As we wrap up another school year, I would like to acknowledge how phenomenal it was to see what could be accomplished during these challenging times. To the writers, thank you for sharing your voice. To the editors, thank you for your role in making each issue more exceptional than the last. To Ms. Duffy, thank you for your unwavering support. To the Layout Team, and to my graduating Head of Layout, Audrey, thank you for using your gifts of art and design to make each issue look beautiful. The front cover is an image of ships sailing towards the horizon as the sun sets, representing how our Grads are journeying forth towards an unpredictable, bright future. The lights in the water are the candles they leave behind for the Grade 11s, and the roses on their boats are their gifts from the Grade 11s for their journey. The back cover consists of various symbols chosen by each Grad to commemorate them individually. These are talents, memories, inside jokes, and everything in between. A Love Letter

Believe it or not, I have been part of the Globe & Halo since Grade 8. Five years and some emotional attachment later, here is my journey with this newspaper/magazine/work of art and a long overdue thank you, all with oozing sentimentality.

This is my love letter to the Globe & Halo.

Part 1: The Memories

When I first joined the Globe & Halo, I was ecstatic, nervous, and everything in between. I felt too shy and scared to submit an article until one of the Grade 12 editors encouraged me to write—so I did. A few months later, it got printed and I realized that no one really cared about it. I am not trying to say that articles are insignificant; rather, at this moment five years ago I started to realize that no one is actively scrutinizing my mistakes (at least not to my knowledge). This was absolutely liberating, and I continued to write articles occasionally, landing myself here at this one.

My true passion in the Globe & Halo, however, has been Layout. I joined because a senior member advertised how much fun and creative freedom there was (psst: for anyone with even an inkling of interest in Layout, I will advertise these two qualities as well, since the catchphrase of the Globe & Halo has honestly been “Layout could use more help”). During my first two years on Layout, we used Adobe InDesign, and so I still remember staying in the library after school working and chatting with the other girls. We would spend our afternoons showing each other our work with beaming pride and excitement or asking for advice about how to make layouts interesting with our limited fonts. Fun fact: we could not download fonts into InDesign, so we instead typed the text into sites like DaFont, screenshotted it, and then uploaded it as a picture. We complained about it a lot, but now I would trade all the fonts on Canva (our current program) just to be with everyone in the library again. I joined Layout for the promise of fun and creativity, but little did I know what kind of camaraderie and friendship I would be lucky enough to experience.

Part 2: Gratitude

I’ve never written one of those Editor’s Notes on the front page, since I’ve simply been more in the background with Layout, so here are my thank you’s for the first and last time in the Globe & Halo. First of all, a huge thank you to Ms. Duffy for dedicating your time to this magazine amidst all the other clubs you juggle. I am so grateful that you truly let us take the reins and give us as much creative freedom as possible in everything from the articles to the covers. To Marian, my partner in crime for these last couple years, thank you for putting up with me and being so on top of everything. If you ever publish a book in the future, call me up to do any graphics you need. Thank you to Carmen, Ariana, and all the editors for everything you do; it has been a pleasure working with you. To all the writers, thank you for putting yourselves out there.

The Globe & Halo would literally be empty without you, and I hope you continue to write wherever you may go. Finally to the Art Department and Layout Team, thank you for tolerating my constant emails and reminders about deadlines and for creating incredible covers and layouts. Stay creative and incredible always.

Part 3: Goodbye

In Grade 8, I wrote my first article titled “A Little Flower In Bloom”, and I wanted to echo that I am still growing, changing, and “blooming”. The Globe & Halo gave me a voice and has been a source of joy throughout the years, and so thank you again, my dear 24-page newspaper/magazine/work of art. Though this is incredibly cliché, this is not so much a goodbye as it is a “see you again later” (because you can count on me to pick up a copy of the Globe & Halo whenever I visit the school in the future).

BY MAYA MIOR (10-3) With coronavirus updates constantly dominating the news, it’s easy to forget about anything else going on in the world. In the midst of a pandemic, the news still continues, so we’ve compiled a list of 5 major news events you may have missed.

1 SPINOSAURUS It seems that Harry has another dinosaur to add to his bucket, because we’ve just gained some groundbreaking new insights into the infamous Spinosaurus. Based on a recently-discovered fossil, scientists have determined that these 15-meter long dinosaurs would’ve spent much of their time in the freshwater rivers of what is now Africa. This discovery offers key insights into how the creature (first popularized in the Jurassic Park movies) would’ve survived in its prehistoric environment. The discovery was made back in 2015, but it’s taken scientists significant amounts of analysis to determine exactly how this discovery impacts our understanding of these creatures, and prehistoric life on the whole.

4 3 UFO SIGHTINGS Looks like the truth really was out there, because the U.S. Pentagon has just released three videos showing U.F.O.s, or as they were described in the release, “unexplained aerial phenomena”.

The clips, filmed by Blink-182 member Tom DeLonge, first surfaced online back in 2017, but this is the first time that they’ve been confirmed to be legitimate.

Each clip shows a different object flying through the air at extremely high speeds, to the point where infrared sensors were unable to move fast enough to keep up.

While it still doesn’t provide concrete evidence of life on other planets, it’s sparked intrigue and excitement into the hearts of alien enthusiasts across the world.

CANADA CRACKS DOWN ON GUN CONTROL Following the recent tragic mass shooting in Nova Scotia, the government has made a rapid move to ban 1500 different types of what they refer to as “assault style guns”. It’s a move that has been in the works since the party’s federal campaign, and it’s no ordinary bill.

In the government’s haste to pass legislation, the parliamentary process was accelerated, to the point where house readings were even skipped (Mr. Coady would be very disappointed). Supporters of the bill believe that action like this has been a long time coming, especially in a country like Canada, where gun control is notoriously strong already. Critics, on the other hand, disagree with the way the bill was passed, insisting that it “sidesteps democracy”.

