Free summer concerts in Town of OB parks

The Town of Oyster Bay will be holding a series of free summer concerts at local parks and beaches. All concerts are free of charge and begin at 8:00 p.m. unless otherwise noted below.

Concert goers will experience a wide variety of genres that range from country to rock, providing free entertainment for all music lovers. Residents are invited to bring lawn chairs, a cooler and the entire family.

Missing adult from Levittown

Richard Cariddi

Nassau County Police are investigating the report of a missing adult from Levittown.

According to police, Richard Cariddi, age 71, was last seen leaving his home on Miller Place in Levittown on Saturday, June 1 at 8:20 pm. Police say Cardi suffers from a cogitive disorder.

He is described as a male white, 5’5” tall, 155 pounds, with brown eyes, brown hair and was last seen wearing

black sweat pants and a teal T-shirt. He is traveling in a black 2017 Subaru with the Vermont license plate “COACHS”, and his destination is unknown.

Detectives request anyone with information regarding the above missing vulnerable adult to please contact the Nassau County Police Department Missing Persons Squad at 516-573-7347 or call 911.

Bicyclist hit on Newbridge Road Hicksville HS teacher honored as Woman of Distinction

Nassau County Police are investigating a serious accident involving a bicylist which took place on Tuesday, May 28 at 9:37 pm on Newbridge Road at Old Country Road in Hicksville.

According to detectives, a 63-yearold man was driving a 2019 Nissan northbound on Newbridge Road and struck a bicyclist. The male bicy-

clist, 16, was crossing Old County Road west to east. The bicyclist suffered multiple head injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. He was listed in critical condition. The male driver had no injuries.

The vehicle was brake and safety tested. The investigation is ongoing.

Mercy League seeks bowlers The Mercy League is looking for bowlers for its (non-money) Ladies League.

Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino with Hicksville High School teacher Alison Silvestri The Oyster Bay Town Board recently recognized Hicksville High School teacher Alison Silvestri as a 2019 Woman of Distinction.

Alison promotes women’s involvement in various fields both in her personal and professional life. Helping to nurture young women in the areas of science and engineering, Alison has coordinated trips to NYIT and Stony Brook University for her students at Hicksville High School.

In an effort to help promote environmental initiatives, Alison has coor-

dinated speakers to come from various environmental groups to discuss the importance of protecting the planet.

She also serves as the Ecology Club advisor at her school, and is a member of the Stony Brook University Mentor Program.

Alison’s daily actions and dedication demonstrate a great example to her young students. She is someone her students, colleagues, friends and family look to as a role model of what a civically-engaged community member should be.

The J-Birds placed 16th in their division out of 68 robots at the FIRST World Championship in Detroit held in April. It is with great sadness that the Officers and Members of Emergency Company 5 announce the passing of long time member and past Captain, William “Bill” Hummel. Bill passed away after a struggle with Alzheimer’s disease, on May 11, 2019. He was just short of 91st birthday.

Bill joined the Hicksville Fire Department as a member of Emergency Company 5 in January of 1967. He and his wife lived on James Street, just around the corner from the fire depart-

ment’s Station 3 sub-station. His talents and abilities were noted very quickly, as he was elected in 1970 as Lieutenant and subsequently as their 35th Captain in 1972 and again in 1973. Bill was an innovator and knew the future of what would be needed in the Hicksville community. He would play a pivotal role in the Fire Department’s Rescue Squad and lead them as their Captain. As Rescue Squad Captain, Bill spearheaded the first group of Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT’s) in New York State and in 1975, Bill Hummel and longtime friend Gordon Jenkins were among six graduates in the first class of Advanced Medical Technicians (AMT’s) hosted by Nassau County. Shortly thereafter, a medical condition would force Bill to set aside his firefighter career. However, Bill remained an honorary member up until the time of his passing, making his presence at Company Meetings and functions.

Before joining the volunteer fire department, Bill was part of the Greatest Generation and served in the United States Navy during WWII. Bill is predeceased by his wife Dorothy and he is survived by his son Charles, a daughter Colleen; 5 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. A memorial service was held on June 4, 2019 and he was interred at Calverton National Cemetery, New York.

Irish Family History Forum to meet The Irish Family History Forum will meet on Saturday, June 15 at 10 am at the Bethpage Library to hear a presentation by Cecily Dyer on the "Holdings of the Brooklyn Historical Society".

