Welcome to the Little Theatre Club’s production of ‘The Pirates of Penzance’. Many of you will know that we have presented this wonderful version of the Gilbert and Sullivan operetta twice before. It is a great favourite of ours and our audience’s as it contains not only all the well known music by Sir Arthur Sullivan, but also has an injection of fun and slapstick humour from the Broadway version. We have certainly had lots of laughter at rehearsals with the gentlemen of the chorus rushing about as either sword-wielding pirates (every young boy’s fantasy) or incompetent policemen! I am really excited about our next show ‘Copacabana’. We have never done this before so it will be challenging for us. If you like lots of dancing and spectacle with Barry Manilow’s music - this is the show for you. I do hope you have an enjoyable evening with us.

Handing over the cheque to BUST from Kiss Me Kate
BUST Lady McAdden Breast Screen Unit Where it all started... The Lady McAdden Unit, affectionately known as BUST, has provided a major health function for women since the unit opened in 1976. The official opening followed a massive fundraising campaign which was spearheaded by the South East Essex ‘Federation of Townswomen’s Guilds’ to whom the charity remains affiliated, and supported by Lady Dorothy McAdden, wife of the late Sir Stephen McAdden, then MP for Southend East. Why breast cancer screening is important... Screening aims to detect cancer in its infancy. Early detection of breast abnormalities could have a significant effect on treatment and beating the disease. in addition countless women have their fears allayed.
When Frederic was a little boy, his nurse (Ruth) was told to apprentice him to a pilot. Embarrassingly she apprenticed him to a band of pirates by mistake and stays with them as a maid . Frederic loathes his trade and is happy to leave the band of pirates as he is now 21 and his indentures are up. Ruth wishes to marry him, and, having been at sea all his life he knows no better and finally agrees. Frederic then comes across a group of girls and their chaperones, daughters of Major-General Stanley. Frederic renounces Ruth once he sees their beauty. Frederic is attracted to one daughter, Mabel, and his feelings are reciprocated. The pirates then endeavour to seize the other girls and threaten them with marriage but the Major-General arrives in time and tells the pirates he is an orphan so his daughters can go free. Frederic then plans to lead an army of police against the pirates. However the Pirate King and Ruth have some surprising news for Frederic - a trick of fate means that his indentures are not yet up and he has to return to the pirates. The police try to hide but eventually meet the pirates who easily defeat them, before yielding ‘in Queen Victoria’s name’. The Major-General then pardons all and allows them to marry his daughters. Act 1 takes place on a rocky shore. Act 2 takes place at the home of Major-General Stanley.
Doreen Goodfellow - Director / Chorus Mistress / Wardrobe Mistress. Doreen is once again at the helm steering us all through a hilarious romp on the rocky shores of Penzance. She has directed numerous shows in the past as well as being chorus mistress and wardrobe mistress. She would like to thank everyone for making this an enjoyable show.
Hannah Turner - Stage Director Hannah worked as Resident Stage Manager at the New Empire Theatre for three years after graduating from university and left the theatre last year to pursue a career in teaching. This is Hannah’s first show as Stage Director for The Little Theatre Club although she has been involved in previous shows through her role at the New Empire.
Beverley Onslow - Choreographer Beverley has been a member of the LTC for more years than she cares to remember! Over the last ten years she has choreographed many of our shows including ‘Will Rogers Follies’, ‘Oklahoma’, ‘Annie’ and ‘The King and I’. ‘The Pirates of Penzance’ has probably been the most comical and adventurous yet. Beverley would like to thank Tim Cater for his help in presenting the fight sequences.
Paul Green - Musical Director We are very pleased that Paul is conducting ‘The Pirates of Penzance’, his 19th show for the LTC, a show he first took part in 50 years ago. His own association with the LTC goes back to the 1950’s when, as a schoolboy, he first played in the orchestra for their shows at the Palace Theatre. Since then he has conducted shows for all the leading operatic societies in town. With four young grandchildren taking up plenty of his time he now has less time to spend on other hobbies.

