CHASING FROZEN GIANTS The Insider’s Winter Guide to Letchworth State Park

5 | HEART OF THE GENESEE RIVER VALLEY

Letchworth State Park

Some people only associate Letchworth State Park with the summer months — the lush and verdant green forests surrounding a breathtaking gorge sliced through by roaring waterfalls. As dramatic and aweinspiring as these summer views can be, though, don’t assume they’re all that the “Grand Canyon of the East” has to offer. During the winter, Letchworth State Park takes on a different kind of majesty. Snow blankets the canyon. The air grows still and serene. The 600-foot dark stone cliffs rise above the icy white embankments. The tourist crowds of summer have departed, leaving you with a winter wonderland (even better, the park offers free admission in the winter months!). So, what are you waiting for? No winter trip to LivCo is complete without a visit to Letchworth State Park. Here’s what to do once you get there, where to easily enjoy the best views, and a few suggestions for ensuring you and your crew stay safe during your cold-weather explorations.

Great Letchworth Ice Volcano

The great letchworth Ice volcano If you do or see anything at Letchworth State Park during the winter months, make sure that you stop by the Great Letchworth Ice Volcano. This is the park’s absolute crown jewel winter attraction, a historic fountain that, once the temperature dips, transforms into a massive ice tower. You can find the fountain-turned-ice volcano adjacent to the Glen Iris Inn (worth a stop in its own right), about two miles from the park’s Castile entrance. The fountain was originally built in the 1800s, commissioned by William Pryor Letchworth. The gravityfed fountain pulls from higher elevation water sources and, as it continues functioning throughout the season, its spray begins freezing as soon as conditions are just right. The fountain’s spraying water freezes literally mid-air, creating, layer by layer, a massive, shifting cone of ice, climbing up to 20 or even 50 feet tall. The ice volcano can change appearance daily, all depending on the weather — making it a unique sight every time you visit. It’s no wonder that this seasonal feature, formed entirely by weather, with no human interference, has become a favorite with locals and travelers alike, who take to social media to share updates as to what the volcano looks like on any given day. Pro tip: The best time to see the ice volcano is typically during the coldest stretches of winter, often around February, after the area has experienced a good, long series of frigid days and nights.

Letchworth State Park

Winter navigation rules: The entrances and overlooks It’s worth noting that getting around Letchworth State Park in the winter can be a bit different from what you’d experience during the summer. Due to reduced visitation, traffic patterns shift, and some park entrances may not be open. Specifically, the Portageville and Mount Morris Dam entrances are closed or heavily restricted to vehicle traffic during this time of year. Use the Castile Entrance or Perry Entrance. The Castile route is the only reliable, year-round road that will lead you straight to the park’s main waterfalls, the visitor center, and the aforementioned ice volcano. Once you’ve entered the park, you can take in some of the best views at Inspiration Point, Middle Falls, and Upper Falls trail overlooks, all of which are relatively accessible. Still, even though a handful of gorgeous viewpoints are reachable, it’s important to keep safety in mind. Before heading out, check the Letchworth State Park website for any updates or closures related to your trip.

STAY WARM WHEN THE DAYLIGHT SHORTENS AND THE TEMPERATURE DROPS, the Genesee River Valley transforms into a winter wonderland. Yes, it’s cold. But with pristine woodlands and rolling hills, even the warmest blooded among us turns into a winter lover. Here, you’ll find an outdoor playground where adventurers can head off on skis, snowshoes, and sleds alike, just make sure to stay warm. Keeping warm on your outdoor winter adventures requires layering, proper gear, and planning to protect against the cold. Make sure to layer clothing (like fleece or down) to hold body heat, and wear a waterproof outer layer to shield from the elements. Spending time in the snow and the great outdoors is something you can look forward to this season each year. So hunker down – but don’t become a hermit. There’s plenty to do outside during the snowier months.

