more.

Held in thousands of communities each year on the first Tuesday in August, National Night Out is an initiative that seeks to promote “police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live.”

Educational camps keep kids active during summer

BY GARY SIMEONE For many students in the Levittown school district, this summer has so far consisted of historical and marine life expeditions, as well as learning to

be an instrumental musician. Over a hundred kids in grades 4–8 participated in a variety of district run camps that enriched their minds and learning experiences.

No safe harbor for hate

To the Editor: On Sunday, July 25, I had the distinct honor and privilege to celebrate the opening of the beautiful Gurudwara Shaheedan of Hicksville and rejoice in the spirit of peace, love and light embraced by our brothers and sisters of the Sikh community.

Last week, we learned that a gurdwara under construction in New Hyde Park was the target of disgusting, racist vandalism. Worse yet, as reported by the Washington Post, the Sikh Coalition noted the vandalism occurred days before the ninth anniversary of the Oak Creek gurdwara mass shooting in Wisconsin, when on Aug. 5, 2012, a gunman with links to neo-Nazi groups killed six worshipers.

This most recent incident is sadly emblematic of the targeted hatred that so many in the Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) community have endured throughout the COVID-19 pan-

demic. That is why I filed legislation this spring to update County law to specifically outlaw discrimination based on an actual or perceived relationship to the pandemic and empower victims of discrimination to sue for compensatory and punitive damages and other relief deemed appropriate by the court.

Unfortunately, since that time, the measure has languished without a public hearing. I once again urge my colleagues in the Majority to bring this measure to the floor of the Legislature so that it can be debated, approved, and sent to the County Executive’s desk.

Hate has no place in Nassau County, and I proudly stand with the Sikh community today and always. Police are asking anyone with information about the New Hyde Park incident to call Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.

Homeowners cleanup, paper shredding day The Town of Oyster Bay will host a Homeowners Cleanup Program and Paper Shredding Day at its Solid Waste Disposal Complex on Saturday, August 14, located at 101 BethpageSweet Hollow Road in Old Bethpage.

The cleanup will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

“The Homeowners Cleanup Program offers a perfect opportunity for residents within the Town’s Solid Waste Disposal District to dispose of unwanted, non-hazardous debris that’s cluttering up their homes, garages and sheds” said Town Councilman Tom Hand. “Papershredding services are also available to help protect your privacy when disposing of information paperwork.

All paper shreds are recycled.”

The Paper-Shredding Program is limited to three banker size boxes per resident and is open only to Town of Oyster Bay residents, not commercial businesses. Only one visit per day is allowed for the paper shredding program.

Proof of district residency must be shown upon arrival at the Homeowners Cleanup Program (the villages of Bayville, Brookville, Centre Island, Cove

Neck, Lattingtown, Laurel Hollow, Matinecock, Mill Neck, Muttontown, Old Brookville, Oyster Bay Cove, Roslyn Harbor, Sea Cliff, Upper Brookville, Glenwood-Glen Head Garbage District and Old Westbury are not in the Town’s Solid Waste District). No hazardous waste will be accepted, and bushes, tree limbs, fence posts and similar items will be accepted as is and need not be broken into smaller pieces. Used tires, large metal items, clean fill, clean broken concrete, and boats and boat trailers will also be accepted. The Homeowners and Shredding programs are for homeowners only. No businesses, no commercial vehicles, and NO vehicles with more than four wheels will be permitted to enter. Six wheel or larger vehicles are not permitted. Homeowners may also bring non-hazardous water based Latex paint and electronic waste to be recycled to the Homeowners Cleanup program.

Town of OB offers ancestry research services Town of Oyster Bay residents who wish to engage in some form of family research may do so through ancestral services offered by his office.

Residents can fill out a form to search birth, death, and marriage records for genealogical purposes, and these early vital records might just provide the piece of information about ancestors that you’ve been seeking.

Oyster Bay Town Clerk Rich LaMarca stated, “In recent years, ancestral research has become one of the world’s most popular hobbies and countless people around the world are actively engaged in some form of developing a family tree.

Whether it’s to satisfy a curiosity about oneself, provide children with a sense of who their ancestors were or to compile a medical history, people are trying to get in touch with their roots. Vital records are the cornerstone of genealogical research, and my office is proud to provide dates and locations of events in the

life of an ancestor, as well as other useful data.”

The Town of Oyster Bay maintains records dating back to 1881.

To protect the privacy of the living, birth records will not be released unless the record has been on file for at least 75 years and the person to whom the record relates is deceased.

Death records will not be released unless the record has been on file for at least 50 years. Additionally, marriage records will not be released unless the record has been on file for at least 50 years and both parties to the marriage are known to be deceased. The fee for a genealogical search varies depending on the number of years requested to be searched and can range from $22–$162.

At a special ceremony held at the Syosset office of David Lerner Associates (DLA) on August 9, DLA and the Greater Long Island Running Club (GLIRC) presented a couple of checks to a couple of important Nassau County Police related causes.

First, a $1000 check was presented to the Nassau County Police Running Club for its ongoing Scholarship Fund.

Secondly, at the heartfelt request of NCPD’s 7th Precinct, a check in the amount of $1500 was presented to Carrie Klipera, a crossing guard assigned to the 7th Precinct.