Ryan trained professionally at Masters Performing Arts College and Whitehall Performing Arts Centre. His favourite roles to date are Nick Piaza in ‘Fame’ and Nankipoo in the ‘Mikado‘. 2007 saw Ryan successfully audition for the Gary Musik Company, based in Nashville Tennesee. This will see him cruise around the world entertaining.
Since joining the LTC in 1984 Paul has enjoyed performing in many shows including taking lead roles in ‘She Loves Me’, ‘Oklahoma’ ‘Guys and Dolls’, ‘Mack and Mabel’ and most recently as Gangster 2 in ‘Kiss Me Kate’. He has enjoyed the challenge of playing the Pirate King although was shocked to discover he is being trusted with a sword…
Sarah joined LTC in 1999 when she was 15, lead roles since then include Cinderella in ‘Slipper and the Rose’, Sally Smith ‘Me & My Girl’, Tuptim, ‘The King & I’, Katie Brown ‘Calamity Jane’, Sarah Brown ‘Guys and Dolls’ and most recently she co-choreographed our Autumn production of ‘Kiss Me Kate’. Sarah is looking forward to swapping her sea legs for dancing feet to choreograph our next show ‘Copacabana’.

John has been involved in over 30 shows for the LTC. He has played numerous characters, worked backstage and front of house, produced ‘7 Brides for 7 Brothers’, and has been assistant producer a number of times. The challenge of presenting a notoriously difficult Gilbert and Sullivan patter song has proved irresistible and John is determined to get it right at least once during the week!
Sally has been a member of the LTC for many years and in that time has directed shows, worked as Chorus Mistress and played various leading roles including Auntie Mame in ‘Mame’, Aunt Ella in ‘Oklahoma’, Lady Thiang in ‘The King and I’, Dorothy Brock in ‘42nd Street’ and Ruth in ‘The Pirates of Penzance’. Indeed Sally played Ruth the last time LTC presented it and she is delighted to be reprising this role again.
Dave is now a veteran of four shows and whilst this is his first G & S, Pirates holds a special place in his heart. His Mum and late Father met on the show in 1946 playing Frederic and Edith. This is for them with thanks, love and affection. Enjoy the show!

Before joining LTC Ian was a member of Westcliff Operatic (WODS) for 10 years, mainly in the chorus but also enjoying some smaller roles, such as Jamie in ‘My Fair Lady’ and The Purser in ‘Anything Goes’. He was encouraged out of ‘retirement’ in 2004 to join the cast of LTC’s production of ‘Calamity Jane’ and is now pleased to be a member of such a fun and friendly group. Ian is looking forward to being Samuel in this production of ‘Pirates’- the last time he appeared in the show was as a 15 year old when he played a very young policeman!
JO ADAMS EDITH
This is Jo’s second show with the LTC after debuting as ‘blonde bombshell’ Lois Lane in ‘Kiss Me Kate’, a role she enjoyed immensely. She is looking forward to the challenge of the role of Edith and stretching her voice beyond her usual alto comfort zone.
LAURA DEAVES KATE
This is Laura’s second show with LTC having joined just in time to be part of the chorus for ‘Kiss Me Kate’. Laura loves to perform and when she’s not acting, she is singing and playing her saxophone. In between her leisure activities, she manages to find time to work for Southend Theatres!
LAURA WILSON ISABEL
Laura joined the club at the age of 15 after appearing in ‘Carousel’ & ‘Will Rogers Follies’ as a child. She made her adult leading debut as Peggy in ‘42nd Street‘. She has also enjoyed working alongside the production team as dance captain for various shows.
Smoking and alcohol is not permitted in the auditorium. Due to the use of radio microphones, and in the interest of the audiences enjoyment of the show, mobile phones must be switched off. The taking of flash photography, video and sound recording is strictly prohibited.
