Division sophomore receives award for community service

BY GARY SIMEONE Division Avenue High School sophomore, Armaan Singh, has been busy these past few years, volunteering to help at-risk children in the village of Hempstead. His hard work and dedication did not go unnoticed, as he was awarded last month with a Commendation Award from the New York State Senate. Singh was nominated by Nathaniel Berkeley, a district representative from the office of the State Senator Kevin Thomas, for his volunteering efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Senator Thomas, who represents the 6th District in Nassau county, said that the award is given to exemplary individuals who make a positive impact in their community.

Shots fired at Hicksville incident Nassau County Police have reported an incident involving gun fire at a Hicksville eatery on Sunday, November 14th at 1:10 a.m.

According to detectives, Second Precinct Officers responded to a disturbance in front of Nelly’s Tacqueria Saloon, located at 365 West

Old Country Road. Police say an 18-year-old male victim was involved in a verbal dispute with three male subjects.

They say the dispute escalated and one of the male subjects fired multiple shots with a handgun but the victim was not injured. The three subjects entered a vehicle and fled

the scene traveling westbound on West Old Country Road.

Detectives request anyone with information regarding this incident to contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS or call 911.

Largest “Cruise-Thru” POB sixth grader Toys for Tots collection drive becomes published author

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Tom Hand announced that the Town’s massive “Cruise-Thru” Toys for Tots Collection Drive will take place at John Burns Park in Massapequa on Saturday, December 4 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. (rain date is Sunday, December 5). In partnership with the United States Marine Corps, the Town is collecting toys to help families impacted by the COVID-19 economic crisis and those less fortunate throughout the community during the upcoming holiday season. In addition to the Cruise-Thru, collection boxes are located at Town facilities through December 14.

Supervisor Saladino said, “The Toys for Tots Drive has long been a huge success under the leadership of the U.S. Marine Corps, especially here in the Town of Oyster Bay, as just last year we smashed the previous year’s record in our toy drive collection. I encourage all of our residents who are able to donate to this amazing cause, as the Toys for Tots Drive helps ensure that disadvantaged children within our community do not have to go the holiday season without something to bring them happiness.”

The Cruise Thru Holiday Toy Drive will provide residents an excellent way to contribute directly to the cause and help

bring a smile to a child’s face this holiday season. Additionally, the event will feature an appearance by Santa Claus, and a drop box where kids can drop their letters to Santa off at. Letters dropped off with a legible name and return address will be answered by Santa before the holiday.

“Toys for Tots sends a message of hope to less fortunate children who otherwise wouldn’t be receiving presents this holiday season. I urge residents, who can, to donate new unwrapped toys to any of our drop-off locations,” said Councilman Tom Hand. “By making a donation, you can help ease the financial burden of families hardest hit by the effects of the coronavirus this holiday season.”

Model Train Show to benefit Railroad Museum Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Steve Labriola today announced that Trainville Hobby Depot will host a Model Train Show on Saturday, November 20 and Sunday, November 21 from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Hicksville Community Center, located at 28 West Carl Street in Hicksville. The Model Train Show includes operating model layouts coordinated by Trainville Hobby Depot.

Donations are being accepted at the exhibit to support the Oyster Bay Railroad Museum.

“We are pleased to partner with Trainville Hobby Depot, who coordi-

Plainview-Old Bethpage sixth grade student Ria Arjun, author of “The Adventure Begins: A Collection of TEN Short Stories.”

Middle School, wrote “The Adventure Begins: A Collection of TEN Short Stories” earlier this year when she was in the fifth grade. The book is a compilation of ten short stories which features different genres, intriguing characters, very unique plots and valuable morals.

What is even more impressive than Ria’s talented writing skills is what she is doing with the proceeds that come from her book sales. Ria owns a private foundation called RALS Foundation, which focuses on providing education to disadvantaged children and adolescents around the world. The proceeds from the sale of the book go to the RALS Foundation; and recently, Ria has graciously offered to donate a portion of her sales back to the Mattlin Middle School PTA as well.

The charismatic student also has her own YouTube channel where she discusses the RALS Foundation in further detail and inspires others to maintain a positive attitude. Property tax exemptions available to residents Town of Oyster Bay residents may apply for New York State property tax exemptions from now through January 3, 2022, according to Oyster Bay Receiver of Taxes Jeffrey Pravato. Homeowners wishing to receive exemptions on their 2022-2023 School taxes and 2023 General taxes must file with the Nassau County Department of Assessment or New York State prior to the January 3rd deadline.

“I want to make sure that every resident who is eligible, whether they’re a senior citizen, veteran, new homeowner, volunteer firefighter/EMT, person with a disability, or person renovating/ improving their home, get the opportunity to take advantage of the available exemptions,” Pravato stated. “There are many exemptions available to qualified residents and homeowners, so I urge those interested to contact my office for further assistance parsing through the matter.”