Carrie, her husband, four sons and mother suffered a devastating house fire on July 24. Thankfully, everyone got out of the home safely, but the house and its contest were completely destroyed, leaving the family scrambling to find a temporary place to live as well as the wherewithal to rebuild to supplement the amount that their insurance coverage will provide.

As always, thanks to DLA and everyone who participated in the annual David Lerner Associates Long Island Police Appreciation 5 Kilometer Run, the money is there to help any of our Long Island police families who fall on hard times. In the 40 years that the Run has been staged, DLA and GLIRC have been able to donate about $500,000 to police officers and their families and other police-related causes in times of need.

A summer boost for literacy in Levittown

From becoming more fluent readers to deepening their vocabularies, it has been a productive summer for approximately 25 English language learners in the Levittown School District who are taking part in the summer ENL program.

Held at the Levittown Memorial Education Center, the program services elementary students to give them extra support during the summer vacation.

“We hope that they improve their literacy skills and are better prepared for the next school year,” said Michele Ortiz, director of world languages and ENL. She added that the primary native languages of students in the program are Mandarin Chinese, Punjabi, Spanish and Urdu.

The program is two hours a day for three weeks. Students work on their understanding of grammar, recognition of sight words, reading comprehension skills, writing abilities and vocabulary

growth. Resources they use include workbooks, writing notebooks and flashcards.

Anna Razza, a teaching assistant at Summit Lane Elementary School, is working with children entering second grade. She focuses on two letters of the alphabet per day and has her students writing their own stories, completing a few pages each week. ENL teacher Jessica Wimmer reads books aloud to her group, helping students understand sentence structure and learn new words.

Musicians blossom in Levittown’s summer program

Nearly 130 young musicians in the Levittown School District are practicing their craft during the six-week Summer Music Program at Abbey Lane Elementary School. The program is open to students in third grade and up, whether they are learning an instrument for the first time or have several years of experience.

Megan Bastos, a band teacher at East Broadway Elementary School, is coordinator of the Summer Music Program

Students entering third and fourth grade are learning an instrument for the first time, so the summer program gives them a chance to begin the school year with some basic knowledge. For older students in the program, many have already mastered an instrument and are now learning a second one this summer.

Educational camps keep kids active during summer months From page 1 Marine Biology Camp and the Summer Music program.

“These are parent-paid sustaining programs that are run by teachers in our district,” said Winch. “They offer a variety of activities and hands on learning opportunities for our students throughout the summer months.”

After last year’s camps were canceled due to the pandemic, students were eager to check out Long island’s vast history and culture as well as its abundance of marine life.

For the weeklong Marine Biology camp, students traveled to Caumsett State Park in Lloyd Harbor and to Freeport for a boat ride. They spent time learning about Long Island’s glacial origins as well as the geographical differences of the north and south shores.

Sean Doyle, a student at Salk Middle School, said about Marine Biology camp “the camp experience was great! It was hard to pick a favorite day because they were all awesome. If I had to choose, my favorite day was the salt marsh day.

We were able to explore a salt marsh and caught a lot of small fish and other organisms in a seine net.”

The Adventures in Local History program took place from July 26–30, and it consisted of day-long field trips to culturally significant institutions.

Students departed on buses from Wisdom Lane Middle School at eight thirty in the morning, and traveled to destinations including Garvies Point Preserve and Museum, Bailey Arboretum in Locust Valley, and the Long Island Holocaust Museum and Tolerance Center.

“Before they boarded the buses in the morning, one of our teachers, Melisa Baker, gave the students a mini-lesson on some of the historical locations on our island,” said Winch.

Megan Bastos, a band director in the Seaford School District, helped coordinate the music program last month.

“The Levittown Summer Music program teaches students from all levels in the district the fundamentals of being an instrumental musician,” said Bastos. “Beginning students are given two half hour lessons where they learn the basics of playing an instrument. Our intermediate and advanced students are given similar lessons where they further develop proficiency on their instrument and collaborate with each other for an orchestra performance, which takes place end of the summer.”

Sophia DalloJacono and Ysabella Bendigo, two beginning violin students, said the program helped them to develop their music skills further.

“What I liked most about the class is when we used our sheet music to learn and play the notes,” said DalloJacono.

Bendigo said her favorite part was “I really like how we get to play with the bow of the instrument.”

Discovery Bicycle’s 6-Day Coast of Maine Tour Delights the Senses

BY KAREN RUBIN TRAVEL FEATURES SYNDICATE GOINGPLACESFARANDNEAR.COM When I finally reach the summit of Cadillac Mountain, Acadia National Park’s highest point at 1500 ft., having huffed and puffed my way by bike up the 3.5-mile long, ever-rising winding road, little kids come up to me with amazement. “We passed you on the road. You rode up here!”

I must confess to beaming with pride while also taking in the view. Looking down to the ocean, Bar Harbor and the Bar Harbor Inn where we started our ride some 20 miles and several hours earlier, I realize, “Wait a minute, we rode from there!” The view is amazing, but having that physical, mental achievement is all the more satisfying.

That is what a bike tour is. The scenery, the attractions, the things you see and do are all amazing, but when you bike, there is that added component of being physically and mentally engaged.