Letchworth State Park

Winter recreation and microspikes

Letchworth State Park

No matter how you prefer to play in the snow, chances are good that you can find an opportunity to do so at Letchworth State Park. Strap on your snowshoes and go for a quiet hike or grab your cross-country skis and glide through the forest. Keep your eyes peeled for winter wildlife. Even snowmobiling and tubing are options, across the park’s 60-plus miles of winter trails. Be sure to stay safe and stick to the dedicated paths for cross-country skiing and park-designated snowmobile areas. When visiting the tubing hill near the Trailside Lodge and the Humphrey Nature Center, bring your own tube. Additionally, if you plan on taking the Gorge Trail, even if just for a short portion to see the waterfalls, be mindful that the mists blowing off the falls can cause a thick sheet of ice to form on the stone steps and paths — even if ice isn’t in the weather forecast. It’s highly advised that visitors utilize a pair of microspikes or crampons for safe walking near the falls.

Chasing flavors + folklore Through the genesee river valley

Most folks with a time machine wouldn’t immediately

set the dial to the pre-1700s Genesee Valley. They’d probably assume there would be nothing here but “wilderness,” and you’d have to forage to survive. But they’d be missing out. Nobody talks about it, but this was already a well-known, abundant land centuries ago. Foraging was and remains a pleasurable activity that you can dabble in yourself.

Written by: Conrad Baker + Holly Watson Environmental Educator New York State Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation

It was hardly a “wilderness” even where the Genesee River slithers on muddy floodplains, glides through the green valley, and rumbles County Historian over Canyon Falls. The Onondowaga, or “Seneca” people of the Livingston County, New York Haudenosaunee, or historically, “Iroquois,” built permanent farm towns here, places with names like Canawagus, sulfur springs known as the “Place of Stinking Waters,” where a traditional footpath became wagon roads and later Routes 5 & 20, or Squawkie Hill, which gave refuge to displaced Great Lakes people, whose road became the north entrance to Letchworth State Park. At the Treaty at the Town of Big Tree, held near present-day Geneseo in 1797, the Seneca Nation ceded much of its original territory west of the Genesee River but reserved several parcels along the river that encompassed existing Native towns. Canawaugus, along Route 5, roughly translates to the “Place of Stinking Waters” because of the nearby sulfur springs. Big Tree, just across the river from Geneseo, took on the name of its leader. Little Beard’s Town was near today’s Cuylerville and is marked by the Torture

Tree, a massive oak symbolizing legends almost 250 years old. Squawkie Hill, located at the northern entrance of Letchworth State Park, was home to a group of Meskwaki, people displaced from the upper Midwest. An almost 18,000-acre area spanning the river gorge in Letchworth, from Silver Lake to Ridge in Mount Morris, was called Gardeau and is remembered as the home of Mary Jemison. Finally, Caneadea Reservation straddled the Genesee River from the mouth of Wiscoy Creek to present-day Houghton. Although these reservations were all dissolved by 1826, the Seneca Nation continues stewardship of several reservations in their original territory, including Cattaraugus and Allegany. To these Onondowaga, food came from generational cooperation with the soil and the elements. Every 4th grader can tell you the staples of the traditional Haudenosaunee diet are corn, beans, and squash. What sounds like three ingredients are actually hundreds. Consider the wide varieties of corn (including popcorn), the “beans” from clover all the way up to catalpa and locust trees, and squashes, maybe the most diverse of all, which include gourds, pumpkins, zucchini, cucumbers, and melons. Foraging or even hunting would have been supplemental to this mostly vegetarian diet, finding fats and flavors.

In any of your travels through this stunning forest landscape, even in the chilly autumn or the truly cozy winter, you will find colorful little shelf mushrooms sprouting out of every other downed log in the woods. It’s one of the most abundant local wild mushrooms and one of the most discussed entry-level foraging items. The mushroom grows year-round, always on rotting logs. It’s fuzzy, with multicolored growth rings on top, a leathery texture, smooth underside with no visible pores. Those are turkey tail mushrooms. Turkey tail mushrooms are the subject of viral and often disputed claims online. Some say even home remedies with no special equipment can cure diseases. This seems to generally not hold water. Only sophisticated lab equipment can extract certain compounds from these mushrooms, but they do make a great tea or broth.

make your make your own: own: TURKEY TAIL TEA To make one cup, you’ll need 2-3 fans of turkey tail mushrooms, bases trimmed off, and washed thoroughly in cold water. INSTRUCTIONS: Chop roughly and drop into 8oz water Simmer gently for about 30 minutes Strain and discard the mushroom To finish, stir in honey to taste

This tea can be endlessly customized by adding a squeeze of lemon, infusing other herbs, or including green or white tea leaves—other delicate flavors are best so you don’t overpower the light earthiness of the turkey tail.