REPUBLICANS CONFIRM RUSSIAN INTERFERENCE The Senate Intelligence Committee, led by members of the Republican Party, concluded a three-year-long bipartisan review to determine whether Russian interference actually occurred in the 2016 election. Trump has very publicly denied the claims since they emerged, but this week, a bipartisan committee led by members of his own party agreed for the first time that the 2017 report proving interference was both true and unmotivated by political gain. In the words of Senator Angus King, an Independent of Maine, "The case is closed...I don't know how you could have a much more credible source than a...a bipartisan committee that came to a unanimous conclusion." Trump has yet to respond to the claims.

5 TRUMP AND THE MIDDLE EAST While the world has been distracted by the COVID-19 outbreak, it seems that the Trump administration has been busy with concerns of their own, many of which revolve around the Middle East. Recently, Trump has had US troops completing performative training exercises with the United Arab Emirates army. In these exercises, troops work to hunt down mock-enemy forces (who don traditional Afghan clothing). Simultaneously, Trump has cut one billion dollars in funding to Afghanistan as a clear show of defiance against the current political conflicts of the region. This isn’t, however, a way to try to encourage stability in the region. Instead, it’s a calculated effort to avoid endangering a current agreement between the Trump administration and the Taliban, which is threatened by the current political atmosphere of Afghanistan.

By Carmen Ojeda (12-2) On January 5th, 2020, the World Health Organization released a short statement regarding a matter that had recently come to the attention of one of their local offices. This succinct, unassuming little article, found in the Disease Outbreak News section of the W.H.O. website beside many others just like it, detailed the discovery of 44 confirmed cases of a “pneumonia of unknown cause”.

Although the statement itself seemed unremarkable, it marked the beginning of one of the most widespread outbreaks of disease in history, and this “pneumonia of unknown cause” would soon have over 3.85 million cases worldwide.

Would Have Thought?

This article, short as it is, isn’t just a particularly ominous case of foreshadowing - it’s also proof that the World Health Organization has been monitoring the pandemic since the beginning. Before COVID-19 even had a name, the W.H.O. was aware of its presence in Wuhan, China, and was putting out publicly accessible statements about its development. This evidence of the W.H.O.’s early awareness of the disease doesn’t seem particularly important, but recent criticism by U.S. President Donald Trump has made documents like this, that demonstrate the W.H.O.’s efforts to keep the world informed, very relevant.

Over the past few months, as COVID-19 grew from a regional anomaly to a global pandemic, President Trump made many statements that seemed to contradict what the W.H.O. was telling the world. Although the U.S. Government and the World Health Organization initially seemed to be working well together, with W.H.O.’s Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, praising the United States and the president himself for taking "the right approach” after a visit in early March, this cooperation wouldn’t last. On the 23rd of March, Donald Trump tweeted about what he believed to be a potential treatment for the coronavirus, stating, "HYDROXYCHLOROQUINE & AZITHROMYCIN, taken together, have a real chance to be one of the biggest game changers in the history of medicine”. Two days later, on the 23rd, Tedros said at a press conference that "using untested medicines without the right evidence could raise false hope and even do more harm than good”, seemingly in response to the president's tweet.

It’s well known that President Trump has a history of taking perceived slights very personally - could this seemingly innocuous statement have caused him to view the W.H.O. in a negative light? Days later, on April 7th, Trump released his first statement criticizing W.H.O. and blaming their “faulty recommendation” for the spread of the virus in the United States. This statement, although seen by many as inflammatory, was largely brushed off by the public as simply another one of the president’s tweets - which is why many were caught off guard when, a week later on April 14th, the Trump administration halted funding to the World Health Organization.

The United States of America has been contributing to W.H.O. since it was founded, and has been its largest contributor for a number of years, meaning that the temporary halt in funding from the States, . during a time when W.H.O. is attempting to combat a major medical threat, is absolutely devastating. Some have accused Trump of being short-sighted and nationalistic by abandoning the World Health Organization during the COVID-19 pandemic, and their complaints have merit; Donald Trump’s approach to international relations has always been criticized for being overly antagonistic. This is only the most recent in a long series of highly controversial interactions with international organizations, which includes putting pressure on the U.N. by threatening to pull funding, and dissolving N.A.F.T.A. (the North American Free Trade Agreement) and replacing it with the U.S.M.C.A. (United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement). Trump’s supporters have their own criticisms, arguing that, because the W.H.O. knew about the pandemic early on, they should have been able to prevent its spread.

This controversy forces us to ask ourselves very difficult questions: who is responsible for the pandemic? Could anyone have prevented this? The answer, of course, is that we don’t know, and we can’t change the past now -

the only thing to do is move forward.

WHAT THE CORONAVIRUS HAS DONE TO THE WORLD ECONOMY

By Renee Tung (11-3) As the coronavirus slowly destroys people’s lives, the world’s economy will never be the same. Governments have been ordering citizens to quarantine in their homes, and everything has been put on hold. What is happening to the world economy now? Will our lives ever be the same again?

At this moment, the global economy has been noted as far more severe than the 2008 global financial crisis (GFC) and even the Great Depression. Particularly, there has been a big shift in stock markets. Investing in stock markets has been a common way for many people to increase their earnings. According to the World Economic Forum, stock markets have collapsed by 50%, causing many people to lose their savings. Additionally, oil prices have drastically declined. With decreasing demand, there are not many consumers. Remarkably, oil prices have not fallen excessively since June 2001. Countries that have been heavily relying on fossil fuels as a source of their economy have been suffering the downfall. Oil prices have become cheaper for consumers to buy, but it has been affecting the oil producers.

Since people have been advised to stay at home, consumers have been stockpiling goods. As citizens buy groceries and necessities, there is currently a huge demand for supermarkets and online delivery services.

Investors are now choosing safe investments; namely, gold, which is traditionally known as a “safe haven” for investments in times like these. But although the price of gold has begun to increase, investors are still fearful.