Biking up Cadillac Mountain is the pinnacle of Discovery Bicycle Tour’s six-day Coast of Maine bike tour - and a peak of personal accomplishment - but each day presents its own series of highlights and delights.

After all, this is Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park on Maine’s Mount Desert Island, with one of the prettiest sea coasts anywhere.

The daily itineraries are outstanding - each day’s route so carefully designed for a great ride, interesting attractions, gorgeous scenery.

This is my second Discovery Bicycle Tour and I just love the way

So each day, along with the printed cue sheets and a talk reviewing key elements of the ride, we are equipped with the RideGPS application which gives us voice commands for the route on our phone, just like your GPS. This means we ride at our own pace, stop for photos or take a breath, take in the view, hike a trail, or just smell the roses. The guides never

pressure you to keep with the group or finish the ride at a certain time.

One of the two guides rides sweep to make sure everyone is okay, and the other drives the van along the route (where possible). They make every accommodation for riders, so when feasible, even shuttling some to the top of a slope, or on one day, starting three miles further.

Another aspect of the way Discovery designs its itinerary is that it adds a lovely mix of other activities to round out the experience: a sunset sail on the historic schooner, Mary Todd; sea kayaking, a hike (we choose to walk across the land bridge at low tide to Bar Island) and on our last morning, they reserve a 4:30 a.m. drive up Cadillac

Both our guides, Cindy Burke and Tom Walsh are long-time veteran bike tour guides and particularly of this Coast of Maine itinerary, and fill us with marvelous insights into the history and people of the island, as well as point out specific parts of that day’s ride. And they have a particular challenge, having to re-jigger the rides inside Acadia after June storms forced the closure of the Eagle Lake carriage roads.

On our first day, we are encouraged to arrive by 1 pm for an orientation, getting fitted to our bikes and then an optional 9.9-mile “Schooner Head Overlook Warm-up Ride” on the Park Loop Road in Acadia – except that it is raining. We decide to do it anyway and even when the rain becomes a real downpour, it is tremendous fun (and so fantastic to go into the Bar Harbor Inn’s heated pool and hot tub after). And it shows us, yes, we can ride hills in the rain!

For our Day 2 ride, we are ferried by van to the start at Seal Cove Auto Museum, where they have pre-arranged our admission. The museum has an outstanding collection that includes automobiles that are the last of their kind (a 1913 Peugeot is worth $3-5 million; a 1905 Pierce Great Arrow is very rare). But what makes the visit even more fascinating is the special exhibit, “Engines of Change: A Suffrage Centennial.”

A stunning scene is at Thurston’s Lobster Pound.

Another highlight is the Bass Harbor Lighthouse, the only lighthouse within Acadia National Park and one of the most photographed in Maine; the scenic Seawall Picnic area, and into charming Southwest Harbor, where the van returns us to the Bar Harbor Inn.

Day 3’s ride also begins with us being ferried to the start, to the “quiet side” of Mount Desert Island, for a delightful ride along the scenic coastal Sargeant’s Drive, passing lovely “cottages” into Northeast Harbor, a quick visit to the Asticou Azalea Gardens before we enter Arcadia National Park and ride the Carriage Roads. We get to the renowned Jordan Pond House (famous for popovers, but the crowds are ridiculous) and here we can choose to take an 8.2 mile extension to Day Mountain, with a 694-foot elevation.

Day 6 (Friday), the getaway day, offers a pleasant 10-mile ride on the Duck Brook Carriage Roads, passing beaver ponds and the scenic Eagle Lake. But before, Discovery has arranged a ride up to Cadillac Mountain for sunrise.

We have enough time each afternoon to really enjoy the historic Bar Harbor Inn (it dates from 1887), which hands down has to be one of my very favorite places to stay in Bar Harbor – luxurious but cozy, exquisitely landscaped, a stunning (heated) infinity pool with one of the prettiest views in the world, a spa, a dining room with picture windows out to the water where we have lavish breakfasts (and a choice

to have continental-style breakfast in the pool house). The hotel is magnificently poised on the point overlooking Frenchman Bay and the Shore Path, walking distance to Bar Harbor’s shops and restaurants, and all our rooms are oceanfront with a balcony.

Everything about the Discovery Bicycle tour is topnotch - on three nights, we enjoy wonderful dinners in some of Bar Harbor’s best restaurants and for two of our rides, we are provided box lunches we pre-ordered to take with us.

The ride is billed as “easier to intermediate,” but it is best if you do not expect the rides to be easy or expect that “coastal Maine” has anything “flat.” There are lots of ups and downs – mostly short - and the rides are definitely do-able if you have the right mental framework (“I can do it.”). The two really long climbs, Day Mountain and Cadillac Mountain, are offered as options.

Rose Questions

Summer is rose time, so let’s answer some of your questions about roses.

Q: My roses are dropping their leaves. They turn yellow and fall off.

What can I do?

A: Take a close look at the leaves. Are they just turning yellow, or do they have some black spots on the yellow leaves?

If they are just yellow, there are several possible causes. Overwatering or just too much water around the roots due to poor drainage is one reason. Too hot of a location, especially in the afternoon, or the opposite of too much shade will both cause

leaves to turn yellow and fall off. If there is not enough nitrogen in the soil, the lower leaves turn yellow and drop off.