Founded in 1863, the Brooklyn Historical Society is dedicated to preserving and encouraging the study of Brooklyn’s extraordinary 400-year history. The Library and Archives Department has one of the most comprehensive collection of materials related to Brooklyn’s history and culture.

Reference librarian Cecily Dyer will discuss the holdings, which include books, archival collections, oral history interviews, photographs, maps, artifacts, paintings, and more.

The meeting's agenda will be:

The Town of Oyster Bay will offer a new Self-Defense Instructional Program that offers participants a blend of taekwondo, aikido and meditation taught by a certified instructor. The 10-week program, instructed by Grand Master Gene Perceval, is open to residents and nonresidents aged 18+ on either Mondays or Thursdays beginning in July.

Self-Defense Instruction Program Classes are offered on Mondays, beginning July 8th at 6pm and on Thursdays, beginning July 11 at 3 pm. The fee for one 10-week session is $60 for residents and $70 for nonresidents.

Saajid Chowdhury, a senior at General Douglas MacArthur High School from the Levittown Public Schools, was recently selected as a 2019 National Merit Scholarship winner in the prestigious National Merit Scholarship Program. Chowdhury is among 2,500 Merit Scholar designees from across the country who will be presented with a $2,500 National Merit Scholarship award.

The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships which approximately 1.6 million high school students enter each year by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

Scholarship winners are selected from a finalist group of about 15,000 outstanding students, after a review of their abilities, skills and accomplishments. Each finalist was evaluated on their academic record, including the difficulty of classes and their grades, leadership roles, contributions to the school, two sets of test scores, a written recommendation from the high school and the finalist’s own essay.

Bethpage schools honor teachers, students

Bethpage Union Free School District’s Director of Technology Andrew Choi was one of 10 honorees during the Tenure Reception on May 28.

Members of the Bethpage High School’s Captains’ Club were recognized during a Board of Education meeting on May 28.

Superintendent of Schools David Schneider spoke in front of those in attendance for the Tenure Reception on May 28 in the Bethpage High School courtyard.

The Bethpage Union Free School District celebrated the accolades of staff members and students during a Board of Education meeting on May 28, which was preceded by a tenure reception.

Ten staff members were honored in the high school courtyard for receiving tenure. Superintendent David Schneider congratulated them for their dedication in making Bethpage a special district and reaching this career milestone.

The best movie in my opinion just happens to be …

Why is it that one and not another movie? Is it “Gone With the Wind,” “The Godfather” or “The Matrix”?

Is it by any chance “The Wizard of Oz,” “Maleficent” or a newer one like “Hellboy”?

I saw the Leonardo DiCaprio version of “The Great Gatsby” when it came out in 2013 and I loved it. Leonardo stars as the lead character, Jay Gatsby, Carey Mulligan plays Daisy Buchanan and Tobey Maguire plays Nick Carraway.

The movie was so good that it won academy Awards in 2014 for Best Costume Design and for Best Production Design. They were well deserved - the movie was great!

The basic plot: Nick, a Midwestern transplant, ends up living next door in 1922 to Jay Gatsby who is a mysterious, party-giving millionaire, and across the bay from his cousin, Daisy, and her philandering, blue-blooded husband, Tom Buchanan. Nick can’t help himself from being drawn into the captivating world of the super rich, their illusions, their loves and their deceits.

Then again, I saw the Robert Redford version of the same movie when that one came out in 1974 and I loved that movie, too. It stars Robert Redford as Jay Gatsby. It also stars Mia Farrow, Sam Waterston, Bruce Dern and others.

I would probably like any version of “The Great Gatsby” since I am a big F. Scott Fitzgerald fan. Ever since reading the novel in my high school English class in Rockville Centre (it was mandatory reading!), I have been hooked on all things Gatsby. So in terms of movies, I have to say that has been my favorite.

As far as I am concerned, “The Great Gatsby” stands the test of time. It has a certain appeal for any New Yorker and Long Islander - its fictional story is set in West Egg and East Egg, generally assumed to be Great Neck and Port Washington. It’s also assumed that West Egg is where the self-made money people live and East Egg represents the established aristocracy.

As Nick the narrator explains, the American dream was originally about discovery, individualism and the pursuit of happiness. In the 1920s depicted in the novel, however, easy money and relaxed social values have corrupted

this dream.

