Walk the familiar path of Jesus’ passion and death by imagining it in intimate detail. Listen to its sounds, breathe its dust, experience its devastation and beauty—hearing all the while the vibrant, loving voice of Christ urging each of us to stay close. Meditations by Amy Ekeh and original art by Gabrielle Rowell guide us from station to station, helping us to stop and listen, to hear the voice of the suffering Christ and respond to his unceasing invitation: Come to me, all of you.
Amy Ekeh is the director of Little Rock Scripture Study and special content editor at Give Us This Day and Liturgical Press. She is the author of several books, including Lent: Season of Transformation, and is a contributor to The Bible Today and Give Us This Day.
Reading: My heart is in anguish within me, the terrors of death have fallen upon me. And I say, “O that I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and be at rest.” (Ps 55:4, 6)
Meditation: My body has begun to feel numb. I feel light and heavy at the same time. I can hear the shouting of the crowds and the soldiers, but the rest of the world feels distant. Am I still moving forward? I am not sure. I lift my eyes to the hills, from whence comes my help. My help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth. My legs give way. I fall. Come to me, all of you who fall again and again.
Lord Jesus Christ, we come to you, lifting our eyes to the hills, believing that God is our help, trusting that when Unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain. But if it dies, it bears much fruit.
(John 12:24)
Christ, and we praise you. Because by your holy cross, you have redeemed the world.
Twelfth Station
Jesus Dies upon the Cross
We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you. Because by your holy cross, you have redeemed the world.
Reading: When it was noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. At three o’clock Jesus cried out with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” Then Jesus gave a loud cry and breathed his last. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom.
(Mark 15:33-34, 37-38)
(All kneel for a short time.)
Meditation: I began to die in a garden. It was in the dirt of Gethsemane that I died first—died to the desire for more time, died to the desire for security, died to the cup of my own choosing. In the garden I died and was set free to do this—to die for the sake of love alone. My heart is like wax; it is melted within my breast. Every excruciating moment—my final cry, my last breath—is the laying down of my life, a decision I made in a garden.
Come to me, all of you who have decided to love.
Prayer: Lord Jesus Christ, we come to you, full of love and sorrow. May our own hearts melt like wax, so they may be pliable, so we may choose to love like you, so we may lay down our lives for others.
It is finished.

A Holy Hour Companion Prayer,
Scripture, Reflection, Ritual
The practice of spending an hour in quiet prayer, in Eucharistic adoration or otherwise, has been part of the Christian tradition for centuries. A Holy Hour Companion provides a starting point for this quiet time, offering a selection of prayers, Scripture, and spiritual writings. In addition to traditional prayers of the Church and prayers specifically for use during Eucharistic adoration, A Holy Hour Companion contains an assortment of the prayers of holy women and men, both time-honored and contemporary. A sample Order of Service for a Lay-Led Holy Hour provides everything needed to engage this prayer as individuals or in community.

Luke
22:17-20 — Take This and Share
Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and said, “Take this and share it among yourselves; for I tell you [that] from this time on I shall not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”Then he took the bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which will be given for you; do this in memory of me.” And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which will be shed for you.”

John 13:1-15 — Jesus Washes the Disciples’ Feet
62 A Holy
My God, I Am Yours (Venerable Catherine McAuley)
My God, I am yours for time and eternity. Teach me to cast myself entirely into the arms of your loving Providence with a lively, unlimited confidence in your compassionate, tender pity.
Before the feast of Passover, Jesus knew that his hour had come to pass from this world to the Father. He loved his own in the world and he loved them to the end. The devil had already induced Judas, son of Simon the Iscariot, to hand him over. So, during supper, fully aware that the Father had put everything into his power and that he had come from God and was returning to God, he rose from supper and took off his outer garments. He took a towel and tied it around his waist. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and dry them with the towel around his waist. He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Master, are you going to wash my feet?” Jesus answered and said to him, “What I am doing, you do not understand now, but you will understand later.” Peter said to him, “You will never wash my feet.” Jesus answered him, “Unless I wash you, you will have no inheritance
Grant, O merciful Redeemer, That whatever you ordain or permit may be acceptable to me. Take from my heart all painful anxiety; let nothing sadden me but sin, nothing delight me but the hope of coming to the possession of You my God and my all, in your everlasting kingdom. Amen.