If there are black spots, the leaves are infected with a fungal disease appropriately called black spot. Leaves that stay too wet due to irrigation or rain, especially in a spot that doesn’t get much air circulation, are more likely to get black spot. Cut off any infected leaves and discard them. If you can’t change the watering or air circulation, you could try newer rose varieties that are resistant to fungal diseases, or you can spray the plants with fungicides that list black spot on the label.

Q: My new rose plant only flowered once in the spring and hasn’t bloomed since even though the plant is growing new branches. Does it need fertilizer?

A: Maybe, but it could also be a rose that only blooms once per year. Old rose species such as the gallicas, damasks and mosses bloom only once each summer.

The flowering stems are borne on old wood. They should be pruned after they bloom. A few canes can be removed at ground level or the whole plant can be cut back by one-third to one-half. If they are grafted varieties, prune above the graft.

If you think your roses need fertilizer,

follow the label directions for the rose food you purchase. Make sure not to use the fertilizer after late summer to avoid causing the rose plant to grow too much in the fall when the new growth could be damaged by a frost.

Q: I bought my wife a supposedly fragrant rose for Mother’s Day. The flowers don’t smell at all. I can’t take it back, so how do we get it to have the fragrance the catalog said it would have?

A: If you are sure the plant is the proper variety that is supposed to be fragrant, then I am sure it will be. A newly planted rose and any other rose that is under stress may not produce much fragrance.

The plant uses the energy and nutrients it is producing to try to stay alive and fragrance chemicals are not part of that equation.

If the plant is otherwise healthy, it will produce fragrant flowers. If it is not growing well because of insects, diseases or a bad growing environment such as not enough water or too much heat, then you will need to fix that problem first.

Q: We have a weird rose. Sometimes the flowers are mostly pink and sometimes they are mostly yellow. This is not the same flower turning colors as

it ages. It is the same plant with different colors of flowers at different times of the year. Is this common or is it something that a rose grower would like to know about?

A: Your plant is not as weird as you might hope. There are rose varieties that change flower colors based on the heat in the weather that the flower develops in. Some change rather dramatically and others have darker richer flower colors in cooler weather.

An Arch Enemy

BY TOM BRENNAN When I was a kid, I always liked the idea of having an arch-enemy. An arch-enemy is a special kind of foe, one who is relentless in the singular pursuit of evil. A real-deal arch enemy then concentrates that ingrained malice exclusively on one person. Okay, I will admit that I was heavily influenced by two of the great lures of my youth, a youth as spent in the late forties and early fifties in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn.

Along with almost every kid of my generation, I eagerly sat poised by the family radio to hear the great voices of radio superheroes, and then, when I had any money, I traipsed around the corner to Jake’s Candy Store to get the latest Superman / Batman comic book. Any superhero worth his personalized cape always had an arch-enemy who was as impervious to destruction as Superman’s Lex Luthor.

Even Sherlock Holmes had his villainous Dr. Moriarity.

Batman may have had a wider array of colorful and determined arch-enemies, but it was Superman that held the crown in radio arch-enemy lore.

Radio and comic books had a lot in common as they both fueled the imagination and perpetuated the idea that maybe; just maybe, you just might be

singular and deemed worthy of pursuit by such an aggressive villain.

Unfortunately, the only real enemy I could rely upon was a certain Mrs. Pine who generally sat perched vigilantly by her top floor window in the apartment house directly next to mine. If she were not shouting down at us: “Hey you kids, stop that playing!” or words to that effect, she used her own version of speed dial to the 80th precinct to put an end to any improvised stickball game.

Okay, she wasn’t a real arch-enemy, but somehow I made her that. Mrs. Pine became my own personal villain. The fact that in those simpler times the police would actually respond to such calls only heightened the extent of her nefarious powers.

Of course the greatest arch villain of all time was Margaret Hamilton’s, Elmira Gulch as seen in “The Wizard of Oz.” I liked the concept that this witch, who by definition is naturally wicked, is so malicious in her intent that she needs that extra adjective: she is indeed the wicked witch.

My initial acquaintance with Elmira requires an explanation. Every Saturday morning without fail, I would walk up to the nearby National Theater on Washington Avenue, with my twelve cents where the mar-

quee bill was always the same: two westerns, a Flash Gordon kind of serial, and at least ten cartoons.

I generally tried to get there early, but on this particular Saturday in the very early nineteen fifties, I turned the corner only to find a much longer line than usual, and I quickly looked up at the marquee for an explanation thinking that perhaps we were to be treated by a double feature starring my all-time favorite cowboy, Roy Rogers. But no, the marquee simply read, “The Wizard Of Oz.” Although a big hit in 1939 when it opened, here in the very early fifties with no DVD’s or home videos, I suspect that I was not alone in having no idea why this film was such a big draw.

I rank myself high in confidently jumping to false conclusions and this time was no exception. Having an inexhaustible reception to westerns, and recognizing the consistency of the National Theater’s Saturday morning venue, I optimistically leapt to the premise that Oz was a ranch and the wizard was some special kind of superior cowboy who ran the spread. No wonder the long line. I was eager.

The layout for a Saturday morning children’s matinee was always the same: only the two side sections could be used for children’s matinee viewing, and the middle rows with the best view of the screen would remain a noticeably empty.

