Making Summer Fun Safe

8 | WeAreProsper.com

Longer days and lighter schedules make summer perfect for relaxing, having fun outdoors and spending time with loved ones. However, more physical activity and time spent in the sun can also translate to increased health and safety risks. As you and your family enjoy the warmth and sunshine while swimming, biking, grilling, playing on the playground and more this summer, remember these precautions from the experts at the American Heart Association.

WAYNE BARTLEY

Watch for Signs of Heat Stress On hot summer days, be alert for signs of heat illnesses, such as heat cramps, heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Even when it doesn’t seem extreme, heat and humidity can take a toll. Some signs of heat-related illness include muscle pain, cramps or spasms; heavy sweating; paleness; dizziness; headache; nausea or vomiting; confusion; fainting or unconsciousness; high body temperature (greater than 100 F) with dry skin; and rapid pulse. If you experience any of these symptoms, take a break, drink some water and find shade or air conditioning to cool off. Stay Hydrated Staying hydrated is important for optimal body functioning, especially during the hot and humid months. If you plan to spend a lot of time outdoors, frequently consuming water and foods with high water content – melons, lettuce, and cucumbers, for example – can help replace the fluids lost via sweat. In addition, be aware of the signs and symptoms of mild dehydration, including a dry or sticky mouth; dry, cool skin; headache; or muscle cramps. Learn CPR As summertime activities expose people of all ages to risks, it’s important to be trained in CPR – or cardiopulmonary resuscitation – an emergency lifesaving procedure that is performed when the heart stops beating. If performed immediately, it can double or triple a cardiac arrest victim’s chance of survival, according to the American Heart Association. However, only about 40% of people who experience out-of-hospital cardiac arrest receive help before professionals arrive. Because about 74% of adult and 87.5% of child out-of-hospital cardiac arrests happen in homes, you will likely be trying to save the life of someone you love – a child, spouse, parent or friend – if called upon to perform CPR. Hands-Only CPR is recommended for members of the general public. Call 9-1-1, or send someone to do so, then push hard and fast in the center of the person’s chest until medical assistance arrives. Use an AED, if available, following the prompts. Conventional CPR is the next step and involves chest compressions and mouth-tomouth breathing but should only be used by health care professionals and those trained to perform it correctly.

Protect Skin from the Sun While it’s easy to get caught up enjoying activities outdoors, remember to take steps to protect your skin from the sun’s damaging rays. Limit your time in the sun, especially during the midday hours when the rays are strongest, and wear sunscreen to help reduce your risk of sunburn. Experts recommend sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Wearing sunglasses, a hat and cool, long-sleeved clothing can further limit exposure when outdoors for long periods of time. Swim Safely

Now Open inside our Showroom!

Whether enjoying the pool, beach, lake or river, bodies of water can be dangerous if appropriate precautions aren’t taken. In fact, drowning is among the top five causes of unintentional injury death in the United States, according to the CDC. Avoid swimming alone, especially in natural bodies of water that aren’t clear and may present strong currents or underwater obstacles, and don’t overestimate your swimming ability. Going Above and Beyond to Make the Impossible, Possible From the Desk of Dr. Holly Ferguson The summer is one of the busiest times of the year in Prosper ISD because we are preparing and planning for the upcoming school year. We ended this past school year with 22,652 students enrolled in the Prosper ISD. Throughout the 2021-2022 school year, we added 2,949 students which is an all-time high. Our projected enrollment for the 2022-2023 school year is 24,220 and within five years we are projected to have 33,458 students. Prosper ISD is a destination district and one that is a highlight across Texas. One of the main reasons that our district is so highly sought after is because of our incredible staff and teachers who go above and beyond each day to make the impossible, possible. This year we will add over 450 employees to the district to support our students and parents. Within any organization, it is crucial that new employees understand the standards and expectations. I meet with each and every professional new hire beginning in May to August. It is important to the PISD Board of Trustees and to me that each person that will be joining us understands that they are valued and appreciated from the moment they are hired. During my time with the new hires, I let them know how important their story of impact will be in Prosper ISD. I also thank them for choosing to make a difference in Prosper ISD. Our teachers and staff are truly the heartbeat of Prosper ISD. Below are the important reminders that I share with them: Students come first! Don’t prop doors - safety matters most. Our students deserve our absolute best, each and every day. They are depending on you, and I am too. Excellence is our standard every day in every way. Be kind because kindness matters. Magic happens when you don’t give up. Communication is key and will almost always save the day. The small details matter, look for them and then make a difference to make things better. And last but not least LOVE WHAT YOU DO and the rest will fall into place. I want to end with thanking each person in the Prosper ISD community that loves, adores, and respects our staff and teachers. It is not lost on me that without a highly supportive community that truly believes in educators, that we would not be where we are today in this great district. Thank you for your commitment to excellence and valuing the high-quality public education that our students receive in Prosper ISD.