Born into poverty, Jay Gatsby discarded his old identity in order to be accepted by the wealthy residents of New York City. His primary goals are to earn their respect and win the heart of Daisy Buchanan, his old flame. Daisy is Nick’s cousin and Nick is Gatsby’s neighbor.

Whenever Nick runs into Gatsby he calls Nick “old sport.” He wants to foster a friendship with Nick so that he can get back in the good graces of Daisy.

Also, Gatsby thinks that by calling Nick “old sport” it sounds like he belongs to old money.

He isn’t old money, however. Jay Gatsby is a character that he made up. Jay Gatsby’s birth name is James “Jimmy” Gatz. He was born into poverty in rural North Dakota and at 17 he changed his name to Jay Gatsby. Over the next five years he learned the ways of the wealthy.

Jay Gatsby wants to come across as cultured, a socialite and educated although he only spent five months studying at Oxford University because after World War I American officers could study at British or French col-

leges. He wants to impress people - he wants people to think that he is “an Oxford man” but certain people pick up on the fact that he didn’t graduate from Oxford.At one point in the book and movie Jay Gatsby gives Nick and Daisy a tour of his house and he shows them his closet full of elegant, expensive clothes. Gatsby mentions that he has “a man in England” who sends him new clothes at the beginning of each season. Gatsby then begins to throw his colorful, imported shirts onto a pile as Nick and Daisy watch in amazement.

What Jay Gatsby wanted out of life was unattainable but for years he kept dreaming. As one writer notes (on enotes.com), Gatsby creates an image of himself and a dream both based on illusions. He believes that he can repeat the past and attain whatever he desires.

His American Dream is also a myth, however, an ideal of materialism as the formula for success. It’s all an illusion.

Gatsby’s search for success and for his idealistic love ends in tragedy. I won’t reveal the climax of the book but let me just say that it’s a real page turner.

The Social Security Benefit You’ve Never Heard Of

Q: I will admit I am a bit of a wonky nerd. I like researching arcane bits of historical minutiae. Recently, I got interested in Social Security BIC codes. I was able to figure out most of the benefits associated with each code. But one puzzled me: the “J” BIC, which my limited research said are “special age 72 benefits.” I know about the enhanced benefit you can get if you wait until age 70 to claim your benefit. But is there some hidden extra benefit you can get at age 72?

A: Gosh, talk about a blast from the past. I haven’t heard any mention of Special Age 72 benefits, usually referred to as Prouty benefits, for about 30 years.

It makes for an interesting story, which I will share in a minute. But first, I will give a quick answer to your question. No, there are no longer any hidden benefits you can get at age 72.

Also, before I get into the story about Prouty benefits, I should explain your reference to “BIC” codes. BIC stands for Beneficiary Identification Codes. They are simply letter codes that designate the various kinds of Social Security benefits.

There is no alliteration attached to these code assignments. In other words, you might think that “R” would designate retirement benefits or “S” might refer to spousal benefits. But that’s not the way they were set up. It’s just a straight alphabetical progression of all Social Security benefits.

For example, “A” stands for retirement benefits. “B” was assigned to designate benefits to a wife. (Later, when benefits to husbands were added to the law, they became “B1” benefits.) “C” is for children’s benefits. “D” is for widows.

And it keeps on going, all the way to “W,” which refers to benefits for disabled widows. If you are curious about these codes, just Google “Social Security BIC codes” and you will find the complete list.

Anyway, there in the middle of the pack of codes you will find “J” benefits.

You will also find “K” benefits. “J” is used to designate a Prouty beneficiary, and “K” is the wife of a Prouty beneficiary.

In a nutshell, Prouty benefits were set up in the 1960s to pay a small monthly stipend to people who were too old to have had a chance to work and pay enough taxes into the Social Security system to become insured for regular Social Security benefits. The sponsor of the legislation was Senator Winston Prouty of Vermont.

I have no idea if this story was true or not. But back in my early days of working for the Social Security Administration, when Prouty benefits were still being routinely awarded, the word being spread from one SSA rep to another was that Prouty had parents who didn’t qualify for regular Social Security, so he crafted this legislation to help out mom and dad (and eventually, hundreds of thousands of others).

I don’t recall all of the rules. But I believe a Prouty beneficiary with no Social

Security work history had to be age 72 before 1968 in order to qualify for a monthly check that I think was less than $100.

