Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino could barely contain his excitement at the start of Tuesday’s Town Board meeting. The supervisor reflected on a weekend that saw the generosity and kindness Town residents and businesspeople, with record-breaking donations of toys in the United States Marine Corps and Town Board-sponsored, first-ever “Cruise-Thru” Holiday Toy Drive” held Saturday, December 5, at John Burns Park in Massapequa. The Town collected 16,000 donations and officials are very thankful that despite the COVID-19 pandemic and economic challenges so many residents and businesses have grappled with over the last nine months, the 2019 total was shattered with the 2020 Toy Drive. Its total represents the largest single-day Toy Drive collection in all of Long Island, according to Town Supervisor Saladino. “This year we went from 1,900 [donations in 2019] with the Town of Oyster Bay working with the United States Marine Corps, with our talented Town employees -- and under the leadership of people including retired U.S. Marine Corps Major Chuck Kilbride, Town Parks’ Commissioner Joe Pinto as well as Director of Operations Andy Rothstein, and our Town Public Safety team. The TOWN of OYSTER BAY collected over 16,000 toys! This broke ALL records. Let’s just envision the hearts and smiles on the faces of the children in need -- who quite frankly may be in the most difficult circumstances this year due to parents who could have lost their jobs and families in a tough way, with some even dealing with COVID-19 or those losing loved ones. Just think, how much you in the TOWN have warmed their hearts. We as the family here in the TOWN of Oyster Bay want to thank our residents for their tremendous generosity!” the supervisor said during the December 8 Town Board meeting. At the event, Supervisor Saladino (who grew up in Massapequa) was joined by Town Councilman Tom Hand, Town Councilwoman Laura Maier, Town Receiver of Taxes Jeff Pravato as well as Oyster Bay Town Clerk Richard LaMarca. “I thank all our residents of the Town who opened their hearts See page 15
