A Letter from the Executive Director & Board President Dear Friends, Family and Supporters, If there was a common denominator in 2015, it was the extraordinary support of one loyal friend after another, together, multiplying the ability of Little City to advance our benchmark programs and services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The sum total of your giving spirit, ingenuity and huge hearts provided countless success stories and opportunities that helped elevate and strengthen our vital and vibrant community. Matching The Coleman Foundation grant of $500,000 will help build the third of six slated homes in the Duffey Family Children’s Village. Construction is scheduled to begin in late Spring 2016. Funding for the fourth home is already solidly underway. Launching Empower Workforce Solutions, a unique mission-driven company serving the entire Chicagoland

area, specializing in hiring individuals covered under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), will add an income stream that will help support and sustain Little City. As we reflect on 2015, this annual report can only illustrate a fraction of the number of positive ways you have helped us define and refine Little City. We deeply appreciate the overwhelming generosity of your time, treasure and talents. They have added immeasurably to the individuals and their families who call Little City home. In calculating our needs for the future, with an unending goal to make tomorrow better than today, we’re counting on arithmetic – simple addition – to meet and exceed our dreams for the brightest future possible: “You and me.” These words are especially poignant because they came from a Little City resident. Chil dBridge Center for Education In 2011, Little City’s therapeutic day school opened its doors and welcomed four students. Today its size, resources and student capacity have multiplied exponentially. Little City’s ChildBridge Center for Education provides the right formula to allow its students to flourish, offering progressive services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, as well as students with severe and profound needs on the autism spectrum. Thanks to an extensive renovation and expansion that was completed this past year, the school increased its student capacity from 20 to 50 students. By doubling in size from 5,000 square feet to over 10,000 square feet, five new classrooms were added along with a life skills lab, vocational lab, library/media center, two therapy rooms and a sensory gym.

Classes are small with teacher and instructional support staff for elementary, middle and high school. The curriculum is customized to meet the needs of individual students and includes academic, functional academic, life skills and transitional programming. The school’s primary focus is on the educational, therapeutic and life skills areas that most directly affect each student. This program is uniquely designed to provide an environment that concentrates on enhancing communication, social and development skills and to help each child reach their full potential. A typical day for each student includes a host of activities, both inside and outside of the classroom. Student N. Vincent is a sophomore at the ChildBridge Center for Education and has shown remarkable growth this past year. Initially reluctant to make eye contact or interact with fellow students and staff, he now engages with his friends and is quickly building healthy relationships. Vincent participates in high school pre-vocational classes. He can now follow three-step instructions and does exceptionally well with Community Sign comprehension, wiping tables and stacking chairs. He particularly enjoys sensory objects and takes great joy in sharing. Karrie Dean, Administrator at the day school, says that “Vincent is a wonderful student who has brought his own unique style to the Center for Education. I am excited to see the progress he has made so far, and where he is going next.”

Led by Karrie Dean, a National Board Certified Teacher, Little City’s day school is approved by the Illinois State Board of Education. The school provides comprehensive educational services and therapies including computer-based instruction, assistive technology devices and augmentative communication instruction (such as PECS, AAC devices and adaptive apps.)

Center for Fitness & Recreation Little City’s recreation program provides opportunities and classes that strategically target the physical health and mental well-being of the individuals we serve ---all factors adding up to a better quality of life for each participant. Recently renovated, the Ethel B. and Joel H. Sharenow Center for Fitness and Recreation includes a movie theater, game room, fitness center with equipment specifically designed for children and adults with disabilities and a pool with a wheelchair lift. In 2015, Little City added a new indoor golf center led by former LPGA tour professional and PGA certified instructor, Mary Dwyer. This facility features a stateof-the-art putting green and practice bays for Little City golfers to learn the game and refine their skills. Fitness, recreation and Special Olympics training