Town of Prosper Adds 163 Acres to its Parks and Trail System The Town of Prosper has acquired 163 acres of land from the developer of Windsong Ranch to add to the Town’s parks and trail system. The purchase of this land will significantly increase and preserve the green space for the community to enjoy as the Town continues to grow. This land acquisition is located south of Fishtrap Road between the Glenbrooke and Windsong Ranch subdivisions. The 163-acre property will serve as a significant addition that will allow for more parks and trails as well as trail connectivity and amenities that currently exist on the property which include a mountain bike trail. “The Prosper Parks and Recreation Department is excited to add this land to the Town of Prosper’s park system. This addition will allow us to expand our current recreational offerings, add some passive recreational space, create future trail connections and allow for the future addition of park amenities,” said Parks and Recreation Director Dan Baker. Prosper’s unique and impressive array of parks currently encompasses nearly 469 acres of open spaces, recreational venues and facilities for sports and fitness. The Town’s natural beauty is enhanced by areas and trails that provide serene settings for recreation and relaxation for all ages. Check out over 43 miles of hike and bike trails that have developed throughout Prosper! To learn more about the Town of Prosper’s parks and trail system, visit ProsperParksandRec.org.

4 Ways Color Can Make Your House a Haven If ever there was a need to create a tranquil escape from the chaos of the world, the time is now. Converting your living space into a soul-soothing refuge may be easier than you think as a serene color palette is often all you need to shift the mood of your home. For many people, the home is a personal sanctuary, and through thoughtful color design, you can discover a renewed sense of balance and ease each time you walk through your front door. Incorporating colors inspired by simplicity and serenity can create spaces that transform the home into a soothing and comfortable space. A restorative style starts with soft and natural colors; simplicity, approachability and comfort are also essential. Softened tones keep things easy and uncomplicated for spaces that feel balanced and meaningful. To start creating a peaceful refuge within your home, consider these tips from the experts at HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams to discover how to use color to paint a sense of calm for all who enter. Peace on the Porch Fuss-free styling on the front porch sets a tone for the ambiance inside. Make sure all who enter know this is a place of calm and comfort by using soft, subtle colors. A fresh coat of exterior paint – or a new shade on the front door – can help freshen and brighten the space while purposeful, understated furnishings and accessories lend themselves to a graceful welcome. 22 | WeAreProsper.com

Balanced Bedroom There’s no space quite like the bedroom to command a peaceful presence. A curated palette like the HGTV Home by SherwinWilliams 2022 Color Collection of the Year offers multiple options that exude peacefulness and facilitate tranquility. The Softened Refuge Collection, available exclusively at Lowe’s, is composed of 10 soft and simple tones that can be mixed and matched in any combination for a perfectly cohesive look. One highlight is the 2022 Color of the Year, Aleutian, a washed indigo that is grounded by the warmth of its red undertones and bridges the gap between warm and cool tones. It pairs beautifully with wood tones so you can easily incorporate practical furnishings that lend to an aura of relaxation and comfort. Laid-Back Living Room Color that mimics the hues found naturally outdoors tend to soothe the soul. Introduce natural calm to a place your family enjoys congregating by updating walls to a sophisticated organic green that is rooted in nature. Carry the relaxed mood throughout the room with complementing nature-inspired neutrals for your furniture, window treatments and accent pieces. Subtle Kitchen Spice A stark white kitchen may feel crisp and clean, but it lacks the character that color brings. You can keep that airy feeling while infusing some gentle, welcoming warmth. Painted cabinets are on trend, so this is a perfect place to play with color. Use a light neutral taupe for the cabinets then balance with a warm, creamy white on the walls. If you’re worried the space may be dull, infuse a bit of color with a neutral blue on the backsplash. The soft hues work harmoniously for a simple but stylish space.