Exemptions, resulting in property tax savings, are available to qualified residents for the following categories:

School Tax Relief Program (STAR)- Residents may receive only one of the following: • STAR Credit - The STAR Program has been changed by New York State. New recipients, and current recipients whose annual income is between $250,000 and $500,000, will be issued a check directly from New York State instead of receiving a school property tax exemption. The amount of the benefit will be the same. You cannot receive both the credit and the exemption. Register with New York State by telephone at (518) 457-2036 or online at tax.ny.gov/pit/property/star/default. htm.

• Basic STAR Property Tax

Exemption - This program provides an exemption from school property taxes for owner-occupied, primary residences with an annual household income of less than $250,000. Current Basic Star Exemption recipients will keep their exemption as long as they continue to own their current home.

• Enhanced STAR Property Tax Exemption/Credit - This exemption is available to senior citizen homeowners who are 65 years of age or older during the year in which the exemption takes effect, and whose annual income does not exceed $92,000. Senior citizens whose annual income exceeds $92,000 will still be eligible for the Basic STAR Exemption/Credit. Current Enhanced Star Exemption recipients will keep their exemption as long as they continue to own their current home. Recipients must enroll in the Income Verification Program.

• Senior Citizen Exemption provides a tax savings for individuals over the age of 65, whose income is less than $37,400. To participate and receive this tax savings (between 5% and up to 50% reduction on certain county, town and school district property taxes) specific qualification criteria must be met.

• Veterans Exemptions are for those individuals who rendered service to our country. The eligibility to receive this exemption and amount to be exempted depends upon the time, duration and type of service, along with other criteria.

• Cold War Veterans Exemption is for veterans who served during the Cold War period. The Law also provides an additional exemption to disabled veterans.

• Gold Star Parent Exemption

is available for the parent of a child who died in the line of duty while serving in the United States Armed Forces during a period of war, as defined in NYS Real Property Tax Law. • Persons With Disabilities and Limited Incomes Partial Property Tax Exemption is available to eligible applicants who have a physical or mental impairment, not due to use of alcohol or illegal drug use, that substantially limits that person's ability to engage in one or more major life activities. The requirements to qualify are based on the person's disability, ownership, residency and occupancy status, and income. Persons with incomes less than $37,400 can qualify to receive an exemption from 5% to 50% of the assessed value.

• Home Improvement Tax Reductions Program for the Physically Disabled is granted to those persons who are physically disabled and meet certain criteria. It is equal to the amount of any increase in value of property attributable to improvements made for the purpose of facilitating and accommodating the use and accessibility of the property.

• Home Improvements Exemption is an eight-year decreasing exemption on alterations, reconstructions or improvements that increase the assessed value of a one or two family home. In the first year, 100% of the assessed value of the improvement is exempt. In the second year, 87.5%, in the third year, 75% and so on. Certain eligibility requirements must be met to participate in this program.

• First-Time Home Buyers of Newly Constructed Homes may apply for and receive a partial real property

tax exemption. The maximum exemption is offered over five years, starting with a 50% exemption the first year and phasing to 10% in the fifth and final year. Homebuyers are subject to certain price and income limits set by the State of New York Mortgage Agency (SONYMA).

• Volunteer Firefighter and Ambulance Worker Exemption is available to eligible firefighters and ambulance workers. Up to 10% reduction in the assessed value of their property can be obtained to volunteers who have served at least five years in a Town of Oyster Bay Fire Department in which they reside. Certain eligibility requirements must be met to participate in this program.

Receiver Pravato advises homeowners who are interested in obtaining an exemption, to contact the Nassau County Department of Assessment at (516) 571-1500, where they can obtain additional information and applications.

They may visit the County Assessor’s office at 240 Old Country Road, Mineola, New York 11501. However, first time applicants, or residents with an income between $250,000 and $500,000, for the STAR Credit must contact New York State directly to register by telephone at (518) 457-2036 or online at www.tax. ny.gov/pit/property/star/default.htm.

Catholic Daughters collect clothing for needy At a collection of used clothing and other items, Catholic Daughters Court #1690 of St. Bernard’s Parish collected 210 bags of materials weighing in at 4,840 pounds.

The items collected included clothing, shoes, handbags, sheets, belts, towels, coats, bathing suits, cover ups and baseball hats. The destination of the collection is an affiliate of ACLD (Adults and Children With Learning Disabilities) program called ReWearAble.

The event was chaired by Susan Maher and Louise Cassano. “This was a great collection for a very worthy

cause” said Maher.

“ReWearAble is an organization that is unique and serves its population in a number of ways through employment and repurposing materials that helps support other worthy causes,” commented Cassano.

