Town invites patriotic displays for Fourth of July
In celebration of America’s 250th anniversary, the Town of Oyster Bay is inviting residents to showcase their patriotism and community pride by participating in the Town’s “Red, White & Blue” patriotic decorating initiative. As our nation prepares to commemorate 250 years of American independence, residents are
encouraged to proudly display the colors of our country and honor the values that unite us as Americans. “America’s 250th Anniversary is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to celebrate our nation’s remarkable history and the freedoms we enjoy every day,” said Town Councilwoman Laura Maier. “By deco-
rating our homes and neighborhoods in red, white and blue, we can demonstrate our pride in our country, honor those who have served and sacrificed for our freedom and help inspire a renewed sense of unity and patriotism throughout our community.”

On Friday, July 17, the Syosset Public Library will host its inaugural “Midsummer Night Market,” a new community event inspired by Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The free event will feature family entertainment, food trucks, and live music performed by students and bands from the School of Rock Syosset/Oyster Bay. Jessikah Chautin, the Syosset Public Library’s community engagement specialist and a former board member of the Syosset Woodbury Jericho Chamber of Commerce, attended the chamber’s June 18 general meeting at the Tzu Chi Long Island Educational Center, 50 Underhill Boulevard in Syosset. There, she distributed fliers to attendees and explained how the library developed the concept for what will be its first outdoor summertime community event. The Midsummer Night Market will take place from 4 to 9 p.m. on July 17 at the Syosset Public Library, 225 S. Oyster Bay Road, just north of the Long Island Expressway and Northern State Parkway. In an interview with Litmor Publishing Co. this week, Chautin said the idea grew in part from the success of the library’s popular
Sy-Con comic convention, held every other year, with the next edition scheduled for 2027. “At Sy-Con the Artists’ Alley is hands-down one of the most popular features we have. Our Readers’ Services Librarian Stacey Mencher has organized the vendors for Sy-Con, and those vendors will reach out periodically to ask her if we’re holding ‘another one’ — though SPL really wants to do Sy-Con on a biennial basis (once every other year) to keep it fresh. They also ask if we’re doing some other event. In recent years we have all seen the growth of themed evening markets, offering the communities something a little different — some themes are fairies and fantasy or Gothic....Our staff got together and thought about doing something different at the library after hours — presenting the community a new way to get together, and keeping this open to everybody,” she noted. Another consideration was the popularity of craft fairs and street festivals hosted by local libraries. For Syosset Public Library, that evolved into an outdoor night market in the library’s parking lot. The parking area directly in front of the main entrance, facing S. Oyster Bay Road, will be closed off See page 6