Local Expertise Innovative Approach Real Integrity STACY CATE

“The Softened Refuge palette is designed to simplify color selection for a perfectly coordinated home design,” said Ashley Banbury, HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams senior color designer. “Color combinations within the Collection can easily be used to craft spaces that help promote positive physical and mental well-being.” Find more ideas for creating a sanctuary at home at hgtvhomebysherwinwilliams.com.

WHAT TO DO ABOUT THOSE PESKY MOSQUITOES Do you spend a significant amount of time landscaping the yard in summer? Then you know that insect bites are a fact of life. Such awareness could well save your life in this age of the West Nile virus, when insect bites can be deadly. But if you’re concerned about the longterm health consequences of applying chemicals to your skin, then the use of natural mosquito repellants may be your solution to the challenge posed by West Nile virus. If we take “natural mosquito repellants” in the broadest sense, several options present themselves. Some people burn citronella in a candle, while others apply it to the skin as topical oil. In the latter case, citronella is sometimes used in concert with other oils, derived from plants such as castor bean or catnip. Avon’s “Skin-So-Soft” is among the most popular “natural” mosquito repellants used topically. You’ve probably heard of high tech’s answer for natural mosquito repellants: the Mosquito Magnet (and similar products). It’s a device that gives off a gas simulating human breath, whereby it lures mosquitoes into its death chamber. Even how you dress can influence whether you suffer insect bites. Mosquitoes are drawn to dark-colored clothing. So, while not technically “natural mosquito repellants,” clothes that are light-colored can certainly be viewed as weapons in your mosquito-control arsenal. From a Landscaping Perspective, what can be done about West Nile Virus? Besides using mosquito repellants to protect your person against insect bites, those working on the landscape can take measures to help stop the spread of West Nile virus. Since West Nile virus is transmitted to humans via mosquitoes, and since the larvae of mosquitoes are found in standing water, one group of measures should obviously focus on sources of standing water in your landscaping. But just what those sources consist of can be far from obvious. Prevention: Killing Mosquito Larvae We know that fish eat bugs. So perhaps you’ve thought, “Too bad there isn’t there a ‘mosquito fish’ I could put in my water garden to eat mosquito larvae.” Well, believe it or not, the mosquito fish isn’t a mythical beast, a benevolent creature found only in our dreams, like the mermaid. There really is such a thing as a mosquito fish! 24 | WeAreProsper.com

I’ll have more to say about the mosquito fish below. But first, let’s consider the role of mosquito larvae in our war against West Nile virus. Successfully killing mosquitoes is based on a simple yet important observation. When mosquitoes become adults, they rule the skies. Locating and killing winged bugs is difficult. Let’s face it: the bugs are small and the sky is big. It’s like trying to find a needle in a haystack. Consequently, mosquito control that focuses instead on killing mosquito larvae or depriving mosquitoes of breeding grounds makes a lot of sense. If you can eliminate sources of standing water on your landscaping (in which mosquito larvae are born), you’re hitting mosquitoes where it really hurts. Or else you can kill the mosquito larvae while they’re still confined to the water. They’re sitting ducks while they remain wingless, swimming in an artificial pond, say, or a swimming pool -- because they’re in a medium (water) that is contained in a finite, easily-managed area. This is the time to kill them! And you can even do so without resorting to chemicals, if you prefer, for instance: By using BT bacteria (Bacillus thuringiensis), which attack mosquito larvae but pose no threat to other life forms. Or by acquiring the eaters of mosquito larvae mentioned above, the aptly named “mosquito fish.” But before considering ways to kill the larvae in areas of your landscaping where you intentionally keep standing water, let’s look at some of the sources of standing water that you might not immediately think of: Water buckets and rain barrels. Bottles and cans. Empty plastic pots from the nursery and other concave odds and ends you threw in a pile behind the garage. Old car tires (notorious rain-catchers). That wheelbarrow you’ve been meaning to bring inside, as soon as you fix its flat tire.... Boat tarps or pool covers in which water can puddle. Uneven areas in lawns or gardens where irrigation water can collect. Clogged rain gutters and clogged drains.

Birdbaths and water bowls for pets. Seepage from septic tanks. But that still leaves the standing water that you wish to keep, such as that in swimming pools and water fountains. How can you kill the mosquito larvae which may be lurking in these places? Keep swimming pools clean, aerated and chlorinated.

Now Open in Celina!

