Syosset Library, coffee shop join forces for reading BY RIKKI MASSAND

A new storytime series in Syosset aims at captivating young audiences with readings, group activities and hands-on learning in an offsite location -- Mongo’s Coffee shop at 170 Michael Drive. This collaboration between 24-year Syosset residents, Mongo’s owners Mitchel and Marna Margulis, and the Syosset Public Library allows moms, dads, grandparents and caregivers from the community time to relax and sip locally-roasted specialty coffees and cappuccinos while their youngest kids are entertained. Jessikah Chautin, a Syosset native and SHS graduate, is the community engagement specialist for Syosset Public Library. She began the role in September 2018, after more than a decade as a children’s librarian. Throughout 2018 Mitchel Margulis applied for permits to open on Michael Drive but the Town building department permit process and other design elements didn’t come together until early 2019. Chautin explains that she researched the business’ planned location, among other Syosset venues, and thought of the potential for SPL and families in the community. “When I first started this (community engagement) position I immediately got to work looking for partnerships that would be beneficial for offsite library programming. I caught wind of Mongo's looking to open when I was researching and had reached out to Mitchel while he was still in the stages of building and getting permits for Mongo's. I checked in with him every few months to get an update on his status,” she said. Chautin emailed the Advance and News-Journal in December to explain the genesis from a “first trial storytime” at Mongo’s Coffee in summer 2019. “It attracted an eager crowd. Beginning on Friday, January 10, 2020 at 10 a.m. we will aim to hold monthly storytimes at Mongo's. We bring about three stories centered around a theme, followed by a finger play and some coloring sheets,” she said. Syosset Library will continue partnering with Mongo’s Coffee for groundbreaking new events that appeal to an older crowd. Ideas include a coffee tasting event for March and two Trivia Nights and a board gaming afternoon aimed at adults of any age, Chautin said. Such theme nights at the new cafe/lounge would occur later in the spring. Mongo’s Coffee is a Syosset Woodbury Chamber member business
