Fall 2023 | litpress.org
The Synod in Rome this fall will be unlike any other, both in its membership, organization, and themes for discussion. Modern synods have so far consisted of bishops and a few invited specialists, thus emphasizing the hierarchical and teaching nature of the Church. Calling for a wider representation this fall is, among other things, an acknowledgment of the desire to truly listen to the Spirit speaking in and to the whole Church. It is also a nod to the Church’s notion of its own nature and mission having been in a continual development since the beginning, all within the living tradition of the People of God journeying as—and listening to—a community of shared participation and co-responsibility.
As an apostolate of Saint John’s Abbey, we at Liturgical Press recognize and receive these themes of community, shared participation, and co-responsibility as nothing new, really. Rather, they have been a deep and integral part of a dynamic tradition of western monastic experience and wisdom for 1,500 years: Each one of us, pope or pauper, is a follower of Jesus, called daily to “Listen carefully … and incline the ear of your heart” (Prologue of the Rule of Benedict). We actually think you might find reminders and insights on these themes in every book we publish.
Take a look!
Christoffersen Editorial DirectorSome are calling the Synod on Synodality “the greatest consultation effort in human history” and for good reason. It is no small task to listen to the world’s 1.36 billion Catholics, especially when many Catholics have felt marginalized or unwelcome. Taking a cue from this ongoing synodal process, the experts gathered for Reforming the Church: Global Perspectives place the broader issues relating to church reform in their historical context, while exploring themes that have ongoing relevance to the universal church. What emerges is a reflection on the theme of reform within the Church: what it has meant in the past, what it means for us now; and what it might mean in the future.

What Jesus taught through his preaching made an unforgettable impression upon his disciples. But it was the many succinctly formulated sayings of Jesus that stood out from the start because of their clear structure and vividness. In The Most Important Words of Jesus, renowned scholar Gerhard Lohfink focuses on the power, beauty, and seriousness of these seventy central sayings of the Lord.
When the Church confesses that Jesus is not only truly human but also truly God, that means he is the perfect image of God, God’s definitive word. It rests on the majestic claim that revealed itself, modestly, discreetly, and yet clearly, in every one of the seventy “sayings” or logia of Jesus. In this book, Lohfink helps us to understand what Jesus is talking about in these sharply defined words.

Michele Murray is professor in the department of religion, society, and culture at Bishop’s University, in Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada, where she served as the dean of arts and science, and dean of arts, for a decade. Her research areas include Jewish-Christian relations in the ancient world, and interaction among Eastern-Mediterranean religions in late antiquity.
“In her learned and lucid commentary on the humorous book of Tobit, Michele Murray combines scholarly observations that shed light on the literary, intertextual, and cultural world of this work with insightful personal reflections and illustrative vignettes prompted by the social, ethical, and emotional dimensions of the story. She ensures that her readers will discover new meanings in the text and in themselves.”
This commentary considers the book of Tobit through a specifically feminist lens, discoursing on topics fundamental to the human experience in the story, such as grief, death, family relationships, belonging to a minority community, disability issues, and contending with why bad things happen to good people.
“With this engaging treatment of Tobit, the social world of the story comes alive through comparisons to historical and modern equivalents. Feminist and intersectional concerns are prominent, creating a dialogue between ancient text and modern social issues.”
Lawrence M. Wills Boston College School of Theology and Ministry“This book, the first full-length feminist commentary on the Book of Tobit, is simply a delight—a commentary that fixes its lenses on the ancient context and our own. Its intersectional approach lifts up the connections among gender, sexuality, race, and ability as they pertain to social justice.”
Adele Reinhartz University of OttawaFor more WISDOM COMMENTARY see pages 38–39.
In this commentary, Lynn R. Huber situates Revelation and its earliest audiences in the overlapping worlds of ancient Asia Minor (modern Turkey) and first-century Judaism. She also examines how interpreters from different generations living within other worlds have found meaning in this image-rich and meaning-full book.
“By blending queer and multicultural perspectives with attention to material culture, Huber shows us what’s at stake in interpreting the Apocalypse.”
Greg CareyLancaster Theological Seminary
“This monumental book is a wonderful interdisciplinar and intersectional reading of Revelation, bringing much needed insights from feminist, womanist and queer theory. As engaging as it is accessible, this volume will surely become the go-to commentary for a notoriously rich and challenging text.”
Meredith J. C. Warren University of Sheffield“If you have questions about the gendered imagery in Revelation (and who doesn’t?), now you have a reliable guide in Lynn Huber. Essential reading for anyone who wants to dive deeper into Revelation’s mysteries.”