programs afford individuals valuable opportunities for team involvement, good sportsmanship and improved social skills. Added together, these activities equal a healthy atmosphere for participants to challenge themselves and explore activities in a safe, enjoyable and structured environment. Little City athletes compete in ten sports, where individuals are encouraged to increase their performance abilities while improving their health and wellness. The Special Olympics provide both adult and youth athletes the opportunity to compete on a grand stage. The program promotes physical fitness and an opportunity for all participants to grow and nurture friendships in a team environment within the Special Olympics community. Known throughout Little City and the community as an accomplished artist, participant Tony LaPorte is also a competitive athlete. A gold medal powerlifter, Tony has powerfully bench pressed 110 pounds and dead lifted 170 pounds. Although a medical condition kept him from participating in this year’s Special Olympics, with the help of Little City staff, Tony has lost 20 pounds and his health is now back on track. Tim Lahart, Director of Fitness and Recreation at Little City, says “The positive physical outcomes of fitness and recreation for Tony and all of our participants are easy to identify. It is the increased self-motivation and social interaction which allows each individual to learn more about their own potential and natural limits that is beyond measure.” Tim Lahart (left) has worked with Tony LaPorte in the fitness program since 2010. He has continued to challenge Tony in reaching his personal fitness goals through a variety of sports and activities.

The Dorothy Rose Horticulture Center Through hands-on gardening and learning in workshops, it’s beautiful to see the numerous benefits that bloom within every Little City participant. The horticulture program at Little City has helped develop numerous skills through gardening and landscaping workshops held in two greenhouses and throughout Little City’s 56-acre campus. The Dorothy Rose Horticulture Center enables individuals to gain experience through four main teaching aspects: general horticulture skills, the life cycle of plants, care and maintenance of indoor plants and outdoor gardening. Classes are led by Little City’s Horticulture Manager with assistance by Master Gardeners from the University of Illinois Extension Program. Indoor and outdoor seasonal classes include: introduction to horticulture (skill-based

learning); outdoor gardening of vegetables, fruits, herbs and flowers; succulents and cacti; horticulture therapy; herbs; growing vegetables indoors; and raised bed and container gardening. Furthermore, classes include instruction in planting, maintenance and safety. Participants have full involvement in the planning, planting and care of two fields in which they grow vegetables, fruits, herbs and flowers. Raised bed gardens allow individuals who use wheelchairs or other mobility devices access to fully participate in the planting and care of plants. Participants work in a team environment to maintain a garden and engage in social interaction with volunteers. One of the most rewarding aspects of harvesting is that the participants are able to share, eat and enjoy the vegetables, fruits and herbs they grow in the gardens. The Dorothy Rose Horticulture Center recently underwent an extensive renovation, which was generously funded by the Rose/Hockfield Family Trust. The updated facility features several enhancements including a new roof, lighting, flooring, a commercial sink, seed starting equipment and digital environmental controls for the glass greenhouses. While there are many obvious cosmetic and structural updates, participants and instructors primarily appreciate the addition of a large commercial sink. The sink allows for the recycling of plant containers and being able to immediately wash the freshly harvested produce. Dee Sams, Little City’s Horticulture Manager, most enjoys the social interaction and hands-on participation that the Center provides. “Involvement is voluntary, which shows that the residents truly enjoy being here,” Dee states. “I love answering everyone’s questions and take great joy in witnessing the many benefits this therapeutic environment provides our residents.”

Corporate & Individual Volunteers Whether as a corporate group or an individual, the common denominator is the same ---volunteering not only gives back and supports those in need, it also boosts camaraderie while helping the community at large. This past year was an exceptional one having brought together more than 1300 volunteers with the common goal of supporting Little City. Whether volunteers were enthusiastically supporting walkers at the 5th Annual Hot Chocolate Walk or beautifying Little City’s campus and community-integrated homes through painting, landscaping and gardening, the devotion and generosity was abundant and inspiring. In one way or another, all of our volunteers help enrich the lives of Little City’s participants. In Spring 2015, over 60 volunteers from Discover worked to rebuild a state-of-the-art KaBOOM! interactive play