Lord, Make Me an Instrument of Your Peace (Attributed to Saint Francis of Assisi)
V. Additional Scripture 63
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace: where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair; hope; where there is darkness, light; and where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Pope Francis on Eucharist
100 Daily Meditations for Adoration, Prayer, and Reflection
Pope Francis; Foreword by Cardinal Blase J. Cupich
Eucharist is the center of our Christian life, for it forms us into who and whose we are called to be. Pope Francis on Eucharist is a collection of writings, homilies, and talks from Pope Francis, sharing a Eucharistic vision for the church where all are fed and sustained by the Body of Christ. These words from Pope Francis encourage and challenge all of us—nourished by the Eucharist—to be Christ for others.

Day 1
The Eucharist communicates the Lord’s love for us: a love so great that it nourishes us with Himself; a freely given love, always available to every person who hungers and needs to regenerate his own strength. To live the experience of faith means to allow oneself to be nourished by the Lord and to build one’s own existence not with material goods but with the reality that does not perish: the gifts of God, his Word and his Body.
[W]e don’t ever thank [the] Lord enough for the gift he has given us in the Eucharist! It is a very great gift and that is why it is so important to go to Mass on Sunday. Go to Mass not just to pray, but to receive Communion, the bread that is the Body of Jesus Christ who saves us, forgives us, unites us to the Father. It is a beautiful thing to do! And we go to Mass every Sunday because that is the day of the resurrection of the Lord. That is why Sunday is so important to us. And in this Eucharist we feel this belonging to the Church, to the People of God, to the Body of God, to Jesus Christ. We will never completely grasp the value and the richness of it. Let us ask him then that this Sacrament continue to keep his presence alive in the Church and to shape our community in charity and communion, according to the Father’s heart.
(General Audience – February 5, 2014)
“These meditations from Pope Francis are not only invitations to personal prayer but reveal something about the Eucharistic vision of the Holy Father and therefore the whole Catholic church. I can think of few better resources for renewing a Eucharistic attitude in the church than these meditations of Pope Francis.”
Timothy P. O’Malley, PhD Notre Dame Center for Liturgy
(Homily – June 19, 2014)
Day 56
We are a community nourished by the body and blood of Christ. Communion with the body of Christ is an effective sign of unity, of communion, of sharing. One cannot participate in the Eucharist without committing oneself to mutual fraternity, which is sincere. But the Lord knows well that our human strength alone is not enough for this. On the contrary, He knows that among His disciples there will always be the temptation of rivalry, envy, prejudice, division. . . . We are all aware of these things. For this reason too He left us the Sacrament of His real, tangible and permanent Presence, so that, in remaining united to him, we may always receive the gift of fraternal love. “Abide in my love” (Jn 15:9), Jesus said; and this is possible thanks to the Eucharist. To abide in friendship, in love.

Be Renewed
A Guide to the Sacrament of Reconciliation
Paul Turner
In this commentary on the revised English translation of The Order of Penance, Paul Turner explains in detail how the sacrament of renewal has itself undergone renewal since the first edition approved shortly after the Second Vatican Council. Turner highlights important elements within the revised translation including: the history behind the revised order of service and the words of absolution; an explanation of how and why the ceremony was revised after the Council; changes for communal reconciliation services; and the first translation of proposed examinations of conscience to prepare a community for reconciliation.
This commentary invites all Catholics to consider the sacrament anew by preparing a spiritual path upon which the faithful may walk in search of forgiveness and experience a profound encounter with the mercy of God.
“Fr. Paul Turner’s Be Renewed is an essential resource for all who work in pastoral ministry. Practical, informative, and engaging, this book provides the detailed and gentle guidance needed to celebrate the sacrament well.”
Matthew Reichert,
Director of the Center for Learning, Oregon Catholic Press
“Once again Father Paul Turner has expertly blended fine scholarship with keen pastoral skill. Be Renewed offers much understanding, insight, and encouragement to those approaching the sacrament ‘from either side of the screen.’”
Rt. Rev. Kurt Stasiak, OSB, Archabbot of Saint Meinrad Archabbey
“Be Renewed offers more than a one-time experience of this sacrament. This presentation of the extended history shows the efforts through the ages to make this an opportunity of spiritual and personal change, growth, and renewal. It is an excellent resource for faith formation for all age groups in the Church.”
Sister Lois Paha, OP, DMin Director of Formation and Liturgy for the Diocese of Tucson