For a bonus, you could sweeten your tea with local honey (which the Genesee River Valley is also known for). Stop by Cornerstone Farmstead in Caledonia for all kinds of authentic fruits of the valley, including honey. Like traditional indigenous peoples who first farmed here, foraging is a pleasure, not a necessity. Turkey tail is such an abundant flavor with no harmful lookalikes. It’s a great wild accent to cap any cozy season adventure.

VALLEY SPOOKY SEASONS + LEAPING STEEPLES There’s something magical about autumn in the Genesee River Valley. As the leaves begin to turn, the landscape takes on its signature palette of gold, amber, and russet, and the region’s villages, farms, and historic landscapes seem to come alive with a new kind of energy. Fall here isn’t simply a season to admire from the car window. It’s a season to participate — with celebrations, harvest festivals, handmade scarecrows, wagon rides, and enough Halloween thrills to keep even the most fearless visitors on their toes.

RAISE A STEIN TO THE START OF FALL The transition into autumn begins in late September when No BS Brew Company hosts their annual Oktoberfest. This celebration brings together the sights, sounds, and flavors of the traditional German festival along with live music performances. Visitors can dig into authentic German fare and compete in the high-stakes Stein Hoist competition.

DRESS UP FOR A DAY AT THE RACES As the season peaks, the action shifts to the sweeping pastures along Nations Road for the Genesee Valley Hunt Races. With more than a century of steeplechase lineage, this historic event is one of autumn’s signature occasions. Visitors can enjoy the spectacle of horse races and take part in one of the event’s most beloved traditions: the tailgate competition. Elaborate setups and creative spreads turn the spaces around the races into their own kind of competition.

For those looking to sample the flavors of the region, the New York Food and Wine Farmers’ Market offers another reason to linger. Regional artisanal cheeses, Finger Lakes wines, and craft spirits showcase the bounty of the surrounding area, making the Hunt Races an especially memorable way to spend a crisp autumn day.

CELEBRATE HARVEST SEASON WITH PUMPKINS AND SCARECROWS In Geneseo, the Scarecrow Festival transforms Main Street and Chestnut Street into an outdoor gallery of imaginative, handmade displays. The event culminates with a full celebration of food, drinks, and lively street music. A short drive away, the Lima Pumpkin Festival & Agriculture Day offers another take on autumn traditions at Mark Tubbs Memorial Park. Here, the focus turns squarely toward the region’s agricultural roots. Wagon rides make their way through the festivities as visitors explore local farm stands and admire the season’s biggest and brightest crops. Giant pumpkins and towering sunflowers go head-to-head for prize money, adding a little rivalry to the day’s harvest-season fun.

Grizzly’s Trail of Terror

GET YOUR HALLOWEEN THRILLS Of course, no fall itinerary would be complete without a little fright. Once darkness settles over the valley, some of Livingston County’s historic landscapes and wooded corners take on an entirely different personality. At Survive the Sanatorium: Haunted House, in Mount Morris, hosted by the Genesee Valley Council of the Arts, fright seekers can make their way through the dark, echoing corridors of a converted asylum, where local legends and unsettling surroundings create an immersive Halloween experience. For those who prefer their scares out in the woods, Grizzly’s Trail of Terror in Hunt delivers a different kind of adrenaline rush. Heavy low-lying fog, terrifying characters, and plenty of carefully timed jump scares turn the trail into a full-on Halloween challenge.

EMBRACING SLOW WELLNESS

Written by: Kailee Faulkner

Director of Client Relations

Native Wellness + Aesthetics Livingston County is one of the fortunate places where the four seasons show off their features vibrantly for all to see. As the trees start to bud in spring, the long exhale of winter concludes. Moving from monochromatic landscapes to technicolor is easily embraced. Summer takes us on a speed-dating whirlwind of movement, action, fresh air, and adventure. The lakes and lush forests breathe life and growth into the soul. The trees turn the landscape green to perfectly accent blue skies and sunny days. Labor Day Weekend becomes a reprieve, and it is looked at as a sort of finish line and a calendar marker for slowing down. The trees at this time show us the beauty in preparation.