area, specially designed for children with disabilities, on Little City’s campus. To provide maximum safety and protection, the team also installed SMARTE Safety Surfacing consisting of layers of rubber mulch ‘pillows’ made from recycled tires. Foster Care & Adoption Program For over 20 years, the primary mission of Little City’s foster care and adoption program has been to provide comprehensive, individualized and community-based treatment to children and their families. As part of our mission, Little City is committed to recruiting and supporting foster/adoptive families to provide safe and loving homes for children with autism, intellectual and developmental disabilities, and emotional or behavioral disorders. The Center for Family & Community-Based Services also provides aid to children in foster care who have been identified by the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (IDCFS) as having been abused or neglected. Our training is tailored to the needs of our foster parents

and the youth served in their homes. Multiply that with our expert case workers, therapists and staff who are available 24/7 to support and assist families with all their needs, and great things happen. One family that has experienced the dedicated support of Little City’s foster care program is the Winters family. Aaron is a dedicated, full-time, loving mom. When her children were first brought to Little City, she fully devoted herself to bringing her family back together. Initially, Aaron was having a difficult time finding adequate housing to meet all of her children’s needs. Unrelenting, she was able to secure a safe and stable home. Through nearly three years of hard work and perseverance, Aaron was able to receive custody of her two children, Kyania (16) and Dayshawn (14,) and they are now all living together with their youngest sibling, Omarion. Dayshawn and Kyania are flourishing. Kyania is enrolled in a private academy and is proudly earning A’s and B’s on her report card. She is incredibly active and ready to take on the world. Kyania is in JROTC and also participates in many after school activities; her favorite is video production. Dayshawn has some special needs, and speaking can be a struggle. However, Aaron has become his number one advocate. She found the perfect school near their home that has an excellent program to support his educational needs. Since moving back home, Dayshawn’s communication skills have grown exponentially, and he is thriving in his family environment. Little City is proud to be an integral part of the Winters family’s success and to witness the loving family bonds that are continuing to grow. Amy Fibich and Stephanie McKeel worked closely with the Winters family during their time at Little City. Amy served as the therapist for the children and their mom, and Stephanie served as Case Management Supervisor.

Center for Employment A job provides so much more than a paycheck. The combination of job coaching, skill building, job readiness, career exploration and industry-specific training is a winning formula for adults with disabilities to find and maintain rewarding employment. Little City’s Center for Employment & Business Opportunities helps individuals take charge of their lives by learning the importance of working and interacting with others, as well as giving them the opportunity to be part of the community. Enhanced skill training highlights include the construction of an assessment room, computer lab and hospitality suite. A new addition is a fully equipped commercial training kitchen. Just like an actual restaurant setting, the concept allows participants to simulate bussing tables, prepping

food, dishwashing and food preparation, the sum of which will help prepare them for entry-level jobs in the food and beverage industry. All of the adults who receive residential services at Little City are supported in one of two employment and training programs. In addition, the program accepts community participants who receive Department of Human Services, Division of Rehabilitation Services (DRS) funding. Kameko is a participant at Little City’s Center for Employment who has benefited from this rewarding program. At 26 years old, she participates in the day programs at Little City. This past year, Kameko found employment at a local Portillo’s, and couldn’t be happier. She works at the restaurant three days a week, and is particularly fond of cleaning tables, wiping trays and talking to customers. In fact, she recently earned a well-deserved tip from a customer for doing such a great job. Maintaining this gratifying job has had a noticeable and positive effect on Kameko. Previously, she was shy and hesitant to interact with people unfamiliar to her. Now that she is able to regularly engage with customers and fellow employees, Kameko has opened up and is much more social. The Center for Employment provides all the support, training and encouragement needed to allow Kameko to have a successful and lasting job. Not only are the benefits limitless for her, but employers obtain the rewards of having a productive and ambitious worker.