Pastoral Guide to Pope Francis’s Desiderio Desideravi
Rita Ferrone
In this commentary on Pope Francis’s letter on liturgical formation, Desiderio desideravi, Rita Ferrone takes readers on a journey of discovery to the very heart of the mystery we celebrate in the liturgy. Along the way, it draws attention to particular elements readers might otherwise miss, and illuminates the many rich expressions and affirmations contained within the Pope’s letter. Questions for reflection and discussion are provided at the end of each section, making this commentary a useful tool for both personal reflection and group discussion.
“A clear, helpful, and pastoral guide to one of Pope Francis’s most important documents, by one of the world’s leading experts in the liturgy—and, as an added benefit, a great writer!”
James Martin, SJ, author of In all Seasons for All Reasons
“This pastoral guide to the Apostolic Letter Desiderio desideravi offers a limpid and empathetic reading of the text, providing the reader with an introduction to the theological meaning of the liturgy as the language and experience of every baptized person. A valuable tool for that ‘liturgical formation’ that Desiderio desideravi poses as an urgent pastoral task for the whole Church.”

Fed by the Lord
At-Home Scriptural Formation to Prepare Children for First Communion
Leonard J. DeLorenzo
God feeds his people in the most personal and intimate way. When we receive the Eucharist, we are being fed by God and changed in mind and heart by this most wondrous gift. Fed by the Lord provides at-home scriptural formation for children preparing for First Communion. This resource, written for the adults who guide them, nourishes relationships between children and parents as well as the Lord who feeds them. Fed by the Lord focuses on twelve stories of God feeding his people. By studying together the actions of God in Scripture adults can prepare children to connect with the Word of God—Jesus Christ—who reveals himself through this biblical journey and comes to us personally in the Eucharist.
“Fed by the Lord is an indispensable guide for parents, caregivers, and educators seeking to ground sacramental preparation in the heart of Scripture. Combining rich exegesis with sensitively calibrated teaching guides, this much-needed book forms parents for the vital but often intimidating task of inviting children into eucharistic encounter with the God who nourishes and sustains us.”
Susan Bigelow Reynolds
Candler School of Theology
EmoryUniversity
“Fed by the Lord is a beautiful way for parents to prepare their children to receive Jesus in the Eucharist. This book illuminates the generous nature of God and his enduring faithfulness. Leonard DeLorenzo guides parents into an emotionally stirring meditation on each passage of Scripture that allows them to convey the wonder and power of each narrative to their children in dialogical, engaging ways.”

Counting the Cost Financial Decision-Making, Discipleship, and Christian Living
Clemens Sedmak and Kelli Reagan Hickey
In Counting the Cost, Clemens Sedmak and Kelli Reagan Hickey suggest a theological and spiritual discernment process for the everyday reality of budgeting and financial planning that explores the status of money and monetary values by reflecting on this gospel call.
Counting the Cost explains how Catholic Social Teaching provides a framework for our thinking around finances by answering questions such as: What does this fundamental decision look like in times of financial scarcity and stewardship responsibilities? How do the attitudes that Jesus invites us into shape the ways we make financial decisions? And how can budgeting be and become a way of discipleship for individuals, parishes, and dioceses? The book includes a range of financial decision-making examples and reconstructs them as decisions about priorities, values, and commitments to respond to the world and its material realities in a gospel-inspired way.