A bacteria called “Bti” (Bacillus thuringiensis) is often used for mosquito larvae control in standing water. Aerate artificial ponds. Avoid the temptation to mass aquatic plants together excessively in artificial ponds (mosquito larvae can hide from the fish if the vegetation is dense). Stock artificial ponds with fish that eat mosquito larvae. But which fish are the best eaters of mosquito larvae? Minnows and goldfish are common denizens of artificial ponds, and they do a fine job of eating mosquito larvae. But another fish, Gambusia affinis, has acquired such a reputation as an eater of mosquito larvae that it has been nicknamed, “mosquito fish.” Contact your local municipality regarding the availability of mosquito fish in your area. Formerly an obscure species, the mosquito fish is now enjoying the limelight due to the West Nile invasion of North America.

I never thought that a fish might save my life.... QUESTION: Jimmie, I have a question about the Rose of Sharon trees I bought last fall. The rabbits and other creatures have nibbled the plants, some to the ground and others to within a few inches of the original 18” plant. Will they grow from the roots? I fertilized and mulched, but I did not enclose them in wire cages. Is it too late? They haven’t leafed out yet, but it is still early as I write this.” – Patricia K. ANSWER: Hi Patricia! Guess you can understand why Elmer Fudd felt the way he did about Bugs Bunny. I believe there is a good chance that your Rose of Sharon will come back from the roots. But when they do, you might want to spray them – and anything else the rabbits are bothering – with a product called Rabbit Stopper. It works by smell and taste and can still be effective after quite a heavy rain. You can also use Fox/Coyote Urine granules and a newer product call Scram!

Pair Perfectly Grilled Steak with a Cool, Creamy Sidekick

Firing up the grill and watching tender cuts sizzle on the grates means a mouthwatering meal is on the way, but don’t forget about the dressings and toppings that make summertime dinners truly delicious. The next time you want to sear a juicy steak, try this Filet Mignon with Blue Cheese Chive Butter recipe from Omaha Steaks Executive Chef David Rose. Thick, tender filet mignon is grilled to a warm medium-rare doneness then topped with cool, creamy, homemade butter: its perfect summer sidekick. Discover more grilling inspiration at OmahaSteaks.com/Summer.

To make blue cheese chive butter: In medium bowl, use rubber spatula to fold and incorporate butter, blue cheese, chives, salt and pepper. Section 18 inches of plastic wrap and place blue cheese chive butter about 6 inches above bottom. Take bottom portion of plastic wrap and place over blue cheese chive butter then shape butter into 1 1/2-inch cylinder. Continue to roll butter in plastic; pinch ends of plastic wrap while rolling to tighten cylinder. Once size and tightness are achieved, tie off loose ends of plastic wrap and chill in refrigerator 1-2 hours, until blue cheese chive butter is chilled and firm. To make filet mignon: Bring filet mignons to room temperature, about 20 minutes; pat dry and season on both sides with rub, to taste. Prepare grill for 500 F direct heat. For medium-rare, place steaks on grill 3-4 minutes. Flip and cook 2-3 minutes, or until 130-140 F internal temperature is reached. Rest 7-8 minutes before serving. Slice chilled blue cheese chive butter into 1/2-inch pieces and place on top of filets. 26 | WeAreProsper.com

Sweet Summer Treat that Beats the Heat

Crust:

Whether your family’s ideal summer day consists of swimming, hiking, biking or simply enjoying the sunshine, all that time in the heat calls for a sweet way to cool off. It’s hard to beat a homemade treat loaded with favorite summertime flavors that’s as cold and creamy as it is sweet and delicious.

8 graham crackers, crushed

When a summer weekend offers opportunities for morning kitchen lessons with the kiddos, they can help measure ingredients for Watermelon Ice Cream Bars and watch the magic happen as you mix up a watermelon curd, homemade crust, and whipped cream. Once your creation freezes completely throughout the day, turn out and cut into bars for a cold afternoon treat following all that fun in the sun.