Shifting from autumn to winter is embraced by its glowing days, crisp nights, and the harvests. The trees show off their brilliance of moving energy by giving us their leaves in golden yellows and radiant reds, which create pure art through the valleys. Trees prepare for winter by shedding their summer leaves and storing their energy in their roots. The most difficult season to accept for many is the stillness of winter. Winter takes patience and reflection, and it allows time to rest, restore, and reset. Transitioning gracefully into the shorter days and colder months can be more easily embraced by honoring five foundational pillars of seasonal mindfulness.

31 | HEART OF THE GENESEE RIVER VALLEY

1. SEASONAL WELLNESS +

MENTAL HEALTH

Swimming in lakes, hiking creek beds, cycling, or running through history via trails keeps our minds and bodies easily occupied and healthy through summer. As daylight shortens, so does our list of ways to keep our minds and bodies on track. The opportunity to keep the mind at ease and the body in check comes from a variety of local providers, coaches, and classes. Mental health services such as Livingston County Therapy Collective in Geneseo can connect residents to themselves and dedicated local care. Native Wellness + Aesthetics, in Lakeville, can assist in intentional clinical and holistic healthcare, from restoring summer skin damage to keeping the body and mind on track through winter with intentional time in the sauna and salt cave. Align + Define Pilates, in Geneseo, is a movement option that highlights the power of slow, relaxed flow. Classes are built for restoration and relaxation.

Native Wellness + Aesthetics

2. HEARTH + HOME Colder days allow for intentional time in the home. Preparing the home for the shift into winter involves creating an environment of warmth and comfort. Harvest season can showcase locally made goods by way of a festival. Events such as Autumn in the Village in Livonia and The Genesee Valley Vendors and Craft Fair in Mount Morris are the perfect opportunity to source goods that will transform a living space into a sanctuary. Surrounding ourselves with thoughtful, locally crafted elements allows our homes to become true havens during the quietest months of the year.

VISITLIVCO.COM | 32

3. NOURISHING BODY + SOUL Seasonal alignment is most deeply felt through what we consume. As the weather turns, our bodies naturally crave rich, grounding foods. Livingston County is abundant in local agriculture. This breeds quality choices at various roadside stands. Connect to the surrounding harvest by sourcing local ingredients such as freshly baked artisanal breads, preserved goods, winter root vegetables, and locally freeze-dried berries at places such as Bronson’s Berries in Avon or Valley View Farmstead in Dansville. Patron local cafes and restaurants such as Yard of Ale in Piffard for a break from routine, culinary inspiration, comfort, and community. The colder season creates an easy template to isolate. In-person interaction with friends or family over a thoughtful dinner can breathe life into the soul.

4. PAUSING WITH PAPER In an increasingly digital world, the act of slowing down, putting pen to paper, is an act of mindful rebellion. The fall and winter seasons encourage us to pause, reflect, and reestablish tangible connections. Taking a quiet afternoon to write a handwritten note, send a warm holiday greeting, or an unexpected "thinking of you" card creates a lasting keepsake for both the sender and the recipient. Unique stationery supplies can be found in local shops such as Dogwood Trading Company in Dansville, as well as other quaint downtowns around the county. Create something special for yourself or others. A tangible reminder of love and care can do wonders for the mind and soul.

5. CRAFT + CREATE Winter invites us to work with our hands and embrace creative expression. Engaging in tactile crafts, whether spinning yarn, knitting, or woodworking, anchors our attention in the moment. Visiting local staples like Spindle + Knots in Dansville to gather quality materials allows us to invest time in meaningful, handcrafted projects that bring warmth and purpose to long winter evenings. Find inspiration for projects at boutiques such as The Valley Shop in Nunda. Intentionally connect with neighbors or step into something completely new, like a class at Ironwood Studios in Springwater.

TWO WAYS TO SPEND A WEEKEND AT STORY ROAD SCANDINAVIAN CHALET

WINTER IS THE PERFECT TIME for a serious reset. Luckily, the Story Road Scandinavian Chalet in Dansville is ready and waiting to make your winter hygge retreat dreams come true.