He restores a contemplative dimension to evangelization that is often overlooked—those moments when, as he phrases it gracefully, ‘Even our silence can evangelize.’”
Michael Centore, editor of Today’s American Catholic
Michael J. Sanem lives in Kansas City with his wife and three sons. A former Bernardin Scholar at Catholic Theological Union, he is the author of Your Church Wants to Hear from You: What Is the Synod on Synodality? and works in evangelization ministry at the Church of the Nativity in Leawood, Kansas. Racism and Structural Sin
Confronting Injustice with the Eyes of Faith
Conor M. Kelly
Foreword by Carolyn Y. Woo
As a people of faith inspired by the belief that every human person is created in the image and likeness of God, Catholics have a responsibility to be champions for racial justice. Racism and Structural Sin invites readers to not only confront racism on a personal level but also to examine the root causes and perpetuated structures of this sin. Grounded in church teaching and pastoral practice, this book is a resource for Catholics—especially White Catholics—looking to wrestle with the challenges of race in the United States today through the eyes of their faith.
“Although racism impacts us profoundly, it remains a sensitive and polarizing topic that is difficult to broach in many faith communities. Conor Kelly provides an opening. Racism and Structural Sin is both nuanced and accessible, useful for faith formation as well the seminary, undergraduate, and high school classroom.”
Joseph S. Flipper University of Dayton
“Conor M. Kelly’s book stands out for clarity, simplicity, and accessibility; and it remarkably engages our daily experiences on racial inequality in America. This is the book for instruction and faith formation.”

Scripture Reflections for the Hard Days of Early Motherhood
Jessica Mannen Kimmet
In Groaning in Labor, Growing in Hope, Jessica Mannen Kimmet, a mom of three, offers a collection of Scripture readings and reflections that speak to the challenges of transitioning to motherhood. Kimmet shares her experience of postpartum depression and raising young children, and how Scripture and prayer helped her to reframe painful experiences and offer companionship in struggle. By taking whatever scraps of time that can be spared, Kimmet hopes readers will find a healing God present in the upheavals of this season of life, and to return to prayer even though that practice will look and feel different. This resource includes lectio divina for moms, Scripture references for overwhelming times, a litany of Saints for postpartum struggles, and more.
“I was barely through the introduction and I just kept thinking, I love her voice! Kimmet writes in a deeply authentic and vulnerable way that somehow manages to be simultaneously conversational and not overwhelming. It will definitely be my go-to gift for ‘newborn moms.’”

The Most Important Words of Jesus
Gerhard Lohfink, Translated by Linda M. Maloney
What Jesus taught through his preaching made an unforgettable impression upon his disciples. But it was the many succinctly formulated sayings of Jesus that stood out from the start because of their clear structure and vividness. In The Most Important Words of Jesus, renowned scholar Gerhard Lohfink focuses on the power, beauty, and seriousness of these seventy central sayings of the Lord.
When the Church confesses that Jesus is not only truly human but also truly God, that means he is the perfect image of God, God’s definitive word. It rests on the majestic claim that revealed itself, modestly, discreetly, and yet clearly, in every one of the seventy “sayings” or logia of Jesus. In this book, Lohfink helps us to understand what Jesus is talking about in these sharply defined words.

“Those familiar with Lohfink’s writings will not be disappointed. Those who have not read his works will be amazed. This is a sure resource for those who preach the gospel and for those who seek to be nourished by it.”
Frank J. Matera, Professor Emeritus, The Catholic University of America
“Lohfink always impresses with the detailed care with which he delves into significant biblical texts. This extensive probe into seventy major ‘words’ of Jesus in the synoptic gospels will keep the reader thinking but also praying for a good long time. If we take up or renew our acceptance of Jesus’ daily invitation, ‘Come, follow me,’ Lohfink spells out the consequences with a most satisfying blend of theological depth and spiritual wisdom.”

