UNIVERSITY TRADITIONS The University mace is 37 inches long and weighs about eight pounds. It is made of sterling silver throughout and is partly gold-plated. The head consists of four vaulted arches, each displaying a gold-plated campus emblem.

The arches are joined by a drum that carries the inscription “LONG ISLAND UNIVERSITY 1926.” The drum is surmounted by a gold-plated lighthouse with four “lenses” to indicate that the University is located on an island. As a lighthouse beacon guides the seafarer through the sea in darkness, so the University provides the guiding light of knowledge out of the darkness of ignorance. On top of the lighthouse is the logo of the University: the map of Long Island in the colors of the rainbow rendered in champlevé enamels. Below the head of the mace, a short textured neck leads to the hammered shaft. At the lower end is a pear-shaped node into which is recessed the goldplated engraved seal of the University.

The president’s chain-of-office is about 48 inches long. It is made of sterling silver throughout. In the front are the goldplated emblems of the campuses in oval silver frames, each surmounted by a small lighthouse. The emblems alternate with links, each displaying the letters “LIU” between two sea shells. On the shoulders and in the back of the chain-of-

office, these links alternate with six gold-plated shields showing waves and, over them, an open book. In the front of the chain hangs the University medallion: Below an “umbrella” surmounted by a lighthouse can be seen the logo of the University, the enameled map of Long Island against a gold-plated background, surrounded by a wide silver frame engraved “Long Island University.”

The medallion of the chair of the Board of Trustees is identical to the medallion of the president’s chainof-office but is worn on a ribbon in the colors of the University.

The medallions of the campus chancellors are somewhat narrower than those of the chair and the president. They are worn on a ribbon and show the “umbrella” and the lighthouse. Below the “umbrella” is the inscription “Long Island University.” In the center is the gold-plated emblem of each campus and below is engraved the name of each campus. On Jan. 1, 2012, Long Island University was rebranded as LIU. The chain will be redesigned to reflect the new identity program.

The insignia were designed and created by Kurt J. Matzdorf, professor emeritus of gold and silversmithing, State University of New York, New Paltz, who is internationally known for his ceremonial silverwork.

DANIEL “RUDY” RUETTIGER

Defying all odds on a gridiron in South Bend, Indiana, Daniel “Rudy” Ruettiger carved his name into the history books as perhaps the most famous graduate of the University of Notre Dame. Rudy rose from the valleys of discouragement to the pinnacles of success. Following years of fierce determination to overcome innumerable obstacles and incessant criticism, Rudy achieved his lifelong dream — to attend Notre Dame and play football for the Fighting Irish. While the stadium chanted RU-DY, RU-DY, he sacked the quarterback in the last 27 seconds of the only play in the lone game of his college football career. Rudy’s teammates carried him off the field in celebration, making him the first player in school history to receive such an honor. In 1993, TRISTAR Productions immortalized his life story with the blockbuster film, RUDY. Today, Rudy is one of the most popular motivational speakers in the United States. He entertains international corporate audiences with a unique, passionate, and heartfelt style of communicating. He co-founded the Rudy Foundation in 1997, with the mission of strengthening communities by offering scholarships in education, sports and the performing arts.