Since nobody knows when the pandemic will end, actions that were taken by the government may not be enough to stop the continuous decline. As a result, central banks in many countries, such as the United Kingdom, have been slashing their interest rates, and borrowing money has become cheaper. Numerous countries have been using this strategy to encourage more spending to attempt to boost the economy. In spite of these efforts, many people around the world have lost their jobs. For instance, economists are suggesting Canada's unemployment rate is around 20 percent, and Statistics Canada has noted that Canadians have lost one million jobs in March. Charles St-Arnaud, the chief economist at Alberta Central, has stated that Alberta, British Columbia and Ontario are the most vulnerable to this economic shock. According to the CBC news, there have been three million employment insurance claims over the past month,and more than one million jobs are lost in Canada. The unemployment rate has risen up to 13 percent, as of April 2020.

Will the world ever recover from this economic loss? For now, nobody knows. However, we must remain hopeful and do our best to prevent the spread of the virus further. What is important is that everyone maintains a safe distance from each other, stays at home as much as possible and follows the Government’s protocol. We have had a lot of time on our hands lately, so here are some TV shows/movies that we watched and would highly recommend for you to watch too!

On My Block

As I was quarantined in my room after returning from New Zealand, I was looking for a show to stall time, until my brother recommended that I watch On My Block. At first glance, it seemed boring, because it was another typical show following the lives of four teenagers–as if I didn’t see enough of that already. As I continued to watch the show, I realized that this one was different. The leads were Latino and AfricanAmerican, both under-represented groups on television. On top of that, the show touches on topics that should be integrated more in western media, such as PTSD, trauma, self-discovery, self-love, family issues, gang problems, and many others. All in all, this was a refreshing show, as one could see people of colour as the lead actors, and it delves into important topics that western media usually does not discuss enough.

My Hero Academia

Never in a million years did I ever think I was going to be interested in anime, but then quarantine came along, and well, let’s just say it really does get you to explore different things. A personal quarantine fave of mine is a show called My Hero Academia. For those of you just getting into anime, or those of you who are hesitant to dive into the genre, I highly recommend this show. At its core, the show is just about a young boy trying to achieve his dreams, despite the fact that he is at a severe disadvantage. It is a heartwarming tale filled with inspiration, and I often find myself laughing, and even crying alongside the characters. Each episode is only 20 minutes long, so you really have nothing to lose, especially during these endless hours of self-isolation. Overall, this show is so hilarious and motivational, and definitely deserves 5 stars out of 5.

Crash Landing On You

After I returned from the LFA trip to New Zealand, I had a lot of time to pass, being in self-isolation for two weeks. Thus, I was enamoured by the striking image of a North Korean soldier, Ri Jung Hyuk, standing opposite of South Korean businesswoman, Yoon Se Ri, on Netflix. Not only does this show grapple with the complex relations between capitalist South Korea and communist North Korea, it also deals with heart wrenching themes, such as separation and ill-fated love; all of which are tied together by humorous commentary and multifaceted supporting characters. I won’t spoil the juicy details of the plot, however, I will admit that many tears were shed.

Crash Landing On You has certainly made its way up the list of my favourite Kdramas, and I plan to rewatch it religiously once school ends. I highly recommend this show to anyone who has Netflix, or to anyone who has never watched a K-drama before!

Definitely, Maybe

All of this time inside has given my friends and me a lot of time to watch movies. For three weeks straight, we would watch all the romance movies that Netflix offers together through Netflix Party. One night, we chose Definitely, Maybe. A classic! But I definitely did forget how good this movie is. This is about a father, Will Hayes (Ryan Reynolds. Definitely my favorite movie from him), explaining to his daughter (Abigail Breslin) the story of his past relationships, while she guesses which one her mother is. Although Will is currently going through a divorce, telling his daughter about his past loves leads to some interesting revelations. This movie is such a feelgood, and will certainly make you just as invested in Will’s relationships as his daughter is. As we all love a good rom-com, this one is definitely a re-watch.

The Emoji Movie Before you dismiss this review, no, The Emoji Movie is not the worst movie ever made. But is it the best movie ever made? Absolutely yes. This movie is about a young emoji, Gene đ&#x;˜? , who is just trying to find his place in the world. With the help of his friends, HI-5 ✋ (played by James Corden I may add) and Jailbreak, he learns how to love â?¤ and accept himself for who he is. Gene is different. He does not fit in, but there is nothing wrong â?Œ with that. Not to spoil the movie, but in one scene, you get THREE poop jokes! You have not LIVED until you have seen this movie. I would highly recommend this movie.

New Girl

Between trying my expertise in the kitchen, skateboarding with my sister, and spending my mom’s hard-earned money on useless Urban Outfitters online orders, I managed to fit in a couple episodes of my favourite TV series: New Girl. The show is one of my favourites, but was removed from Netflix before I could rewatch it for the third time. So the only way I got my weekly fix of New Girl was through 123movies... which may or may not be filled with sus ads. The show follows Jess, who moves in with her three male roommates, while making her way through her job as an elementary school teacher. If you have some time during these next couple of weeks, I recommend throwing it on your Netflix to-watch list before it gets taken down again.

The show is the perfect balance of awkward comedy and an exciting narrative that will keep you hitting that ‘play next episode’ button long after you should have turned the TV off and gotten back to your Nazi mouse book.

One Punch Man

One Punch Man is a cinematic masterpiece. From the well-executed satire to his refreshing expressionless face, I can confidently say that though most animes are trash, this is an exception. Not only is the protagonist's wonderful, shiny, bald head extremely attractive, but his cool and calm demeanor truly inspires me to nonchalantly carry out the rest of my life. The story is undoubtedly epic.

Needless to say, I have never felt a stronger urge to shave my head. The sight of Saitama’s (the protagonist) beaming scalp pushes me to make this reckless decision.