The Motif of the ecclesia ab Abel from Augustine to James Alison
Florian Klug
Foreword by Massimo Faggioli
In Beyond the Visible Church, theologian Florian Klug investigates the Abel motif hermeneutically throughout Christian church history. By showing how the biblical motif of Abel was read and used by representative theologians like Augustine, Bonaventure, Martin Luther, Yves Congar, and others of each epoch, Klug builds the story of the Church’s self-conception and shows how it has evolved over time. By tracing this theological and ecclesiological history and how the motif formed theologians and the Church over time, Klug shows readers a new way to conceive and understand God’s universal will for salvation.
“In this tour de force of historical-theological scholarship, Florian Klug analyzes the use of the symbol ecclesia ab Abel from the patristic age to the medieval, modern, and contemporary periods and shows how the reality of the church exists outside its visible confines. I strongly recommend Klug’s book for a graduate course on the church.”
Peter C. Phan Georgetown University“Florian Klug displays wide-ranging theological knowledge, and takes his readers on a winding but clear and enriching pilgrimage across Church tradition.”
Karen Kilby, Durham University
“Besides offering a timely reflection on a perennial theme— namely, the church’s hidden operation in history since Abel— Beyond the Visible Church brings together elements seldom found in a single book. The result is a valuable reminder that the true church, despite its sociological elements, remains a mystery that is not—and never has been—easily circumscribed.”
Aaron Pidel, SJ Marquette UniversityPromulgated by Pope Francis
“Massimo Faggioli presents the historical and theological context for intelligently understanding Pope Francis’s reform of the Roman Curia, an institution many popes have tried to reform with limited success.”
Thomas J. Reese, SJ
“This book offers an insightful, honest and must-read assessment of one of the most ambitious reforms of the Francis papacy.”

During the lockdown caused by the Covid-19 crisis, streets were emptied, churches closed, and a relationship with nature developed in which questions to be asked again in light of the crisis arose: Is God present in nature? Is communion with God in nature possible? Is there a relationship between the God of creation, the God of history, and the God we worship in Sunday liturgies?
“Dermot Lane is a prophetic leader inspiring the church’s growing ecological consciousness. He thinks outside the anthropocentric box to work out a fresh and theologically rich understanding of the natural world.”
Margaret Daly-Denton, author of Psalm-Shaped Prayerfulness
“Fr. Lane sketches how ecological awareness can, and should, help us to reshape Catholic theology and worship for living together on a planet in crisis.”
Terrence W. Tilley Professor Emeritus of Theology Fordham UniversityIn Nature Praising God, Dermot Lane explores these questions by returning to the Bible. The Christian tradition shows that nature is understood as a living community, is graced by God, and has a sacramental character. He suggests that readers change their perception of how nature is traditionally regarded as a resource for human needs— and embrace a new way of praising God through an appreciation of and care for the myriad life forms on earth. The result of these explorations is the outline of a new theology of nature praising God, with lessons for the way we worship God in our churches today.
“A book which sparkles with delightful thoughts inspired both by nature and by humanity.”

Preface by Douglas
ChristieIn May and October of 1968, Thomas Merton offered two extended conferences at Our Lady of the Redwoods Abbey, a Cistercian women’s community in Northern California. Comprising over twenty-six hours of previously unpublished material, Thomas Merton in California is practical and applicable, as well as searching and inspired. It is essential for Merton readers and scholars, and all those interested in deepening their spiritual lives.
“Thomas Merton in California gives readers the privilege to sense for themselves the formidable creative charge of those encounters as if they were there. What higher praise could there be for this book?”
Br. David Steindl-Rast, OSB, monk, author, co-founder of grateful.org
“Merton was at his best in informal settings. Edited with intelligence, warmth, and clear documentation, the book makes some of his last, most important teaching on prayer widely available.”
Bonnie Thurston, author of Shaped By the End You Live For: Thomas Merton’s Monastic Spirituality
“What a marvelous, unexpected gift! These series of informal talks sparkle and inspire with Thomas Merton’s characteristic insight, humor and wisdom. This volume presents Merton at the top of his form and fills a gap we didn’t even know existed in the literary record of the final months of his life.”