The balcony was totally out of bounds. I also assumed that only the most hardened of the matrons would be on duty. These grim faced, gray haired, solid looking ladies were always clad in crisp white attire like they were nurses, or more likely, ex-prison guards.

They seemed fully prepared to monitor this excitable and basically unruly crowd. The only thing missing from their disciplinarian image was a cattle prod.

However, on this particular Saturday morning there was a huge overflow, and in the confusion I became separated from my friends, and so, for the first and only time in my National Theater career, I was directed to the center aisle seats where I sat contentedly by myself in the middle

seat of the middle row. I had absolutely no expectations of what was to come, but during the early minutes of the film, I felt a keen sense of betrayal as these scenes seemed to indicate that we were to be exposed to something a girl might like, something along the lines of ‘Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm.’

I could hear an audible grown from other kids in the audience whose acute senses were as keen to such deceptions as mine. A, “what’s this, we’re being set up,” kind of attitude pervaded during these opening moments of the film.

Unwittingly, I had run into the movie entertainment version of the perfect storm. But happily, I would soon meet the all-time embodiment of an arch enemy in the flesh. The scene of the determined Elmira still perched on her bicycle while furiously peddling in the midst of the fierce storm in her relentless pursuit of Dorothy, and then suddenly transforming herself into the Witch of the East, remains riveting each time I see it.

Later, I felt that everything had been arranged that morning in an otherworldly mode exclusively to entertain me in a manner that was nothing short of powerful and dramatic in its impact. No other movie I would ever see would come close to this singular experience.

The contrast of walking out of the theater into the bright sunlight reflecting glaringly off the sidewalks of Washington Avenue, while still enthralled by my experience has never left me. Whenever I see that scene wherein Dorothy cowers near her bed upon seeing her nemesis Elmira Cultch transform herself into the very embodiment of a terribly wicked witch that Dorothy always suspected Elmira really was, has staying power. With each viewing I am once again back there in my middle seat as a young boy rapt with real enchantment and lured into the enchantment of this magical story.

In a sense the scene has become my magic carpet, transporting me back in time, and I am with Dorothy as the scene unfolds, totally and forever transfixed by her dilemma. I shared her wary apprehension as she slowly begins to move forward and very cautiously opens her transplanted bedroom door that used to be in Kansas that has now been transported to a strange land of vibrant color.

How To Handle Social Security Affairs When Someone Dies

BY TOM MARGENAU I wrote a column about a year ago based on an email from an 85-year-old woman whose husband of 60 years was near death. She was asking me how to deal with Social Security matters after he passed away. That column struck a chord with many people. For example, many readers told me they were going to keep a copy of that column in their records for future reference.

But I’ve gotten many emails since from other readers who must have missed that column because they are asking me the same kinds of questions.

So today, I thought I would once again review the Social Security-related steps that need to be taken when a loved one dies.

The first issue I will cover is what to do with the final Social Security check for the deceased. And to do so, I must start out making two points. First, Social Security checks are paid one month behind. So, for example, the check you get in August is the benefit payment for July.

Second, Social Security benefits have never been prorated. I’ve explained before how this lack of proration can help out when someone first starts getting Social Security. For example, if you took benefits at age 66 and you turned 66 on June 28, you would get a check for the whole month of June even though you are only 66 for 3 days of the month. On the other hand, if your spouse dies on June 28, you would not be due the proceeds of that June Social Security check even though he or she was alive for 28 days of the month.

But there is a flip side to that perceived drawback to Social Security’s proration rules. And it could be good news for any survivors due benefits on the deceased’s Social Security account. Let’s say that Bill died on June 28. If his wife, Sarah, was due widow’s benefits, she would be paid those benefits for the whole month of June, even though she was a widow for only three days of the month.

So, to repeat, when someone dies, the Social Security check for the month of death must be returned. But that’s only if you get the check in the first place.

I added that qualifier because there is a very good chance the check won’t even show up in the deceased’s bank account.

As you may have heard, there are all kinds of computer-matching operations that go on between various government agencies and banks. So if the Treasury Department learns of a person’s death in time, they won’t even issue the Social Security benefit. Or, if the check was issued, the bank will likely intercept the payment and return it to the government before it even hits the deceased’s checking account. In other words, you usually don’t have to worry about returning any Social Security checks. It’s almost always done for you.

There can be a little twist to this scenario though. For example, let’s say that Henry died on July 2. And let’s further say that his Social Security check was normally sent to him on the third of each month. In other words, Henry died just before his Social Security check was deposited into his bank account. Because he was alive the whole month of June, that means he was due the money from that June check. And now his widow or his estate is due that money. So that June Social Security benefit would have to be returned to the Social Security Administration. Then it will be reissued to the widow or to the estate. (There is a form that needs to be filled out to get that to happen. Talk to an SSA rep about that.)

So far, I’ve been talking about dealing with the last Social Security check that was sent to the deceased. Now let’s talk about getting any Social Security survivor benefits that might be due. Unless they are due higher benefits on their own Social Security accounts, widows and widowers are due full benefits at their full retirement age or reduced benefits as early as age 60 if they are not working.

But the most common scenario involves couples who were both getting Social Security benefits at the time of death of one of the spouses. The easiest way to explain what happens is with examples.

Fred died. He was getting Social Security retirement benefits. And his wife, Wilma, was getting just a spousal benefit.