While sweet and tasty, this dessert also provides a bite of hydration with the power of watermelon, which is 92% water for a delicious way to rehydrate. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, daily fluid intake is defined as the amount of water consumed from foods, plain drinking water and other beverages, meaning you don’t have to rely only on what you drink to meet your fluid needs. Because what you eat also provides a significant portion of daily fluids, fruits and vegetables like watermelon can help you and your family stay hydrated for whatever summer days bring your way. WATERMELON ICE CREAM BARS Watermelon Curd: 3/4 cup watermelon juice 2 tablespoons lime juice 1/2 cup honey 1 pinch salt 3 eggs, lightly beaten 1/2 cup butter (1 stick), cut into small cubes 28 | WeAreProsper.com

2 tablespoons honey 1 pinch salt 4 tablespoons butter, melted and cooled

Whipped Cream: 1 cup heavy whipping cream To make watermelon curd: In medium, heavy-bottomed saucepan, combine watermelon juice, lime juice, honey, and salt. Stir to combine then add eggs. Place pan over medium heat and cook, adding cubed butter to pan and stirring constantly, until mixture thickens and coats back of wooden spoon. Immediately remove from heat and carefully pour through fine mesh sieve. Cool completely in refrigerator. To make crust: Preheat oven to 350 F. In food processor, pulse graham crackers until rough crumbs form. Add honey, salt and melted butter; pulse until mixture resembles wet sand. Line 8-by-8-inch pan with parchment paper then press graham cracker mixture into bottom of pan in even layer. Bake crust about 10 minutes, or until just beginning to brown. Allow crust to cool completely. To make whipped cream: When crust and curd are completely cooled, in large bowl, whip cream until stiff peaks form. Gently push cream to one side of bowl and pour in watermelon curd. Using spatula, gently fold cream and watermelon curd together until no streaks are visible. Pour creamy watermelon mixture over graham cracker crust. Freeze dessert completely, 4-6 hours or overnight. When ready to serve, loosen sides with small spatula or butter knife. Turn out onto cutting board and use large spatula to flip so graham cracker crust is on bottom. Cut into eight bars and top each with basil leaf.

5 Tips to Stretch Your Summer Travel Budget Many of the nation’s leading travel experts are predicting a surge in travel this summer. It’s no surprise that after months of restrictions, Americans are ready to set out on their next adventures. While popular destinations are likely to be open and welcoming visitors, the uptick in traffic combined with higher prices may translate into more expensive travel. If you’re planning a trip this summer, learn how to incorporate some smart spending strategies with these tips from the financial experts at Credit One Bank: Be flexible on travel dates and destinations. Unless your travel is tied to a specific event or occasion, try searching with flexible dates to find the best available rates. Similarly, if you know you want to get away but you’re not particular about where, try looking for destinations offering special promotions or deals for travel during certain timeframes. Consider trip interruption and cancellation policies. Planning for the unexpected can help protect you if a trip needs to end early or be canceled altogether. Unless you have travel insurance, you’re likely to lose money on non-refundable expenses such as flights, event tickets or tours. However, some travel companies or your credit card provider may cover reimbursement for certain prepaid expenses. Look into what options are available before you travel to avoid extra headaches when the unexpected occurs during a trip. Get rewarded no matter how you travel. Using your credit card rewards to offset travel costs is a smart strategy, but not everyone wants 30 | WeAreProsper.com

or needs perks like miles or points that are exclusive to use with a single travel partner. With point-based travel reward cards, like the Credit One Bank Wander Card, the more places you visit, the more rewards you reap along the way that can be redeemed for future experiences, statement credits, gift cards and more. That means no matter what hotel chain you stay at, car rental agency you select or airline you fly with – or as you mix and match to get the best deals – everyday adventurers have opportunities to earn up to five times the rewards points for doing things they love. Come up with a realistic budget. When you’re planning a trip, it’s easy to focus on the big-ticket expenses like airfare and hotel rooms. The reality is, when you add up all the smaller expenses, you may spend significantly more than you realize. To plan a more accurate budget, be sure you account for expenses like dining out at restaurants, paying for fuel at the pump and tickets to attractions and events. Don’t forget fees that add up, too, like tips for housekeeping, checked bags, Wi-Fi access, parking and souvenirs. Research and book free and discounted attractions. Some attractions offer discounts for purchasing tickets in advance online, age-based discounts or free admission at certain times or dates, so be sure to look into any attractions you hope to visit ahead of time. If you’re a travel rewards credit card holder, start your search by looking into your redemption options. If your card offers flexible options by booking through a specific partner site or dedicated travel platform, you might be able to redeem points or make your spending dollars go further toward earning more rewards for the cost of experiences, entertainment and other expenses while you travel.
