Seminar on challenges faced by today’s youth

CREATIVE PROBLEM SOLVERS

H.B. Thompson Middle School students Griffin Hon, Katherine Li, and Maggie Liu have been accepted by the Institute of Creative Problem Solving for Gifted and Talented Students at SUNY College at Old Westbury. These students are part of an elite group of 85 students chosen from approximately 500 of the top-ranking math students on Long Island. Selection by the Institute indicates that a student is among the top one-tenth of one percent in math of all students on Long Island in his or her grade. Students accepted into the program will spend 50 hours in class over the course of 20 Saturday mornings studying mathematical and problem-solving topics. Previous Institute graduates have gone on to win prestigious awards, including national and international math, science and engineering contests.

The Town of Oyster Bay will partner with Drug Free Long Island to host a special seminar focusing on preparing for the challenges and temptations in today’s world on Monday, November 19th, at Marjorie Post Park in Massapequa. The seminar, run by guest speaker Kym Laube, director of HUGS (Human Understanding & Growth Services) will serve as a primer course for participants to learn and be prepared for the conversation, challenges, and temptations faced by today’s youth when it comes to things like smoking, vaping, alcohol abuse, and abuse of controlled substances, and how to recognize signs and symptoms that can lead to addiction. Admission to the seminar is free, with pre-registration requested through info@drugfreeli.org (attendance is still possible even if you do not register). Doors open at 7:15PM, with the program beginning at 7:30PM on Monday, November 19th. Parents and children are welcome, as this seminar is a means to learn about awareness, advocacy, and empowerment. For further information, call (516) 203-7486.

Town of Oyster Bay collects gifts for Toys for Tots

Oyster Bay Town Councilman Anthony D. Macagnone joined with Town Councilman Thomas P. Hand to announce the annual kick-off of this year’s Toys for Tots Collection Drive, which will run through December 13th, in an effort to collect new, unwrapped toys to be used as gifts for children throughout the community. “Under the direction of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, the Toys for Tots Drive follows a mission to help ensure that disadvantaged children within our community do not have to go the holiday season without something to bring them happiness,” Councilman Hand said.

“By helping those in need experience the wonderful embrace of the holiday season, contributors will get to play an active role in bringing happiness to one of our nation’s most valuable resources for the future, our children,” Councilman Macagnone said. For those who wish to donate to Toys for Tots, collection boxes can be found in the following Town facilities:

• Department of Public Works Facility (150 Miller Place, Syosset); • The Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center (at Bethpage Community Park - 1001 Stewart Avenue, Bethpage); and • Syosset-Woodbury Community Park Community Center (Jericho Turnpike, Woodbury).

• Oyster Bay Town Hall North (54 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay); • Town Hall South (977 Hicksville Road, Massapequa);

For more information, please contact the councilmembers, co-chairs of the Collection Drive, at (516) 624-6619 or (516) 624-6305; or visit www.oysterbaytown. com.