10 QUARANTINE PRODUCTIVITY TIPS TRINITY MA (10-3)

1. Work while listening to rain soundtracks, music without lyrics or in silence! Do whatever keeps you focused. I recommend the Studio Ghibli soundtracks or searching up café music on YouTube. There are lots of collections of quality music with calm vibes and quiet jazz. It sounds like a hipster cafe...and it will put you in a productive mood!

2. Plan your day with to-do lists and keep an agenda! You could use Google Tasks or Apple Notes to jot down all your goals for the week.

3. Have a designated study spot and place for Zoom meetings or work periods. It may be tempting to lounge on the couch in the living room or watch TikToks at your study space but it is more efficient if you keep them separate. When you aren’t studying, get up and go somewhere else.

4. Have good posture and use an ergonomic chair, keyboard, and mouse! This is important when you are sitting for long periods of time to avoid injury.

5. Take micropauses - quick breaks, such as looking away from your computer or relaxing your arms at your sides.

6. Remember to stretch after long periods of sitting in your chair. Grab a drink of water during your break. It’s important to stay hydrated!

7. Limit your screen time. Although this may be difficult to do, I suggest finding a new hobby instead and experimenting with different quarantine activities.

8. Make sure to do other activities throughout the day that will boost your mood such as exercise, listening to music, or dancing!

It depends on your personal interests!

9. Open a window to let light and fresh air in, take a walk around your backyard or in your neighbourhood and appreciate nature!

10. Organize your room and clear your workspace! There should be natural lighting with no distractions and minimal clutter.

SOCIAL DISTANCING SURVIVAL GUIDE NATALIE VIEGAS (10-1)

None of us could have ever imagined being confined in our homes for weeks on end. Amidst the COVID-19 crisis, however, this has become our reality, and it will take some time before our lives return to normal. In the meantime, here are some ways to not only keep busy and entertained, but also healthy and sane during social distancing.

1. The COVID-19 pandemic has proven to be the perfect opportunity to spend quality time with family members. Hold a Family Fun Night. Play a lively game of charades, enjoy a game of Scrabble, or work on a crossword puzzle together. Games are an excellent way to share laughter with your loved ones.

2. Remember to stay active. Now is a great time to try out new forms of exercise. Give HIIT or yoga workouts a try. If you can, take a jog around your neighbourhood and enjoy the sunny weather and fresh air.

3. How about our spiritual well being? During the pandemic, we’ve been unable to attend Mass due to restrictions. Luckily, we have dozens of Masses live streamed on our Archdiocese’s website (rcav.org). Another website you may want to visit is guslloyd.com, which has inspiring 60-second reflections based on the daily readings.

4. Unwind with your favourite movie. Spend some time binge-watching your favourite shows on Netflix, or search for a new TV series to enjoy.

5. Rediscover a past skill or hidden talent. Perhaps you have an old instrument lying around; take it out and try playing a tune.

6. Use this time to take up a new hobby. Give knitting a try! All you need is a ball of wool and some knitting needles. As a knitter, I know that knitting is a great way to get your mind off things, and it provides an end goal to work towards. A great sense of accomplishment comes from finishing a project. Make sure to start out easy, with a simple blanket or scarf. Soon, you’ll be on your way to more advanced projects.

7. Work on your hair routine. Perfect your braiding and flat ironing techniques, then try your hand at some more complicated hairstyles.

If you really get into it, you can even give yourself a COVID haircut!

8. Learn a new language. There are countless websites and apps, such as Duolingo, to help. As long as you practice regularly, you’ll be nearly fluent in your new language in no time. Buona Fortuna!

9. Write some poetry. We are all creative in our own unique way; there is a poet in each of us.

10. Spend some time in the kitchen! If you have a sweet tooth, try out a new baking recipe, such as cinnamon buns or carrot cake. Or, you can teach yourself to cook and impress your family with a delicious meal.

11. Dive into a good book. Try reading a new genre that you’re not used to.

12. While social distancing, find new ways to connect virtually with your family and friends. Call your grandparents or do a Skype call with elderly relatives. Hearing from you will surely be a treat for them.

13. Add some music into your day! Whether it’s rattling off a piece on the piano, or listening to a playlist with all your favourite songs, it’s uplifting to enjoy some cheerful beats and tunes during this time.

14. Paste some paper hearts onto your windows. At 7:00 pm each evening, step outside with pots and pans and join the rest of our nation in celebrating our frontline workers.

15. Start a journal. Write about whatever you wish, whether it’s someone you’re grateful for, or something you’d like to do once the pandemic has passed. One day, it will be interesting to go back and read your entries from your days in social isolation.

Adapting to this new situation can be difficult, but we can all find things which help make the days pass by faster. Stay safe, Angels!

What will you miss about the staff here?

I will miss our monthly staff meetings. With everyone having such busy schedules, it’s always great to come together once and month and discuss as a group!

What did you like most about your classroom?

I loved knowing that I was teaching in Sister Jo’s classroom, and the great air conditioning system!

What are some words of advice for students and teachers?

Breathe in, Breathe out. Works for me!

What was your favourite meal from the cafe?

The cafe always makes great food but if I had to pick, I would choose the Yorkshire pudding and roast beef.

Regardless if you’ve had a class taught by him or not, we’ve all seen Mr. Coady in the hallways during recess or on the way to our next class. I was able to catch up with Mr. Coady over the quarantine season and ask him a couple of questions about his time teaching at Little Flower Academy as he plans to retire after this school year. Here is Mr. Coady’s take on the last 39 years!

What’s your favourite class?

Well, Kelly, my favourite class has to be homeroom! It’s great to see everyone first thing in the morning, and homeroom really builds a community in the classroom.

What do you love doing most with students and staff?

I love teaching students and chatting with staff, but events and clubs have been the most fun and memorable. The Model United Nations Club, Walkathon, and the Swim and Soccer teams are some of my favourites.

What was your favourite Model United Nations Trip?

