, 8 year old Kaelan, and 5 year old Cadence Grace are surely growing up listening to fascinating stories from their grandfather about music and family members who were impressionable to him.

Kenny has a long history with bluegrass music, and many would never guess his love for and involvement in the music industry. “Music is a passion and a calling. It’s been a wonderful thing and part of my life I can’t remember not having.” Raised with his mother’s side of the family, he was born in eastern Kentucky where he describes it as “the middle of nowhere.”

Kenny describes his family growing up as a musical family. “I grew up sitting on the front porch in the evenings, that’s where family and friends met and whoever could sing and play did that. At an early age I picked up a guitar and joined in too. I got my first guitar when I was 6 and by the time I turned 11 I went on the road with a band.” Being in a band at 11 years of age may seem a bit startling, but his uncle had a band and when a member suddenly quit, he turned to Kenny because he believed in his abilities and asked him to join. The band was made up of his uncle and his two daughters, who were 15 and 13 at the time. They were a rare novelty as

there were no youth bands like there are today. The Sloane Family played bluegrass music at festivals where Bill Monroe, the father of Bluegrass, was in the audience at one particular festival, and liked them so much he required anyone who booked him, to also book The Sloane Family as well.

Kenny says of Monroe, he “took a likin to us.” So did listeners, because before long they were signed to a label, there was a record deal, and they played at the Grand Ole Opry.

When the children reached an age where they would need to attend formal education or get tutors on the road, his uncle “pulled the plug on it all and said you are not all quitting school.” Education became the deciding factor in the band’s end. Kenny said, “It devastated me, that was my dream and I thought I was going to be a musican, and not knowing at the time, he did me the biggest favor ever.”

It was then that Kenny had an experience with the Lord and came to faith.

“I realized the real call in my life. I stopped playing professionally, but I never stopped playing. It became a hobby and a passion.” Thereafter, Kenny met Jesus and his wife and began his path to being a minister. Music is an important part of religion services to Kenny. When his musical friends play at the church it’s an experience of getting to interact as a family rather than a music star coming to give a performance. When asked to describe his congregation at Lighthouse Christian in one or two words, he answered “community” without hesitation. “The feedback we hear about our congregation is friendly. Family is a high value of ours here at the church because we are not trying to create a sense of family, we are trying to build family. Community and family, that’s who we are here.”

When asked about who has been influential to Kenny in his life he said two men in particular: “my grandfather and Dudley Hall.” Kenny’s grandfather

is a standout as a personal hero. “He’s the one who had time for me. He was the guiding light. He taught me how to treat people the same and with respect. My grandfather said often ‘you ain’t no better than nobody in this world, but there ain’t nobody in this world no better than you.’ And I heard that enough that I truly believed it.” Kenny’s childhood memories are crisp and concise, and his stories and music are steeped with a deep love for his family roots.

“A few years ago I felt the desire to stick my finger back into music, and with encouragement from friends, I made a record that was a tribute to my grandfather who was my hero. He was an underground coal miner who worked at that since the age or 13. He was a musician, banjo player, fountain of wisdom, and funny. Spending an evening on the front porch with him you would get this mixture of mountain music and bits of wisdom about life. Hilarious stories about the characters of the town. I always felt bad for people who didn’t get to spend an evening on the front porch with my grandpa. When I occasionally do a program An Evening on the Front Porch is what the venue is billed as and tries to recreate what that was like – deep mountain songs, a little bit of funny stuff, wisdom here and there about life, and stories about the characters I grew up with.”

Kenny describes Dudley Hall as a father figure to him, both spiritual and natural father.

“He’s a big hero in my life. One of the reasons I came here was to be closer to him. He’s in Grapevine at a network of churches, and it’s a little bit of a dream come true getting to work with your hero.” Dudley Hall says of Kenny, “Kenny is a multi-gifted vessel of honor in the King’s house. His hillbilly upbringing uniquely provided the atmosphere to grow a son able to connect with the common man.

His trust in God’s grace made him capable of relating to the elite classes of society. He eagerly seeks accountability and knows where honor is due. I am so proud of him.”

When asked to give a piece of advice to his grandchildren, Kenny got quiet and thoughtful for a bit. A sense of pride and love crossed his face and he said, “Discover your purpose as quickly as possible. My grandpa would say ‘find out what you love and figure out a way to make money at it and you’ll never work again a day in your life.’ And what that means, find your purpose. That makes life a whole lot better.”

Kenny Thacker’s love for God, family, music, and his Appalachian history make him a unique asset to Prosper. If you already know Kenny, then you are aware of his many talents, but if you do not know him, then be sure to meet him and listen to his music.

The Stress of It All

There is a new season upon us and with that brings quite a lot of busyness and options. School is in full swing, sports are in full swing, work, etc… With all of the chaos of life often times we can feel as though the stress is overwhelming.

Statistics show that 44 percent of Americans say they have more stress now than they did five years ago. They also show that one out of five are in extreme stress. Sixty percent of all illness and diseases have their roots in stress. The good news about stress is that God’s Word actually has quite a lot to say about the topic.

In life, we have many stressors: relationships, conflict, marriage, singleness, deadlines, legal problems, divorce, new jobs, old jobs, illness, parenting, expectations of others, etc. All of these can begin to mount on us if we are not careful in how we deal with them.

Jesus promised that issues would come. John 16:33 says “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

I cannot guarantee that your circumstances will change but that you can have peace in the midst of them. Psalm 34:19 says this: “Many are the afflictions of the righteous, But the Lord delivers him out of them all.”

Afflictions out of the Hebrew here was a form of torture that they would tie you to a post and stack rock after rock on you until it would finally crush you. Some of us may feel and say that if just one more thing happens or one more rock is placed on me that I would be crushed.

Psalm 62:5-10 says this: 5Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him. 6Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will not be shaken. 7My salvation and my honor depend on God he is my mighty rock, my refuge. 8Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge. 9Surely the lowborn are but a breath, the highborn are but a lie. If weighed on a balance, they are nothing; together they are only a breath.10Do not trust in extortion or put vain hope in stolen goods; though your riches increase, do not set your heart on them.

In the middle of stress, we must place our hope in God. If we place it in something different it will only provide temporary relief and not everlasting peace.

Here are three principles that I pray can help you and I to deal with our stress correctly.

1) Live with a sense of purpose and urgency.

We should all ask God what our purpose is and seek to make sure that everything we do and say lines up with our purpose. We often times spend a lot of our time and energy on things that don’t matter for eternity.

2) Put First Things First.

We must put our priorities in line in order to handle stress well. God must be placed first, our marriages, our families, etc. When we allow other things to take importance over what really matters it causes undue stress that can easily be avoided.

3) Keep my Heart Set on Heaven.

We have to lower our expectations of earth. We have to get to a place where what is finite does not define our time and resources, but what is eternal. God has something special planned for all of us and if we could grasp onto that we would see that Jesus didn’t come to offer us just a better now, but Jesus came to offer us a better place!

John 14:1-2 NIV: “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me.

My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you?”

Let us all keep our hearts and eyes focused on the things in life that truly matter and say yes to the right things and no to the wrong things.