ReWearAble is a recycling and job creation program committed to helping people with developmental disabilities pursue enviable lives through employment. Employees of ReWearAble conduct the in-house sorting ensuring everything collected is prepared for reuse or repurposing. ReWearable

Levittown Council announces Halloween Horror House winners

Hundreds of responses to Levittown Community Council’s Halloween Horror House Contest brought out numerous spectators at the winners’ homes this Halloween season. The following winners were selected: First place went to the Tamberelli/Toborg family at 18 Rolling Lane, Levittown; second place

to Barbara and Jack Lazarus of 167 Old Farm Road; and, third place to Paul Krill and Kate Lane at 38 Parkside Drive North.

The Rolling Lane home decorating was a family event including Jackie and Ray Toborg, their daughter Sarah and her husband Kristian Tamberelli and the

Tamberelli children Liliana(15), Landon (10), twins Kameron and Blake(9), and Grayson(4). The family agreed on a name for the display that featured eerie jack-olanterns, oversized skeletons and a sign daring spectators to enter. They called it “Welcome to Nightmare on Rolling Lane” and the project has become a

family tradition, which they intend to continue for years to come.

In a close second place, the home on Old Farm Road with witches at a cauldron and dragons overseeing the brew is a 20-year tradition of Barbara and Jack Lazarus, who add more to the spooky décor year after year. Holiday decorations are fun couple events at the Lazarus home and include displays for Christmas, Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day and Easter. Not only do they decorate their home, but they enjoy dressing in costume as well.

Creating an environment where everyone, regardless of age, feels comfortable trick or treating, Paul Krill and his fiancé Kathleen Lake decorate with charming little critters and characters and a friendly dragon or two. Their enjoyment comes from seeing the smiles on the faces of all the spectators and how people want to take a bit of the enjoyment home with them as many take photos of their display. The couple thinks of it as a way to bring happiness and of giving back to the community.

Nominations for the best decorated homes were requested by the Levittown Community Council and the community was asked to vote for their favorite. The three that received the most votes were selected winners. Council President Pat Patane, Secretary Mary Kay Ross visited the homes to photograph the displays.

Reading is “Wand-erful” at Berry Hill School

PARP is a National PTA program and stands for Pick A Reading Partner. The PARP program is designed to promote a love of reading in children. Berry Hill’s PTA organized a week of PARP events for students to enjoy. This year’s theme was “Harry PARPer – Reading is WANDerful”. On Monday, to kick off the week students were greeted by staff members dressed in Harry Potter glasses and ties.

The outside of the building was magically decorated with Harry, Hermione, and Professor Dumbledore, reminding the children how powerful reading is every day. Students were mesmerized when Dr. Thomas Rogers, superintendent

During the week of the PARP, the PTA organized a book collection for the Book Fairies. The Book Fairies is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization that collects reading materials for people in need throughout metropolitan New York. Each night, students were encouraged to complete a reading log with a reading partner as well as answer fun trivia questions online. Each day, students were gifted a special treat from the Berry Hill PTA — ­ magic wand and broom stick pencils, bookmarks, Harry

On Tuesday and Wednesday, Berry Hill’s PTA organized a Scholastic Book Fair. To incorporate the theme into the book fair each class had to search for a hidden Harry on the shelves. Classes received a Harry Potter Uno for their classroom as a prize. Students wore their favorite Hogwarts house color for House Spirit Day during the book fair as well.

children’s books, including his latest book “Untitled.” Young shared some of his spooky stories, as well as his wizardly drawing techniques.

To end the enchanted week, Corey the Dribbler hosted another virtual assembly to show us his magical basketball skills and encouraged students to focus and work hard to achieve their goals.

The PARP closing assembly revealed 1,761 books were collected and donated to the Book Fairies and announced next year’s PARP theme. The Berry Hill PTA is excited to start planning a special Amusement PARP for the students next year!

"This award is one of the highest honors a New York state resident can receive."

In the summer of his freshman year, Singh started on his path of volunteerism by tutoring students in mathematics, as part of the Hempstead Peace program. He helped to educate at-risk children by virtually tutoring them in the subject in group and one-on-one sessions.

"I was teaching these kids, who ranged in all ages, through a (google) Zoom call, over the summer during my freshman year and also during the school year," said Singh. "I helped them to catch up on the stuff they were currently learning in school and also tried to get them a step ahead by teaching them math lessons they would learn later in the year."

He said that his tutoring sessions were appreciated by students in a school district, where many of them come from low-income households and emergency aid is frequently sought out by administrators.

Singh said that he found out he was a recipient of the award over the summer from a district representative in Senator Thomas' office.

