Jonas E. Salk Middle School earns national recognition Jonas E. Salk Middle School in the Levittown Public Schools was recently selected as one of 167 middle schools nationwide to be designated a 2020 School to Watch by the National Forum to Accelerate Middle-Grades Reform. Each year, the Schools to Watch program recognizes middle schools across the nation that demonstrate continuous improvement and excel in various areas. This year, Jonas E. Salk Middle School is one of five Long Island schools to receive the designation which is held for three years. Assemblyman John Mikulin (R,C,I-Bethpage) met with World War II veteran Tom Geist and his wife Joy, along with several members of the veteran community on Saturday, June 6 in honor of the 76th anniversary of D-Day. Tom was a chaplain’s assistant during WWII. He served in the
European theater during the war and also sat in on the Nuremberg trials. At the age of 95, he is the former commander and a current member of the Hempstead American Legion Post 390. He and his wife are approaching their 70th wedding anniversary. “I was deeply humbled to
get the opportunity to speak with and honor such a dedicated WWII veteran such as Mr. Geist,” said Mikulin. “It is important to remember and honor our history and those who played such a huge part in it whenever possible. I thank Mr. Geist for his service and dedication to our nation.”

The Schools to Watch application provides an opportunity for Salk to be reflective in its practice both individually and as a school,” said Jonas E. Salk Middle School Principal John Zampaglione.
School budget vote counts to be delayed for mailed ballots Important note for voters: On June 7, by Executive Order, Governor Cuomo extended the deadline for receipt of voter’s mailed Budget Vote and Trustee Election Absentee Ballot to 5 p.m. on June 16. June 9, 5 p.m. is still the deadline for hand delivery of ballots to one of the District’s secured lockboxes located at District Office, 200 Division Avenue, Hicksville Middle School 2nd Street side, or
at the front entrance of any of the District’s seven elementary schools. Absolutely no ballots for the 2020-2021 Budget Vote and Trustee Election will be accepted by the District after 5 p.m. on June 9, except those received by mail.