There also were other rules for people who had some Social Security covered work, but not enough to qualify for regular Social Security benefits. Or they might have had enough work to get a very small Social Security check. But if the Prouty rules would pay them more money, they would get a Prouty benefit instead of their regular Social Security check. But no matter what their situation, the rules were always tied to the attainment of age 72. Thus the term “special age 72 benefits.”

Because almost all the people who were eligible for these benefits were born before 1896, it is highly unlikely there are any Prouty beneficiaries still alive today.

So I’m sure that all “J” and “K” BIC codes are now just historical footnotes.

Q: My mother’s Social Security award letter has my stepdad’s Social Security number on it followed by “B3.” Can you explain what that is all about? Is her own Social Security number still valid?

A: Last question answered first. Yes, her own Social Security number is still valid. She would use it any time she is asked for her number, like on a tax return or if she ever applies for a job.

But she is claiming Social Security benefits off of your stepdad’s record, so her Social Security “claim number” is his Social Security number followed by the BIC “B3.” And checking that list of codes online, I see that “B3” designates an “aged wife, second claimant.” So what that means is that your mom must be the second wife who is claiming benefits on your stepdad’s record. So maybe he had another wife who was getting benefits on his record and then she died? (I’m guessing she’s dead and not divorced because there is a separate BIC for the latter status.)

By the way, some readers may be wondering what happened to B2. I mentioned earlier that B is the code for a woman getting wife’s benefits, and B1 is the symbol for someone getting benefits as a dependent husband on his wife’s Social Security record. And now we just learned that B3 is the code for a woman who is the second person to file for spousal benefits.

A B2 is listed as “a young wife with child in care.” So who exactly would that be? Well, if a retiree was married to a younger woman and if they had a child (hey, it happens), then the child would get benefits until he or she was 18 years old. That child’s BIC code would be C. And if the mother was not working, she would also be due benefits on the retiree’s record, and her BIC would be B2. I know from experience that many readers are surprised (and usually upset) to learn that those kinds of benefits are paid. But there simply aren’t that many B2s out there. When an older guy is married to a younger woman, more often than not, she is working, and her earnings would prevent her from collecting B2 benefits.

By the way, what is even more uncommon than a B2 benefit? Well, that would be a BY benefit. The BIC list says that a BY beneficiary is a “young husband with child in care.” In other words, that would be a situation in which an older woman getting Social Security benefits is married to a younger man, and they had a child. For obvious biological reasons, it would be very unlikely that an older retired woman would have minor children of her own. More likely, the husband had a child from a previous

marriage, and that minor child would legally be due benefits on the woman’s account as a stepchild. And if the young husband/ father wasn’t working, he could get a check, too. It’s all possible, but highly unlikely. In my almost 50 years of working on Social Security matters, I have never met or even heard of a BY beneficiary.

How it really was: We can presume that the author, F. Scott Fitzgerald, was enamored with “all things New York.”

That’s interesting because Fitzgerald was born almost 1,200 miles away in St. Paul, MN. He was born Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald in 1896 to a family whose father was a descendant of Francis Scott Key who wrote “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

The Fitzgerald family moved often and Scott spent his childhood in St. Paul, Buffalo, and Hackensack, NJ. In St. Paul, he attended the St. Paul Academy and saw his first published story appear in the school newspaper.

Of the Fitzgeralds’ three children, Scott was their only son. He attended Princeton University and in 1917 left to join the Army. In July 1918, while he was stationed near Montgomery, AL, he met Zelda Sayre, the daughter of an Alabama Supreme Court judge. They both went to a dance at a local country club and hit it off.

They fell deeply in love, and, as soon as he could, Fitzgerald headed for New York determined to become a success and to marry Zelda.

Scott was working at an advertising job in Manhattan at $90 a month. Zelda broke off their engagement and waited for him to get a better job or at least have a more substantial income.

In the spring of 1920 Fitzgerald’s first book, “This Side of Paradise,” was pub-

lished. His book was a revelation of the new morality of the young and it made Fitzgerald famous, according to Britannica.com.

He married Zelda that same year and for the first four months of their marriage they lived just 50 miles away from New York City in Westport, Ct. Scott was 23 and Zelda was 19. It was a long honeymoon for the Fitzgeralds but perfect for both - he wanted to write, she wanted to swim and they both wanted to party.