In other words, she didn’t have enough work credits to get her own Social Security benefit. In this case, the process is pretty simple. No widow’s application is required. Wilma simply notifies the SSA of Fred’s death and they just push of few buttons to switch her from wife’s benefits to widow’s benefits. As part of the process, she may have to provide a copy of the death certificate. I say “may have to provide” because there is a chance the SSA will already have some proof of death in their files. Assuming Wilma was over “full retirement age,” she will just start getting whatever Fred was getting at the time of death. (But if he started his Social Security at age 62, Wilma will actually get a little more. Fred would have been getting a rate equal to 75% of his full benefit, and Wilma is guaranteed to get at least 82% of his full benefit.)

If Wilma was getting her own retirement benefit that was less than Fred’s rate, she will get bumped up to that higher amount. And she would have to file an application to get those widow’s benefits.

It’s really not very hard. There is one little twist. Widow’s claims cannot be filed online. So Wilma would have to contact the SSA at 800-772-1213 to file her claim over the phone. In addition to a death certificate, Wilma may also have to provide a copy of her marriage certificate.

There is also the matter of the $255 death benefit. I’m always embarrassed talking about this one-time payment be-

cause it is so miserly. There is a long history to this benefit I’ve discussed many times in this column, so I won’t rehash it here today. Suffice it to say, the rate has been set at the $255 level for about 50 years now. A half century ago, it might have gone a long way towards paying for a funeral. Today, it barely covers the cost of the flowers draping the casket.

But no matter how stingy it is, the benefit is still there. However, a number of years ago, Congress passed a law saying

it can only be paid to a widow or widower who was living with the deceased. So if someone dies and there is no spouse, the $255 death benefit cannot be paid.

How have home prices done year over year?

RAICES Unless you’re not watching the news on TV, or aren’t reading any newspaper or online information, your head might be in the sand, if you don’t know that prices on homes have continued to increase quarter over quarter and year over year. Even the jobs report today was absolutely astounding, whereby we hit an historic all-time high of over 1+million jobs created in June 2021! This bodes well for the majority of markets for goods and services. Real Estate is also the beneficiary of all this superb news!

Demand is still @ a 50+ year high, interest rates have dipped below 3% the other week, as I was able to secure a 2.75% mortgage for a client through my mortgage person Derek Kam of Green River Capital, who is as sharp as a tack and as professional as they come when comparing his knowledge, expertise and client service skills!

The following charts and graphs provide a clear and concise picture of where prices were and where they are currently, with no end in sight.

Builders would have to build a minimum of 2,000,000 homes per year to equal the current demand and future demand. As it is, we need a minimum of 500,000 additional homes to try to cool off demand today.

The average home cost rose to $63,300 in June.

That’s nearly a $70,000 escalation in price compared to June in 2020!* The number of homes actively listed for sale in the U.S. are down 43% in relation to 2020*.

Homes in 2019 were selling quite briskly in 38 days and in 2020 the existing homes were selling in 21 days and currently it has been reduced to 17 days*!

If is very obvious that the market is steaming full speed ahead at least in Nassau County as well as Suffolk, Queens and upstate too. City statistics are getting a bit better as people begin to move back into NYC and other major cities, but retail and office space is still in difficult times. However, it surely appears that the economy in itself is coming back very strong and the there are now less than 6,000,000 people unemployed down from 8,000,000+. However, I am a bit weary on the inflation numbers because food and energy are not included in the statistics because they change so rapidly and are never part of the “core” inflation for goods and services and even health care. But it’s a bit complicated.

However, if you figure out that gas has gone up approximately $1.14 as per GasBuddy.com prices for gas locally from 2020 when I paid $1.97 per gallon

when no one was driving. Food has also gone up too. How about wood and the material costs to build homes has added$35,000 to the equation. Lastly new and used car prices have also gone up due to the shortage of computer chips. So anyone that thinks inflation is 5+%, I got a great deal, I have a bridge I can sell you too!

The Perseids Are Coming!

I always enjoy August.

For one thing, I can finally see an end to the searing desert heat where I live.

For another, the Milky Way appears stunning in the night sky.

But my favorite reason for enjoying

August is that I get to write a word that I can use only once a year.

“Thither.”

This word comes up every year around this time because this is when we’re approaching the annual Perseid meteor shower. You see, it was the ancient Chinese sky watchers who first documented

this meteor shower in 36 A.D. and wrote that “more than one hundred meteors flew thither in the morning.” They used a corresponding word in Chinese, but you get the idea.

The New Lexicon Webster’s Dictionary of the English Language defines the word “thither” as an adverb that means

“to or toward that place.” And I suspect that the “place” to which they referred was the shower’s “radiant” -- the region of the sky from which all shower meteors appear to originate.

Most are specks no larger than a grain of sand and are extinguished at heights of 50 miles or higher.

Stand outside during any meteor shower and you’ll see meteors (also called falling or shooting stars) all over the sky, but if you trace their paths

backward, you’ll discover that they all appear to come from one location in the sky. This is called the shower’s “radiant” and is often named for the constellation in which it lies. And that’s why this month’s shower is known as the Perseids; its radiant lies in the constellation of Perseus. Any meteor that appears to come from elsewhere are called “sporadic” meteors and are flecks of dust not part of the Swift-Tuttle swarm.

