Sunday October 3rd will be an historic day for a group of World War II veterans who requested a trip to Washington D.C. to observe a military memorial. The event was put together by the Honor Flight Long Island Network, a group with a mission of honoring our World War II veterans by flying them to the Washington D.C. WWII memorial. Bill Jones, Honor Flight Long Island president, said the group will include nine veterans, who range in the age of 90 to 100, and their family members. “These iconic trips. which are provided free to Veterans. have been on hold since March of last year due to the Coronavirus Pandemic,” said Jones. “National just lifted the pandemic restrictions last month, and now Honor Flight Long Island’s Board has unanimously decided to officially re-institute their biannual D.C. flight. We all wish these eight men and one woman God speed and good health on this historic journey to our nation’s capital.” The nine veterans, which include eight men and one woman, are all decorated war heroes and they have received various medals for their time serving our country. One of those veterans is a 98-year-old local hero from Bethpage named Vincent DePalo. DePalo served as a flight engineer in the United States Army Air Forces, working on the B-24 Liberator military and B-17 Bomber planes. “I was a technical sergeant and flight engineer during World War II. I served from October 1941 to August 1945,” said DePalo. “This will be my first time going on this trip and I'm very excited to make the journey to the military memorial in Washington D.C. and to the other sites.” During his time in the service, DePalo received multiple medals of honor, including the Presidential Unit Citation and the Good Conduct Medal, which is awarded to army personnel who had honorably completed three years of active federal military service and displayed exemplary conduct efficiency and fidelity. DePalo’s other medals included the European-Africa-Middle East Service Medal, for his time serving in the Middle East from July 28, 1942 to April 2, 1943. See page 13