Whatever your reason, when you’re craving a bit of time away from reality, far from the stressors of everyday life — and, ideally, with some of your favorite people by your side — experience the Danish concept of “hygge” and its cozy, comforting aesthetic without ever leaving the country. In LivCo, the Story Road Scandinavian Chalet has been lovingly designed to offer you a retreat that’s one part Scandinavian sleek architecture, one part creature comforts, and one part luxe amenities. Here, you’re ready to explore all the winter fun that LivCo has to offer. The woodsy chalet is surrounded by dense forest, the views of which you can admire thanks to the long expanses of windows filling the rooms with natural light. Stay warm while the snow falls outside, thanks to the heated

bathroom floors, sauna, and indoor pellet stove. Or brave the cold for a few minutes as you dash to the outdoor hot tub, which offers up stellar views of the night skies, thanks to the area’s lack of light pollution. The spacious kitchen is well-equipped for cooking up a delicious meal incorporating local products and winter produce, and the rec room is ideal for spending an evening laughing over who actually won that game of foosball. With space enough for nine guests, across the rental’s five beds and three baths, you won’t even need to make the difficult decision of who will have the honor of coming along for your getaway. To help make your planning easier once you’ve booked your stay, we’ve devised two classic LivCo winter weekend itineraries, both suited to anyone seeking a blend of relaxation and fun — though we have a feeling that the first is going to particularly appeal to those planning a guys’ getaway, while the second makes for a rejuvenating and intimate girls’ weekend.

THE SLATE & SLOPE ITINERARY THIS ITINERARY BLENDS HIGH-ENERGY WINTER RECREATION WITH PREMIUM RELAXATION, CRAFT POURS, AND SOME GOOD-NATURED COMPETITION.

DAY ONE SETTLE IN AT YOUR SCANDINAVIAN CHALET After you arrive at the Story Road Scandinavian Chalet, dump all your luggage, claim your beds, and grab your appetite. It’s time to chow down on some sizzling prime steaks and craft burgers, all washed down with New York beers at the nearby Scovill’s Grill, situated on the Brae Burn Golf Course grounds.

UNWIND BY THE FIRE After you’ve had your fill, stop by the Highway Cigar Shop and pick up some premium, hand-rolled cigars to indulge in back at the chalet, next to the outdoor pellet stove or while you’re in the hot tub. It’s the best way to kick off what’s sure to be an amazing weekend.

DAY TWO FUEL UP WITH A HEARTY BREAKFAST Drive into downtown Dansville for breakfast at Sugar Bowl. It’s a quaint spot where you can expect fresh coffee and espresso and homemade baked goods, plus affordably priced breakfast bites like the All-American burrito with its scrambled eggs, pepperjack cheese, sausage, bacon, ham, and home fries, and build-your-own breakfast sandwiches stacked with your choice of eggs, cheese, meat, and veggies.

Swain Ski Resort

SPEND THE MORNING CONQUERING THE ALPINE TRAILS Then, after a quick breakfast, take to the ski trails (cross your fingers for a powder day!) at Swain Ski Resort. Snag a day pass and explore Western New York’s oldest independent slopes as you traverse the 35 alpine trails and terrain park. Once you’ve had enough fun, return to the chalet for defrosting in the wood-lined, indoor sauna and getting ready for a night out and a somewhat unexpected activity.

TRADE THE SLOPES FOR A VIRTUAL ROUND OF GOLF You’re going to be challenging your traveling companions to a round of golf — or, at least as close as you can get to golfing during this time of year. You have two options. The private VIP golf simulator lounge at HD Sports Zone is the place to work on your swing while the snow falls. Or, you can book a bay at Way Right Golf in Geneseo and practice between rounds of drinks and watching whatever game is on TV at the moment as you dig into a pizza or pretzel.

START THE MORNING WITH A LITTLE RECOVERY TIME

END THE WEEKEND WITH PUB FARE AND A GAME

Just because Sunday is the last day of your trip, that doesn’t mean the fun has to end. Because you may’ve had a few more drinks than normal during your weekend getaway, spend Sunday morning recovering with the help of Native Wellness + Aesthetics. In Lakeville, this holistic, boutique wellness brand will have you feeling better than ever, thanks to the team’s nutrient-packed IV hydration and vitamin therapy drips and climate-controlled Himalayan salt cave.

Before you start home, cap off your trip with a stop at one of LivCo’s favorite spots for pub fare and catching the game or some spectacular live music.

Then, go on a leisurely, easy hike and soak in the fresh air with a visit to Stony Brook State Park or the Genesee Valley Greenway.

