Town seeds harbor with millions of clams, oysters
From right, Supervisor Joseph Saladino Town Councilman Lou Imbroto and Town Clerk Rich LaMarca seed Oyster Bay Harbor with millions of clam and oyster seedlings, helping to replenish the harbor and improve water quality
Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, Councilman Lou Imbroto and Town Clerk Richard LaMarca recently took to the waters on the Town’s north shore to help replenish the clam and oyster supply in Oyster Bay Harbor. The officials completed the seeding of approximately three million clam and 250,000 oyster seedlings. “Oyster Bay Harbor is one of the crown jewels of Oyster Bay, and I’m proud to say that under my administration we are now doing more than ever before to improve its water quality,” said Supervisor Saladino. “These seedlings, many of which were grown right in our new hatchery, are placed into closed public waters where they are protected from being harvested until they are fully grown. Councilman Imbroto noted that shellfish filter up to 50 gallons of water a day through their feeding process, so the preservation of Oyster Bay Harbor's water quality through the repopulation of shellfish is an important component of making the water cleaner for swimming, fishing, boating, and all life in the Harbor. “This seeding initiative improves water quality, bolsters the local economy and improves the resiliency of our coastal communities by restoring shellfish populations to the harbor,” Councilman Imbroto said. “These efforts help preserve the natural beauty of our local waterways for generations to come.” Town Clerk Rich LaMarca added, “The Town has already transferred millions upon millions of clam and oyster seeds from our hatchery into local waterways. Thanks to the diligence of our staff in the Department of Environmental Resources, as well as our Bay Constable team, we are ensuring that our harbor remains replenished and protected.”