Helping to run the Model United Nations Club and travelling with teachers and students across the globe has given me experiences I will never forget. The trip to China was incredible and very memorable, but I’d have to say Belgium for the waffles!

What’s one of your favourite memories from Little Flower Academy?

“In Franciscan Joy”: AN INTERVIEW WITH Natalie Yuen '99

It is not every day that the whole school is visited by a woman who is not only an LFA alumna, but also a discerning future Franciscan Sister of the Eucharist. After traveling all the way from the community’s motherhouse in Meriden, Connecticut, Natalie Yuen ‘99 spoke to Religion classes from Grades 8 to 12 about her elaborate, winding path after high school to where she is now, discerning religious life. We were blessed to hear her unique story, creatively presented as a chapter book, and to meet and engage with the witty, humble, and genuine woman. Students and staff alike were inspired by her return to LFA. Further, like Natalie, we were all encouraged to wholly trust in God’s intricate plan for us. In fact, it must have been God’s plan for the LFA Senior Concert Choir to sing a gospel song entitled “I Sing Because I’m Happy”, which coincidentally shares the same refrain as “Sparrow” by Audrey Assad-- a song that inspired Natalie herself to listen to God’s calling. We would like to thank Natalie again for selflessly speaking at our school, patiently answering these interview questions, and altogether touching our hearts. As you carry on in your everyday lives, do it as Natalie would: “In Franciscan Joy!”

Welcome back to LFA! How How did LFA help shape you to different is the school from your become the person you are time here? now?

The school is different in some ways but also the same in others. Obviously, much has changed in terms of the physical layout of the school over the past 20 years. The tearing down of the convent of the Sisters of St. Ann and the subsequent expansions and additions to the pre-existing buildings give the school a totally different look externally. But internally, the school is still very much the same. It still has the same close-knit, community-oriented spirit that made me feel like I was coming back home after all these years as soon as I walked through the doors.

Through the Sisters of St. Ann and the teachers and staff, LFA provided a lasting education for me that was firmly founded in academics, but more importantly, in faith which helped to carry me through some challenging moments in my life and inspired me to work and study hard and to serve others wholeheartedly.

Having the Sisters of St. Ann, especially in positions of teaching and leadership, was truly a gift in ways that I didn't realize or wasn't able to fully appreciate until now.

They provided a gentle, spiritual maturity, through their own particular calls to religious life, that really helped to form me as a young woman who was still trying to figure out who I was and what God was calling me to do.

What influences do you believe put you into this path of discerning religious life?

How did you know that God was and in conversation with God and with someone you trust so as to not make a calling you?

In terms of my experience, God's call was something that I truly felt on a heartlevel, and that I still feel to this day, even during times in my formation process that have been particularly challenging.

Discernment of a vocation to religious life is a process, day by day, moment by moment, which is why the formation period for most religious communities takes several years. I've known women who've discerned with religious communities for years and then decided not to continue in the formation process, so it's important to know that discerning with a religious community does not automatically guarantee that you will become a religious sister or a nun, and that's okay. It is a particular call to which not everyone is asked to respond, just like being a doctor, teacher or administrator. As for me, I don't know what God has planned for me, but I do know that He is calling me right now to discern with the Franciscan Sisters of the Eucharist, and so, like our Blessed Mother Mary at the Annunciation, I am responding with the help of God's grace by giving myself to the formation process in whatever I am called to do.

But we must remember that God calls all of us, each day, to love and serve Him in our own ways - whether great or small.

His call to us is mysterious and is, I believe, a specific language of the heart from His to ours. So we need to continuously strive to be attentive and to listen to God's voice speaking to our hearts, and we can learn this heart language by staying close to Him in prayer and in the Sacraments.

How do you distinguish between a coincidence and a sign from God? That's a tough question that I pray I have enough spiritual and temporal wisdom to answer. I would say that with God, there are no coincidences - that God, as I mentioned, is always at work in us, trying to speak to us, and therefore designs our lives in ways that are often beyond our comprehension. With that being said, I believe that we must also carefully discern what we perceive as signs from God to see what He is truly trying to say to us and to show us. And I think that this kind of discernment must be done in prayer and in conversation with God and with another person in whom you trust and who shares the same faith, whether that be a family member, teacher, counsellor, spiritual director or advisor, youth leader or a friend. I think it is also important to take your time in prayer

decision in haste, and to be in a healthy emotional and spiritual state of both mind and heart when it is time to act. A decision made under these conditions and circumstances will instill within your heart and your mind a sense of peace that comes from God alone.

Why did you choose the Franciscan spiritual pathway?

In various ways, I think Franciscan spirituality chose me as much as I chose it. When the questions of religious life began to surface in my heart and in my mind, I didn't really know much about the different spiritualities - Franciscan, Dominican, Benedictine, Salesian, Carmelite, etc. And to be honest, it was overwhelming to think about and to try to begin figuring out where God was calling me. I attended a discernment retreat in March of 2018 put on by FIAT, our Archdiocese's Women Discernment Group, and had the opportunity to meet with Religious Sisters from a few Communities. But after speaking with Sister Angela Marie Castellani, FSE at the end of the retreat and spending time with her and the Sisters at the FSE convent in East Vancouver, it became very clear that my heart was drawn to Franciscan spirituality and that Franciscan spirituality was speaking to my heart. St. Francis of Assisi, who founded the Franciscan Order, sought to make God known to all through creation. He related to and was a steward of created matter in ways that deepened His love for God and for the Church. Like St. Francis, I have also related to and cared for created matter in many ways throughout my life, having worked as a veterinary assistant and then at the UBC Farm, and obtaining a Master's degree in Agriculture. And so, unbeknownst to me until a couple of years ago, Franciscan spirituality seems to have always resonated with me.

I'm very grateful for and blessed with my family (which includes both my biological family and my Community), my loving and supportive friends, my faith and especially the freedom to live and practice my faith on a daily basis.