Nathalie Becquart, XMCJ; Foreword by Patricia Murray, IBVMReligious life is vitally necessary to the Catholic church today. But it will exist in new and varied forms which speak to the spiritual hungers of different societies, ethnic cultures, and generations. God’s Call Is Everywhere is the first comparative analysis of research in six countries investigating women who have entered vowed religious life in Catholicism in the twenty-first century. The data include survey responses from institute leaders, formation directors, and the women themselves, conducted in the United States, Canada, Australia, and France, along with focus groups and interviews in Ireland, the United Kingdom, and France. By examining a summary of these studies and comparing differences, readers will learn how to move forward in the future.
“God’s Call Is Everywhere should be recommended reading for anyone involved in vocational ministry. It truly is a snapshot of the current generation of young women who are discerning and developing their response to the call of God.”

David N. Bell is professor emeritus of religious studies and dean of theology at Queen’s College, St. John’s, Newfoundland, and canon theologian in the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in St. John’s. He is the author of a number of books published by Cistercian Publications.
This volume, the first complete translation in more than three-hundred years, presents one of the most important texts in the history of medieval Latin spirituality. Written between 1170 and 1190 by an unidentified Cistercian monkpriest, Meditationes piisimae, “Very Devout Meditations,” became one of the most popular and widely distributed pieces of spiritual literature in the whole of the Middle Ages. The work survives in at least 670 manuscripts with the complete English translation of the treatise published in 1701.
“David Bell has brought to life a fascinating chapter in the larger-than-life image of Bernard of Clairvaux created by the misattribution of many works to this revered Cistercian author. The volume is a great introduction to the rich field of Cistercian spirituality beyond the already well-known giants like Bernard.”
Anne L.Clark, Professor Emerita of Religion, University of Vermont
“Who knew that the most popular work by Bernard of Clairvaux in the medieval period was not by Bernard at all? David Bell presents this influential anonymous work to modern English audiences with a thorough introduction. As usual, David Bell is as entertaining as he is effortlessly erudite.”

This nourishing meditation is a rejuvenating reminder that the people of God are the ones called to celebrate their own mystery of faith.”
Richard S. Vosko, author and liturgical designerThomas O’Loughlin is professor emeritus of historical theology at the University of Nottingham, UK. He is the author of Eating Together, Becoming One: Taking Up Pope Francis’s Call to Theologians, The Rites and Wrongs of Liturgy: Why Good Liturgy Matters, and Washing Feet: Imitating the Example of Jesus in the Liturgy Today, from Liturgical Press.

James Martin, author of The Jesuit Guide to Almost Everything
“Since the rich fare of Scripture provided by the post-conciliar Lectionary has brought immeasurable gifts to God’s people with its lavish presentation at the table of God’s word, this book is a captivating study for presiders, homilists, deacons, lectors, cantors, and all the faithful who feast on the banquet provided by the Liturgy of the Word.”
Michael Walsh has been associated with the Society of Jesus for over fifty years, for part of that time as a member. He has been a frequent contributor to The Tablet, and he has written, edited, or translated two dozen books, including histories of the papacy.

Edited by Hugh Feiss, OSB, and Maureen M. O’BrienThis second volume of A Benedictine Reader looks at Benedictine monks and nuns as they moved to new continents and adapted to new environments. Committed to the liturgy by their profession, they played an important role in the liturgical renewal that culminated at Vatican II. Rooted in God, church, and their surroundings, they showed remarkable resilience in the face of many struggles, and their impact has been deep and stabilizing for the global church.
“An invaluable collection of texts illuminating the vast span of Benedictine monasticism.”

An Inclusive Translation and Daily Commentary
Judith Sutera, OSB
This gender-neutral translation is true to the original text but provides an alternative for individuals and groups who prefer such a version over the masculine language of the original as it was written for St. Benedict’s monks. It also offers some background into the context in which it was written, as well as reflections on its meaning for contemporary life, making it a resource for those encountering the Rule for the first time or those who have cherished it for years.

brings together today’s best scholars to provide modern readers with a truly fresh look at every book of the Bible. While issues of gender are primary in this project, the volumes also address the intersecting issues of power, authority, ethnicity, race, class, and religious belief and practice. Each volume incorporates diverse voices and differing interpretation from various parts of the world, showing the importance of social location in the process of interpretation and that there is no single definitive feminist interpretation of a text.

This multivolume commentary series reflects the latest developments in a relatively new method of biblical study: literary criticism. The authors approach the books of the Hebrew Bible as literary works, recognizing that the stories and poetry can be better appreciated if one is acquainted with the techniques whereby the ancient Hebrew authors told stories and wrote poems as well as the strategies that modern readers use to understand them.