"They had heard about me through a previous award I received in May. My mom received an email from the Senators office and I was contacted through the school that an award ceremony was going to be held in late October at Nassau Community College. At the ceremony I was handed the Commendation Award and Senator Thomas gave a brief description of my volunteer effort in the community."

Singh previously earned a President's Volunteer Service Award in his freshman year for his math tutoring and other activities including writing cards to children with cancer and other community initiatives.

Poinsettias

I have. Were they red? Probably. That is because we all know that poinsettias are red, right? Well, not so fast. There are pink, purple, white, spotted, striped and even yellow and orange poinsettias. Every year, the commercial plant breeders of poinsettias come out with five to 20 new varieties. Most of us don’t notice the differences, but there are some important changes aside from new colors.

Poinsettias are not one-size-fits-all plants anymore. There are important considerations for the grower and for the consumer of poinsettias. Poinsettias are native to Mexico and Central America where they grow into 10-foot-tall shrubs.

They are named after the first United States Minister to Mexico Joel Poinsett who introduced the plant to botanists in the U.S. in the 1820s. Fast-forward about

100 years and the Ecke family founds the first poinsettia nursery in California.

They popularized poinsettias and produced many new varieties.

Fast-forward another 100 years and

hundreds of millions of poinsettias are being sold around the world. In fact, each summer and fall, millions of two-inchlong cuttings are shipped into the U.S. from massive, sterile greenhouses in Nic-

Enjoying this year’s Thanksgiving holiday meal

BY CLAIRE LYNCH Thanksgiving Day is a time for joining together with family and friends in a careful, socially distanced way and I can’t help but think of family traditions that make this day the special one that it is. My brother, Phil, says all he needs is some turkey and stuffing plus a little gravy on his plate and he automatically knows that it’s Thanksgiving Day. One of the best things about coming from a large, extended family is that before Thanksgiving Day rolls around, I have plenty of chances to read a stories about the first Thanksgiving to my nieces and nephews. Last November Abigail, my seven-year-old niece, was visiting and I read the book called, “If You Sailed on the Mayflower in 1620”

by Ann McGovern. It raises such questions as, If you were a Pilgrim leaving your homeland and heading west to an unknown continent, what would you expect? Not just on the voyage with its many hardships but once you arrived?

What would it have been like to pack all of your belongings and wonder what adventures were ahead? It described the Pilgrims saying their prayers and singing the holy songs they knew well.

They were brave for striking out for the sake of religious freedom and the Pilgrims were thankful that the sailors got them safely to the New World.

The first Thanksgiving was a basic one compared to the Thanksgiving dinners we have today but still, the intention of expressing their gratitude for what they had was the same. It was the thought that counted.

Explaining that the first Thanksgiving dinner was probably meat, fish, Indian corn and vegetables from their gardens such as collard greens, parsnips, turnips, carrots, onions, spinach and cabbage, I said the idea of gathering together to celebrate a meal with family and friends was what it was all about.

Abby laughed when I said that I doubt-

ed there was any cranberry sauce or sweet potatoes at the first Thanksgiving and she said, “Wow, those are two of my favorites! I would have missed them.”

At school during Library Abby had recently heard the story of “Over the River and Through the Wood” by Emma Randall. It’s a cute tale of a brother and sister who are ready to set off to their grandmother’s house in their red horsedrawn sleigh with their parents preparing to follow in their own purple sleigh.

As the children journey though “white and drifted snow,” they cross over a river and along the way meet a rabbit, beavers, moose, foxes and a wolf who follow them to Grandmother’s farm.

The front door opens, the boy and girl are welcomed by their Grandmother and their holiday begins. “The horse knows the way to carry the sleigh,” Abby and I sing together, laughing. The story is full of nostalgia and it’s a great one to tell youngsters on or before the holiday.

Two weeks ago I was talking with Jenna who’s a long-time friend and she was recalling her family’s Thanksgiving holidays. As a young girl Jenna grew up in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, and at the age of eight she remembers decorating the living room with her younger brother and setting the table under the guidance of her mother for Thanksgiving.

After setting out her family’s fanciest plates, Jenna folded the napkins just so then added the utensils. Stepping back, Jenna would check on her progress and smile, pleased that all of the guests would be happy with how their holiday table looked.

Going into the kitchen Jenna would watch as her mother made various holiday pies and cakes from scratch. As her mom mixed the ingredients for the cakes, the pie shells and the filling, Jenna filed that information into her memory bank. She paid special attention when her mom mixed the ingre-

Once baked and cooled, Jenna would smear butter on one and enjoy it.

A few years later Jenna and her family moved to the Upper West Side and Jenna did her usual decorations plus was a big help assisting her mother the day before baking the traditional desserts.

As a young married couple Jenna and her husband, Tony, moved to a house on Long Island to raise their family. On Thanksgiving everyone in their extended family was invited to share in the big meal and scrumptious desserts.