Reforming the Church Global Perspectives
Edited by Declan Marmion and Salvador Ryan
Epilogue by Kristin Colberg
Some are calling the Synod on Synodality “the greatest consultation effort in human history” and for good reason. It is no small task to listen to the world’s 1.36 billion Catholics, especially when many Catholics have felt marginalized or unwelcome. Taking a cue from this ongoing synodal process, the experts gathered for Reforming the Church: Global Perspectives place the broader issues relating to church reform in their historical context, while exploring themes that have ongoing relevance to the universal church. Topics include ecclesial transfiguration and the episcopacy, clerical sex abuse, globalization of the church, and the theology of synodality. A number of chapters address issues of more local, or culturally-specific, significance, in this way mirroring the results of synodal consultations conducted worldwide. What emerges is a reflection on the theme of reform within the Church: what it has meant in the past, what it means for us now; and what it might mean in the future.

Simple Psalter for Year B
The Gregorian Melody
The Expressive Power of the Word
Alberto Turco; Translated by Stephen Concordia, OSB
Foreword by Anthony Ruff, OSB
Michael Joncas’s new Simple Psalter is an attempt to synthesize elements of previous styles of psalm-singing into a new pattern of engaging these sacred texts. Using the new Abbey Psalms and Canticles, Joncas sets every responsorial psalm in the three-year Lectionary in settings that work equally well a cappella or with keyboard accompaniment, using psalm tones notated in proposed speech-rhythm. The Simple Psalter is divided into four volumes: one for solemnities, feasts, and other celebrations, and one each for years A, B, and C.

Praying the Psalms in the Voice of Christ
A Christological Reading of the Psalms in the Liturgy of the Hours
Frank J. Matera
Incarnate in Word and Song
Exploring Music in Liturgy and Life
Orin E. Johnson
“This excellent book offers its readers a clear path to reading, understanding and praying the Psalms, in connection with the practice of Christians since the first century. Fr. Matera has created a clear and eloquent companion to the book that joins both testaments and allows its readers to encounter Christ, both foreshadowed and present, with the continuous practice of the church.”
Robin Darling Young, The Catholic University of America
“Matera shares here a Christian way of praying the psalms, rooted in the ways that New Testament and patristic authors did the same. It is a rich guide, psalm by psalm, in the order that they occur in the Liturgy of the Hours.”
Abbot Jeremy Driscoll, OSB
Abbot of Mount Angel Abbey
“Orin Johnson combines serious scholarship with the practical wisdom of thirty years in music ministry to highlight a topic that has long needed greater attention: the right relationship of the liturgical rite, music, and preaching. This accessible yet substantive book will help start an important conversation among the various liturgical ministries in worshiping communities.”
Ann M. Garrido, Associate Professor of Homiletics, Aquinas Institute ofTheology
“This book serves as a poignant reminder of the need for presiders, preachers, and other parish ministers to work in concert with one another to help our assemblies raise their hearts and voices to the Lord.”
Nathan P. Chase, Aquinas Institute of Theology, St. Louis, Missouri
Orin E. Johnson has held professional music and liturgy positions for twenty-five years, currently at St. Margaret of Scotland Catholic Church in St. Louis, Missouri. He holds degrees in music and theology from Harvard University, Radford University, and Aquinas Institute of Theology. His liturgical music is published with OCP and GIA, and he is a contributor to Living Liturgy,™ published by Liturgical Press.

Compelling and honest biographies of heroes of faith, perfect for your parish reading group!
Dear friends of Liturgical Press,
Grace and peace to you! It’s an exciting time here at Little Rock Scripture Study as we prepare to celebrate “50 years of Catholic Bible Study” in 2024.
Little Rock Scripture Study began in 1974 in the hearts (and garage!) of Fred and Tammy Woell of Little Rock, Arkansas—in partnership with Jerome Kodell, OSB, and other lay men and women who dreamed of providing reliable Catholic Bible study in their diocese. In partnership with the Diocese of Little Rock, and soon thereafter with Liturgical Press, LRSS has grown into an international Bible study program with a reputation for informative and transformative Catholic Bible Study.
Now fully in-house at Liturgical Press, Little Rock Scripture Study continues to grow, offering you trusted, award-winning studies on relevant biblical topics.
Does your parish offer a Bible study program? Are you interested in expanding your current offerings for adults in your parish? We hope you’ll take a look at what we have to offer. And you’ll find even more options at littlerockscripture.org.
I’m just a phone call or an email away. It would be my pleasure to help you choose a Bible study that’s just right for your parish community.

