WORLD CLASS CAKE MAKER
HHS students send gifts to third world countries BY GARY SIMEONE
Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and his colleagues on the Town Board recently honored Jean Schapowal, of Hicksville, a world class and award-winning cake artist. Jean recently represented the United States in the Cake Designers World Championship in Milan, Italy, a competition that is considered the Olympics of cake decorating. She placed 8th overall for her four-foot high display cake representing an homage to American music complete with a saxophone, trumpet and snare drum.
It will be a merry Christmas for children in third-world countries around the world, thanks to a Hicksville High School based Christian club. The Frontline Christian Club teamed up with members of the schools National Honor Society to help box items such as notepads, erasers, dolls and hygienic products last month, to be shipped to poverty stricken countries around the world. Diane DiTucci, a Food/Nutriton teacher and club advisor of The Frontline Christian Club, said that the monthlong event, entitled ‘Operation Christmas Child,’ was an important milestone for students in her club. “In November the National
Honor Society placed a huge box in the main lobby of the school, where items were collected throughout the month,” said DiTucci. “Our club took all of the gifts and we met in the cafeteria to fill individual boxes and separated them into both boys and girls items.” Members of the Frontline Christian Club, which consists of students in 9th through 12th grade, packed up multiple boxes into care package items. “They spent the whole day in the high school cafeteria, unpacking and packing tons of items including toiletries, books, notebooks and all of the latest dolls so that children in dire conditions across the world can have a brighter Christmas holiday,” See page 10