They’re still invited but the extended family gets to gather again via Zoom this year so everyone can be safe from the Covid-19 pandemic.

Jenna and I have similar get-togethers with our immediate families and often with our extended family relatives and the day after Thanksgiving we always compare notes about how everything went. Still, it’s inevitable that at one point or another in our conversation Jenna talks about being a kid in Bay Ridge and the Upper West

Side and excitedly getting ready for the holidays with all of the traditions and trimmings. On Thanksgiving she still likes drinking the apple cider and her favorite flavored pie is cherry.

At one time or another I remind Jenna that no matter where we are, the idea is being with each other and enjoying a meal without having to think about the next big holiday, Christmas.

For the moment Thanksgiving is all about savoring the roast turkey, the stuffing, the green bean casserole, the yams and more. Jenna and I like sharing the latest news, the latest jokes and the latest faux pas. Christmas is special, naturally, but Thanksgiving is a laidback type of holiday.

While chatting, I think about how wonderful the holiday is, always, and how whether it’s this year’s happenings or something from the past, talking about the holidays always makes us feel wistful and nostalgic. Whether we are at home or visiting other people’s houses, the point is being together, enjoying the food and festivities, and being able to share our gratitude.

Even More Questions From Women

BY TOM MARGENAU I’ve speculated before that most of the readers of my column are women. And that conjecture is based on the fact that I seem to get many more emails from them than I get from men. That’s why, for example, in the past month, I’ve written two columns targeted to my female readers. But I guess I didn’t do a very good job of helping them understand the Social Security program because those columns seem to have generated even more emails from women. Here is a sampling.

Q: I am 75 years old and getting widow’s benefits from my first husband, who died many years ago. I was married a second time for 20 years to another man. He was a doctor and made very good money. I divorced him because of physical abuse I suffered. He is living in a beach house in San Diego. I live in a duplex in Waco, Texas. What I can’t figure out is: Why am I not getting any of his Social Security?

A: You’re not getting any of his Social Security because he’s not dead -- yet!

(I’m not trying to give you any ideas!) Or to put that another way, a widow’s rate pays up to twice as much as the rate paid to a wife (or divorced wife) of a guy who is still alive.

If you are due two benefits, you only receive the one that pays the higher rate.

You might be getting up to 100% of your deceased first husband’s Social Security.

But you are only due one-half of your second husband’s benefit. And I’m sure 100% from husband number one pays more than 50% from husband number two -- no matter how rich he is. Now, if the doctor dies, you can switch to benefits on his record. So, all I can suggest you do is order a subscription to the San Diego newspaper and start reading the obituaries!

Q: I am 58 years old. I get Social Security disability benefits. My husband, who made a lot more money than I ever did, is 66 and recently signed up for his Social Security.

His benefit is three times as much as mine. Yet I was told I can’t get any spousal benefits from his record.

Why not?

A: Because you’re not old enough.

The earliest that spousal benefits can be paid is age 62. So, four years from now, you can check to see if you might be due any extra benefits on your husband’s record.

Q: I am 73 years old. I get $1,620 per month in my own retirement benefits. My ex-husband, who always made a six-figure income, must be getting way more than me. So, I figure I am due something extra from his Social Security. I talked to someone at Social Security’s 800 number, and she said I’m not eligible for anything on his record because no one is

getting $3,240 per month. What did she mean by that?

A: What she was trying to explain to you, rather awkwardly I think, is that you are either due your own Social Security benefit, or half of your ex-husband’s basic full retirement age benefit, whichever pays the higher rate. Currently, the maximum full retirement benefit is $3,148. Half of that is $1,574. Your own Social Security retirement exceeds that, so that is why you aren’t due anything from your ex-husband’s Social Security account.

Or to clarify the Social Security rep’s remarks a little more, what she was trying to tell you is that because you’re getting $1,620, your ex would have to be getting $3,240 or more before you could get anything extra from him. And since no retiree can be getting that much in a basic benefit, you’re not eligible for divorced wife’s benefits.

I know some of my readers are saying: “Wait a minute. You said the maximum retirement benefit is $3,148. But I’m getting way more than that.” Please note that I said the maximum “full retirement age” benefit is $3,148. Many retirees are getting more than that because they waited until some later age, like age 70 for example, to sign up for Social Security -- so they are getting a delayed-retirement bonus added to their monthly benefits. But a spousal rate is always based on the full retirement age benefit, not the bonus-augmented benefit. And once again, the current maximum full retirement age benefit is $3,148, which means the current maximum spousal benefit is $1,574.

Q: I am 71 years old. I get $1,415 from Social Security. My rich ex-husband told me he is getting monthly benefits of $3,430, so I should be getting half of that, or $1,716. How come I’m not getting that?