I'm also very grateful for the blessing of the call to the priesthood and religious life, as it is such a gift from God to the Church, and a witness to His redemptive and abundant love for all of us.

What advice do you have for LFA students?

I would say to be truly open to God's will and to His call, whatever it may be and to discern that call well - deeply rooted in and reliant upon your faith, with someone you trust who is also rooted in faith and who can speak words of wisdom into your life. Don't feel like you have to have your whole life figured out right now. Sometimes we can get so caught up in making plans for ourselves, which is not a bad thing in itself, but often when we do that, we don't leave room for God to move and work in and through us and to surprise us in ways that are for our good and for His glory.

Pray for the graces to be open to God's will for you, which is ultimately what we should desire above all else, and allow the Holy Spirit to animate you and endow you with His gifts to be able to fulfill the will of God and to walk along the path that He has chosen for you.

The “LFA Bucket List”

Life goes by fast, but I did not realize this truth until the end of Grade 11. I could not fathom the idea of going into Senior Year and then entering “real” life. I felt like I rushed my four years of high school and didn’t do anything memorable. This is when I created the LFA “Before-I-Graduate Bucket List.” This list is filled with big and small tasks I would want to accomplish before I leave the halls of LFA to make my final year here unforgettable. Now, although some of these things may seem small and rather insignificant, they have been a major highlight of my high school experience.

I’m sure most of you have heard about the tunnels underneath the school. A lot of people don’t believe that they exist. Well, I am living proof to confirm that these secret tunnels are indeed real, and I had the opportunity last year to visit them, which was the experience of a LIFETIME! They were just as exciting as I thought they would be. How many students can say that they visited their school’s underground tunnels? Not many! Walking past the Boiler Room in Grade 8 and 9, I was always fascinated with what it contained. It looked like the doors to some mystical secret dungeon, and, of course, this curiosity made me want to see what was inside. On the secret tour of LFA (which was the prize for Spirit Week last year), we went inside the Boiler Room, and I was honestly pretty disappointed because behind those doors wasn’t a magical cave of sorts like I was expecting. But, overall, it was still a great experience either way, and the most crucial part is that I crossed another thing off my bucket list.

Besides this example, I had many other things on this list that I have completed or have hoped to achieve. Unfortunately, my goal of completing this entire bucket list was put to a stop due to COVID-19. When this hit me, I had a realization—a very important one, at that—that I would like to share with all of you, especially those of you that aren’t graduating. You only have so much time to be a high school student, and it goes by faster than you think. As shown by the Class of 2020, you never know when something will be taken away from you. So my question is, why wait to achieve something? Why push your dreams and goals into the future when you can take steps to reach them now? Even though I am unable to complete my “Before I Graduate Bucket List,” there is one last thing I can check off: and that is to publish something in the Globe and Halo.

Mission accomplished.

Five minutes later and you’re dressed in black Walking a route you’ve done 4 times previous Raising money, achieving the goal.

Blink and time flashes by again, almost too far as now the seniors are dressed as seniors.

We rally at Eve’s house,

Yes, we will be missing multiple milestones Boat cruise, the Chan Centre, final assembly, candle rose Seemed to have vanished at our very fingertips.

Our last few months were meant to be cherished, Not sitting in a chair at home

Costumes of Barbie, Dorothy and Guy Fieri Dancing through the night.

It is tough to finish strong in such a weakening time.

On Encounter we cried and grew from one another, sprouted friendships with those who have surrounded us for years.

Home for the holidays we hugged old friends, And Christmas we spent at our homesteads.

A beautiful start to our final school year.

However, those 95 girls who began the journey 8 months ago are still here, They may not be physically together, but they are a unit They have been an unbreakable force for 5 years They will continue to lead, learn and love.

The second half of this year is not quite as pretty.

It began with exams, Stressful yet satisfying to complete our last set.

Little did we know.

Because, you see, between all the blinks and repetitive ticks of the clock, There were moments.

Laughing, crying, cheering, sighing, Every emotion one could imagine flooded through their veins.

Unforgettable and extraordinary experiences.

Let us not allow our physical distance make us distant Let us continue to be the spunky and spectacular family we have become.

For now we are in our homes, The only place where we can exist and learn for indefinitely

My dream is to walk across the stage with you girls, Cap and gown, and our lovely white shoes, Marching together, with pride in our eyes.

I still intend for my dream, our dream to become a reality.

Chloe Law, Steph Isip, Rianna Talento, and I made a bad decision to skip Walkathon and instead go to Honolulu Coffee right next to the Arbutus path. We were joking about Admin catching us when Mrs. Bryde comes in and confronts us. As punishment, Mrs. Little made us wear latex gloves and sort the compost bins after lunch to make sure everybody threw it into the right category. Truly an iconic moment but don’t make our same mistake, everyone!

SHE DO BE GOING THROUGH IT

One time in Religion we were having a deep conversation that got emotional because we all realized as seniors we would be leaving each other soon. I was ugly crying with everyone while talking about how proud I was of everyone, how much I loved them and how they helped me grow as a person, when like one of those kumbaya moments, I wipe my face and my hand comes back with blood.

My nose had started bleeding because of how hard I was crying. Once I realized, everyone started laughing and Mrs. Clarke tried to reassure me that it was fine while I was simultaneously crying and bleeding out of my nose. I actually looked crazy.

In Grade 9 English, Jessica Dingle, Trisha-Mae Capistrano and I were choreographing our fight scene for Romeo and Juliet in the courtyard one day after school. Trisha charged me with her sword and I lunged forward to stab her but I lost my balance and nearly got split open by the stone bench. I genuinely don't know how I fell so dramatically without getting injured. Thankfully Jess caught it on video so I can rewatch it endlessly.

FIRST IMPRESSION

On the first day of Grade 8 orientation we were playing games in the auditorium and getting to know each other. I ran up the stairs to go answer a question and fell face first in front of the whole grade/staff.

