Oyster Festival to return after hiatus Bethpage man runs

around Long Island for a great cause BY GARY SIMEONE

Members of the Oyster Bay Town Board, together with sponsors and organizers of the Oyster Festival to announce its return this fall. After a two year hiatus, the East Coast’s largest waterfront festival will return this fall to the streets of Oyster Bay. Supervisor Joseph Saladino, his colleagues on the Town Board and organizers and sponsors of the 39th Oyster Festival announced the return of the iconic seaside festival this October 15 and 16. Supervisor Saladino, together with Councilwoman Michele Johnson, Councilman Lou Imbroto, Councilwoman Laura Maier, Councilwoman Vicki Walsh, Town Clerk Rich LaMarca and Receiver Jeff Pravato; joined with Catholic Health President & CEO Patrick M. O’Shaughnessy, DO, MBA; Richard Kessel, Nassau Coun-

ty IDA; Harlan Friedman, Oyster Fest co-producer; and Judy Wasilchuck, co-president of the Oyster Bay/East Norwich Rotary, in making the announcement. “From delicious food vendors, various merchandise exhibits, amusement rides and a waterfront family fun zone – the list goes on – the Oyster Festival has something for everyone. For nearly four decades, this annual tradition has provided so many great attractions, and we are confident that it will come back this year better than ever,” said Supervisor Saladino. “More importantly, this wonderful event does so much more than give patrons the chance to enjoy a delicious meal

and purchase some great merchandise. The Oyster Festival not only allows us to showcase our beautiful Town and all it has to offer, it is a major fundraising event which benefits several local non-profit organizations.” The Oyster Festival is the East Coast’s largest waterfront festival and attracts up to 200,000 people from all over the tristate area to Oyster Bay hamlet for this iconic event. Fifty-five year old William (Wai) Law’s run around Long Island started at Stony Brook University in late July. The Bethpage resident had a goal in mind to run a 320 mile course across Long Island to raise money for Parkinson’s disease research and adolescent mental health awareness programs. “My plan was to run for seven days and try to log fifty miles per day,” said Law. “I’ve been running to raise money for various organizations for the last sixteen years and recently added Parkinson’s disease research to my list.” Law said he started his journey on July 22 at Stony Brook, where he ran to Orient Point, a hamlet at the end of Long Island’s North Fork. From there he ran a total of a hundred miles for the next two days, running from Orient to Montauk Point to Westhampton, all the way to Cedar Creek Park in Seaford. “I gave myself a three-day break after that last run on the 24th to let my body heal a bit and get ready for the second half See page 9

Bethpage HS named School of Distinction

Bethpage High School recently earned the 2021-22 Scholar-Athlete School of Distinction award from the New York State Public High School Athletic Association, Inc. It is among 86 schools from across the state to receive this prestigious honor. To earn the School of Distinction Award, a school must have 100 percent of its varsity athletes qualify for and receive the scholar-athlete team award during their respective athletic seasons. Teams are presented with the scholar-athlete recognition if 75 percent of their roster has a GPA greater than or equal to 90. During the 2021-22 school year, Bethpage See page 9