A: As I explained in the answer to the prior question, the rate payable to a wife is based on the husband’s full retirement age rate. In other words, the rate he would have been due at age 66. With a monthly benefit as high as his, I’m sure he didn’t start his Social Security checks until age 70. And by doing that, he got an extra 32% “delayed retirement bonus” tacked on to his monthly checks. So, I’m guessing his full retirement age rate is around $2,600. And you are due half of that, or $1,300. So, the reason you are not getting wife’s benefits is because your own $1,415 rate exceeds your spousal benefit rate.

Q: I am 66. I get $1,440 per month.

My husband is 72. He took his benefits at 70 and he gets $3,490. I read in a past column that I only can get half of his age 66 benefit rate, not his age 70 rate. But I know a woman at our church who says she is getting her deceased husband’s age 70 benefit.

Why does she get it and I don’t?

A: Because her husband is dead, and yours isn’t. Benefits payable to the spouse of a living husband are based on the full retirement age benefit amount.

But benefits payable to the widow of a guy who has died are based on his full rate, including any delayed retirement credits he was getting.

Q: I am a single woman. I’ve been single all my life. And I get sick and tired of listening to these married women clamoring for more benefits off of a husband’s or ex-husband’s Social Security account. I think a

woman should only get the Social Security benefits she has worked for and earned herself.

A: No comment! (Although I’d love to be a fly on the wall in a room where you and a bunch of your married friends debate this issue.)

Balancing selling against purchasing, and the trade-offs

t’s what I’ve called a perfect storm for not only purchasers but for sellers too! The highest prices benefit the sellers, and the lowest rates are advantageous for buyers!

However, what I see more and more is that sellers are tending to overprice their homes because they think that they have platinum and that everyone will pay the price because today there aren’t too many choices. On the other hand, buyers are in many instances not willing to trade-off for either a different town nearby or consider a different style home, or they have to have a larger property that their price point will not accommodate.

I can understand the mindset of some sellers who have renovated or upgraded their homes and are enjoying the new environment and the thought of selling and moving becomes a distant thought that they have now pushed off sometime in the future, whenever that might be. I believe getting out at the top as prices have reached a pinnacle level, really isn’t enough to make more sellers consider selling.

I think one of the reasons, is that so many think these insane increases will continue as long as inventory is at historic lows and builders really cannot catch up in constructing the millions of homes that are needed to satisfy demand at the current time.

However, the one factor that many are not considering is that interest rates and their direction that they will have to trend up! Maybe some just don’t understand what is going on with the 10+ trillion that the Fed has printed out of thin air, with nothing

really backing it up (like we used to have a gold standard until President Nixon did away with it, in 1971, an extreme measure, intended to end a currency war that destroyed the faith in the U.S. dollar). Today, we only have the good faith in the U.S. Government backing the value of our dollar. Will this be enough going forward? Time will tell!

So with all the money given out over the past 18 months and still being provided through various programs and the Fed easing off on buying back our bonds, rates invariably will have to increase. The question will be how much and how high will they go.

Inflation is literally “off the hook” and I believe more and more people are becoming aware that it is much worse than we are being told, when adding energy, (gas and this winter’s heating expense) and food to the equation.

So as rates increase, the cost of building new homes will increase, especially with the current supply shortage of almost everything and the increases that many materials, e.g. wood and cement have endured since the Covid19 pandemic began. Eventually, inventory will increase, lowering prices to some degree on existing homes. But the $64,000 question is when? Will it be next year in 2022, 2023 or even 3-5 years from now?

So my advice to sellers is if you are so comfortable that you will live the rest of your life in your home, then

enjoy it. However, if not, then begin contemplating a future plan and figure out when you might consider selling; before rates increase reducing and cooling off demand, potentially lowering your value.

Buyers on the other hand need to begin getting more realistic and pragmatic in their outlook as to what is really important in their search to find their “next place to call home.” Even if you can’t afford a single family home, but want to be in a specific town, then consider a condo, or even a co-op in a financially stable building. But by all means get out of your rental and buy something. Even if it means moving out of the area or state, stop being a tenant and transition into becoming an owner and stop transferring your wealth into your landlord’s bank account and begin increasing yours over the long run.

Waiting is the worst situation to put you and your family in, so buy into the current lowest interest rates. The way to accomplish this is go through a trading-off process as well as through a downsizing of your “needs and wants” to just purchase something somewhere. Inflation will eventually be your savior and benefit to your future wealth. As Ray Dalio, Ceo and founder of Bridgewater Associates Hedge Fund always says, “cash is trash” unless invested in an asset that will increase over time. Either stocks, a business or at least in purchasing your own home.