This year’s peak occurs during the early morning hours of Thursday, Aug. 12. Typically, we spot most meteors before dawn. This isn’t a conspiracy to pre-

vent evening stargazers from enjoying the show; it occurs because only during those hours do we face the direction of our planet’s motion, which means we can watch as we sweep up meteoric particles. During its peak hours, stargazers under a dark rural sky should be able to count as many as one or two every minute -- all appearing to come from the general direction of the constellation Perseus in the northeast.

For the best view, many people camp in the mountains or country or set up on rural roads away from traffic. The best tools to observe the shower are just our

eyes, but binoculars might be helpful to check out long smoke trails left behind by any rare exploding fireballs. Be sure to take a lawn chair or sleeping bag, a blanket or hot chocolate to keep warm and gaze up toward the northern and northeastern sky.

It will certainly be an enjoyable time under the stars, but don’t expect to hear someone utter the word “thither”. Unless, of course, I happen to be nearby!

Tips for Helping Elderly Parents With Their Finances

BY CARRIE SCHWAB-POMERANTZ Dear Carrie: My parents are in their early 80s. Fortunately, they’re in relatively good health and still quite independent, but I want to help them be prepared should things change. How can I get involved with their finances without being intrusive? -- A Reader Dear Reader: While popular wisdom might say that 80 is the new 60, the reality of aging means that no matter how young we may feel now, chances are we’re going to need some type of help in the future. And while it’s often difficult to get older adults to accept that possibility, being prepared ahead of time is the best way to ease the transition.

That said, money can be a touchy subject at any age, so you’re wise to be sensitive to your parents’ desire for independence and their potential reluctance to discuss the future. But the realities of today -- particularly the prevalence of scams targeting the elderly -- mean it’s more important than ever to get the conversation going.

Start by Asking Your Parents About Their Current Financial Security A lot of families don’t like to talk about money. But if you come from a position of concern for your parents’ well-being, they might feel more comfortable. And at their age, it only makes sense for them to share certain financial details with their family. Here are some questions to start with: -- Are they easily handling everyday expenses? Do they have enough income to cover the essentials -- or even things like a gym membership that help them thrive? If they’re struggling to stay on top of bills or debts, you might help them create a more realistic budget or set up automatic payments for certain monthly expenses. You may take something like autopay for granted, but your parents may not have considered it.

-- Do they have a financial adviser?

Would they be willing to introduce you

and perhaps include you in a meeting?

If they don’t have an adviser, maybe you can take the lead in helping them make a simple financial plan. At the very least, you might help them take an inventory of their financial resources -- pensions, individual retirement accounts, brokerage accounts and Social Security benefits -- so they have a clear idea of the money they have available for both the short and long term.

-- Have they updated their estate plan? Perhaps you’ve already talked to them about whether or not they have an estate plan in place, including an advance health care directive and powers of attorney for both finances and health care decisions. If not, don’t hesitate to bring it up. A basic estate plan is something everyone should have, no matter their age -- yourself included. If they have a plan, when was the last time they reviewed it? Have things changed since then?

-- Are important documents accessible? In case of emergency, it’s important that you or someone else whom your parents trust be able to locate important documents. These can include wills, trusts, bank and brokerage statements, insurance policies, mortgage documents and safe-deposit box information, as well as passwords for online accounts.

When introducing these topics, make it clear that you’re not questioning their capability; you just want to be a resource should they need help.

Discuss Their Views on Future Living Arrangements The 90-year-old mother of a friend of mine is adamant that she wants to stay in her own home no matter what. On the other end of the spectrum, another friend’s parents decided to move into a continuing care retirement community before it became necessary because they wanted to make the decision while they were still capable. You might want to talk to your parents about their preference should they need physical help.

Position it as just an exploration of fu-

ture possibilities -- not any recommendation on your part.

If they’re open to the idea of moving into a senior community at some point, now might be the time to do a little research together on senior living facilities in their area.

Plan Ahead for the Cost of Care Home care and assisted living are both costly propositions. According to the Genworth 2018 Annual Cost of Care Survey, the national median annual cost for assisted living is $48,000.

A home health aide is slightly higher at $50,336. And so much depends on where you live. In the San Francisco Bay Area, those home care costs are closer to $70,000 a year. In Alabama, they’re under $40,000. And these costs are generally per person.

From a practical standpoint, it makes sense to discuss your parents’ desires and the potential costs ahead of time so they know what their real options are. While future care can be an emotional flashpoint, it’s also an important financial consideration. They -- and you -- should know what they’re able to afford and whether you might need to supplement any costs.

Know What Benefits and Services Are Available According to the Council on Aging, there are more than 2,500 benefits programs nationwide to help with the cost of elder care. And it’s easy to do an online benefits checkup. The Family Care Navigator provided by the National Care Giver Alliance can also help you find support services in your state. Benefits.gov and your local Area Agency on Aging are also helpful resources.

Be On the Alert for Abuse Financial fraud is a very real threat these days. According to the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association, seniors in the U.S. lose an estimated $2.9 billion every year in financial exploitation. And that’s only the reported cases. While senior investor protection laws are in place in many states and more are in the

works, I think everyone needs to be on the alert for any kind of potential scam.

