Dear Friends,

For almost twenty years as a parish and diocesan minister in Ohio, Illinois, Ontario, and upstate New York, I have relied on the resources of Liturgical Press which, inspired by the vision of its founder, Father Virgil Michel, OSB, integrate full participation in liturgy and church life, lived spirituality, and transformative justice in the world.

Having long used Liturgical Press resources to accompany parishioners of various faith styles, and authored two books myself, this past January I joined Liturgical Press as Editor of Pastoral and Parish Resources. I am deeply honored to be participating in this great legacy, rooted in Benedictine values and in service to a richly diverse Church.

You will see that legacy in our fall resources, and the new possibilities they open for your parish ministry. With the release of two new ritual books (pages 5-7), we are pleased to publish essential resources on Christian initiation and eucharistic spirituality to accompany our beautiful ritual books themselves. These include portable study editions and special pricing for initiation teams, an important new commentary from Paul Turner Eucharistic Reservation, (page 4), a revision of our popular and handy Communion of the Sick (page 4), Paula Huston’s reflective and accessible One Ordinary Sunday (page 8) and, of course, our classic Living LiturgyTM and seasonal reflection books (pages 10-13).

Likewise, continuing Virgil Michel’s legacy of supporting lived spirituality for all the baptized in our complicated world, don’t miss Maureen K. Day’s groundbreaking Cultural Catholics: Who They Are, How to Respond (page 9) or our new resources for navigating faith and technology, the ecological crisis, peace and justice, and more.

God bless you in your ministry with all God’s people,

New Commentary Guide

Holy Communion and Worship of the Eucharistic Mystery outside Mass

Paul Turner

In eucharistic adoration, the faithful spend time in the presence of Christ, who in turn is present to them. In communion services, the faithful unable to participate in the sacrifice of the Mass can still receive its fruit. In Eucharistic Reservation, Paul Turner explains the new translation of these guidelines and refreshes all those who find delight in the eucharistic presence of Christ even when Mass is over. 979-8-4008-0089-4 Paperback, 192 pp., 5½ x 8½, $24.95 eBook also available

National Endowment of the Arts Fellow Paula Huston is a longtime oblate of New Camaldoli Hermitage. The author of two novels and eight works of spiritual nonfiction, including The Hermits of Big Sur, published by Liturgical Press, she lives with her husband Mike on four acres eighty miles south of Big Sur.

One Ordinary Sunday

A Meditation on the Mystery of the Mass Paula Huston

For Catholics, the Mass is the “source and summit of the Christian life,” as the documents of the Church put it. Yet many Catholics might confess to not understand in any depth what goes on in a typical celebration of the Eucharist. In One Ordinary Sunday Paula Huston guides us through a Mass at her home parish in a rural California town. Huston’s personal and spiritual reflections offer fresh and often unexpected insights into the profound mystery at the heart of the Catholic faith.

“This is one of the most beautiful, profound books on Christian faith I have ever read. Paula Huston’s honest and at times painfully vulnerable meditation on her own unfolding faith journey becomes a powerful guide to the meaning of prayer. ”

Douglas E. Christie, PhD

“It would be hard to imagine an easier and more attractive introduction to the Eucharist. Highly recommended.”

Jerome Kodell, OSB

Subiaco Abbey

“Part meditation. Part testimony. Part catechesis. Paula Huston reminds us that at each Sunday at Mass, and at every Eucharistic celebration, our personal and communal stories are seamlessly intertwined with the story of Jesus and the stories of the many who have believed in him throughout history. Truly inspiring.”

Hosffman Ospino, PhD Boston College, Clough School of Theology and Ministry

Cultural Catholics

Who They Are, How to Respond

Who are “cultural Catholics” and how do we connect with them? Cultural Catholics tells the story of those who consider themselves Catholic, but infrequently attend Mass. This accessible book examines cultural Catholics on a range of topics, allowing readers to come to a better understanding of this group, and offers ministerial insights for connecting with and accompanying them on their spiritual journeys.

Everyday Annunciations

On Learning to Say Yes

How are we to understand the surprises life brings, the events and upsets that challenge what we believe about ourselves and our purpose? In Everyday Annunciations, Susan Swetnam encourages readers to imagine how their own upheavals might function as “everyday annunciations”—invitations to partner creatively with God in new ways.

“Susan Swetnam enters a labyrinth of grieving when she’s widowed at fifty-four, and through her skillful writing brings the reader along every step of the way. This intensely personal experience offers hope to many who endure incalculable loss. After twenty years, tragedy turns to treasure and desert to garden. Lucky the reader who gets to come along for the transformation.”

“Susan Swetnam helps us be on the lookout for the tiny Annunciations that punctuate—and occasionally puncture—our lives. Stepping into paintings of the Annunciation, she gives us ways to explore our own reactions and emotions when we find ourselves facing a call to change course in unexpected ways.”

Speak Lord, Your Servant

Reflections on Faithful Communication in a Digital Age

Daniella Zsupan-Jerome

Communicating faith is about living it, and sharing it with others, in word, and witness of life. These days, many people find themselves navigating the joys and struggles of life through screens and scrolling digital devices. As pilgrims on the journey, we are called to be intentional about how we share our stories and may wonder how our presence in digital spaces invites faithfulness. How can we communicate authentically as we encounter one another online? In Speak, Lord, Your Servant Is Listening, Daniella Zsupan-Jerome invites readers on a retreat—rooted in the Benedictine tradition—that promotes a spirituality of communication built on listening, engagement with the Word, and hospitality to others.

Gifts from Friends We Never Wanted

Biblical Journeys of Grace

Virginia Herbers

Unwelcome guests are not generally greeted with gratitude but occasionally they become unexpected friends bearing gifts we never would have asked for. Following the same pattern as her first book, Gifts from Friends We’ve Yet to Meet, Herbers chooses a gospel character to accompany us as we engage these uninvited “friends.” Weaving together the stories of Jesus’s contemporaries, his response to their foibles, and stories from her own experiences, Herbers invites us to join her on a journey of discovery, vulnerability, honesty—and hospitality.

“This book is a warm conversation with a wise friend who helps us notice in the Gospels, our own lives, and everyday challenges, how much the gifts of love and grace abound.”

The Stones of the Last Week

Impediments

to Easter

When Jesus descends the Mount of Olives into Jerusalem to the acclamation of the crowd, he announces “I tell you, if these were silent, the stones would shout out.”

In The Stones of the Last Week, Bonnie B. Thurston reflects on the Passion narratives in Luke 19-24, and explores the many references to stones, both literal and spiritual, that impeded Jesus’s last week with a view to their significance for our own journey to the fullness of life that resurrection offers.

Counting the Cost

Virtue in Virtual Spaces

Catholic Social Teaching and Technology

Louisa Conwill, Megan Levis, and Walter Scheirer

At its best, the internet channels the world into a global village of sorts, where digital citizens learn from each other, explore new modes of creation, and help others work through dilemmas in both physical and virtual spaces. Virtue in Virtual Spaces argues that the internet doesn’t have to be the cultural wasteland of click-bait, partisan politics, and vulgar content that we see too often today. In this book, readers will engage with the philosophies behind their favorite social media platforms, examine how the design features in these platforms shape habits and imagination, and gain dialogue-based skills to bring virtue back into virtual spaces.
