iscal Year 2010 was indeed a fruitful year as we celebrated our 50th Anniversary. Though many organizations faced significant challenges, we were able to overcome ours with the support of people like you.

We rolled out our largest awareness and acquisition campaign in 50 years acquiring many new friends and donors while educating hundreds of thousands of community members about the prevalence of developmental disabilities; produced a 13-week cable TV program—the only live autism awareness show in Chicago—giving us a potential reach to more than 1 million viewers; refreshed our logo and brand; and much, much more.

With donor dollars, we gathered 200 volunteers in the Chicago area and in less than six hours we built one of the first playgrounds uniquely designed for and by children with autism. The playground addresses sensory processing disorders and stimulates healthy growth and development of children on the autism spectrum. This playground now serves as another installment in our goal to build on, and strengthen our therapeutic community approach. It will cement our place as a national leader in our care planning and service delivery model for children and adults with disabilities.

We renovated and dedicated the Dorothy Rose Center for Horticulture providing first-rate therapies and vocational opportunities to our adults. In May, we also opened the first-ever Center for Health & Wellness in the Chicago area providing on-site primary healthcare and oral care to individuals with disabilities.

Formed with the goal of improving the health, wellness and overall quality of life of the Little City Foundation community, the Center fostered an organized and systematic effort to include health education and assurance of primary healthcare services, oral health, nutrition, recreation and clinical/behavior health services.

So far, we’ve saved the federal and state government tens of thousands of dollars on unnecessary emergency room visits as well as undoubtedly improved the quality of life of hundreds of “our people.”

This calendar year, we also recently opened a state-of-the art Fitness Center as well as our very first teen CILA (Community Integrated Living Arrangement) home making it the 16th Little City operated home in Cook and DuPage County.

We fought for the rights of our most vulnerable citizens and hosted a political forum with other like-minded agencies and queried 15 legislative candidates and gubernatorial representatives on their position on issues important to people with disabilities and their families. Earlier this year, as Governor Pat Quinn prepared to address Illinois with his ideas on how to reform the state budget, Little City hosted an advocacy event in Springfield and spoke to numerous legislators, state agency representatives and advocates to ensure appropriated funds and the rights of individuals with autism and other intellectual and developmental disabilities were protected.

With the generosity of people like you, we’ve continued to host our holiday parties for our children and adults, community outings, prom nights, Special Olympics, and much more that truly helps to create hope, change lives and challenge the limits placed on our most vulnerable citizens.

We even brought back our once popular Fashion Show Benefit and hosted our first Walk-a-thon as we continuously and responsibly strived to develop effective and innovative fundraising opportunities.

This is just a small glimpse into our world, and though we’ve accomplished a lot this past year, we’re nowhere near done.

Little City B Y T H E N U M B E R S • 80 percent of children in Little City’s ChildBridge Residential Program have pervasive developmental disabilities, including autism, Asperger Syndrome and other pervasive diagnoses on the autism spectrum.

• Little City supports more than 350 children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities throughout Chicago and its surrounding communities.

• Little City’s Center for the Arts owns more than 50 awards for its innovative programs.

• Little City provides 24x7 care for 175 adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities through its LifePath Adult Residential Services.

• Little City provides 24x7 care for 50 children with intellectual and developmental disabilities at its 56-acre Palatine campus through its ChildBridge Residential Program.

• Little City offers first-class foster care and adoption placement services for 120 children who are born with intellectual and developmental disabilities through its Childbridge Community Services program in Chicago.

• Little City owns and operates 15 community-based, group homes (including one for teens) to provide more than 100 of Illinois’ most vulnerable citizens with a true neighborhood living environment.

• More than 400 employees work at Little City to serve the most vulnerable among us.

• Little City has provided first-class, therapeutic programs and services since October 1, 1959 -- more than 50 years.

• Little City must raise an average of $10,000*/ individual/year to maintain the quality of life desired for each child and adult at Little City. Beyond the state required minimal standard of care, Little City’s quality-of-life standard encompasses programs and services that foster a life of health, recreation, education and culture that protect one’s rights, beliefs, choices and aspirations.* *The shortfall is due primarily to less than full reimbursement from the State of Illinois for services rendered, but also due to Little City’s commitment to a quality of life.

Filling the Gap For more than 50 years, Little City has provided innovative programs and services that foster development and personal fulfillment for its participants. To do so, Little City relies on government funding and direct contributions from individuals, corporations and foundations.

In fact, more than 82 cents of every dollar directly supports first-class programs and services for hundreds of children and adults in need.

Little City must raise an average of $10,000/individual/year* to maintain the quality of life desired for each child and adult at Little City. Beyond the state-required minimal standard of care, Little City’s quality-of-life standard encompasses programs and services that foster a life of health, recreation, education and culture that protect one’s rights, beliefs, choices and aspirations.* *The shortfall is due primarily to less than full reimbursement from the State of Illinois for services rendered, but also due to Little City’s commitment to a quality of life.