SIFMA is a good resource for specifics on what to watch out for and action you can take.

Be sure to discuss this with your parents. As a precaution, it might be wise at some point for you or another trusted family member to have your name on some of your parents’ accounts to monitor transactions.

Have a Family Meeting You don’t say if you have siblings, but if you do, it’s important that all of you are aware of your parents’ situation and desires and agree on who is going to take the lead. It’s important for two reasons: to assure there’s no misunderstanding or disagreement if your parents do need help in the future and to make sure that whoever takes the lead gets the support they need in what could be a very difficult situation.

Keep Talking -- and Listening In sensitive situations like this, it’s all about communication style and approach. While the burden can often fall on the kids to get the conversation going, I want to encourage any older adults reading this column to help their children out by bringing these things up themselves. The more open you all are and the more mutual understanding there is about the future -- both emotional and financial -- the more you’ll all be able to enjoy the present.

retired professor of communications, Fordham University American TV was set to launch in the late 1930s, but its progress was interrupted by the start of WWII. “National Night Out events are all about building and strengthening the bonds between law enforcement and our communities by bringing police and residents together in a fun and welcoming atmosphere,” Legislator Drucker said.

“I am deeply grateful to our partners at Broadway Commons, the Nassau County Police Department, and all of our sponsors and community stakeholders for working with us to resume a cherished tradition that so many of our residents enjoy.”

The National Night Out at Broadway Commons Mall in Hicksville drew a good crowd.

The Heart and Health Medical Unit offered Moderna Covid-19 vaccines to eligible attendees.

The Town of Oyster Bay has announced an upcoming ‘Senior Citizen Day’ Event offered by the Department of Community and Youth Services (CYS) at Syosset-Woodbury Community Park. Line dancing, music, games and refreshments are just some of the activities seniors can enjoy at this new fun, free event that will take place on Thursday, August 19. Registration must be completed in advance for those who wish to attend.

“My administration has always put our seniors first and I am proud that we can host events for our senior residents to participate in these free activities, where they can enjoy the company of others, make new friends, and stay active and engaged,” Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino said.

The following programs will be offered as part of 2021 Senior Day on August 19: • Line Dancing with Fran10:00 a.m.

• St. Francis Outreach Van10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

In addition to the recreational activities, St. Francis will have an Outreach Van on hand at the event from z 10 a.m.–2 p.m., offering seniors in attendance the chance to utilize their services. School Board to meet The Syosset Board of Education will hold its regular monthly meeting on Monday, August 16 at 8 p.m. at South Woods Middle School, 99 Pell Lane, Syosset.

Town’s hockey program to return in fall The Town of Oyster Bay has announced that the Town’s Dek Hockey League will return for the fall season.

The league will kick off this September and is open to boys and girls aged 6–14.

Dek hockey is a variation of traditional ice hockey, where the games are played sans skates on the ‘dek’ of an ice rink after the ice has melted away for the season. The season will feature 10 games and practices over a 10-week period concluding with a playoff competition.

“Boys and girls aged 6–14 who are enrolled in the Town’s Youth Dek Hockey League will have a great opportunity to not only improve their hockey skills, but to also learn important life lessons like good sportsmanship from our talented and dedicated coaching staff,” Supervisor Saladino said. “Dek Hockey is a really fun variation of traditional ice hockey, and I am excited for the boys and girls of our Town who

will give this program a try!”

Registration will take place at the Allen Park Community Room (45 Motor Ave, Farmingdale) on Tuesday, August 17 from 4:30 p.m.–8 p.m., and at Syosset Woodbury Community Park (In the Skatehouse) on Wednesday, August 18th from 4:30 p.m.–8 p.m. The program will cost $95 for residents, and $110 for non-residents. Each child will need to provide their own equipment, a list of which will be supplied upon registration.

Families must provide proof of residency and a copy of their child’s birth certificate at registration. Only checks or money orders made payable to “Town of Oyster Bay” will be accepted. Registration open for Jonas Chiropractic Aspire 10K run The Jonas Chiropractic Sports Injury Care Aspire 10 Kilometer Run was one of the first events to fall victim to the pandemic in March of 2020, but at long last this important event is back!

Leaving its usual early Spring time slot, this year’s Run through the friendly streets of Plainview will be held on Saturday, August 21 and registration is now open.

The Run will once again be managed by the Greater Long Island Running Club.

The 2021 charitable beneficiary of the Aspire 10K is LONG ISLAND CARES/ The Harry Chapin Regional Food Bank (“Because it takes more than food to feed the hungry.”)

The new and improved course that was introduced in 2019 will be back again in 2021! The Run will continue to start and finish by the H.B.Mattlin Middle School on Washington Avenue in Plainview. But, as it was 2019, the course is entirely north of Old Country Road, and will give runners a chance to explore much of the northern reaches of Washington Avenue and the kind of hilly stretch of Harvard Drive in the middle of the Run. In addition to title sponsor Jonas Chiropractic Sports Injury Care, the Running Club is pleased to have the continued support of All Round Foods, the Runner’s Edge, and Mizuno.

The Run will continue to provide awards in age groups through 90 plus, as well for Clydesdales and Athenas in two divisions each. The top male and female Overall finishers and top male and female Masters finishers will each
