SERVING PLAINVIEW, HICKSVILLE, AND LEVITTOWN
BAND CHAMPIONS
Bethpage students welcome local heroes BY GARY SIMEONE
On October 30, New York State Senator Steve Rhoads (right) and Legislator Rose Walker (left) celebrated the victory of Hicksville’s Marching Comets. Senator Rhoads joined the Hicksville Board of Education, Hicksville Superintendent Fulton, Legislator Rose Walker, and the Hicksville community in welcoming the Hicksville Marching Comets home after winning the NYSFBC Large School 2 championship! This marks the band’s 3rd year of winning the championship. Senator Rhoads issued a heartfelt congratulations to the marching band and applauded them for making the entire Hicksville community proud.
It was a special day for a group of students at Central Boulevard Elementary School as their classroom was visited by special guests, including a policeman, firefighter and a Nassau County paramedic. The visit was part of National First Responders Day, a holiday which honors local heroes in the community. Barbara Cataldi and Erika LeMaire, second grade teachers at Central Boulevard, invited the local heroes to their classroom as a way for students to show their appreciation and gratitude to them for their
services. “We invited them in so they could talk with the students about their professions, and they were able to answer questions about how they serve our communities on a daily basis,” said Cataldi. “The students also read a poem to them showing their gratitude towards first responders and presented them with thank-you notes to take to their home base.” The local heroes included an FDNY firefighter, Frank LeMaire, a Nassau County 5th precinct police officer, Michael DeMelfi, and a NasSee page 10
