The coronavirus outbreak making international news headlines, believed to have originated in Wuhan, capital city of China’s Hubei province, has produced a ripple effect reaching Long Island’s North Shore communities and the New York metropolitan region. The annual Lunar New Year Celebration at Syosset High School that was planned for Saturday, February 8, 2020 has been cancelled due to the outbreak and potential spread of the virus. All purchased tickets for the annual celebration in Syosset have been fully refunded. The Lunar New Year celebration each year takes place with collaborations and support from Syosset Central School district, the Syosset High School Chinese Cultural Society known as “CCS” and the nonprofit Chinese American Association of Syosset (CAAS) which formed in 2015. It marks a major community milestone and celebration of Syosset and Woodbury great cultural diversity. Upon a decision by the Syosset Board of Education in late 2016, beginning with school year 2017-2018 Syosset became the first Long Island school district to observe Lunar New Year, Eid-al-Fitr, Eid-al-Adha and Diwali with officials school holidays. CAAS has spearheaded organizing the annual performance -- featuring music, martial arts, lion dances and presentations from promi-
nent local elected officials on a late January/early February Saturday in the Lunar New Year season each year from 2016 to the present year. Last year Nassau County Executive Laura Curran, County Comptroller Jack Schnirman and Syosset High School graduate (Class of 2012) former school board trustee and Nassau County Legislator Josh Lafazan attended the Lunar New Year celebration at the high school, greeting community members and presenting citations. On January 23, the CAAS board provided a statement for the Advance and News-Journal, as notice was also given to sponsors, elected officials and others planning to participate in Lunar New Year festivities scheduled for February 8: “The CAAS organization, board members and families care greatly about the health and well-being of our community, no matter what age. It is with this priority in mind that we are taking the latest coronavirus outbreak in China very seriously here in Syosset, especially during this high travel Lunar New Year holiday time. As a result, CAAS decided to cancel this year’s Lunar New Year Celebration on Saturday, February 8, 2020. We know a lot of people have put in tons of time and effort to prepare for our popular and highly anticipated annual show, but as Chinese American community leaders, See page 8
