HAPPY HALLOWEEN

BY RIKKI MASSAND As winter approaches, opportunities to participate in community charitable efforts and welcoming events abound at Syosset’s Faith Lutheran Church at 231 Jackson Avenue. On Saturday morning, November 16 from 8:30 to 11 a.m. Faith Lutheran Church will open its doors for a free Community Pancake Fest, “allyou-can-eat” with a silent auction and donations accepted. The following day, on Sunday November 17, beginning at 4 p.m. Faith Lutheran Church will be the host venue for the Interfaith Clergy Council of Syosset and Woodbury’s annual Thanksgiving celebration, also an open, free community event. The Interfaith Council is a local coalition formed to embrace diversity and maintain an open dialogue between leaders, congregants and youth from different faiths. The group consists of rabbis, imams, Christian priests and other faith leaders and is chaired by Rabbi Jay Weinstein of Congregation Simchat HaLev. Faith Lutheran Church in Syosset is also organizing a Christmas concert for Friday evening December 13, with a theme of “Christmas songs from Hollywood Hits.” The church’s music program is led by professional Vocal Music coach Travis Bloom, and the December 13 concert will feature “Travis & Friends.” Pastor Rebecca Sheridan is the new pastor at Faith Lutheran Church, coming on-board after the congregation continued over the last two years without a See page 8

New Woodbury business zones in on wellness BY RIKKI MASSAND

The Robert Seaman Elementary School recently held its annual Fall Festival. Students, families and staff enjoyed games, face painting, activities and raffles. See page 10.

On Tuesday, November 19 from 5 to 8 p.m. the new SuperSlow Zone of Woodbury at 315 Crossways Park Drive will welcome the community to attend a “Bone Density Open House." Super Slow Zone is part of an international-brand of Wellness Centers offering 1:1 personal strength instruction in 20-minute-long high intensity training (HIT) sessions. Super Slow Zone offers a “Strong Bone Program” that prevents and can reverse the damaging effects of Osteopenia and Osteoporosis. A third program is offered as well, “Lower A1C [Type II Diabetes] Breakthrough Program”. There are supporting services, available on the premises, such as a nurse practitioner who provides counseling and pharmaceutical management; massage; Reiki; nutrition management, and more. Steven Goodkin is the owner and franchisee of the SuperSlow Zone of Woodbury, and he says his aim is to help people working and living in the area by treating both body and mind. For the past 21 years Jericho has been the Goodkin family’s home base, with Steven’s twin 15-year-old daughters now 10th graders at Jericho High School and another 13-year old daughter attending Jericho Middle School. His son, now 19 years old, graduated from JHS and attends Hofstra University (Steven’s alma mater) where he studies engineering. “We are not a gym, we are a wellness center. There are some things you just cannot cure with more muscle growth. But I am willing to bet that if most people, who get injuries, have aches and pains, osteopenia (loss of bone mineral density and a common precursor of osteoporosis), had more muscle on their body, their condition could have been minimized or prevented, entirely. But, we do have a program to improve and even reverse their conditions, via a medical grade machines created solely for the SuperSlow method of training. We also have a medical grade machine specifically created to improve bone density. I want to help people to live life, 20 years from now, the way they live now. See page 9
