Environmental problems on the earth are gradually getting more and more serious. Climate change, deforestation, loss of biodiversity, air and water pollution pose significant threats to the planet and its inhabitants. Since Architecture plays a crucial role in addressing environmental problems, in this project, we made some attempts by designing a biotechnology center operated mainly by highly-intelligent drones in El Segundo, to help human solve more serious environmental problems in the far future.

UNIT AGGREGATION

This biotechnology center is located in EL Segundo which includes a residential area, an area full of light industry companies and an oil refinery that takes up a quarter of El Segundo. Situated in a district with strong industrial style, this biotechnology center thus combines biological and industrial architectural characteristics in its form. By inputting two groups of images: factories and forests, machines and cells, in an AI generator called StyleGan, we got outputs integrating the features of inputs. The ‘X’ patterns and the unit/cell aggregation of the outputs, inspired the form of the genetic modification wet labs in the east wing and outdoor floating gardens on the west.

CONCEPT AND MATERIAL SELECTION The biotechnology center is designed for the far future when the earth faces serious environmental problems like air pollution, water pollution and deforestation. Some regular plants that can’t survive on the polluted earth will be brought to the labs for genetic modification. The genetic change can transform plants into superplants, not only being able to thrive in the contaminated environment but also being stronger at purifying air and water. A majority of the super-plants will be dispersed all over the world. A minority of them will be planted in the floating gardens to develop the micro-climate around the site.

Because of the environmental improvement goal of this biotech center, we focused on selecting ecofriendly materials. Glazed terracotta was chosen as the cladding material not only due to its color(brown, yellow, orange, or grey) but more because of its multiple benefits: eco-friendly, light-weighted, easy to install and durable. Low-carbon concrete and wood were also chosen to lower the footprint.

PROGRAM AND STURCTURE The east wing is an artificial intelligence-operated wing, including dry labs for highly intelligent drones to do technical experiments and wet labs for plant genetic modification experiments. The central public parliament is where drones report experimental progress to humans and make decisions together. Exhibitions of the past biotechnological achievements in the central gallery tower are open to human from all over the world. Meanwhile, superplants in outdoor floating gardens are lasted achievements exhibited to people in a more natural way. People can walk on the walkways surrounding the building to enjoy the great micro-climate created by super-plants.

To leave more space on the ground level for landscape and human activities, the whole biotech center floats in the air. So cantilever and suspension structure systems are used in this biotech center. We chose two chunks from the East and West wing for detailed structural and tectonic design.

STEEL COMPRESSION RING

The main drainage pipe, misting pipe, irrigation pipe all get gardens from underground through space among 4 reinforced concrete columns.

Misting pipes will lower the temperature for each outdoor garden at noon in summer.

The compression ring will be pulled towards the center of the garden by the diagonal beams.

The diagonal beams will pull the tension ring against the center of the garden.

The 8 steel diagonal beams will provide tension to the garden. They and the truss cantilevers will work together to hold the garden in place.

Some of the genetically modified plants will be planted on the plant wall.

The wood benches supported by steel structures allow visitors to have a rest. The wood material can help reduce the carbon emission.

The terracotta panels will be mounted on them.

Each garden has 4 steel truss cantilevers that provide upward support to structures above.

The terracotta panels will be bolted on the steel truss frames by some T-shaped bolts.

Irrigation pipe will transport nutrients to the plants growing on the plant wall and in the soil.

INSULATED PREFABRICATED ALUMINUM FACADE BOXES One aluminum box is 8’ wide and 16’-24’ long, with some brown, yellow, or grey glazed terracotta panels bolted on

by T-shaped bolts.

GLAZED TERRACOTTA PANELS Terracotta is durable, sustainable, low-maintenance, and it can help lower buildings’ energy consumption.

STEEL PIPE MEMBERS (SECONDEARY STRUCTURE) Steel pipe members can support the subsurface steel ribs and connect with the super-grid 3D space truss members.

The wide-flange beam grid system is to support the steel decking.

Aluminum facade boxes are mounted on sub-surface steel ribs by steel brackets.

Also it's a wing with huge volume and weight. The steel 3D space truss occupying the whole interior space will support the East wing better than regular structure systems.

CASTED STEEL SUPER-GRID CENTER NODE Each 3D space truss member is bolted with a casted cap. 8 truss members with casted caps that converge to the same point are held together by a steel super-grid center node.

The whole primary structure system works as a cantilever transferring the load of the entire west lab wing to the reinforced concrete core in the center of the East lab wing to hold this wing in place.

CONCRETE FLOOR SLAB ON METAL DECK With the 3’’ deep cellular steel deck and the 2’’ thickness concrete floor, the fire-resisting rating can get to 3 hours.