Swain Ski Resort

In Lima, Fanatics Pub is all about the wings and burgers, plus a lineup of top-tier blues acts. In Lakeville, Tee + Gee Bar and Grill is known for its low-key, no-frills atmosphere, pairing pub fare with cold beer. For a taproom vibe, opt for Solitude Brewing Company, also in Lakeville, where you’ll find a range of regional brews plus wings, wraps, sandwiches, smashburgers, and more.

TAKE IN THE CHALET’S SCANDINAVIAN STYLE After you’ve checked into the chalet and fully admired its Scandinavian architecture and high-end touches (the gorgeous tilework in the kitchen, the cozy sitting area focused around the fire and featuring green velvet-lined seating, and the plush bed with wake-up views of the pristine outdoors!), give yourself a moment to refresh before heading to dinner.

DAY ONE

SETTLE IN FOR HANDMADE COMFORT FOOD In Mount Morris, Questa Lasagna, a local top pick, awaits with its warm garlic bread and artisanal handmade Italian pasta. Pair the house-made pasta with a glass of imported Italian wine, or one of the fresh desserts with a cup of rich coffee.

CATCH A MOVIE BENEATH A HISTORIC MARQUEE Then, make your way on over to Star Theatre, Dansville’s historic, single-screen theater where you’ll catch the latest flick of your choice beneath the 1921 original woodwork and neon marquee (make sure to snap a photo for your socials!).

CHOOSE BETWEEN A LITTLE PAMPERING OR ACTIVE FUN After a hard morning working out your wallet, treat yourself to a facial, massage, body treatment, or other pampering service at Body + Face by Kristin in Geneseo.

Body + Face by Kristin

START THE MORNING WITH COFFEE Fuel a morning of shopping by first stopping at ReNewed Coffee Shop. The artisanal hot lattes and breakfast pastries (or, if you’re feeling healthy, an acai bowl) are just what the doctor ordered.

Prefer to treat your body by getting your blood pumping? Consider a crisp walk along the lake at Vitale Park or, if the weather’s too frigid, pick up an indoor bouldering pass from Sunrise Bouldering and try your hand at this unique activity.

WIND DOWN WITH BREWS AND BITES You’ll be feeling your best by the time you’re ready to taste-test a flight of brews at Rising Storm Brewing Co. (or sips of cider or wine, if that’s more your thing). Grab a bite from the menu featuring comforting favorites of sandwiches, burgers, and sides.

DAY TWO Spindle + Knots

EXPLORE LOCAL SHOPS AND HIDDEN GEMS Then, make your way through Dansville’s downtown, where you’ll find a handful of hyperlocal retailers, all serving up something different. Dogwood Trading Company has your specialty candles, puzzles, and regional gifts. For the thrifter, Second Season Marketplace specializes in upscale consignment apparel and primitive and antique home décor. Crafters will want to make tracks for Spindle + Knots and its luxury yarn collections, craft kits, and communal stitching tables.

Pure Body Day Spa

DAY THREE TREAT YOURSELVES TO A RELAXING MORNING Go out on an especially high note with a morning of pampering at Pure Body Day Spa in Avon, where you can book the signature Masques & Mimosas private party takeover. Your group will be treated to organic skin treatments and exclusive spa services, with mimosas adding a celebratory touch to your final morning together. Or make a visit to Cedar House Wellness in Geneseo. Cedar House offers private infrared saunas, cold plunges, red light therapy, and contrast sessions designed to help you recover, recharge, and feel your best. Come for the sweat, stay for the reset, and leave feeling better than when you walked in.

STEP INTO LIVINGSTON COUNTY’S PAST Once you’re feeling refreshed, spend some time exploring the past at the Livingston County Historical Society & Museum. Housed in an 1838 cobblestone schoolhouse, the museum offers a fascinating look at the area’s history through exhibits featuring historic textiles, agricultural artifacts, and the region’s salt-mining heritage.

GRAB A LAID-BACK LUNCH Before heading home, linger over a warming farewell lunch at the Big Tree Inn in Geneseo, where you can settle in beside the roaring fireplace and enjoy one last leisurely meal together. Then, gather your crew for a final photo beneath the historic marquee of the Avon Park Theater — a fitting final snapshot before everyone goes their separate ways. Letchworth State Park