Poinsettias Continued from page 2 daily sunlight to be ready to sell. Greenhouses across the U.S. differ in their abilities to control the temperature and the length of the day. Different varieties of red poinsettias are now grown in northern, central and southern greenhouses based on their ability to withstand area temperatures. The newer heat-tolerant varieties are better for consumers in the Southern states.

There are small poinsettias that grow quickly and can be sold in small pots very cheaply. Big-box stores know that most people only buy one plant for the holiday, whether it be a lily at Easter, a chrysanthemum for the fall or a poinsettia for the winter. If the big-box store sells the plant first, it doesn’t matter if it won’t last until the holiday season is over; they already have their money.

Overall, poinsettias do last much longer than they used to. Years ago, the plants lost their leaves within weeks of being brought home. Now, they may still be red next May. Part of this is because breeders are specifically looking for plants that keep their true flowers longer.

The colorful leaves are called bracts and are just leaves. At the end of each branch of colorful bracts is a cluster of tiny male and female flowers and nectar glands called a cyathium. The longer the cyathi-

um lasts, the longer the bracts will stay on the plant. A key to buying poinsettias is to see if the cyathium is still fresh and not withered and falling off.

Poinsettia breeders and growers are also looking for plants with strong root systems and branches that reach upward and not outward so they don’t break off when sold in plastic sleeves.

With all that said, color is still the most important factor in growing and selling poinsettias. Breeders are getting plants with darker green leaves that make the red, pink and white bracts look brighter. Also, look for the very pretty variety called Tapestry with green and white leaves and red bracts.

As for the other colors, the white bracts are getting whiter compared to the creamy white of the past. The salmon pinks are becoming more pure pink. The purples are getting more vivid.

For those who are willing to think outside the box a bit, the new yellow and orange poinsettia bracts look very nice as autumn decorations for Halloween or Thanksgiving.

The best place to find new and better poinsettias is your local florist and/or greenhouse grower. They will have more colors; bigger, stronger plants than the big-box stores; and they will have healthier plants that didn’t get exposed to cold or stay wrapped up in plastic sleeves until all the bottom leaves fell off.

A Dam Good Story

BY TRACY BECKERMAN “Whoa!!!” I yelled, lifting my legs onto the couch where I was sitting and typing in our new, very old house.

“Eep!” yelled the large, furry creature that was not my dog in the middle of our new, very old living room.

We both froze in some kind of homeowner/wild-animal-in-the-living-room standoff, until I stood up and yelled at it.

“Hey, you furry beast, get out of my new, very old house,” I demanded. “Go back to your den or nest or burrow or wherever you came from.” Obediently the animal turned around and ran out the door that I had left open to get some fresh air into the house.

Note to self: Do not leave the door open when you have a new, very old house near the woods.

It all happened so fast I really had no idea what the thing was. It was bigger than a chipmunk, but it was smaller than a bear. As I hadn’t yet researched

which animals lived in the area, I couldn’t figure it out. But whatever it was, it felt comfortable enough to come into my house, uninvited, without even a housewarming gift or a plate of cookies to welcome me to the neighborhood.

Once the house was free of unwanted animals, I decided to take a look on the internet to see if I could figure out what it was. At the very least, if it came back, I’d know what to call it.

“We had a beaver in the house today,” I said to my husband when he got home from work. I showed him the picture I found online.

“What do you mean we had a beaver in the house?”

I told him what had happened and sat back proudly so he could tell me how smart I was for identifying the interloper.

“It wasn’t a beaver,” he said. “There are no beavers in the suburbs. It was probably a woodchuck.”

“It was a beaver,” I insisted. “I found

it on the internet, so it has to be true.”

“Did it have a flat tail?”

I thought for a moment. I did not remember a flat tail. Was that a necessary feature to be a beaver? If it had a flat tail, it could have been a platypus, too, although I didn’t remember the beaver having a bill. Plus, platypi only live in Australia, so it would have had to come an awfully long way just to run through my new, very old living room.

I guess it didn’t make much sense that it would be a beaver. There were no bodies of water in my living room and nowhere to build a dam. Of course, it could have been lost, looking for a place to build a dam, which was why it turned up in my living room.

“Umm, maybe it was a muskrat?” I said.

“Honey, I’m pretty sure it was a woodchuck,” he said.

“I’ve seen woodchucks before. This was no woodchuck. It may, however, have been a groundhog.”

“They’re the same thing,” he said.

“Not in my living room they’re not.”

The next day I made sure to keep all the doors closed and opened the windows instead.

“You are not going to believe this,” I said to my husband later that day. “A squirrel flew through one of our windows into the living room.

“Oh, come on,” he said, shaking his head. “Why would a squirrel come in the house?”

I shrugged.

“I think It was looking for the platypus.”

Shadow on the Moon!