LAVALIER Sculpture Museum on Bowery Street, New York, USA Academic Work Time: September, 2022 - December, 2022 Partner: Junyi Chen Tutor: Jenny Wu

This project is to design a sculpture gallery with office space, a souvenir shop, a café, and an outdoor garden as an extension of the new museum. Starting from AI images generated by Midjourney and DALL·E, a physical cube puzzle that can be assembled and disassembled without glue was designed and modeled.

The movement and elegant form of the puzzle pieces inspired the sculpture museum. This extensional museum ended up being a building responding to New York City’s characteristics, the Nolita district’s atmosphere and the grace of New Museum.

In the beginning, we used Midjourney and DALL·E: by entering some keywords like cube, geometry, seam, and copper, we got two elegant AI images, which helped us design the puzzle cube elevations. We picked the most special shape in the AI image and redesigned it, giving it an exquisite, elegant and sinuous shape and a crystal-like material, making this piece like a ‘jewel’ in our ’jewelry box’. JEWELRY BOX is the concept of our puzzle cube.

FIRE ESCAPE

CONCEPT

SITE PLAN

Our Museum is located on a street corner next to New Museum. We noticed that fire escape on old building facades is a distinctive element in NYC. Many old movies like West Side Story have some impressive shots taken on fire escapes, meaning that fire escapes could be places where interesting stories happen. People in the past sometimes used fire escapes as their little balconies - little urban open spaces. Also, the site is located next to Nolita, a cozy and slow-paced neighborhood with many open spaces along the streets. However, there are not many open spaces in New Museum. Since the cube’s central ‘jewel’ piece looks similar to a fire escape, we designed the jewelry piece as a central staircase that leads people to many open spaces in our building.

SHIFT + ALIGNMENT

We duplicated and rotated half of the cube, putting it on top of the original one. Then the top was pushed to one side, even beyond the boundary of the lower cube, so as to make our building shift following the shifts of the New Museum. We also slightly changed the length-width ratio of some pieces to make most pieces align with every level of the New Museum. Since our building is an extension of New Museum for sculpture exhibition, the shift and alignment are two ways our museum responded to New Museum.

The central copper staircase is a circulation space for leading people to every open space in our museum. But it not only leads people to some destinations, itself is a destination - the top surface of the central copper stair is a public space where people can sit and relax.

Since there’s no vegetation in New Museum, we designed an outdoor garden with two bridges connecting New Museum and our building to be shared by visitors in both museums.

Life is like a journey by train, during which rushing crowds get on and off at every stop. Some people join your life journey and go through meaningful things together. However, no matter how important they are, after some time, they will get off the train eventually. So there is no need to be overly sad about the departure or death of someone important. I designed this funeral space to comfort those suffering or having suffered the grief of losing precious people in their lives. Hopefully they will move on with their lives with hope rather than be immersed in sorrow forever.

SITE AND MEANING Humans come from nature and eventually return to nature. So I chose a natural environment with a lake and forest to be the site. In this project, the soul and the body of the dead will be purified by the water in the lake, then rest in peace in the soil of the forest forever; grieved hearts of family members and friends of the dead will be comforted by the site's peaceful atmosphere.

The forest symbolizes life; the lake represents the soul of the dead; two docks symbolize the start and end of the interaction between living people and the deceased.

While families and friends of the dead are paddling across the lake and through the farewell hall floating over it, their lives will be interacting with the deceased's soul. However, this process is short and will eventually end when people leave the lake via the dock, as the dead could only participate in their lives for a short time and then leave.

When people return to the forest, they will be calmer and move on with their own lives with hope, because they know anyone appears in one's life will leave one day, so just calmly accept their leaving and keep going on. In addition, the body of the dead will be buried in the forest, providing nutrients to plants - starting a new life cycle.

FUNERAL PROCESS A funeral will be held with a background of an entire forest and lake, instead of in a building.

People will gather at the gathering area in the forest, recalling past stories of the dead and praying for him (or her). After that, they will go to the dock to take boats, then paddle through the farewell hall to see the dead for the last time and mourn for him (or her).

At last, they will leave the lake via the dock on the other side, and the corpse will be buried in the forest after the funeral.

FAREWELL HALL SPACE Death is not horrible. The deceased owns eternal peace and purity. In the farewell hall, the dead will be kept in a transparent coffin underwater, being purified. A thin translucent fiberglass will get the dynamic reflections of the ripples, creating a poetic, tranquil and dreamlike atomosphere to provide living people for a little bit consolation.