For many people the Fitzgeralds represented the talent, the sophistication, the glamour and the excess of American life of the 1920s. It was “The Jazz Age” after all. During the Jazz Age American culture was changing and many Americans became more financially affluent. The era was post-World War I but years before the crash of the stock market.

Jazz music was popular and dancing skyrocketed during the 1920s. Before the stock market had crashed in 1929 and the Great Depression started, culture was booming in America. Zelda and Scott Fitzgerald made the most of it, socializing whenever they could.

They wore fancy clothes and costumes sometimes and did some name dropping along with many other people.

In 1921 their daughter, Frances “Scottie” Fitzgerald, was born in St. Paul where they had returned for a short time. The Fitzgerald family moved to the French Riviera in 1924 and joined a group of American expatriates - of

other writers, artists and celebrities - to write.

Shortly after their arrival in France, Fitzgerald completed writing “The Great Gatsby” which many people regard as his most brilliant novel. It was published by Charles Scribner’s Sons in New York on April 10, 1925, when Scott Fitzgerald was 29 years old.

All of his divided nature is in this novel. Scott Fitzgerald is the naive Midwesterner who arrives in New York and has always been preoccupied with achieving the “American Dream.” Jay Gatsby personified this - or does he?

- and as the compassionate Yale gentleman, Nick Carraway, acts as the objective narrator.

“The Great Gatsby” is considered by most to be the most profoundly American novel of its time. The book explores the themes of love and loyalty.

There are seven additional themes that appear in “The Great Gatsby.”

They are money, class in society, the American dream, relationships, failure and death, morality and selfidentification as outlined in blog. prepscholar.com.

In real life, Scott Fitzgerald’s financial struggles to succeed as a writer, the ups and downs of their marriage and her struggles with mental health all provided him with plenty of material to write about and to draw from.

The happiness that F. Scott Fitzgerald sought all his life was fleeting. Zelda had to be confined to a sanitarium. It is said that he struggled with alcohol-

ism for many years. Fitzgerald’s books weren’t financially profitable until several years after his death so to pay his bills, in 1937 he left the East coast to pursue work as a film screenwriter in Hollywood.

He only worked at that job for about three years. In 1940, F. Scott Fitzgerald died at the age of 44 in Los Angeles, Calif., of a heart attack. He is buried in Rockville, MD. The Big Screen did a good job of portraying Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby” both in 2013 and 1974. Who doesn’t like watching both Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert Redford in the movie theatre, after all? In their white suits with their finely tailored shirts they come across as very, very handsome.

“The Great Gatsby” has got it all - it’s got love, suspense and intrigue. It’s also got plenty of action. The movie keeps you on the edge of your seat because you never really know what’s going to happen next.

I’m not a cinephile, someone who is very fond of movies, I am definitely more of a bibliophile, someone who likes books, but I do like going out once in a while and watching a great movie on a very Big Screen. My feeling is that the story comes across very dramatically on a very Big Screen.

So here’s to my favorite movie or your favorite movie and whatever great new movie happens to be coming down the pike. I’ll be waiting for it.

Don’t get bugged when showing your home, be prepared!

hope everyone enjoyed the Memorial Day Weekend with family and friends and remembered those who, over the last 244 years of our existence, sacrificed for our democracy and freedom and hopefully there will be less wars and more diplomacy and communication to solve disagreements and issues.

When you or your agents are showing your home, do you worry about insects in and outside your home this summer? With all the rain we have had during the winter and spring, thus far and may continue to have going forward, mosquitoes and other annoying and flying insects could be a real pain in the butt and hazard and turn off to your purchasers, assuming you have a very pleasant rear yard to relax in.

Standing water is a huge breeding ground for those pesky litter critters as well as their potential dangerous bites and itchy aftermath. The last thing you need is to have your buyers bitten and become annoyed when viewing your backyard. Any time it rains, make sure all those pans, buckets or whatever you may have that collects rain water are dumped out and turned over, so water accumulation is eliminated. Also, the closer you are to lakes, oceans or swampy low lying areas, the greater the opportunity for mosquito infestation.

