Lifeguards honored for saving one of their own

Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino (second from right) recognizes individuals involved in saving the life of one of their own, TOBAY Lieutenant Lifeguard Thomas Norland (third from right) when he collapsed and went into cardiac arrest at the end of last summer. Following a successful recovery, the TOBAY family welcomed Lt. Norland back to beach duty this season.

Wall Street grants higher rating to Town

Wall Street's Moody's Investor Services has granted the Town of Oyster Bay a "positive outlook" rating for the first time in almost twenty years. In assigning the new positive designation to the Town, Moody’s recognized that Oyster Bay is ‘on the road to healthier finances and there is now every indication that the Town’s efforts will culminate in a successful restoration of financial health.’ Moody’s further acknowledged

the Town’s finances as being ‘vastly improved’ and its confidence that Town ‘finances will continue to improve based on strong measures taken by management to reverse the past history of poor budgeting.’ The report further touted the administration’s ‘numerous steps to improve financial operations.’ Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino said, “Wall Street recognizes the positive steps being taken by my admin-

istration and the Town Board to restrict spending, pay down debt and balance the books without raising taxes.” The positive outlook designation comes after Town’s recently-issued financial audit results, which indicated that the Town successfully eliminated the multi-year operational deficit which hit a high of $44 million, while also ending 2018 with a net $17.7 million budgetary surplus.

Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino joined with parks officials and members of the TOBAY Lifeguarding Team in honoring extraordinary individuals who helped save the life of one of their own at the end of last summer. Near the end of the 2018 season, Lieutenant Lifeguard Thomas Nordland collapsed in the shower after a tough training swim, and subsequently went into cardiac arrest. After realizing their colleague had fallen and was in serious need of medical attention, Assistant Lifeguard Captain William Arnold, Senior Lieutenant Lifeguard Chuck Pulsinelli, EMT/Lieutenant Lifeguard Michael Greco and EMT Evan Schatzburgh, sprang into action, assessed the situation and began CPR and administered the AED. “We take great pride in recognizing the outstanding and lifesaving actions of our Town

personnel, especially during the summer months when our lifeguards, EMTs and other First Responders are often called into action,” Supervisor Saladino said. The Supervisor recognized all involved in saving Lieutenant Lifeguard Norland’s life, including Assistant Lifeguard Captain Billy Arnold, Lieutenant Lifeguard Chuck Pulsinelli, EMT/Lieutenant Lifeguard Michael Greco, EMT Evan Schatzburgh, Nassau County Police Officer Jackie Thompson, and Town of Oyster Bay Beach Manager Travis McCabe. “On behalf of the entire Town of Oyster Bay family, I am proud to commend these individuals for having the keen awareness and ability to act quickly, decisively and courageously when a fellow individual is in need,” Supervisor Saladino said.

Arrest for leaving scene A Levittown man was arrested on Friday, July 12, after allegedly leaving the scene of an accident with serious injuries. According to Nassau County Police, a male pedestrian, 35, while attempting to cross north on Hempstead Turnpike, was struck by a black Dodge Ram pick-up truck traveling eastbound. Police say the operator of the vehicle, John Roberts, 39, of Levittown, stopped briefly to assist

the victim and then fled the scene. After a long period of time, Roberts returned to the scene where he was placed under arrest. The victim suffered serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital where he is in critical but stable condition. The investigation is ongoing. The driver, John Roberts, is charged with Leaving the Scene of an Auto Accident with a Serious Physical Injury.