STRUCTURE AND ANALYSIS The farewell hall comprises a concrete cube supported by steel columns and a translucent fiberglass hanging on the beams. Water ripples reflect light on the transluscent fiberglass. The concrete cube prevents people outside to see inside and creates a dark environment enabling people inside to see the dynamic and fascinating light and shadow.

This building locates at a street corner in New York City. It is an archives building integrates with exhibition spaces and a lecture hall, which intends to make it popular and have great educational value. The concept kaleidoscope - generates an atrium with a cool shape and is full of natural light. It is like a surprise hidden in this solid concrete building, attracting visitors and providing comfortable learning experience to people inside it.

Just as archives control what is and is not publicly viewable, the kaleidoscope is also something that controls human's eyes - the small hole at the end of the opaque tube is the only opening that allows one to see inside, evoking curiosity; the charming and changing patterns inside contrast with the plain exterior, drawing people's eyes like a surprise.

I cut off a corner of the building to create an entry, like the small hole on a kaleidoscope, which is the only opening where pedestrians can see inside. Like the prism in the kaleidoscope receives light to create beautiful patterns, the prism atrium in the middle brings natural light to the entire building. And, as people play with a kaleidoscope by rotating one end of the tube to make the patterns they see change, the bottom of the prism is rotated to add more variety to the form of the atrium. In the end, the atrium becomes a surprise hidden in the building like the patterns inside a kaleidoscope.

I studied the relationship between the location of most archives and galleries: archives are usually located underground or in the middle of the galleries and are not open to visitors, or the archive is a separate building next to a galley.

But I think archives have strong educational value and would be popular spaces if they were more open to the public and integrated with the exhibition space. So in this project, from level 4 to level 6, art conservation rooms behind glasses allow visitors to learn about the conservation process. Meanwhile, they can see artworks that have been restored displaying in the exhibition space. On level 7 and 8, there are public paperwork archive spaces and reading spaces. Underground, there are some private paperwork archives and there is a projection room that allows people to learn artistic knowledge via videos.

The lecture hall is a space integrated with exhibition, video projection and entertainment functions. Visitors can sit or lie on the stairs, watching the recorded lectures given by famous artists or scholars playing on the big screen hanging on the ceiling. The natural light coming from above and the big sculpture will attract people to the top of the stairs, from which they will see tree canopies outside and the big skylight on the building's roof.

Mulholland is the most important project I did during my internship at Zyme Studios in the summer of 2022.

When I was introduced to this project, the company already had a demo plan and a demo east elevation. I worked on this project by switching between Revit and Rhino: in Revit, I refined the hallway and staircase in the foyer, the north bedroom and the cinema room on the second floor, based on the demo plan; in Rhino, I remodeled the east elevation based on the demo elevation. I also used VRay to do exterior renderings for the presentation to clients.

The house is located in the Hollywood Hills of Los Angeles, very adjacent to the Hollywood sign.

The owners are a couple in their 50s who have lived in the house for many years. The husband is a landscape photographer. He wants to renovate this house, making it have the same flowing and fluent quality as the meandering mountain roads and rivers he photographed. Also, he would like the house to be more open to the fascinating natural view on the south and west of the house. In terms of practicality, this renovation is a good opportunity to fix the inconveniences brought by the house’s original design.

This traditional and tedious chimney meaninglessly becomes the highest point of the facade.

The convex shafts break the continuity of the facade. However, the clients like fluent-shaped buildings.

There is no fluent transition from the volume of the main body of the building to the volume of the garage, making the garage like a late addition.

MATERIAL STUDY

PLASTER Warm-colored plaster was chosen as the main material for interior and exterior walls to respond to the warm yellow soil on the mountain and bring a cozy vibe to the house. The rough texture of the plaster adds details and variations to the walls.

BEIGE BRICK Brick was chosen for the garage elevation instead of plaster to imply the functional change of the interior space - the garage is not a living space.

The beige brick is similar in color to the plaster walls, maintaining the color continuity of the facade.

WOOD Wood was chosen for mullions, interior floors and the deck, since the clients were landscape photographers and would like the house to include more natural elements. Also, lightcolored wood would make the house more relaxing and comfortable.

SOFTWARE SKILLS REVIT,ENSCAPE,VERAS AI Hotel Virtual Site Academic Work Time: In Progress Partners: Wanyu Chen, Jessica Ho, Wei-Chieh Wang, Diba Ghazia

This project is a software practice in a software elective class. We digitally modelled a hotel that includes facilities like cafe, gym, theater and indoor gardens.

Each team member built the digital model of one floor in Revit. Also we used Veras (an AI plug-in for Revit) to generate some exterior renders, in order to get insperations of the style and materials of this building.

In the end we made some renders and a video using Enscape to show the overall design.