BY DENNIS MAMMANA Week of November 14-20, 2021 Night owls and insomniacs will be the only ones to witness a rare cosmic alignment this week.

On the night of Nov. 18 and the morning of Nov. 19, the full moon will drift slowly into the shadow of the Earth, creating a beautiful partial eclipse of the moon.

At 10:02 p.m. PST (1:02 a.m. EST) that night, the moon will enter the Earth’s light outer shadow called the penumbra, but this is so thin that no one will notice a darkening of the moon’s appearance.

Within an hour or so, that will change. As the moon approaches the dark inner shadow of the Earth, known as the umbra, sky watchers will notice the eastern side of the moon beginning to darken slightly.

The real show begins at 11:18 p.m.

PST (2:18 a.m. EST) when the moon officially enters the umbra. No one gazing skyward will have any doubt that a “bite” has been taken out of the moon -- a bite that will grow larger with each passing minute.

For more than an hour, the moon will dim as it enters more deeply into our planet’s umbra until 1:02 a.m. PST (4:02 p.m. EST) when it reaches its maximum eclipse. Because the moon will be 97% covered, this is officially a partial eclipse, but to most, it will look quite total.

During mid-eclipse, the moon will take on strange, coppery hue. This color occurs because sunlight passing through our atmosphere is reddened and bent inward toward the darkened surface of the eclipsed moon. Just how red and dim it appears depends on and how dark your sky is and how transparent our planet’s atmosphere is at the time. It could appear anywhere from bright orange to nearly invisible.

You can watch the sky show from even under bright city lights but, for a truly dramatic view, head out to dark rural skies. When you arrive there, of course, the sky will be washed out with brilliant moonlight, and you will see very few stars.

But just wait! During mid-eclipse, the brilliant stars of winter will burst into view, and you’ll see the ruddy orb of the moon suspended just below the shimmering star cluster known as the Pleiades, or Seven Sisters.

After the eclipse reaches its maximum, the moon will begin to recede from the shadow. The partial phase will last until 2:47 a.m. PST (5:47 a.m. EST), and some eclipse watchers on the East Coast will have a treat as they watch the partially eclipsed moon setting in the west.

Flourless Chocolate Cookies Serves 10 Makes 24 to 36 cookies 3 cups powdered sugar 3⁄4 natural unsweetened cocoa powder 1⁄2 teaspoon espresso powder (optional) 1⁄4 teaspoon salt 2 large egg whites, at room temperature 1 large egg, at room temperature 11⁄2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract Preheat the oven to 350 F. Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats and set aside.

In a large mixing bowl, sift the powdered sugar and unsweetened cocoa powder together, then whisk in the instant espresso powder (if using) and salt until well combined. Set aside.

In a separate mixing bowl, whisk together the

egg whites, egg, and vanilla extract until fully combined.

Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, and stir until the mixture is fully combined and smooth.

Using a 1-tablespoon cookie scoop, scoop the cookie dough onto the prepared baking sheets, making sure to leave a little room between each one.

Bake for 11 to 14 minutes, or until the tops of the cookies are set. Remove from the oven, and allow the cookies to cool completely on the baking sheets.

Store the cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.

Trick-or-treaters fill the athletic complex at Bethpage High School The smell of tasty meals from food trucks filled the air as hundreds of children in the Bethpage community dressed up in costumes to attend Bethpage High School’s Halloween at the Field on Nov. 1.

Sponsored by the school’s PTA, sports teams, clubs and other organiza-

tions from the high school were invited to create themes and decorate their own tables at the school’s athletic complex for the trick-or-treaters to visit. The complex was adorned with spooky decorations, fun activities and, of course, treats for the younger children.

There were plenty of Halloween-themed activities for children to choose from.

Friendly witches took photos with students at the athletic complex.

Mikaela Domingo ‘23, of Levittown, remembers being in her first robotics class in 11th grade and loving everything about it. It fed her fascination for building and creating moving parts. It ultimately led her to leave her home in Long Island to study Civil Engineering at York College of Pennsylvania, where she’s one of several students who will embark on a new opportunity that will continue to fuel that passion for creating.

A student research project at York College of Pennsylvania was chosen to

receive $60,819 in grant money as part of the Manufacturing PA Initiative, as announced by Gov. Tom Wolf. York College’s project-”Developing Modular Co-bot Automation Solutions for the Testing Environment”-pairs it with MRG Laboratories, a client company located in the College’s J.D. Brown Center incubator, and local manufacturer Airline Hydraulics Corporation.

“I’m excited to have this experience and maybe build something from scratch,” she said. “It’s good for the College and the companies involved.

More people will know about us and recognize the opportunities that York College provides. They didn’t go out and hire professionals to do this; they put students in the lab. I’m very grateful for that.” n
