Town plans memorial ceremony for Sept. 5th

SUMMER FUN

The Town of Oyster Bay will hold a Remembrance Ceremony for the victims of the September 11, 2001 Attacks on America on Thursday, September 5th, beginning at 7 p.m. at TOBAY Beach. Additionally, at the ceremony, the Town will unveil the 9/11 Walls of Honor in memory of those with a connection to the Town who tragically lost their lives to 9/11-related cancer and illnesses. The Town Board invites all residents, families and friends to attend. The Town’s 9/11 Memorial is inscribed with the names of residents lost on September 11, 2001.

Overdose Awareness Day

The Town of Oyster Bay is partnering with Drug Free Long Island, Bikers Against Heroin and Nassau County for a Bike Ride from Syosset/ Woodbury Park to TOBAY Beach in recognition of National Overdose Awareness Day. The Bike Ride will take place on Friday, August 30 with motorcyclists invited to ride from Syosset/Woodbury Community Park down to TOBAY Beach, at which a special ceremony will be held in memory of those who have lost friends and family to overdose. visor Joseph Saladino stated, “It is so important that we work to unite our community to educate, advocate, and empower to raise awareness against the deadly effects of heroin and remember our loved ones who lost their lives to the opioid epidemic. I am proud to partner with Drug Free Long Island, Bikers Against Heroin, and Nassau County for this event, which truly helps shine a light on this ongoing issue effecting our communities.” Motorcyclists are invited to gather at 5:00 p.m. at

Syosset-Woodbury Community Park, from where they will depart at 5:30 p.m. for TOBAY Beach, which is located on Ocean Parkway, just east of Jones Beach. A special ceremony of remembrance will then commence at 6:15 p.m. at the beach. Drug Free Long Island will supply a large dreamcatcher in which residents can place a picture of a loved one lost and/or card in their memory. The Memorial features a steel beam recovered from the World Trade Center. The September 5th ceremony includes a candlelight vigil, vocal performances, bagpipe music and religious readings. In addition, the names of those lost, who are inscribed on the wall, will be read and the new 9/11 Walls of Honor memorial will be unveiled along with a reading of the names of those featured on the Walls. Man arrested for pulling over police van

Nassau County Police arrested a Hicksville man for impersonating a police officer after he tried to pull over a van - which happened to be occupied by Nassau County Police Department detectives. According to police, on Friday, August 16 at 11 a.m. Valiery Portlock, 25, of Hicksville, was traveling northbound on Hicksville Road in a black Nissan Sentra in the vicinity of Roosevelt Ave. when he activated his air horn and emergency lights in an attempt to pull over a van. The van was occupied by Nassau County Electronics Squad detectives. The detectives, while stopped in traffic, identi-

fied themselves and approached Portlock's vehicle. The detectives say that Portlock then fled the scene, swerved into oncoming traffic and refused to stop. They say he continued to drive at a high rate of speed onto the Long Island Expressway. Nassau County Highway Patrol officers were notified and soon spotted the defendant and initiated a traffic stop. Valiery Portlock was placed under arrest without incident. Valiery Portlock is charged with Criminal Impersonation 1st Degree, Reckless Endangerment 2nd Degree and Unlawful Fleeing from a Police Officer as well as multiple VTL violations.
