Jericho Public Schools has set up 10 subcommittees of parents, teachers, administration, learning center instructors and students to participate in decision-making and thinking through scenarios for school buildings and in-class learning to resume for the start of the 2020-’21 district year in late August, as Labor Day falls late on September 7 and schools would be in session. All scenarios and formalized plans would be subject to New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s guidelines and mandates ahead of implementation, after the guidelines are arrived at and handed down for compliance by school districts in various parts of the state. Superintendent of Schools Hank Grishman said as the 2019-2020 academic year officially ended on June 30, the district picked up “with full speed” meetings and planning conversations by the in-district reopening committees. In the format of Jericho Schools’ 10 subcommittees, over 100 participants were working with district administrators for this process of strategization. “We’re planning for all scenarios as just about every district is that we’ve spoken with in terms of fall reopening. We are simultaneously planning and carefully studying some hybrid models out there as well as planning for remote instruction. Earlier today (July 2) Gov. Cuomo’s office

released a press release stating that, per his comment on schools’ reopening this September, essentially right now is far too early to assess the health and safety conditions for our kids and our staff and just too early for him to make the ultimate determination, which Gov. Cuomo feels he has the authority to make statewide on whether schools can open in September.” Grishman said. Dr. Benjamin Ciuffo, Jericho’s assistant superintendent for personnel & educational operations, explained during the school board’s July 2 Zoom meeting that the 10 committees organized by the district’s planning team have met over the last few weeks and most subcommittees completed tasks and planning exercises they were assigned. Members of subcommittees included more than the parents and in-district teachers and educators as input came first hand with members working in the transportation division, custodial staff, clerical staff, Buildings & Grounds, teacher aides and more. The 10 committees were sharing their info and findings via a working form on GoogleDocs and Ciuffo said there will be four unique scenarios outlined; that data was to be compiled, synchronized and sent to the New York State Education Department the week of June 6. The submission to the Governor’s office would be a public See page 12