The rosary has long held a central place in the prayer lives of Catholics. At the heart of this popular form of prayer is an invitation to focus our minds and hearts on the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, Son of God and Son of Mary. Through an illuminating analysis of all the relevant biblical texts, Scripture and the Rosary provides a trustworthy guide for deepening our understanding and appreciation of key events in the lives of Jesus and Mary, reflected in each set of mysteries: Joyful, Luminous, Sorrowful, and Glorious. Commentary, study and reflection questions, prayers, and access to online lectures are included. 4 lessons.

The Holy Spirit in the Bible Angels in the
Christian belief in the Holy Spirit as the Third Person of the Trinity was not officially defined by the church until the fourth century. But centuries earlier, the Hebrew Scriptures and the New Testament were already describing the action and presence of God’s Spirit. In The Holy Spirit in the Bible, George Smiga unpacks key Scripture passages, exploring the activity of the Spirit at creation, within Israel, in the ministry of Jesus and the early church, and at the end of time. The role of the Holy Spirit in our personal and spiritual lives is also explored. 6 lessons.

Bible
The Bible is full of passages in which angelic beings are sent to accomplish God’s will. Angels speak for God, direct the course of nations, and protect God’s people. They worship God and deliver God’s judgment. In Angels in the Bible, George Smiga examines some of the Bible’s most fascinating passages about angels, exploring their ministry on God’s behalf and drawing insights for our own spiritual lives. Because angels are mediators of God’s presence and action, studying angels is studying God. 6 lessons.

Jesus’ washing the feet of his disciples is a profound action proclaimed and typically ritualized every Holy Thursday during the Mass of the Lord’s Supper to emphasize the nature of true service and ministry to others. describesPreviously, wetooknoteofthefactthatJohn the Last Supper as occurring before the Passover, unlike the Synoptic Gospels, which all indicate that the Last Supper was a Passover meal. Another difference (in some respects, there are more differences between John and the Synoptic Gospels than there are similarities) is that it is only in John that we learn Jesus’ ministry spanned three years. As we go through John 6 (below) it should become evident that John’s concern forrevealingtheEucharistasagiftthatfillsus with life—eternal life in Christ—was better ofexpressedinadiscoursefollowingthefeeding the multitude than during the Last Supper. This is true in part because John’s eucharistic theology does not focus on Jesus’ passion so much as on Jesus’ resurrection. In John, Jesus’ death is the moment of his triumph, the moment where he is “raised up,” that is, exalted and revealed as king (12:32-33). In John, thepoweroftheresurrectionisalreadyevidentin Jesus’ crucifixion, and so the body of Christ that is given to us in the eucharistic bread brings eternal life to us. Another plausible reason for John not to include the institution of the Eucharist during the Last Supper is that by the time the Gospel of John was compiled, toward the end of the first century, the celebration of Eucharist was already a matter many Christian communities soughttokeepadeeplysacred, privatematter.
The Eucharist in Scripture
Clifford M. Yeary with Little Rock Scripture Study Staff
The Eucharist in Scripture explores the biblical theme of meals shared in faithful fellowship and in covenant relationship with God. Old Testament meals and promises provide a foundation for gospel meals with Jesus, culminating in the Last Supper as it is understood throughout the New Testament. Jesus’ Bread of Life discourse and the early Church’s practice of “breaking bread” are also explored. 5 lessons.

A Significant Milestone in the History of Feminism and the Study of Scripture
Wisdom Commentary series is available digitally through Logos Bible Software
All books are hardcover with dust jacket, 6 x 9.
isdom Commentary brings together today’s best scholars to provide modern readers with a truly fresh look at every book of the Bible. While issues of gender are primary in this project, the volumes also address the intersecting issues of power, authority, ethnicity, race, class, and religious belief and practice.
Each volume incorporates diverse voices and differing interpretation from various parts of the world, showing the importance of social location in the process of interpretation and that there is no single definitive feminist interpretation of a text.