Nassau and Suffolk County and NYS owned properties have many areas, especially recharge basins where water sits and accumulates as a potential breeding ground for mosquitoes. You can reach out to the public works and health department in your county to ascertain, if they will be spraying larvicide to kill the mosquito eggs before they hatch in those areas again this summer. West Nile Virus is directly related to infected Asian Tiger mosquitoes that carry the disease; and last year Nassau and Suffolk County had reported cases, some fatal. So one should cover arms and legs, especially in areas with mosquitoes are and be cognizant of any bites that cause mild symptoms of fever, headache and body aches, a skin rash and swollen lymph glands.

Symptoms in more severe cases can include high fever, neck stiffness, stupor, disorientation, coma, tremors, convulsions, muscle weakness, vision loss, numbness and paralysis.

Individuals most at risk for severe infection include those over the age of 55 and those with chronic illness or compromised immune systems.

Deer ticks, causing Lyme Disease is another serious issue in Long Island, especially where tall grasses and vegetation exists. One should always wear clothing to cover arms and legs when walking or hiking, especially in Suffolk County. Flea bites are another insect, although much less dangerous, but annoying, as your pets should be protected against.

I have seen many homes over the years, where the homeowner goes out and purchases bug zappers. It may appear that you are reducing the population of all sorts of flying insects, including mosquitoes, but I beg to differ and the reason is that the light that attracts them, does just that, and you are just attracting a greater population of insects to your property.

Citronella drives away bothersome insects such as flies and mosquitoes.

You can combat the bugs further by also combining the torches with citrus candles for twice the pest-fighting action. Spray water with lavender or eucalyptus around your patio to create a natural pest barrier. Spraying it on you can also help keep bugs away.

Vinegar is a natural deterrent for ants.

A combination of half apple cider vinegar (although normal vinegar works just as well) and half water in a spray bottle works perfectly to repel those pests. This concoction can be sprayed around the perimeter of your home, on the legs of tables that have food served on them or even around a screen house or tent. While vinegar is an effective item you can use to get rid of ants, you will need to reapply, as the residual effect is minimal.

Another useful ant deterrent is cayenne pepper. When sprinkled in places

where ants tend to gather, like areas near sugar and places where crumbs linger, they stay away. The pepper’s spice serves as a deterrent for the ants by telling them that none of the sweet stuff that they’re looking for is there. It acts almost like caution tape.

It can get a little messy, so try to sprinkle the cayenne pepper in areas that aren’t used as much, like a cabinet; especially ones that contain baking supplies or other sweet goods.

Another natural deterrent is peppermint oil. Not only does it repel ants, it also repels spiders. In fact, peppermint keeps most pests away, including aphids, beetles, caterpillars, fleas, flies, lice, mice and moths. There are three ways to effectively apply this oil: soaking cotton balls in the oil and hiding them where the insects gather, applying the oil directly to the affected areas, or diluting it with water and spraying the perimeter of areas you’re trying to protect. If you’re diluting the oil, mix 10 drops of peppermint essential oil and 16 oz. of water, then pour into a spray bottle. Peppermint oil can also keep some of the spiders out of the areas of the home where they frequent most, in addition to making the house smell wonderful. While this appears to be a simple solution, it’s a game of strategy’ by putting the oil in locations where you suspect pests are entering.

With a little trial and error, you should be able to target and focus on those specific areas. It’s all about where you put it, using doorways and entrances to your advantage.

Getting rid of crickets in your basement can be done in two ways. Fill a bowl with a few tablespoons of molasses and then fill half way up with water and place in those areas in your basement where you notice the populations of crickets. As they get attracted to the molasses and go in and get stuck and then drown, replace as needed. Also, sticky traps work extremely well too and are another natural way to minimize them. There are also cricket bait you can purchase that will work too.

help prevent them and heal any existing bites. The mixture has a nice fragrant smell compared to most cans of spray you can buy in the store, and it’s as affordable as a bottle of DEET; which you should use as a last resort, if you cannot control your issues. But be careful and use precaution and ask your doctor for advice before using.

Lavender oil is one of the only essential oils you don’t have to dilute with water to use on the body, although it’s recommended that you speak with your doctor first. All in all, these bug deterrents all do their jobs well, and finding some natural options for your household and family is always a plus.

Lastly, here are some choices in plants that you can grow or purchase to strategically place around your home where you know previous issues with mosquitoes existed or might be: 1.) Citronella grass 2.) Basil 3.) Catnip 4.) Catmint 5.) Rosemary and thyme, which lasted longer than DEET as per Seoul National University, in Seoul, Korea.