The Heritage Society A charitable bequest is one of the easiest ways a person can leave a lasting gift that will have a positive impact not only for tomorrow --- but for many years to come. The Heritage Society was established for those who wish to create an enduring legacy and provide for future generations through provisions that are made in one's estate plan. Little City parents Tim and Nancy Desmond share their passion and vision for the organization, and why they have chosen to put Little City in their will. “Parenting a child with developmental disabilities is challenging. Our son Kevin was a very active child. He would run so much that we couldn’t keep track of him. It was so difficult that we literally had to keep our home wired shut. When Kevin was 8, we began looking for support through an organization

that could offer 24-hour care, supervision and education while providing a safe and healthy quality of life. There were many options, but only until he turned 22. That is the age where many services available to children simply end. We wanted Kevin to be in a community environment that also provided him privacy and a home atmosphere. As our research progressed, we became very discouraged with the limited number of choices that met our needs. Thankfully, we found Little City. Their campus is unique and wonderful, the kind of safe and caring community we were looking for. Kevin lives in his own apartment with 24-hour supervision and support for meals and activities. We are delighted at how Kevin is thriving at Little City, particularly in the opportunities for him to participate and learn in the horticulture program. He is active at the recreation facility where he enjoys fitness and taking part in the Special Olympics. Kevin engages in many programs on campus and in the community through Little City’s transportation services. We are happy to be part of the Little City family and donate regularly to support their wonderful programs, but wanted to take our support to a whole new level. In 2015, we made provisions for Little City in our will and estate plans. It was our desire to ensure that the resources would be available to take great care of Kevin and all his fellow residents. It is our responsibility and an honor to make sure that Little City is here to provide services not only for our son, but for the many lives they will impact in the future.”

Children’s Center for Group-Home Living Home to 50 children, the youth at Little City are provided with a full range of programs and services --- all factors empowering them as they transition into adulthood. Little City’s ChildBridge Center for Group-Home Living is a therapeutic community fostering independence, growth and learning. First-class programs and services are provided for children with autism and other disabilities, including 24/7 residential and clinical care.

Transformational in design, the homes have produced many positive and measurable outcomes, such as an increase in adaptive skills, a decrease in maladaptive behaviors, and an increase in communication and socialization with peers, staff and family members. Furthermore, the homes have implemented a ‘teaching environment’ utilizing research and the expertise of national and international experts in the field of autism.

The hallmark of the children’s residential program is the Duffey Family Children’s Village which will feature six homes designed for children with autism. Two homes have already been completed with a third and fourth home planned to break ground in Spring/Summer 2016. These homes offer therapeutic and sensory-rich environments that offer a best practice foundation for favorable interventions.

Jacob is a 17 year old boy living at Little City since 2008, and who has greatly benefited from moving into Larry’s Home this past year. At the Duffey Family Children’s Village, Larry’s Home serves eight boys with the lowest support needs. Due to a clinical reorganization of the homes, children are now grouped with peers in the same functioning level. As a result of this, Jacob is communicating better, his speech has improved, and he has peer role models who encourage and reinforce positive interactions. One primary focus at Larry’s Home is on preparing youth for transition into adulthood by becoming completely independent. Special attention is paid to details such as doing daily chores, social interaction and how to give others personal space. This new environment has encouraged Jacob to be much more social, and he has come into his own. He enjoys swimming, creating art and riding his bike in the cul-de-sac outside his home. One of the most beneficial features is that each child has his/her own room. Jacob loves to decorate his room, hang pictures and watch his favorite show, “Blue’s Clues.”

Having his own space allows Jacob to self-regulate, and it provides a place where he can decompress and feel safe. The positive impact Larry’s Home has had on Jacob is substantial, and as he grows, we can only imagine that those rewards will continue to multiply. One of Jacob’s favorite activities is being able to ride his bike in the cul-de-sac outside of Larry’s Home.

Financials Since 1959, Little City has provided innovative programs and services that foster development and personal fulfillment for the children and adults it serves. To do so, Little City relies on government funding and direct contributions from individuals, corporations and foundations. In fact, 85 cents of every dollar directly support firstclass programs and services for hundreds of children

and adults in need. Little City must raise an average of $10,000/individual/year* to maintain the quality of life desired for each child and adult at Little City. Beyond the state-required minimal standard of care, Little City’s quality-of-life standards encompass programs and services that foster a life of health, recreation, education and culture that protect one’s rights, beliefs, choices and aspirations.* *The shortfall is due primarily to less than full reimbursement from the State of Illinois for services rendered, but also due to Little City’s commitment to a quality of life.