In French 12, I once tried to say in French that if I could be any animal, I would be a koala. However, I didn’t know the French word for koala so I asked Madame Chies what it was. She responded in French that it was the “même mot”, meaning “same word”, as in English. However, I misunderstood and repeated my answer replacing the word koala with “même mot” instead of keeping it as koala. If everyone burst out laughing and I was so confused as to why. I later found out in full confidence that I said in French, “If I could be any animal I would be a same word.”

CASSIDY CHOW

It was last block Math on Valentine’s Day. Ava Macfarlane gave me two minty fruity candies and I was sucking on them as I was doing my homework. I later had a question so I walked to Ms. Komad’s desk for help. As she was explaining the answer, I interjected with a question and the two large candies fell straight out of my mouth and rolled onto her desk. She stared in disgust at them while I turned red with embarrassment and laughing out loud awkwardly.

She told me she’d retrieve them later and continued helping people while my large, salivated candies were lying peacefully on her desk waiting to be disposed of. Lesson learned: never talk and eat two pieces of candy at the same time.

L'IDIOT FRANÇAIS

In Grade 10 French, I was goofing off with Amelia Wallace during a lesson when Madame St. Arnaud stopped her lesson, turned to us and said in french “Mimi and Rachel, please stop talking”. I barely heard her, but I could tell she had spoken to us. By now it was silent and the whole class was staring at us. I figured she had asked us a question about what we were learning so I then said politely “Can you repeat the question?” Then everyone burst out laughing and I had no idea why. My famous response is now a big inside joke with my friends.

ATTENDANCE

One time in Math 10 during attendance, I asked my friends to say “present” instead of “here” to sound really pretentious but after the first 3 “presents” Mrs. Komad got mad and told us to stop. I never meant to annoy her but I could not stop laughing after. We still talk about that moment to this day.

THE INFAMOUS PIGEON

In grade 9 we read a poem about pigeons and Mrs. Mills made us practice pigeon impersonations and apparently mine was pretty good so I was asked to perform it in front of the class which was a little embarrassing but fine nevertheless. Months later, during the MUN practice simulation, I went up in front of everyone to receive an award when Mrs. Mills said something along the lines of “Oh, it's the pigeon girl! Give us your pigeon impression!”. I didn’t want to look lame by saying no so I bravely did my flawless pigeon walk in front of that packed cafe of MUN students and leaders, I even did the pigeon sounds. On the outside I was laughing and smiling but internally I was screaming and wanted the earth to swallow me whole. It didn’t end here though. During the Spain MUN trip Mrs. Mills asked me for another pigeon performance for everyone to see, which I obliged to despite the shame it brought me and my ancestors. At this point I have really just embraced this side of me. My mastery of the ways of the pigeon is still my biggest flex to this day.

When I was in Grade 8 I had to perform a skit for the Medieval feast.

My friend made me laugh so hard that I peed my pants. Yup, I peed my pants in front of 96 students. When someone pointed out the stain on my costume I said I had sat in apple juice but really it was my pee.

In Chemistry 11, I had once stayed up all night doing schoolwork and had a chem test the next day. As I was writing it I fell asleep three times and I think Mr. Wilkie had to wake me up twice.

To recall the most iconic prayer project EVER to grace the halls of LFA, Allison Kuzyk, Emily Livingstone, and Kelly Ma created history by making Monkey Ma’s mixtape If You’re Reading This, Go to Church.

Through long nights, Kelly Ma managed to formulate an album like no other, burning CDs and creating CD covers for the sake of this prayer project. As time continues to prevail, may this moment live for centuries and onwards.

There was a work period during my English Zoom call so I thought I had enough time to grab something to eat while leaving my camera on. I ended up being gone for 15 minutes and Mrs. Mills called my mom asking where I was!

My mom got me back on the Zoom call and I made up an excuse because I too embarrassed to tell her the truth.

In Drama 9, we had to create our own musical by using songs from other musicals. Ours was about a dysfunctional family preparing for a wedding, and I starred as the ugly old homewrecker who was trying to seduce the groom to be (played by Sam Zastre) and break up the wedding. There was a scene where I had to walk seductively around and sit on Sam’s lap and sing “Once Upon a Dream” from Maleficent as she sat in a chair looking uncomfortable. One day we were practicing in the cafe and part way through the song, MR. ST CYR WALKED IN!! so I immediately stopped singing and everyone kinda froze. THEN HE PULLED UP A CHAIR AND MADE ME FINISH THE PERFORMANCE AS HE WATCHED!!

So mortifying.

i walked into the room and saw you. you looked peaceful as if you were in a deep sleep with no sign of pain distorting your features. a face i hadn’t seen in a long time. your body was there but i knew your soul was somewhere in a faraway place the mechanical whirring was deafening but it drowned out the sounds of our sorrow you are claustrophobic weren’t you claustrophobic? i stood staring at the empty spot on your bed a spot that you used to fill with your presence half expecting you to walk in again it’s strange how i can’t reach you anymore you can’t hear me i can’t see you and i’m finally old enough to understand something like this but i still can’t process it because it feels so surreal. life is transient. i regret leaving words left unsaid memories left unmade smiles left unshared if you could read this from wherever you are i would say thank you and i’m sorry one day your once familiar features may dissipate into hazy memories i’ll be frustrated at myself for being unable to recall the sound of your voice but i will always remember that last image of you and i will remember how your hands were clutched together holding the rose that i put there. you always did love flowers.

Stuck in the unseen village are the people with the bony eyes.

“Hug me with your words,” they begged, longing for the silent middle ground.

“Evoke within me a place where the stories collide, because where I live, the streets are convoluted.

Our desiccated land leaves no place to rest.

The unknown is known to us.

‘How pitiful!’ We scream at night, beseeching for solitude.

The back of our thighs blaze from sitting on the crate the devil delivered.