You can call your local exterminator, if you don’t want to bother doing it yourself, but the natural way is always safer and you’ll save money and have potentially less issues with your children and pets.

Minimizing eliminating unwanted insects inside and outside your home will add to the desirability of your home and property, while keeping buyers in the game when viewing your home for sale or rent and will add to maximizing its appeal.

The Cheapskate Gardener

BY MARY HUNT The only difference between gardeners and cheapskate gardeners is the amount of money they spend to achieve the same results. The truth is, like no other hobby, gardening is actually more productive when the cheapest -- even free! -- supplies are used.

CONTROL WEEDS

Newspaper. It’s cheap, and it works beautifully. Cover the area with 10 layers of newspaper, and then spread mulch or compost over the top. Plant whatever you like by poking a hole in the paper for the seed or plant.

Homemade weedkiller. Dissolve 2 cups salt in 1 gallon white vinegar, and add 1 tablespoon liquid dish soap. Move some of the vinegar to another container so you have room to get all that salt in there.

Then replace the amount you removed and add the soap. Apply with a spray bottle. Caution: Repeated use will sterilize the soil to where eventually nothing will grow. It’s ideal for driveways, paths and walkways.

KEEP CATS AWAY

Ammonia. Sink small open containers (baby food jars are good) into the soil up to the rim throughout the garden, and fill with household ammonia. Cats hate the smell of ammonia.

Pepper. Sprinkle the garden with ground black pepper. Purchase it in bulk at a warehouse club

or bulk grocer, and apply liberally to the affected area. It won’t harm the cats but rather simply irritate their paws, so they’ll go somewhere else to dig.

Plant flowers. Marigolds have a pungent odor that repels cats and other bugs and animals.

Plant them among your vegetable and flower gardens.

FEED YOUR LAWN AND PLANTS

HOMEMADE LAWN FOOD

1 cup Epsom salts

1 cup antiseptic mouthwash

1 cup liquid dish soap

1 cup ammonia

1 can beer

Mix the following in a large container.

Fill a hose-end sprayer jar that mixes its contents with water. Attach to the hose, and give your lawn a generous dose. Yum. (Set the dial so this recipe mixes with 20 gallons of water. You can figure that out. I know you can.)

PROMOTE NEW GROWTH

To guarantee the healthiest plants in town, when planting trees, shrubs and evergreens, scatter 10 unused match heads and 1 cup of Epsom salts in the planting hole. This promotes new growth and helps strengthen stems and roots.

BUILD SOIL

Fireplace ashes. Spread wood ash from your winter fires onto the garden beds. Also known as potash, it will gradually build the soil, adding potassium as well as 32 trace minerals. And it’s free!

Increase acidity. Drench wet soil with fullstrength white vinegar (or drench dry soil with a 50-50 vinegar and water solution) to increase the acidity of the soil for plants like azaleas and gardenias.

Summer yoga classes at TOB facilities Oyster Bay Town Councilman Anthony Macagnone announces that residents seeking a low-impact and enjoyable fitness activity are encouraged take part in the Town of Oyster Bay’s Yoga Classes, which will be held this summer. Classes are co-ed, open to individuals 18 years of age or older.

“The Town is proud to offer residents a variety of programs and services including these yoga classes which offer benefits to the mind, body and soul,” said Councilman Macagnone.

“Yoga builds strength, increases general flexibility and is considered a great stress reliever. Sign up today and use this opportunity to also meet new friends that can last a lifetime!”

Beginning July 13, Yoga Classes will run for 10-weeks on: • Mondays, from 10am to 11am, at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center, located at 1001 Stewart Avenue in Bethpage.

• Tuesdays, from 8 pm to 9 pm, at the Hicksville Athletic Center, located at 167 S.

Broadway in Hicksville.

• Saturdays, from 9am to 10am, at the Hicksville Athletic Center, located at 167 S. Broadway in Hicksville.

Registration takes place at the Hicksville Athletic Center on Sunday, June 2 from 8 am to 3 pm; Monday, June 3 from 6 pm to 9 pm; and on Thursday, June 6 from 6 pm to 9 pm.

The fee for residents is $60 and $70 for non-residents.

Please note that the schedule may be subject to change and residents are encouraged to inquire about special holiday scheduling. If a session is cancelled due to inclement weather, a make-up session will be attempted. Mats will not be provided, so participants must bring their own yoga mat.