Throats burn from the acid that was poured into our glass, and once we were legless, he borrowed us.

He skinned our velvet flesh, then provided us with paper to dry the tears he created.

And although we ran away, the wickedness is laminated in our history.

A trail of shattered glass takes us back when the sun sets every night.

A wandering mind finds these secrets, loathes them, and wishes for the illusion to be untrue.

Our homes are our own, but there are footprints tracked along the diamond encrusted marble.

Elegant, golden frames paint the preserved happenings.

In this village, monuments are built on unsteady foundations.

Even now, we continue to walk on these grounds.

Relentlessly sifting through the ashes, finding pieces of our community within, and leaving our fingertips gritty with the souls of our old self.

Rewrite our antiquity and save us from despair.

Protect us from the bloodborne illness that plagues our senses.

We wish for mental freedom, a resemblance of hope.

Bring us tales of angels.”

Swan Song Like children, we used to toddle.

When we first met, we stuttered and studied our shoes And struggled to remember each new name (First and last? One day, we awoke to find that we had outgrown our clothes.

Our old notebooks were full And our pencils had been replaced with pens.

Try as we might to cling to this precipice This chapter of our lives is coming to an end.

Tomorrow, we start again somewhere new Nervous and naive like children once more— And this time, the stories that we write will be our own.

But hand in hand, for one last moment, we sing.

A fond reminiscence on the children we were A heartfelt thank you to the ones who helped us grow A cursing of the passage of time A lamentation for the place we’ll leave behind And a celebration of the ties that bind.

Little By Little A figure looms tall over a small boy, his dark hair falls over his eyes. They stand at the corner of a busy street under a lamplight.

“Are you tired?”

A pair of large brown eyes meet his. “I don’t know you, sir.

Mum says I can’t speak to strangers.”

The young man grins. “We can’t be strangers if I know you, right Tommy?”

Tommy’s eyebrows lower, and he flashes a toothy grin.

“Okay, but don’t kidnap me.”

The figure straightens. “Do you want to come somewhere with me?”

“Can we go to the park, please? Mum always buys the food there.” Tommy jumps in excitement.

The young man holds out his hand for the boy to take. “Sure, I love it there.”

The young man reflects upon another answer to give. “I’m going to tell you something. It might not make sense, but can you try to understand for me?”

Tommy nods his head quickly.

“You’re going to be okay.”

“Huh?” “Keep smiling, keep running. Don’t stop, and don’t look back unless you want to see how far you’ve come.” He pauses. “You can reach any star in this galaxy, in this universe.”

A blank expression sits on the boy’s face. “How do you know I can make it?”

“You have a dream don’t you?” Asks the man.

Tommy throws his hands up, “Of course I do.”

“Good.”

They stop once more at a bench. The young man motions for Tommy to sit.

The two walk through the park. Flowers of all colours line “Mr. Sir?” the paths, as towering trees filter beams of light through.

“Yes?” Tommy tilts his head up and stares at the young man beside “Did you make it?” Tommy asks. him. It is as if he stares into a mirror.

The man runs his hand through his hair nervously. “Why do The man stares back. He asks again, “Are you tired?” you think I’m telling you this?”

Tommy scrunches his face up. “No! I never get tired.”

“Because you want to help me?”

“You’re so strong.” The figure then asks a question he “No, because I reached the galaxies.” already knows the answer to. “What were you doing under “Mr. Sir?” Tommy asks. “Did you run on the pavement?” the light?”

The man nods. “Yes. Even fell many times.”

Tommy kicks at the rocks that scatter on the pavement.

Tommy leans forward. “What was your dream?”

“When it’s not night time, the stars disappear,” he says.

“I wanted to wear expensive clothes and watches, and drive “So you ran towards the light because it looked like a star?” expensive cars. But, I also wanted to make mum proud.”

Tommy’s eyes remain down. “Yeah. But, it’s the same thing. Tommy’s smile widens. “We have the same dream!”

No matter how much I run, I can’t reach it. Can I ask you a “Now, I have that and so much more.” The young man gives question, Mr. Sir?” Tommy one last look before he stands up. “It’s time for me to The young man smiles, “Go ahead.” go now, mum will be waiting.”

Tommy sighs. “What if I can’t reach it?”

The figure turns to cross the street back at the spot where The young man thinks before answering. This question is they had met. Before he is able to do so, he is halted by a small one he did not prepare for. hand on the sleeve of his coat.

A minute passes.

Tommy is quiet at first, but eventually says. “Will you walk “Mr. Sir?” with me?”

The young man stops walking, points to his own cheek, and Expecting this to happen, the man agrees. “Sure.” smiles. “Can you smile for me?”

“How should we walk?” He asks.

Tommy searches the man’s face for answers. He begins with “Little by little,” answers the man. a closed-lip grin, and it grows into a wide, pearly smile.

“For how long?”

Keep smiling.” The young man laughs. He sighs in relief and “Until forever.” continues to walk, “Don’t ever stop. It’s beautiful.”

“How long is forever, sir?”

Mr. Sir?” The boy asks, confused. “How can this help me “Even after you reach the stars.”

CONVALESCENCE the doctor tore the curtain open,

By Amara Camacho (12-2) revealing me, a fragile, breakable shell of a person. with his eyes engrossed on the clipboard, failing to see me as a being instead of an object to fix. he’s speaking to the paper again, elucidating the complications that he found. he never met my eye. half listening, I sat up from the stiff, white linen, covered bed, careful not to make an obnoxious sound, though it wasn’t difficult, only weighing a buck 10 soaking wet.

I cleared my throat. he looked up, the first time since he arrived, and there was that pity in the grey of his pupils.

“Hi,” I say. he had a bewildered look on his face but responded nonetheless with, “Hello”.

I just look at him, a little dazed, but long enough for him to see that I’m still conscious, breathing, presenting every single hint I could silently give, that I’m still alive.
